On Wednesday evening, a handful of Republicans in the Senate joined forces with Democrats and independents on Wednesday to pass a measure subverting the Trump administration&#8217;s 25% tariffs on Canadian goods.
The Senate voted 51-48 in favor of a <a href="https://www.kaine.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/ros25392.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">resolution</a> from Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) that, if enacted, would terminate the <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/fact-sheets/2025/02/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-imposes-tariffs-on-imports-from-canada-mexico-and-china/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">national emergency declaration</a> employed by President Donald Trump to impose tariffs on Canada earlier this year.
Despite the Senate&#8217;s rebuke, Kaine&#8217;s resolution faces significant challenges, as it needs approval from the GOP-led House to take effect — an unlikely prospect. Additionally, Trump indicated he would veto the resolution if it reached his desk.
Senate Republicans who <a href="https://x.com/SenatePress/status/1907578012867940509" target="_blank" rel="noopener">broke ranks</a> to support Kaine&#8217;s resolution included Sens. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Susan Collins (R-ME), and Rand Paul (R-KY). Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS) did not vote.
&#8220;The Maine economy is integrated with Canada, our most important trading partner,&#8221; Collins <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7KvDcrFi0PY" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> on the Senate floor, adding later, &#8220;The tariffs on Canada would be detrimental to many Maine families and our local economies.&#8221;
Collins acknowledged sharing Trump&#8217;s goal of &#8220;stemming the tide of dangerous fentanyl that flows into the United States,&#8221; but insisted that, &#8220;unlike Mexico and China&#8221; — two other countries targeted for tariffs — &#8220;Canada is not complicit in this crisis.&#8221;
In an <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/114266599439835683" target="_blank" rel="noopener">post</a> on Truth Social before the vote, Trump called out the GOP defectors by name, urging them to reject a &#8220;ploy of the Dems to show and expose the weakness of certain Republicans&#8221; and encouraging people in their states to contact their senators.
Trump contended that Canada was facilitating the flow of fentanyl into the United States and emphasized that Kaine&#8217;s resolution is &#8220;not going anywhere because the House will never approve it and I, as your President, will never sign it.&#8221;
Earlier this year, Trump imposed 25% tariffs on some imports from Canada, arguing that the U.S. neighbor was not doing enough to curb the trafficking of drugs such as fentanyl. Canada <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/03/12/canada-tariffs-steel-aluminum-trump-computers.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">responded</a> by announcing 25% retaliatory tariffs.
The penalties against Canada preceded Trump&#8217;s &#8220;Liberation Day&#8221; announcement of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-unleashes-liberation-day-tariffs" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reciprocal tariffs</a> on dozens of other countries around the world during an event in the White House Rose Garden on Wednesday afternoon.
When Kaine <a href="https://www.kaine.senate.gov/press-releases/kaine-klobuchar-and-warner-formally-file-legislation-to-undo-president-trumps-senseless-taxes-on-canadian-goods" target="_blank" rel="noopener">filed</a> the resolution on Canada tariffs with Sens. Amy Klobucher (D-MN) and Mark Warner (D-VA), he said the measure was privileged, meaning the Republican-controlled Senate was required to vote on it in the coming weeks.
They <a href="https://www.kaine.senate.gov/press-releases/kaine-klobuchar-and-warner-announce-expected-vote-timing-on-their-bill-to-undo-canada-tariffs-that-will-raise-costs" target="_blank" rel="noopener">argued</a> that tariffs against Canada have disrupted the United States economy in a way that raises costs for American consumers, harms workers and businesses, strains a key trade partnership, and ignites a destructive trade war.
On the GOP side, McConnell <a href="https://www.courier-journal.com/story/opinion/contributors/2025/02/12/trump-tariffs-damage-kentucky-economy-bourbon-mcconnell/78393549007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">warned</a> of higher prices and harm to Kentucky industries, Paul <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yx2MD3iOAiY" target="_blank" rel="noopener">objected</a> to the use of emergency authority for tariffs, and Murkowski pondered why the U.S. was <a href="https://x.com/highbrow_nobrow/status/1902855339902390661" target="_blank" rel="noopener">&#8220;fighting&#8221;</a> Canada while &#8220;making nice&#8221; with Russia.
Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso (R-WY) said in a statement after the vote on Wednesday that Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) had already declared Kaine’s resolution dead on arrival in the House, and it will never reach Trump’s desk.
Kaine’s &#8220;goal&#8221; was &#8220;to undermine President Trump’s successful work to secure the Northern Border,&#8221; he said, adding, &#8220;This meaningless messaging resolution will not stop Senate Republicans from making America’s communities safer.&#8221;

Fifty-one members, including two Republicans, <a href="https://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_votes/vote1182/vote_118_2_00190.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">voted</a> to advance the legislation — an insufficient number to reach the three-fifths majority needed to break the filibuster. Thirty-eight Republicans voted against moving forward. Nine other GOP members and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/democrat-senator-bob-menendez-to-change-party-status-amid-his-corruption-trial" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ)</a> did not vote.

Democrat lawmakers are pressing the birth control debate in a presidential election year. They argue Markey&#8217;s legislation is necessary because the 2022 Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v. Wade — a ruling that returned the issue of abortion access to the states — also <a href="https://www.markey.senate.gov/news/press-releases/markey-hirono-duckworth-statement-on-the-right-to-contraception-act-floor-vote" target="_blank" rel="noopener">&#8220;threatened&#8221;</a> contraception.
Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL), who is <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/rick-scott-joins-race-for-senate-gop-leader" target="_blank" rel="noopener">running</a> to become the next leader of the Senate GOP, led 21 of his Republican colleagues in a <a href="https://www.rickscott.senate.gov/2024/6/sen-rick-scott-leads-colleagues-in-slamming-democrats-attacks-on-religious-freedoms-parental-rights-political-games-on-contraception" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a> that disparaged the contraception bill. Sen. The pair of GOP lawmakers who joined with the majority of Democrats and the independents who caucus with them voting to advance the legislation included Susan Collins (R-ME) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK).

Senators are speaking out on the decision to relax the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/the-fetterman-rule-senate-cuts-dress-code-enforcement">chamber&#8217;s dress code</a> that some are calling <a href="https://twitter.com/WashTimes/status/1703936751012659445">&#8220;The Fetterman rule,&#8221;</a> a nod to Sen. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/john-fetterman">John Fetterman</a> (D-PA) with his penchant for hoodies and gym shorts.
Majority Leader <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/chuck-schumer">Chuck Schumer</a> (D-NY) directed the Senate&#8217;s sergeant-at-arms to stop enforcement of the informal rules dictating that members wear business attire on the Senate floor. The change was tailored to only affect senators and not staff members.
&#8220;Senators are able to choose what they wear on the Senate floor. I will continue to wear a suit,&#8221; Schumer said in a <a href="https://www.axios.com/2023/09/17/senate-drops-dress-code-schumer">statement to Axios</a>, the first news outlet to report the change over the weekend.
As the story went viral, many of the 100 members of the Senate began to react to the new clothing paradigm. Some Republicans joked about it and offered wild outfit ideas while others complained about the change or indicated that they were not concerned.
Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) joked to reporters that she planned to &#8220;wear a bikini,&#8221; <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/susan-collins-jokes-wear-bikini-senate-while-slamming-dress-code-changes">according to NBC News</a>. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) indicated she was &#8220;fine&#8221; with the new dress code. &#8220;I’m not so hung up on things to think that every single day a man needs to wear a neck tie,&#8221; Murkowski said. &#8220;If I had my way, we would have summer casual for men so we didn’t have the air conditioning so low and spend so much money keeping this place cold.&#8221;
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) was <a href="https://twitter.com/burgessev/status/1704211657713500368">asked</a> if he would restore the old rules if Republicans retake the upper chamber.
“I think I’m pretty safe in saying most if not all Republican senators think we ought to dress up to go to work. So I can’t imagine that we’re going to be wearing jeans on the Senate floor anytime soon,” McConnell said, <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/4212624-mcconnell-knocks-new-dress-code-senators-ought-to-dress-up-to-go-to-work/">according to The Hill</a>.
Democrats in the Senate also commented on dress code change, with some taking shots at Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) over a post to X that criticized the new rules.
&#8220;The Senate no longer enforcing a dress code for Senators to appease Fetterman is disgraceful. Dress code is one of society’s standards that set etiquette and respect for our institutions. Stop lowering the bar!&#8221; Greene <a href="https://twitter.com/RepMTG/status/1703492525498020129">said in her post</a>.
&#8220;Seriously? You’re b****ing about Senate dress code when House Republicans are about to drive the Federal Government off a cliff? Again? Talk about disgraceful,&#8221; Sen. Tina Smith (D-MN) <a href="https://twitter.com/SenTinaSmith/status/1703853202012094840">said</a> in response to Greene, referring to negotiations on spending that could lead to a government shutdown at the end of the month without a deal.
Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) reportedly said he spoke to Fetterman about the dress code change.
“I said ‘John, I think it’s wrong &amp; there&#8217;s no way I can comply with that’…Wanted to tell him directly that I totally oppose it &amp; I will do everything I can to try to hold the decorum of the Senate,&#8221; Manchin recalled, according to a POLITICO reporter&#8217;s <a href="https://twitter.com/UrsulaPerano/status/1704204674771882215">post to X</a>.

&#8220;I&#8217;ve been to the border with Mexico,&#8221; she <a href="https://www.medpagetoday.com/psychiatry/addictions/99911?xid=nl_mpt_morningbreak2022-07-27&amp;eun=g2042099d0r&amp;utm_source=Sailthru&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=MorningBreak_072722&amp;utm_term=NL_Gen_Int_Daily_News_Update_active">said</a> during the hearing.&#8221;I&#8217;ve talked with the Border Patrol officers out on their midnight shift, and they&#8217;ve expressed such frustration that they have had to divert their resources to handling the tremendous influx of people crossing the border, rather than focusing on illicit drug interdiction.&#8221;
In March 2021, Collins visited the southern border with a group of colleagues and said they heard members of drug cartels from across the river throughout the night.
&#8220;This has been truly extraordinary. It&#8217;s midnight. We&#8217;re on the banks of the Rio Grande and across the river, we can hear the sounds of cartel members, taunting us, yelling at us. They&#8217;re exploiting vulnerable women and children,&#8221; Collins <a href="https://www.newscentermaine.com/article/news/politics/maine-sen-susan-collins-to-visit-us-mexico-border/97-df60fc81-650c-4d52-a164-c9b42505cf21">said</a> at the time. &#8220;This system is inhumane. It&#8217;s dangerous.&#8221;
On Tuesday, Collins stated, &#8220;So I cannot help but conclude that our inability to secure the border has an adverse impact and contributes directly to our inability to stop the flow of drugs into this country.&#8221;
Collins noted that the fentanyl crisis had particularly hit her state hard over the past year.
&#8220;The data overwhelmingly demonstrate [that], whether you look at national data, or data from the state of Maine,&#8221; she stated.&#8221;Last year, fentanyl was involved in 77% of deadly overdoses in Maine. That&#8217;s a dramatic increase,&#8221; she continued.
Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) also pleaded with the Biden administration to clamp down on the border.
&#8220;We have to recognize that a policy at the border which has been feckless and ineffective &#8230; not just allows people to come here who are illegal immigrants — it allows drugs to come across as well,&#8221; he said.
&#8220;We&#8217;ve got to control that border. If there&#8217;s a message I wish the administration to get, it&#8217;s use your tools to control it,&#8221; Cassidy added.
Much of the fentanyl that flows through America&#8217;s borders is from Mexican drug cartels, the federal government has previously stated. “Sinaloa and the New Generation Jalisco (Cártel de Jalisco Nueva Generación or CJNG) cartels are likely the primary trafficking groups responsible for smuggling fentanyl into the United States from Mexico,&#8221; <a href="https://www.dea.gov/sites/default/files/2020-03/DEA_GOV_DIR-008-20%20Fentanyl%20Flow%20in%20the%20United%20States_0.pdf">according</a> to a January 2020 Drug Enforcement Agency report.
Former Attorney General William Barr also <a href="https://www.newsmax.com/newsmax-tv/newsmaxtv-billbarr-mexicancartels/2022/07/22/id/1080025/">recently blasted</a> President Joe Biden and his administration because they have &#8220;essentially abandoned the border&#8221; to the drug cartels.
Appearing on Newsmax, Barr told Greta Van Susteren that the Biden administration’s strategy against illicit international criminal organizations is not working.
“They are effectively terrorist organizations,” Barr claimed. “They are increasingly building their connections with terrorists. Their paramilitary can take on the Mexican military, and they have so much money they can corrupt any system.”
Barr added, “The United States [has been] relegated to working through Mexico to try to deal with the cartels, and I think that’s a losing proposition.”
The former attorney general declared that these nefarious actors should be treated “more like ISIS and less like the mafia.”
For the Biden administration&#8217;s part, Kemp Chester, a senior advisor for the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, said on Tuesday that the government needs to expand its capability to stop drugs from new and unique access points.
&#8220;What we have to do is very quickly identify when we have new vulnerabilities, when the traffickers have changed the way that they do business, and close those gaps and vulnerabilities as quickly as we possibly can,&#8221; Chester <a href="https://www.medpagetoday.com/psychiatry/addictions/99911?xid=nl_mpt_morningbreak2022-07-27&amp;eun=g2042099d0r&amp;utm_source=Sailthru&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=MorningBreak_072722&amp;utm_term=NL_Gen_Int_Daily_News_Update_active">said</a>. &#8220;And that&#8217;s what we&#8217;re in the process of doing right now.&#8221;

Democratic lawmakers are falsely accusing two <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/supreme-court">Supreme Court</a> justices of lying under oath about <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/roe-v-wade">Roe v. Wade</a>, suggesting that the justices should face an <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/impeachment">impeachment</a> inquiry.
“They lied,” said Democratic New York Rep. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/alexandria-ocasio-cortez">Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez</a> of Justices <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/neil-gorsuch">Neil Gorsuch</a> and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/brett-kavanaugh">Brett Kavanaugh</a> during a Sunday interview with &#8220;Meet the Press.&#8221; &#8220;There must be consequences for such a deeply destabilizing action and hostile takeover of our democratic institutions.&#8221;
The only problem — neither justice promised to uphold Roe.
Both Kavanaugh and Gorsuch declined to directly address questions about Roe v. Wade during their confirmation hearings: Kavanaugh <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/06/us/politics/kavanaugh-hearing-confirmation.html">referred</a> to the case as “important precedent of the Supreme Court that has been reaffirmed many times,&#8221; while Gorsuch <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/06/27/us/aoc-roe-abortion-scotus.html">called</a> Roe “a precedent of the U.S. Supreme Court that had been reaffirmed.”
“For a judge to start tipping his or her hand about whether they like or dislike this or that precedent would send the wrong signal,” Gorsuch said at the time. “It would send the signal to the American people that the judge’s personal views have something to do with the judge’s job.”
Mark Paoletta, the former general counsel for the Office of Management &amp; Budget who worked on Justice Kavanaugh&#8217;s, Gorsuch&#8217;s, and Clarence Thomas’s confirmations, told The Daily Wire that Gorsuch and Kavanaugh recognizing Roe as precedent was a statement of fact — &#8220;not a promise never to overturn it.&#8221;
&#8220;That’s absurd,&#8221; he said, emphasizing that nothing in the justices&#8217; testimony was inconsistent with their actions. &#8220;And to make such a commitment would be unethical and a violation of the judicial code of ethics. They testified truthfully in every way. These clams by the Left are ridiculous.&#8221;
Both West Virginia Sen. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/joe-manchin">Joe Manchin</a> (D-WV) and Sen. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/susan-collins">Susan Collins</a> (R-ME), who voted to confirm the justices, expressed concerns following the overturn of Roe that the justices had lied to them.

&#8220;I trusted Justice Gorsuch and Justice Kavanaugh when they testified under oath that they also believed Roe v. Wade was settled legal precedent and I am alarmed they chose to reject the stability the ruling has provided for two generations of Americans,&#8221; Manchin <a href="https://www.manchin.senate.gov/newsroom/press-releases/manchin-statement-on-scotus-decision-to-overturn-roe-v-wade">said</a> in a statement on Friday that expressed support for legislation codifying Roe v. Wade.
Collins echoed these sentiments, suggesting that the justices were dishonest when they met with her.
“This decision is inconsistent with what Justices Gorsuch and Kavanaugh said in their testimony and their meetings with me, where they both were insistent on the importance of supporting long-standing precedents that the country has relied upon,&#8221; she <a href="https://www.collins.senate.gov/newsroom/senator-collins-statement-on-scotus-dobbs-decision">said</a>.
Neither Collins nor Manchin immediately responded to requests for comment from The Daily Wire.

Sen. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/kirsten-gillibrand">Kirsten Gillibrand</a> (D-NY) agreed.
“Every single one of them said they would not undermine a settled precedent, every single one of them said under oath, that they would actually preserve Roe,” Gillibrand <a href="https://wskg.org/gillibrand-some-supreme-court-justices-lied-about-roe-v-wade-during-confirmation-hearings/">said</a> of the justices who overturned Roe. “So the fact that they all lied, is shocking.”
“I hope we have hearings, because I don’t know how you can accept Supreme Court justices who lied in order to be confirmed,” Gillibrand added. “That is absolutely fraud, and there should be consequences. So I hope there’s an investigation.”
American Enterprise Institute fellow Marc Thiessen <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/06/28/kavanaugh-gorsuch-roe-kagan-supreme-court/">wrote in a Washington Post op-ed</a> that &#8220;none of the conservative justices promised to uphold Roe,&#8221; noting that if they had done so, &#8220;that would be an impeachable offense.&#8221;

&#8220;It would be a serious violation of judicial ethics for a nominee to the federal bench to say how they would vote in a case before hearing the facts and evidence,&#8221; wrote Thiessen.
During Ruth Bader Ginsburg&#8217;s 1993 confirmation hearings, Ginsberg <a href="https://timesmachine.nytimes.com/timesmachine/1993/07/21/997393.html?pageNumber=2">explained</a> that “it would be wrong for me to say or preview in this legislative chamber how I would cast my vote on questions the Supreme Court may be called upon to decide.”
&#8220;A judge sworn to decide impartially can offer no forecasts, no hints, for that would show not only disregard for the specifics of the particular case, it would display disdain for the entire judicial process,&#8221; the late justice added.
&#8220;It is perfectly understandable for senators to try to divine how a justice, if confirmed, would rule on a case they care about,&#8221; Thiessen wrote. &#8220;But it would be a gross dereliction of judicial ethics for a nominee to prejudge a case or give senators any assurances of how they would decide. Which is why they all follow the &#8216;Ginsburg rule.&#8217; And there is nothing impeachable about that.&#8221;

Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) might be a pro-choice Republican, but that does not mean she supports the Democratic Party&#8217;s latest attempt to codify Roe v. Wade into federal law.
On Wednesday, Majority Leader Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) announced that the Senate would vote on the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA). That act &#8220;would establish a right to abortion through all nine months of pregnancy in all 50 states,&#8221; National Review <a href="https://www.nationalreview.com/2022/05/schumer-will-hold-another-vote-on-radical-abortion-bill/">reported</a>.
On Thursday, Collins told media reporters that she has serious concerns about the bill.
&#8220;It supersedes all other federal and state laws, including the conscience protections that are in the Affordable Care Act,&#8221; Collins <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2022/05/05/politics/susan-collins-democrat-abortion-rights-bill/index.html?utm_source=facebook&amp;utm_medium=news_tab">lamented</a>.
&#8220;It doesn&#8217;t protect the right of a Catholic hospital to not perform abortions. That right has been enshrined in law for a long time,&#8221; she also explained.
For his part, Schumer denied that the bill would force Catholic hospitals to provide abortions.
&#8220;Some are saying that this legislation would tell hospitals — certain religious hospitals — that they have to perform abortions,” Schumer <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/05/05/sen-collins-voices-opposition-legislation-that-would-create-statutory-right-abortion/?utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_campaign=wp_main&amp;utm_medium=social">said</a> on Thursday. &#8220;That is simply not true. This bill simply gives providers the statutory right to provide abortion care without medically unnecessary restrictions. That’s plain and simple. So, this rumor is false.&#8221;
The House version of the bill H.R. 2975, which passed last September, does indeed imply that Catholic doctors who do not perform abortions could lose access to public funds.
&#8220;Under H.R. 2975, doctors and nurses who conscientiously refuse to participate in abortion could lose their jobs and Catholic and other religious hospitals could be forced to provide abortions or lose public funds,&#8221; The Charlotte Lozier Institute <a href="https://lozierinstitute.org/ten-things-you-need-to-know-about-hr-2975/#_Toc32252705">reported</a> at the time.
&#8220;Section 4(a)(10) creates a statutory right to provide an abortion without any limitation &#8216;on a health care provider’s ability to provide immediate abortion services when that health care provider believes, based on the good-faith medical judgment of the provider, that delay would pose a risk to the patient’s health,'&#8221; Lozier explained.
&#8220;As defined in Section 3(2), the term &#8216;health care provider&#8217; includes entities as well as individuals,&#8221; the research non-profit continued. &#8220;Laws that prohibit hospitals and other entities from discriminating against doctors and nurses who conscientiously refuse to participate in abortion would fail under H.R. 2975 if the entity health care provider could show that such laws limit its ability to provide &#8216;immediate&#8217; abortion services and it believes based on it.&#8221;
National Review also <a href="https://www.nationalreview.com/2022/05/schumer-will-hold-another-vote-on-radical-abortion-bill/">noted</a> that the House version of the bill &#8220;is doomed in the Democratic Senate. It has the support of only 48 or 49 senators.&#8221;
Collins, as well as Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), have introduced their own bill that is a weakened version of the WHPA. But that bill also is unlikely to pass, National Review noted.

Centrist Republican Senators Susan Collins (ME) and Lisa Murkowski (AK) lamented the possibility that the Supreme Court could overturn Roe v. Wade after a draft opinion was leaked indicating that the Court is poised to overturn the landmark ruling that enshrined abortion as a right under federal law.
Speaking to reporters in the halls of the Capitol building Tuesday, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97ga-HOwcl0">Murkowski</a> condemned the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-supreme-court-strikes-down-roe-v-wade-decision-in-draft-of-majority-opinion-report-says">leak of the draft opinion</a>, before commenting that the decision itself &#8220;rocks&#8221; her confidence in the Court. &#8220;The leak is absolutely reprehensible, and needs to be condemned in the strongest possible terms,&#8221; Murkowski said. &#8220;I really find it shocking that this would happen. I understand it is unprecedented. Second point is, Roe is still the law of the land, we don&#8217;t know the direction that this decision will ultimately take, but if it goes in the direction that this leaked copy has indicated, I will just tell you that it rocks my confidence in the court right now.&#8221;
Murkowski also told reporters, via The Hill, that she spoke with several justices, whom she did not name, during their confirmation processes. She said the justices told her that they viewed Roe as settled law and gave her the impression that they would not vote to overturn it. “I think there were some representations made with regards to precedent and settled [law],” she said. “Comments were made to me and to others about Roe being settled and precedent.”
Collins issued a <a href="https://www.collins.senate.gov/newsroom/senator-collins-statement-on-leaked-dobbs-v-jackson-womens-health-organization-draft-decision">statement</a> Tuesday saying that the opinion, if it is actually the final ruling of the Court in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women&#8217;s Health Organization, would be &#8220;inconsistent&#8221; with the conversations she had with Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh during their confirmation processes. “If this leaked draft opinion is the final decision and this reporting is accurate, it would be completely inconsistent with what Justice Gorsuch and Justice Kavanaugh said in their hearings and in our meetings in my office. Obviously, we won’t know each Justice’s decision and reasoning until the Supreme Court officially announces its opinion in this case.”
Asked by reporters whether, in response to the leaked opinion, she felt misled by Gorsuch and Kavanaugh, Collins evaded the question, saying that her “statement speaks for itself,” <a href="https://thehill.com/news/3475255-collins-draft-roe-decision-completely-inconsistent-with-what-gorsuch-kavanaugh-told-me/">The Hill</a> reported. In addition, Collins Communications Director Annie Clark responded to questions about her stance on the Senate filibuster, telling Punchbowl News’ <a href="https://twitter.com/JakeSherman/status/1521511817591283713">Jake Sherman</a> that “Senator Collins’ position on the filibuster is unchanged.”
Murkowski also told reporters that she was open to considering legislation that would codify Roe into law, noting that she and Collins had introduced a similar bill in February. &#8220;I thought it made sense then and I think it makes perhaps more sense now,” Murkowski said. But The Hill noted that both senators voted against the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would have codified the decision.
A draft opinion in the case of Dobbs. v. Jackson Women&#8217;s Health Organization was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-supreme-court-strikes-down-roe-v-wade-decision-in-draft-of-majority-opinion-report-says">leaked</a> to Politico Monday night. The draft opinion “is a full-throated, unflinching repudiation of the 1973 decision which guaranteed federal constitutional protections of abortion rights and a subsequent 1992 decision – Planned Parenthood v. Casey – that largely maintained the right,” Politico reported.

Republican Maine Sen. Susan Collins said Tuesday that she will vote to confirm Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court.
Collins, who met with the judge Tuesday afternoon for the second time, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/30/us/politics/ketanji-brown-jackson-susan-collins.html">told The New York Times</a> in an interview that Jackson had explained away some concerns Collins had after the judge met with the Senate Judiciary Committee last week.

“I have decided to support the confirmation of Judge Jackson to be a member of the Supreme Court,” said Collins, who opposed the confirmation of Justice Amy Coney Barrett in the fall of 2020, objecting that her nomination was too close to the presidential election.
The GOP senator said that Jackson had reassured her that she would not bend &#8220;the law to meet a personal preference,” saying that Jackson met Collins&#8217; personal standards for Supreme Court justices.

“In recent years, senators on both sides of the aisle have gotten away from what I perceive to be the appropriate process for evaluating judicial nominees,” Collins said. “In my view, the role under the Constitution assigned to the Senate is to look at the credentials, experience and qualifications of the nominee. It is not to assess whether a nominee reflects the individual ideology of a senator or would vote exactly as an individual senator would want.”
If Collins votes for Jackson, The Times reported, Vice President Kamala Harris would not have to cast the tie breaking vote — an &#8220;unprecedented outcome that some saw as potentially damaging to the court’s standing,&#8221; the outlet reported.
Collins was also one of three Republicans to vote for Jackson to be confirmed to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in June, according to The Times.
Her announcement is bound to frustrate Republican senators, such as Republican Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley, who <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/do-you-regret-it-in-tense-exchange-on-child-pornography-judge-jackson-accuses-josh-hawley-of-preoccupation-with-small-subset-of-her-record">highlighted</a> Jackson&#8217;s record of repeatedly giving lenient sentences to criminals who watched or distributed child pornography.
While Jackson and her allies have defended her record by saying that her sentences were <a href="https://www.factcheck.org/2022/03/the-facts-on-judge-jacksons-sentencing-in-child-porn-cases/">based off</a> the recommendations of probation officers, Hawley and other senators pointed out that Jackson&#8217;s sentences were even more lenient than those recommended to her.
Collins did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Daily Wire on this point.
The Maine senator also told The Times that Jackson had assured her that she would &#8220;forever stay out of&#8221; the issue of packing the court.
“I don’t expect that any of the justices I am going to agree with on every decision — that’s impossible,” the senator added. “But I do want them to be able to be devoid of prejudgement, partisanship, preference and to be impartial and rule consistent with legal precedent, the language of the law and the Constitution.”
When Collins <a href="https://www.collins.senate.gov/newsroom/senator-collins%E2%80%99-statement-supreme-court-nomination">voted against</a> Barrett in 2020, she said that the vote did not have to do with Barrett&#8217;s character.
“Because this vote is occurring prior to the election, I will vote against the nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett,&#8221; she said in a statement. &#8220;To be clear, my vote does not reflect any conclusion that I have reached about Judge Barrett’s qualifications to serve on the Supreme Court.&#8221;
&#8220;What I have concentrated on is being fair and consistent, and I do not think it is fair nor consistent to have a Senate confirmation vote prior to the election,&#8221; Collins added, a sentiment widely expressed by Democrats at the time.

GOP Maine Senator Who Opposed Barrett Confirmation Says She Supports Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson

Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, reportedly called two Republican Senators on their personal phones and lobbied them to support paid family leave. 
According to POLITICO, Markle, who is targeting both Democrats and Republicans, called Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) and Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) to urge them to support paid family leave provisions in the Biden administration’s “Build Back Better” spending bill. 
“I’m in my car. I’m driving. It says caller ID blocked. Honestly … I thought it was Sen. Manchin. His calls come in blocked. And she goes &#8216;Sen. Capito?&#8217; I said, &#8216;Yes.&#8217; She said, &#8216;This is Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex.”&#8230; “I couldn’t figure out how she got my number.”
Collins was equally shocked. “[M]uch to my surprise,” Collins told <a href="https://twitter.com/marianne_levine/status/1455933132805492745?s=20">Politico’s Marianne LeVine and The New York Times’s Emily Cochrane</a>. “&#8230; [S]he called me on my private line and she introduced herself as the Duchess of Sussex, which is kind of ironic.”
“[I] was happy to talk with her. But I’m more interested in what the people of Maine are telling me about it.” 
The calls, according to Politico, were facilitated by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), an outspoken <a href="https://twitter.com/gillibrandny/status/1455921196999094277?s=20">advocate</a> for paid family leave. Gillibrand said she gave the duchess the phone numbers. 
&#8220;I talked to each of the women senators and let them know that she&#8217;s going to reach out, because she only completed two of the calls,&#8221; she said. &#8220;She&#8217;s going to call some others, so I let them know in advance.&#8221;
&#8220;She wants to be part of a working group to work on paid leave long term and she&#8217;s going to be. Whether this comes to fruition now or later, she&#8217;ll be part of a group of women that hopefully will work on paid leave together,&#8221; she added. 
News of the Duchess’s call comes as Democrats have <a href="https://twitter.com/marianne_levine/status/1455933132805492745?s=20">re-inserted</a> a paid family leave provision into the scaled-back $1.75 trillion social spending bill. 
As The Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/pelosi-asks-for-paid-family-medical-leave-to-be-included-in-spending-bill-hearing-after-cut">reported</a> Wednesday, Pelosi sent a <a href="https://www.speaker.gov/newsroom/11321-3">letter</a> to the members of her caucus, asking them to review the text of the Build Back Better Act, and asking the House Ways and Means Committee to take up the paid family leave provision. The letter reads in part:  
<blockquote>It had been my intention throughout this process to put on the House Floor and pass a bill that would pass the Senate in the same form.  Because I have been informed by a Senator of opposition to a few of the priorities contained in our bill and because we must have legislation agreed to by the House and the Senate in the final version of the Build Back Better Act that we will send to the President’s desk, we must strive to find common ground in the legislation.  As we are reviewing priorities and at the urging of many Members of the Caucus, I have asked the Ways and Means Committee for its legislation for Paid Family and Medical Leave to be included in this morning’s hearing.</blockquote>
Paid Family Leave still faces opposition from Capito’s Democratic colleague, Joe Manchin, also of West Virginia. As The Daily Wire reported Wednesday, Manchin’s opposition has previously forced the Biden administration to lower its paid family leave proposal from 12 weeks all the way down to four, before it was cut entirely from the framework outlined by the administration last week.

Stephen King isn’t happy with his senator.
The prolific horror novelist and Maine resident took to Twitter Friday to express his displeasure with Senator Susan Collins (R-ME), <a href="https://twitter.com/StephenKing/status/1433559972193845260?s=20">saying</a>, “Remember when [Collins] said she was convinced that Brett Kavanaugh believed a woman’s right to choose was ‘settled law?’ She was wrong. Women in Texas must pay the price for her gullibility.”
Kavanaugh joined Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, and Amy Coney Barrett in declining to rule on an emergency stay to a new Texas law that protects most pre-born babies starting at six weeks, the point at which a heartbeat can be detected.
The law went into effect Wednesday morning, and that same day King <a href="https://twitter.com/StephenKing/status/1433198266074767369?s=20">claimed</a>, “The Taliban would love the Texas abortion law.”
It’s hardly the first time King has attacked Collins.
Last year, at the height of Donald Trump’s impeachment proceedings, he called for Collins’ ouster, showing a bit of his 1960s protestor roots. “Republican Murkowski, not up for re-election, voted against witnesses,” King <a href="https://twitter.com/StephenKing/status/1223800432721526785?s=20">said</a>, “Republican Collins, up for re-election, voted for witnesses. Both will vote to acquit. It&#8217;s Moscow Mitch at his finest. Hey hey, ho ho, Susan Collins has to go.”
But despite the fact that King remains one of Maine’s most famous sons, he hasn’t had much success persuading his neighbors to his political point of view, a fact that King himself has acknowledged. In 2019, he bemoaned to late-night host Stephen Colbert that “Susan Collins has been there for about a thousand years.”
It’s not quite that long, but Collins is one of the longest-sitting senators in Congress, first taking office in 1997. Many political pundits predicted her vote to confirm Kavanaugh would result in her streak of election wins finally coming to an end. Instead, Collins handily defeated Democratic challenger Sara Gideon in the most expensive Senate race in the state’s history, despite the fact that Gideon outspent Collins more than two-to-one.
King isn’t the only celebrity slamming Collins.
Ellen Barkin gave King the compliment of restraint, retweeting his comment and <a href="https://twitter.com/EllenBarkin/status/1433774324201177088?s=20">adding</a>, “Mr King is a kind man. I’m not. Susan Collins is a liar and a disgrace to her sex.”
“Star Trek” actor George Takei <a href="https://twitter.com/GeorgeTakei/status/1433476924488261640?s=20">said</a>, “Susan Collins was wrong about Kavanaugh and Gorsuch. She sold women out, and Maine voters should never forget that.”
Finally, comedian and podcaster Dana Goldberg <a href="https://twitter.com/DGComedy/status/1433110246503825410?s=20">tweeted</a>, “SO glad Susan Collins had a stern conversation with Kavanaugh and believed Roe V. Wade was established law before she voted to confirm Drunky McRapey.”
King and the others might take some comfort in the fact that Collins may also regret her choice to confirm Kavanaugh. She released a <a href="https://twitter.com/AndrewSolender/status/1433526325046915072?s=20">statement</a> Thursday expressing her disappointment with the Court’s decision, saying:
<blockquote>The Supreme Court recognized that there are &#8216;serious questions&#8217; regarding the constitutionality of the Texas law, and it emphasized that its recent ruling does not address those questions. I oppose the Court’s decision to allow the law to remain in effect for now while these underlying constitutional and procedural questions are litigated.</blockquote>
