A new study conducted by the highly-respected Pew Research Foundation found that black children were five times more likely than white children to die from gunfire in 2021.

Among black children and teens, 11.8 gun deaths per 100,000 occurred in 2021, compared with 2.3 gun deaths per 100,000 in white children and teens. Among Hispanic children and teens, the death rate was also 2.3 deaths per 100,000; among Asian children and teens, the rate was 0.9 per 100,000. Pew’s data was culled from annual mortality statistics provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“In 2021, 46% of all gun deaths among children and teens involved Black victims, even though only 14% of the U.S. under-18 population that year was Black,” Pew pointed out. “Homicide was the largest single category of gun deaths among children and teens in 2021, accounting for 60% of the total that year. It was followed by suicide at 32% and accidents at 5%.”

Of the gun deaths among black children and teens, 84% were homicides, while 9% were suicides. The situation was reversed among white children and teens; 66% were suicides, and only 24% were homicides.

42% of Hispanic parents and 32% of black parents were extremely or very worried about their children getting shot; 23% of Asian parents agreed, while 12% of white parents echoed that sentiment.

35% of parents in self-described urban communities were extremely or very worried about their children being shot; only 17% of suburban parents and 19% of rural parents agreed.

“In 2022, one in every 67 Black men ages 18 to 24 in Philadelphia were killed or injured in gun homicides or shootings,” the Giffords Law Center admitted. “In Rochester, New York, it was one in 50 young Black men. In Cincinnati, it was one in 44 young Black men.”

A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that among firearm-related deaths between 1990 and 2021, firearm-related homicides were greatest among black men between the ages of 20 and 40.

“There are these hotspots where firearm fatalities are happening more frequently, and interventions need to be catered to where those are happening,” one of the authors of the study noted. “We’re seeing huge rates of firearm-related homicides among young black and African American males — that’s the population where we may need to think about implementing violence prevention strategies.”
