The decade's most triggering comedy
On Monday, Democratic cities such as Washington, D.C., and Boston, Massachusetts, announced new vaccine mandates for public workers and vaccine passports for private food, entertainment, and shopping venues to combat Omicron and Covid-19. That same day, ABC News reported that the first death attributable to Omicron occurred in Harris County, Texas. The juxtaposition of one death attributed to Omicron in a nation of millions with Democratic mayors panicking and racing to enact new restrictions should cause Americans — if they have not already — to question why our elected leaders are going to such extremes over what experts so far say has generally mild symptoms.
“Health officials in Texas announced Monday that it recorded the first death related to the omicron COVID-19 variant,” ABC News reported.
The man was in his 50s, unvaccinated, and had underlying health conditions.
Fox News reported that the Omicron variant comprised the vast majority of new infections last week. The first and only death attributed to Omicron in the U.S. so far comes just prior to President Joe Biden’s expected address to the nation unveiling new measures to defeat COVID-19:
The president is set to deliver remarks just hours after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that omicron variant is now the dominant strain of the coronavirus in the United States, making up 73.2% of new infections in the week that ended Dec.18—up from just 12.6% the prior week.
Across the country, schools are beginning to shift to remote learning, restaurants are closing their doors to the public, and events are once again being canceled as a result of the new omicron variant of the coronavirus. Broadway shows in New York City have been canceled, along with the Rockettes’ “Christmas Spectacular” shows. The National Hockey League also announced a pause to its season.
Even as COVID-19 surges in areas like the nation’s capital, it is not exactly clear if deaths are rising as well. On Monday, The Daily Wire reported that Mayor Muriel Bowser enacted new COVID-19 restrictions while the city was averaging just one death per day:
“The seven-day average of covid deaths in DC is 1. Just last night, there were 4 homicides in DC. They have reached their highest number since 2003. But @MayorBowser decided to declare a state of emergency for covid,” Greg Price tweeted.
That daily average was confirmed by The New York Times COVID-19 tracker, which also reported that over the past two weeks, “an average of 360 cases per day were reported in Washington, D.C., a 252 percent increase from the average two weeks ago. Since the beginning of the pandemic, at least 1 in 10 residents have been infected, a total of 71,219 reported cases.”
Last week The Daily Wire noted that the Biden administration was warning this winter would be one of severe illness and death for unvaccinated Americans:
“I want to send a direct message to the American people: Due to the steps we’ve taken, Omicron has not yet spread as fast as it would have otherwise done,” Biden told reporters after a COVID-19 briefing at the White House.
“But it’s here now and it’s spreading and it’s gonna increase,” the president added.
“We are looking at a winter of severe illness and death for the unvaccinated — for themselves, their families, and the hospitals they’ll soon overwhelm. But there’s good news: If you’re vaccinated and you have your booster shot, you’re protected from severe illness and death,” Biden said.
Despite that warning, several medical experts have said that the Omicron variant — though more transmissible — will not be any more deadly than previous variants. Celebrity Chef Andrew Gruel pointed out that what we do know will be “killed” are restaurants amidst the new restrictions.
“The one thing we know Omicron is killing are restaurants, specifically in NYC. Sales are down over 50% within weeks, restaurants are closing and employees are being laid-off across the board,” he tweeted. “Sales transferred to 3rd party delivery which will benefit larger corporate chains.”

The government has not explained “why” any of these economy-crushing measures are necessary other than that many people could get Omicron without them. The question becomes, based on the data, what does that entail? So far, the data isn’t matching up with what the government is prescribing.
