Actor Tim Allen recently criticized DEI constraints on television shows, saying sitcoms need to be funny to succeed.
The 72-year-old “Home Improvement” alum made the comments during an appearance on Bill Maher’s “Club Random” podcast on Monday. 
Allen suggested to Maher that DEI policies should not come at the expense of the show’s quality.
“My wife says, ‘Why do you keep saying that?’ And I said, ‘Somebody told me I was like the Tom Brady of sitcoms.’ When they asked me to do a third [show], I said, ‘I thought they were kidding,’” the comedian told Maher. “I don’t know whether my generation… because all the people that I know that I would make it with are either dead or not the right gender, you know, they’re all light-skinned European older men. And that doesn’t fit the DEI thing that everybody wanted. They wanted, you know, a potpourri of —”
Maher jumped in, saying one solution was to have “DEI in the cast.”
“I didn’t want to get into that. I didn’t want to patronize people. If you’re going to do a sitcom, it’s just got to be funny. You got to have some drama,” Allen went on.

The podcast host agreed, saying diversity wasn’t the “only virtue.”
“Not everything in America has to look like Angelina Jolie’s Christmas card, you know, sometimes, and it’s always OK in reverse. It’s like if there’s something where it’s just an all-black cast — and good, I’m all for it. I’m not complaining about it,” Maher continued.
The host went on to question CBS&#8217;s 2020 <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2020/11/09/cbs-reality-shows-must-now-have-50percent-non-white-casts-network-says.html">goal</a> of increasing BIPOC representation in its writers&#8217; rooms. 
“I thought, what if the show they’re writing is about a polka band in a ski town?” Maher said.
“I love people of color, and I’m so glad that things are better than they used to be for people of color, but you know, it shouldn’t intrude on the creative process to the degree it has in this town,” Maher said. “It has intruded on the creative process. And by the way, lots of people of color agree with that because they want the creative process to be pure, too.”
Allen currently stars in the CBS sitcom “Shifting Gears,” which follows a father trying to reconnect with his adult daughter. Besides appearing on the well-known ‘90s series “Home Improvement,” he also starred in the popular ABC sitcom “Last Man Standing” (2011-2017).

“Home Improvement” star Tim Allen said Erika Kirk’s emotional eulogy at her late husband’s memorial service moved him so deeply that he found the strength to forgive the man who killed his father.
Erika gave an incredible tribute last weekend to Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, her husband of four years, who was assassinated during a speaking event at Utah Valley University on September 10. She spoke about his deep faith and told the estimated 100 million people watching that she forgave Tyler Robinson, the man accused of killing her husband.
“When Erika Kirk spoke the words on the man who killed her husband — ‘That man … that young man … I forgive him’ — that moment deeply affected me,” Allen wrote on X on Thursday.

“I have struggled for over 60 years to forgive the man who killed my Dad. I will say those words now as I type: ‘I forgive the man who killed my father.’ Peace be with you all,” the 72-year-old actor continued.
Allen’s father, Gerald, lost his life in 1964 when a drunk driver veered across the median and struck him. Allen was just 11 years old at the time.
In a 2011 <a href="https://www.esquire.com/entertainment/interviews/a11239/tim-allen-quotes-1111/">interview</a> with Esquire, Allen said he’s “never gotten over” his father’s death.

“As children, your world is yours. That day taught me that it’s really not your world. Somebody else is in control — fate, God, whatever it is. It is not your show,” he said at the time. “And the show can be brutal. Brutal in its coldness. Brutal in its love and affection. Sh** can hit you straight between the eyes, and you never saw it coming.”
Allen also said the accident tested his relationship with God. 
“It changed everything forever,” the actor said during an <a href="https://www.aarp.org/entertainment/television/tim-allen-now-last-man-standing/">interview</a> with AARP in 2012. “Part of me still doesn’t trust that things are going to work out all right. I knew my father was dead, but I was never satisfied with why he was dead. I wanted answers that minute from God. ‘Do you think this is funny? Do you think this is necessary?’ And I’ve had a tumultuous relationship with my creator ever since.”
During her eulogy, Erika told the crowd that Charlie “wanted to save young men, just like the one who took his life.”
“Our Savior said, ‘Father, forgive them, for they not know what they do.’ That young man … I forgive him,” the grieving widow said. “I forgive him because it was what Christ did, and it’s what Charlie would do.”
The comments on Allen’s X post were filled with support and commiseration.

Actor <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/tim-allen">Tim Allen</a> announced that he has finished reading the Old Testament of the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/bible">Bible</a> and is excited to start on the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/christianity">New Testament</a>.
The 71-year-old sitcom star shared the update on X on Saturday. 
“After nearly a year I have finished entire Old Testament and the experience of re reading, dedicated focus and no drifting has made this a humbling overwhelming experience. What a treasure,” Allen wrote, adding that he was “three days” into reading the second part.

The actor previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/so-far-amazing-tim-allen-reacts-to-reading-the-bible">shared an update</a> in August, writing, “Never took the time in all my years to ever read and really read the Bible. “It originally had a lot of otherworldly characters, and ghosts, and goblins. I said no, this is Christ-mas. It’s Christ-mas. It literally is a religious holiday,” Allen told the outlet. “We don’t have to blow trumpets, but I do want you to acknowledge it. That’s what this is about. If you want to get into Santa Claus, you’re gonna have to go back to history, and it’s all about religion.”

The trailer for a new <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/tim-allen">Tim Allen</a> sitcom called “Shifting Gears” just dropped, getting fans excited to see the 71-year-old&#8217;s return to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/television">television</a>.
The new series will premiere on <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/abc">ABC</a> on January 8. Per the show’s <a href="https://www.dgepress.com/abc/shows/shifting-gears/">description</a>, Allen stars as Matt, “the stubborn, widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop. When Matt’s estranged daughter Riley (Kat Dennings) and her kids move into his house, the real restoration begins.”
“Shifting Gears” will be a return to ABC for Allen, who is best known for starring on the sitcom “Home Improvement” in the 1990s and more recently in “Last Man Standing.” The latter series was canceled in 2017 after six seasons but then moved to Fox and aired for three more seasons. 
Other cast members include Seann William Scott as Gabriel and Daryl “Chill” Mitchell as Stitch. Riley’s two children, Carter and Georgia, are played by Maxwell Simkins and Barrett Margolis.

Riley gets out with her kids and says, &#8220;Hey Dad,&#8221; to which Allen replies, &#8220;And there is the thief!&#8221;
Back at Matt&#8217;s house, he recalls how when Riley left, she &#8220;looked back and gave me the double bird.&#8221; Riley responds, &#8220;I was 18 — the double bird is how I ended all our conversations.&#8221;
&#8220;I&#8217;m crawling home because I&#8217;m broke and need a place to stay until I figure out what the rest of my life looks like,&#8221; Riley tells her dad.
&#8220;You guys can stay here,&#8221; he says. Riley replies, &#8220;Really? Because I haven&#8217;t changed a lot!&#8221;
“Neither have I!” Matt says.
Other scenes indicate that their relationship rebuilding won’t be easy. &#8220;Can we try to talk to each other like rational adults?&#8221; Riley asks her dad. Matt quips, &#8220;Have you watched the news lately? That&#8217;s not a thing anymore.&#8221;
Most of the comments on the trailer express excitement over the project. 
“So happy to see Tim Allen and Kat Dennings back in another sitcom and I love the fact that both are working together. I’m definitely gonna be tuning in to watch this sitcom cause two of my favorite people are in it,” one YouTube commenter wrote.

The 70-year-old actor/comedian took to <a href="https://twitter.com/ofctimallen/status/1765534612665909483?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet">X</a> on Thursday and wrote, &#8220;We are at it again! ABC just ordered a comedy pilot, &#8216;Shifting Gears.'&#8221; His post included a link to an article about the project in <a href="https://variety.com/2024/tv/news/tim-allen-abc-comedy-pilot-shifting-gears-1235932503/">Variety</a> magazine.
Allen is pegged to not only star in the multicamera comedy but also be an executive producer for the pilot with the current working title &#8220;Shifting Gears,&#8221; the outlet noted.
In the pilot, Allen plays Matt, a &#8220;stubborn, widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop. When Matt&#8217;s estranged daughter and her teenage kids move into his house, the real restoration begins,&#8221; a project description reads.

The &#8220;Toy Story&#8221; star appeared on ABC for six years, from 2011 to 2017, in his sitcom &#8220;Last Man Standing.&#8221; Allen played a conservative father in a female-dominated household. In 2017, the network suddenly canceled the show despite its incredible rating success, as The <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/why-last-man-standing-was-canceled-tim-allen-responds-1004414/">Hollywood Reporter</a> noted.
&#8220;Last Man Standing&#8221; then found a new home and moved to Fox in 2018, where the series ran until 2021.
Before that, it was at ABC where Allen got his breakthrough role in entertainment when he landed the part of Tim &#8220;The Toolman&#8221; Taylor on the hugely successful sitcom &#8220;Home Improvement,&#8221; which ran from 1991 to 1999.
It was focused on &#8220;the daily trials and tribulations of Tim &#8216;The Tool Man&#8217; Taylor, a television show host raising three mischievous boys with help from his loyal co-host, loving wife, and eccentric neighbor,&#8221; according to <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101120/">IMDb</a>.
Variety noted that Allen&#8217;s most recent project for the Disney-backed network is with Disney+ for &#8220;The Santa Clauses&#8221; series, in which he stars and executive produces.

Allen&#8217;s comments came only hours after Iger announced that the studio was currently developing sequels for &#8220;Frozen,&#8221; &#8220;Toy Story,&#8221; and &#8220;Zootopia, as previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/disney-gets-mixed-reactions-after-announcing-new-toy-story-frozen-and-zootopia-sequels-coming-soon">reported</a>.
<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/tim-allen-finally-weighs-in-on-lightyear-says-theres-no-relationship-to-buzz-and-famed-character">Allen</a> previously broke his silence on Evans voicing the iconic spaceman in the origin-based film. He said there&#8217;s &#8220;no connection&#8221; to his famed character in the animated franchise, though he wished there was.
&#8220;The short answer is I&#8217;ve stayed out of this because it has nothing to do [with my character],&#8221; he said. &#8220;This is a whole new team that really had nothing to do with the first movies.&#8221;

Actor and comedian Tim Allen suggested that former costar Pamela Anderson&#8217;s memory wasn&#8217;t terribly accurate during a recent Starbucks run.
The Daily Mail <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11692459/Tim-Allen-hits-Pamela-Andersons-claim-flashed-her.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">published</a> Allen&#8217;s comments in a Monday article, noting that &#8220;The Santa Clause&#8221; actor was speaking in response to Anderson&#8217;s bombshell claim that he had once flashed her on the set of &#8220;Home Improvement.&#8221;
&#8220;She was a great co-worker, I&#8217;ll tell you that. She&#8217;s a fun girl. Everybody loved her, but everybody at ABC is a little disappointed in her … memory, put it that way. All of us at Disney/ABC, really,&#8221; Allen said.
&#8220;She&#8217;s a good girl.&#8221; Allen said again before getting in his car to drive away — at which point the reporter asked whether he had a good memory. His answer was a flat &#8220;yeah.&#8221;
<a href="https://dailywire.com/news/pamela-anderson-drops-bombshell-claim-on-tim-allen-he-says-it-never-happened/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Anderson&#8217;s claim</a> was revealed in an excerpt of her upcoming memoir, &#8220;Love, Pamela,&#8221; which is due out on Tuesday — and she claimed that he had exposed himself to her during her first day on the &#8220;Home Improvement&#8221; set. She said he had done it in an effort to somehow level the playing field, as he had seen her nude photos in Playboy magazine.
&#8220;On the first day of filming, I walked out of my dressing room, and Tim was in the hallway in his robe. He opened his robe and flashed me quickly — completely naked underneath. He said it was only fair, because he had seen me naked. Now we’re even. I laughed uncomfortably,&#8221; she wrote in the memoir.
Allen said at the time that her claim was false, releasing a statement flatly denying it: &#8220;No, it never happened. I would never do such a thing.&#8221;
Anderson later <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/pamela-anderson-doubles-down-in-the-face-of-tim-allens-denial-it-should-never-have-happened/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">doubled down</a>, adding, &#8220;This true story is just one of many surreal and uncomfortable situations I learned to navigate. My book goes into how it made me feel over the course of my life and, in this case, my career. I have no ill will toward Tim. But like the rest, it should never have happened.&#8221;
She went on to allege that over the years, she had encountered a number of men who had felt justified in treating her differently because she had posed for Playboy.
&#8220;It was the first of many bizarre encounters where people felt they knew me enough to make absolute fools out of themselves,&#8221; she said.

Former &#8220;Baywatch&#8221; star Pamela Anderson is not letting go of her claim that comedian and actor Tim Allen once flashed her on the set of &#8220;Home Improvement&#8221; — a claim that he has flatly denied.
Anderson defended Allen on Thursday in a <a href="https://variety.com/2023/tv/features/pamela-anderson-interview-abuse-boyfriends-pam-and-tommy-backlash-1235501556/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">new statement</a> provided to entertainment site Variety, saying that as a comedian it was Allen&#8217;s job to cross lines and push things to the limit.
&#8220;Tim is a comedian, it’s his job to cross the line. I’m sure he had no bad intentions. Times have changed, though. I doubt anyone would try that post #MeToo. It’s a new world,&#8221; Anderson told Variety via text.
Anderson dropped the <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/pamela-anderson-drops-bombshell-claim-on-tim-allen-he-says-it-never-happened/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bombshell claim</a> in her upcoming memoir, &#8220;Love, Pamela&#8221; — which is due out on January 31 — and she said that Allen had exposed himself to her on her first day on the &#8220;Home Improvement&#8221; set. She asserted that he had seen her nude photos in Playboy magazine, and flashing her was an awkward attempt to — as she explained it — level the playing field.

Allen issued a statement unequivocally denying that the incident ever happened, saying, &#8220;No, it never happened. I would never do such a thing.&#8221;
Another of Anderson&#8217;s bombshell claims — this one from her upcoming Netflix documentary &#8220;Pamela: A Love Story&#8221; — has earned her a <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/new-pamela-anderson-claim-targets-sylvester-stallone-he-says-its-false-and-fabricated/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rebuttal</a> from &#8220;Rocky&#8221; actor Sylvester Stallone.
In the doc, also due out on January 31, Anderson claimed that Stallone propositioned her — offering her a condo and a Porsche if she would commit to being his &#8220;Number one girl.&#8221;
&#8220;He offered me a condo and a Porsche to be his ‘number one girl.’ And I was like, ‘Does that mean there’s No. 2? Uh-uh,’” Anderson said. &#8220;He goes, ‘That’s the best offer you’re gonna get, honey. You’re in Hollywood now.’”
Anderson insisted that she immediately turned the offer down, saying that she didn&#8217;t want to settle for anything less than being in love — but Stallone released a statement via a spokesperson saying that he never made her any such offer.
&#8220;The statement from Pamela Anderson attributed to my client is false and fabricated. Mr. Stallone confirms that he never made any portion of that statement,&#8221; the statement read.

Actor and comedian <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/tim-allen" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tim Allen</a> has adamantly denied former &#8220;Baywatch&#8221; star Pamela Anderson&#8217;s assertion that he flashed her during the early days of &#8220;Home Improvement&#8221; — but a blooper video from the hit sitcom suggests he may have &#8220;flashed&#8221; another costar.
In the clip, published on Tuesday by entertainment site TMZ, Allen was wearing a kilt — which he raised briefly to the shock of costar and onscreen wife Patricia Richardson. She later said that he had been wearing clothing under the kilt — and the incident apparently took place while they were filming in front of a live studio audience.

&#8220;You got the legs for this,&#8221; Richardson joked as Allen modeled the kilt. &#8220;Hangs long, I just wish it was shorter.&#8221;
Allen responded by lifting the front of the kilt almost to his shoulders, laughing along with the studio audience as Richardson&#8217;s jaw dropped in surprise.
The actress told TMZ that Allen had been &#8220;well dressed&#8221; under the Scottish garb, however. &#8220;People ask me what was under the kilt when he flashed me, he was well dressed under there, I was just shocked that he lifted the kilt, not by a man in boxer shorts,&#8221; she said.
Allen&#8217;s name came up in recent days after Variety <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/pamela-anderson-drops-bombshell-claim-on-tim-allen-he-says-it-never-happened/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">published an excerpt</a> of Anderson&#8217;s new book, &#8220;Love, Pamela&#8221; — in which she claimed the comedian had opened his robe, flashing her on the set of &#8220;Home Improvement&#8221; in 1991. In the excerpt <a href="https://variety.com/2023/tv/news/pam-anderson-tim-allen-flashed-penis-home-improvement-1235498326/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">provided to Variety</a>, Anderson claimed that <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/tim-allen-cracks-14-word-dad-joke-about-bidens-latest-interview-and-lefty-twitter-is-mad/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Allen</a> had intentionally opened his robe on the set, which she said was an attempt to even the score since he had seen her naked in Playboy magazine.

Anderson also addressed the now-infamous sex tape — which was stolen from the home she shared with Lee and then sold.

The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/tim-allen">69-year-old actor</a> said that as a comedian he never means to hurt anyone with his jokes and that it&#8217;s all meant to &#8220;make them laugh,&#8221; <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/tim-allen-addresses-current-state-of-comedy">Fox News</a> reported.
&#8220;I got into this business because of my college attraction to Lenny Bruce and eventually late college I saw Richard Pryor in concert and George Carlin,&#8221; Allen explained. &#8220;You never thought of what they were doing as infuriating people to make them laugh.&#8221;
&#8220;Nowadays, you know, I don&#8217;t think they would be allowed to say that,&#8221; he added. &#8220;So, that&#8217;s the saddest thing in the world to me. That everything is OK as long as I&#8217;m not being offended.&#8221;

&#8220;The Santa Clause&#8221; star said what he does is &#8220;lie to tell the truth. That&#8217;s what comedy is about. You&#8217;re overextending yourself so that people go, &#8216;S***, that is weird.'&#8221;
He also said he hopes attacking comedians is just a phase that will end.
&#8220;I don&#8217;t get anybody, hopefully, getting mad enough to hurt me or yell out screaming in my big concerts,&#8221; Allen said. &#8220;Comedy isn&#8217;t about hurting people, it&#8217;s herding – get everybody together to laugh at this thing. If you get hurt by it, that&#8217;s unfortunate.&#8221;
The &#8220;Toy Story&#8221; star, an open Republican, also hasn&#8217;t hidden his thoughts about &#8220;woke&#8221; culture.
In October, Allen trolled those he labeled &#8220;wokees&#8221; as he <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/tim-allen-trolls-wokees-asks-the-question-everyone-is-wondering-about-this-group">tweeted</a> &#8220;Who is the face of woke?&#8221;
&#8220;Do wokees have a club house in someone&#8217;s backyard or maybe a cute yet safe playpen somewhere?&#8221; the &#8220;Last Man Standing&#8221; star tweeted to his hundreds of thousands of followers.
Earlier this year, the superstar actor appeared to take a swipe at Disney&#8217;s pro-LGBTQIA+ programming when he tweeted about his latest trip to its famous theme park in southern California.
