At least two people were killed and five people were wounded in a mass shooting on Thursday at Florida State University in Tallahassee.
The university <a href="https://manager.everbridge.net/pub/1987265798990010" target="_blank" rel="noopener">issued an alert</a> at 12:01 p.m. ET, telling students to &#8220;seek shelter and await further instructions&#8221; as an active shooter was &#8220;reported in the area of Student Union.&#8221; Florida State University Police responded to the shooting &#8220;immediately,&#8221; neutralizing the suspect and taking him into custody. The shooter is an FSU student, and neither of the victims who were killed attended the university, Interim FSU Police Chief Justin Maloy said at a press conference Thursday afternoon.
A suspect is in custody, and police are making sure there are no additional shooters, ABC News reported. At 1:04 p.m. ET, FSU sent another <a href="https://alerts.fsu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">alert</a> to students, instructing them to &#8220;continue to shelter in place,&#8221; adding that &#8220;law enforcement is actively clearing rooms on the main campus.&#8221;
Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare said it is &#8220;receiving and caring for patients&#8221; from the shooting, with at least four people being treated for unspecified injuries, NBC News reported. The hospital later updated that number to six people, with one person in critical condition and five people in serious condition. A senior law enforcement official told NBC News that at least one person had died in the shooting. It wasn&#8217;t immediately clear if the fatality was a victim or the shooter.
&#8220;At this time, details are still unfolding, and we do not yet have specific information to share,&#8221; the hospital said in a statement. &#8220;However, we want to assure the community that our teams are fully mobilized and prepared to provide the highest level of care and support to all those affected.&#8221;

President Donald Trump addressed the shooting from the Oval Office during a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, adding that he has been &#8220;fully briefed as to where we are right now.&#8221;
&#8220;It&#8217;s a shame. It&#8217;s a horrible thing, horrible that things like this take place,&#8221; Trump added. &#8220;And we&#8217;ll have more to say about it later.&#8221;

The movie trailer for Alec Baldwin’s Western &#8220;Rust&#8221; dropped nearly four years after the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Hutchins was killed on a New Mexico film set when a gun <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/alec-baldwin">Baldwin</a> was holding discharged a bullet. Writer-director Joel Souza was also injured during the incident.
“In 1880s Kansas, recently orphaned Lucas McCalister (Patrick Scott McDermott) accidentally kills a rancher and is sentenced to hang,” a description with the one-minute plus video on <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oc6q3scsTwg">YouTube</a> read.

In November 2024, Baldwin’s indie western had its world premiere at Poland’s Camerimage <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/t/international/">International</a> Film Festival, with Souza and cinematographer Bianca Cline, who stepped in to finish the film after a wrongful death lawsuit was settled in October 2022, in attendance, <a href="https://variety.com/2025/film/news/rust-trailer-alec-baldwin-first-footage-shooting-1236348441/">Variety</a> noted.
Ahead of the premiere, Souza talked to <a href="https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/story/rust-filmmaker-joel-souza-finally-speaks-about-the-fatal-shooting">Vanity Fair</a> about the fatal shooting, returning to the film set, and finishing the movie Hutchins was shooting, making it clear the fatal scene she had shot had vanished “in its entirety.”
“Gone. Not just that, but also a few things leading up to it,” Souza said. “Everything needed to be entirely reconceived there. There were a few things that came before that now wouldn’t make story sense. So we just sort of eliminated it and came up with something entirely different.”
“I’m not going back to that,” he added. “I’m glad you asked. I don’t want anyone who ever does see this to be waiting for that. No one ever pushed to keep anything like that.”
On October 21, 2021, Baldwin began filming a scene when the gun he was holding fired a live round that killed Hutchins and injured Souza. The 66-year-old actor repeatedly maintained that there was “no trigger pull.”
He was charged with involuntary manslaughter and faced up to 18 months in prison. However, the charges were <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/judge-dismisses-criminal-case-against-alec-baldwin-after-prosecutors-hid-evidence">dismissed</a> on the third day of his trial in July 2024, with the judge ruling that the prosecution had hidden evidence from the defense.
The armorer in charge of weapons on set, Hannah Gutierrez Reed, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for her role in Hutchins’ death.

The Jasper County, Indiana, Sheriff&#8217;s Office released dashcam footage on Thursday showing last month&#8217;s traffic stop where a man pardoned by President Donald Trump was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/man-who-received-j6-pardon-shot-and-killed-during-traffic-stop" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shot and killed</a> during an altercation with a deputy.
Matthew Huttle of Hobart, Indiana — who benefited from Trump&#8217;s sweeping January 6 Capitol riot pardons — allegedly resisted arrest after being pulled over on January 26. Huttle, who was stopped on State Road 14 for driving 70 mph in a 55 mph zone, told the deputy, &#8220;I just want to let you know that I&#8217;m a January 6th defendant,&#8221; according to body cam footage, the Indianapolis Star <a href="https://www.indystar.com/story/news/crime/2025/02/27/body-cam-footage-jan-6-defendants-traffic-stop-shooting-death-released-matthew-huttle-jasper-county/80731312007/#body-cam-matthew-huttle" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
&#8220;What do you mean?&#8221; the deputy asked.
&#8220;I stormed the Capitol. I&#8217;m waiting on my pardon,&#8221; Huttle replied, adding, &#8220;Yeah, and I can&#8217;t really afford to get into any trouble right now.&#8221;
He then admitted to driving without a license. Informed that his felony offense requires that the officer transport him to jail, Huttle said, &#8220;I can&#8217;t do it. No, I can&#8217;t go to jail for this, sir.&#8221;
The bodycam footage appears to have been taken down by YouTube. Dashcam <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-B64wlUUOs" target="_blank" rel="noopener">footage</a> of the incident is still on the platform and shows Huttle sprinting to the driver&#8217;s side door and reaching into the vehicle.

The Clinton County, Indiana, Prosecutor’s Office reviewed the case and said that the deputy chased Huttle before a struggle ensued. After jumping into the car, Huttle allegedly raised a gun and said, &#8220;I&#8217;m shooting myself.&#8221; The prosecutor&#8217;s office <a href="https://www.in.gov/sheriffs/jasper/files/Jasper-County-OIS-Final-Report.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">concluded</a> that the officer &#8220;was legally justified in using deadly force to defend himself.&#8221;
&#8220;Believing that Huttle posed a deadly threat, the Deputy fired multiple shots, striking Huttle. The Deputy then retreated to his vehicle and awaited backup. Lifesaving measures were attempted, but Huttle was pronounced deceased at the scene,&#8221; the prosecutor&#8217;s office said.
During the traffic stop, Huttle &#8220;was found to be a Habitual Traffic Violator,&#8221; a felony under Indiana law, according to the prosecutor&#8217;s office. The 42-year-old Indiana man previously spent time behind bars for a driving offense.
Shortly after being released from jail for his previous offense, Huttle attended the rally at the Capitol in Washington, D.C., on January 6, 2021. He later pled guilty to entering a restricted building after being inside the U.S. Capitol for 16 minutes. Huttle&#8217;s defense attorney, Andrew Hemmer, said that his client was “not a true believer in any political cause” but was only at the Trump rally that day “because he thought it would be a historic moment and he had nothing better to do after getting out of jail.”

Multiple people were shot on Friday when an apparent dispute unfolded adjacent to the Philadelphia Eagles&#8217; celebratory parade following their decisive victory at Super Bowl LIX.

A 42-year-old Indiana man who was pardoned by President Donald Trump last week —after entering the U.S. Capitol building on January 6, 2021 — was shot and killed during a traffic stop on Sunday afternoon.
Matthew Huttle of Hobart, Indiana, allegedly resisted arrest and got into an &#8220;altercation&#8221; with a Jasper County Sheriff’s Department deputy, according to authorities, the Associated Press <a href="https://apnews.com/article/indiana-man-killed-trump-pardon-matthew-huttle-8c674e76c8e3c5ef1610ed29d0669050" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. Indiana State Police said that after Huttle was pulled over, &#8220;an altercation took place between the suspect and the officer, which resulted in the officer firing his weapon and fatally wounding the suspect.&#8221;
Huttle was in possession of a firearm when he was pulled over, the state police said. Authorities did not say why Huttle was pulled over or what led to the confrontation. The officer who shot Huttle has been placed on leave as authorities investigate the fatal shooting.
Huttle&#8217;s attorney, Nick Barnes — who was representing the 42-year-old in multiple pending motor vehicle cases — said he did not know what led to the shooting, according to the AP. Huttle previously spent time behind bars for a driving offense.
In 2023, Huttle pled guilty to entering a restricted building after he was in the U.S. Capitol for 16 minutes on January 6, 2021. Defense attorney Andrew Hemmer said that Huttle was &#8220;not a true believer in any political cause,&#8221; but was only at the Trump rally that day &#8220;because he thought it would be a historic moment and he had nothing better to do after getting out of jail.&#8221;
Huttle, and his uncle, Dale Huttle, were two of the roughly 1,500 people who received pardons from Trump last week after being charged in the January 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol. Trump <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-issues-full-pardon-to-nearly-all-j6-defendants-could-be-released-from-prison-tonight" target="_blank" rel="noopener">signed</a> his executive order granting pardons to nearly all the defendants charged in relation to the Capitol breach just hours after taking office.
“This proclamation ends a grave national injustice that has been perpetrated upon the American people over the last four years and begins a process of national reconciliation,” the order states.

At least two people were killed and seven others were wounded after a &#8220;juvenile&#8221; opened fire at a Christian school in Madison, Wisconsin, on Monday, according to police. The Madison Police Department initially reported that five people, including the shooter, were killed, but later <a href="https://www.facebook.com/MadisonPolice/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> that information was &#8220;erroneously shared.&#8221;
The shooter was found dead when officers arrived on the scene at 10:57 a.m. at Abundant Life Christian School (ALCS) and police immediately began life-saving efforts on the wounded, according to authorities. Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said in a press conference that police believe the shooter was a student at the school, but he did not identify the shooter.
&#8220;The police department did not fire their weapons,&#8221; Barnes said.
The police chief did not say if the victims were students or teachers, saying that the immediate priority was notifying families. Barnes said that the injuries range from minor to life-threatening.
ALCS was beginning its last week before Christmas break. The school <a href="https://www.alcs.us/about/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">offers</a> education for students from kindergarten through 12th grade. ALCS wrote on Facebook after the shooting, &#8220;Prayers Requested! Today, we had an active shooter incident at ALCS. We are in the midst of following up. We will share information as we are able. Essayli is pushing the bill again after a crazed man shot and wounded two kindergartners in Oroville, California, on Wednesday.
Essayli&#8217;s introduction of <a href="https://mcusercontent.com/b095325c1cdf34be3038ad02a/files/1944b4d1-7820-ee63-fa49-6a36d88f23e5/RN2501530_distprint.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Assembly Bill 68</a> comes after Democrats on the Assembly Education Committee shot down the same legislation earlier this year. The Republican assemblyman told The Daily Wire in a phone interview that he wants lawmakers to spend more time focusing on protecting children in schools.
&#8220;Every time one of these shootings happens, it just becomes a 24-hour news story and then goes away. We don&#8217;t ever do anything,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And then the two sides just blame each other. You&#8217;ve got Democrats blaming Republicans for not having more strict gun laws and then Republicans just not offering up any solutions.&#8221;
&#8220;This is not a time for empty rhetoric. This is a time, as policymakers, to look at what can we do to prevent this from happening again,&#8221; Essayli added. &#8220;I strongly believe in school resource officers. I think they&#8217;re specially trained, they carry a weapon, and they&#8217;re able to neutralize a threat immediately on campus. Otherwise, if someone comes up and starts shooting, you have to wait minutes or longer for police to respond and dozens of kids can die in the meantime.&#8221;
While AB 68 would not apply to private schools like the Seventh-Day Adventist school that was targeted on Wednesday, Essayli told The Daily Wire that he wants the legislation to &#8220;set the standard on what we expect at schools and the type of safety and protection we expect for our kids.&#8221; He added that if parents begin to expect to have armed guards protecting their children at public schools, private schools would soon follow &#8220;the lead as well if that becomes the standard.&#8221;
&#8220;I do think it&#8217;s a state responsibility. The state should pay for the SROs. Right now, the local jurisdictions have to bear the costs of hiring and employing those officers,&#8221; Essayli added. &#8220;We should protect our kids. I believe our kids should have just as much protection, if not more, than the politicians have up here in Sacramento.&#8221;
The Republican lawmaker acknowledged that the bill faces an uphill battle in California, arguing that what should be common sense legislation is often stopped by &#8220;backwards logic.&#8221;

The man who shot and critically wounded two kindergartners at Feather River Adventist School on Wednesday <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/shooter-at-christian-school-sought-child-executions-in-response-to-oppression-of-palestinians" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a> that he was seeking out “child executions” in response to “America’s involvement in Genocide and Oppression of Palestinians.” The young victims were identified as 6-year-old Roman Mendez and 5-year-old Elias Wolford. Mendez was shot twice, resulting in internal injuries, and Wolford was shot once in the stomach, also resulting in internal injuries. Both boys &#8220;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/bcsonews/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">successfully</a>&#8221; made it through surgery on Friday, but remain in critical condition, according to the Butte County Sheriff&#8217;s Office.
According to authorities, the 56-year-old shooter scheduled an appointment with the principal to discuss enrolling his grandson. The appointment, however, appeared to be &#8220;a ruse,&#8221; and after the meeting, the man opened fire on the Christian schoolchildren. Authorities said that the shooter had mental health issues and a lengthy criminal record dating back to the early 1990s.

Action News Now <a href="https://www.actionnewsnow.com/news/christian-school-shooter-wrote-that-his-motive-was-american-oppression-of-palestinans/article_dc5e1556-b3eb-11ef-a5e3-372379fa1993.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that the Butte County, California, Sheriff&#8217;s Office obtained the shooter&#8217;s writings, which gave a motive for his attack on the Christian school.
The shooter&#8217;s writings read, &#8220;Countermeasure involving child executions has now been imposed at the Seventh-Day Adventist school in California, United States by the International Alliance. Lieutenant [shooter&#8217;s name] of the Alliance, carried out countermeasure in necessitated response to America&#8217;s involvement in Genocide and Oppression of Palestinians along with attack towards Yemen.&#8221;
Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said authorities found no evidence of the &#8220;International Alliance&#8221; referenced by the shooter, adding that the shooter had a history of mental health issues. As a child, the shooter attended an Adventist school in the nearby town of Paradise. District Attorney Mike Ramsey said it&#8217;s possible that the shooter would have been charged with a hate crime if he had survived.
The shooter met with the principal at Feather River Adventist School in the early afternoon on Wednesday before opening fire and wounding two young boys before turning the gun on himself. The young victims were <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/sacramento/news/palermo-butte-county-feather-river-school-shooting/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">identified</a> as 6-year-old Roman Mendez and 5-year-old Elias Wolford. Mendez was shot twice, resulting in internal injuries, and Wolford was shot once in the stomach, also resulting in internal injuries. Both boys remain in critical condition.

The shooter was a homeless man who moved around the Chico and Sacramento areas, CBS News <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/sacramento/news/butte-county-suspected-shooter-identified/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. The 56-year-old white male was convicted of multiple crimes in the 1990s and early 2000s, including theft, fraud, and forgery. According to Sheriff Honea, the shooter also had a juvenile record.
Just last month, the shooter was arrested in South San Francisco after he was suspected of stealing a U-Haul truck. Law enforcement officers found him in the stolen truck, and he was transported to the San Bernadino County Jail. He pled not guilty and was released from jail on November 21. After he was released, the shooter stayed at various motels in the Chico area, which is about 30 miles north of Feather River Adventist School.
Days before the shooting, the 56-year-old homeless man called the Christian school to set up an appointment where he could discuss enrolling his grandson, according to Honea. After meeting with the principal on Wednesday, the shooter walked toward the exit, but then turned and walked back toward the playground as students were coming back into the building after a break. Honea said surveillance footage showed the shooter reach for his waistband, where Honea said he was holding a handgun. The shooter then began firing the gun and wounded two boys, ages 5 and 6.
The shooter&#8217;s first prison sentence in 1991 came after he was charged with cultivating marijuana and petty theft, according to CBS News. A little over a decade later, he stole the identities of multiple Butte County residents and charged credit cards thousands of dollars for rent, food, and entertainment, District Attorney Mike Ramsey said. After being arrested in 2002, police searched the shooter&#8217;s home and computer and found that he had searched for firearms and explosives, leading investigators to believe he was planning a mass incident with explosives, according to Ramsey.

Brian Thompson, the 50-year-old CEO of UnitedHealthcare who was gunned down in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/new-york-city" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Midtown Manhattan</a> on Wednesday, was one of multiple executives at his company who were being investigated by the Department of Justice for insider trading.
Thompson was shot and killed in what authorities believe was a &#8220;<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/brazen-targeted-attack-nypd-reveals-more-info-on-fatal-shooting-of-health-insurance-ceo?topStoryPosition=3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">brazen targeted attack</a>&#8221; before he made it to the Hilton hotel to take part in his company&#8217;s annual Investor&#8217;s Conference. The New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/12/04/us-news/slain-unitedhealth-ceo-brian-thompson-was-facing-doj-probe-for-insider-trading-report/?utm_campaign=nypost&amp;utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=social" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that Thompson and several other executives at UnitedHealth Group are facing a DOJ probe. United Healthcare is a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group, one of the largest companies in the world.
On February 16 of this year, Thompson sold shares worth $15.1 million just two weeks before the public found out about a federal antitrust probe, <a href="https://www.crainsnewyork.com/health-care/unitedhealth-chair-execs-sold-102m-stock-doj-probe-became-public" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to Crain&#8217;s New York Business. The DOJ was reportedly investigating whether UnitedHealth Group violated antitrust laws by making acquisitions that consolidated its market position. Thompson&#8217;s sale of his shares earlier this year was his first since taking over the company in 2021, according to the Post. Thompson, UnitedHealth Group Chairman Stephen Helmsley, Chief People Officer Erin McSweeney, and Chief Accounting Officer Tom Roos sold a combined $101.5 million in shares.
Another subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group was also targeted in a ransomware attack earlier this year, which resulted in up to one-third of Americans&#8217; data, including social security numbers, potentially being compromised. The company ended up paying a $22 million ransom to the hackers. The ransomware attack cost the massive company an estimated $705 million when business disruption was factored in, Reuters <a href="https://www.reuters.com/technology/cybersecurity/hack-unitedhealths-tech-unit-impacted-100-mln-people-2024-10-24/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.

The suspect, who authorities believe is a male, was wearing a black hoodie and black mask and carrying a gray backpack. After he fired at Thompson, the suspect’s gun appeared to malfunction, but the shooter fixed the jam and continued firing, showing he is likely familiar with using firearms.
Thompson&#8217;s wife told <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/wife-of-slain-health-insurance-ceo-says-husband-received-some-threats" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NBC News</a> that her husband has faced multiple death threats, but added that she did not know the specifics of the threats.
“There had been some threats. Basically, I don’t know, a lack of coverage? I don’t know details. I just know that he said there were some people that had been threatening him,” she said.
Police are offering a $10,000 reward for information on the suspect. Authorities believe he fled the scene on foot before getting on a city e-bike and riding into Central Park.

Health Insurance CEO Was Being Investigated By DOJ When He Was Gunned Down

A video posted on social media shows the moment UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was gunned down in Midtown Manhattan on Wednesday morning.
The video, posted by New York Post reporter Jon Levine, shows the suspect walking up behind Thompson as he approached the Hilton hotel. The suspect shot Thompson in the back, causing the CEO to stumble forward and eventually fall to the ground before the suspect fired more shots at him. A person standing a few feet away from Thompson when he was shot ran past the shooter as he continued firing.
The gun used appears to have had a silencer attached to it, a person familiar with the investigation told <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/12/04/unitedhealth-cancels-investor-day-after-reports-of-executive-shot-in-manhattan.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CNBC</a>. It also appears that after each round, the shooter was either reloading the gun or trying to fix a jam. NYPD Chief of Detectives Joe Kenny said during a press conference on Wednesday that the suspect&#8217;s gun appeared to malfunction, but the shooter fixed the jam and continued firing, showing he is likely familiar with using firearms.

New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at the press conference that the killing appears to be a &#8220;<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/brazen-targeted-attack-nypd-reveals-more-info-on-fatal-shooting-of-health-insurance-ceo?topStoryPosition=3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">brazen targeted attack</a>.&#8221;
“I want to be clear: at this time, every indication is that this was a premeditated, pre-planned, targeted attack,” said Tisch.
The suspect arrived on foot outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan around five minutes before Thompson was seen walking alone without any security detail toward the hotel where his company was holding a conference, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joe Kenny said. The suspect, who police said appears to be a white male, fled the scene on foot before getting on a city e-bike, which he rode into Central Park, according to authorities. The shooter was wearing all black and had a backpack.
Police are offering a $10,000 reward to anyone who has information on the suspect.

Sources told the New York City television station that Thompson was shot near the Hilton hotel on 54th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues. He was rushed to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Police believe it was a targeted attack, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/12/04/nyregion/shooting-midtown-nyc-united-healthcare-brian-thompson.html">according</a> to the New York Times. The police report said the gunman was wearing a black face mask and fled on foot, heading east along 6th Avenue, the Times reported. Police sources told <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/12/04/us-news/ceo-of-unitedhealthcare-fatally-shot-outside-of-hilton-hotel-in-nyc-in-possible-targeted-attack-sources/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the New York Post</a> that the masked man was waiting for Thompson before opening fire on him from 20 feet away — striking him multiple times — and then fleeing on a bike. The Post reported that the suspect is a white male.

The past year has been marred with an ever-present sense of sadness and grieving for Jews worldwide. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/october-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">October 7</a> was our September 11; a day where every Jew can tell you exactly where they were when they heard the horrific news of what occurred to our people in Israel on that day.
Tragically, this sadness and grieving have been coupled with a level of disappointment and abandonment that we never could have anticipated. Disappointment over the lies being spread so quickly about our people. Disappointment over the sheer lack of empathy being shown for the victims. Abandonment by neighbors who seemed to stand up and bolster any other cause that came their way. Abandonment by local leaders who took part in rallies against us.
The first anniversary of the horrors of October 7 recently arrived, bringing to the forefront of our minds just how many of our lives were altered irreparably on that day.
And then the unthinkable happened. This past Saturday I faced my own personal experience of terror and fear when <a href="https://x.com/KassyAkiva/status/1850911640482451926" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a shooter appeared</a> on my street — the street where my children play — with the intention of murdering a Jew. The shooter targeted a family friend of ours who was walking to Saturday morning prayers at our synagogue. He was cruelly shot from behind without warning.
My role on that day was one of bystander and witness. Helpless to stop the horrific act that was being committed right outside my door.
As I rested in bed reading, I heard a loud popping noise; my baby was soundly asleep in the room next door. Only after I heard the screams of the victim did I realize that the noise I was hearing was gunshots.
I looked out the window and saw the shooter running. A thin brown man with thick shiny black hair.
I quickly reached for my phone and dialed 911; an act that felt foreign and surreal.
My neighbors and I were lulled into a false sense of security when the police arrived. Their presence gave us all a sigh of relief as dog walkers reemerged and women walked by pushing their strollers. But fifteen minutes later the shooter reappeared, this time firing at the police.
After the second round of shots, I looked out my window and saw a neighbor hiding behind a tree with his dog. There was a break in the shooting so I opened my front door to offer him refuge inside my home. He jumped when he looked at me and said he was fine. He quickly ran away and I closed my door and returned to the window. I then saw the shooter creep out of my driveway, stand on my neighbor’s lawn and shoot towards my neighbor and his dog.
In that moment, I realized this wasn&#8217;t a typical gang-related crime or a robbery gone wrong. This was terrorism in my front yard. I grabbed a kitchen knife and barricaded myself in my sleeping baby&#8217;s room. I moved furniture, called my parents, and pleaded with the police for help.

Had he seen my giant Israeli/American flag? Would I be able to hide my baby so he would think I&#8217;m alone?
After a few minutes, a neighbor called and told me that the police had <a href="https://x.com/KassyAkiva/status/1850955903442251993" target="_blank" rel="noopener">neutralized the shooter</a> and it was safe to come out.
I spent hours that day talking to the police and showing them videos, even though it was the Sabbath when I do not normally use technology.
When replaying the video with my husband after the Sabbath we heard the chilling war cry of “Allahu Akbar” shouted by the terrorist during his confrontation with the police. If we had been questioning the fact that this was a hate crime before, our question was clearly answered with this footage.
A visibly Jewish man was targeted in a Jewish neighborhood while walking to synagogue on a Saturday morning. The fact that this was a hate crime seemed absolutely clear. We started to send the video clip out to our friends and it spread like wildfire. Soon, news reporters were knocking on my door asking permission to play the video. I was hopeful that showing this video would help the Chicago community understand what happened. Hours were spent talking to reporters and signing consent forms. It felt empowering to be able to contribute and help in some way. The victim needed privacy to recover, but what I needed was to feel like the pain of this past weekend was being acknowledged by the public.
As the days passed, we were shocked by the Mayor of Chicago’s slow, tepid response to this violent act of anti-Semitism. When charges were brought by the DA’s office we were stunned to learn that the shooter was not being charged with a hate crime. It was framed as just another shooting — an all-too-common occurrence in Chicago. To add salt to the wound, the FBI initially withheld his immigration status and place of residence for no apparent reason.
The media coverage of this event brought on the next wave of shock and disappointment. There was no mention of the shooter’s words of “Allahu Akbar” and completely avoided using the words “hate crime” or “anti-Semitism.”
When I reached out to the news editor to question why the video I provided was edited to remove the shooter’s words, I was told that showing that part of the clip was “inflammatory.” Rather than giving viewers and the public an unbiased report of what had occurred outside my front door, the media was concerned about being “inflammatory.” 
What news outlets such as the Chicago Tribune did not seem to find inflammatory was <a href="https://www.chicagotribune.com/2024/10/26/police-man-23-critically-injured-in-far-north-side-shootout-with-officers/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the headline</a> “Police: Man, 22, critically injured in Far North Side shootout with cops.” Presenting the shooter as some kind of potential victim of a police shooting; leaving it up to the reader’s imagination to decipher what may have occurred. This was yet another sickening distortion of the truth by the media, in a year filled with endlessly misleading headlines against Israel and the Jewish nation.
All my efforts to speak to the press and give them the truth have been in vain. The Daily Wire is the only news source that published our video in its entirety. The media is fabricating a world completely divorced from the truth because reality interferes with what they wish to believe is true.

I don&#8217;t see myself ever trusting mainstream media again. If their job is to report on the truth they have utterly failed. I call on my fellow Chicagoans to expect better from our elected officials and the FBI. We need to elect leaders who care about Chicagoans of all races, ethnicities, and religions.
The Chicago Jewish community will continue to grapple with our collective sadness and grieving during this year of heartbreak. We are not victims but fighters and survivors, as history has repeatedly shown. We will continue to join together and confront the anti-Semitism we are surrounded by and offer each other love and support. We will continue giving back to our greater community in positive ways, like we always have. And maybe one day, we won’t need to do it alone.
