Bill Maher, host of HBO’s “Real Time,” said during his show this week that Democrats need to consider dumping President Joe Biden at the Democratic National Convention this summer if they want to beat former President Donald Trump and maintain control of the White House.
Maher’s remarks come after Biden held a press conference Thursday nigh in response to Special Counsel Robert Hur’s findings from his criminal investigation into Biden’s handling of classified material, which concluded that while Biden “willfully retained and disclosed classified materials,” no charges should be brought.
One of the top reasons that Hur argued that charges should not be brought was that Biden showed strong signs of having serious memory issues — including not remembering when his son died or when he served as vice president in the Obama administration. Hur concluded that a jury would view Biden as “a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”
During the event, Biden exploded at reporters who pointed out voters’ concerns about his age and declared that he was the most qualified person in America to be president. During the event, Biden mixed up the presidents of Egypt and Mexico, forgot the name of the church where his deceased son got the rosary that he wears every day, and forgot key details from the special counsel’s report.
Maher responded to the developments by saying, “I said he was going to be the Ruth Bader Ginsburg of presidential politics… He stayed too long at the fair.”
“Bubbling up this week… he won’t do the Super Bowl interview, which is not a hard one, mixing up all the world leaders and then this report that came out,” he continued, later adding: “Republicans are brilliant at using this. This is a little bit like the Comey letter, a little like the Starr report.”
Maher noted that Biden has previously referred to himself as a “bridge” for Democrats to get to the next generation of leaders for their party.
“He said ‘I see myself as a bridge’ that’s collapsing,” Maher said. “‘I see myself as a bridge.’ I read that as one term. And I guess the question now is, is it too late? And I don’t think it is because I still think you can do it at the convention. People have said to me, ‘Oh, that’s ridiculous. They’ll look like-‘ They’ll look like nothing. Nobody gives a f— what they do at the convention.”

“You can switch him out at the convention… If a guy says ‘I can’t run,’ then you have to do it,” Maher continued. “Then it has to be somebody else. Then it’s an open convention. We’ve had open conventions many times… They make it up as they go along anyway. It’s politics.”
