Trolls of the Sabo variety (though this has not been confirmed as the famed street artist’s work) defaced a billboard for “Real Time with Bill Maher” by replacing the political satrist’s face with that of an NPC Internet meme on Tuesday. In response, Bill Maher took to Twitter to denounce the vandals as jealous “Incels.”
“To those Incels who defaced my billboard, I just want you to know, I will follow you to the gates of your parents’ basement! And thanks for the free publicity, Real Time is back Friday night!” Bill Maher said.
After the NPC meme had been cleared off, Bill Maher followed up to say, “Oh, look, it got fixed already.”
According to KnowYourMeme, the NPC Wojak descends from the “MS Paint character Wojak with a blank stare and facial expression” and is “named after non-player characters within video games.” The character symbolizes robotic automatons who have no original thoughts and do what they have been told.
“Incels” refers to the recent phenomenon of “Involuntary Celibates,” an online subculture of distraught men who commiserate over the difficulty in finding romantic love interests with the opposite sex. The term took on a whole new connotation when a deranged 25-year-old Canadian man claiming to be a member of that subculture killed 10 people when he rammed a truck through a crowd of pedestrians. Ben Shapiro said at the time the Incel phenomenon stemmed in part from Western culture’s lack of support for commitment and virginity:
Placing sex into the context of commitment means restoring it to its proper role, rather than as the goal of life itself. … In this world, virginity isn’t seen as something to be condemned at all. It’s seen as the norm, not as a shortcoming. It’s seen as a sign of respect for your partner — you respect that person enough not to treat them as vessels for sexual pleasure, but as a person whose trust and love you must earn before mutually pleasurable physical activity takes place.
If sex is the goal of life, however, then we fall directly into [a trap]: we treat unequal distribution of sex as a societal problem rather than an individual one. You have been victimized, because everyone but you is having sex, and having sex is the norm — but you’re not normal, and thus you have been cast out. Poor you.
If we treat commitment as the goal of life, then responsibility lies with you, not with society at large.
While Bill Maher certainly pushes a leftist agenda, defacing his billboard with an NPC meme is not exactly an accurate troll of his ethos, being that he has sided with conservatives on issues like free speech and Islam much to the chagrin of his leftist peers. Surprisingly, he even defended InfoWars founder Alex Jones when social media companies collectively banned him from their platforms:
“That’s free speech for the speech you hate,” Maher said on his show. “That’s what free speech means. We’re losing the thread of the concepts that are important to this country.”
“If you care about the real American sh*t or you don’t,” Maher continued. “And if you do, it goes for every side. I don’t like Alex Jones, but Alex Jones gets to speak. Everybody gets to speak.”
When Parkland Shooting survivor David Hogg launched a boycott against Laura Ingraham, Bill Maher also defended her right to speak without getting hassled.
“Again, [Hogg] is in the arena, and then he calls for a boycott of her sponsors. Really? Is that American?” said Maher. “He complains about bullying? That’s bullying!”
“It can’t be the case that you’re your own human shield,” Maher said later. “I understand they’re in high school. So if they say something, people do have the right to answer back.”
