A quiet Pennsylvania town has transformed into the latest battleground over gender politics after high schoolers handed their homecoming queen crown to a biological male.

The move left some residents furious and school officials scrambling to defend the vote.

The coronation of Sammi Gutierrez at Fairview High School’s weekend bash unleashed a social media firestorm. Disgruntled locals blasted the decision online, arguing that a biological female was robbed of her big moment on the royal court.

Student Council Secretary Logan Thompson accused offended community members of throwing a tantrum over the results.

As tempers flared online, local politicians and school bureaucrats circled the wagons around the newly elected homecoming queen.

Erie County Executive Christina Vogel wrote on Facebook, “She’s been out for years and she’s a lovely person. (She goes by she, btw). All the kids know and, obviously love her. The students were given the opportunity to vote. They did. I agree with the OP. Find something else to focus on. The school district is not going to rescind the Homecoming Queen title because people on FB don’t like it.”

In response to the backlash, a district teacher organized dozens of supporters to attend Monday’s school board meeting. A packed, standing-room-only crowd filled the meeting. While no detractors spoke at the podium, district superintendent Donald Stark proudly trumpeted, “Fairview School District has student-led festivities, homecoming being one of them. That includes the selection of homecoming court. We promote inclusion. That reflects our vision statement which emphasizes respecting and embracing the uniqueness of each individual in the pursuit of their personal success.”

“Sammi was voted by the students and some parents didn’t like that,” student Preston Johnson said, dismissing the neighborhood uproar. “We voted, and Sammi is our homecoming queen.”
