WASHINGTON—Iran was using negotiations with the United States to stall for time as it stockpiled materials needed to reach weapons-grade enrichment level, senior administration officials revealed this week. Once President Donald Trump was made aware of the deception, he decided Iran was directly threatening the United States and launched Operation Epic Fury.
The president shared Tuesday that the negotiations made him believe Iran was going to attack first. &#8220;I felt strongly about that,&#8221; he emphasized. Asked whether Israel forced the hand of the United States, he responded, &#8220;No, I might have forced their hand. We were having negotiations with these lunatics, and it was my opinion that they were going to attack first.&#8221;
The president&#8217;s decision stemmed at least in part from Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner&#8217;s time at the table with Iranian negotiators, senior administration officials said on a call with reporters on Tuesday afternoon. Iranian negotiators, during several rounds of meetings, came to the Trump team with an agreement that allegedly addressed the needs of the Iranian people over the next decade.
Because the agreement was needs-based, they asked only for enrichment they might need over the next decade, tying the agreement to a program they have to build out more nuclear facilities. Trump&#8217;s negotiators asked if they could take the agreement back to the United States so they could have other nuclear experts from the CIA, War Department, and State Department weigh in. They were refused.
That was a tell, one senior administration official shared — one of many throughout the exchange.

After reading through the agreement, Witkoff and Kushner were dismayed that the Iranians asked to enrich five times more uranium than was allowed under the Iran nuclear deal. They also discovered a chart at the end of the agreement, on the back of the seventh page, that attested to the amount of enrichment they would need for each new project that they were planning.
Importantly, it centered on the Tehran Research Reactor.
As its name suggests, this reactor was purportedly meant for civilian research, unlike the industrial nuclear reactors destroyed in Operation Midnight Hammer.
&#8220;Everybody all along out there has been under the impression that that&#8217;s what it&#8217;s been doing,&#8221; one senior administration official shared.
Since Operation Midnight Hammer, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has not been able to make inspections in Iran, which senior administration officials said was yet another tell that the Iranians were being deceptive.
Witkoff and Kushner were in conversations with the IAEA about the Iranians&#8217; agreement, and, unfortunately for Iran, the IAEA knew how much existing fuel Iran had at the Tehran Research Reactor. That number was &#8220;roughly seven to eight years of what they need to burn on an annual basis,&#8221; a senior administration official shared.
Witkoff and Kushner did some fast math. They realized that the research reactor had not been making any radioisotopes, and that the seven to eight year supply of fuel that Iran had been retaining there was &#8220;being stockpiled along with all the other stockpiling that had been done at Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan.&#8221;
&#8220;So the claim that they were using a research reactor to do good for the Iranian people was a complete and false pretense,&#8221; a senior administration official shared.
The Trump negotiators recognized that the Iranians are incredibly clever, doing everything internally in Iran to bring that enrichment process to fruition. If the United States had allowed them to continue their work for a year, the administration officials said, Iran could have gone from having 460 kg of weapons-grade material to 1,500 kg of it.
About 42 kg of 90% enriched uranium is required to make one nuclear warhead, according to the IAEA, and Iran had material enough for 11 bombs at the beginning of these negotiations.
Within a short period of time, the senior administration official said, they could have had 1,500 kg of weapons-grade material, meaning Iran would have had not just 11 bombs, but up to 50 bombs.
&#8220;That is literally the place that we were sailing into,&#8221; the official said.

The Iranians were claiming they need research reactors that start at a 20% enrichment rate, saving them roughly two months before they get to weapons grade at 90%, the officials shared, calling this a &#8220;complete lie.&#8221; Witkoff and Kushner figured this all out at the table, and the IAEA &#8220;supported and attested&#8221; to their findings that Iran was never enriching at TRR for civil purposes.
&#8220;They had never made isotopes there,&#8221; explained one administration official. &#8220;They had done a couple of medical tests to sort of disguise what they were really doing, and in reality, what they were doing was they were stockpiling.&#8221;
There were many other things that made Kushner and Witkoff realize the Iranians were being deceptive, but when they discovered what Iran was really doing at the Tehran Research Reactor, above everything else, it was &#8220;very, very clear&#8221; what was really going on. Iran was telling the world they were developing isotopes for medicinal purposes and &#8220;all the while not using any of it for medicinal purposes, in fact, stockpiling for some other use.&#8221;
&#8220;The only other use it could be would be to bring it towards a weapons-grade enrichment level,&#8221; said an administration official.
Witkoff and Kushner went into the meetings determined to assess for the president whether they could make a deal on his primary objectives, and if they could, to find out how long it would take to get that deal done, whether Iran would comply with the deal, and whether it was enforceable.
But clearly, all along, they were trying to hide their nuclear enrichment program underground, one senior administration official said, as well as building another one that doesn&#8217;t have air shafts attached to it — since Operation Midnight Hammer&#8217;s bunker-busting bombs went through the air shafts in order to destroy the nuclear facilities.
Witkoff and Kushner had studied the Iranians and their previous efforts to negotiate with the United States, and they knew ahead of time that the Iranians were adept at making short-term deals to buy time. In this case, the senior administration officials said, it appears that the Iranians were hoping to stall until Trump was no longer president, and the United States might be less observant about how Iran was stockpiling or what deals Iran was able to swing.
Given that the United States was amassing such a powerful force outside Iran, officials were surprised that Iranian officials would not cooperate.
&#8220;We really thought that they would show real movement towards creating a real deal,&#8221; one administration official said. &#8220;All we got were games and tricks and denials.&#8221;
In one telling anecdote, Trump&#8217;s negotiators reminded Iran that their facilities needed to be above ground.
&#8220;Well then it could be bombed!&#8221; the Iranian negotiators reportedly said, to which team Trump told them: &#8220;If there&#8217;s nothing nefarious being done there, then you shouldn&#8217;t be worried about a bomb.&#8221;
&#8220;I think now we&#8217;re seeing with their attacks all over the region, the dangers that they pose and the capabilities that they&#8217;ve created over time,&#8221; a senior administration official shared. &#8220;And that really is what we concluded from the negotiations.&#8221;

In an interview with Fox News&#8217;s Sean Hannity, Trump negotiator Steve Witkoff offered a chilling account of the failed talks that preceded the recent escalation with Iran, arguing that the regime was not seeking a deal but instead was intent on building an arsenal.
Witkoff described the scene where Iranian negotiators, emboldened by years of strategic ambiguity, attempted to strong-arm the United States. According to Witkoff, the regime’s arrogance was on full display from the jump:
<blockquote>So just to give you a little bit of a taste for how these three days&#8230; Negotiations went three separate times, Jared and I opened up with the Iranian negotiators, telling us they had the inalienable right to enrich all their nuclear fuel that they possessed. We, of course, responded that the president feels we have the inalienable right to stop you dead in your tracks. They then went on to say that beyond the inalienable right to enrich, that that was going to be their starting point. And Jared and I just sort of looked at ourselves, flummoxed, and said, well, we&#8217;re really in for it now.</blockquote>
Witkoff said the Trump administration even offered a good-faith alternative to prevent catastrophe: the U.S. would pay for civilian fuel if Iran agreed to cease all enrichment for ten years.
&#8220;We actually had that. And they rejected that,&#8221; Witkoff noted, &#8220;which told us at that very moment that they had no notion of doing anything other than retaining enrichment for the purpose of weaponizing.&#8221;
The most harrowing moment of the interview came when Witkoff laid out the sheer proximity of Iran to a nuclear breakout — a reality the Iranians bragged about during the talks. Witkoff outlined what he described as Iran&#8217;s breakout capacity.
According to Witkoff, Iran currently possesses roughly 10,000 kilograms of enriched material, including approximately 460 kilograms enriched to 60% purity and another 1,000 kilograms at 20%. He argued that the 60% stockpile could be further enriched to weapons-grade levels within days.
Witkoff said Iranian negotiators “said to us directly with no shame that they controlled 460 kilograms&#8221; enriched to 60%, and they were aware that such material could theoretically be converted into enough weapons-grade uranium for as many as 11 bombs.
&#8220;They were proud of it,&#8221; he said. &#8220;They were proud that they had evaded all sorts of oversight protocols to get to a place where they could deliver 11 nuclear bombs.&#8221;
As Hannity noted, it &#8220;defies all logic and reason&#8221; that the regime thought they could dictate terms to Donald Trump while sitting on a nuclear powder keg.
Despite the administration&#8217;s efforts to address the missile program and proxy destabilization, Witkoff concluded it was &#8220;impossible&#8221; to find a viable partner for peace. According to Witkoff, the negotiations revealed how close Tehran was to a potential nuclear breakout, and why the White House concluded diplomacy had run its course.

U.S. envoys met with Russian President Vladimir Putin for over three hours to discuss a potential deal aimed at ending the nearly four-year war in Ukraine.
Trump confidants Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, along with newly-appointed Board of Peace senior advisor Josh Greunbaum, met with Putin at midnight Thursday as the World Economic Forum in Davos comes to a close.
A video clip shared by the Kremlin on Telegram showed Putin, joined by his foreign policy aide, Yuri Ushakov, and special envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, shaking hands with the envoys prior to the meeting.
The group discussed the 20-point peace plan to end the Russian invasion, which has been held up due to key disagreements on Russian demands for land in Eastern Ukraine, much of which Ukraine has successfully defended at this point in the war.
The outcome of the meeting was unclear in the immediate aftermath of the talks, which were held shortly after President Trump said a deal was &#8220;reasonably close&#8221; and Witkoff <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/putin-meets-us-envoys-late-night-talks-ukraine-2026-01-22/">said</a> a deal hinged on one last issue, according to Reuters.
Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hours earlier at Davos, describing the conversation as &#8220;good&#8221; to reporters aboard Air Force One.
&#8220;We&#8217;re discussing things that have been discussed for six or seven months, and he [Zelensky] came, and he said he wants to make a deal because I wasn&#8217;t necessarily sure. I think he should want to make a deal,” Trump said. “President Putin would like to make a deal. I think that President Zelensky would like to make a deal.&#8221;

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Jared Kushner, and U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff appeared at Davos on Thursday as President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace was formally unveiled at the World Economic Forum, where Kushner and Witkoff discussed future plans for Gaza.
The remarks by U.S. officials framed the Gaza agreement not simply as a ceasefire, but as the opening phase of an ambitious attempt to fundamentally reshape Gaza’s future. While Rubio emphasized President Trump’s role in breaking what many viewed as an intractable conflict, Kushner and Witkoff focused on security, governance, and economic transformation as the pillars of a postwar Gaza.
Witkoff described the Gaza deal as something “the world thought was impossible and unattainable,” recalling that when President Trump tasked him and Kushner with the effort, the directive was simple: “We had to try.” He emphasized that the outcome went beyond the return of hostages, saying, “We have achieved a peace deal in Gaza. It doesn’t give these people dignity. It doesn’t give them hope.” Instead, the plan is to apply “free market economy principles” and bring private investment, jobs, and opportunity. “We want to bring the same mindset, the same approach, to a place like Gaza to give these people the ability to thrive and have a good life,” he explained.
“Hamas&#8217;s mission statement was: ‘We need to destroy the state of Israel,'&#8221; Kushner stated. “That has not worked well for the people, as we&#8217;ve seen. &#8230; But without security, nobody&#8217;s going to make investments, nobody&#8217;s going to come build there. We need investments in order to start giving jobs. &#8230; There&#8217;s a master plan. We&#8217;ll be doing it in phasing. In the Middle East, they build cities like this in three years. &#8230; We&#8217;ve already started removing the rubble and doing some of the demolition. And then New Gaza. It could be a hope. Could be a destination, have a lot of industry, and really be a place that the people there can thrive, [and] have great employment. Once this starts going, we think there should be 100% full employment and opportunity for everybody.”
Together, Witkoff and Kushner framed Gaza’s future as a test case for the implementation of peace itself — one that hinges not on speeches or resolutions, but on demilitarization, investment, and the belief that even the most entrenched conflicts can be solved.

The Trump administration said Wednesday that the second phase of President Donald Trump’s 20-point plan to end the war in Gaza has begun, a step aimed at establishing a “technocratic” Palestinian administration and launching the demilitarization and reconstruction of the Gaza Strip.
“Today, on behalf of President Trump, we are announcing the launch of Phase Two of the President’s 20-Point Plan to End the Gaza Conflict, moving from ceasefire to demilitarization, technocratic governance, and reconstruction,” Special Envoy Steve Witkoff <a href="https://x.com/SEPeaceMissions/status/2011478211075391845">announced</a>. 
President Trump is expected to soon unveil the leadership of Gaza’s new technocratic governing body, the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG). The group of unelected experts and professionals will oversee the transitional period as armed groups are dismantled and reconstruction begins.
Witkoff said the United States expects Hamas to “comply fully with its obligations,” including the return of the body of Ran Gvili, the final Israeli hostage held in Gaza.
“Failure to do so will bring serious consequences,” Witkoff said.
The Palestinian Authority <a href="https://x.com/HusseinSheikhpl/status/2011445660499775945">publicly welcomed</a> the launch of the second phase, signaling rare alignment with the Trump administration. 
In a statement, Palestinian Authority President Hussein Al Sheikh said the Palestinian Presidency “welcomes the efforts undertaken by President Donald Trump to complete the implementation of his peace plan,” and announced its support for the NCAG as well as the “Board of Peace.”
The new Gaza governing body will be supported by a Trump-led Board of Peace with former United Nations envoy Nickolay Mladenov as the representative on the ground, Axios <a href="https://www.axios.com/2025/12/26/trump-netanyahu-meeting-gaza-mar-a-lago">reported</a>. 
Al Sheikh said the Palestinian Authority worked in close coordination with Witkoff, Jared Kushner, and Mladenov to move into the second phase. 
“The Presidency expresses its deep appreciation and gratitude for the decisive leadership demonstrated by President Donald Trump, whose direct engagement and determination have contributed to creating a new opportunity for peace, stability, and good governance in Gaza,” Al Sheikh said.
At the same time, Al Sheikh added that he believes it’s important to link the Palestinian Authority institutions in the West Bank to the new governing structure in Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has <a href="https://www.timesofisrael.com/netanyahu-vows-total-victory-against-hamas-says-pa-rejects-israel-cant-rule-gaza/">publicly opposed</a> the Palestinian Authority having oversight in Gaza, citing its long practice of rewarding terrorists for killing Israelis.
Phase One of the plan, implemented in October, established a ceasefire, secured the return of all living hostages and most of the deceased, and delivered a surge of humanitarian aid. 
More than 20 countries signaled support for the ceasefire at President Trump’s Peace Summit in Egypt, including Egypt, Turkey, and Qatar, whose roles Witkoff described as having “indispensable mediation efforts that made all progress to date possible.”

Top officials from the United States and Ukraine met in Florida on Sunday to discuss the framework of a possible peace plan to end the Russia-Ukraine war.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio, special envoy Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and former adviser, met in Miami with Ukraine’s delegation led by Rustem Umerov, the head of head of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council.
“The end goal, obviously, is not just the end of the war, obviously–that’s central and fundamental. We want to see an end of the killing and the death and the suffering, and I’m sure the Ukrainian side, I know they do, as well,” said Rubio in <a href="https://x.com/ralakbar/status/1995151907892154452">remarks</a> before the meeting. “But it’s also about securing an end to the war that leaves Ukraine sovereign and independent and with an opportunity at real prosperity.”
Umerov thanked Trump’s negotiation team for their support in brief remarks after Rubio’s.
“We are discussing about the future of Ukraine, about the security of Ukraine, about no repetition of aggression of Ukraine, about prosperity of Ukraine, about how to rebuild Ukraine. And we are thankful for the efforts of United States and its team to helping us. U.S. is hearing us, U.S. is supporting us, U.S. is beside us,” said Umerov.
The delegations met as the two sides and Russia continue to hammer out revisions to Trump’s original 28-point framework for peace in Ukraine. The starting offer proposed by the United States reportedly received stiff objections from Ukrainian officials over a cap to Ukraine’s military, ceding territory not under Russia’s direct control, and other issues.
“The American side is demonstrating a constructive approach, and in the coming days it is feasible to flesh out the steps to determine how to bring the war to a dignified end,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky <a href="https://x.com/ZelenskyyUa/status/1994823440860078412">said</a>. “The Ukrainian delegation has the necessary directives, and I expect the guys to work in accordance with clear Ukrainian priorities.”
Substantial revisions have since been made to initial peace plan, though the specifics have been guarded from the public. Ukraine has sought security guarantees and rejected suggestions of ceding additional land to Russia. Russia has insisted that Ukraine abandon “occupied territories.&#8221;
Last week, Yuri Ushakov, a top aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin, said that the Kremlin had received the latest version of the peace framework but declined to offer an opinion on it.
“This isn’t an official one, but we do have the document. We haven’t discussed it with anyone yet because the points in it require truly serious analysis and discussion,” said Ushakov, according to <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2025/11/30/europe/ukraine-russia-peace-talks-miami-florida-intl">CNN</a>.

Trump also dismissed concerns that Witkoff is pro-Russian.
“No, I think, look, this war could go on for years, and Russia’s got a lot more people and a lot more soldiers, you know? So I think if Ukraine can make a deal, it’s a good thing. I think it’s great for both,” said Trump.
The phone call sparked backlash from some Republicans, such as Rep. Don Bacon of Nebraska.
“For those who oppose the Russian invasion and want to see Ukraine prevail as a sovereign &amp; democratic country, it is clear that Witkoff fully favors the Russians. He cannot be trusted to lead these negotiations. Would a Russian paid agent do less than he? He should be fired,” <a href="https://x.com/RepDonBacon/status/1993446393076498714">said</a> Bacon.
Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania <a href="https://x.com/RepBrianFitz/status/1993428150492316095">called</a> the phone call “a major problem. And one of the many reasons why these ridiculous side shows and secret meetings need to stop.”
In the October 14 phone call, Witkoff advised Ushakov on how Putin should approach Trump to have the most favorable meeting, including flattering Trump with compliments over the recently struck ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. The U.S. envoy said a similar plan to the 20-point Israel-Hamas plan could be struck between Russia and Ukraine.
Witkoff also advised Ushakov that Putin should schedule a phone call with Trump before Trump was set to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
“Maybe he (Putin) says to President Trump: you know, Steve and Yuri discussed a very similar 20-point plan to peace and that could be something that we think might move the needle a little bit, we’re open to those sorts of things — to explore what it’s going to take to get a peace deal done,” Witkoff said, according to the transcript published by <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-11-25/witkoff-discusses-ukraine-plans-with-key-putin-aide-transcript">Bloomberg</a>.
“Now, me to you, I know what it’s going to take to get a peace deal done: Donetsk and maybe a land swap somewhere. But I’m saying instead of talking like that, let’s talk more hopefully because I think we’re going to get to a deal here. And I think Yuri, the president will give me a lot of space and discretion to get to the deal,” Witkoff said.

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that his team is making &#8220;tremendous progress&#8221; toward ending the years-long Russia-Ukraine war, offering updates on his peace negotiations ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.
Trump&#8217;s Special Envoy Steve Witkoff will meet with President Vladimir Putin in Moscow as his Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll meets with the Ukrainians, the president shared. Though there had been some talk of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky coming to the United States this week, Trump dispelled this rumor, noting that he will only meet with Zelensky and Putin when they have reached a deal.
&#8220;Over the past week, my team has made tremendous progress with respect to ending the War between Russia and Ukraine (A War that would have NEVER started if I were President!),&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;Last month 25,000 soldiers died. The original 28-Point Peace Plan, which was drafted by the United States, has been fine-tuned, with additional input from both sides, and there are only a few remaining points of disagreement.&#8221;
&#8220;I will be briefed on all progress made, along with Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles,&#8221; the president added of his team&#8217;s meetings with the warring world leaders.

“The Ukrainians have agreed to the peace deal,” Driscoll <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/us-holds-secret-meetings-russians-abu-dhabi-ukraine/story?id=127840867" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> ABC News on Tuesday morning. “There are some minor details to be sorted out but they have agreed to a peace deal.”
A White House official told The Daily Wire late Tuesday morning that no meeting between Zelensky and President Trump had been scheduled “at this time,&#8221; and Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also stressed Tuesday morning that “there are a few delicate, but not insurmountable, details that must be sorted out and will require further talks between Ukraine, Russia, and the United States.”
A spokesman for Driscoll, who was part of a Monday evening meeting of U.S. officials with the Russian delegation, said in a statement that “late Monday and throughout Tuesday, Secretary Driscoll and team have been in discussions with the Russian delegation to achieve a lasting peace in Ukraine.”
“The talks are going well and we remain optimistic,” said LTC Jeff Tolbert, who is Driscoll’s spokesman. “Secretary Driscoll is closely synchronized with the White House and the U.S. interagency as these talks progress.”

For the past month, the Trump administration has been &#8220;quietly working&#8221; on a newly devised peace plan between Russia and Ukraine that forces both sides to make concessions, a senior U.S. official told The Daily Wire on Thursday.
Trump&#8217;s special envoy Steve Witkoff has spearheaded the latest effort to bring the war to an end, and President Donald Trump has given his support for the plan, according to the U.S. official.
&#8220;Special Envoy Witkoff has been quietly working on this plan for a month, receiving input from both the Ukrainians and the Russians on what terms are acceptable to them to end the war,&#8221; the official said.
Axios first <a href="https://www.axios.com/2025/11/19/ukraine-peace-plan-trump-russia-witkoff">reported</a> on the plan on Tuesday, writing that the administration hopes to bring Russia and Ukraine to an agreement on a 28-point deal that was inspired by Trump&#8217;s 20-point Gaza peace proposal. Trump successfully got Israel and Hamas to agree to parts of his 20-point plan last month, but that ceasefire remains fragile.
Witkoff has reportedly discussed the plan extensively with Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev. The Russian diplomat told Axios that he, Witkoff, and other Trump officials were in Miami for three days in late October. Dmitriev was optimistic about the talks, saying, &#8220;We feel the Russian position is really being heard.&#8221;

Axios <a href="https://www.axios.com/2025/11/19/trump-ukraine-peace-plan-russia-donbas">reported</a> on Wednesday that the new Trump plan to end the war would require major concessions from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Ukraine would be asked to cede additional territory to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin in exchange for U.S. security guarantees that would protect Ukraine and Europe from further Russian aggression, according to Axios, which cited &#8220;a U.S. official with direct knowledge.&#8221;
The Trump administration pushed back on the claim that Ukraine would be getting the raw end of the deal. A senior U.S. official told The Daily Wire that the peace plan would require both Russia and Ukraine to make concessions.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio <a href="https://x.com/marcorubio/status/1991297619964854460?s=20">said</a> on Wednesday that &#8220;durable peace will require both sides to agree to difficult but necessary concessions.&#8221; Rubio added that the administration is continuing &#8220;to develop a list of potential ideas for ending this war based on input from both sides of this conflict.&#8221;
The Daily Wire also reached out to the State Department for comment.
The war is nearing the four-year mark, and President Trump has so far been unable to move Putin toward a peace deal since coming back into office in January. Trump&#8217;s summit with Putin in August promised progress on a peace plan, but yielded no significant results. Trump has grown increasingly frustrated with Putin and imposed additional sanctions on Russian oil companies. The war, which broke out while former President Joe Biden was in office, has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives, according to estimates. Russia has recently ramped up its attacks on Ukraine, targeting cities with drone and missile strikes.
&#8220;President Trump has been clear since day one that he wants the war between Russia [and] Ukraine to end, and he has grown frustrated with both sides for their refusal to commit to a peace agreement,&#8221; White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement shared with The Daily Wire. &#8220;Nevertheless, the President and his team never gives up, and the United States has been working on a detailed and acceptable plan for both sides to stop the killing and create a durable, lasting peace.&#8221;

Speaking on CBS’s “60 Minutes,” Trump negotiators Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff bluntly rebutted the charge of “genocide” that has been hurled at Israel as it fought its war of survival against the terrorist group Hamas.
Asked by host Lesley Stahl, “Would you say now, having been there, that it was genocide?,” Kushner declared, “No. No,” as Witkoff added, “Absolutely not. No, no, there was a war being fought.”
Kushner detailed what his team sees as the next phase after the cease-fire they arranged, which allowed Israeli hostages taken by Hamas to be returned.
“You can&#8217;t replace a corrupt government with another corrupt government,” Kushner said of Hamas. “So the goal here is to set up a transparent, good government. This can be very, very difficult to do, but we&#8217;re in the very early phases of trying to accomplish that.&#8221;
Stahl said, “Part of the plan is the reconstruction, the building, rebuilding of Gaza. And — you&#8217;re builders. You&#8217;ve been in real estate. As you said, it&#8217;s extremely complex. Tell us more about the plan and how much it&#8217;s gonna cost. Where is the money gonna come from? And who&#8217;s gonna award the contracts?”

“You know, the estimates are in the $50 billion range,” Witkoff replied. “It might be a little bit less; it might be a little bit more. I happen to think that that&#8217;s not a lot of money in that region. You have governments that are gonna jump on in &#8230; you&#8217;ll see European participation and so forth.”
“We have plans already,” he continued. “We have a master plan already. And by the way — and Jared&#8217;s been pushing this and we&#8217;re working together on it — and I think if the world saw the progress so far they&#8217;d be pretty impressed.”
“By the way, none of the reconstruction money is gonna be going in until you have terror-free zones, because nobody wants to invest this money into a place where it&#8217;s just gonna get destroyed again by terrorism,” Witkoff elaborated.
“If Gaza is starting to show signs of being peaceful and not a threat to Israel, there&#8217;s nothing more that Israel would like more than to not have to have a heavy military presence there,” Kushner said.
Stahl turned to the antisemitism that has mushroomed since the October 7 Hamas massacre of more than 1200 Israelis, saying, “It seems that this war has created a rash of antisemitism everywhere.”
“Well, that&#8217;s unacceptable,” Witkoff replied.
“And it&#8217;s even going on in the United States of America,” Stahl pointed out.
“Well, that&#8217;s my point,” Witkoff said, then emphasized that President Trump agreed, adding, “That&#8217;s unacceptable. And that&#8217;s the president&#8217;s position.&#8221;

Former Secretary of State Antony Blinken attempted to credit his boss, former President Joe Biden, with laying the framework for President Donald Trump&#8217;s historic deal in Gaza — the deal that has so far secured the release of all remaining living hostages and will, if followed, end the war between Israel and the terror group Hamas.
Blinken, who was serving as the nation&#8217;s top diplomat when Hamas militants breached the Israeli border and slaughtered more than 1,200 men, women, and children on October 7, 2023, was part of the initial efforts to reach a ceasefire and the return of some 250 hostages who were also abducted on that day. And while he did give President Trump nominal credit for getting an agreement across the finish line, he made it clear that he believed Biden deserved praise for taking the first steps in that direction.
&#8220;In Gaza today, the guns are largely silent. If all goes as planned, the remaining Israeli hostages will return home. Palestinians will get the relief they desperately need and deserve. Nothing can erase the pain and loss of the past two years. He then laid out the reasons he believed the deal had finally come to fruition — beginning with the fact that Hamas had been &#8220;finally and fully isolated&#8221; but failing to acknowledge the Trump administration&#8217;s active role in enforcing that isolation. He also noted that Hamas had learned the &#8220;cavalry&#8221; – meaning Hezbollah, the Houthis, and even Iran — would not come to their aid in Gaza, but again omitted the fact that Trump had put pressure on Iran to ensure exactly that outcome.

&#8220;In the coming days we can expect to see joyful images: of hostages reunited with their loved ones and the people of Gaza getting respite from the war and receiving the help they need,&#8221; Blinken continued, flashing back to the Biden administration and the early ceasefire-for-hostages deals. &#8220;We’ve seen these images before. Under President Biden’s watch, we secured the release of 135 hostages and, in January 2025 we handed over a ceasefire with Israeli forces pulling back, tens of thousands of aid trucks going into Gaza and a post conflict plan for a permanent end to hostilities.&#8221;
The real question going forward, Blinken said, was simple: &#8220;How can we build a lasting peace?&#8221; He then claimed that the Biden administration had developed the plan for Gaza, and that Trump had simply &#8220;adopted and built on&#8221; that.
&#8220;It starts with a clear and comprehensive post conflict plan for Gaza. It’s good that President Trump adopted and built on the plan the Biden Administration developed after months of discussion with Arab partners, Israel and the Palestinian Authority,&#8221; Blinken said.
Trump was neither convinced nor impressed by Blinken&#8217;s claims, and said so to reporters aboard Air Force One. &#8220;Everybody knows that&#8217;s a joke. They did such a bad job. This should&#8217;ve never happened. This wouldn&#8217;t have happened. That was weak leadership, terrible — and the same thing with Russia,&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;Everything they did was the opposite of what you should&#8217;ve done.&#8221;
