A Democratic candidate seeking to represent Oklahoma’s 5th District in Congress has issued an apology for allegedly getting belligerently drunk at a sleepover, berating several middle school-aged girls, and vomiting in a hamper at her friends house on Valentine’s Day of this year.
Abby Broyles, the woman in question, blamed her supposed misdeeds on an adverse reaction between the wine that she was drinking and an anxiety medication. After apparently calling one young girl “acne f***er” and degrading one girl for being a “Hispanic f***er”, while also calling another a “judgey f**er,” Broyles said her words that night do not reflect her character and that she doesn’t remember what actually happened because she “blacked out” from the alcohol and medicine.
Sarah Matthews, a local mother, attended the Valentine’s Day sleepover party with her daughter and friends. The mom who hosted the party invited Broyles and she started drinking alcohol after arriving, Oklahoma News 4 reported. But Broyles allegedly had more than she could handle and became abusive toward the sleepover-goers, Matthews told the media.
Oklahoma News 4 reported:
“It was like an attack,” said Sarah Matthews, a mother with a daughter at the party who said her daughter was verbally attacked. “Like personal, vicious attacks.”
Other mothers have also corroborated that same story, claiming that Broyles arrived at the Valentine’s sleepover at the invitation of the homeowner. Matthews said she dropped off her 12-year-old daughter with a group of girls. She said she never expected anything like this to happen though.
Matthews found out about the incident the next morning from her daughter who was present at the V-Day slumber party.
“She proceeded to tell me that Abby Broyles had been at the house and was very drunk and calling them all mfer’s, f’er this f’er that,” Matthews told the press. “[Broyles] called somebody acne f’er, somebody Hispanic f’er, called my daughter judgey f’er for not wanting to sleep with a blanket that she cleaned up wine with.”
“You don’t speak to any human that way, let alone a little girl who’s 12 to 13,” Matthews remarked. “That can really change how a little girl views herself for the rest of her life.”
“Mama Bear starts coming out because you’re like, this is disgusting,” Matthews said at one point, relaying her disapproval.
For her part, Broyles confirmed that she indeed had a bad experience that night based off what she was consuming:
“[The home owner] asked me to come over. She asked me to bring some wine,” Broyles said in a recent interview with Oklahoma News 4. “We had wine and sushi and a couple of hours later, we were upstairs in their theater room watching a movie.”
“For years I have struggled with stress and anxiety and insomnia. I took the bar exam on 2 hours of sleep,” Broyles said in defense. “I mean, this is how far this goes back for me. And she knows that. And she gave me a medication I had never taken before. And I had an adverse reaction. Instead of helping me sleep, I hallucinated. And I don’t remember anything until I woke up or came to, and I was throwing up in a hamper.”
Broyles again reiterated that she does not have any recollection of her alleged debauchery, but that she is “sorry from the bottom of [her] heart” for any harm caused. She also does not think she has a substance abuse problem, Oklahoma News 4 noted:
ABBY BROYLES: First of all, I want to apologize to the families again, and for people who say I just blacked out and I’m making this up, you don’t know me. I would never ever say anything hurtful. I’ve never, ever would say something hurtful like those things. And that’s why I know I was not in my right mind. I know that that’s what happened because of that combination of things. And I deeply, deeply regret it.
KEVIN OGLE: Do you have a problem with any kind of substance, alcohol or anything like that? Do you feel like you do?
ABBY BROYLES : No.
KEVIN OGLE: Let me just say this. You were a little girl that age at one time. You remember what it’s like in middle school. What would you like to say to those young girls?
ABBY BROYLES: I want to say sorry from the bottom of my heart, I apologize for any hurt or damage or trauma that my behavior, when I didn’t know what I was doing, caused. I’m deeply sorry.
