ADAMS: Our Worthless Title IX Office

   DailyWire.com

There are many good reasons to abolish Title IX. Among the better reasons is that the individual offices at most of our universities have become overrun with ideologues. It isn’t just that they don’t care about instances of gender discrimination against males. They are actually in favor of anti-male discrimination — and they will go to great lengths to protect those who engage in it. A prime example of this is a yet-to-be-answered Title IX complaint that I filed in October of 2018. James Barrett has covered the facts leading up to the complaint previously here at The Daily Wire. They are briefly recapitulated below in this column, which also includes some crucial developments in the case:

In August of 2018, two females, one a student at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW), the other an alumna from UNCW, paid a visit to the Women’s Studies and Resource Center (WSRC) located in Bear Hall on the UNCW campus. The student is a member of Ratio Christi (RC), a campus Christian club, which also employs the alumna. Their purpose was to request funding and co-sponsorship from the WSRC for a campus debate on the topic of abortion, which was scheduled to occur on February 21st, 2019 — and which now has obviously already taken place. The debate was between Dr. Willie Parker, who is a professional abortionist, and myself. You can watch the debate (which was also covered by Frank Camp and Amanda Prestigiacomo here on The Daily Wire) by clicking on this link.

It is important to note that before the student and alumna went to the WSRC for funding, they had already secured partial funding for the event from the Student Government Association, or SGA. However, there was a cap (of $4500) on the amount the SGA could give them. They needed additional funds to pay for Parker’s honorarium, hotel, and airplane ticket. (Note: In addition to earning millions of dollars killing innocent human beings, Dr. Willie Parker demands a $5000 speaking fee to boast about it. He also demands to be flown to these speaking events first class).

Regrettably, the director of the WSRC denied the funding and co-sponsorship request. According to the student and the alumna, a very concise explanation for the denial was provided by the director; namely, that abortion is a “women’s issue” and that the debate participants are both male. According to these two reliable eyewitnesses, there was no other explanation offered for refusing to provide funding and co-sponsorship for the debate except for the gender of the participants in the debate. The WSRC Director indicated that she would consult her board for a second opinion. However, after consulting with her board, there was no reversal of the original decision.

Just a few days after I learned of this gender-based denial of funding, I received an email from Jose Sartarelli, who is the current chancellor of UNCW. His email demanded that we report all instances of gender-based discrimination. I responded to his demand by filing a Title IX complaint against the WSRC on October 16th, 2018. Since then, there have been several disturbing developments in my case. They are listed below in chronological order:

  • UNCW missed the sixty-day deadline to answer my complaint.
  • UNCW removed me as the complainant (substituting the student witness as the new complainant) and reclassified me as a witness. This was despite the fact that a) I did not witness the discriminatory remarks, b) I am the one that filed the complaint, and c) I was the target of gender-based discrimination, thus making me the injured party.
  • UNCW initially attempted to block my access to updates on the status of the investigation by claiming that the information was protected by FERPA — a result made possible only by their intentional misclassification of the student-witness as the complainant.
  • UNCW granted itself a sixty-day extension in order to complete this very simple investigation.
  • UNCW failed to make the extended deadline and then proceeded to grant itself another extension for a period of “two to four weeks.”
  • UNCW missed the third deadline. As of this writing in April, we are fast approaching the six-months mark of an investigation that was supposed to be completed in sixty days.

Despite all of this nonsense, I did manage to debate Dr. Willie Parker on the campus of UNCW in February. But the debate took place only because a) I did it pro bono, and b) I was able to secure funding from a private source outside of the university (thanks to the generosity of Summit Ministries, see www.Summit.org).

I resent deeply having to beg for funding from off-campus sources simply because my university is engaged in what certainly appears to be unlawful gender discrimination. I resent even more the fact that they seem to be violating federal law and their own policies in order to shield the administration from legal liability.

Readers of this account should interpret these events in light of the recent controversy involving the removal of the Silent Sam statue at UNC-Chapel Hill. University administrators clearly violated the law for ideological reasons and lied to the Board of Governors in the process. Sadly, few of them have been held accountable. It appears that the 2018-2019 academic year will go down as the time when UNC administrators simply decided to become a law unto themselves.

Indeed, over the course of the last year, supporters of UNC have become concerned that mobs of lawless ideologues will soon take over entire UNC campuses. They have already taken over many of the administrative offices. That is why such offices need to be eliminated. That includes the Women’s Centers, which are inherently discriminatory. It also includes many Title IX Offices that actively undermine the rule of law in order to protect them.
