Charlottesville White Supremacist ‘Crying Nazi’ Denied Bond After Arrest

On Thursday evening, a Virginia judge denied bond for “Crying Nazi” Christopher Charles Cantwell.

Albemarle General District Court Judge set the bond at $25,000 on August 31, which, WVIR News reports, prompted an appeal from the prosecution. They argued that Cantwell is a flight risk since he has no ties to the local community or even to the state of Virginia. The judge agreed, adding that his racist hate speech made him a threat to others.

Two people swore before a magistrate that Cantwell had assaulted them with pepper spray, leading to an arrest warrant being issued. He turned himself in and now faces charges of two counts of illegal use of tear gas and other gases, and one count of malicious bodily injury stemming from his participation in the tiki torch march on the University of Virginia campus on August 11.

In an interview with Vice Media, Cantwell criticized President Donald Trump for allowing his daughter Ivanka to marry Jared Kushner, a Jew. He is seen chanting, “Jews will not replace us,” as he marches through Charlottesville, Virginia.

The event turned deadly when an alleged Neo-Nazi plowed his car into a crowd of counter-protesters, injuring several and killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer.

Cantwell gave an interview with The Daily Beast in which he tried to “humanize” himself and his radical racist views. He told them, “When I come down here for a permitted demonstration, championed by the ACLU, where the police are supposed to be clearing our enemies from our path, and then I find myself involved in a riot facing 20 years in prison, I got emotional, shockingly enough.”

Cantwell is awaiting trial at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail.
