Actress Selena Gomez weighed in on the “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/movies">Emilia Pérez</a>” controversy, saying she’s glad she made the film but admitted that some of the “magic” is now gone due to all the backlash.
The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/entertainment">film</a> was flying high with 13 <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/oscars">Oscar</a> nominations – the most of any project this year – before controversial tweets made by the lead actor resurfaced, causing many fans and industry members to turn on the Academy Awards’ first trans-identified male Best Actress nominee, Karla Sofía Gascón.
“Some of the magic has disappeared,” Gomez said of the aftermath of the controversy while speaking at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, per <a href="https://variety.com/2025/film/news/selena-gomez-emilia-perez-controversy-some-magic-disappeared-1236302337/">Variety</a>. “But I choose to continue to be proud of what I’ve done and I’m just grateful. I live with no regrets, and I would do this movie over and over again if I could.”
“Just having someone see something in me besides the obvious was such a special experience,” the actress added. “The director [Jacques Audiard] just really trusted me, and I was so grateful because I’ve gotten to show people that I am capable of doing more. I hope this is just the beginning for me in this field.”
Meanwhile, Audiard has distanced himself from Gascón since the tweets went viral. The director responded to a question about the tweets, saying they are “taking up all the space” in the conversations about the transgender musical drama “Emilia Pérez” and that it makes him “very sad.”
“It’s very hard for me to think back to the work I did with Karla Sofía,” Audiard told Deadline earlier this month, as The Daily Wire previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/emilia-perez-director-disavows-films-star-says-controversial-tweets-are-inexcusable">reported</a>. “The trust we shared, the exceptional atmosphere that we had on the set that was indeed based on trust. And when you have that kind of relationship and suddenly you read something that that person has said, things that are absolutely hateful and worthy of being hated, of course that relationship is affected. It’s as if you fall into a hole. Because what Karla Sofía said is inexcusable.”
The film director also confirmed he hasn’t spoken to Gascón since the news broke. 
The tweets in question include critical statements on Muslims and George Floyd, to name a few. The Golden Globe-winning actor has made multiple apologies, but is still being ostracized in Hollywood.

The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/white-house">White House</a> released a video featuring the mothers of victims who were killed by <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/illegal-immigration">illegal immigrants</a> in response to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/selena-gomez">Selena Gomez</a>’s viral video of herself crying over the Trump administration&#8217;s deportations.
Gomez’s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/selena-gomez-weeps-over-ice-deporting-criminals-including-child-rapists">original video</a> showed her openly weeping due to President Donald Trump&#8217;s policies. “I just wanted to say that I’m so sorry,” she said in the video posted last week. “All my people are getting attacked, the children. I don’t understand. I’m so sorry. I wish I could do something but I can’t. I don’t know what to do. I’ll try everything, I promise.”
The pop star quickly deleted the Instagram Stories post due to backlash, then followed up with the response, “Apparently it’s not ok to show empathy for people,” which she also deleted.
The official White House post is called “Moms of Victims of Illegal Aliens SLAM Selena Gomez: You Didn’t Cry for Our Daughters.” It included pieces of Gomez’s original video alongside reaction interviews with three women, known as Angel Moms, whose children were killed by illegal immigrants. 
The video was shared on X by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, who also tagged Gomez.

“Seeing that video, it’s actually hard to believe that it’s genuine and real, because she’s an actress,” a mom named Alexis Nungaray, whose 12-year-old daughter was killed, said in the video. 
“My daughter was a child. There’s many other children whose lives were taken due to the people who cross here illegally.”   
Tammy Nobles is the mother of Kathy Hamilton, who was raped and murdered in a Maryland mobile home by El Salvadorian national Walter Javier Martinez, per <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/white-house-takes-aim-selena-gomez-video-crying-ice-raids-rcna190292">NBC News</a>. She says in the video, &#8220;You don&#8217;t know who you&#8217;re crying for.&#8221;
&#8220;What about our children who were brutally murdered, and raped and beat to death and left on the floor by these illegal immigrants?&#8221; Nobles asked. “I am so happy that Trump won. I’m so glad that this is one of the first bills to help with immigration,” she said at another point. 
“I just feel like it’s a ruse to deceive people and to garner sympathy for lawlessness,” a mother named Patty Morin says in her response to Gomez’s reaction. “No one has stood up except us mothers to cry out about our children.”
Morin’s daughter Rachel Morin, a mother of five, was discovered dead on Maryland&#8217;s Ma and Pa trail in 2023. A man from El Salvador named Victor Antonio Martinez-Hernandez was arrested in connection with her murder. NBC News noted that he was also being investigated for murder in his home country.
The three women conclude by thanking President Trump for his drive to deport violent illegal immigrants from the country. 
“We stand with President Trump to make America safe again,” Morin said.

Just over a week into Donald Trump&#8217;s second term in office, it has to be said that Kamala Harris&#8217; talking points from the presidential campaign aren&#8217;t exactly aging well. You might remember that one of Kamala’s taglines during the campaign was, &#8220;Donald Trump has an enemies list; I have a to-do list.&#8221; The line was supposed to conjure up a contrast in voters&#8217; minds — a contrast between a president who gets rid of his enemies, and a president who actually gets things done. But it turns out, Kamala&#8217;s campaign misunderstood that those two things are not mutually exclusive. A president can indeed punish the enemies of civilization, and also get a lot of other stuff done at the same time. And that&#8217;s exactly what Trump has accomplished so far, by all accounts.
To be clear, I&#8217;m not bringing this up to trash Kamala Harris, who isn&#8217;t worth thinking about anymore, much less attacking. But as dumb as her campaign slogan was, it&#8217;s clear that many Democrats thought it made sense. And now that Trump is actually in office, they have no idea what to make of it. They can&#8217;t comprehend the fact that Trump is destroying America&#8217;s enemies while advancing American interests, and that voters are responding very favorably to his new administration as a result.
Here for example was the scene the other day on CNN, when the anchor realizes — to her shock and horror — that Trump is now far more popular than he ever was during his first term. Watch:

Once again, there’s the screen guy circling and underlining things for no reason. You don’t need to underline the words on the screen. They’re already typed in giant bold letters. We can see them. Anyway, more to the point, the audible gasp from the CNN anchor is a clue that no one at CNN has any idea how this is happening. How can Trump possibly have a higher approval rating after all of his felony convictions, all of the attacks, and the most well funded and consistently sustained smear campaign against a single individual person in the history of American politics? How is that possible?
It begins to make sense when you realize that the agenda Trump is aggressively pushing through in his first two weeks in office is not — or need not be — partisan or ideological. His executive orders and other actions aren’t necessarily &#8220;conservative&#8221; at all, much less &#8220;Right-wing.&#8221; Instead, Trump is advancing something called &#8220;common sense.&#8221; Common sense has become Right-wing by default. But it’s still common sense. And it happens to appeal to a lot of Americans, regardless of whether they describe themselves as liberal or conservative. Most Americans agree, for example, that people with serious mental illnesses should not serve in the armed forces. That&#8217;s an intuitive concept that doesn&#8217;t need any explanation. Until around 10 years ago, even Democrats wouldn&#8217;t object to that. So when Trump and Pete Hegseth announce that trans-identifying individuals would be <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/01/27/us-news/trump-to-ink-new-executive-orders-today-banning-trans-service-members-military-dei-programs/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">banned</a> from serving or enlisting in the military, as they did the other day, it makes a lot of sense to most people. As the White House put it, “Unit cohesion requires high levels of integrity and stability among service members.&#8221; And because trans-identifying people don&#8217;t meet those requirements, they can&#8217;t serve. Period, end of discussion.

In just the past few days, the Trump administration has announced a variety of straightforward executive orders like this, and every single one of them comes across as a reasonable solution that normal people would support. Trump is also getting rid of DEI in the military, for example, on the theory that America&#8217;s military shouldn&#8217;t be concerned with quotas or diversity hiring. They should focus, instead, on only one goal: fighting America&#8217;s enemies as effectively as they possibly can. Kill the bad guys. That’s your whole job in the military. Again, this is basic stuff. Until fifteen seconds ago, it wouldn&#8217;t even be controversial. Again, this is all just common sense. One by one, that&#8217;s what these orders amount to.
There&#8217;s also Trump&#8217;s planned order creating an &#8220;Iron Dome&#8221;-style missile defense system to protect the United States. We&#8217;ve been funding Israel&#8217;s Iron Dome for many years now, but we don&#8217;t have a comparable system here — even though, as recent events make clear, American cities apparently face a variety of imminent short-range threats. We just had a swarm of drones appear off the East Coast out of nowhere, and a member of Congress suggested that Iranian ships might be launching them. So why shouldn&#8217;t America&#8217;s major cities have some kind of protection against threats like this? Again, it&#8217;s a simple question. And now the second Trump administration is answering it.
Along the same lines, Americans have made it abundantly clear that they don&#8217;t want millions of illegal aliens in this country — no matter how much the corporate press pretends that they &#8220;enrich&#8221; our communities. No serious person thought the status quo was acceptable, especially as the bodies of innocent men, women and children began piling up. And so now, as a result, the status quo is changing.
The other day, Fox <a href="https://x.com/greg_price11/status/1884076445800247469" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that the Del Rio sector of the border has gone from 4,000 illegal crossings per day back in 2023, to just 60 illegal crossings yesterday. These are actual results. And they&#8217;re taking place very quickly.
For self-appointed members of the &#8220;elite&#8221; — particularly in Hollywood — this has been a very difficult series of events to grasp and internalize. They can&#8217;t muster any kind of rational argument against what the Trump administration is doing. They&#8217;re stunned by how effective he&#8217;s been. And they know there&#8217;s no logic behind DEI, or open borders, or letting criminals off the hook with no consequences whatsoever. So instead of presenting any kind of cogent argument, they&#8217;re melting down.
And there&#8217;s maybe no greater example of this phenomenon than the performance that actress and singer Selena Gomez just put on. She uploaded this video to her Instagram story with a caption of &#8220;I’m sorry,&#8221; accompanied by a Mexican flag emoji. Watch:

First of all, before we even get into what she&#8217;s saying, this is obviously an absurd example of emotional manipulation. Anyone who records a video of herself crying and posts it to the internet should be disregarded and ignored automatically. It&#8217;s one thing to cry in public (which is a crime that is slightly less offensive when committed by women, though still highly annoying). It&#8217;s another thing to film the spectacle yourself. But there&#8217;s a more revealing moment that&#8217;s actually worth talking about.
You&#8217;ll notice that in Selena Gomez’s theatrical crying video, she refers to “my people.&#8221; She&#8217;s complaining about the Trump administration deporting her &#8220;people.&#8221; Now if we take &#8220;my people&#8221; in the most literal sense, it would seem to indicate that Selena Gomez is herself a criminal alien — considering that only criminal aliens are being deported. And in that case, obviously, Selena should be immediately placed on one of those C-17 cargo planes and sent back to her homeland. She&#8217;s confessed to her crimes, after all. Trump should deport her based on her word alone. Better safe than sorry. Let her go be with “her people.” And then, of course, we should convert Selena&#8217;s many multi-million-dollar mansions into emergency shelters to house all of these illegal migrants that she&#8217;s weeping over. That would be the humane thing to do.
But if we take the statement as she likely intended it — that her &#8220;people&#8221; are Hispanic migrants in general — then it proves something else, which is that, despite being born in this country, Selena Gomez doesn&#8217;t see herself as American. &#8220;Her people&#8221; are people from another country. It&#8217;s difficult to even imagine someone like Selena ever using the phrase &#8220;my people&#8221; to refer to Americans. That would never happen. It would be nativist and xenophobic. Americans are never supposed to identify with each other in that way. So instead, a half-Mexican, half-Italian billionaire celebrity from Texas identifies with Mexican illegals, many of whom don&#8217;t even speak our language. It goes to show how rampant immigration — both illegal and legal — tears at the fabric of our culture and undermines our national identity. That&#8217;s not the point Selena Gomez was trying to prove. But it&#8217;s the point she did prove.

Here’s the thing, Selena: if you are American, then your people are Americans. The fact that you do not see it that way — do not identify with or feel any loyalty to the country that gave you everything and made you who you are — just goes to show why Trump’s border policies are necessary. Selena, you never made a video hysterically crying when, for example, North Carolina was ravaged by a hurricane and its citizens were left to drown. You never wept over the suffering of “your people,” who’d been abandoned by Joe Biden’s government and left to die. That’s because you don’t see white people in North Carolina as your people. And that is the problem.
So, immigration enforcement is not just about keeping crime and drugs out of our neighborhoods — though that is a big part of it. At a deeper level, it’s about reclaiming a sense of identity and fraternity as a nation. It’s about becoming a people again. Not just people who happen to all live in the same geographic area. But a people. A nation. Anyone who doesn’t want that — anyone who would prefer that we have no identity as a nation — is invited and urged to leave. We don’t need you here. And we don&#8217;t want you.
And a lot of people who are supposedly in Gomez&#8217;s target audience — namely Hispanics — seem to understand this, by the way. The Venezuelan YouTuber named &#8220;Dross,&#8221; for example, <a href="https://x.com/kangminjlee/status/1884005549236482272" target="_blank" rel="noopener">responded</a> to Gomez&#8217;s video by writing: &#8220;Shut up, stupid.&#8221; The backlash was pretty much universal, which is why Selena Gomez quickly deleted the post. Then she wrote a passive aggressive follow-up message that read, “Apparently it’s not OK to show empathy for people.&#8221; And then she deleted that message, too. So she clearly didn&#8217;t have a lot of conviction in what she was saying. The moment her fans let her know they thought she was acting like an imbecile, she took the posts down.
It&#8217;s yet another indication that the whole emotional blackmail routine isn&#8217;t working like it used to. The fact that Gomez was greeted with near universal mockery is a clear sign that things are changing. A few years ago, a sobbing actress would&#8217;ve probably convinced a lot of people that, say, children were being held in &#8220;cages&#8221; at the Southern border or whatever. But it doesn&#8217;t work anymore. We&#8217;ve all been lied to, and manipulated, far too much. And as a result, we now have a government that isn&#8217;t cowed by these kinds of tactics, either.
Yesterday when border czar Tom Homan was asked about Gomez&#8217;s video, he pretty much said he doesn&#8217;t care. Watch:

When entire neighborhoods in North Carolina were destroyed by a hurricane late last year, like we just discussed, the DHS secretary at the time made it very clear that he didn&#8217;t care about any of the victims. He went shopping for clothes in Georgetown, while FEMA — the agency he was supposedly overseeing — denied disaster relief to homes with Trump signs on the lawn. That is the kind of apathy that we&#8217;re all familiar with, when it comes to our federal government.
What the second Trump administration is bringing to the table is a very different kind of apathy. They&#8217;re apathetic to the lazy, emotional blackmail and propaganda that constantly emanates from our so-called &#8220;elites,&#8221; whether they&#8217;re in Hollywood or the media. For the first time in modern history, we have an administration that simply does not care how much liberals are willing to fake-cry on camera. To borrow from Kamala Harris&#8217; campaign slogan, those people are now on the &#8220;enemies list.&#8221; Their opinion doesn&#8217;t matter. Their crying is irrelevant.
What matters now is restoring sanity to this country, and to our government. And the more billionaire actresses like Selena Gomez lose their minds, the more the rest of us can be sure that, after many very dark years, sanity is indeed making a comeback.

President Donald Trump’s border czar, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/tom-homan">Tom Homan,</a> reacted to the viral video of actress Selena Gomez shedding tears over the mass <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/deportationshttps://www.dailywire.com/topic/deportations">deportations</a> that began last week.
In the now-deleted Instagram <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/selena-gomez-weeps-over-ice-deporting-criminals-including-child-rapists">video</a>, Gomez filmed herself crying while saying, “All my people are getting attacked, the children. I don’t understand. I’m so sorry, I wish I could do something, but I can’t. I don’t know what to do. I’ll try everything, I promise.” 
Homan appeared on Fox News yesterday and said he would make no apologies for the actions being taken by the Trump administration. He also denied Gomez’s assertion that <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/immigration-and-customs-enforcement-ice">U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)</a> agents were targeting children. Homan reiterated that the main targets were illegal aliens with criminal records.
&#8220;I met with hundreds of Angel Moms and Dads who are separated from their children because they buried them because they were killed by illegal aliens,&#8221; Homan <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/media/trump-border-czar-has-blunt-message-selena-gomez-wheres-tears-sex-trafficked-children?intcmp=tw_fnc">said</a> Monday during an appearance on &#8220;Hannity.&#8221; &#8220;We got a half a million children who were sex trafficked into this country, separated from their families, put in the hands of criminal cartels to be smuggled into the country. This administration can&#8217;t find over 300,000. Where&#8217;s the tears for them?&#8221;
Homan explained the benefits of these arrests in a separate Fox News interview, saying national security is the main goal. 
“If they don’t like it, then go to Congress and change the law,&#8221; Homan said. &#8220;We’re going to do this operation without apology. We’re gonna make our community safer. It is all for the good of this nation. And we’re gonna keep going. No apologies. We’re moving forward.”

President Trump signed multiple executive orders after his inauguration, which included designating drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations and declaring a national emergency at the southern border.
TV host Dr. Phil <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/dr-phil-joins-tom-homan-for-chicago-ice-raid-convicted-sex-offender-nabbed">went on a ride-along</a> with Homan on Sunday and said he and his team witnessed the arrest of a criminal illegal alien from Thailand who was previously convicted of sex crimes against children. 
As of Monday, ICE <a href="https://x.com/ICEgov/status/1884028870929568021">reported</a> having made 1,179 arrests.

During Sirius XM’s “The Megyn Kelly Show” <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKFd2BSHCn8">podcast</a> on Monday, the host referenced how the 32-year-old actress had posted a video on her Instagram Stories — in which she was crying over the deportations of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/illegal-immigration">illegal alien criminals</a> — but had then deleted it amid backlash, as previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/selena-gomez-weeps-over-ice-deporting-criminals-including-child-rapists">reported</a>.
“First of all, she&#8217;s the one who starred in that ‘Emilia Perez,’ which is up for 13 Academy Awards, who&#8217;s pushing the [transgender] nonsense on Americans and American youth,” Kelly said. “I mean, I wonder if she&#8217;s got a thought for what happens to American youth who gets pushed into this when really all they had was like some family dysfunction and absolutely no gender confusion, but they get caught in this cult that has taken over, especially with young girls.”

“Where&#8217;s her empathy for them? It&#8217;s not present,” she added. “She just wants to be part of the people who push it. So she decides to go on Instagram and cry tears about, ‘Oh my God, all the illegal children,’ I guess, who might be subject to deportation … She deleted it after her fans taught her that the majority of the country stands behind these policies, but I&#8217;m sure she was shocked to get any blowback whatsoever.”
“She’s unwell,” Kelly continued. “Obviously, this is an unwell person … And by the way, anybody who takes their phone works up the tears and posts a video of themselves crying into their phone is sick. That&#8217;s a sick person.”
In the <a href="https://x.com/EndWokeness/status/1883920173360689517/video/1">since-deleted video</a>, Gomez openly wept as she claimed, “All my people are getting attacked,” after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents had started mass deportations of murderers and rapists.
“The children,” the actress said. “I don’t understand.” The story included the caption, “I’m sorry,” along with a Mexican flag. “I’m so sorry.”
“I wish I could do something, but I can’t,” she added. “I don’t know what to do. I’ll try everything, I promise.” 
The “Wizards of Waverly Place” star later deleted the video and added another post which simply read, “Apparently it’s not ok to show empathy for people.”
Border Czar Tom Homan announced on Thursday that ICE agents and law enforcement officers had already made some 1300 arrests through deportation operations since Trump’s inauguration, noting how the vast majority of those arrests focused on individuals who had committed additional crimes, such as pedophiles, gang members, and at least one terrorist, as The Daily Wire previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/homan-ice-has-made-1300-arrests-including-pedophiles-gang-members-and-at-least-1-terrorist">reported</a>.

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/transgender" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Transgender</a> advocates are big mad about Hollywood’s buzziest new trans-centric film.
The musical crime thriller “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/movies">Emilia Pérez</a>” recently swept the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/golden-globes">Golden Globes</a>, bringing home four statuettes for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Foreign Language Film, Best Song, and Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña.
This was after earning the second most nominations in Golden Globes history, including the first Best Actress nomination for a transgender-identifying actor that went to the film’s lead, Karla Sofía Gascón.
Now the movie is generating a lot of Oscars buzz after getting a whopping 11 BAFTA nominations in mid-January. 
Maybe this shouldn’t be surprising since the narrative follows a Mexican drug cartel leader who fakes his own death to undergo gender transition surgery and live a new life. Considering Hollywood’s obsession with radical left-wing gender theory, it would make sense for this movie to be heaped in praise. 
Instead, it’s gotten a ton of backlash for being inauthentic and, interestingly enough, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/transgender">transphobic</a>.
While director Jacques Audiard likely scored points for finding a trans-identifying actor to play the titular role, in the end, that wasn&#8217;t enough: Transgender advocates hated “Emilia Pérez.”
GLAAD, a non-profit that advocates against defamatory coverage of gay, lesbian, &#8220;queer&#8221; and transgender-identifying people, <a href="https://glaad.org/emilia-perez-is-not-good-trans-representation/">called it</a> a &#8220;profoundly retrograde portrayal of a trans woman” and “a step backward for trans representation.”
NPR journalist Reanna Cruz, who uses <a href="https://x.com/bippburger">they/them</a> pronouns and self-identifies as &#8220;queer and trans,&#8221; also complained about the transgender representation, saying it made those individuals look like “liars.”
“The entire time I was watching it I had a really weird feeling in my stomach because to me it seemed like the filmmaker was painting trans women as liars,” Cruz <a href="https://www.npr.org/2024/11/13/1212604211/emilia-perez-is-netflixs-divisive-musical-about-a-trans-cartel-boss">said</a>. “Liars and people that can’t tell the truth and they don’t know who they are. And the songs kind of lean into that. Where half of the songs you have Emilia singing ‘Who am I?’ or talking about ‘I was a he and now I’m a she.’”
A &#8220;queer media&#8221; writer for the website them.com said &#8220;Emilia Perez&#8221; had no good qualities. &#8220;I was ready to find something to like about it — or at the very least, something I would hate so much it would be one of those so-bad-it’s-good movies. But it was neither. I hate, hate, hate this film,&#8221; Fran Tirado <a href="https://www.them.us/story/emilia-perez-awards-season-discussion-transgender-representation">wrote</a>.
Transgender representation wasn&#8217;t the only concern. Another major issue critics had was over the film&#8217;s authenticity.
“Emilia Pérez” follows cartel kingpin Juan &#8220;Manitas&#8221; Del Monte (Gascón), who petitions attorney Rita Mora Castro (Saldaña) for help with staging his death. The entirety of the events are set in Mexico, but the movie’s director is French. The Spanish-language movie was filmed in France. And Audiard? He doesn&#8217;t even speak Spanish.
The director also admitted to not doing much research before making the film. “I didn’t study [Mexico] much,” Audiard said during an <a href="https://x.com/carlasantni/status/1876096636658778365">interview</a> that’s been circulating on X. “What I needed to know I already knew a little bit.”
There’s been much backlash to the film on social media, especially from Mexican viewers who say the portrayal of their country is inaccurate and damaging, particularly when it comes to the portrayal of drug cartels. Viewers also lamented the fact that none of the cast members were Mexican, reigniting a familiar argument about casting actors in roles that don’t match their nationality.

&#8220;This is a message to the Academy: Mexico hates Emilia Pérez. It is a racist, Eurocentric mockery. Nearly 500,000 are dead, and France decides to make a musical with no Mexicans in the crew or cast,&#8221; one popular <a href="https://x.com/siteptbr/status/1876304128701587708">X post</a> says.
Another user on X agreed, writing, &#8220;Emilia Pérez is a case study in how to combine every cliché, ignorance, and lack of respect toward one of the most serious humanitarian crises of our time. Poorly acted, with a weak script, and a disastrously executed musical.&#8221;

“It just doesn’t make sense. A French guy making a movie without really knowing what happens in Mexico, simply unbelievable. Bad acting, dialogues, story doesn’t make sense and so on. Please, for your own good, don’t watch it,” one reviewer <a href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/emilia_perez/reviews?type=user">wrote</a>.
Another agreed, writing, “I am Mexican and I found it completely disrespectful. It looks like a bad comedy made to entertain and promote stereotypes raised from an ignorant perspective of the country they want to represent on screen.”
“Only Murders in the Building” actress Selena Gomez also caught heat for her Spanish speaking skills. &#8220;CODA&#8221; actor Eugenio Derbez spoke out publicly about her Spanish pronunciation during a <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@elviboreo/video/7445195042647477559">podcast</a> appearance in December, saying, “Selena is indefensible.”
Derbez added, “I was there [watching the movie] with people, and every time a scene came [with her in it], we looked at each other and said, ‘Wow, what is this?’”
Gomez responded to the criticism via TikTok, saying, &#8220;I understand where you are coming from. I&#8217;m sorry I did the best I could with the time I was given. Doesn&#8217;t take away from how much work and heart I put into this movie.&#8221;

But plenty of other critics share his feelings.
Despite all the backlash, many critics who do not write for &#8220;queer media&#8221; and industry bigwigs loved “Emilia Pérez.” Kevin Maher from The Times <a href="https://www.thetimes.com/culture/film/article/emilia-perez-film-review-zoe-saldana-selena-gomez-ksk9fr008">said</a>, &#8220;This mad musical is one of the year&#8217;s best films,” while Stephanie Zacharek from Time <a href="https://time.com/7175205/emilia-perez-review-netflix/">said</a> it was &#8220;fierce and glorious, a radical act of the imagination with kindness in its heart.&#8221;
New York Times critic Manohla Dargis agreed, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/11/13/movies/emilia-perez-review.html">writing</a>, &#8220;It&#8217;s Gascón&#8217;s performance that centers and grounds the story.&#8221;
“Titanic” director James Cameron also had rave reviews. &#8220;What I saw that blew me away was Emilia Pérez. I have seen it three times now,&#8221; Cameron <a href="https://youtu.be/1OnDUpjNqiw">said</a> in December. &#8220;It’s just not like any other film that’s ever been made, you know? I mean, I think it’s bold, it&#8217;s daring, it&#8217;s a vision. It’s beautifully executed. It’s a beautiful piece of filmmaking.&#8221;
“Emilia Pérez” currently has a 76% critics rating and a 38% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It is expected to take home some prizes at the British Academy Film Awards and later at the Oscars in March, despite the fact that audiences – even those who you’d think would be cheering for a trans-centric storyline – really, really don’t like it.

In an interview with <a href="https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/story/selena-gomez-cover-interview">Vanity Fair</a>, the 32-year-old actress opened up about her desire to be a mother but admitted her path “will look a little different” after being diagnosed with the auto-immune disease Lupus in 2015 followed by bipolar disorder in 2020.
“I haven’t ever said this &#8230; but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children,” Gomez said. “I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while…”
“[But] I’m in a much better place with that,” she added. “I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me.”

The comments backed up what the singer told <a href="https://www.papermag.com/cher-cover#rebelltitem17" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Paper</a> Magazine on Thursday, which was that she &#8220;never liked&#8221; her &#8220;voice that much. If I had my choice, I probably would have another one, but I didn&#8217;t get my choice. I got my mother&#8217;s voice.&#8221;
Cher&#8217;s reaction to hearing the fake song was similar to Gomez&#8217;s, who recently called it &#8220;scary&#8221; after hearing an AI-generated cover version of a 2016 song by her ex-boyfriend The Weeknd called &#8220;Starboy.&#8221;
The clip featured the fake Gomez voice singing the song with a message translated from Turkish that read, &#8220;How did you find Selena&#8217;s viral cover of Starboy voiced with artificial intelligence?&#8221;

The 31-year-old <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/celebrities" target="_blank" rel="noopener">singer</a> discussed her approach to relationships during an appearance on SiriusXM Hits 1 LA with Tony Fly and Symon on August 31, per <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/selena-gomez-reveals-standards-dates" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fox News</a>. 
“I think I have standards, and I think I live in a world right now where boys confuse standards with high maintenance,&#8221; Gomez said. The hosts had mentioned a line from her song “Single Soon,” in which she said she’s, &#8220;a little bit high maintenance, but I&#8217;m worth a try.&#8221;
&#8220;It really isn&#8217;t [the same thing],&#8221; the “Calm Down” singer went on. &#8220;But the line was really fun because I&#8217;m not ashamed to say, &#8216;I actually require X, Y, and Z for you to be with me.&#8217; So, in a way, it was just meant to be for the attitude of the song. And that&#8217;s genuinely how I feel.&#8221;
As for what she’s looking for in a romantic partner, Gomez insisted she only needs the basics, which involves being “cool.”
“Not cool in the sense that people think you&#8217;re cool,&#8221; she said. &#8220;You just gotta be nice and, like, please make me laugh and also just be good to my family and people around you.&#8221;
&#8220;That&#8217;s a good X, Y, Z,&#8221; co-host Fly said, to which Gomez responded, &#8220;Yeah, I think so. We&#8217;ll see.&#8221;
