Bernie Sanders Introduces Bill Targeting Jeff Bezos

We are now at the point in society where members of Congress will not only introduce bills to target specific individuals, but broadcast specifically what they are doing in the name of the bill.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) has introduced a bill called the “Stop BEZOS Act” in reference to Amazon CEO and owner of the Washington Post Jeff Bezos.

The bill is actually a tortured acronym that stands for “Stop Bad Employers by Zeroing Out Subsidies Act” and is aimed at large corporations like Amazon and Walmart who pay their workers minimum wage, which results in many employees requiring government assistance such as food stamps and public housing.

Sanders said his bill would place a 100% tax on the government benefits these workers receive if they work for a company with more than 500 employees.

“In other words, the taxpayers of this country would no longer be subsidizing the wealthiest people in this country who are paying their workers inadequate wages,” Sanders said during a press conference about the bill. “Despite low unemployment, we end up having tens of millions of Americans working at wages that are just so low that they can’t adequately take care of their families.”

The Washington Post reports that the bill was introduced “one day after Amazon reached $1 trillion in market cap, a milestone that cements its position as one of the world’s wealthiest companies.” The only publicly-traded company in the U.S. valued higher is Apple, according to the Post.

Amazon says Sanders’ claim that its employees endure poor working conditions is “inaccurate and misleading,” and says the company has reached out to Sanders to try and get him to tour one of its fulfillment centers. Sanders, the company says, has not seen one of the centers he claims is so awful.
