<p>Police responded to an active shooter situation at Villanova University on Thursday afternoon, as new students were moving into their dorms at the private Catholic research university west of Philadelphia. Villanova President Rev. Peter M. Donohue said that the reported shooting was a &#8220;cruel hoax,&#8221; adding that no one was injured, NBC 10 Philadelphia <a href="https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/villanova-students-warned-of-active-shooter-on-campus/4257685/">reported</a>.</p>
<p>At around 4:30 p.m. ET, while many students and parents were attending mass, an alert went out from Villanova instructing everyone to shelter in place and stay away from the Law School&#8217;s Scarpa Hall. A video posted on X showed a representative for Villanova telling a group of people who had taken shelter that the active shooter situation was &#8220;supposedly in the library at the law school.&#8221;</p>
<p>The campus was placed on lockdown over the incident just hours after Villanova Law <a href="https://x.com/Villanova_Law/status/1958620709808206026?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1958620709808206026%7Ctwgr%5Ec8b9ece089c78ab88cf83b134bb6b0ff50ce0254%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nbcphiladelphia.com%2Fnews%2Flocal%2Fvillanova-students-warned-of-active-shooter-on-campus%2F4257685%2F">posted</a> that it hosted a &#8220;successful&#8221; orientation for students that was followed by a picnic. The school year is set to begin next week.</p>
<p>&#8220;Today, as we are celebrating Orientation Mass to welcome our newest Villanovans and their families to our community, panic and terror ensued with the news of a possible shooter at the Law School,&#8221; Donohue said. &#8220;Mercifully, no one was injured, and we now know that it was a cruel hoax—there was no active shooter, no injuries and no evidence of firearms present on campus. While that is a blessing and relief, I know today’s events have shaken our entire community.&#8221;</p>

Active Shooter Scare On Villanova Campus Was ‘Cruel Hoax’

<p>President Donald Trump said in the Oval Office on Friday that Chicago is next on his list of places where he wants to use his power to root out violent crime.</p>
<p>Speaking to reporters and praising federal agents for the violent crime crackdown in Washington, D.C., Trump set his sights on Chicago, where gang violence and shootings have become the norm under Democratic leadership.</p>
<p>&#8220;Chicago is a mess, you have an incompetent mayor, grossly incompetent, and we will straighten that one out next. That will be our next one after this, and it won’t even be tough,&#8221; Trump <a href="https://wgntv.com/news/chicago-news/i-think-chicago-will-be-next-president-trump-signals-plans-to-extend-crackdown-on-crime-to-chicago/">said</a>.</p>
<p>Trump also hinted at moving federal resources to New York City after taking care of Chicago.</p>
<p>&#8220;And the people in Chicago &#8230; are screaming for us to come. They are wearing red hats, just like this one,&#8221; Trump said, referring to his &#8220;Trump Was Right About Everything&#8221; hat. “African American ladies, beautiful ladies, are saying, ‘Please, Mr. Trump, come to Chicago, please.’ I did great with the black vote, as you know, and they want something to happen. So, I think Chicago will be next and then we’ll help with New York.”</p>
<p>While Chicago has reported a decrease in homicides and other violent crimes in recent years, the Windy City is still <a href="https://news.wttw.com/2024/03/11/homicides-drop-nationwide-chicago-lags-behind-other-major-cities-why">lagging behind</a> some other major cities in tackling its murder problem. In 2023, Chicago reported 617 homicides, which was a decrease from the 715 murders in 2022, but still higher than America&#8217;s two largest cities, New York City and Los Angeles.</p>
<p>Earlier this month, 34 people were shot, five of whom were killed, in shootings across Chicago during one weekend, ABC 7 Chicago <a href="https://abc7chicago.com/post/chicago-shootings-weekend-least-10-shot-2-fatally-gun-violence-city-police-department-says/17483197/">reported</a>. The violence has continued this week, with three people killed and another person wounded in multiple shootings in the city on Thursday, according to <a href="https://www.fox32chicago.com/news/chicago-crime-garfield-park-shootings">Fox 32</a>.</p>
<p>Chicago&#8217;s elected Democratic politicians criticized Trump over his comments on sending troops to the city, with Mayor Brandon Johnson calling Trump&#8217;s approach &#8220;uncoordinated, uncalled for, and unsound,&#8221; according to <a href="https://wgntv.com/news/chicago-news/i-think-chicago-will-be-next-president-trump-signals-plans-to-extend-crackdown-on-crime-to-chicago/">WGN 9</a>.</p>

<p>&#8220;Unlawfully deploying the National Guard to Chicago has the potential to inflame tensions between residents and law enforcement when we know that trust between police and residents is foundational to building safer communities,&#8221; Johnson added. &#8220;An unlawful deployment would be unsustainable and would threaten to undermine the historic progress we have. In the past year alone, we have reduced homicides by more than 30%, robberies by 35%, and shootings by almost 40%. We need to continue to invest in what is working.&#8221;</p>
<p>Federal and local law enforcement have <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/feds-nab-suspected-ms-13-gangster-top-700-arrests-dc-crackdown">arrested</a> over 700 suspected criminals on the capital&#8217;s streets since Trump sent in federal agents and the National Guard, with most of the arrests taking place in D.C.&#8217;s highest crime areas, according to the White House. D.C. police also reported a murder-free eight days stretching back to last Thursday, according to <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/dc-has-murder-free-week-ag-bondi-touts-77-more-arrests-federal-takeover">Fox News</a>.</p>
<p>In Washington, D.C., Trump has the authority to deploy National Guard troops and federal law enforcement officers through the &#8220;Home Rule Act.&#8221; Deploying the National Guard to another American city wouldn&#8217;t be as simple and would likely require Trump to sidestep Democratic Governor JB Pritzker, similar to what the president did when he sent troops to Los Angeles earlier this summer. That move was challenged in court and is currently before a federal judge.</p>

Trump Says Chicago Is ‘Next’ For D.C.-Style Federal Law Enforcement Operation

<p>Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney <a href="https://x.com/i/broadcasts/1BRKjgpmOdNGw">announced</a> on Friday that the country was suspending many of its retaliatory tariffs on the United States after the Trump administration &#8220;reaffirmed&#8221; its commitment to the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement (USMCA).</p>
<p>Canada is removing tariffs on most products from the United States, but will keep in place a 25% levy on U.S. steel, aluminum, and vehicles, since those products are not directly covered under the USMCA. In March, Canada placed a 25% tariff on many U.S. products after the Trump administration imposed a 25% duty on Canadian steel and aluminum.</p>
<p>Bloomberg was first to <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-08-22/canada-to-drop-many-retaliatory-tariffs-in-olive-branch-to-trump">report</a> on Carney&#8217;s announcement, saying that the move appears to be the Canadian government extending an &#8220;olive branch&#8221; to President Donald Trump.</p>
<p>&#8220;As in previous trade disputes, Canada has implemented a series of retaliatory tariffs. Their objectives have been to protect Canadian workers and businesses and to incentivize a negotiated settlement with the United States. A few other countries followed suit,&#8221; Carney said. &#8220;In a positive and very important development earlier this month, just a few weeks ago, the United States reaffirmed a core commitment to our free trade agreement by reinforcing that those Canadian exports to the United States that are compliant with that agreement &#8230; will not be subject to &#8230; tariffs.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;As a result of that decision by the United States, the actual U.S. tariff rate on Canadian goods is 5.6%,&#8221; Carney added. &#8220;Compare that to the 16% global average. That remains the lowest amongst all of the United States&#8217; trading partners, and more than 85% of Canada-U.S. trade is now tariff-free.&#8221;</p>

<p>While Trump signed an order in late July imposing a 35% tariff on Canadian goods, the White House <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/fact-sheets/2025/07/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-amends-duties-to-address-the-flow-of-illicit-drugs-across-our-northern-border/#:~:text=ADDRESSING%20A%20NATIONAL%20EMERGENCY:%20Today,effect%20on%20August%201%2C%202025.">clarified</a> that most products are exempt under the USMCA, putting the actual average tariff rate on Canada at 5.6%. The prime minister said that Canada &#8220;has the best trade deal with the United States&#8221; as the numbers stand right now.</p>
<p>A White House official told <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/08/22/canada-retaliatory-tariffs-trump-autos-steel.html">CNBC</a> that Canada&#8217;s move was &#8220;long overdue,&#8221; adding, “We look forward to continuing our discussions with Canada on the Administration’s trade and national security concerns.&#8221; A White House official, speaking on condition of anonymity, reportedly told Bloomberg that Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick recently warned Canada about the retaliatory tariffs and encouraged them to drop the tariffs to set up a clear path to negotiations.</p>
<p>Canada backed down on its retaliatory tariffs after Carney spoke with Trump over the phone, a conversation that Carney called “productive and wide-ranging.” The USMCA, a deal that Trump negotiated during his first term in the White House, is set to be reviewed later this year, according to CNBC. Carney added during his press conference on Friday that Canada will continue to discuss &#8220;a new form of trade and security partnership with the United States.&#8221;</p>

Trump Scores Trade Win As Canada Removes Several Retaliatory Tariffs On U.S.

<p>Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell suggested on Friday that central bank policymakers could cut interest rates at their meeting next month under current conditions.</p>
<p>During a speech at the Fed&#8217;s annual Economic Policy Symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Powell said that “the balance of risks appear to be shifting” between the goals of full employment and stable prices, CNBC <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/08/22/powell-indicates-conditions-may-warrant-interest-rate-cuts-as-fed-proceeds-carefully.html">reported</a>. Powell added that the labor market and the economy are in a good place, even as President Donald Trump&#8217;s tariffs take effect. Still, the Fed chair said that the tariffs present risks that must be considered, as inflation could rise.</p>
<p>The stock market <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/08/22/business/powell-speech-jackson-hole-fed-inflation.html">spiked</a> following Powell&#8217;s speech, with the Dow Jones and Nasdaq Composite rising 2%, while the S&amp;P 500 was up more than 1.5%.</p>
<p>Powell <a href="https://www.wsj.com/economy/central-banking/powell-highlights-job-market-worries-opening-path-to-rate-cut-4169a7ba">said</a> that the U.S. economy is in the middle of an “unusual situation,” with risks of a worse-than-expected labor market rising, according to The Wall Street Journal.</p>
<p>“And if those risks materialize, they can do so quickly in the form of sharply higher layoffs and rising unemployment,” Powell said.</p>
<p>The Federal Reserve often lowers interest rates if unemployment is high in an attempt to stimulate economic activity, which can lead to companies hiring more people. The year-over-year inflation rate of 2.7%, however, remains above the Fed&#8217;s 2% benchmark. The next inflation report is scheduled to be released on September 11, and the Fed is set to meet again to discuss interest rates on September 16-17.</p>

Earlier this year, Trump threatened to fire the Fed chair, which would be an unprecedented move for a president to make, but Trump has backed off that threat, saying he will wait until Powell&#8217;s term is complete in May of next year to replace him. The Fed&#8217;s latest decision to keep rates steady also caused division among the policymakers, with two Fed governors, Michelle Bowman and Christopher Waller — who are candidates to become the next Fed chair — publicly disagreeing with the Fed&#8217;s July decision.</p>
<p>Trump&#8217;s latest <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/us/trump-again-attacks-fed-chair-says-powell-hurting-housing-industry-2025-08-19/">knocks</a> on Powell came on Wednesday when he said that Powell&#8217;s reluctance to lower interest rates was &#8220;hurting the Housing Industry, very badly.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;People can&#8217;t get a Mortgage because of him. There is no Inflation, and every sign is pointing to a major Rate Cut,&#8221; Trump said.</p>
<p>The Trump administration is set to begin interviewing candidates for the next Fed chair after Labor Day, according to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. The administration has <a href="https://www.foxbusiness.com/economy/treasurys-bessent-says-interviews-potential-fed-chairs-start-around-labor-day">announced</a> that 11 people are in the running for the position, including Fed Governors Bowman and Waller, White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett, former Fed Governor Kevin Warsh, Fed Governor Philip Jefferson, Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan, former Fed Governor Larry Lindsey, and former St. Louis Fed President James Bullard.</p>
<p>Rick Rieder, BlackRock&#8217;s chief investment officer for global fixed income, David Zervos, the chief market strategist for Jefferies, and Mark Sumerlin, former deputy director of the National Economic Council, are also on the short list.</p>

Fed Chair Jerome Powell Hints At Possible Rate Cut, Wall Street Cheers

<p>President Donald Trump threatened early Friday morning to take “complete and total” control of Washington, D.C., if Democratic Mayor Muriel Bowser and the Metropolitan Police Department don’t address “false and highly inaccurate crime figures.”</p>
<p>In a <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/115070876988527695">post</a> on Truth Social, Trump praised the National Guard and local law enforcement for their significant presence on the capital’s streets as the administration seeks to address violent crime in D.C. Trump also said that D.C. has gone more than a week without a murder, a statistic that the Metropolitan Police Department <a href="https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/dc-murder-free-week-ag-153622367.html?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAGPc7XoBfmhR2gfo8lvAgSCmAhMhDj1FoOaUvH2_YX4A5DWeMVx_KSYEn8heUxj4v8NSWShZWvbfqeQlL0Jye-byqH2tfu5WfUnn2DS5B7WjjGXY4A1NF4aBsMMv-B8nDTzJGYNm1nd8j63nNf2YSJ-ZFu8cvoyj91v4iys3EC80">confirmed</a> to Fox News on Thursday.</p>

<p>Trump then called out Mayor Bowser, arguing that more work needs to be done to fix the city’s reporting of crime statistics.</p>

<p>“Mayor Muriel Bowser must immediately stop giving false and highly inaccurate crime figures, or bad things will happen, including a complete and total Federal takeover of the City!” he said. “Washington D.C. will soon be great again!!!”</p>
<p>The D.C. Police Union, which represents 3,000 officers with the Metropolitan Police Department, has said that there are issues with the accuracy of the crime data reported by the police department. Mayor Bowser has highlighted the police department’s statistics, which have shown a significant decrease in violent crime in the past two years, to push back against Trump’s National Guard deployment and attempted federal takeover of the D.C. police.</p>
<p>“I think that there’s a possibility that crime has come down,” said D.C. Police Union President Gregg Pemberton, according to <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/justice-department/justice-department-investigating-whether-dc-police-manipulated-crime-d-rcna225886">NBC News</a>. Pemberton added, however, that it’s “preposterous” to believe that crime is down as much as police and city officials are claiming.</p>
<p>“What we know, what our members know, is that we go call to call to call out on the streets at night, going from robbery to carjacking to stabbing to shooting, and we just know that crime is ubiquitous, and it’s all in every quadrant of the city,” he said. “So to have people tell us, ‘well, crime is down, you shouldn’t be worried about that,’ that’s not the reality that we feel on the streets.”</p>
<p>Earlier this week, the Department of Justice launched an investigation into whether D.C. police officials have cooked the books on crime stats, The Washington Post <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2025/08/19/trump-police-dc-takeover-justice-department/">reported</a>. In May, a D.C. police commander was placed on leave over accusations that he altered crime data. The commander, Michael Pulliam, denied the allegations. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro is leading the DOJ investigation and will likely look into the actions of multiple police officials.</p>
<p>When Trump first announced his operation to “make D.C. safe again” last week, the Justice Department and Attorney General Pam Bondi took complete control of the Metropolitan Police Department and named Drug Enforcement Administration head Terry Cole as the emergency police commissioner.</p>
<p>A federal judge, however, blocked the DOJ from taking complete control of the police department. The DOJ worked out a deal last Friday to leave local officials in charge of the department while Cole was put in charge of directing Mayor Bowser to provide police services as the attorney general “deems necessary and appropriate,” according to <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2025/08/15/doj-dc-police-department-control-hearing-00512503">POLITICO</a>.</p>

Trump Threatens D.C. Mayor: Fix Crime Stats Or Face ‘Total Federal Takeover’

<p>Right-wing political commentator Tucker Carlson&#8217;s latest podcast episode featured a Cornell professor who suggested that there&#8217;s a good argument to be made for the United States backing Nazi leader Adolf Hitler during World War II instead of fighting the Nazis with Joseph Stalin and the Soviet Union.</p>
<p>David Collum, a chemistry and chemical biology professor at the Ivy League school, told Carlson in an episode published on Wednesday that he read a book about the &#8220;revisionist history of World War II&#8221; and came away believing that &#8220;the story we got about World War II is all wrong, actually.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;I think that&#8217;s right,&#8221; Carlson replied.</p>
<p>&#8220;One can make the argument [that] we should have sided with Hitler and fought Stalin,&#8221; Collum added. &#8220;Patton said that. And maybe there wouldn&#8217;t have been a holocaust, right? But Stalin was awful by any metric, and we weren&#8217;t his ally.&#8221;</p>
<p>In the episode, which can be viewed in full <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orgvAk7JhBI&amp;t=3943s">here</a>, Carlson offered no pushback to Collum&#8217;s claim that a U.S.-Nazi alliance would have been preferable during World War II, or to the bizarre idea that the U.S. siding with Hitler would have somehow prevented the Nazi regime from murdering six million Jews.</p>
<p>The Nazis <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/articles/zkxwgwx">began</a> instituting antisemitic laws in 1935, four years before the beginning of World War II and six years before the United States declared war on Germany. Jewish persecution intensified in 1937 and 1938 when Nazis began throwing people into concentration camps, and nearly 100 Jews were killed during the Kristallnacht pogrom. Hitler began creating concentration camps specifically for Jews in 1940, a year before U.S. troops joined its European allies to fight the Nazis. The largest mass murder of Jews under Hitler took place in 1942, just months after the United States had joined the fight.</p>
<p>As for Collum&#8217;s claim that Patton wanted to side with Hitler, there&#8217;s no historical record to back it up. While U.S. General George S. Patton believed that the Soviet Union would pose a major threat to the United States, he never advocated for siding with Hitler to fight Stalin. British Prime Minister Winston Churchill also said in the years following World War II that the Soviet Union was &#8220;in some ways more formidable than Hitler,&#8221; but he never suggested that it would have been better to fight Stalin alongside the Nazis.</p>
<p>Diana West, the author of the book that Collum credited for his revisionist take on World War II, said on Thursday that her book &#8220;does not argue for anything remotely like aligning with Hitler.&#8221;</p>

<p>The former Fox News host was blasted after clips of Collum&#8217;s comments began circulating on social media.</p>
<p>&#8220;So now we should’ve backed Hitler? Let’s see if these sh*t heads are denounced by any but a handful of us on radio or TV,&#8221; <a href="https://x.com/marklevinshow/status/1958345094001553896">said</a> conservative broadcaster Mark Levin.</p>
<p>Carlson <a href="https://x.com/TuckerCarlson/status/1958552781242991095">responded</a> to Levin, writing, &#8220;Settle down, Mark. Nobody endorsed Hitler.&#8221;</p>
<p>During his interview with Carlson, Collum also claimed that when Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, &#8220;It wasn&#8217;t a war.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;It was a police action,&#8221; Collum said. &#8220;And they weren&#8217;t killing people. They were moving troops across the border.&#8221;</p>
<p>Nearly 60 people were killed and 170 people were wounded on the first day of Russia&#8217;s invasion, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/ukraine-says-57-people-killed-first-day-russian-invasion-2022-02-24/">according</a> to Ukrainian authorities.</p>
<p>The Cornell professor added that it only became a war because &#8220;NATO wanted a war,&#8221; suggesting that the U.S.-European alliance was the aggressor in the conflict.</p>
<p>&#8220;And so, it morphed from being a police action, which I think Putin was trying to throw a fast ball past NATO&#8217;s chin and saying, &#8216;Back off on this whole NATO thing,'&#8221; Collum said.</p>
<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s correct,&#8221; Carlson replied.</p>
