Former NFL coaching icon Bill Belichick’s leap to college football got off to a hot start on Monday night, but it quickly devolved into an embarrassment as his North Carolina Tar Heels were stomped in front of a home crowd by Texas Christian University.
Belichick and the Tar Heels were among college football’s media darlings leading up to the opening week. The game attracted nationwide attention with a primetime slot on ESPN, and UNC legends Michael Jordan, Lawrence Taylor, and Roy Williams were all in attendance to see Belichick coach his first game since parting ways with the New England Patriots in January 2024.
North Carolina got the ball first and came out hot, driving 83 yards down the field in just seven plays and opening up the game with a 7-0 lead. The drive had the Chapel Hill crowd rocking, but the excitement only lasted for a few minutes. At the end of the first quarter, TCU scored to tie the game, and North Carolina’s offense began sputtering. TCU closed out the first half by kicking two field goals and picking off UNC quarterback Gio Lopez and returning it for a touchdown.
UNC’s collapse continued into the second half as Belichick’s defense — coached by his son, Steve — was embarrassed multiple times when TCU’s running backs sprinted past defenders for long scoring plays. Fans began their mass exodus from Kenan Memorial Stadium in the third quarter after TCU’s defense struck again with a strip sack returned for a touchdown. Belichick’s college debut was officially spoiled with more than 18 minutes of game time remaining.
By the end of the third quarter, the Tar Heels were down 41-14, and the team gave up another touchdown in the fourth quarter, setting a school record for points allowed in a season opener. It was also the most points ever <a href="https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/bill-belichick-i-know-were-a-lot-better-than-that">surrendered</a> by a Belichick-coached team.
Belichick, who won six Super Bowls with Tom Brady and the New England Patriots between 2000 and 2023, said the Tar Heels have a lot to improve on, but added that he believes his team is a “lot better than that.” He also praised TCU’s performance.
“They were clearly the better team tonight,” Belichick <a href="https://www.espn.com/college-football/recap/_/gameId/401754523">said</a>. “They deserved to win and they did it decisively.”
On the other sideline, the TCU Horned Frogs believe they proved a point by quickly turning the attention away from Belichick and onto themselves.
“We wanted this game to be about us, and it was,” said TCU coach Sonny Dykes, according to ESPN.
“I think we all felt a little disrespected,” he added. “There was a lot of conversation about this game and none of it was about us.”

University of North Carolina Asheville parted ways with administrator Megan Pugh after video surfaced of the now-former Dean of Students bragging about her plans to use her position to promote Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) despite it being banned.
Corey DeAngelis shared the story in a thread posted to X on Tuesday, beginning with video obtained by an undercover journalist – working with Accuracy In Media —who spoke with Pugh and recorded her in her office.

The discussion turned to &#8220;implicit bias training,&#8221; and Pugh admitted, &#8220;The sort of guidance from the system office has been very specific about implicit bias training in a way that I don&#8217;t enjoy&#8221; — but she said that she intended to find a way to &#8220;incorporate&#8221; it in spite of that guidance.

DeAngelis followed that with an older video of Pugh beginning a video meeting with a moment of silence &#8220;to honor those lost to White Supremacist Violence&#8221; and a description of herself, written by Pugh, that read, &#8220;I center the teachings of Black, queer, feminist scholars as well as other BIPOC thought leaders in my leadership, advocacy, and student engagement practices.&#8221;
A report from Fox News Digital revealed that Pugh was &#8220;no longer employed by the university&#8221; following the video&#8217;s release.

The University of North Carolina System’s Board of Governors (BOG) announced Wednesday that it plans to cut millions of dollars from diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs.
The Board announced the decision at a Committee on University Governance meeting, The Daily Tar Heel <a href="https://www.dailytarheel.com/article/2024/09/university-bog-dei-breaking" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. UNC has already worked since May to eliminate DEI jobs, including 20 positions and 27 that were “realign[ed].”
Andrew Tripp, Senior Vice President and General Counsel in the Office of Legal Affairs at the BOG, announced at the meeting that $5.3 million would be redirected away from DEI initiatives.
“As we all know, UNC Chapel Hill typifies our larger campuses&#8217; responses,” Tripp said, according to the Tar Heel. “It&#8217;s required. Its compliance is required, eliminating dozens of positions.”
An “Equality Within the University of North Carolina” report that was signed by University Chancellor Lee Roberts and Provost Chris Clemens at the end of July detailed seven DEI positions that were eliminated in the school’s central administration. These eliminations included the Vice Provost for Equity and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer, along with six others.
Twelve positions were also eliminated from various schools, including the School of Education, Medicine, and the Gillings School of Global Public Health, among others. Entire DEI offices were eliminated from other schools, including the Kenan-Flagler Business School, the School of Medicine, and the School of Pharmacy. Other positions were realigned, including the College of Arts and Sciences’ Senior Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, who is now the Senior Associate Dean for Faculty and Staff Development.

Further, the report said, “centers that had DEI committees or workgroups have confirmed that they either no longer meet, have been formally ended, or have transitioned to other work.”
UNC-Chapel Hill had the most eliminated DEI positions, with UNC-Charlotte following with 9 positions eliminated. In total, the UNC system eliminated 59 positions and realigned 131 others, with $16 million redirected to other programs and more than $17 million saved.
In May, UNC’s board of trustees voted to gut funding for DEI and divert the money to campus police, The Daily Wire previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/unc-chapel-hill-votes-to-gut-dei-department-give-money-to-campus-police" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
At that time, the board <a href="https://www.wunc.org/education/2024-05-13/dei-unc-chapel-hill-trustees-vote-redirect-funding-police" target="_blank" rel="noopener">voted unanimously</a> to redirect $2.3 million from DEI initiatives toward campus safety and police. The aforementioned report outlined what has happened since that vote.
“I think that DEI in a lot of people’s minds is divisiveness, exclusion and indoctrination,” budget committee vice chairman Marty Kotis said during the vote. “We need more unity and togetherness, more dialogue, more diversity of thought.”
“It’s important to consider the needs of all 30,000 students, not just the 100 or so that may want to disrupt the university’s operations,” Kotis added. “It takes away resources for others.”

The leadership board that governs policies at the University of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/north-carolina" target="_blank" rel="noopener">North Carolina</a> voted on Thursday to repeal previous diversity, equity, and inclusion policies in favor of new neutrality focused guidelines. 
The vote from the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/university-of-north-carolina" target="_blank" rel="noopener">UNC</a> System Board of Governors ended a policy that forced each of the 17 schools in the system to have a DEI officer and to monitor campus diversity. New policies say that the university is committed to “equality of opportunity in education and employment.”
The <a href="https://www.northcarolina.edu/apps/policy/doc.php?type=pdf&amp;id=147" target="_blank" rel="noopener">new guidelines</a> say that the university is committed to free speech, academic freedom, and ensuring equality of different viewpoints and people. &#8220;

The policy adds that &#8220;addressing the needs of individuals — requires that each be treated as an individual deserving of dignity and inclusion. The University shall continue to ensure that diverse persons of any background, from North Carolina and beyond, are invited, included, and treated equally.&#8221;

“Non-discrimination, institutional neutrality, free expression, and academic freedom are all mutually reinforcing concepts and values,” UNC President Peter Hans <a href="https://www.newsobserver.com/news/local/education/article288507395.html">said</a> Thursday, according to the News and Observer. “We are here to serve all, not just those who agree with us. When these principles are faithfully held, they allow diversity in all forms to thrive.”
“It’s good for college students to encounter liberal ideas, to become familiar with the best forms of progressive thought our society has to offer,” he added. “It’s good for college students to encounter conservative ideas, to appreciate traditional perspectives and hear strong right-of-center arguments.” 
The previous <a href="https://www.northcarolina.edu/apps/policy/doc.php?type=pdf&amp;id=150" target="_blank" rel="noopener">guidelines</a> required the DEI officer to “promote and advance diversity and inclusion throughout all levels and areas of the institution” through training, outreach, education programs, and strategies.

In the new guidelines section on institutional neutrality, employees of the university are prohibited from consulting or contracting on “matters of contemporary political debate or social action” in their official capacity as a university employee.
Earlier this month, the UNC-Chapel Hill board of trustees <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/unc-chapel-hill-votes-to-gut-dei-department-give-money-to-campus-police" target="_blank" rel="noopener">voted</a> to gut funding for the school’s DEI department and give the money to campus police instead.
“I think that DEI in a lot of people’s minds is divisiveness, exclusion and indoctrination,” said UNC-Chapel Hill budget committee vice chairman Marty Kotis. “We need more unity and togetherness, more dialogue, more diversity of thought.”
Republican-led states across the country have moved to block public universities from implementing DEI policies that value identity over merit.

There are two visions of Western society that are currently on the table.
Vision one: Merit wins. Being good at things actually matters. 
This vision of society has excellent, positive externalities, because when you are good at things, you end up helping other people. You end up producing goods, products and services that are useful to others.
The meritocracy is the only system ever devised by man that actually creates positive effects for everyone else in a society.
That is vision number one.
Vision number two is the oversensitive Army of Losers society. Merit is discarded in favor of your level of being offended. The more of a failure you are, the more you get to be offended, and the more offended you are, the worse society is.
That’s because if the people who are unsuccessful get to run all of the levers of society, and part of what they get to do is declare that their un-success is a facet of their victimhood, that means negative externalities for everyone, because it&#8217;s literally the reverse of merit. It is failure of merit. It is lack of merit that now puts you high on the totem pole when it comes to this version of society.
This is the sort of conflict that is bubbling to the surface across Western civilization.
We&#8217;re going to have to choose which vision of society we wish to live in — the meritocracy or the Army of Losers society.
With regard to the meritocracy, the backlash has now begun against the Army of Losers society.
In excellent news, WRAL News <a href="https://www.wral.com/story/unc-board-of-trustees-removes-dei-funding-from-budget/21428683/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>:

This is excellent. They are saying, “No longer are we going to craft all of our systems around the false, pernicious lie that all disparities are because of societal exploitation and discrimination. Instead, we&#8217;re going to do away with all of that, and we&#8217;re going to go straight back to the meritocracy. We&#8217;re not spending taxpayer money on it. We&#8217;re not spending tuition money on it. We&#8217;re done.”
That is the way that society needs to move if you wish to have a successful meritocracy, a successful society with excellent knock-on effects and an ability to build for the future.
WRAL added that one of the members of the Board of Trustees, David Boliek, said, “I think that DEI is divisive. I don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s productive. I don&#8217;t think it gives a return on investment to taxpayers and to the institution itself.&#8221; Boliek said that conversations about increased funding for public safety began after the on-campus shooting death of a professor at the beginning of the 2023-24 school year and were furthered by on-campus protests in support of Palestinians.
So they are moving all of their funding away from DEI and toward campus safety, which makes perfect sense.

And the professoriate is upset. One associate professor in the Department of Health Behavior and Chair of the Faculty at UNC-Chapel Hill said, “Frankly, I was stunned. I have heard from faculty who are very concerned, who are concerned because they see the value in what we’re doing to increase equity and inclusion on campus”
Who cares what the professoriate has to say, considering they are the beneficiaries of a system that is directly cutting against meritocracy? 
So path one for our societies is to stop this notion that freedom itself, freedom and economics, freedom and association, freedom of speech — that all of these things are tools of the powerful, designed in order to harm others, and that merit itself is somehow a bad thing and a demonstration of power dynamics in a Foucault deconstructionist way. 
Then there&#8217;s path number two, currently being presented by Disney, which has decided they&#8217;re going to ax Tinker Bell from doing meet and greets at the park.
This story doesn&#8217;t seem particularly big on the surface except that the way that you educate your children matters an awful lot. The way that you deal with things like children&#8217;s entertainment matters because kids are incredibly impressionable, their brains are incredibly malleable and plastic.
And when you teach them that Tinker Bell cannot be allowed in public view because Tinker Bell represents some sort of exploitative vision of women, you&#8217;re creating a society of victims.
The predicate for this was something called the Stories Matter initiative over at Disney, which decided that Ursula the villainous sea witch from “The Little Mermaid” (who’s an octopus) was, because of her dark color palette, lavender skin and black legs, offensive in some sort of racial way.
Tinker Bell was also marked for caution. Why? Because she was “Body conscious and jealous of Peter Pan&#8217;s attention.”
Yes, that&#8217;s right: Tinker Bell is body-conscious and therefore she is no longer going to be included in the character meet and greets at Disney World.
Now let&#8217;s be real about the character of Tinker Bell. Obviously, Tinker Bell is in pretty good shape in the movie. The whole joke is that she is a pretty small person who&#8217;s in love with Peter. That&#8217;s the whole joke of the film. That is part of the relationship between them, which dates back to the original book by J.M. Barrie, but that can&#8217;t be included because it might give bad messages to little girls such as “being body-conscious actually matters with regard to mating.”
Or it might give off the impression that sometimes girls get jealous over guys, which you can&#8217;t have, because obviously it&#8217;s true.
These minor symptoms are indicative of broader cultural trends. And those broader cultural trends have an impact on politics because when you have the Army of Losers mentality versus the meritocracy, eventually the meritocracy is going to stand up and roar, because it turns out that the meritocracy is responsible for the success and health of any vital society.
The meritocracy is created by and benefits the lions of society, the strongest people when it comes to any merit-based activity. Those are the people who are the drivers of growth. They&#8217;re the people who are responsible for the tax revenue. They&#8217;re responsible for all the businesses being founded. They&#8217;re responsible for success in innovation.
The Army of Losers, by contrast, is a group of people who literally have taken themselves out of circulation because they were not meritorious enough.
Joe Biden has decided that he&#8217;s going to focus all of his attention on the supposed Army of Losers, and it is a disaster area for him. The only throughline to his administration is what he said it was: equity. Equity is the lie that all disparities are equivalent to discrimination, and therefore, if you can identify a group disparity in any practice across the United States, that means that some sort of exploitation or discrimination is happening that is correctable by government.
I don&#8217;t actually know if Joe Biden believes all of that. I think that Joe Biden is basically just a pinwheel of a human being who moves in whatever direction he thinks the winds are moving inside of his own party.
And the direction inside the Democratic Party is toward the anti-meritocracy.
And guess what? Most Americans like the meritocracy. Moderates, independents, even some moderate-leaning Democrats. It turns out that we like systems where effort is rewarded, where merit is rewarded, where innovation gets better because merit is rewarded, because the incentive structure is properly aligned for growth and health.
And this is why Joe Biden is collapsing in the polls.

The University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill&#8217;s board of trustees has voted to gut funding for the school&#8217;s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) department and give the money to campus police instead.
UNC Chapel Hill’s board <a href="https://www.wunc.org/education/2024-05-13/dei-unc-chapel-hill-trustees-vote-redirect-funding-police">voted</a> unanimously to redirect $2.3 million in diversity funding toward campus safety and police at a special meeting on Monday to address the university&#8217;s budget.
The move could essentially eliminate the school&#8217;s diversity office.
The beefed up funding for campus police comes in the wake of weeks of anti-Israel demonstrations on campus, which have <a href="https://alumni.unc.edu/news/students-others-arrested-during-pro-palestinian-demonstration/">resulted</a> in several arrests.
The school&#8217;s budget committee introduced the amendment to cut the diversity budget.

Anti-Israel protests have roiled UNC Chapel Hill&#8217;s campus for weeks. Last month, police detained more than 30 people at a pro-Palestinian encampment where protesters took down the American flag and replaced it with a Palestinian flag.
“When you destroy property or you take down the U.S flag and you have to put up gates around it — that costs money,” Kotis, the budget committee vice chairman <a href="https://www.wfae.org/race-equity/2024-05-13/dei-unc-chapel-hill-trustees-vote-redirect-funding-police">said</a>. “It’s imperative that we have the proper resources for law enforcement to protect the campus.”
Dozens of protesters have been arrested across multiple campuses, including at Northeastern University in Boston, Emerson College in Boston, Emory University in Atlanta, Virginia Tech University, University of Texas at Austin, and University of Mary Washington in Virginia.
UNC Chapel Hill is the flagship school of North Carolina&#8217;s public university system, which is currently approaching a broader vote next week to replace its diversity policy. The move would reverse a 2019 DEI regulation for the university system&#8217;s 17 schools and likely eliminate a number of DEI jobs at those schools.
If approved, the school system&#8217;s new policy <a href="https://abc11.com/post/dei-funding-unc-board-of-trustees-diversity-program-diverts-money-to-public-safety/14808731/">would</a> take effect immediately.
In June, the Supreme Court ruled against the University of North Carolina’s and Harvard&#8217;s affirmative action policies in a decision that has had a profound effect on the admissions processes at schools across the country.

The father of a University of North Carolina (UNC) student spoke out on Wednesday after his son — assisted by other members of his fraternity — defended the American flag amid anti-Israel and pro-Palestinian protests across the campus.
Jeff Goldklang shared his thoughts in a post on X after photos and videos of the fraternity brothers — who sang the national anthem as protesters insulted and threw things at them — in a post to X.
&#8220;Our son&#8217;s fraternity is going viral for holding an American flag off of the ground, respecting all that it has stood for. 99.9% of the positive response has been GOP or right of center,&#8221; Goldklang observed, asking why Democrats did not seem to share the same sentiments. &#8220;Has it become bad politics for Democrats to respect our flag? I feel it has, which is brutal.&#8221;

Goldklang went on to say that he did not want to see the fraternity brothers — who had simply acted in the moment out of their respect for their country and its flag — used for political reasons.

Daily Wire host <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/author/andrew-klavan" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Andrew Klavan</a> spoke to a crowd of students at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill on Wednesday, saying that American society’s embrace of transgenderism was teaching people to “live a lie.”
Klavan, who was brought to campus by the Young America’s Foundation, spoke to the college students about modern culture’s conception of the self in a speech entitled, “Sex, God, and Liberty.” During a Q&amp;A session after the speech, Klavan was asked to expound on his thoughts on transgenderism and why so many young people were starting to identify as transgender.
Klavan, host of “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/show/the-andrew-klavan-show" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Andrew Klavan Show</a>,” said that he believed that transgenderism denied reality and that people needed to push back acceptance of it in a “loving way.”
“We’re teaching people to live a lie, we’re teaching people that if they can just bully everybody into believing the lie it will somehow magically become true, and that has its roots in postmodern theory where language creates reality, which it just doesn’t. Language describes reality,” Klavan said. &#8220;All of these things to me are tremendously damaging and are going to get worse until people start pushing back against it in a loving way.&#8221;
The bestselling author said that some young people were being pushed to embrace transgenderism because they believed that all men and all women needed to be exactly the same. He said that this belief was leading them to adopt an identity he said would be harmful to them.
“I know people, young people who are having this problem and it breaks my heart because I think that moving into an area of falsehood is going to make them miserable in the long run,”  Klavan said.

Earlier in his speech, Klavan talked about the push for people to accept the phrase “trans women are women,” a slogan frequently posted across X. Klavan said the problem with the statement was that it was “not true” and it would lead to people living unhappy lives. 
He added that transgender ideology seemed to specifically target women because of the modern disdain for true femininity. 
“I can tell you from a lifetime of experience that if you live by things that are untrue you will be miserable,” Klavan said. “It’s just not a true statement. Words have meanings and the meanings of those words don’t make any sense. You can change, declare the meaning, but we all know what a woman is.”

Andrew Klavan Urges Americans To Push Back On Transgenderism Because It’s Teaching People To ‘Live A Lie’

A University of North Carolina researcher was fired after three women made vague, non-sexual allegations against him — he&#8217;s <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1LlHj13ag8ygtapJabsjoZX88PRneNTeO/view" target="_blank" rel="noopener">now suing</a>, alleging that the university violated its own policies when firing him and provided him little to no chance to defend himself.
Christopher Wretman received his undergraduate, master&#8217;s, and doctorate from UNC and was hired as a senior data analyst for the university in 2017. His main job was research, but he also taught as an adjunct faculty member at the university’s School of Social Work. His work focused on the disadvantages of the young and old, and economic and social inequities.
While obtaining his doctorate, Wretman says he fell in love with faculty member Dr. Rebecca Macy, and the two have owned a home together since 2020. The school approved their relationship, and the two worked on research projects together once Wretman was hired by the university, his lawsuit says.
In 2020, Wretman, Macy, and others were working on a plan to develop a research center, and the university hired Jia Luo as a research program manager to work under Macy. This team also collaborated with other faculty and students at UNC, including doctoral student Sarah Godoy and former student Erin Meehan.
During the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement that year, the School of Social Work adopted policies to root out alleged inequalities, leading to what Wretman described as a “call-out-culture” advocating for the community to report any suspected discrimination. This, combined with universities already existing Title IX policies regarding sex discrimination, created a system where people could accuse others of indiscretion without having to provide evidence to back up their claims, almost always leading to punishment of the accused.
According to the court filing, in April 2021, Godoy, the doctoral student who occasionally worked with Wretman and Macy, told UNC’s associate dean for doctoral education that she had concerns about the way her superiors communicated with her, in particular, Wretman. The dean reported these concerns to the school’s Title IX office, but Wretman does not know the actual content of the allegations or how the report was handled.
In early May 2021, Wretman and Macy were first alerted to these concerns when they were invited to a meeting with the school’s Title IX director of compliance. In Wretman’s lawsuit, he says contemporaneous emails show his and Macy’s “communications and interactions with Godoy had been constructive and positive throughout their work together.”
When Wretman inquired about the nature of this meeting, he was told that if he refused to participate, the university would involve his superiors, pressuring him to attend.
In a separate meeting, Macy was told that Godoy was uncomfortable with the team’s close relationships and that she had claimed Wretman made inappropriate comments. Macy was told to restructure the research so that Godoy would no longer have to communicate with Wretman. Because of the information Macy was given, UNC violated its policy about keeping such matters private since the meetings concerned Wretman and not Macy. Conversely, Godoy’s allegations reportedly referred to the team’s communications, but Wretman, the only male on the team, was the university’s sole focus.
During his own meeting, Wretman was told he behaved poorly even though no investigation had been done and no evidence was presented to back up Godoy’s allegations. He says in his lawsuit that he was told “to comport himself more appropriately as a straight White male.” Other than that, he was told the issue was resolved.
Wretman and Macy then worked out a plan so that Godoy wouldn’t have to work with them but could keep her name on all research projects. Godoy indicated in an email that she agreed to this.
But later Godoy apparently had dinner with Luo, who had been hired as the team’s program manager. During this dinner, Wretman alleges that Godoy claimed she was removed from the research team as if it was against her will and not something she agreed to. After this dinner, even though she had never raised any concerns about the team before, Luo claimed to Macy that she had experienced anti-Asian hate while working with the team. She placed the blame on Wretman’s communication style, according to his lawsuit.
Luo also claimed that others had concerns about Wretman without offering details.
It was Macy who reported Luo’s concerns about herself, Wretman, and the rest of the team to the university.
According to the lawsuit, Macy told Wretman about all of this and suggested he step back from work activities to protect himself.
Luo also reached out to Macy requesting to work remotely for fear that Wretman would retaliate against her, providing no evidence that he would do so. She also claimed to be stressed due to trauma stemming from this alleged &#8220;anti-Asian violence.&#8221;
Several months later, a third allegation was made, this time by Meehan, the former student who collaborated with the research team. Macy was Meehan’s internship supervisor, and never raised any concerns with Macy about anyone on the team. Wretman says in his lawsuit that emails show his communications with Meehan were “constructive and positive throughout their work together.”
Wretman had provided a reference for Meehan to work at a non-profit organization after her internship ended, but after Luo made her allegations, he emailed Meehan rescinding his offer to help her get this new job. Wretman’s reason for doing so was that he was afraid of more allegations when trying to help female researchers.
Meehan would later make a report against Wretman to the university, but it is unknown what allegations she made.
Even though the allegations seem vague and thin on evidence, the school investigated the claims against Wretman and determined he was responsible and should be terminated. To get to that conclusion, Wretman says in his lawsuit that the school ignored its own policies, never informing him about the process, breaking deadlines, and allowing his accusers to discuss matters with other people. Further, the vague nature of Luo’s allegations shouldn’t have amounted to an abusive or hostile workplace (she alleged he was overly critical of her work and her in meetings and was passive-aggressive and condescending, though she apparently provided no evidence, according to Wretman).

The school also decided to investigate Wretman for bullying based on Luo’s allegations and allowed her feelings to dictate Wretman’s guilt. The school, according to Wretman, provided no evidence that he had been vindictive or intended to intimidate or humiliate Luo.
While much of the information in Wretman’s lawsuit came from the school’s report on its investigation into him, he writes that the report lacks substantial information about how it justified its investigations and the evidence provided by the three women. The document, according to Wretman, provides “no documentation or information detailing a rationale that Meehan provided sufficient allegations or evidence of a University policy violation to warrant an investigation of Wretman.” He writes something similar about the allegations of the other two women.
Wretman alleges the school violated its Title IX policies and denied him due process, among other claims. He is seeking more than $50,000 in damages.

A University of North Carolina Chapel Hill physics professor who was found dead in his office in August had been shot seven times, a medical examiner said.
Zijie Yan, an associate professor in the Department of Applied Physical Sciences at the College of Arts and Sciences, had gunshot wounds to his head, face, neck, left arm, chest, and abdomen, as well as graze wounds to his right upper arm, left hand, and left forearm, ABC News <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/unc-chapel-hill-professor-killed-office-shot-7/story?id=103780698" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
Police were called to the scene on the afternoon of August 28, just one week into the fall semester, after someone called 911 to report gunshots at Caudill Labs. The caller also identified the alleged shooter, 34-year-old Tailei Qi, a graduate student. Yan was listed as Qi’s academic adviser.
Campus police quickly placed the school on lockdown as they conducted a brief search for Qi. He was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and misdemeanor possession of a gun on an education property. It is unknown why Qi allegedly shot Yan.
The gun used in the shooting has not been found.
An investigation report obtained by ABC showed mixed entry and exit wounds in Yan’s right hand, right bicep, left forearm, right neck area, with additional wounds to his face and forehead.
On September 19, Qi’s attorneys requested that he receive a competency evaluation. Qi responded by requesting new representation, ABC 11 <a href="https://abc11.com/unc-shooting-murder-tailei-qi-zijie-yan/13800127/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. The judge overseeing the case told Qi at the hearing that he should follow the advice of his attorneys.
&#8220;I don&#8217;t want you to say anything else today. What I want you to know, is that you have two lawyers beside you who are willing to work for you and with you, and what they need from you is your cooperation and your help. Things will not go at the speed you want them to. Our court system does not work at any one person&#8217;s pace or interest,&#8221; the judge said.

Qi had repeatedly spoken up during the hearing.
Student newspaper The Daily Tar Heel <a href="https://www.dailytarheel.com/article/2023/09/university-zijie-yan-professor-news-obituary-caudill-laboratories-applied-physical-sciences" target="_blank" rel="noopener">published</a> statements from the campus community describing Yan as a “gentle” mentor and a good father.
&#8220;Because of how gentle he seemed, I could tell that he was probably a really good dad,&#8221; Bergen Murray, senior and member of Yan’s research group since she was a freshman, told the paper. She added that Yan was always “very, very patient” with her, even though she joined the group with little experience.
Monika Katarina, a postdoctoral research associate who also worked in Yan’s research group, told the outlet that the associate professor would sometimes bring his two young daughters to the lab, adding that his love for his daughters was obvious.
Yan was born in China and graduated from the Huazhong University of Science and Technology before he moved to the U.S. to pursue his Ph.D. from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 2011. He finished his doctoral studies at the University of Chicago in 2015 and became an assistant professor at Clarkson University before joining UNC in 2019, where he became tenured.

Columbia Law School removed a questionable admission requirement for transfer students on Monday after <a href="https://freebeacon.com/campus/columbia-law-school-said-it-would-require-applicants-to-submit-video-statements-in-the-wake-of-affirmative-action-ban-then-it-backtracked/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Washington Free Beacon</a> inquired that the application process appeared to have a portion used to bypass the U.S. Supreme Court ban on affirmative action.
Just before SCOTUS broke for recesses at the end of June, a landmark ruling from the court said race-based admissions programs at Harvard University violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the University of North Carolina programs violated the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment. The decision now profoundly affects the admissions processes at universities across the country.
But despite the nation&#8217;s highest court eliminating universities&#8217; ability to accept applicants based on race, some have <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/universities-react-to-scotus-affirmative-action-ruling-harvard-vows-to-find-loophole" target="_blank" rel="noopener">indicated</a> that they would search for a loophole in the ruling.
On Monday morning, Columbia Law School&#8217;s admissions page reportedly said all transfer applicants must submit a 90-second video statement addressing random questions &#8220;to provide the Admissions Committee with additional insight into their personal strengths,&#8221; according to the Free Beacon.
But the video statements from transfer applicants only appeared on the law school&#8217;s website after the Supreme Court ruled against affirmative action policies.
Columbia&#8217;s decision &#8220;has all the hallmarks of a willful effort to evade the requirements of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act,&#8221; Edward Blum, the founder of the nonprofit legal advocacy organization Students for Fair Admissions, told the Free Beacon. &#8220;What is a 90-second video supposed to legitimately convey that a written statement could not?&#8221;
Blum&#8217;s organization took the legal challenge to the nation&#8217;s highest court after accusing the so-called elite universities of unfairly factoring race into their admissions processes. The group pointed to the high test scores of rejected Asian American and white applicants. The Supreme Court ultimately ruled against Harvard and UNC.
Following the Free Beacon&#8217;s report, a law school spokesman claimed the application&#8217;s video statement component — which was first introduced before the Supreme Court ruling in a pilot program — had been a misunderstanding. By 6:00 p.m. on Monday, officials removed the portion from the school&#8217;s website.

&#8220;Video statements will not be required as part of the Fall 2024 J.D. application when it becomes available in September,&#8221; the law school told the Free Beacon in a statement. &#8220;It was inadvertently listed on the Law School&#8217;s website and has since been corrected.&#8221;
Campus Reform, a watchdog group, reported that some colleges have drummed up other ways to inquire about a students&#8217; race, including Sarah Lawrence College in New York, which asks applicants how the SCOTUS ruling has personally affected them, according to the <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/08/01/columbia-university-claims-video-requirement-on-application-was-an-accident/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New York Post</a>.

Harvard University said it would comply with the Supreme Court&#8217;s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/supreme-court-issues-landmark-ruling-on-affirmative-action-at-universities" target="_blank" rel="noopener">landmark ruling</a> that said its institution&#8217;s admissions system violated the Civil Rights Act — but indicated it would search for a loophole to accept applicants based on race.
The Supreme Court voted six to three against Harvard University and six to two against the University of North Carolina&#8217;s (UNC) affirmative action policies in a decision that will profoundly affect the admissions processes at universities across the country. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, a Harvard graduate, and former Harvard board member, recused herself from the Harvard case.
The Court ruled that the race-based admissions programs at Harvard violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the UNC programs violated the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment.
&#8220;The Court held that Harvard College&#8217;s admissions system does not comply with the principles of the equal protection clause embodied in Title VI of the Civil Rights Act,&#8221; Harvard University said in a <a href="https://www.harvard.edu/admissionscase/2023/06/29/supreme-court-decision/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">news release</a>. &#8220;The Court also ruled that colleges and universities may consider in admissions decisions &#8216;an applicant&#8217;s discussion of how race affected his or her life,&#8217; be it through discrimination, inspiration, or otherwise. We will certainly comply with the Court&#8217;s decision.&#8221;
The institution added, &#8220;We write today to reaffirm the fundamental principle that deep and transformative teaching, learning, and research depend upon a community comprising people of many backgrounds, perspectives, and lived experiences.
&#8220;That principle is as true and important today as it was yesterday. So too are the abiding values that have enabled us—and every great educational institution—to pursue the high calling of educating creative thinkers and bold leaders, of deepening human knowledge, and of promoting progress, justice, and human flourishing.&#8221;
A group called Students for Fair Admissions sued the elite schools, accusing them of unfairly factoring race into their admissions processes. The group pointed to the high test scores of rejected Asian-American and white applicants.
Students for Fair Admissions argued that Harvard violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, which prohibits racial discrimination by schools that receive federal funding. In the other case, the group accused the UNC of violating the 14th Amendment&#8217;s equal protection clause by considering race in its admissions process.
UNC&#8217;s Chancellor Kevin M. Guskiewicz <a href="https://abc11.com/unc-admissions-supreme-court-affirmative-action-ruling-scotus/13440517/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> while the institution disapproves of the SCOTUS decision, it would &#8220;carefully review the Supreme Court&#8217;s decision and take any steps necessary to comply with the law.&#8221;
