Two months after the assassination of Charlie Kirk on a college campus in Utah, a Turning Point USA event at the University of California, Berkeley, erupted in violence. <a href="https://calmatters.org/education/2025/11/uc-berkeley-turning-point-fights-arrests/">Over the course of several hours</a>, protesters tried to shut down the event, launched projectiles at attendees, engaged in physical altercations, and sent one attendee to the hospital. While this rightfully prompted an investigation by the Department of Justice’s <a href="https://x.com/AAGDhillon/status/1988272046741111268">Civil Rights Division</a>, the Berkeley riot, and indeed, Kirk’s assassination itself, point to a broader problem: the utter failure of American universities to foster intellectual diversity and a culture of free speech on their campuses.

One reason Turning Point USA events and other events featuring conservative speakers turn violent is that college students are accustomed to living in ideological echo chambers. A <a href="https://www.thefire.org/sites/default/files/2024/12/Faculty-Report-2024-Final.pdf">2024 report</a> by the nonpartisan Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) demonstrates with raw numbers just how bad the problem is. 55% of conservative faculty (compared to just 17% of liberal faculty) hide their political views to protect their jobs. Just 20% of respondents indicated that a conservative individual would be a somewhat or very positive fit in their department, compared to 71% agreeing that a liberal individual would be a positive addition. 47% of conservative faculty feel they cannot express their opinion on a subject because of how other faculty, students, or administrators would respond. While conservative students may be attending and even teaching classes, often unbeknownst to others, a Turning Point USA event may be the first time many students are exposed to the ideas they have learned to perceive as unacceptable or even evil.
Allowing Turning Point USA to hold events — only after imposing exorbitant security fees and forcing organizers through a Byzantine permitting process — is nowhere near enough. The First Amendment requires as much. Universities have an obligation to their students, and indeed, to the country, to expose students to a broad range of ideas. Rather than let racial diversity drive hiring decisions, universities should strive to ensure that conservative views are represented in social studies and humanities departments. Students should be exposed to the ideas of conservative philosophers, economists, and historians, just as they will invariably be exposed to those of liberal (and even Marxist) thinkers. Universities should cultivate debating societies where participants must advocate positions that differ from their own, and audiences are exposed to competing ideas. And when organizations like Turning Point USA host events, university leaders need not endorse the viewpoints their speakers express, but they should make clear that the speaker is welcome on campus. While a university president attending a Turning Point USA event would likely inflame controversy in the short term, it would send a strong signal that the university’s commitment to intellectual diversity is real.
Fostering open dialogue and the free exchange of ideas is only half the battle. University administrators should adopt zero-tolerance policies for efforts to interfere with others’ speech and learning on college campuses, violent and non-violent alike. Students who engage in violence must be disciplined, up to and including expulsion. Too many universities give students a free pass when their violence relates to a conservative speaker rather than some interpersonal squabble. But engaging in violence to shut down speech makes the conduct worse, not better, as it is inimical to the purpose of a university. Administrators should craft course evaluations that assess whether the instructor fostered a free exchange of ideas and take it seriously when instructors flunk this critical test. Professors who shut down speech or foster self-censorship should adapt to the new norms or find a different profession.
Charlie Kirk’s assassination should have served as a wake-up call to American universities. While the suspect was not a Utah Valley University student, the shooting nonetheless spoke to a broader failure in American higher education. Too many students see conservative viewpoints as tantamount to violence, and those viewpoints are thus seldom expressed. And when they are, such as at Turning Point USA’s recent event in Berkeley, a violent response is all too common. Universities must take action to reverse this erosion of free speech by prioritizing the robust exchange of opposing views and disciplining, rather than coddling, those who exercise a heckler’s veto against conservative speech.

The Department of Justice launched a &#8220;full investigation&#8221; into the leftist demonstrations that took place outside of a Turning Point USA event at the University of California, Berkeley, Attorney General Pam Bondi announced on Tuesday.
Bondi said that Antifa was behind &#8220;violent riots&#8221; at UC Berkeley on Monday after leftist agitators showed up at the venue hours before the TPUSA event began on campus, harassing conservative attendees as they lined up for the event. The investigation is being led by the FBI&#8217;s Joint Terrorism Task Force, which focuses on international and domestic terrorism.
&#8220;Antifa is an existential threat to our nation. The violent riots at UC Berkeley last night are under full investigation by the FBI-led Joint Terrorism Task Force. We will continue to spare no expense unmasking all who commit and orchestrate acts of political violence,&#8221; Bondi <a href="https://x.com/AGPamBondi/status/1988339354754769099">wrote</a> in a post on X. &#8220;Under President Trump’s leadership, and pursuant to his Executive Order designating Antifa as a domestic terrorist organization, the Department of Justice and our law-enforcement partners are dismantling violent networks that seek to intimidate Americans and suppress their free expression and First Amendment rights.&#8221;
Two people were arrested after a fistfight broke out between one of the agitators and a man wearing a red Turning Point USA t-shirt. One person was charged with battery, but it&#8217;s unclear if the person who was charged was one of the two men who were seen fighting.

Two more people were arrested for attempting to get past a barrier police had set up to separate protesters from attendees. Some of the agitators lit flares and shouted at the conservative attendees as they waited to enter the building, and when they left after the TPUSA event ended.
The event, which was the last stop on the &#8220;This is the Turning Point” tour, went on as planned, capping off a tour that was started by TPUSA founder Charlie Kirk on September 10 at Utah Valley University, when he was assassinated while speaking to college students.
The DOJ&#8217;s Civil Rights division is also probing the leftist demonstrations at UC Berkeley, according to Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon.

UC Berkeley, which has long been one of the most liberal universities in the United States, was at the center of violent demonstrations when leftist groups protested right-wing commentator Milo Yiannopoulos’ planned speech in 2017. Dhillon brought some of the legal challenges against the university that same year over the free speech case.

Conservatives attending the final stop on the “This is the Turning Point” tour at the University of California, Berkeley, on Monday night were met by hundreds of leftist agitators as police in riot gear tried to keep the protesters contained.
Protesters, some of whom wore keffiyehs, showed up outside the venue on campus hours before the event started and confronted the attendees as they lined up to enter the building. At one point, an agitator got into a fistfight with a man wearing a red Turning Point USA shirt. The event attendee was pictured with a bloodied face, as both he and the agitator were detained by police, The New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/11/11/us-news/bloody-brawl-breaks-out-as-agitators-protest-tpusa-event-at-uc-berkeley-in-california/">reported</a>.

Police confirmed that two people were arrested, including one person charged with battery, following the fistfight. It&#8217;s unclear if one of the men involved in the fistfight was the person charged with battery. Police set up a barricade between protesters and attendees before and after the event as agitators lit flares and shouted at the conservative attendees. Two more people were arrested after attempting to get past the barricade, The Mercury News <a href="https://www.mercurynews.com/2025/11/10/uc-berkeley-turning-point-usa-arrests/">reported</a>.

The event at Cal Berkeley, one of the most liberal universities in America, featured comedian Rob Schneider and Christian apologist and writer Dr. Frank Turek. It was the final event on the TPUSA college tour that Charlie Kirk began in September. Kirk was assassinated while speaking to college students at Utah Valley University on the first stop of the tour on September 10.
Andrew Kolvet, the chief spokesman for TPUSA and executive producer of &#8220;The Charlie Kirk Show,&#8221; said &#8220;Antifa thugs&#8221; were responsible for attempting to stop Monday&#8217;s event. Even as left-wing protesters crowded outside, the event went ahead as planned before a packed audience inside.

UC Berkeley said it was prepared for the fierce opposition to the TPUSA event on its campus.
“The campus fully supports the rights and ability of every single student organization to invite whatever speakers they wish, regardless of their beliefs or perspectives,” said UC Berkeley Assistant Vice Chancellor Dan Mogulof.

Eric Trump, along with his wife, Lara, and conservative commentator Benny Johnson, was at Auburn University for a Turning Point USA event on Wednesday night when he picked up his phone and called his father.
&#8220;It says &#8216;Dad POTUS&#8217; on his phone, just so you know,&#8221; Eric&#8217;s wife, Lara, told the crowd.
&#8220;Hello,&#8221; Trump said. That&#8217;s all it took for the crowd to go wild.
The students immediately did what all Gen Zers do — took out their phones and started recording.
&#8220;I just want to say hi to everybody. I hope Eric is doing a good job,&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;I love you all, the country is doing great.&#8221;
The crowd was even more hyped up when the president talked about his love for Auburn.
&#8220;Auburn is a special place, I&#8217;ve been there many times, and I know many people from that area, number one, and from that school,&#8221; Trump said.
In Trump fashion, he mentioned how well he did in Alabama last November and praised the students for their turnout in the 2024 election. Trump also mentioned the late Charlie Kirk, saying that he played a huge role in Republicans’ 2024 election victory.
&#8220;I just want to pay my respects to Charlie and Erika, these are great people,&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;We know Charlie is looking down on us.&#8221;
Trump then went full dad mode again on Eric, telling his son, &#8220;You better do a good job, these are smart people they know if you&#8217;re not doing a good job and they will report back to me.&#8221;
After the call, the crowd erupted into chants of &#8220;USA! USA!&#8221;

Eric and Lara were also joined by Alabama Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville on Auburn&#8217;s stop for the &#8220;This is The Turning Point Tour.&#8221;
Tuberville, who coached football at Auburn and won six Iron Bowls in a row, told the college students that they must continue where Charlie left off.
&#8220;I&#8217;m telling you this as a so-called politician, politicians aren&#8217;t going to help you,&#8221; Tuberville said. &#8220;It&#8217;s going to be your generation that gets this mess straightened out.&#8221;
&#8220;This is The Turning Point Tour&#8221; continues Monday at UC Berkeley with more stops being announced soon.
Erika Kirk, who joined the tour at Ole Miss, told Fox News host Jesse Watters Wednesday night she can feel Charlie&#8217;s presence on college campuses.
Trump told the Auburn students that he also believes Charlie is looking down at them.
&#8220;He&#8217;s looking down on us right now, all of us,&#8221; Trump said over the phone.
It&#8217;s the first time Trump has been part of a TPUSA campus event since Charlie&#8217;s assassination.
He wrapped up his phone call with the crowd, just like any good dad would.
&#8220;I love you all as President of the United States, I love you all.&#8221;

Erika Kirk made several revelations during an as-yet-unaired interview with Fox News host Jesse Watters, as the previews have shown.
The widow of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated during a campus event in November, said she would like to have cameras in the courtroom during the murder trial of accused killer Tyler Robinson.
“There were cameras all over my husband when he was murdered,” Kirk told Watters in the promo clip. “There have been cameras all over my friends and family mourning. There have been cameras all over me, analyzing my every move, analyzing my every smile, my every tear.”

“We deserve to have cameras in there,” the grieving widow added.
“Why not be transparent?” she added. “There’s nothing to hide. I know there’s not, because I’ve seen what the case is built on.”
Robinson was charged with aggravated murder and six other counts after turning himself in to police after the shooting. Prosecutors will be seeking the death penalty in this case.
“Let everyone see what true evil is,” Kirk told Watters. “This is something that could impact a generation and generations to come.”
During the same interview, the new head of Turning Point USA also said that the broadcasting company Sinclair had reached out to her asking if she’d like an apology from late night host Jimmy Kimmel after he made comments indicating that Tyler may be associated with “MAGA.” Kimmel’s show was suspended for a few days after, leading to national outcry from liberals.
“Jimmy Kimmel lied about your husband’s murder and didn’t really apologize, what would you say to Jimmy Kimmel?” Watters asked Kirk.
“Same thing I told Sinclair,” Kirk responded. “They asked, I haven’t really told anybody this, so they asked, ‘do you want Jimmy to give you an apology? Do you want to be on a show? How can we make it right?’ Through our team, I responded, I said, tell them thank you, we received their note.”
“This is not our issue, not our mess,” she added. “If you want to say I’m sorry to someone who’s grieving, go right ahead. But if that’s not in your heart, don’t do it. I don’t want it. I don’t need it.”

Vice President JD Vance spoke about Trump administration policy, his approach to politics, his faith and family life, and more while taking questions at a Turning Point USA event at the University of Mississippi on Wednesday evening.
Vance appeared at the event at the request of Erika Kirk, the widow of late Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated last month at a college event in Utah. The vice president delivered brief remarks before taking questions in front of hundreds of students who packed the auditorium to see Erika and the vice president speak.
Here are some of the highlights from the vice president’s appearance.
One student, a supporter of the Trump administration, worried that the administration was accruing power and setting precedents that would later be used against conservatives.
The vice president responded that, while the question is fair, he is unconcerned about precedents set for a potential Democratic successor to take advantage of. He suggested that Democratic efforts to have the FBI and other law enforcement investigate President Donald Trump and other Republicans show that Democrats are unlikely to respect norms in any case.
“We cannot be afraid to do something because the Left might do it in the future. The Left is already going to do it regardless of whether we do it,” said Vance. “That is the takeaway of the last 40 years.”

“As I’ve told her and I’ve said publicly and I’ll say now in front of 10,000 of my closest friends, do I hope eventually that she is somehow moved by the same thing that I was moved by in church? Yeah, I honestly do wish that, because I believe in the Christian gospel and I honestly hope that my wife comes to see it the same way,” said Vance.
Vance also delivered a defense of Christianity and its values, citing a verse from Matthew.
“One of my favorite Bible verses is ‘by your fruits, ye shall know them.’ And I think that the fruits of the Christian faith are the most moral, the most just, and the most prosperous civilization in history,” said Vance. “I make no apologies for believing that Christianity is the pathway to God. I make no apologies for thinking that Christian values are an important foundation of this country, but I’m not going to force you to believe anything because that is not what God wants, and that is not what I want, either.”

On immigration, Vance was asked by a student who is dating an immigrant in the United States on a visa about his overall approach. The vice president said that, in his view, while there are immigrants who enrich the United States, the country has far too many immigrants now and admits too many each year.
“There are people who want to come to the United States of America, and some of them, I am sure, can enrich the United States of America by coming here, but we have got to get our overall numbers way, way down,” he said.

Turning Point USA CEO Erika Kirk told a crowd of students at the University of Mississippi on Wednesday that her late husband Charlie learned how to have courage by starting his day with three simple questions.
Kirk spoke to hundreds of students at Ole Miss at a TPUSA university rally just seven weeks after her husband’s assassination at an event in Utah. Kirk spoke ahead of Vice President JD Vance, who had agreed to participate in the Turning Point USA event at Kirk&#8217;s request.
Kirk said her husband, who led Turning Point USA until his death, started his days with a routine that made him think about his purpose and serving others.
First, Charlie would wake up and see a phrase that his wife had hung on his side of their bedroom. The sign read: “They will be known by the boldness of their faith.” Kirk said she never appreciated the strength of the phrase until she was able to sleep in their bedroom again for the first time since Charlie’s murder.
When Charlie made it into his office, he asked himself three questions every morning that set the tone for the rest of his day.
“What is something I can do for someone today? The second was: what is something I can do to add value to the world today? And the third was: how can I honor God today?” Kirk told the crowd. “Those were the three questions combined with the words he saw every single morning. So to me, seeing that, seeing on his desk, that was him suited up with the armor of the Lord every day.”

“I can hardly watch this video. They took this sweet baby&#8217;s dad &amp; it&#8217;s inevitable that one day she&#8217;ll see the graphic video of how,” women’s sports defender and two-time NCAA All-American swimmer Riley Gaines wrote in response. “Continued prayers for Charlie&#8217;s family.”
“It’s the same gut punch all over again. I don’t know how she does it. Takes a great deal of strength that I can’t even imagine,” another comment <a href="https://x.com/ChoooCole/status/1982988550724567084">said</a>. 
“Oh my this just shatters my heart,” a third person <a href="https://x.com/daniel_dinoia/status/1982941911657918498">replied</a>. “Never stop praying for this beautiful family.” 
Kirk was assassinated while speaking at a college event in Utah in September. The Turning Point USA founder was shot in the neck before being rushed to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Earlier this month, President Donald Trump posthumously awarded Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor.

The same day that President Donald Trump <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/donald-trump-honors-his-friend-charlie-kirk-with-the-presidential-medal-of-freedom?author=Mary+Margaret+Olohan&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=1&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=Donald+Trump+Honors+His+Friend+Charlie+Kirk+With+The+Presidential+Medal+Of+Freedom">honored</a> the late Charlie Kirk with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, hundreds of Utah college students gathered in Salt Lake City for a memorial honoring the Turning Point founder&#8217;s life. 
Students from chapters of Kirk’s Turning Point organization from nearby universities like Brigham Young University and Utah Valley University, where Kirk was assassinated last month, gathered alongside Republican lawmakers at the Utah Capitol building on Tuesday to reflect on Kirk’s life. Rep. Brandon Gill, a Texas Republican, spoke at the event and urged young conservatives in attendance to carry on Kirk’s legacy. 
“One of the things that Charlie talked a lot about during his lifetime was the value of political debate,” Gill said.  “Whenever we win the debate we get to change policy. And whenever we change policy, we can start to take our country back. And we’ve seen that this year.” 
During his speech, Gill issued a warning about the rise of violence committed by the political Left. 
&#8220;It&#8217;s not just Charlie Kirk. Right now there’s an attorney general’s race in Virginia where the leading Democrat candidate just had some of his text messages released where he was saying he would celebrate the death of his political opponents, that he would celebrate the death of his opponents&#8217; young children,” he said, referring to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/heres-how-jay-jones-text-scandal-may-blow-up-dem-chances-in-virginia">bombshell text messages</a> promoting violence from Democrat attorney general candidate Jay Jones. 
Gill told The Daily Wire that the students at the event were somber but “fired up.” 
“We heard from probably 20 or so student leaders from a few different campuses in the area,” he said. “And they were ready to take back our country. They saw what happened to Charlie. They remember the message that Charlie had been putting out there.”
Gill also praised the students in attendance for continuing Kirk’s legacy of engaging in civic debate. He said that respectful debate among two completely opposing ideologies would be one aspect of Kirk’s legacy that would live on. 
“The other thing that Charlie did was he was able to build a political movement and get young people involved in politics in a way you&#8217;ve never seen before,” he said. “ Charlie made it, and Turning Point has made it cool to be a conservative for a young person who&#8217;s in college.”

The Texas Republican also said that Kirk’s message of going to church, getting married, and having kids would continue to resonate with young Americans. 
Student leaders who spoke at the event called for young conservatives to carry on Kirk&#8217;s message. 
“Tonight we’re picking up the mic and carrying forward this message louder and bolder than ever before,” <a href="https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/president-trump-awards-charlie-kirk-221558652.html">said</a> Turning Point USA Provo chapter president Aubree Farmer. “We were born for such a time as this, and it’s time for people to start listening.”

‘Made It Cool To Be A Conservative’: Charlie Kirk’s Legacy Celebrated At Utah Capitol

Wyoming Republicans are crying foul after a high school student said her school treats her Turning Point USA Club America chapter unfairly and blocks them from engaging in activities that similar clubs are allowed to do. 
Natrona County High School senior Kylie Wall told The Daily Wire that the Club America chapter she started has received a chilly reception from school administrators who have exercised a heavy hand over the group&#8217;s activities. This includes taking limited action after school staff ripped down posters for the club at the school, she said. 
State Senator Rachel Rodriguez Williams, the chair of the Wyoming Freedom Caucus, told The Daily Wire that school officials appeared to be chilling the free speech of conservative students. 
&#8220;At best, NCHS administrators are chilling the protected speech of students, which is unacceptable,” she told The Daily Wire. “At worst, they’re systematically silencing the speech and activities of students on and off campus, which is indefensible.”
The Wyoming Freedom Caucus filed a public records request on Sunday, demanding all communications to or from Natrona County High School Principal Aaron Wilson containing the terms “Club America” or “Turning Point USA.” Natrona County High School is located in Casper, Wyoming’s second most populous city. 
Wall told The Daily Wire on Thursday that she had serious concerns about equal treatment, free speech, and student rights under district policy and the federal Equal Access Act, which requires schools receiving federal funds to have equal opportunities. 
&#8220;As students, we simply want to be treated fairly, to have our voices respected, and to participate in the same opportunities afforded to other clubs,&#8221; she said. &#8220;We look forward to working toward a resolution that upholds district policy and students’ constitutional rights.&#8221;
Wall, who started a Club America chapter shortly after the assassination of Charlie Kirk, says that school officials have blocked them from participating in public meetings off campus and failed to take sufficient action after she saw school staff tearing down advertisements for the club. 
&#8220;Approved Club America flyers have been removed by staff, and some teachers have made disparaging remarks about our club and its members,&#8221; Wall told The Daily Wire. &#8220;Despite these reports, the administration has taken little action to address them, contributing to a hostile environment for students who hold different viewpoints.&#8221;
Natrona County School District noted that it recognized two Club America chapters, one at Natrona County High School and another at Kelly Walsh High School.
&#8220;These student-led clubs are open to high school students who are interested in learning about government, civic responsibility, and active citizenship. Like all student-led clubs, school-based meetings are student-driven and are not open to the public,&#8221; the county told The Daily Wire. &#8220;We continue to encourage students from all high schools to work together and collaborate in many different capacities.&#8221;
Rodriguez Williams said that the Wyoming Freedom Caucus “reminds all Wyoming school districts that students don’t shed their First Amendment rights at the schoolhouse doors. We are disgusted that school staff would tear down posters advertising Club America, but are filled with hope for the future at the bravery and poise of these patriotic students.&#8221;
In addition to the posters being pulled down, school officials have reportedly blocked Wall’s chapter from meeting with another local Turning Point USA club, prohibited them from attending an off-campus banquet hosted by the Wyoming Family Alliance, and told Wall that she could not do an interview on the club without the principal’s presence. 
&#8220;Our club was prohibited from attending a community event hosted by the Wyoming Family Alliance, even though other student organizations — such as athletic teams and Key Club, and others — routinely attend similar off-campus events,&#8221; Wall said. &#8220;This restriction seems inconsistent with district practice and limits our club’s opportunities to participate equally in civic activities.&#8221;
Wyoming Family Alliance Executive Director Nathan Winters confirmed that Wilson told them to &#8220;exclusively&#8221; reach out to Club America through him and declined the invitation to the banquet. He added that they never received a response when they asked if there was a district policy blocking the students from engaging in community events.
“Wyoming Family Alliance will always stand with students who want to engage in civil public discourse and experience the true meaning of American citizenship,&#8221; Winters told The Daily Wire. &#8220;We are disappointed and deeply concerned when any school or administrator restricts those first steps toward civic participation. Students should be encouraged, not silenced, when they seek to learn, lead, and contribute to their communities.”
Wall added that she &#8220;was instructed not to speak to reporters about our chapter without direct administrative supervision, or even on my own time,&#8221; while students at other high schools were not restricted in the same way. 
Following the assassination of Kirk last month in Utah, Turning Point USA has reported a massive surge in requests to form new chapters on both high school and college campuses. The organization said last week that it has launched 1,500 new high school chapters nationwide, up from roughly 1,200 total before Kirk’s death.

The controversy over Bad Bunny being selected as the halftime entertainment sparked a larger debate about recent musical performances at the biggest sporting event of the year. Suggestions came pouring in for an alternative event, with conservative commentator Jack Posobiec <a href="https://x.com/JackPosobiec/status/1972679814629765266">posting</a> to X, “Sure would be a shame if @TPUSA hosted a counter-Superbowl halftime show with Creed.” That post went viral.
Other prominent voices floated names of country and rock icons, each known for English-language hits.

A Tennessee university on Thursday approved the creation of a Turning Point USA chapter on campus after the conservative group faced opposition from the school’s student government.
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC)’s Student Government Association on Wednesday voted against approving the Charlie Kirk-inspired club, sparking backlash from conservative lawmakers. Less than 24 hours after that vote, the university announced that it had approved the application in accordance with school guidelines. 
“The Dean of Students Office has determined that Turning Point USA is approved as a Registered Student Organization,” the university <a href="https://x.com/UTChattanooga/status/1976295599986122883">announced</a> Thursday morning. “While the Student Government Association may voice opinions, recognition of student organizations is determined by the UTC Dean of Students and Chancellor. Turning Point USA has been authorized in accordance with university policy and the law.”  
Calls to approve the club poured in after Turning Point USA spokesman Andrew Kolvet said that UTC’s student government had denied the request to approve the formation of the club.

“This decision effectively blocks our students from gaining official recognition on campus. As a result, the students will be forced to restart the process, reapplying and once again facing the same SGA that has already demonstrated clear bias against them. Tennessee, are these the values of your state? Your tax dollars are propping this garbage up,” Kolvet <a href="https://x.com/AndrewKolvet/status/1976125274065690716">posted</a> on X.
After the vote, the university stated that final approval for the club went through school officials, not the student government. 
Shortly before the university announced its decision to approve the club, Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) urged school officials to “do the right thing.” 
“The Student Government Association at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga just voted to recommend that a [TPUSA] chapter not be approved,” Blackburn <a href="https://x.com/VoteMarsha/status/1976284203068293217">wrote</a> on X. “Do the right thing and approve the Turning Point chapter immediately.”
Several state Republican representatives also commented on the student government’s vote, saying that the university would approve the application. 
Rep. Jason Zachary, a Republican who represents part of Knoxville, <a href="https://x.com/JasonZacharyTN/status/1976255673911427512">said</a> Thursday that he had spoken with Randy Boyd, the president of the University of Tennessee system, about the student government association’s vote. Zachary urged Turning Point USA to reach out to him if they had any other problems. 
After UTC announced the approval of the club, Tennessee House Majority Leader William Lamberth, a Republican, praised the school. 
“Glad to see [TPUSA] approved at [UTC]. Looks like some of these young conservatives need to run against the liberal SGA who didn&#8217;t even want their voices heard on campus,” he <a href="https://x.com/WilliamLamberth/status/1976297054151315518">said</a>. “Appreciate the Dean standing for free speech.”
Following the assassination of Kirk last month in Utah, Turning Point USA has reported a massive surge in requests to form new chapters on both high school and college campuses. The organization said last week that it has launched 1,500 new high school chapters nationwide, up from roughly 1,200 total before Kirk’s death.
