WASHINGTON, May 26 (Reuters) &#8211; The U.S. Department of Justice&#8217;s Civil Rights Division filed a lawsuit against the University of California, Los Angeles on Tuesday, claiming it tolerated a hostile educational environment for Jewish and Israeli students.
In its complaint, the Justice Department accused UCLA of violating Title VI &#8211; a federal law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, or national origin in any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance &#8211; &#8220;through its deliberate indifference to this pervasive on-campus antisemitism.&#8221;
The lawsuit pointed to an encampment that was built on the university&#8217;s campus in April 2024. The Justice Department described the move as illegal and said that Jewish students were attacked.
&#8220;Universities have an obligation to maintain safe and inclusive campuses for all students,&#8221; said Bill Essayli, the first assistant U.S. attorney for the Central District of California.
&#8220;Universities that violate our nation’s civil rights laws by repeatedly failing to shield Jewish students from antisemitism will be held accountable.&#8221;
UCLA REJECTS ALLEGATIONS
UCLA Chancellor Julio Frenk rejected the allegations, saying the university had taken concrete steps to combat antisemitism on campus.
&#8220;Let me be direct: the suggestion that UCLA has been passive in the face of antisemitism is simply wrong,&#8221; Frenk said in a statement. &#8220;Combating antisemitism is a moral imperative — one rooted, for me, in personal history that makes indifference unthinkable.&#8221;
Frenk said the university had recruited an associate vice chancellor for campus and community safety, reorganized its civil rights office, appointed a Title VI officer, and strengthened policies to protect free expression and campus safety.
Frenk had introduced a campus-wide initiative to combat antisemitism, which issued a report in May outlining a roadmap to address campus antisemitism and bigotry.
In February 2025, the university suspended two leftist student groups, Students for Justice in Palestine and Graduate Students for Justice in Palestine, over their involvement in a protest at the home of University of California regent Jay Sures. The following month, the university recommended revoking SJP&#8217;s status and suspending GSJP for four years.
TRUMP ADMINISTRATION CRACKDOWN ON ANTISEMITISM
The Justice Department announced the lawsuit shortly after a federal appeals court earlier on Tuesday partially upheld an injunction that required it to restore grants awarded to the University of California that the Trump administration had terminated last year because it perceived they supported diversity, equity, and inclusion, or DEI.
The lawsuit is the latest legal action taken by the Trump administration to crack down on what it has described as antisemitism at U.S. universities in the wake of Hamas&#8217; October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel.
The 2023 attack, which resulted in the deaths of more than 1,200 people, launched the Israel-Gaza war.
Hundreds of students across the United States and Europe held demonstrations in the wake of the war, calling for a ceasefire to end it. In some cases, students occupied campus buildings.

The Trump administration accused UCLA’s medical school of discriminating against white and Asian students by defying a Supreme Court decision banning affirmative action in school admissions. 
In a Wednesday <a href="https://www.justice.gov/crt/media/1425726/dl">motion</a> to join a lawsuit against the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, the Justice Department said that the institution was violating the Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution. The original suit was filed by a woman who says she was denied admission into the school because she was white, alongside the groups Do No Harm and Students for Fair Admissions. 
“Even after the Supreme Court banned race-balancing, the Geffen School kept discriminating by using illegal DEI preferences in admissions,” said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. “As the Supreme Court stated more than 80 years ago, a free people, founded on the doctrine of equality, regard distinctions between citizens solely because of their ancestry as inherently odious.”
The complaint filed by the Justice Department argued that the school gathers racial data from its applicants and creates workarounds to factor race into the admissions process. 
This includes a question the DOJ said was asked by UCLA as part of the 2024 admissions process on whether an applicant was a member of a “marginalized” group, and then asked the applicant to explain “how this inequity has impacted you or your community and how educational disparity, health disparity and/or marginalization has impacted you and your community.”
“On its face and by design, this question asks Black applicants to reveal their race so that UCLA Med can know and consider it,” the complaint said. 
Data obtained by the Justice Department shows that white and Asian students are held to higher academic standards than black and Hispanic students. For the 2024 incoming class of students at the medical school, the median MCAT scores were widely different for black students (508), Hispanic students (506), white students (513), and Asian students (515). The MCAT is the test aspiring doctors and medical professionals take before going to medical school. 
The Justice Department&#8217;s complaint identified three “disastrous consequences” of race-based admissions. These were the lowering of academic standards, the suspicion cast on minority doctors because of the lower standards, and the denial of equal treatment to people of all races.  
“There is but one legal avenue for a public or publicly funded medical school to pursue diversity in medicine: admit the most qualified candidates regardless of race, and expect that those most qualified candidates will come from every race, because they do,” the complaint said. 
The Justice Department asked a judge to declare the school’s admissions practices unconstitutional and to bar it from considering race in any fashion when considering prospective students. 
A school spokesman told The Daily Wire that the school doesn’t comment on pending litigation. 
“UCLA’s medical school is committed to fair processes in all of our programs and activities, including admissions, consistent with federal and state anti-discrimination laws,” the spokesman said. 
Do No Harm welcomed the Justice Department’s involvement in the case. 
“The United States was right in its move to join this case, which is of great public importance,” said Do No Harm Executive Director Kristina Rasmussen. “We look forward to the Justice Department’s additional efforts here to get to the bottom of what appears to be an effort by UCLA to continue a race-based medical school admissions process in contravention of the Constitution and the Supreme Court’s decision in Students for Fair Admissions.”

This past May, I graduated from UCLA Law — not as your typical student, but as a father of four who proudly wore T-shirts with American and Israeli flags every day since October 7, 2023, to show my appreciation for America and my support of Zionism. After enduring firsthand antisemitism and religious discrimination, I sued. While sitting for the Bar this past July, I settled with UCLA for a permanent injunction and <a href="https://www.timesofisrael.com/ucla-settles-antisemitism-suit-with-6-13m-payout-as-feds-allege-discrimination/">$6.13 million</a> (In honor of the 613 commandments in the Torah). That same day, the Justice Department found UCLA in violation of <a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/justice-department-finds-university-california-los-angeles-violation-federal-civil-rights">federal civil rights laws</a>. As Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon noted, &#8220;UCLA failed to take timely and appropriate action in response to credible claims of harm and hostility on its campus.&#8221;
I’m grateful for the federal government’s swift investigation and actions, including freezing $584 million in grants and proposing a $1.2 billion fine, which have begun to hold UCLA accountable. This past week a federal judge&#8217;s preliminary injunction temporarily restored most of those NIH and NSF grants amid an ongoing lawsuit, this short-term reprieve doesn&#8217;t absolve the university&#8217;s civil rights violations or halt the push for lasting penalties.
Yet, lawsuits from UC unions and statements from California officials, alongside criticism from some Jewish groups calling these efforts ‘misguided and punitive,’ sow cynicism about the real threats Jewish students face. <a href="https://jewishjournal.com/commentary/opinion/383774/trumps-ucla-funding-cut-hurts-science-and-fails-to-protect-jewish-students/">Article</a> after <a href="https://www.latimes.com/opinion/story/2025-08-19/ucla-1-billion-trump-antisemitism?fbclid=IwY2xjawMRwrBleHRuA2FlbQIxMQBicmlkETF4T1JsV25OTExCM1pDS3M3AR4Fi1kj0Y5eCUpmbtVOsPwqu8bOvRPbV7r57ot5HFAxVla808tPvx19vm-8UQ_aem_2VyFLfrWJ5zIpGSJ1dD6kQ">article</a> and <a href="https://sites.google.com/view/jewsforuc">statement</a> upon <a href="https://jpac-cal.org/2025/08/12/jpac-opposes-demand-of-a-1-billion-settlement-with-ucla/">statement</a> claim efforts to hold UCLA accountable have nefarious motivations and won&#8217;t protect Jewish students. The irony is that not holding UCLA accountable for persistent failure to address antisemitism is what truly endangers Jewish students. To those who stayed silent when Jews were excluded from campus areas and mobs called for &#8220;Intifada&#8221;: kindly sit this one out.
We can debate the details and methods for addressing UCLA&#8217;s abhorrent antisemitism, but one thing is clear: UCLA&#8217;s sidestepping shouldn&#8217;t fool anyone. They&#8217;re ignoring antisemitism, rather than confronting it head-on.
Even more troubling: Why are some Jewish organizations providing cover for UCLA? Ask <a href="https://crownheights.info/chabad-news/886911/poll-show-that-jewish-university-students-overwhelmingly-feel-chabad-on-campus-supports-them/">Jewish student leaders on campus</a>, and they&#8217;ll tell you only a handful of legacy groups have been helpful. It&#8217;s bad enough that some did nothing to empower students; now, they&#8217;re undermining our efforts.

From personal experience, I can spotlight one: the Simon Wiesenthal Center (SWC). My friend Shabbos Kestenbaum and I met with SWC leaders, including the CEO, but nothing came of it. Now, they&#8217;ve &#8220;<a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DNRZv--y-en/?img_index=1">proudly</a>&#8221; signed a letter just last month with the Jewish Public Affairs Committee (JPAC) opposing the federal funding freeze and penalty, claiming it &#8220;does not make Jewish students safer&#8221; (Blind to the reality that perhaps it’s unchecked antisemitism that is making campus unsafe for Jewish students). When I contacted them about how their support spreads lies and misinformation — directly harming Jewish students and covering up antisemitism — I got no response. SWC&#8217;s credibility is now being <a href="https://www.jewishvoicesnj.org/articles/california-jewish-groups-say-trump-1b-demand-of-ucla-does-not-make-jewish-students-safer/">weaponized</a> to shield antisemites, offering silent consent to UCLA&#8217;s inaction instead of demanding real change.
The JPAC statement SWC endorses claims &#8220;meaningful progress is underway.&#8221; Here&#8217;s the reality:

<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">Governor Newsom&#8217;s &#8220;<a href="https://www.gov.ca.gov/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Golden-State-Plan-to-Counter-Antisemitism.pdf">Golden State Plan to Combat Antisemitism</a>&#8220;: This April 2024 pamphlet mentions &#8220;Islamophobia,&#8221; &#8220;Arab Americans,&#8221; &#8220;anti-Arab,&#8221; &#8220;anti-Muslim,&#8221; and &#8220;Muslim&#8221; a combined 24 times across 16 pages—undermining the supposed focus on antisemitism. It&#8217;s mostly fluff about councils making recommendations and commissions assessing data, and it&#8217;s proven ineffective at UCLA.</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">A <a href="https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/press-room/updates-uc-campus-climate-efforts">Letter</a> from the UC President: It supposedly bans encampments, masking to conceal identity, and blocking campus access, while enforcing time, place, and manner restrictions. But encampments were already illegal, students are never asked to unmask, and rules are openly flouted, with little to no real enforcement.</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">Praise for Chancellor Frenk: He &#8220;established a dedicated antisemitism initiative, suspended student groups fostering hostility toward Jews, and delivered forceful remarks.&#8221; In truth, Frenk offers empty words. His only action against SJP followed their protest at a Jewish regent&#8217;s <a href="https://dailybruin.com/2025/02/05/pro-palestine-protesters-demonstrate-outside-uc-regent-jay-sures-home">literal doorstep</a>, harassing him and his family. In June 2024, UCLA&#8217;s Administrative Vice Chancellor, Michael Beck, needed <a href="https://www.instagram.com/reel/C8Ed7ALOPSo/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">security guards</a> to fend off a masked mob — protection not extended to students.</li>
</ol>
That suspension? Meaningless. Less than two weeks later, SJP held another rally in the same spot as the encampment, complete with drums, megaphones, masks, and a poster glorifying Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar. They marched through an academic building, pulled a fire alarm to evacuate classes, blocked streets, and assaulted people — including elbowing me and stealing my USA/Israel flag from a friend nearby — in front of UCLA security.
This was one of many violations, including a grotesque 2024 rally on the anniversary of October 7. After these rallies, their gear is wheeled to the <a href="https://x.com/camhigby/status/1923137670005297443">Muslim Student Association</a> as security turns a blind eye and chases off journalists like Cam Higby. UCLA&#8217;s &#8220;response&#8221;? Sending Student Affairs Monitors to gently &#8220;cajole&#8221; the mob into compliance.
I know UCLA&#8217;s apathy firsthand: UCLA refused to help press charges against encampment participants or discipline any students or faculty. As Andy Ngo <a href="https://x.com/MrAndyNgo/status/1844150116518854735">reported</a>, a law student, Taylor &#8220;Sanyika&#8221; Maloney, remains an enrolled student despite assaulting pro-Israel protesters on camera — including harassing me. She celebrated the murder of Charlie Kirk, openly supported Hamas, and advocated for killing cops. Because UCLA stonewalled law enforcement, the LA City Attorney dropped charges against her and dozens more.
If UCLA truly cared, it would adopt <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1d3ERibWx5D8pS1ky_a8yUX99osE_NqlI/view">recommendations</a> from the Jewish Faculty Resilience Group (JFRG) as a baseline. Instead, this grassroots powerhouse, which has been at the forefront of fighting antisemitism at UCLA, has been ignored and retaliated against.
Donors to large Jewish organizations: Don&#8217;t ask them what they&#8217;re doing for students — ask students what they&#8217;ve done for us. Support groups that students and faculty vouch for.
UCLA&#8217;s environment silences pro-Israel voices. In May 2024, they blocked a pro-Israel speaker, as the Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ucla-blocked-pro-israel-event-conservative-student-group-says">reported</a>. The Daily Wire knows UCLA&#8217;s tactics: In 2017, they dropped an unconstitutional &#8220;<a href="https://www.thecollegefix.com/ucla-drops-unconstitutional-security-fee-demand-ben-shapiro-talk-legal-threat/">security fee</a>&#8221; for Ben Shapiro&#8217;s event. In 2024, I had the honor of <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9OY9krfwX0">introducing Ben Shapiro</a> to a packed crowd (with hundreds outside), despite UCLA&#8217;s obstacles.
As a father of four children under eight — equal parts adorable and mischievous — I know misbehavior doesn&#8217;t change without consequences. Federal cuts and penalties are forcing change; they must continue despite lawsuits and smears. Research grants matter, but they should go to institutions that uphold civil rights, not violate them. Other universities, take note: Defy accountability, and pay the price.

No One Should Help UCLA Dodge Consequences. Especially Not Jewish Organizations.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) sent a letter to University of California at Los Angeles&#8217;s (UCLA) president Tuesday, laying out an extensive list of the University&#8217;s alleged failures at combating antisemitism. This comes closely following a major <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ucla-will-pay-6-million-to-settle-antisemitic-discrimination-complaints">settlement</a> that had the University shelling out $6 million for allowing blatant antisemitism, including a &#8220;Jew exclusion zone.&#8221;
This move by the Trump administration comes after attacks against prestigious schools for DEI initiatives and well-documented antisemitism. Recently, President Donald Trump <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/columbia-university-retreats-as-trump-scores-historic-220m-settlement">announced</a> a massive $200 million settlement with Columbia University for its failure to properly handle anti-Israel protests.
As U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a <a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/justice-department-finds-university-california-los-angeles-violation-federal-civil-rights">press release</a>, &#8220;Our investigation into the University of California system has found concerning evidence of systemic anti-Semitism at UCLA that demands severe accountability from the institution.&#8221;
She added that, &#8220;This disgusting breach of civil rights against students will not stand: DOJ will force UCLA to pay a heavy price for putting Jewish Americans at risk and continue our ongoing investigations into other campuses in the UC system.&#8221;
The 10-page <a href="https://www.justice.gov/crt/media/1409416/dl?inline">letter</a> sent to UCLA President Dr. Michael V. Drake lists quite a few instances of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/anti-semitism">antisemitism</a> on the school&#8217;s campus since the Hamas terror attack on Israel on October 7th, 2023, which set off countless anti-Israel protests on college campuses.
According to the letter, the DOJ alleges that UCLA failed to address illegal violent encampments on school property that occurred in April 2024. Due to these encampments, a few Jewish students were assaulted– including <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecD39KFX6oU">one student</a> who was knocked unconscious and hospitalized.
The letter says that, &#8220;The encampment was in clear violation of a number of existing content-neutral time, place, and manner rules issued by UCLA and the greater UC System regarding the use of campus spaces for expressive activities.&#8221;
Among the other instances of antisemitism that the DOJ recorded was at least 11 separate complaints alleging that demonstrators were discriminating against students because they were Jewish. Students reported being told that, &#8220;Hitler missed one,&#8221; while at other times they were being coerced to denounce Zionism.
The letter cites the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment and Title XI, which &#8220;require that when a school is made aware of alleged harassment, it must respond reasonably by taking timely and appropriate action to investigate or otherwise determine what occurred.&#8221;
This lengthy note to UCLA&#8217;s president is not a formal complaint or lawsuit. However, it does give UCLA a deadline of September 2nd to reach a resolution with the DOJ – at the threat of a possible lawsuit – in order to &#8220;ensure that the hostile environment is eliminated and reasonable steps are taken to prevent its recurrence.&#8221;
U.S. Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon commented about the rampant antisemitism pervasive in the nearly 50,000 student school.
&#8220;UCLA failed to take timely and appropriate action in response to credible claims of harm and hostility on its campus&#8221; Dhillon said. &#8220;Its inaction constitutes a clear violation of our federal civil rights laws, and the Justice Department will hold UCLA accountable to their legal obligations so that all students can have equal protection under the law.&#8221;
A UCLA spokesman said that the school &#8220;has addressed and will continue to address the issues raised in yesterday&#8217;s Department of Justice notice,&#8221; and that the school has &#8220;cooperated fully with the Department of Justice’s investigation and are reviewing its findings closely.

Justice Department Threatens UCLA With Discrimination Lawsuit Soon After $6M Settlement

The University of California, Los Angeles, will pay more than $6 million to settle discrimination complaints that included a &#8220;Jew Exclusion Zone&#8221; on campus.
The school agreed to enter consent judgment and pay $6.13 million to the plaintiffs in the largest private settlement of its kind, the New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/07/29/us-news/ucla-to-pay-6m-to-settle-discrimination-complaints-including-campus-jew-exclusion-zone/">reported</a>. It will be in effect for 15 years if approved by a judge.
“Campus administrators across the country willingly bent the knee to antisemites during the encampments,” Mark Rienzi, president of the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty and an attorney for the students, said in a statement. “They are now on notice: treating Jews like second-class citizens is wrong, illegal, and very costly. UCLA should be commended for accepting judgment against that misbehavior and setting the precedent that allowing mistreatment of Jews violates the Constitution and civil rights laws. Students across the country are safer for it.”
The settlement includes damages to each of the plaintiffs, charitable contributions to pro-Jewish organizations, and attorneys&#8217; fees and costs. The university also agreed to a permanent court order preventing it from enabling the exclusion of Jewish students and faculty from campus, <a href="https://becketfund.org/media/breaking-ucla-agrees-to-permanent-court-order-stopping-campus-antisemitism-pays-6m-in-damages-and-fees/">according</a> to a press release from the Becket Fund.
Last year, a video <a href="https://x.com/OliLondonTV/status/1785030056617611457">showed</a> masked protestors wearing keffiyehs blocking a Jewish student from entering campus, even though he was an enrolled student.
&#8220;I’m a UCLA student, I deserve to go here, we pay tuition,&#8221; the student said as he tried to pass the students to reach his class building. &#8220;This is our school and they are not letting me walk in.&#8221;
&#8220;We&#8217;re not engaging with that behavior,&#8221; one protestor replied without moving.
UCLA Chancellor Gene Block said the behavior was &#8220;really inappropriate,&#8221; and students &#8220;could be&#8221; expelled for discriminating against any student because of race, religion, or ethnicity.
Students sued after Block and the Board of Regents admitted they had taken no action against the protestors who blocked the Jewish student.
Yitzchok Frankel, a recent UCLA Law graduate and one of the plaintiffs in the case, called UCLA&#8217;s actions &#8220;shameful.&#8221;
“When antisemites were terrorizing Jews and excluding them from campus, UCLA chose to protect the thugs and help keep Jews out,” Frankel said in a statement. “That was shameful, and it is sad that my own school defended those actions for more than a year. But today’s court judgment brings justice back to our campus and ensures Jews will be safe and be treated equally once again.”
UCLA&#8217;s settlement comes after Columbia University <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/columbia-university-retreats-as-trump-scores-historic-220m-settlement">agreed</a> to pay more than $200 million to settle with the Trump administration over its handling of anti-Israel protests. UCLA Will Pay $6 Million To Settle Antisemitic Discrimination Complaints

The trial is underway for a professor who sued the University of California, Los Angeles, over his suspension after he refused to grade black students more leniently in the wake of George Floyd&#8217;s highly publicized death.
Gordon Klein, an accounting <a href="https://www.anderson.ucla.edu/faculty-and-research/accounting/faculty/klein">professor</a> at UCLA, is demanding $22 million in damages in a trial that began last week in Santa Monica.
Back in June 2020, just weeks after George Floyd&#8217;s death, Klein received an email from a group of his students asking for a &#8220;no-harm&#8221; final exam that could only help their grades and would involve shorter tests and extended deadlines for final assignments and projects.

The students asked for special accommodations due to “traumas, we have been placed in a position where we much (sic) choose between actively supporting our black classmates or focusing on finishing up our spring quarter,” as The Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ucla-students-want-two-professors-fired-because-they-didnt-accommodate-student-feelings">reported</a> at the time.
“We believe that remaining neutral in times of injustice brings power to the oppressor and therefore staying silent is not an option,” the students told Klein.
The students claimed their request was not “a joint effort to get finals canceled for non-black students,” but rather to “ask that you exercise compassion and leniency with black students in our major.”
Klein responded with several sarcastic emails that got him in trouble with the school.
“Thanks for your suggestion in your email below that I give black students special treatment, given the tragedy in Minnesota,” Klein wrote to the students.
“Do you know the names of the classmates that are black?” the professor asked. “How can I identify them since we’ve been having online classes only?”
Klein also asked about students who “may be of mixed parentage, such as half black-half Asian?”
“What do you suggest I do with respect to them? A full concession or just half?” he quipped.
Klein also wrote that “a white student from [Minneapolis] might be possibly even more devastated by this, especially because some might think that they’re racist even if they are not.”
The professor ended his email response to the complaining students with Martin Luther King Jr.&#8217;s famous quote about not judging people based on the color of their skin.
Students screenshotted Klein&#8217;s email and posted it to social media, where it sparked angry responses.
Klein was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/professor-sues-ucla-after-he-was-suspended-for-refusing-to-grade-black-students-differently-than-white-students">suspended</a> and criticized by UCLA in June 2020 before being reinstated in September 2020, <a href="https://dailybruin.com/2025/06/30/trial-to-begin-in-lawsuit-filed-by-ucla-lecturer-against-administrators">according</a> to the Daily Bruin.
“Conduct that demonstrates a disregard for our core principles, including an abuse of power, is not acceptable,” <a href="https://www.thecollegefix.com/trial-set-to-begin-over-ucla-prof-suspended-after-refusing-lenient-grading-for-black-students/">wrote</a> Anderson School Dean Antonio Bernardo in a message to the campus community. &#8220;I deeply regret the increased pain and anger that our community has experienced at this very difficult time. We must and will hold each other to higher standards.”
UCLA reinstated Klein after just a few weeks, but his reputation and career had already suffered, according to the professor&#8217;s lawsuit.
Klein accuses UCLA of harming his expert witness practice, where he previously made about $1 million a year in high-profile cases, including Michael Jackson’s wrongful death suit.
“By this moment, as a direct and immediate result of [his] public suspension and excoriation, Professor Klein’s expert witness practice had been permanently destroyed,” the lawsuit <a href="https://www.thecollegefix.com/trial-set-to-begin-over-ucla-prof-suspended-after-refusing-lenient-grading-for-black-students/">states</a>.
Meanwhile, UCLA will argue that Klein was suspended for his &#8220;tone and manner.&#8221;
The <a href="https://legalinsurrection.com/2025/07/trial-starts-in-suit-against-ucla-by-prof-gordon-klein-targeted-and-smeared-for-refusing-exam-leniency-for-black-students/">trial</a> is expected to last through the end of next week.

Trial Underway For UCLA Professor Who Refused To ‘Exercise Compassion’ With Race-Based Grading

Homeland Security <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/morning-brief-trumps-liberation-day-doge-pr-battle-self-deportation-push" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recently arrested</a> a Tufts University student, Rumeysa Ozturk, for engaging in “activities in support of Hamas, a foreign terrorist organization that relishes the killing of Americans.”
While the Trump administration&#8217;s arrest of Ozturk is a move in the right direction, she is just one of countless students across the country who share a radical ideology.
Days after the first anniversary of the October 7 massacre which left 1,200 civilians dead, including 40 Americans, the New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/09/nyregion/columbia-pro-palestinian-group-hamas.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">released</a> a chilling headline: &#8220;Pro-Palestinian Group at Columbia Now Backs ‘Armed Resistance’ by Hamas.&#8221;
The article claims a pro-Hamas student group at Columbia University marked the anniversary by distributing a <a href="https://newyorkwarcrimes.com/print-issue-vol-iii-no-13" target="_blank" rel="noopener">newspaper</a> titled “One Year Since Al-Aqsa Flood, Revolution Until Victory.” The headline was placed over an image of Hamas fighters breaching Israel&#8217;s security fence. Additionally, the student group published an essay describing the attack as a “moral, military, and political victory” and citing Ismail Haniyeh, the former political leader of Hamas hiding in Qatar who would later be assassinated. 
In 2024, encampments held by these same student groups multiplied on campuses across the country, from New York University to Harvard, Yale, UCLA, and many others.
How have American institutions come to the place where the mass slaughter of Westerners is celebrated on campus? 
A cursory glance at recent history reveals two driving factors: Mass Islamic migration to the West and mass funding from Islamic countries.
First, some clarification and some definitions. Radical Islam, or Islamism, is not the same as Islam. Rather, it is a radical offshoot that seeks, through political and often violent means, to establish a global caliphate where all citizens, Muslim or not, would be governed by a radical interpretation of Sharia law. While not all Muslims are Islamists, many who migrate are.
<h3>The Crusades</h3>
To truly understand the mindset of Islamists today, it is important to look back at the history of the Islamic empire. Since its rapid and bloody expansion in the 7th Century, the empire has clashed with the Western world a great many times in its pursuit for global dominance. The most famous example being the Crusades (1095-1300AD).
As Daily Wire commentator Michael Knowles <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAPeToyagqA">described</a> on a recent Piers Morgan panel, “The Crusades started because the Eastern Emperor requested help from the Western Pope. The Seljuk Turks were slaughtering Christians in the Holy Land, which had been Christian territory before the Muslim invasion in the 7th century.”
While the Holy Land may have remained in Muslim control at the conclusion of the Crusades, a greater victory was secured by the West that continues to define our world to this day: Islamic expansion was stopped from conquering all of Europe.
Fast forward nearly 1,300 years, and Islamists have yet to give up on the ambitions of their ancestors. Take Lebanon, for example. Once dominated by Maronite Christians, the mass migration and high birthrates of Muslim Arabs in Lebanese society over the 20th century eventually changed that. Today, Maronite Christians are a minority, and the nation is predominantly controlled by Hezbollah, a Shia Muslim terrorist organization.
They have now taken a new, alternative strategy when it comes to Europe and the West: mass migration.
<h3>Mass Migration</h3>
Over the past few decades, mass migration has overwhelmed many European countries.
In 2014, England’s Daily Mail <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2755654/The-changing-face-Britain-A-child-Birmingham-likely-Muslim-Christian.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">published</a> a chilling headline; “The changing face of Britain: A child in Birmingham is now more likely to be a Muslim than Christian”. According to the 2011 census, the second largest city in England with a rich Christian history, had 97,099 Muslim Children growing up there, compared to 93,828 Christian children. 
Radical progressive and generous immigration policies, including England&#8217;s, are to blame for this trend. During a recent Q&amp;A session, Parliament Member and leader of Reform UK Nigel Farage did not <a href="https://youtube.com/shorts/HidQi4mq71U?si=jVaqhsDBuZqMvqgY" target="_blank" rel="noopener">hold back</a> when addressing the state of immigration in the UK:
<blockquote>From after the war up until the millennium, net immigration ran at 30,000 to 40,000 a year. And yes, it worked. In fact, we had the most successful immigration policies of any country in the whole of Europe—no question. Now, it is totally out of control. Just think about this: two and a half million people have come in the last two years … The numbers are now literally unimaginable and are diminishing the quality of life for everyone in this country.</blockquote>
Farage is correct. These policies have significantly worsened life for everyone living in England. A 2018 YouGov poll <a href="https://www.the-independent.com/news/uk/home-news/uk-no-go-zones-muslim-sharia-law-third-poll-hope-not-hate-far-right-economic-inequality-a8588226.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">found</a> that a third of England’s population believed there were areas in the UK they could not enter if they were not Muslim. Now, reports of predominantly Muslim grooming gangs allegedly <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/uk-new-inquiries-child-sexual-grooming-pressure-elon-musk-tweet/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">terrorizing</a> young girls across the country for over a decade have made headlines, while the government turned a blind eye. Meanwhile, Islamic terror attacks remain a grim reality, with the <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c4ngx3341ldo" target="_blank" rel="noopener">last</a> major incident occurring as recently as 2023.
England is not the only European country dealing with an immigration influx. A recent <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/religion/2024/08/19/muslim-migrants-around-the-world/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Pew Research study</a> shows the top two European destinations for migrating Muslims are Germany and France. In both <a href="https://miwi-institut.de/archives/2461?_sm_nck=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Germany</a> and <a href="https://www.thelocal.fr/20171201/how-frances-muslim-population-will-grow-in-the-future" target="_blank" rel="noopener">France</a>, some estimates hold that by 2050 nearly one fifth of their respective populations will be Muslim if record high immigration patterns persist. 
North America is also grappling with mass Muslim migration. According to a <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/religion/2011/01/27/the-future-of-the-global-muslim-population/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2011 study</a> by Pew Research:
<blockquote>The number of Muslims in Canada is expected to nearly triple in the next 20 years, from about 940,000 in 2010 to nearly 2.7 million in 2030. Muslims are expected to make up 6.6% of Canada’s total population in 2030, up from 2.8%.</blockquote>
When an Islamist migrant was <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YuL5pgW9f7g" target="_blank" rel="noopener">asked</a> by a Rebel Media reporter if he would like to see Sharia law implemented in Canada, he replied:
<blockquote>At some point it will! You know because we are having families, we are making babies. You’re not. Your population is going down the slum, right? And by 2060 according to Pew Research institute, your research, by 2060, Muslims will be the biggest religious group.</blockquote>
<h3>Mass Funding</h3>
A key player in subverting their minds is funding. While some universities receive funding from the U.S. government, large dollar amounts are funneled in from foreign governments like Qatar, a major <a href="https://www.fdd.org/analysis/2023/12/19/10-things-to-know-about-hamas-and-qatar/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">funder</a> of Hamas.
According to a 2022 study <a href="https://www.nas.org/reports/outsourced-to-qatar/full-report#_ftn1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">noted</a> by the National Association of Scholars, from 2001-2022 Qatar donated $4.7 billion into universities across the United States. As a direct result of Qatar’s funding, according to <a href="https://www.thelawfareproject.org/campus-discrimination/2020/5/15/qatari-influencing-american-education-system" target="_blank" rel="noopener">research</a> from the Lawfare Project, students across America are “learning about the Middle East in a biased way that emphasizes only the positive aspects of Islam while omitting a balanced discussion of other religions or belief systems, most notably Judaism.”
Imam Hasan al-Banna, the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/biography/Hassan-al-Banna" target="_blank" rel="noopener">founder</a> of the Muslim brotherhood, an influential Islamist organization from Egypt, once shared his commitment to the next generation, “The youth are our hope and the backbone of our movement; train them in the principles of Islam, and they will carry the banner of reform into the future.”
If universities remain under the influence of foreign entities like Qatar, the next generation of college educated Westerners will not only fail to stop the spread of radical Islamists, they will inadvertently support their efforts.
Whether it be through mass migration, funding, or ideological subversion, Islamism is a force the West cannot afford to ignore. World leaders would do well to follow the actions of the Trump administration who have been cracking down on the threat since day one. The West deserves to stay Western, and only through political action can current pushes for a global caliphate be subdued.

Regents of the University of California</a>, a federal judge ordered UCLA last year to stop assisting the agitators, calling the exclusion of Jews from campus ‘abhorrent’ and ‘unimaginable,’” The Becket Fund <a href="https://becketfund.org/media/breaking-justice-department-condemns-ucla-for-jew-exclusion-in-groundbreaking-court-filing/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. “The students and professor recently asked the court to make its ruling permanent so that Jews will never again face antisemitic exclusion.”
The DOJ brief states, “Even though UCLA may not dispute that the antisemitic campus environment at UCLA last year was ‘unimaginable’ and ‘abhorrent,’ the Individual Defendants moved to dismiss this action to evade liability for what happened on the campus that they are supposed to lead and protect. The United States has a significant interest in the proper application of federal laws that ensure equal access to educational opportunities and facilities.”
“The United States, therefore, has a strong interest in ensuring the proper application of Title VI, particularly when the Court has already found that in 2024 on UCLA’s campus ‘Jewish students were excluded from portions of the UCLA campus because they refused to denounce their faith,’” the brief continues. “Additionally, as described in the White House’s Executive Order on Additional Measures to Combat Anti-Semitism, it is the policy of the United States to combat antisemitism vigorously, using all available and appropriate legal tools to prosecute.”

“Jews should never have to fear for their safety when they step foot on a college campus,” said Yitzchok Frankel, the father of four and third-year law student at UCLA who filed the initial lawsuit. “I’m grateful that the federal government has condemned UCLA for kowtowing to antisemites, and I hope this sends a clear message to other universities that think they can do the same.”

DOJ Joins Lawsuit Targeting UCLA For Anti-Semitism

On Monday, after having seen the Trump administration cancel $400 million in federal funding to Columbia University over its failure to address anti-Semitism on its campus, UCLA announced an initiative to combat hostility against Jewish people.
On Friday, the Department of Education <a href="//3DD52ADE-3C84-4587-AB7B-E2FB9BDB038E/v" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stated</a>, “Today, the Department of Justice (DOJ), Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Department of Education (ED), and the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) announced the immediate cancelation of approximately $400 million in federal grants and contracts to Columbia University due to the school’s continued inaction in the face of persistent harassment of Jewish students. These cancelations represent the first round of action and additional cancelations are expected to follow.”
On Monday, Chancellor Julio Frenk wrote to the UCLA community and announced the initiative, <a href="https://chancellor.ucla.edu/messages/initiative-to-combat-antisemitism" target="_blank" rel="noopener">writing</a>, “UCLA is at an inflection point. Building on past efforts and lessons, we must now push ourselves to extinguish antisemitism, completely and definitively. The principles on which UCLA was founded — and which we continue to advance — point us toward a clear course of action: We must persevere in our fight to end hate, however it manifests itself. This is an opportunity for UCLA to rise to the challenge of being an exemplary university.”
Last August, a federal district court issued an injunction against UCLA to stop the university from permitting and aiding anti-Semitic agitators blocking Jews from the campus. The injunction was the first in the nation against a university for permitting an anti-Semitic encampment.
Yitzchok Frankel, Joshua Ghayoum, and Eden Shemuelian sued the regents of the University of California after the university helped anti-Israel activists erect encampments where they blocked Jewish students from going to class, the library, or other areas on campus.
“With the knowledge and acquiescence of UCLA officials, the activists enforced what was effectively a ‘Jew Exclusion Zone,’ segregating Jewish students and preventing them from accessing the heart of campus, including classroom buildings and the main undergraduate library,” UCLA Professor Eugene Volokh <a href="https://reason.com/volokh/2024/06/06/lawsuit-filed-by-jewish-students-against-ucla/#:~:text=With%20the%20knowledge%20and%20acquiescence,and%20the%20main%20undergraduate%20library." target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a> in Reason. “In many cases, the activists set up barriers and locked arms together, preventing those who refused to disavow Israel from passing through. To enter the Jew Exclusion Zone, a person had to make a statement pledging their allegiance to the activists’ views and have someone within the encampment ‘vouch’ for the individual’s fidelity to the activists’ cause.”
“UCLA reinforced these zones—both by providing metal barriers and by sending away Jewish students—while taking no effective action to ensure safe passage for Jewish students,” Becket, which represented the Jewish students, <a href="https://www.becketlaw.org/media/breaking-federal-court-orders-ucla-to-stop-helping-antisemitic-activists-target-jews/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">noted</a>.

UCLA Sees Trump Canceling $400M To Columbia, Suddenly Announces Anti-Semitism Initiative

There are “overwhelming facts, evidence, and testimony&#8221; proving that the University of California allowed a hostile environment on its campuses and failed to protect their employees from anti-Semitic tropes and attacks, senior Justice Department officials told The Daily Wire.
The Justice Department launched an investigation into the University of California system on Wednesday, following extensive reports about pervasive anti-Semitism on its campuses following Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel, which spurred protests and conflict on campuses around the country.
“This Department of Justice will always defend Jewish Americans, protect civil rights, and leverage our resources to eradicate institutional Antisemitism in our nation’s universities,” Attorney General Pam Bondi <a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/us-justice-department-launches-investigation-university-california-under-title-vii-civil" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said in a statement</a> announcing the investigation.
Leo Terrell, the senior counsel to the assistant attorney general for civil rights, who is leading the Justice Department Task Force to Combat Antisemitism, told The Daily Wire that he expects the investigation to compile extensive evidence and testimony that will present “a viable winning case.”
Terrell said that the investigation is part of executing President Donald Trump’s executive order to rid America’s campuses of anti-Semitism.
“Trump and Bondi have made this a number one priority, and I&#8217;m proud and privileged to lead the task force to make sure that we root out anti-Semitism in every aspect of student life,” Terrell told The Daily Wire.
The investigation relies upon both submitted complaints and reporting, including The Daily Wire’s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ucla-student-government-office-refused-to-hire-jews-report-alleges" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a> about the student government at the University of California, Los Angeles, allegedly discriminating against Jews and Zionists in hiring practices.
“This is going to lead to a lot more digging into the university to go behind the scenes, lift up the curtain to figure out what else is going on, including potentially emails among university administration where they&#8217;re flagging this issue and nothing&#8217;s going out,” Justice Department Chief of Staff Chad Mizelle, who is helping lead the investigation, told The Daily Wire.
“We don&#8217;t know what we&#8217;re going to find, but we&#8217;re going to look at everything.”
The investigation seeks to determine if the University of California system violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which forbids employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, and national origin. Under Title VII, the Justice Department has the authority to investigate employers where it has reason to believe that a “pattern to practice” of employment discrimination exists.
“This is alleging that the staff, employees, faculty, professors, and people on the payroll are being subjected to a pattern and practice of harassment, unsafe work conditions, hostile work environment, because the university has refused to take action against blatant anti-Semitic behavior,&#8221; Mizelle said.
The University of California system may be guilty of discriminating against Jews and Israelis based on their race, religion, and national origin, according to Mizelle.
“This is one of these instances where you have actually three separate bases of discrimination that it appears that the university has not taken appropriate action to combat,” Mizelle said.
Mizelle and Terrell said they hope to complete the investigation within 30 days, depending on how complicated their findings are. The duo plans to lead a team that will conduct deep dives into troves of emails and documents as well as interview witnesses, including students.
Once the investigation is complete, Bondi will determine if there is enough evidence to pursue a lawsuit to seek injunctive relief, which would include a court requiring the university to cease discriminatory behavior.
While the University of California system has 10 campuses that will be investigated, the Justice Department plans to pay close attention to UCLA and University of California, Berkeley, where many of the troubling reports about anti-Semitism have stemmed.
In December, The Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ucla-student-government-office-refused-to-hire-jews-report-alleges">reported</a> on a complaint filed regarding the Cultural Affairs Commissioner of UCLA’s Undergraduate Students Association Council, directing her staff to discriminate against Zionists when reviewing job applications.

A document from the group cited in the complaint categorizes Zionism alongside hateful ideologies, stating that any staff member can be removed from their position if they’re found to exhibit “antiBlackness, colorism, racism, white supremacy, zionism, xenophobia, transphobia, sexism, misogyny, ableism, or any/all other hateful bigoted ideologies.”
Terrell, who graduated from UCLA School of Law in 1990, said the DOJ has received numerous reports and complaints accusing the University of California system of creating a “severe and pervasive form of hostility and work environment.”
“That&#8217;s what we&#8217;re going to follow up on,” he said. “That&#8217;s the whole purpose of the notice to investigate.”
“I think there was such a delay in the response of the officials at UCLA as an example of the failure to take corrective action or immediate action or even to protect the students and the workforce at these universities and institutions,” Terrell added.
UCLA has been one of the most prominent schools thrown in the spotlight since the anti-Israel campus protests erupted, with a federal judge in August <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/court-issues-injunction-barring-ucla-from-helping-anti-semitic-agitators-target-jews" target="_blank" rel="noopener">issuing an injunction</a> to stop the school from permitting and aiding anti-Semitic agitators who blocked Jews from the campus.
Regarding UC Berkeley, Mizelle and Terrell pointed to numerous reports of anti-Semitism, including Jewish students being <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/watch-uc-berkeley-jewish-students-forced-to-evacuate-after-mob-storms-event-with-idf-soldier" target="_blank" rel="noopener">forced to evacuate</a> an event featuring Israeli Defense Forces special forces soldier Ran Bar-Yoshafat after a mob of protesters stormed the building.
<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-to-sign-executive-order-to-deport-anti-semitic-foreign-students-and-protesters" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Trump established</a> the task force in January. The order marshals all federal resources to combat anti-Semitism and demands the deportation of foreign anti-Semitic demonstrators who violate American laws, including students on visas.
“There&#8217;s a new sheriff in town with Attorney General Pam Bondi and there&#8217;s a new sheriff in town with President Donald J. Trump,” Mizelle said. “They have made it very clear from the moment that Donald Trump was sworn in from the moment that she was sworn in as attorney general, they will not tolerate this.”
He added that the administration is dedicating “extensive resources” towards the effort to combat anti-Semitism.
“It is because of their leadership in this area that we do believe we&#8217;re going to be successful in rooting out anti-Semitic behavior from our colleges,” Mizelle said.
On Tuesday, Trump <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/114104167452161158">announced</a> on Truth Social that all federal funding for schools and universities would be stopped if they allowed “illegal protest.”
“Agitators will be imprisoned/or permanently sent back to the country from which they came,” Trump said. “American students will be permanently expelled or, depending on the crime, arrested. NO MASKS!”
Terrell and Mizelle said any person who feels as if they were discriminated against should <a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/us-justice-department-launches-investigation-university-california-under-title-vii-civil" target="_blank" rel="noopener">file a complaint</a> with the Justice Department&#8217;s Civil Rights Division.

The Department of Health and Human Services is spending more than $400,000 in taxpayer funds to research the alleged role of “structural racism’s” effects on substance use and HIV outcomes.
The University of California Los Angeles will receive <a href="https://www.usaspending.gov/award/ASST_NON_R01DA061345_7529">just under $440,000</a> from the National Institute on Drug Abuse as it works to blame differences in HIV and substance abuse treatment outcomes on an overarching system of oppression.
“It is well established that racial disparities in HIV care outcomes and use of substances among sexual minority men (SMM) of color persist because of structural racism in Los Angeles County,” the abstract’s opening line <a href="https://reporter.nih.gov/search/tOdEyhgo1UaPJS0JbgaWsQ/project-details/10986884">claims</a>.
The UCLA study seeks to “interrogate” how “historical racist practices influence unequal spatial patterns and how such unequal structural factors are associated with distinct patterns of movement across social and geographic space” among black and Latino “sexual minority men.”

The description for the grant program, which began in September 2024 and extends until July 2029, explains that the academics will use “Critical Race Praxis” and “intersectional anti-racism frameworks.”
It goes on to explain the alleged necessity of the study, arguing that “understanding how structural racism influences how BLSMM navigate the geography of LAC to receive SU and HIV care and how peer case managers, with racial and SU congruence, may enhance access to care will provide novel insights into the relationship between racism and HIV and SU treatment.”
UCLA will collaborate with researchers at the University of California Santa Barbara and the Los Angeles LGBT Center, which The Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/federal-government-to-drop-over-1-5-million-funding-lgbt-youth-mentorship-and-campus-activism">recently reported</a> is set to receive $1.5 million from the Department of Health and Human Services to fund its youth mentorship and campus activism programs.
The UCLA study is one of many ideologically-tinged projects set to receive government funding. The Department of Health and Human Services has also agreed to fund the University of Houston study on “systemic inflammation” caused by “fear of deportation,” The Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/government-to-fund-study-on-fear-of-deportation-leading-to-systemic-inflammation">reported</a>.
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has also been used as a vehicle to advance far-left ideology, with a Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/27-of-national-science-foundation-grants-went-to-dei-projects-study-finds">investigation</a> revealing that 27% of all grants from the NSF went to support diversity, equity, and inclusion projects. Among the leftwing pet-projects raking in taxpayer funding through the NSF was a project at Columbia University to “decolonize geoscience” and another complaining that the academic peer review process is racist.
A representative for the UCLA study did not respond to a request for comment.

At UCLA, Provost Darnell Hunt donned a mask and sat on the ground with protesters, who told him that police are on the side of “Zionists,” and that police are going to commit “brutality” against them. After he said he had “to go,” they screamed “shame” at him.

Hunt made his career opining on police brutality and racism in the aftermath of riots triggered by purported brutality against Rodney King, writing a book called “Screening the Los Angeles ‘Riots’: Race, Seeing, and Resistance.” The titles of his academic papers, below, give an idea of his area of expertise:

The review suggests that the unrest on college campuses is not the result of a small subversive faction, but rather one in line with the ideology of those at the highest ranks of the institutions. The papers, focused heavily on social sciences, also raise questions about the real-world utility of the work of those at even the highest levels of academia.
At Rutgers University, an anti-Semitic protester told a Jewish student that “Hitler would have loved you.” Rutgers leadership went on to give in to many of the protesters’ demands, such as <a href="https://twitter.com/sfmcguire79/status/1786417078058004840/photo/3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">agreeing</a> “to develop a plan for the creation of an Arab Cultural Center with designated physical space and a hiring plan for administrators and staff,” and to “develop training sessions on anti-Palestinian, anti-Arab, and anti-Muslim racism for all RU administrators and staff.”
Rutgers president Jonathan Holloway — a former professor of African American Studies at Yale — has contributed to the academic world through papers such as:
