In a jaw-dropping courtroom confession, Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty Friday to federal stalking charges carrying a potential life sentence in connection with the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, a move that could have major implications for his upcoming New York murder trial.
&#8220;After years of enduring severe pain in my back and seeing others too, I learned UnitedHealth would hold its conference,” Mangione said in a New York City courtroom. “I researched the event online. I observed the conference of the largest health care company would be attended by executives, not doctors, nurses or patients. I traveled to Manhattan and emailed leadership posing as an investor managing $58 billion.”
&#8220;Before traveling to New York, I used a 3-D printer to make a gun. I traveled to New York with the intent to shoot Brian Thompson. On the morning of December 4, 2024, I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan. … I knew what I was doing,&#8221; he added.
The guilty plea marks a dramatic turnaround for the 28-year-old, who has long maintained his innocence and is now pursuing a legal theory that could potentially derail his separate, high-stakes murder trial set to begin September 8 in New York state court.
&#8220;Mr. Mangione is prepared to plead guilty to the indictment at this time,&#8221; Mangione&#8217;s attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo told the judge. Mangione then confirmed that he is pleading guilty to the stalking charges.
Brian Thompson’s family called the plea “an important step towards justice” for the father who left behind a wife and two children.  
“While nothing will ease the pain of losing him, we are grateful that the federal justice system has held the person responsible for this heinous act accountable,” the family said in a statement. “Now we look to the court to ensure that sentencing reflects the severity of this crime. We remain mindful that additional proceedings in New York and Pennsylvania are still to come, and we will continue to seek the justice Brian deserves.&#8221;
Mangione has never apologized for the killing or expressed remorse.
Ahead of Friday’s hearing, the DOJ was unsure whether Mangione would plead guilty but was prepared to seek a life sentence if he did, a source familiar with the matter told The Daily Wire.
In his federal case, the Maryland native faced one count of interstate stalking resulting in death and one count of stalking through the use of interstate facilities resulting in death. Both charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison, <a href="https://www.justice.gov/archives/opa/pr/luigi-mangione-charged-stalking-and-murder-unitedhealthcare-ceo-brian-thompson-and-use">according to the Department of Justice.</a> A judge tossed out a firearms charge that would’ve made Mangione eligible for the federal death penalty. The federal trial was scheduled to begin on January 5, 2027.
“Mangione planned his attack for months and stalked his victim for days before murdering him — methodically planning when, where, and how to carry out his crime,” then-Attorney General Merrick B. Garland said at the time.
In state court, Mangione faces eight charges, including second-degree murder, which carries a maximum sentence of 25 years to life. Following his guilty plea in federal court, his lawyers may argue that New York’s double-jeopardy protections prevent state prosecutors from trying him for murder because the state charges stem from the same criminal act as the federal case.  
The Constitution generally protects defendants from being prosecuted twice for the same offense. Still, Mangione’s state and federal cases fall under the “separate sovereigns” exception to double jeopardy, <a href="https://abcnews.com/US/luigi-mangione-federal-guilty-plea-expected-announced-friday/story?id=135608406">according to ABC News.</a> Under the doctrine, the federal government and New York are considered separate sovereigns, allowing both to prosecute the same defendant for the same conduct under their respective laws.
“If a plea in the Federal case against Luigi Mangione is indeed being announced tomorrow, it sure seems the timing is intended to block the State trial,” Rich Schoenstein, a trial lawyer, <a href="https://x.com/LawfulRiches/status/2087899313259069841?s=20">said</a> on X. “Whether that succeeds remains to be seen.” 
“The State is a separate sovereign, and the charges are arguably quite different. If New York wants the trial to go forward anyway, it has an argument, and the issue will be hotly contested,” he added. 
The legal drama comes days after <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/luigi-mangione-trial-gets-anonymous-jury-over-fears-of-intimidation">The Daily Wire</a> reported that the high-profile murder case will proceed with an anonymous jury and expanded courtroom access after a judge finalized several key details ahead of the September proceedings.
Thompson was gunned down in Midtown Manhattan on December 4, 2024, leading to a five-day manhunt that ended with Mangione’s arrest in rural Pennsylvania, more than 270 miles from the shooting scene.
At the time of his arrest, Mangione possessed “fake ID used by the suspect, the gun they believe was used in the shooting and a handwritten ‘claim of responsibility,’ authorities have said,” <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/luigi-mangione-pleads-not-guilty-as-doj-seeks-death-penalty?author=Nathan+Gay&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=undefined&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=Luigi+Mangione+Pleads+Not+Guilty+As+DOJ+Seeks+Death+Penalty">The Daily Wire</a> previously reported. 
Mangione’s targeting of Thompson appears meticulously planned, according to the DOJ, and three 9mm shell casings recovered from the crime scene had the words “delay,” “deny,” and “depose” written on them, an apparent reference to a 2010 book criticizing insurance industry tactics, according to the NYPD.
The case has drawn widespread public attention, with supporters of Mangione continuing to gather outside the New York City courthouse nearly two years later to rally behind the accused assassin.
“I support Luigi whether or not he did it. So for me, I always knew this could be on the table. So I wouldn&#8217;t really be phased by one,” a white woman supporting Mangione <a href="https://x.com/nypost/status/2088268716186169596?s=20">said</a> Friday of a possible plea. “This is about a movement. It is about Luigi, but it&#8217;s also about the conversation he started.”

Luigi Mangione’s high-profile murder trial will proceed with an anonymous jury and expanded courtroom access after a judge finalized several key details Tuesday ahead of the September trial.
Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Gregory Carro ruled that the identities of jurors will be kept from the public during the trial, which is scheduled to begin September 8 and is expected to last roughly six weeks. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/luigi-mangione">Mangione</a>, 28, has pleaded not guilty to eight state charges, including second-degree murder, in the December 4, 2024, shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel. He faces up to life in prison if convicted.
The anonymous jury comes as prosecutors warn that Mangione’s sizable and highly vocal supporter base could pressure witnesses and potential jurors. “The media attention surrounding this case — and the efforts of some of the defendant’s supporters both to intimidate witnesses and to interfere with the functioning of the jury — will place extraordinary pressure on witnesses and potential jurors alike,” Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Joel Seidemann wrote in a Monday letter to Carro obtained by <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/prosecutors-warn-luigi-mangione-supporters-may-intimidate-witnesses-jurors-murder-trial">Fox News</a>.
Prosecutors had asked the court to limit access to the proceedings and raised concerns that supporters could secretly record proceedings in an overflow room and distribute the footage. Carro nevertheless ordered that an overflow room be made available for members of the media and the public, after Mangione’s attorneys argued that limiting courtroom access would unfairly restrict coverage of the case.
The judge also warned that anyone who takes out a cellphone in either the courtroom or the overflow room will be removed. The decision represents a compromise between the defense’s desire for broad public access and prosecutors’ concerns about security and witness intimidation.
The defense previously requested that the trial be televised, although New York law generally does not permit cameras in the courtroom. Jury selection will also begin September 8, with Carro ordering the prosecution and defense to work together on a questionnaire designed to identify potential jurors who may have biases that could affect their ability to serve.
That process is expected to be particularly contentious given the circumstances surrounding Thompson’s killing and the public reaction to Mangione.
Prosecutors allege Mangione targeted Thompson because of his animus toward the health insurance industry. They say he tracked Thompson’s movements before he allegedly shot him from behind as the executive walked toward the New York Hilton Midtown, where UnitedHealthcare was holding an investor conference. Mangione was arrested days later at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after an employee alerted police.
Mangione’s defense briefly announced in June that it <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/the-defense-strategy-luigi-mangione-is-betting-everything-on">planned</a> to pursue a psychiatric defense before <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/luigi-mangione-defense-abandons-controversial-courtroom-tactic">withdrawing</a> that strategy a day later. About a mile and a half from where Luigi Mangione (allegedly) murdered UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, and a schlep from the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn where the (alleged) assassin is being held as he awaits state and federal trials, Luigi: The Musical finished its six-night New York City run at The Green Room 42 in the YOTEL New York Times Square.
I would have skipped Luigi — I’d prefer a revival of Stephen Sondheim’s <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vS2a6XwpVHc">Assassins</a> instead — but when the likes of <a href="https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1127991796010441">Bill Maher</a> and <a href="https://youtu.be/KW1FdPok54k?si=WZRIn-YZlGkZP2jW">Stephen Colbert</a> start promoting a show that mentions “MILFs and Bottoms for Luigi,” I figure I should go.
My plan was to interview audience members about the increasing tide of <a href="https://www.piratewires.com/p/assassination-culture">political violence</a> in America — I imagined they’d have revealing opinions to share, given that they’d taken time out of their summers to see a show that, according to its press release, “doesn’t glorify violence, it interrogates it.”
Personally, I can’t think of a more appropriate time to “interrogate” violence — since the murder of Charlie Kirk, we’ve seen assassination attempts on Sam Altman, multiple “security incidents” involving President Trump (both foreign and domestic), and <a href="https://www.popehat.com/p/a-bit-of-tedious-drama-at-bluesky">Bluesky musings</a> about a world without Elon Musk.
But what I found at the Luigi musical was less “interrogation” and more… applause.
I missed opening night, but the night I went was sold out. The audience looked like your regular mix of off-Broadway theater fans. (Translation: I’ll bet I was the only one who hadn’t seen Heated Rivalry.)
Although the title of the show is Luigi: The Musical, the title character shares the stage with two other high-profile convicts — Sean “Diddy” Combs and Sam Bankman-Fried — who were held in the same unit as Luigi for three months. Thus the inspiration for Luigi creator Nova Bradford (who, by day, works as a “health systems researcher” at Stanford). She wondered: what if the respective assassin, crypto fraudster, and hip-hop mogul / <a href="https://www.eonline.com/news/1417438/sean-diddy-combs-trial-defense-attorney-addresses-baby-oil">baby oil aficionado</a> hung out behind bars? (And of course, <a href="https://www.sharkpartymedia.com/luigi">make it “queer”</a>: Sam’s played by a they/he; Diddy’s a blacktress in a doo-rag.)
Before the show, I chatted up a bloke from New Zealand who’d had trouble getting rid of an extra ticket. His friends had declined because the show seemed like it was “glamorizing a guy who committed murder in cold blood.”
“That’s not a great thing,” he agreed, but he was “very interested to see how tastefully it’s done.”
“The whole topic was so absurd that I just had to go,” an elderly woman told me. Her friend had brought her along. “I’ve been following the story [of Brian Thompson’s murder]. I’ve been finding it so intriguing,” she said. “I have mixed feelings about it. I think to kill anybody is unfair, but I understand the medical industry is so terrible and getting worse.”
This is the moral quandary I was expecting to hear. After Thompson’s murder, I heard it everywhere. I can’t count the number of politicians who took to social media and the press with some version of Chris Rock’s bit, “<a href="https://youtu.be/L4LlJNGRIoc?si=l2l6itFheWOy7Kve">O.J., I Understand</a>.” Senator Elizabeth Warren said, “Violence is never the answer, but people can be pushed only so far.” (She walked back that statement, but we understood what she was getting at.) Senator Bernie Sanders called the murder <a href="https://www.huffpost.com/entry/warren-sanders-brian-thompson-health-care_n_6758bc0fe4b063b52a9a524b">“outrageous” and “unacceptable”</a> with the caveat that he understood it, too. “This is not to say that an act of violence is justified,” Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez <a href="https://x.com/alanhe/status/1867274875859349565?s=20">said on the steps of the Capitol</a>, “but I think for anyone who is confused or shocked or appalled, they need to understand that people interpret and feel and experience denied claims as an act of violence against them.”
Politicians were willing to show a nuanced understanding of an act of murder, but none were willing to take responsibility for the policies that had helped create this “violent” healthcare industry in the first place. Remember: Bernie Sanders voted “yes” to the Affordable Care Act, which accelerated corporate consolidation in healthcare (after it passed, independent doctors merged with hospitals so they could afford to keep up with ACA’s reporting requirements). I totally understand, though: Bernie and AOC would rather a target be on every healthcare CEO’s back than on their own.
However, healthcare policy wasn’t really top of mind that night.
Most people were just saying Luigi is hot.
“I’m not going to say I’m one of those fanatics standing in line at dawn to get in [the courthouse],” the elderly woman assures me. “I know there are a lot of young women who are crazy about him. [Luigi’s] very good-looking.”
(Obviously, it’s just not the same when an uggo pops someone important. Charlie Kirk’s assassin was so ugly everyone preferred to invent conspiracy theories about Israel instead of facing the real killer… and remember John Hinckley Jr., who tried to assassinate Ronald Reagan to get Jodie Foster to fall in love with him? It didn’t work, because he wasn’t attractive and Jodie Foster’s gay.)
Speaking of “young women who are crazy about him,” I scoped out the cabaret in search of Luigi groupies who do stand in line at dawn to get into the courthouse — and spotted a familiar brunette with goth bangs. I recognized her from a <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/05/18/us-news/luigi-mangione-reporters-unapologetically-celebrate-ceos-assassination-fk-brian-thompson/">piece</a> in the New York Post about a trio of Luigi fangirls who’d named themselves “Mangionistas.” They’d camped out at the courthouse before pre-trial hearings and eventually earned <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/05/18/us-news/luigi-mangione-bloodthirsty-superfans-nyc-issued-press-passes-draw-outrage-theyre-not-reporters-theyre-ghouls/">press passes</a>. One of them, Lena Weissbrot, called Thompson a “terrorist” whose crimes rivaled Osama bin Laden’s, and said his “children are better off without him.”
And there she was, at the show. I said hi.
“Because I’m so invested in the case,” Lena told me. “I guess I was just curious to see how much research [went into this play] — how much it matches my conception of Luigi based on examining his digital footprint and following the case. Or if it’s just going to be like, a joke thing.”
While most of the theatergoers I met waffled over the moral implications of political violence, Lena was direct. “On December 4th,” she said, “seeing the video camera [footage] of the shooting, it kind of brought me out of despair, because I’d been pretty upset about the health insurance industry… So I viewed it as a heroic act.”
I asked if Luigi pleading not guilty takes away from his “heroism.”
“It’d be way cooler if he got away with it,” she said. “It would be pretty empowering to find out that under the age of mass surveillance, you can still get away with something.”
Well, if the show is any indication, the only way Luigi gets away with it is via jailbreak.
During the show, after Luigi announced that he was being held against his will for the alleged murder of a CEO, the audience erupted in applause. Luigi then lamented ordering hash browns at McDonald’s — a reference to his <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/12/10/us-news/luigi-mangione-caught-scarfing-down-hash-brown-at-mcdonalds-before-arrest-for-unitedhealthcare-ceo-brian-thompsons-assassination/">capture</a> — but the joke was overshadowed by a song: “Deny, Delay, Defend” (a reference to engravings found on bullet casings at the scene).
Later, while incarcerated, Luigi read letters from victims denied care and thrust into medical bankruptcy. The letters were presumably fictional, but lacked irony or humor — aside from one package he received containing panties. Even the prison guard in the show had cancer and sang about being denied treatment! This was all before said guard handed Luigi his gun and helped him escape!
“Now get out there and do the Lord’s work,” the guard commanded Mr. Mangione.
After the show, I ended up in the YOTEL lobby talking with two poli-sci students from NYU: one of them was white and wearing a dress with butterfly print, the other Latina.
“A lot of [the fixation on Luigi] has to do with his whiteness,” the white student told me. “I feel like he’d be covered very differently if he wasn’t objectively attractive.”
“And also a person of color,” the Latina student said, “or low-income.”
The white student agreed. “He’s a hot, rich boy with great cheekbones,” she said. “And I think there’s a kind of romance to that.”
“I’m not pro political violence,” she continued — though “I think honestly for [violence] to be effective, it has to target an executive.” She then introduced me to the anarchist concept of “propaganda by the deed,” wherein a dramatic violent act communicates a political message more powerfully than a speech or Bluseky post.
Later, I caught up with Lena. She was enjoying a cocktail with a blonde from Australia who was writing a book about Luigi.
Lena’s now bicoastal for Luigi, she explained to me, splitting time between LA (where she lives) and NYC. And she liked the show. “I like that they portrayed him as a hero,” she said. “In the first song, he referred to himself as a martyr. And I think that’s how most Americans view him.”
I asked her about politicians who’ve passed healthcare policy. Should they be scared of the mob, too? Or are we only targeting CEOs?
“Whoever did this,” Lena responded — a coy reference to Luigi’s “not guilty” plea — “sacrificed their life to give us leverage. I hope this does become a reckoning that leads to us getting healthcare. The people in power need to be scared. And they’re not going to respond to anything else. They need to know that we’re angry — and that it’s not even a radical opinion. I can talk about this shit casually at work.”
Plus, he’s hot. “Having seen Luigi in person,” Lena told me, “Luigi’s kind of the most beautiful person I’ve ever seen in my life.” The actor who played him, Mike Cefalo, was “close enough,” she explained — the hair was “spot on,” though, she admits, he could have had a “stronger jaw.”
And that’s why, be it musical theater or assassination theater, it all comes down to casting.

The Daily Wire can confirm that Alison King, a social media manager at the health insurance giant, was fired shortly after the company became aware of a social media video in which she mocks Saturday night&#8217;s attack on the president at the White House Correspondents&#8217; Dinner in Washington, D.C.

The CEO of Five Guys joked that his motivation behind handing out $1.5 million in employee bonuses was a fear of being murdered.
The restaurant exec Jerry Murrell seemed to be making a dark reference to the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December 2024. 
“I didn’t want anybody shooting me in the back or anything after the first day, because we really screwed it up. We had no idea that we were going to get that kind of response,” Murrell, 82, <a href="https://fortune.com/2026/03/25/five-guys-ceo-jerry-murrell-bonus-employees-bogo-burger/">told</a> Fortune of their failed buy-one-get-one promotion that made headlines earlier this year.
In February, Five Guys celebrated its 40-year anniversary with a BOGO promo, which proved so popular that it crashed the app and led to many restaurants shutting their doors early and refusing to honor it. This led to massive backlash on social media. 
The company apologized for the chaos with a <a href="https://www.fiveguys.com/news/blog/were-sorry/">statement</a> posted on its website. “We let you down, and we’re sorry,” it said. “The promotion spread far beyond what we anticipated, and our hardworking crews were placed in a difficult situation. Some locations ran out of product and had to close early. Online and app ordering experienced sporadic issues that prevented some of you from redeeming the offer.”
The apology went on to praise employees, saying this wasn’t their fault. “We also want to recognize the incredible men and women working in our restaurants. While yesterday’s issues were through no fault of their own, they handled it with the same grit and dedication that has defined Five Guys for four decades.”
Five Guys ran the promo again the following month with better preparation for how popular it would be. Murrell, founder of the popular burger joint, said he used his own money to pay out the bonuses.
“I was gonna buy my wife a new fur coat, and I spent it on [the bonus] instead,” Murrell told the outlet. “She still looks at me like I’m stupid. But I thought it was worth it. They worked so hard. They were so overwhelmed.”​
The outlet noted that Five Guys is one of the last major fast-food chains that is still private and family-owned. There are approximately 1,500 locations nationwide, meaning each restaurant received about $1,000.

A man accused of murder is now the subject of a musical and the crowds can’t wait.
“Luigi: The Musical,” will debut in New York City this June, just blocks from the scene of United HealthCare CEO Brian Thompson’s murder. The show, first staged in San Francisco, transforms suspected assassin Luigi Mangione into a comic antihero. The New York premiere has sold out. Late-night audiences have cheered at the mention of his name.
Not long ago, political violence — even fictionalized — sparked bipartisan outrage. Today, it sells tickets. And the speed of that shift says more about us than it does about one off-Broadway production.

Pop culture has a way of giving us an eerie snapshot into America’s moral decline.
We could point to Bad Bunny’s over-sexualized Super Bowl halftime show, new media attempts to trans the kids, or Brittany’s new DUI. But also consider the outrage over the 2006 film “Death of a President,” the faux documentary featuring President George W. Bush’s assassination. The film released just as far-Left protesters labeled the president “Hitler” over his War on Terror tactics. The project even drew bipartisan fury from former First Lady Hillary Clinton, who dubbed the film “<a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20061023003633/http:/www.lohud.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=%2F20060916%2FUPDATE%2F609160394">despicable</a>.”
More than a decade later, the culture recoiled over an image of comedian Kathy Griffin holding the bloody head of President Donald Trump. Griffin’s comedy career collapsed overnight, and only in recent years has she returned to the quasi-mainstream. Griffin apologized, but quickly reversed course. Today, no such apology would be required.
Those moments, however, seem almost quaint compared to “Luigi: The Musical.”
The comedy enjoyed brisk sales during its short San Francisco debut last year. The show features Mangione sharing a jail cell with Sean “Diddy” Combs and crypto crook Sam Bankman-Fried.

The production will hit New York City’s Green Room 42 on June 15, 2026. That’s a short subway ride from the scene of Thompson’s cold-blooded murder.
Media reports have depicted “Luigi” in conflicting fashion. Some suggest the show doesn’t glamorize the alleged murderer. Others hint at the opposite, while crowds have been cheering his presence at various shows, <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/03/02/us-news/luigi-mangione-musical-set-to-premiere-on-nyc-stage/">according to The New York Post.</a>
Is it merely dark humor rushing to the surface? Or something more sinister squeezing into our conversations?
The minds behind the musical insist <a href="https://playbill.com/article/luigi-mangioni-musical-to-get-nyc-reading">they’re not advocating violence</a>.
&#8220;Luigi: the Musical uses comedy to bring deeper questions to the surface. Why did this case garner the reaction that it did? And what happens when people stop trusting their institutions?&#8221; Luigi director Nova Bradford said in a statement.
Yet even this kind of cringe theater shouldn’t come as a shock. Nor should the fact that the show <a href="https://www.nysun.com/article/luigi-mangione-musical-sells-out-its-new-york-performance-and-adds-extra-dates">swiftly sold out</a> and added additional dates for its Big Apple debut.
Shortly after the murder, the host of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” shared how some of his young female staffers had developed a crush on the alleged murderer and his washboard abs. Kimmel flashed screenshots of his <a href="https://www.tvinsider.com/1166115/jimmy-kimmel-luigi-mangione-hot-kiiller-monologue-video/">employees fan-girling over the suspect,</a>

“I’m not mad at him.”</blockquote>
Kimmel and the audience chortled over the revelations, although the host wisely blocked the names of the staffers in question. It still speaks volumes about the show and its fan base.

This wasn’t a “Gutfeld!” audience.
And it wasn’t the only comedy showcase lining up on Mangione’s side. “The Daily Show” host Jon Stewart informed his far-Left audience that the alleged killer had been collared by the cops.
The response? The “boos” <a href="https://www.thewrap.com/the-daily-show-unitedhealthcare-shooter-boos-jon-stewart/">rained down</a> on a clearly baffled Stewart. “Look, I’m sorry, guys,” Stewart stammered.
A similarly strange moment came courtesy of “Saturday Night Live.” The NBC show’s ‘Weekend Update’ segment found co-faux anchor Colin Jost dropping Mangione’s name. The comic had to pause the bit to be heard. His audience began clapping and shouting with excitement.
Jost, as stunned as Stewart, blurted out, “Yeah, definitely ‘woo … You’re ‘wooing’ for justice, right?&#8221;
Not even close. And it’s not an accident, either.

Late-night comedians have leaned into anger and violence for some time now, fueling our culture’s decay. Hosts like Seth Meyers and John Oliver <a href="https://www.hollywoodintoto.com/john-oliver-media-portland-violence/">downplayed</a> the violence raging in Portland, Oregon, during the George Floyd riots of 2020. Stephen Colbert uttered a sexually coarse <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HaHwlSTqA7s">gag aimed</a> at President Donald Trump during the Russian collusion hoax, but he never suffered for the outburst.
More recently, late-night comics chuckled over progressive activists attacking Tesla dealerships to protest owner Elon Musk’s White House maneuvers vis-à-vis DOGE.
Kimmel sarcastically told his crowd to stop the <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/03/19/opinion/democrats-silence-is-damning-as-leftist-violence-explodes/">Tesla-based</a> attacks.

Comedy remains subjective. Even the darkest subjects can make us howl or defang hate or bigotry. Just ask Mel “Springtime for Hitler” Brooks.
Consider “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7eoZt-bUSI&amp;t=152s">Too Soon: Comedy After 9/11</a>,” a sobering documentary about stand-ups who told jokes tied to the terrorist attack mere days after it happened. Comedy can help us process pain and adjust to startling new realities, or it can showcase just how far we’ve fallen as a society.
Context is everything. And it helps to remember an old saw: “Comedy is tragedy plus time.”
Mangione has yet to face a jury of his peers.
Watching patrons gleefully cheer on an alleged murderer is something radically different and frightening. The New York City debut of “Luigi: The Musical” will <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/newyork/news/luigi-mangione-musical-new-york-city-summer/">capture the zeitgeist, no doubt</a>.
Mangione’s real-life New York state trial is slated to begin on June 8, 2026, while his federal trial will have to wait until September.

The UnitedHealth Group revealed Thursday that it is cooperating with a federal investigation over alleged Medicare fraud allegations. This comes after a long string of setbacks to the multinational corporation, including the murder of the CEO of one of its subsidiaries.
In May, the Wall Street Journal <a href="https://www.wsj.com/us-news/unitedhealth-medicare-fraud-investigation-df80667f?mod=article_inline">reported</a> that UnitedHealth was reportedly under investigation by the Department of Justice (DOJ) for possible Medicare fraud since. According to the WSJ, the DOJ alleged that UnitedHealth was encouraging its practitioners and insurers to add extra payments onto patients&#8217; records in order to receive more payments from the federal government through Medicare Advantage programs.
UnitedHealth originally denied those claims, <a href="https://www.unitedhealthgroup.com/newsroom/2025/2025-05-14-response-may-14-wsj-article.html">saying</a> that &#8220;We have not been notified by the Department of Justice of the supposed criminal investigation reported,&#8221; and adding that the WSJ&#8217;s reporting was &#8220;deeply irresponsible.&#8221;
According to a new <a href="https://www.unitedhealthgroup.com/newsroom/2025/2025-07-24-uhg-responds-to-doj-investigation.html">press release</a>, UnitedHealth acknowledged being the subject of a federal investigation over a month after the WSJ&#8217;s report.
&#8220;The Company has now begun complying with formal criminal and civil requests from the Department,&#8221; the statement reads. &#8220;The Company has full confidence in its practices and is committed to working cooperatively with the Department throughout this process.&#8221;
This investigation into UnitedHealth&#8217;s practices is one in a long line of blows to confidence in the company. Most notably, in December 2024, Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealth&#8217;s insurance arm, was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/luigi-mangiones-chilling-diaries-revealed-in-court-parasites-simply-had-it-coming?author=Nathan+Gay&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=undefined&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=Luigi+Mangione%E2%80%99s+Chilling+Diaries+Revealed+In+Court%3A+%E2%80%98Parasites+Simply+Had+It+Coming%E2%80%99">gunned down</a> in New York City.
Luigi Mangione, the man arrested for Thompson&#8217;s murder, allegedly committed the murder for symbolic reasons — in order to affect change within the healthcare industry in America. A manifesto collected from his person revealed as much in June.
UnitedHealth is also facing a massive antitrust suit from around the time of Thompson&#8217;s murder over their planned merger with Amedisys, a hospice and home elderly care service. The DOJ is <a href="https://www.justice.gov/atr/case/us-and-plaintiff-states-v-unitedhealth-group-inc-and-amedisys-inc">suing</a> UnitedHealth in order to stop the merger between the two multi-billion dollar corporations.
In addition, UnitedHealth is currently under a different antitrust investigation for its coordination with Optum Health, the company&#8217;s employer of medical practitioners. The WSJ <a href="https://www.wsj.com/health/healthcare/unitedhealth-contacts-u-s-justice-amid-reports-of-medicare-billing-probe-8892033e?mod=hp_lead_pos2">reported</a> on an email from UnitedHealth to a former employee in March stating that &#8220;the government has asked us some questions regarding Optum&#8217;s coding practices.&#8221;
Since a massive <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/u-s-health-insurance-company-hit-with-cyberattack-from-suspected-nation-state-actor-crippling-pharmacies-ability-to-process-prescriptions">data breach</a> that affected a subsidiary of UnitedHealth early last year, on top of the murder of Thompson and these antitrust lawsuits, the company&#8217;s stock price has fallen significantly. UnitedHealth&#8217;s stock price has fallen by more than 3% following the recent news of cooperation with the federal government over Medicare fraud allegations.

Prosecutors say Luigi Mangione kept diaries chronicling in chilling detail his plans to assassinate UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson and revealing he backed off of a mass-casualty attack he had initially conceived.
The self-proclaimed anti-capitalist wrote in his manifesto that he chose to &#8220;wack the CEO&#8221; rather than bomb the UnitedHealthcare headquarters because he believed it would generate better headlines and be less likely to be deemed &#8220;terrorism,&#8221; according to court documents <a href="https://www.courthousenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/luigi-mangione-da-omnibus-response.pdf">revealed</a> this week.
&#8220;So say you want to rebel against the deadly, greed fueled health insurance cartel. Do you bomb the HQ? No. Bombs=terrorism,&#8221; Mangione allegedly wrote in a red spiral notebook found in his backpack upon his arrest five days after the shooting.
Manhattan prosecutors are confident that this is “open and shut case,” pointing to evidence continuing to pile up indicating that Mangione’s goal was “to send a message.”
In parts of the diaries that had been previously <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/12/10/nyregion/luigi-mangione-manifesto.html">released</a>, Mangione reasoned that someone should &#8220;wack the CEO at the annual parasitic bean-counter convention. It&#8217;s targeted and precise and doesn&#8217;t risk innocents.&#8221;
The University of Pennsylvania graduate justified targeting insurance providers because they &#8220;literally extract human life force for money,&#8221; and seemed fixated on how his actions would be perceived by the public, adding that &#8220;the point is made in the news headline &#8216;Insurance CEO killed at annual investors conference.&#8217; It conveys a greedy bastard that had it coming.&#8221;
Mangione expressed relief that he had not followed through with a mass-casualty event, allegedly writing, &#8220;I’m glad — in a way — that I’ve procrastinated [because] it allowed me to learn more about UHC.&#8221;
“KMD would’ve been an unjustified catastrophe that would be perceived mostly as sick, but more importantly unhelpful,” Magione allegedly wrote of a potential attack in his home state of Maryland.
The accused assassin reportedly came to this conclusion by analyzing the public reaction to Ted Kaczynski, known as the Unabomber.
&#8220;Ted K makes some good points on the future of humanity, but to make his point he indiscriminately mailbombs innocents. Normies categorize him as an insane serial killer, focus on the act/atrocities themselves, and dismiss his ideas,” Mangione wrote, apparently having a desire for his act of violence to be as palatable as possible for &#8220;normies&#8221; to get behind.
The filing adds that authorities found a note, which has been previously reported on, in Mangione&#8217;s possession during his arrest at a McDonald&#8217;s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, addressed to federal investigators.
&#8220;To the Feds, I&#8217;ll keep this short because I do respect what you do for our country. To save you a lengthy investigation, I state plainly I wasn&#8217;t working with anyone,&#8221; Mangione wrote, describing his attack as &#8220;fairly trivial,&#8221; involving &#8220;some elementary social engineering, basic [computer aided design], and a lot of patience.&#8221;
The note continued with an unapologetic justification: &#8220;I do apologize for any strife or trauma, but it had to be done. Frankly, these parasites simply had it coming,&#8221; then launching into a sanctimonious rant about the state of health care in America.
“If ever there were an open and shut case pointing to a defendant’s guilt, this case is that case. Simply put, one would be hard pressed to find a case with such overwhelming evidence of guilt as to the identity of the murderer and the premeditated nature of the assassination,” prosecutors wrote regarding the entries.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg argued that even disregarding the mountains of physical evidence presented in Wednesday&#8217;s filing, the prosecution still would have enough to convict Mangione on the terrorism count.
“The shooting itself speaks volumes of the defendant’s intent. Defendant chose to shoot the CEO of the United States’ largest health insurance company in front of the hotel where the company was about to conduct its annual investor conference,” Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg wrote in the filing.
Mangione, 27, faces both state and federal murder and terrorism charges in connection with the shooting death of Thompson in Midtown Manhattan on December 4, leading to a five-day manhunt that ended with Mangione’s arrest in Pennsylvania. Mangione has <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/luigi-mangione-pleads-not-guilty-as-doj-seeks-death-penalty?author=Nathan+Gay&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=undefined&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=Luigi+Mangione+Pleads+Not+Guilty+As+DOJ+Seeks+Death+Penalty">pleaded</a> not guilty on all charges.

According to authorities, Mangione <a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/attorney-general-pamela-bondi-directs-prosecutors-seek-death-penalty-luigi-mangione">murdered</a> Thompson, a father of two young children, in a “premeditated, cold-blooded assassination” as an act of “political violence.”
On the federal level, Attorney General Pam Bondi <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2025/04/25/us/luigi-mangione-federal-charges/index.html">announced</a> in late May that the DOJ intends to pursue the death penalty in the Mangione case.
Mangione&#8217;s attorneys have moved to exclude his writings from the court record, arguing their client wasn&#8217;t afforded his constitutional rights when arrested.
Prosecutors responded, agreeing to pre-trial hearings on the admissibility of the evidence, including the red spiral notebook and statements made to police officers.
Mangione is scheduled to appear in court for his state charges on June 26.

Former Washington Post and New York Times tech reporter Taylor Lorenz repeatedly refused to offer outright condemnation of vigilante violence like that allegedly perpetrated by Luigi Mangione against the late UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
Lorenz, who faced backlash for her initial reaction to the broad-daylight execution of the insurance executive, joined Fox News host Sean Hannity on Wednesday — and every time he pressed her on the issue, she tried to qualify Thompson&#8217;s murder by suggesting that insurance company policies provoked violence.

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/taylor-lorenzs-horrible-take-on-suspected-murderer-luigi-mangione-just-got-ten-times-worse" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lorenz</a> sparked outrage when, during an interview with CNN&#8217;s Donie O&#8217;Sullivan, she laughed off the idea that people were becoming &#8220;fans&#8221; of the alleged murderer, saying that he was seen as a &#8220;revolutionary, who&#8217;s famous, who’s handsome, who’s young, who’s smart. He’s a person who seems like he’s this morally good man, which is hard to find.&#8221;
She tried to explain her assessment in greater detail to Hannity.
&#8220;What I&#8217;m describing, and if you watch the full segment, not just the clip, you&#8217;ll see that I&#8217;m just describing the mentality of these fangirls [who] show up outside Luigi&#8217;s court and show up outside his jail cell. Those girls are not me, OK? We have very separate belief systems. But I was describing how they believe,&#8221; she said.
But when Hannity pressed her, several times, to either condemn Mangione&#8217;s alleged actions or others&#8217; calls for assassinations, Lorenz deflected — and at one point, she joked, &#8220;Gosh, you&#8217;re gonna ask if I condemn Hamas next. This is insane!&#8221;
Hannity repeated his prompt several times, but Lorenz continued to pivot, complaining, &#8220;You want to talk about the assassination of innocent people? I believe that the tens of thousands of Americans [who] die each year because of the lack of health insurance. That is, to me, a violence in itself. That is assassination.&#8221;
Hannity tried once more, asking if those cheering on the death of another human being — a husband and a father — lacked &#8220;a soul, a conscience and a heart.&#8221;
&#8220;Well, what I will say, Sean, once again, is that I believe in free speech. I don&#8217;t believe in things like, you know, religious things like souls and all of these things.&#8221;

Former Washington Post and New York Times tech reporter Taylor Lorenz doubled down on her previous comments regarding Luigi Mangione, the man who is charged with the broad-daylight slaying of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
Lorenz, who was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ex-wapo-reporter-taylor-lorenz-says-united-healthcare-ceos-murder-brought-her-joy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">previously blasted</a> for saying that she&#8217;d felt &#8220;joy&#8221; when she heard that Thompson had been gunned down — and then, while attempting to walk that back slightly, simultaneously argued that insurance companies that delayed or denied coverage were guilty of murder. &#8220;Maybe not joy, but certainly not — certainly not empathy,&#8221; she said, shocking show host Piers Morgan and her fellow guests.
Lorenz followed that up with an appearance Sunday on CNN&#8217;s &#8220;MisinfoNation&#8221; with host Donie O&#8217;Sullivan, where she laughed off the people who seem obsessed with Mangione and claimed it was because he seemed to be a &#8220;morally good man&#8221; — and mocked the people who were shocked that anyone would look at an alleged murderer as a hero.

&#8220;To see these millionaire media pundits on TV clutching their pearls about someone stanning a murderer when this is the United States of America. As if we don’t lionize criminals, as if we don’t have, you know, we don’t stan murderers of all sorts, and we can give them Netflix shows,&#8221; Lorenz began. &#8220;There’s a huge disconnect between the narratives and the angles that mainstream media pushes and what the American public feels.&#8221;
O&#8217;Sullivan pressed her to elaborate, mentioning the women who had even showed up outside the courthouse when Mangione was there.
&#8220;You’re going to see women especially that feel like, Oh my God, right? Like, here’s this man who’s revolutionary, who’s famous, who’s handsome, who is young, who’s smart. He’s a person that seems like this morally good man, which is hard to find,&#8221; Lorenz claimed.
Instead of pushing back, O&#8217;Sullivan joked, &#8220;Yeah, I just realized women will literally date an assassin before they swipe right on me. That’s where we’re at.&#8221;
One point of agreement, for both O&#8217;Sullivan and Lorenz, was their belief that the people raving over Mangione and supporters of President Donald Trump were no different.
&#8220;I totally agree. They want somebody to take on this system. They want someone to tear down these barbaric establishment institutions,&#8221; Lorenz explained.
The Daily Wire&#8217;s Matt Walsh was among those who called out both Lorenz and O&#8217;Sullivan, saying, &#8220;Psychotic wench Taylor Lorenz gushes over Luigi Mangione, calls him a &#8216;morally good man,&#8217; and brags that fan-girling a murderer has led to the biggest audience growth she’s ever had. Taylor Lorenz’s Horrible Take On Suspected Murderer Luigi Mangione Just Got Ten Times Worse

California residents may soon have the chance to vote on a measure that would restrict insurance companies from denying coverage — an initiative named after the man who gunned down UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on a New York City street.
The proposed “Luigi Mangione Act” has already found its way to the California attorney general’s desk, according to local outlet <a href="https://ktla.com/news/california/proposed-california-ballot-initiative-luigi-mangione-act-would-make-it-harder-for-insurers-to-deny-medical-care/">KTLA</a>. If enacted, it would then be illegal for insurance companies to “delay, deny or modify any medical procedure or medication” prescribed by California doctors if failure to implement such treatments could result in “disability, death, amputation, permanent disfigurement, loss or reduction of any bodily function.”
The measure would also limit modifications to such treatments to licensed physicians, and make it illegal for anyone other than another licensed physician to review or modify them.
Insurance companies, in order to deny coverage for anything, would have to prove “by clear and convincing evidence that the medication or procedure was unnecessary or would not result in disability, death, amputation, permanent disfigurement or the loss or reduction of any bodily function.”
A number of critics took issue with the initiative, primarily because it was being named after a murderer.

Fox News’ Jimmy Failla posted a video blasting the initiative, saying, “We don’t name legislation after murderers. If we did, we’d have a marriage act named after O.J. Simpson.”
He went on to say that the only thing that really made any sense was to name legislation “after the victims of the thing you’re trying to fix.”

Alleged UnitedHealthcare CEO killer Luigi Mangione is requesting access to a laptop in order to prepare his defense against terrorism charges, according to a court filing made public yesterday.
Mangione, 26, is <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-sdny/pr/luigi-mangione-charged-stalking-and-murder-unitedhealthcare-ceo-brian-thompson-and-use">accused</a> of fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, a 50-year-old father of two high school students, outside a Manhattan hotel in December.
The Ivy League computer science graduate from a Maryland real estate family faces a rare New York State charge of murder as an act of terrorism, as well as federal charges that could carry the death penalty.
The requested laptop would, according to <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2025/03/25/us/luigi-mangione-laptop-jail-united-healthcare/index.html#:~:text=Through%20his%20lawyers%2C%20Mangione%20has,lawyers%20said%20in%20Monday's%20filing.">CNN</a>, “be unable to connect to the internet, run video games or play movies or other entertainment, his lawyers said in Monday’s filing. But it would let him examine, from his jail cell, more than 15,000 pages of documents and thousands of hours of video that prosecutors gathered and were required to turn over to his attorneys.”
Mangione’s case has become a cultural flashpoint. While most Americans were horrified at the alleged brutal murder of a father of two, many Leftists <a href="https://apnews.com/article/united-healthcare-ceo-luigi-mangione-josh-shapiro-3a8c64a0bc412e0eeb84bca0c99b6e67">rallied behind</a> the “#FreeLuigi” movement.
Thousands donated to Mangione&#8217;s defense, and his court hearings have been packed with supporters, to the horror of many.
Crowdfunding efforts launched for his legal defense have collectively <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/mar/21/fundraising-unitedhealth-ceo-shooting?utm_source=chatgpt.com">raised</a> over $700,000, despite platforms repeatedly removing such campaigns.
Many on the Left, according to CNN, seem to be channeling their frustration with the health care system through Mangione, with some going as far as calling him a vigilante.
In court documents, prosecutors describe evidence of extensive planning before the shooting, including Mangione&#8217;s internet search history showing months of queries about Thompson and UnitedHealthcare&#8217;s corporate structure.
Authorities reportedly recovered bullets at the crime scene inscribed with anti-corporate messages and what investigators characterized as &#8220;manifestos&#8221; on Mangione&#8217;s electronic devices detailing grievances against the healthcare industry.
Former Attorney General Merrick Garland <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-sdny/pr/luigi-mangione-charged-stalking-and-murder-unitedhealthcare-ceo-brian-thompson-and-use">said</a> in December, “Mangione planned his attack for months and stalked his victim for days before murdering him — methodically planning when, where, and how to carry out his crime.”
Mangione has pleaded not guilty.
