The danger zone is calling — again. It’s been announced that “Top Gun 3” is officially in the works.
Paramount broke the good news at CinemaCon in Las Vegas this week, confirming that Tom Cruise will be back in a leading role. Jerry Bruckheimer is also on board as producer.
Josh Greenstein, co-head of Paramount Pictures, said it’s “officially in development with a script underway.”
Cruise did not appear live at the industry event, but footage aired in the convention hall showed the actor standing on tip of the water tower on the Paramount lot in Los Angeles.
“The future looks pretty great from here,” Cruise can be heard <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/top-gun-3-script-underway-tom-cruise-1236566290/">saying</a> in the clip.
This comes as no surprise after the massive success of “Top Gun: Maverick” in 2022. Despite a gap of 36 years between the first “Top Gun” (1986) and the sequel, it became an absolute box office smash and the most lucrative film of actor Tom Cruise’s long and successful career.
“Maverick” <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/paramount-is-working-on-top-gun-3-with-tom-cruise-report?author=Amanda+Harding&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=undefined&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=Paramount+Is+Working+On+%E2%80%98Top+Gun+3%E2%80%99+With+Tom+Cruise%3A+Report">earned</a> a whopping $1.49 billion at the global box office. It was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won Best Sound.
It was also named the Best Film of 2022 by the movie review site Rotten Tomatoes. “Maverick” was rated 96% certified fresh from critics out of nearly 500 reviews and achieved a near-perfect 99% fresh audience score.
It’s believed that one reason the “Top Gun” sequel performed so well is that it was free from radical progressive messaging and virtue signaling. The action film recalled a simpler time in Hollywood, when movies were made to inspire and entertain rather than to push an agenda.
The Federalist called the “Top Gun” sequel “unabashedly patriotic” and “free of token left-wing social and political propaganda.” Reviewer Elle Reynolds wrote, “The only agenda being pushed is that America is the best country in the world and the men and women who risk their lives to defend her are heroes worthy of our respect.”
Another surprising detail about the sequel is how it appealed to a range of audiences, both young and old.

While Joseph Kosinski may lacks the name recognition, let alone the resume of those cinematic giants, he’s still responsible for two of the most all-American films of the past decade. Three if you count a little-seen gem about our brave firefighters.
One film literally <a href="https://variety.com/2023/film/news/steven-spielberg-tells-tom-cruise-saved-hollywood-top-gun-maverick-1235522763/">saved movies</a>, according to none other than Steven Spielberg.
Kosinski’s “Top Gun: Maverick” did more than extend the popular ‘80s smash. It brought movie goers back to theaters following the pandemic. And you’d be hard pressed to find a more patriotic, “<a href="https://open.spotify.com/track/5K6kkL6powWwpoHy6WFiN2">America [bleep} Yeah</a>” movie over the past decade.
He has a feel for old school Hollywood that could save the industry from itself. Here&#8217;s what makes his film so refreshing.

Irrelevancy.

We all know what happened next. Maverick dug back for something extra, defied authority, fell for an old flame and gave young pilots the courage to complete a death-defying mission.
Kosinski didn’t inject woke into a single frame of his film. Nor did he shy away from American excellence, let alone the “need for speed.” His film hearkened back to old-school Hollywood movies with handsome heroes, lovely ladies and a determination that cannot be denied.
Why wouldn’t it earn a whopping $718 million in U.S. theaters alone? It’s the movie audiences were waiting for all along.
And Kosinski just did it again.
“F1” stars Brad Pitt as an aging race car driver hoping for one last shot at glory. He’ll have to make nice with a talented rookie (Damson Idris) and defeat old demons to get back in the winner’s circle.
Sound familiar?
The parallels don’t end there. Both films offer slick, you-are-there visuals, generational tension and a commitment to the American Dream. If you work hard enough, anything is possible.
“F1” raced to $57 million in its opening weekend stateside, the most for any original film this year.

Both films feature heroes willing to try new things, to push past conventional boundaries to achieve their dreams. That plays into the entrepreneurial pluck in America’s DNA.
It helps that Kosinski snagged two older movie stars who defy Father Time. Each is given a full-bodied romantic story arc at a time when Hollywood often forgets how much audiences crave that part of the hero’s journey.
Scarlett Johansson co-stars with three handsome co-leads in “Jurassic World Rebirth.” There’s not a hint of romance in the film. And that’s more common than ever.
Cruise and Pitt lean into their movie-star looks, as does Kosinski. He made their characters vulnerable but undeniably masculine. That’s refreshing.
The films deliver crowd-pleasing thrills without guilt or compromise. They also scored a 99 and 97% “fresh” rating, respectively, from general audiences at RottenTomatoes.com.
The irony? Kosinski’s previous film, 2017’s “Only the Brave,” also served up heroism from a decidedly heartland perspective. The fact-based story recalls the men of the Granite Mountain Hotshots who risked it all to defeat an ominous Arizona wildfire.
Josh Brolin, Miles Teller and Jennifer Connelly starred in a film that got ignored by audiences at the time. Seen today, Kosinski’s knack for slick visuals and on-screen bravery paved the way for “Maverick.”

The film’s core themes aren’t an accident. The 51-year-old director told a reporter he has a <a href="https://cultmtl.com/2025/06/winning-at-underdog-stories-joseph-kosinski-and-jerry-bruckheimer-on-f1-the-movie-interview/">weakness for underdog stories</a>, another trait of the American Dream.
“What’s it like to be at the back, trying to score a win, rather than winning all the time? Who wins all the time in life? Very few people.”
The director isn’t shy about his love for the U.S. Military, an affection that bloomed while preparing for “Maverick.” He spent some time with <a href="https://www.movieguide.org/news-articles/top-gun-maverick-director-calls-the-movies-production-a-dream-come-true.html">real-life soldiers and came away impressed</a>.
“The fact that [servicemen and women] do that for six months or nine months without seeing their families, I was just really blown away by their sacrifice and what they give up to do that job for us…So, I think all of us on the crew walked away with even more respect for all the men and women out there. And that’s another reason we wanted this film to represent them in the best way possible. Because they worked so hard to help us capture all that.”

It’s ironic that the first film to mirror the kind of all-American storytelling “Maverick” offered came from that film’s director. Hollywood traditionally loves to clone successful projects. When “The Blair Witch Project” introduced found-footage storytelling to the masses, we soon saw dozens of lesser copycats.
The “John Wick” franchise paved the way for more hitmen movies.
Yet we haven’t seen a film like “Top Gun: Maverick” for the past three years. Until that film’s director got back to work, that is.
Kosinski may never reach the heights of a Spielberg or Tarantino, and his planned “Maverick” sequel has some mighty big shoes to fill. The director’s knack for knowing what audiences crave and his willingness to deliver sans compromise means we’ll be hearing a lot more from him soon.
He may not stay anonymous for long.

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/tom-cruise">Tom Cruise</a> has received the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/u-s-navy">U.S. Navy</a>’s top civilian honor for “outstanding contributions to the Navy and the Marine Corps” thanks to his work on “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/top-gun">Top Gun</a>” and other military-themed films.
The 62-year-old actor was presented with the Distinguished Public Service Award by U.S. Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro in a ceremony at Longcross Studios near London on Tuesday, as the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/tom-cruise-top-gun-navy-honor-britain-973f508e7d1359f5f473a6697c3e5984">Associated Press</a> reported. The honor came with a medal and certificate.
“I admire all of the servicemen and women,” Cruise said. “I know in life, something that is very true to me, is that is to lead is to serve. And I know that to my core. And I see that in the servicemen and women.”
The U.S. Navy credited the Hollywood star with “[increasing] public awareness and appreciation for our highly trained personnel and the sacrifices they make while in uniform.”
“Top Gun” (1986) depicts Cruise as Lieutenant Pete &#8220;Maverick&#8221; Mitchell, a naval aviator aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. He and LTJG Nick &#8220;Goose&#8221; Bradshaw go on to train at the US Navy&#8217;s Fighter Weapons School at Naval Air Station Miramar in San Diego.
The first film received mixed reviews but went on to become one of the most beloved action dramas of the time. “Top Gun” is a cult classic that earned $357 million worldwide after being produced for just $15 million.

A sequel, “Top Gun: Maverick,” was released in 2022 and absolutely dominated the box office, bringing in close to $1.5 billion worldwide and making it the highest-grossing film of Cruise’s career. 
The Navy said the “Top Gun” sequel “brought nostalgia to older audiences and reinvigorated the minds of newer audience members, effectively targeting a younger audience’s interest in the skill sets and opportunities the Navy can provide.”
Cruise was also recognized for other patriotic roles, including his parts in Born on the Fourth of July (1989) and A Few Good Men (1992). He has also starred in the Mission: Impossible franchise, with the next installment slated to be released in May 2025. 
“Top Gun 3” is in the early stages of being developed for Paramount Pictures.

“Top Gun: Maverick” star <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/hollywood" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Glen Powell</a> has confirmed that a sequel to the hugely successful 2022 film is not only happening, but that a date has been set for filming to get underway.
Speaking on the <a href="https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/daisy-edgar-jones-glen-powell/id827905050?i=1000662962312">“Happy Sad Confused” podcast</a>, the 35-year-old actor remained mostly tight-lipped about the third film in the “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/top-gun">Top Gun”</a> franchise, but did say he has a date for filming.
“I mean, I have a date,” Powell told the host Josh Horowitz.
When pressed by the host for any details regarding the plot line or other information about the next film, the “Top Gun” star replied, “Absolutely not,” and suggested they move on to another topic, the <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/07/23/entertainment/glen-powell-confirms-top-gun-3-is-to-begin-filming-i-have-a-date/?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_campaign=nypost">New York Post</a> noted.

In January, a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/paramount-is-working-on-top-gun-3-with-tom-cruise-report">report surfaced</a> that Paramount Pictures was working on a third “Top Gun” movie with Tom Cruise, but no details were released about who would be involved or when fans can expect it to hit the big screen.
Powell along with “Top Gun” star Cruise and Miles Teller have been questioned about when production will get underway, but little information has been shared so far.
During the “Twisters” star’s appearance at the Sundance Film Festival, Powell said that “there is going to be some fun stuff being announced soon … but it was confidential to me. I talk to [Joseph] Kosinski, Cruise and Jerry [Bruckheimer] all the time.”
“There is stuff happening and it sounds very exciting,” he added. “I don’t know when I’ll be going back … I’m sure there is a jet waiting for me sometime in the future.”

In March, producer Bruckheimer told <a href="https://people.com/jerry-bruckheimer-teases-top-gun-3-praises-tom-cruise-how-hard-he-works-exclusive-8621250">People</a> that, “We <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/03/28/entertainment/tom-cruise-pitched-top-gun-3-storyline-how-he-reacted/">pitched Tom a story he liked.</a> But he’s a very in-demand actor and he’s got a lot of movies lined up, so we have to wait and see.”
Bruckheimer not only produced the original 1986 “Top Gun” film, but the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/top-gun">sequel</a> to “Top Gun” that grossed more domestically than any other movie in 2022 and was genuinely loved by critics and audience members alike, <a href="https://deadline.com/2023/02/top-gun-maverick-rotten-tomatoes-best-film-2022-1235253650/">Deadline</a> noted.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski, the decidedly <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/top-gun-maverick-becomes-studios-highest-earning-film-at-domestic-box-office-in-its-110-year-history">non-woke sequel</a> centers around Cruise’s character “Pete Mitchell, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him,” before he is called back to “Top Gun,” according to <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1745960/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0">IMDb</a>.
The film became one of the top-grossing films of all time, <a href="https://deadline.com/2022/08/top-gun-maverick-1-4-billion-worldwide-box-office-tom-cruise-1235097053/">Deadline</a> noted. Its global success made it Cruise’s first film to ever reach such a milestone.  The success of the movie did not escape the “Jack Reacher” star, who previously took to <a href="https://x.com/TomCruise/status/1541489523485442048?s=20&amp;t=ByFJE-HCPM_waJk-exr3Fw" target="_blank" rel="noopener">social media</a> to thank fans for turning up in droves.

“<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/tom-cruise-and-top-gun-maverick-can-take-another-victory-lap-after-debut-on-paramount" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Top Gun: Maverick</a>” star Glen Powell said now that he’s finally made it in Hollywood as a leading man he’s leaving California to be closer to family and finally graduate. 
Speaking to the <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-features/glen-powell-interview-hit-man-movie-texas-move-1235905159/">Hollywood Reporter</a>, the 35-year-old star said after 15 years living in the “fishbowl,” he’s gotten to “this point in Hollywood” that he can leave, saying it’s like he’s “earned the ability to go back” to his family and home in Texas. Despite his plans to leave Tinseltown, he has no plans to stop making movies and may continue to be involved in the industry.
“The thing that makes me feel in conflict with some parts of this moment is that I like choosing when I’m out in front,” Powell said of his new leading man fame following the romantic comedy “Anyone But You.” “And I’m more than happy to be on a press tour.”
“I love it. I love going on a Jimmy Fallon — you walk out, you sign autographs, you do the whole thing,” he added, noting it’s the “idea that you’re a function here [in Hollywood]” that he finds most uncomfortable.

“Someone will go, ‘Hey, friend, want to come to this guy’s house? Yeah, come over,’” Powell continued. “And then you show up, and suddenly you’re there for, like, someone’s tequila launch and all of a sudden there’s a photographer and you’re like, ‘Wait, what are we doing here?’ And I think you get enough of those that you just want to bring your family as close as possible — or run to them.”
The actor said that for the first time in his whole life, he&#8217;s &#8220;on the radar&#8221; — after struggling for years to get noticed in the movie industry — calling it weird. &#8220;I mean, after ‘Top Gun,’ a guy would literally be wearing a ‘Top Gun’ shirt and I’d be talking to him, and it was clear he had no idea.” 
Despite the fact that he’s finally on every studio’s wish list, Powell said he’s gotten to the point where he’s questioned his relationships and friendships with people in Tinseltown. So, on the advice of fellow Texan and A-list star Matthew McConaughey, he’s decided to move.
“He’s [McConaughey’s] like, ‘Hollywood is the Matrix, man,” Powell said. “You plug in and it’s all fake world.’ He’s like, ‘Then I go to Austin, and I unplug. It’s all real. Those are my friends, that’s my family, my actions matter there.’”
“And he’s right,” he added. “If you’re here, you live in the Matrix all the time, there’s no separation of those worlds. And for me, especially as my parents get older and my niece and nephew are growing up, I want a separation of those worlds.”
Powell also said with the move he plans to finally graduate from the University of Texas in Austin, which has been challenging ever since his career exploded. Still, he’s continued to take a course or two here or there so he can complete his college degree.
“I think it’s really important to my mom and it’s more of an emotional thing for me,” Powell said. “Plus, I’m so close, I can taste it.”

In a post on <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/C66uX3mx3_d/?img_index=8">Instagram</a> shared by both Cruise and the official social media page for the “Top Gun” movies, the 61-year-old actor wrote that, “It’s incredible to look back on the thirty-eight years of ‘Top Gun.’”
“To the fans who have been with us since the start, there wouldn’t be a ‘Top Gun’ Day without you,” he added.
The “Mission Impossible” star’s post included several shots from his 1986 monster movie “Top Gun.”

One photo showed a young Cruise being directed by the movie’s director Tony Scott. In another photo, fans could see what appeared to be inside a hangar at Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego where they filmed the original “Top Gun” movie.
Another snap showed footage of Cruise from the filming of the successful sequel “Top Gun: Maverick,” showing Cruise in character and looking at photos inside the naval air station from the first film.
In a final photo, Cruise donned the famous leather bomber jacket that his character wore in both “Top Gun” movies.
Many fans expressed their opinions in the comments section of the post, with some noting that Cruise is widely credited with saving the movie industry — as the highly-anticipated sequel was the first film after the pandemic to get people back to the theater.
“Thanks for saving the box office during the pandemic, streaming is mediocre,” one person wrote.
Another added, “Happy Top Gun day EVERYONE.”

Its global success made it Cruise’s first film to ever reach such a milestone. Work has begun on “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/top-gun">Top Gun 3</a>,” per a <a href="https://deadline.com/2024/01/top-gun-3-tom-cruise-1235722328/">Deadline</a> report, following the massive success of “Top Gun: Maverick” in 2022.
Despite a gap of 36 years between the first “Top Gun” (1986) and the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/movies">sequel</a>, it became an absolute box office smash and the most lucrative film of actor <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/tom-cruise">Tom Cruise</a>’s long and successful career. It comes as no surprise that Paramount is gearing up for a third installment in hopes of capturing more of that money-making magic. 
The outlet noted that “Maverick” co-writer Ehren Kruger is currently writing a script for the newest “Top Gun” installment. Rumor has it that actors Miles Teller and Glen Powell are involved with the project, and that producers Jerry Bruckheimer and David Ellison are also on board. Joe Kosinski is slated to either direct or produce, according to Deadline.
Cruise is currently shooting “Mission: Impossible 8” for Paramount. The 61-year-old action star also just signed a huge non-exclusive deal with Warner Bros. Discovery to develop and produce theatrical films, as The Daily Wire previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/tom-cruise-inks-deal-with-warner-bros-for-ongoing-movie-partnership">reported</a>.
“Top Gun: Maverick” earned a whopping $1.49 billion at the global box office. It was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won Best Sound. 
It was also named the Best Film of 2022 by the movie review site Rotten Tomatoes. “Maverick” was rated 96% certified fresh from critics out of nearly 500 reviews and achieved a near-perfect 99% fresh audience score.

The Federalist <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/just-say-no-to-woke-top-gun-maverick-crushing-box-office-with-pro-america-messaging-is-a-wake-up-call-for-hollywood">called</a> the “Top Gun” sequel “unabashedly patriotic” and “free of token left-wing social and political propaganda.” Reviewer Elle Reynolds wrote, “The only agenda being pushed is that America is the best country in the world and the men and women who risk their lives to defend her are heroes worthy of our respect.” 
Another surprising detail about the sequel is how it appealed to a range of audiences both young and old.

The seventh installment in the M:I franchise, &#8220;<a href="https://www.boxofficemojo.com/title/tt9603212/?ref_=bo_se_r_1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">M:I-Dead Reckoning Part One</a>,&#8221; has earned $164,626,507 at the domestic box office as of Monday with &#8220;Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny&#8221; bringing in $173,611,344, according to <a href="https://www.boxofficemojo.com/title/tt1462764/?ref_=bo_se_r_1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Box Office Mojo</a>. That puts both films behind the surprise hit of the summer &#8220;<a href="https://www.boxofficemojo.com/title/tt7599146/?ref_=bo_se_r_1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sound of Freedom</a>&#8221; which has earned $177,773,859 as of Monday domestically.
Internationally both films have done better — with the latest &#8220;Mission: Impossible,&#8221; which came out in July, scoring $541 million at the end of the weekend. And Ford&#8217;s reprisal of his famed adventurer&#8217;s role in the fifth installment of the Disney franchise, which hit theaters in early June,  earning $375 million over the same time frame.
Despite those global numbers, the cost of the making the two films in pandemic era (due to delays in release dates and COVID safety measures), means they both had to do better than they have, with experts estimating both will have lost nearly $100 million in their theater runs, according to sources familiar with the financials, <a href="https://variety.com/2023/film/news/indiana-jones-5-mission-impossible-7-box-office-flops-explained-1235690262/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Variety</a> noted.

&#8220;These movies would have been a lot more economical if it weren&#8217;t for COVID,&#8221; Shawn Robbins, chief analyst at Boxoffice Pro told the outlet. &#8220;But even if that meant their budgets were inflated, at the end of the day, these movies cost what they cost and performed how they performed.&#8221;
Sources with knowledge told the outlet Cruise&#8217;s &#8220;M:I-7&#8221; needs to earn $600 million globally in order to break even.
To put the numbers of each of the film&#8217;s into further context, &#8220;Mission: Impossible-Fallout&#8221; in 2018 earned $791 million, not adjusted for inflation. While 2008&#8217;s &#8220;Kingdom of the Crystal Skull&#8221; remains the franchise&#8217;s highest-grossing film after it took in $790 million globally, the outlet noted.
Cruise&#8217;s last film before &#8220;M:I-7&#8221; came out was the smash hit &#8220;Top Gun: Maverick&#8221; from Paramount. It was released in May 2022, and held the honor of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/avatar-sequel-soars-past-top-gun-maverick-globally-to-become-top-grossing-film-of-2022" target="_blank" rel="noopener">top-grossing movie</a> released last year, earning nearly $1.5 billion globally.

In the clip, we hear McQuarrie talking about how the movie&#8217;s &#8220;sense of adventure&#8221; would include an action train sequence, something they had &#8220;always wanted to do.&#8221;
&#8220;We wanted to build upon the previous films,&#8221; the director says. &#8220;And apply all of that knowledge to something practical and real.&#8221;
The footage shows outside shots of Cruise&#8217;s character Ethan Hunt on top of a train and a warehouse where the shell of a train with different train cars was being built to help them create movie magic.
&#8220;We had to build a train if we wanted to destroy it,&#8221; McQuarrie says, noting that the cars had to be able to run on a working &#8220;railroad track.&#8221;

Another voice comes on and explains that there&#8217;s a fight that takes place on top of a moving train going 60 mph through a real valley surrounded by mountains.
There&#8217;s also a shot of a bridge being blown up, as well as information about how the team had to crash the train in order for movie-goers to be &#8220;invested&#8221; in everything these characters go through.
He tells Cruise in one shot, &#8220;You&#8217;ll be chasing the train as it goes off&#8221; the cliff, explaining that it involved &#8220;every single camera&#8221; having one shot to get it right.
&#8220;Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One&#8221; hits theaters July 12. &#8220;With control of the future and the fate of the world at stake, and dark forces from Ethan&#8217;s past closing in, a deadly race around the globe begins,&#8221; the description adds. &#8220;Confronted by a mysterious, all-powerful enemy, Ethan is forced to consider that nothing can matter more than his mission — not even the lives of those he cares about most.&#8221;
At one point in the trailer, Cruise&#8217;s character drives right off the edge of a cliff and soars through the sky without the bike.
Cruise&#8217;s monster box office hit &#8220;Top Gun: Maverick&#8221; released in 2022 and ended up becoming one of the top-grossing films of all time, earning $1.4 billion worldwide, <a href="https://deadline.com/2022/08/top-gun-maverick-1-4-billion-worldwide-box-office-tom-cruise-1235097053/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Deadline</a> previously noted.
The film&#8217;s success worldwide also made it the &#8220;Mission: Impossible&#8221; star’s first movie to ever reach such a milestone. The success of the movie did not escape Cruise, who took to social media to thank fans for turning up in droves.
&#8220;Mission: Impossible 7&#8221; hits theaters July 12. The sequel is still in production and scheduled to hit theaters June 28, 2024, the outlet noted.

‘It’s Time To Pick A Side’: Tom Cruise Posts High-Octane Trailer For ‘Mission: Impossible 7’

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/tom-cruise">Tom Cruise</a> was very on-brand while accepting his 2023 MTV Movies &amp; TV Award Sunday night.
The 60-year-old <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/entertainment">actor</a> won “Best Performance in a Movie” for last year&#8217;s smash hit sequel “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/top-gun">Top Gun: Maverick</a>.” Cruise accepted the honor with a video clip of himself piloting a fighter plane while wearing sunglasses and speaking into a headset. The actor made sure his golden popcorn trophy was inside the plane and visible as he delivered his thanks for the honor, which is determined by audience votes.
&#8220;Thank you so much for this award,&#8221; the “Top Gun” alum said. &#8220;I make these films for you. I love you. I love entertaining you. To know how much you enjoy it, how much you appreciate it, there&#8217;s just no better feeling.&#8221;

Cruise encouraged everyone to see his upcoming action film “Mission: Impossible &#8211; Dead Reckoning Part One,” which debuts in theaters on July 12. The actor described the project as a &#8220;wild ride.&#8221;
“You have a wonderful summer. Thank you again for letting me entertain you. It&#8217;s an absolute privilege. We&#8217;ll see you at the movies,&#8221; the actor concluded. 
Other nominees in the &#8220;Best Performance&#8221; category included: Austin Butler (“Elvis”), Florence Pugh (“Don&#8217;t Worry Darling”), Keke Palmer (“Nope”), and Michael B. Jordan (“Creed III”).
“Top Gun: Maverick” had the most nominations for MTV movie awards this year. In the TV categories, “Stranger Things” and “The Last of Us” also had six nominations. This year’s awards were supposed to be live and in person with Drew Barrymore as host, but producers had to make a last-minute change due to the ongoing Hollywood writer’s strike.
“Maverick” grossed more than $1.4 billion at the global box office and more than $690 million domestically after three months in theaters, making it one of the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/tom-cruise-jumps-from-helicopter-to-thank-fans-who-saw-top-gun-maverick-in-theaters-honor-of-a-lifetime">highest-grossing movies</a> of all time, Variety reported.

Cruise filmed a special thank you for fans and jumped out of a helicopter over South Africa in December 2022. While audience scores for the film remained high, critics were less favorable in their reviews. The movie was nominated for three Academy Awards but only won Best Sound in what was considered a major snub by the industry. Cruise did not attend the Oscars ceremony in March.
