House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) on Monday released a supercut of Democrats defending Joe Biden’s mental acuity as Republicans investigate an alleged “cover-up” of the former president’s decline while in office.
The video, which is more than 14 minutes long, comes on the one-year anniversary of Biden abandoning his 2024 re-election bid following a faltering presidential debate against now-President Donald Trump that led to immense pressure from allies for the incumbent to drop out of the race. It features clips of congressional Democrats, officials in the Biden administration, and others in various media interviews, press conferences, and public events. Former Vice President Kamala Harris, who lost to Trump in the November election and is reportedly considering a run for California governor, is among them.
“One year ago today, President Biden’s disastrous debate performance made history by ending his re-election campaign and exposing the largest political cover-up in U.S. history,” Johnson said in a statement. “As House Republicans investigate the scandal to bring accountability, the American people should never forget how far Democrats and the media went to hide the truth about the mental decline of the man holding the most powerful position on earth. Our video compilation shows just a small sample of the countless receipts.”
Biden, now 82, and his health have become a focus of increased scrutiny over the past several months. A book by journalists Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson on Biden’s “deterioration” and efforts to “hide” it, his recent “aggressive” prostate cancer diagnosis, and the release of audio from an interview with special counsel Robert Hur in which the former president struggled to recall simple facts has further stoked the flames of speculation.
House Republicans are calling in former Biden administration staffers to interview for an inquiry looking for any efforts to conceal issues with the former president’s mental state and whether he authorized the use of autopen signatures for pardons and other major executive actions. Some pleaded the Fifth.
Senate Republicans are also looking into Biden’s mental fitness. And Trump has ordered a probe into whether aides improperly used an autopen for executive actions in an effort to conceal Biden’s health issues, suggesting there could be “implications” for the legality and validity of the presidential acts in question.
Democrats have largely shrugged off the investigations into Biden. Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA), the ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, took the opportunity to swipe at GOP colleagues over the “One Big, Beautiful Bill” that recently passed through Congress.
“The only person’s health that Republicans care about is Joe Biden’s – even as 17 million Americans lose access to health care thanks to their budget betrayal,” Garcia said on X.
Biden pushed back on the notion that he did not dictate his executive actions.
“Let me be clear: I made the decisions during my presidency. I made the decisions about the pardons, executive orders, legislation, and proclamations. Any suggestion that I didn’t is ridiculous and false,” Biden said in a statement. “This is nothing more than a distraction by Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans.”
However, Biden later conceded to The New York Times that he did not personally sign off on each of a large number of pardons before he left office.
