WASHINGTON—In a stunning show of executive authority, President Donald Trump today exercised the power granted to him under Article II, Section 2 of the United States Constitution “to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offenses against the United States.”
The lucky duck was a turkey named Gobble. Unlike in previous years, those assembled in the Rose Garden on this drizzly Tuesday morning knew which bird would be spared right away: First Lady Melania Trump’s office asked Americans to choose which bird her husband would pardon, and he alone was present at Tuesday’s ceremony.
Gathered on the dais were a who’s-who of the Trump Cabinet: Vice President JD Vance with his wife, Usha, and their children; Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Education Secretary Linda McMahon, FBI Director Kash Patel, and Attorney General Pam Bondi.
“This is a big day, a pardon day for a very important beast,” Trump said, prompting a gobble from Gobble. “That’s a well-trained turkey. See how happy he is?”
At one point during the event, Weather Report’s 1977 jazz fusion hit “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqashW66D7o" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Birdland</a>” played over the Rose Garden speakers, a clever musical wink for those who caught the tune.
Trump joked that when he first saw a picture of Gobble and runner-up Waddle, he wanted to “call them Chuck and Nancy,” a reference to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

“But then I realized I wouldn’t pardon those two people. I would never pardon them, I don’t care what Melania would tell me.”
Schumer and Pelosi weren’t the only Democrats to draw a presidential jab at the ceremony. Touting his administration’s success in cracking down on crime in Washington and Memphis, Trump called on Illinois Governor JB Pritzker to allow them to do the same in Chicago.
“Governor Pritzker, if you’re listening, let’s get your act together,” Trump said before noting that he would not “talk about the fact that he’s a fat slob.”
“I don’t mention it,” Trump said, adding that “I’d like to lose a few pounds.”
“But I’m not gonna lose it on Thanksgiving, I’ll tell you that. Because I’m gonna have a turkey, but it’s not gonna be that one.”
Trump also joked that all of President Joe Biden’s turkey pardons were null and void because his predecessor signed them with an autopen — but that he intervened to spare last year’s turkeys, Peach and Blossom, from the slaughterhouse.

Waddle, who Trump joked was “missing in action,” also received a presidential pardon and will step up as the National Thanksgiving Turkey should Gobble be unable to discharge his duties.
“Gobble, you’re pardoned!” the president said, evoking his famous television catch phrase.
About an hour before the pardon, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt ushered Waddle into the briefing room to meet the White House press corps. Leavitt stood by with her son (wearing a “Mama’s Little Turkey” shirt) as an excited press pool shouted questions at Waddle.
One journalist immediately asked if Waddle had a comment on Ukraine. The turkey had no comment.

After departing the White House grounds today, Gobble and Waddle will return to their home state of North Carolina, where they will take up residence at NC State University alongside Chocolate and Chip, the turkeys Biden pardoned in 2022.
Alex Davidson, Senior Director of Public Affairs at the National Turkey Federation, said that Gobble and Waddle will be “agricultural ambassadors for the rest of their lives.”
Davidson also gave The Daily Wire the inside scoop on how the turkeys are selected. Every year, the National Turkey Federation’s rotating chairman designates a state from which the turkeys will hail — generally the chairman’s home state. The current chair, Butterball CEO Jay Jandrain, picked North Carolina, “the second largest turkey state in the country, after Minnesota,” Davidson says.
This year’s presidential flock was raised by Travis and Amanda Pittman of Wayne County (“I like Wayne County,” Trump remarked when thanking the Pitmans, noting that he did well there in the last election).
Davidson says that presidential turkeys are selected at a young age and raised just like any other bird, though they are given early exposure to lights and music to prepare them for the hustle and bustle of the national stage.
As pardon day gets closer, the flock of around 50 birds is whittled down to two finalists. According to the National Turkey Federation, the <a href="https://www.eatturkey.org/presidentialflock/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">winning turkeys</a> are those that have the best “physical appearance and temperament,” proof that looks matter, even in Washington.
Trump also touted the cost of turkey and other Thanksgiving foods. Turkey prices are down 16% from last year, according to a <a href="https://www.fb.org/news-release/cost-of-thanksgiving-dinner-declines" target="_blank" rel="noopener">new report </a>from the American Farm Bureau Federation. All told, the cost of an average Thanksgiving dinner is down 5% from 2024.
It’s generally held that Abraham Lincoln performed the first turkey pardon when he spared a bird at the request of his son, Tad. But the turkey pardon really traces its roots back to 1947, when the National Turkey Federation sent a 47-pound bird to President Harry Truman, a <a href="https://www.npr.org/2025/11/25/nx-s1-5620579/turkey-presidential-pardon" target="_blank" rel="noopener">peace offering</a> after the group sparred with the White House over postwar poultry rationing.
John F. Kennedy is said to have given the first presidential <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/other/presidential-turkey-pardons-not-long-history-you-might-think-f2D11663410" target="_blank" rel="noopener">turkey pardon</a>, remarking “we’ll just let this one grow.” But as with most good things in Washington, the pardon tradition really took shape under Ronald Reagan.
After being grilled about pardons for those involved in the Iran-Contra scandal during a 1987 press conference with Charlie the Turkey, the <a href="https://www.reaganlibrary.gov/archives/speech/informal-exchange-reporters-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gipper quipped</a> that, had he not been assured Charlie would head to a children’s farm, he “would have pardoned him.”
Since 1989, turkeys have been pardoned in an official White House ceremony, a tradition begun by President George H.W. Bush. Today, the pardon is just a high point in a long series of events for the turkeys, who are brought to Washington a few days early to make the rounds with the media. Gobble and Waddle reportedly did 20 interviews on Monday, before turning in for a night at the Willard InterContinental Hotel.
The hotel staff loves when the turkeys check in, Davidson says — and apparently the fowl are not that foul, as far as these things go. The National Turkey Federation prepares their swanky suite with layers of plastic and wood chips, and federation staffers clean up after the birds head up to Pennsylvania Avenue.
“We leave it like we found it,” Davidson said.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Sunday that the Trump administration’s economic strategy is centered on fixing “the three I&#8217;s: immigration, interest rates, and inflation,&#8221; adding that Americans are traumatized by Biden-era inflation.
“One thing we’re not going to do is what the Biden administration did — tell the American people they don’t know how they feel,” Bessent said. “They are traumatized by Biden-era inflation. We’ve slowed it, and we’re working very hard to bring it down.”
Bessent argued that immigration has been a major driver of high housing costs and wage stagnation. With the border closed and deportations underway, he expects home prices to fall and wages to rise. He pointed to October’s strong housing data as evidence, with home sales reaching their highest level in three years.
“The prices get better,” he said. “Energy prices, gasoline are down, we believe health care is going to come down. This will be the lowest cost for a Thanksgiving dinner in four years. Turkey prices are down 16%.”
While inflation ticked up to 3% from its 2.3% low earlier this year, Bessent insisted it remains under control. He noted that Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell has lowered interest rates by 0.50% this year and have another rate cut on the table for December.
Bessent credited the president’s peace agreements, tax reforms, and new trade deals as key drivers of future affordability. His remarks come days after Vice President JD Vance called on Americans to have “a little bit of patience” with the Trump administration’s economic strategy.

Recent criticism has focused on rising prices for certain food products. NBC’s Kristen Welker asked Scott Bessent if the administration’s rollback on tariffs proves Trump’s trade policies are raising consumer costs.
Bessent dismissed the argument, saying inflation “is a composite number” with many moving parts, meaning overall inflation can remain stable even as some products fluctuate. He predicted broader price declines once United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer finalizes new agreements in Latin America.
He also pointed to last week’s rollback on tariffs for more than 200 food products as proof that the White House is “pushing down the prices they can control,” rejecting claims that tariffs hurt consumers.
“Some prices will come down in weeks, some in months,” he said.
With major trade deals nearing completion, foreign peace negotiations wrapping up, and the One Big, Beautiful Bill tax reforms in place, Bessent said he is “optimistic for 2026.”

But Americans should be prepared for long lines and crowded terminals as the FAA expects the busiest Thanksgiving travel week since 2010.
Tuesday, November 25, will be the busiest travel day before Thanksgiving, with 52,185 forecasted flights, the FAA <a href="https://www.faa.gov/newsroom/faa-expects-busiest-thanksgiving-travel-period-15-years">said</a> on Friday. Sunday, November 30, will be the busiest travel day after the holiday, with 51,268 forecasted flights. Some storm systems could also affect air travel. Forecasts call for rain in the Northeast, while wind and rain could move into the Great Lakes region and Seattle around Thanksgiving Day, according to the FAA.
A total of 82 million Americans are expected to travel at least 50 miles from their homes for the Thanksgiving holiday, which is an increase of 1.6 million travelers compared to last Thanksgiving, according to <a href="https://newsroom.aaa.com/2025/11/aaa-thanksgiving-travel-forecast-2025/">AAA</a>. Seventy-three million Americans are expected to travel by car for the holiday, while six million Americans are expected to travel by air.
The busy travel week comes as the airline industry seeks to get back into a normal rhythm after the record-breaking 43-day government shutdown caused numerous disruptions. On Monday, the FAA lifted its temporary flight restrictions that affected 40 of the busiest airports in the country, and normal operations resumed.
“Thanks to the dedication of our air traffic controllers and every FAA employee, we are ready for the holiday rush and take pride in helping travelers reach their friends and families during this important time of year,” said FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford. “I am deeply grateful to our entire FAA team. Even through a period of record-high traffic, their unwavering commitment keeps the system running safely.”

The government shutdown resulted in an air traffic controller shortage as many controllers called in sick to either stay home or look for other work as they missed paychecks. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said on Thursday that 776 air traffic controllers and technicians who remained on the job and showed up to work every day during the government shutdown received $10,000 bonus checks.
&#8220;President Trump wanted to give air traffic controllers and technicians BONUSES for showing up to work EVERY DAY during the government shutdown… and TODAY IS THE DAY!&#8221; Duffy wrote. &#8220;776 patriotic men and women will get $10K checks, just in time for Christmas. The Trump administration wants to bring &#8220;civility&#8221; back to air travel through their &#8220;The Golden Age Of Travel Starts With You&#8221; campaign. One way they offer pertains to passenger attire.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy wants travelers to ask themselves: are you dressing with respect?
&#8220;People dress up like they&#8217;re going to bed when they fly,&#8221; <a href="https://x.com/SecDuffy/status/1991334266974658936?s=20">Duffy said</a>. &#8220;We want to push people as we come into a really busy travel season, help people out, be in a good mood, dress up.&#8221;
In the campaign video released by the U.S. Department of Transportation, passengers are shown from previous decades flying in business suits and dresses, before showing the modern day jet setter in pajamas, sweatpants, and in some cases even bare feet. The passengers from the past showed courtesy, while the present-day passengers were seen fighting with each other on the plane.
&#8220;Things aren&#8217;t what they used to be,&#8221; Duffy said. &#8220;Let&#8217;s bring civility and manners back.&#8221;
Duffy has a checklist of questions he said will help put friendliness back in the skies.
1. &#8220;Are you helping a pregnant woman put her bag in the overhead bin?&#8221;
2. &#8220;Are you dressing with respect?&#8221;
3. &#8220;Are you keeping control of your children?&#8221;
4. &#8220;Are you saying &#8216;thank you&#8217; to your flight attendants and pilots?&#8221;
5. &#8220;Are you saying &#8216;please&#8217; and &#8216;thank you&#8217; in general?&#8221;
To put it simply, Duffy said &#8220;manners don&#8217;t stop at the gate.&#8221;
But research shows &#8220;class&#8221; is only being used as a seating designation instead of a character trait.
In-flight outbursts have seen a 400% increase since 2019, according to the FAA. These can range from disrupting the peace to violence.

In 2021 alone, the FAA reported 5,973 unruly passengers. The return to the skies post-COVID saw the most chaos with six times the amount of unruly passengers in 2021 versus 2020. In 2024, the amount of uncontrollable passengers was double what was reported in 2019.
&#8220;The campaign is intended to jumpstart a nationwide conversation around how we can all restore courtesy and class to air travel,&#8221; the DOT announcement said. &#8220;This won’t just make the travel experience better for the flying public – it will ensure the safety of passengers, gate workers, flight attendants, and pilots.&#8221;
Duffy is eager to improve the flying experience during its busiest time of the year. AAA projected 81.8 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home over the Thanksgiving holiday this year from November 25 to December 1.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned Americans on Sunday that if the government shutdown persists, air travel over the rapidly approaching holidays is likely to be marked by lengthy delays and mass cancellations at airports all across the United States.
Duffy spoke with anchor Shannon Bream on &#8220;Fox News Sunday,&#8221; where he reiterated the fact that his number one priority was to make sure that whatever air travel did take place was as safe as possible — and said that with a growing number of air traffic controllers missing work because their pay was being withheld, the only way to keep the skies safe was to limit the number of planes leaving the ground.

ABC News transportation correspondent Gio Benitez spoke with &#8220;This Week&#8221; anchor George Stephanopoulos and he said that thousands of flights had already been delayed or canceled in the last few days alone — and that was only expected to get worse in the coming days. Benitez quoted a former TSA official as saying that the current landscape was simply &#8220;the calm before the storm.&#8221;

For years after that, many remembered those first difficult days in a new land and the years of plenty that followed — and also thanked God for rewarding their labor. But it was not until 1789, when that new land had a name and a new leader, that Thanksgiving officially became an American holiday.

Washington went on to lay out that which he believed the American people should be praying for, beginning with forgiveness for &#8220;our national and other transgressions&#8221; and extending to continued safety and prosperity, not only for the newly-formed United States, but for &#8220;all Sovereigns and Nations.&#8221;

The official date for the Thanksgiving holiday changed from year to year until President Abraham Lincoln, in 1863, designated the last Thursday in November to be the permanent day of celebration. Only one president since — Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1939 — has deviated from that schedule, opting to move the holiday from November 30 to November 23 in order to extend the Christmas shopping season.

President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/joe-biden" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Joe Biden</a> complained about the media reporting &#8220;bad news&#8221; while he spoke to reporters during his final <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/thanksgiving" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Thanksgiving</a> as commander in chief.
Biden made the comment while in Nantucket, Massachusetts, after being asked to share his message to Americans who are worried about the future this holiday season. Though he insisted reporters have a &#8220;really tough job&#8221; and claimed that he was not criticizing them, Biden indicated that <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2024-election/two-thirds-voters-say-country-wrong-track-ahead-2024-election-rcna172873" target="_blank" rel="noopener">polls</a> <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/07/16/us-news/majority-of-american-voters-say-country-is-heading-in-wrong-direction-poll/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">showing</a> most Americans believe the country is heading in the wrong direction could be pinned on the press.

The 82-year-old Biden is wrapping up his time in the White House after his vice president, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/kamala-harris" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kamala Harris</a>, lost to President-elect Donald Trump in the 2024 election earlier this month. Biden had been running for a second term but, after a fumbling debate performance, dropped out in July under pressure from allies raising concerns about his age, mental acuity, and electability.

Police in New York City arrested about 20 people on Thursday after anti-Israel protesters tried to stop the 98th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Protesters interrupted the parade by jumping in front of the Ronald McDonald balloon, stopping it before police in the area converged on and arrested them, according to the <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/11/28/us-news/mass-arrests-at-macys-thanksgiving-day-parade-as-anti-israel-protesters-block-path/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New York Post</a>. The protest, booed loudly by onlookers, marked the second consecutive year anti-Israel demonstrators have obstructed the parade route.
Videos of the protest circulating on social media showed protesters lined across the street with a banner that said “Don’t celebrate genocide” and called for an arms embargo against the Jewish state. The protesters can be heard shouting “free, free Palestine.”

The disruption delayed the parade for about five minutes, according to <a href="https://abc7ny.com/post/21-pro-palestinian-protesters-arrested-nypd-after-briefly-stopping-macys-thanksgiving-day-parade/15599111/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ABC 7</a>. Formal charges against the protesters arrested are still pending.
New York City Democratic Mayor Eric Adams warned against protesting the parade on Wednesday.
“I really want to take the moment to tell those grinches that believe they are going to disrupt the parade that it is not going to happen,” Adams <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/11/27/us-news/mayor-eric-adams-calls-thanksgiving-parade-protesters-grinches-vows-no-tolerance-for-interruptions/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. “Just like how we responded last year, we are going to be on top of those who attempt to interrupt the parade in any way possible.”
Last year, a group of protesters were <a href="https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/11/28/nyc-pro-palestinian-protesters-temporarily-disrupt-macys-thanksgiving-day-parade/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">arrested</a> at the Macy’s parade after they jumped over barricades and glued their hands to asphalt in the middle of the parade route.
Protests against Israel picked up after October 7, 2023, when the terror group Hamas launched a surprise attack against Israel, killing roughly 1,200 people and taking hundreds more captive. About 100 captives are still believed to be held by Hamas.
Israel launched a war against Hamas in Gaza and has since faced pressure and attacks from numerous terror groups in the region, as well as from Iran, the world’s leading state-sponsor of terror.

Trump&#8217;s post takes on a similar tone as his 2023 Thanksgiving Day message when he also slammed &#8220;Radical Left Lunatics&#8221; and railed against New York Attorney General Letitia James, who brought civil fraud charges against him. Trump also blasted President Joe Biden, who he said &#8220;allowed our Country to go to HELL,&#8221; and at the end of his message, Trump added, &#8220;Have no fear, however, we will WIN the Presidential Election of 2024, &amp; MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!&#8221;

Following his election victory, Trump also celebrated the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/judge-chutkan-dismisses-federal-election-charges-against-trump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dismissal</a> of charges related to his alleged mishandling of classified documents and federal election charges, which were brought by special counsel Jack Smith.
“These cases, like all of the other cases I have been forced to go through, are empty and lawless, and should never have been brought,” Trump said. “Over $100 Million Dollars of Taxpayer Dollars has been wasted in the Democrat Party’s fight against their Political Opponent, ME.”
