Many political commentators said Biden looked "happy" with the election results.

President Joe Biden looked relieved while addressing the nation on Thursday following President-elect Donald Trump’s dominant victory over Vice President Kamala Harris this week.

Biden’s remarks from the White House were his first public comments since Tuesday’s election.

“For over 200 years, America has carried on the greatest experiment in self-government in the history of the world,” Biden said. “That’s not hyperbole, that’s a fact.”

Biden said he had already spoken to Trump and congratulated him on his victory.

“I assured him that I direct my entire administration to work with his team to ensure a peaceful and orderly transition,” Biden said, later adding: “On January 20, we’ll have a peaceful transfer of power here in America.”

Biden called for Americans to stop seeing each other as adversaries but as fellow Americans — remarks that come just days after he called tens of millions of Trump supporters “garbage.”

The 46th president said that the election results proved that America’s election systems were honest, fair, and transparent.

He said that “much of the work we’ve done is already being felt by the American people,” a fact that led to Trump’s victory.

He claimed that “the vast majority of it” will not be felt for years to come.

“You know, we’re leaving behind the strongest economy in the world,” Biden claimed. “I know people are still hurting, but things are changing rapidly.”

He said he would close out his term by doing the most he could with the time he had left.

“Setbacks are unavoidable, but giving up is unforgivable,” he concluded. “We all get knocked down, but the measure of our character, as my dad would say, is how quickly we get back up. Remember, a defeat does not mean we are defeated. We lost this battle.”
