Actress Anne Hathaway said Tueday that abortion can be “another word for mercy,” and advocated for abortion in the context of women advancing in their careers.
“My own personal experience with abortion — and I don’t think we talk about this enough — abortion can be another word for mercy,” the 39-year-old told the women of “The View.”
“We don’t know,” Hathaway continued. “We know that no two pregnancies are alike, and it follows that no two lives are alike, it follows that no two conceptions are alike.”
Notably, pro-life advocates often emphasize the unique human life of the unborn, a tack Hathaway seemed to take while promoting the act.
“So how can we have a law, how can we have a point of view on this that says we must treat everything the same?” the “Les Miserables” actress said. “When you allow for choice, you allow for flexibility, which is what we need in order to be human.”
Hathaway took to Instagram in June to denounce the overturning of Roe v. Wade, effectively kicking back abortion issues to the states.
“Looking back on photos of this beloved film that shaped the lives and careers of so many—mine included—I am struck by the fact that the young female characters in this movie built their lives and careers in a country that honored their right to have choice over their own reproductive health,” the actress captioned photos of “The Devil Wears Prada.” “See you in the fight xx.”

“We’re in the fight every day,” she told “The View,” referring to her Instagram post. “We’re in the fight every minute. And you mentioned ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ turning sweet 16. Some 16-year-old’s life has been irrevocably changed because of the overturning of Roe v. Wade.”
“I played a young woman who was starting out her career. And when you are a young woman starting out your career, your reproductive destiny matters a great deal,” she continued. “And I just — it had just happened and I just — I think about it all the time. I think we all think about it all the time, and what the implications are, and what it means to live in a country that puts us in this position.”
“And by the way, this is not a moral conversation about abortion, this is a practical conversation about women’s rights, and, by the way, human rights, because women’s rights are human rights,” Hathaway added.

Aside from heavy abortion promotion, Hathaway also advocates for “trans rights.” Notably, the fight over transgenderism is largely centered around children, and if it should be legal for minors to undergo irreversible treatments and surgeries. Girls and women’s sports and female-only spaces are also a point of political contention.
“TRANS RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS,” Hathaway posted to her social media in 2020.
“In the middle of a pandemic, in the middle of Pride Month, on the fourth anniversary of the Pulse Nightclub shooting, on the week Riah Milton and Dominique ‘Rem’mie’ Fells – two Black Trans Women – were murdered, Donald Trump erased Transgender civil rights protections in healthcare,” she claimed. “No.”
“I am as angry as I have ever been,” the actress added. “To my Trans brothers and sisters: I am so sorry. I am so, so sorry. I love you, I stand with you, I will fight this alongside you. #VOTE.”
