Tesla is rolling out its robotaxis in Dallas and Houston, the electric vehicle maker said on Saturday, marking further expansion of its nascent service in the United States since its Austin, Texas, launch last year.
Tesla&#8217;s official robotaxi account on X announced the launch and posted two videos showing its best-selling Model Y SUVs running in the two cities with no human driver or monitor in the front seats.
It posted two map images outlining service boundaries, but did not disclose further details such as fleet size or pricing.
&#8220;Try Tesla Robotaxi in Dallas &amp; Houston!&#8221; CEO Elon Musk said reposting the X post.
Tesla&#8217;s move comes as the robotaxi business has regained momentum with Alphabet&#8217;s Waymo and Amazon&#8217;s Zoox speeding up expansion.
Expanding the robotaxi service and wider adoption of its full self-driving software, a version of which underpins the technology, is key to Tesla&#8217;s growth strategy as Musk has pivoted the company&#8217;s focus to artificial intelligence and robotics from EVs.
Much of the company&#8217;s $1.3 trillion valuation hinges on that bet.
Tesla first deployed a small group of self-driving taxis in an area of Austin with human safety monitors and other restrictions. The company has since widened the service area and started removing the monitors.
Last year, Tesla also started a ride-hailing service in the San Francisco Bay Area. Musk has promised to expand the robotaxi service rapidly in the U.S., but missed earlier predictions of its robotaxis operating widely in multiple U.S. metro areas by the end of 2025.

It features a silicone skin engineered to express more than a dozen basic emotions and hundreds of micro-expressions, powered by 19 servomotors. However, during its debut, a calibration error caused the fall, which Vitukhin described as a necessary learning experience in the robot’s ongoing test phase. The team addressed the mishap with optimism, expressing hope that such mistakes would drive future refinement of balance systems and control software.
Public response to AIdol’s tumble was swift and often satirical. The video went viral, with viewers — particularly Americans — mocking the incident with quips such as “Walks like Kamala Harris,” “Vodka powered,” and “Russia, where even the robots are drunk.”
While some commenters saw humor in the mishap, others saw it as an indicator of the challenges developers face as they transition humanoid robots from laboratory prototypes to robust real-world systems. Analysts point out that this blunder is reminiscent of previous embarrassing robot unveilings and serves as a reminder of ongoing hurdles — ensuring stability, safety, and reliability under public scrutiny remains an unresolved issue.​
In contrast, the event highlights Tesla’s Optimus project, which is advancing rapidly in 2025. Tesla has begun construction of a dedicated factory for Optimus at its global headquarters in Texas, with plans to produce up to 10 million units per year by 2027. The third-generation Optimus robots are slated to launch in early 2026, promising major technological leaps: advanced human-like manipulation, autonomous learning from direct observation of humans (“sim2real” training), and broad application across industries and homes.

WASHINGTON — A group representing nearly all major automakers asked the Trump administration Tuesday to roll back aggressive vehicle emissions limits that seek to force the industry to build a rising number of electric vehicles.
The Alliance for Automotive Innovation, which represents General Motors, Toyota Motor, Volkswagen, Hyundai, and other major automakers, said in a filing with the Environmental Protection Agency that legislation signed by President Donald Trump in June will increase the effective price of EVs and could lead to a near-term decline in EV market share.
They argue that rules finalized last year under President Joe Biden are no longer feasible.
&#8220;The 2027 and later standards are simply not achievable in light of significant market, charging infrastructure, supply chain, affordability, and other challenges as well as recent policy changes enacted,&#8221; the group said.
The 2024 Biden rules aim to cut passenger vehicle fleetwide tailpipe emissions by nearly 50% by 2032 compared with 2027 projected levels. The EPA forecast between 35% and 56% of new vehicles sold between 2030 and 2032 would need to be electric.
On Sept. 30, the $7,500 EV tax credit expires, and automakers warn that &#8220;a significant portion&#8221; of automakers may lose a battery production tax credit for EVs typically worth $3,000 per year next year under the law.
&#8220;This harms not only the automotive manufacturers that have spent hundreds of millions of dollars investing in electric vehicle technology, but also the entire supply chain that has supported these initiatives,&#8221; the group said.
In July, the EPA proposed rescinding the long-standing finding that greenhouse gas emissions endanger human health, removing the legal foundation for all U.S. greenhouse gas regulations, a move that would end current limits on greenhouse gas pollution from vehicle tailpipes.
Democrats in Congress and environmental groups have called on the EPA to drop its plan and retain the rules.
Automakers argue the EPA should still rewrite the Biden rules, saying they &#8220;still need to be revised to feasible levels to provide certainty for the industry.&#8221; The group said &#8220;such a contingency plan will be critical if motor vehicle GHG standards are retained or reinstated in some way.&#8221;

Tesla must face a certified class action by California drivers who said Elon Musk misled them for eight years about the self-driving capabilities of his company&#8217;s electric vehicles.
U.S. District Judge Rita Lin said the common question of whether Tesla lacked sensors to achieve high-level autonomy, plus its inability to &#8220;demonstrate a long-distance autonomous drive with any of its vehicles,&#8221; justified group lawsuits by two sets of drivers who purchased its Full Self-Driving technology package.
In her decision on Monday, the San Francisco-based judge also said thousands of people likely saw Tesla&#8217;s claim in the &#8220;Autopilot&#8221; section of its website from October 2016 to August 2024 that its vehicles contained hardware for full self-driving.
Tesla made a similar claim in a blog post, newsletter, and quarterly earnings call, as did Musk at a 2016 press conference.
&#8220;While these channels alone may not ordinarily be enough to establish class-wide exposure for a traditional car manufacturer, Tesla&#8217;s distinctive advertising strategy warrants a departure from the typical approach,&#8221; Lin wrote.
Tesla does not use mass advertising or independent dealers, and Lin said it was reasonable to infer that class members interested in Full Self-Driving technology went to Tesla&#8217;s website to get information.
Lawyers for Tesla did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Tuesday.
The Austin, Texas-based company had said it was unreasonable to assume all class members saw the challenged statements, and there was no common proof that the statements were material.
Class actions can allow larger recoveries at lower cost than if plaintiffs were forced to sue individually.
The California classes include drivers who bought the Full Self-Driving package from May 19, 2017, to July 31, 2024, and opted out of Tesla&#8217;s arbitration agreement, and drivers who bought the package from October 20, 2016, to May 19, 2017.
Lin refused to certify a class of drivers who bought Tesla&#8217;s Enhanced Autopilot package because its &#8220;core product qualities&#8221; did not require full self-driving functionality, making Tesla&#8217;s alleged false statements immaterial to purchasing decisions.
Federal officials have examined whether Tesla&#8217;s full self-driving software is safe. The software is also a key component of Tesla&#8217;s robotaxis.
The case is In re Tesla Advanced Driver Assistance Systems Litigation, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, No. 22-05240.

Tesla Drivers Can Pursue Class Action Over Self-driving Claims, Judge Rules

A jury in Miami found that Tesla was partly to blame for a fatal 2019 crash that killed a young woman and severely wounded her boyfriend. It was the first federal trial involving a fatal crash linked to Tesla&#8217;s Autopilot mode.
The verdict, which came down on Friday, found that Tesla and its self-driving technology were 33% responsible for the crash, with the remainder of the blame falling on the driver, George Brian McGee, The New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/08/01/business/tesla-autopilot-federal-trial-verdict.html">reported</a>. Tesla could be forced to pay as much as $243 million to the parents of the deceased woman, Naibel Benavides, and her boyfriend, Dillon Angulo — but Elon Musk&#8217;s electric vehicle company said it would appeal the jury&#8217;s verdict.
“Today’s verdict is wrong and only works to set back automotive safety and jeopardize Tesla’s and the entire industry’s efforts to develop and implement lifesaving technology,” Tesla said.
“Florida law is explicit that punitive damages have been all but eliminated in product liability cases such as this one,” the company added. “We are confident that the punitive damage award at a minimum, and likely this whole verdict, will be overturned by the appellate court.”
The crash at the center of the case took place on April 25, 2019, when McGee was driving his Tesla Model S near Key Largo, Florida, and blew through an intersection at 62 mph, crashing into a black SUV that was legally parked on the side of a dirt road near the intersection. The Tesla was in Autopilot mode at the time of the crash, but McGee had his foot on the accelerator, which overrides Autopilot mode. Before he reached the intersection, McGee dropped his phone and bent down to look for it, and told police that he did not see the intersection or the stop sign.
McGee said on the stand that he thought Tesla&#8217;s Autopilot mode would protect him from a crash.
Lawyers representing the plaintiffs in the federal trial argued that Musk and Tesla have exaggerated Tesla&#8217;s Autopilot technology.
“The Tesla car is a good car,” attorney Brett Schreiber said, according to the <a href="https://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/community/florida-keys/article311553847.html">Miami Herald</a>. “It’s the Autopilot that will kill you.”
During the trial, Schreiber also quoted Musk, who has said that Tesla&#8217;s autopilot system is safer than a human driver.
Tesla&#8217;s lawyers pinned the entire blame for the crash on McGee, who was on his phone for 13 minutes before the crash, and was driving at varying speeds. Joel Smith, a lawyer representing Tesla, said McGee was &#8220;reckless&#8221; and &#8220;aggressive,&#8221; adding that “no car could have prevented” the crash. Smith also pointed to Tesla&#8217;s owner&#8217;s manual, which states, “It is the drivers’ responsibility to stay alert, drive safely and be in control of the vehicle.”
The jury&#8217;s verdict comes as Tesla looks to roll out self-driving robotaxis on American streets. The first robotaxis <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/tesla-shares-soar-after-first-robotaxis-hit-the-road">hit the road</a> for testing in Austin, Texas, in June.

(Reuters) — Tesla shares jumped 10% on Monday after the electric-vehicle maker started testing its long-awaited robotaxi service, a key step toward proving the technology that CEO Elon Musk has for years touted as a crucial driver of its lofty valuation.
The automaker deployed a small fleet of self-driving taxis in Austin, Texas, on Sunday, marking the first time its cars have carried paying passengers without human drivers. The rides were being offered for a flat fee of $4.20 in a limited zone.
The trial&#8217;s success is crucial for Tesla as Musk has pivoted the company to self-driving cars and robots, shelving plans for mass-market dominance in the EV space as Chinese competition heats up and demand slows for its aging line-up of models.
&#8220;It was a comfortable, safe, and personalized experience,&#8221; said Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives, who took multiple robotaxi rides on Sunday and has long been a Tesla bull.
&#8220;There was a moment where we drove up a narrow road going up a hill with cars parked on both sides with oncoming traffic and people opening their car doors into the road and the robotaxi masterfully maneuvered with patience and safety.&#8221;
Many social-media influencers also posted videos of their first rides on X, showing the cars navigating busy city streets by slowing down and making room for incoming traffic.

Still, the tightly controlled trial — with about 10 vehicles and front-seat riders acting as &#8220;safety monitors&#8221; &#8211; is just the first step in what could be a years-long process of scaling up the service, according to some industry experts.

Tesla, as well as rivals including Google-backed Waymo, have faced federal investigations and recalls following collisions.
Industry experts have questioned the efficacy of Tesla&#8217;s self-driving technology that depends mostly on cameras and AI, without redundant sensors such as lidar and radar, claiming fog, heavy rain and glaring sunlight can hamper safety.
The company will also have to navigate a new Texas law taking effect September 1 that requires a state permit for self-driving vehicles and reflects bipartisan calls for a cautious roll-out.
If Monday&#8217;s gains hold, Tesla — the world&#8217;s most valuable automaker — will add nearly $100 billion to its market value of about $1 trillion. The stock has declined about 12% so far this year, after the company faced criticism and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/fbi-issues-warning-over-left-wing-terrorist-attacks-against-tesla">threats</a> over Musk&#8217;s role in the Trump administration and his backing of right-wing political movements in Europe.
Still, Tesla trades at nearly 149 times forward earnings estimates, far above auto rivals such as Ford Motor at 9.3 and tech giants including Microsoft at 31.6.

The president repeatedly said he hopes Musk&#8217;s company Tesla does well and praised Musk&#8217;s brainchild, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), but said he&#8217;s &#8220;not really interested&#8221; in working toward reconciliation.
&#8220;There are efforts &#8212; I&#8217;ve been asked about it,&#8221; Trump said of outsiders trying to get the pair back together. &#8220;But I&#8217;m not really interested in it. I&#8217;m really interested in the country and solving problems, including war problems in very far away lands.&#8221;
Trump also said he&#8217;ll look at potentially canceling government contracts with Musk&#8217;s companies, only if it&#8217;s &#8220;fair.&#8221;
&#8220;We’ll take a look at everything. He gets a lot of subsidy, so we&#8217;ll take a look at that — only if it’s fair for him, and for the country, I would certainly think about it, yeah. Trump made a similar statement on Truth Social, <a href="https://www.teslarati.com/spacex-decommission-dragon-spacecraft-in-response-to-pres-trump-war-of-words-elon-musk/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">writing</a>, &#8220;The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts. On reports of Musk&#8217;s alleged drug use, POTUS took to hitting the media. “I don’t want to comment on his drug use, I don&#8217;t know what his status is,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I read an article in The New York Times &#8212; I thought it was, frankly, it sounded very unfair to me.”
This past week, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Musk’s statements on Trump were a reaction to not getting what he wanted in the reconciliation bill.
“This is an unfortunate episode from Elon,” she said in a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/white-house-responds-to-elon-musk-epstein-claims-an-unfortunate-episode-from-elon" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement to The Daily Wire</a>, “who is unhappy with the One Big, Beautiful Bill because it does not include the policies he wanted.”

WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump is considering selling the Tesla he bought from Elon Musk, The Daily Wire has learned.
Musk has repeatedly asked to meet with the president on Friday, a senior White House office said, following his very public and dramatic outburst on X on Thursday, when he repeatedly criticized the president and accused him of covering up the Jeffrey Epstein files to protect himself.
Trump, the official shared with The Daily Wire, is focused on getting the &#8220;One Big Beautiful Bill&#8221; passed and does not plan to speak with Musk on Friday. He&#8217;s also considering selling the red Tesla that he bought from Musk in March, when Tesla delivered five of its cars to the White House for Trump to inspect — which he did, with Musk by his side.
As of Friday morning, the Tesla is parked outside the White House. It is an all-wheel-drive red Model S Plaid that was previously listed on the Tesla website for $88,490.

POLITICO reported Thursday that White House aides were urging the president to avoid escalating the fight with Musk, urging the president to take a phone call from the billionaire CEO. During a phone call with ABC News Chief Washington Correspondent Jonathan Karl on Friday morning, Trump said that he was &#8220;not particularly&#8221; interested in talking to Elon.
The president also told CNN: “I won’t be speaking to [Musk] for a while I guess, but I wish him well.”
“I’m not even thinking about Elon,” Trump added. “He’s got a problem. The poor guy’s got a problem.”

Karl added that Trump didn&#8217;t &#8220;seem angry or even concerned about the feud.&#8221;

On Thursday, President Donald Trump <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-says-hes-very-disappointed-with-elon-musk-fires-back" target="_blank" rel="noopener">railed</a> against Elon Musk over the “One Big, Beautiful Bill,” pinning the tech billionaire&#8217;s opposition to its plan to phase out federal electric vehicle tax credits. But is it really to blame?
Musk, whose Tesla company sells electric vehicles, “only developed the problem [with the bill] when he found out we’re going to have to cut the EV mandate because that&#8217;s billions and billions of dollars,&#8221; Trump <a href="https://x.com/theblaze/status/1930659597905170561" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> reporters at the White House.
&#8220;And it really is unfair,&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;We want to have cars of all types — electric — we want to have electric, but we want to have gasoline combustion. We want to have different — we want to have hybrids. &#8230; We want to be able to sell everything.&#8221;
The bill accelerates the phase-out of the $7,500 consumer tax credit for electric vehicles from December 31, 2032, to the end of this year. It also outlines terms for a one-year reprieve, but Tesla has already surpassed the 200,000 sales cap to qualify.
In response to Trump, Musk declared that he does not care whether the bill retains cuts for credits on electric vehicles — as well as solar, which is expected to impact the Tesla Energy division with its solar panels and battery storage products.

Musk also <a href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1930680655173882078" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tagged</a> the president in another post, asking if he remembered their joint appearance outside the White House in March, when Trump <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qc-p9zG00G8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">praised</a> Musk for not complaining that he &#8220;ended&#8221; the EV mandate.
In a post from &#8220;Tesla Owners Silicon Valley,&#8221; Musk is seen in an old video <a href="https://x.com/teslaownersSV/status/1930683013257634170" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interview</a> claiming the tax credits actually pose a &#8220;competitive disadvantage&#8221; for Tesla in comparison to companies that might sell EVs for a much lower price.
Last week, as Musk was ending his time helping to oversee the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) effort, he started to harshly criticize the legislation — focusing on how it is estimated to inflate the national debt, not the EV credits.
Despite the attack on the bill, Musk appeared with Trump in the Oval Office on Friday, getting a warm send-off after completing his stint as a special government employee. &#8220;Elon&#8217;s really not leaving,&#8221; Trump <a href="https://x.com/DailyMail/status/1928568349606215888" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. &#8220;He&#8217;s going to be back and forth, I think.&#8221;

President Donald Trump continued his tirade against his former senior adviser, Elon Musk, on Thursday, posting on social media that Musk &#8220;just went CRAZY!&#8221; and threatening to strip government contracts with his companies.

Musk&#8217;s electric vehicle company, Tesla, has also received government contracts and subsidies through the years, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/elon-musk-tesla-biden-federal-contract-electric-vehicles-donald-trump-f8f5b07d03f6e0c9d072abd69feedec4">raking</a> in over $40 million from the federal government.
The fallout between Trump and Musk stems from Musk&#8217;s belief that the president’s bill doesn’t do enough to cut waste and fraud in the federal government. He is also concerned about the &#8220;Big, Beautiful Bill&#8221; adding to the federal deficit. Trump said on Thursday that Musk &#8220;only developed the problem [with the bill] when he found out we’re going to have to cut the EV [electric vehicle] mandate,&#8221; a claim that Musk denied.

Former CNN politics reporter Chris Cillizza revealed on Wednesday that his Tesla was vandalized with a &#8220;Musk is a Nazi&#8221; sign at his son&#8217;s soccer tournament last weekend.
Cillizza, a left-wing journalist who worked for CNN from 2017 until 2022, <a href="https://chriscillizza.substack.com/p/someone-defaced-my-tesla">wrote</a> on his Substack that the vandalism is another sign that the politicization of every aspect of American life “is making us all crazy.”
Cillizza recalled the days when owning a Tesla meant “coding yourself as like an enviro-liberal-wacko-communist,&#8221; and now, in 2025, his car “symbolizes everything the left hates.”
“Doesn’t that suggest that there’s an inherent ephemeralness to what an inanimate object ‘means’ in a political context?” Cillizza added. “As in: If the meaning of owning a certain kind of car can change 180 degrees in the space of five years, isn’t it possible that ascribing meaning to it in the first place was misguided?”
In reality, he only bought it as a “cool” car that was really “fun to drive,” not as a “symbol of my support for Elon Musk’s role in the Trump administration.”
The former CNN writer further aired his grievances over how the politicization of “everything” even extended to chicken sandwiches, noting how eating at Chick-fil-A has led to critiques from his audience like, “How does HATE taste?”

“But does a sandwich have to be political at all? I didn’t eat it because I wanted to send a message to gay people. I ate it because it was delicious,” Cillizza wrote. “[Is] it ok to eat Chick-Fil-A now? Or still not because the family who founded it are evangelicals who have, in the past, expressed their opposition to gay marriage?”
The journalist dismissed the idea that merely buying a product “[lines] the pockets of people with views that should be rejected” or “normalizes” their views.
&#8220;If your bar is that you never interact with or buy anything from a company whose founder has taken a position with which you disagree or which has donated to a cause you don&#8217;t support, I find it very hard to believe you are going to make any purchases ever,&#8221; he said.
The former CNN analyst warned that such extreme politicization is &#8220;making us all crazy&#8221; and &#8220;driving us further from any sort of recognition of our common humanity,&#8221; concluding that Americans would be better served by finding common ground rather than seeking political battles in every aspect of daily life.
