Comedian Bill Maher woke up on the right side of the bed this morning because once again he’s siding with conservatives on a few issues. Speaking on his show “Real Time” on Friday, the HBO host warned that Donald Trump will clean Democrats’ clock in 2020 if they turn illegal immigration into a “woke contest.”
Maher said that immigration should not be a major issue “in reality,” while acknowledging that Democrats have little to gain by pushing open borders.
“If it becomes a ‘woke’ contest, then the Democrats lose on this,” Maher said, in comments reported by Fox News. “Yes, they look better, but it’s impossible not to look better next to him!”
Maher did not play into the rhetoric often peddled by his fellow progressives regarding the crisis at the southern border and even argued against it. When panelist Wendy Sherman, who served in the State Department during the Obama administration, said that President Trump invented the “immigration crisis” by cutting aid to Central American countries and separating families, Maher laughed off the comments.
“This is what Democrats say, which only gets other Democrats,” Maher told Sherman. “This is not the speech that is going to win any [swing] voters. You’ve [already] got the compassion vote!”
Not everything Maher said on Friday night dismissed leftist rhetoric toward President Trump. In his opening monologue, Maher once again mentioned Trump’s enigmatic tax returns.
“Monday is Tax Day. Or as Trump calls it ‘Monday.’ As we are all paying ours, he will not release his,” Maher said, Deadline notes. “You know the IRS was supposed to get his tax returns this Wednesday. Didn’t happen, didn’t happen. There are committees in Congress that are allowed by law to request any tax return. The IRS, they have to provide them. This is what we used to call a law. We don’t have those any more. Trump finally has the lackey Attorney General he always wanted, William Barr.”
Maher especially took issue with the Trump administration sending illegal immigrants to sanctuary cities as a means of political retribution.
“This is where we are right now as a country. If the Democrats don’t see it your way? Dump refugees in their cities because we’re the United States,” said Maher. “I know we’re not supposed to use words like ‘deplorable.’ Hard. It’s pretty f***ing deplorable. We’re not supposed to say ‘racist,’ not supposed to say ‘stupid,’ ‘backward.’ Hard for me. Last week, this is not a joke, Kentucky outlawed bestiality, Last week. And that’s not even what blew my mind the most. It was the words that begin the third paragraph of the article I was reading, ‘Opponents of the bill…'”
Last month, Maher also denounced social justice warriors as a “cancer on progressivism,” arguing they care neither about truth nor justice. “I don’t think they’re interested in justice; I don’t think they’re interested in truth; I think they’re interested in clicks,” he said. “I think they’re interested in things that make people click, and when I read them it makes me glad I didn’t have kids who would see this. Hey, I got a smattering of applause there.”
