Ben Shapiro Breaks Down Why Big Media Blames You For Nashville School Attack

If you don’t believe gender dysphoric people can change their biological sex, big media thinks you share blame for Monday’s Nashville school shooting, Ben Shapiro said Wednesday.

The shooting at a Christian elementary school, which left three children and three adults dead, was carried out by a 28-year-old woman who believed she was a man. Police responded to the scene and shot her dead before she could kill more people. But in the aftermath of the horrific tragedy, much of the Leftist media has focused on the killer’s preferred pronouns and whether conservatives may have provoked the monstrous act.

“As it turns out, the logic of the Left is now that, if you are a trans person who murders a bunch of Christian school kids, this is the fault of the society that refuse to accept you for who you truly are,” Shapiro, the best-selling author and Daily Wire co-founder said on his Wednesday radio show and podcast.

An NBC News story under the headline, “Fear pervades Tennessee’s trans community amid focus on Nashville shooter’s gender identity,” included interviews with drag performers and transgender activists. The Washington Post published about Rep. Andy Ogles, a Republican whose district includes the school where the shooting took place, and his support for the Second Amendment. Other news outlets implied that Tennessee’s recently passed laws banning chemical and surgical sex change procedures on children may have helped provoke the shooting.

“It was obvious that the media were going to turn to the narrative,” Shapiro said. “It is your fault if you refuse to accept that a boy can become a girl and a girl can become a boy. Then, if a person who is a woman who says she is man murders a bunch of school kids, it’s because of your lack of acceptance.”

Shapiro praised the heroism of the Nashville police officers who responded to the incident and shot the woman. The Daily Wire is not naming her, in keeping with a policy to deprive mass killers of the notoriety they often crave. Officers Rex Engelbert and Michael Collazo engaged her on the second floor of the Covenant School and likely prevented more deaths. It was a stark contrast to the police response in Uvalde, Texas, last year, when police waited in a hallway while a gunman slaughtered 21 people inside a locked classroom.

“The police officers in Nashville did not act like the police officers involved in Texas,” Shapiro said. “They actually did what they were supposed to do. They ran toward the sound of fire. This [was] tremendous bravery by these officers.”

Shapiro noted that the killer had reportedly been under treatment for emotional problems. While it is still not known if those issues had to do with her gender dysphoria, Shapiro said it is unwise for society to continue treating transgenderism as if it is psychologically or medically acceptable.

“Maybe the vast incentivization by our society of that particular mental disorder, maybe a society that declares that mental disorders are not in fact, mental disorders so long as they check particular political marks — maybe that is part of the problem here,” he said.

The fact that a person who committed such a monstrous act identified as transgender poses a problem for the media and the Left at large, he said. Seen through the identity politics lens, victims just can’t be victimizers, he said.

“Therefore, we must find a narrative that allows you to maintain your victimhood status,” Shapiro said. “And that’s precisely what the media have attempted to do today. The real victim here is not the school kids who were gunned down for their Christian beliefs.”
