Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) on Thursday grilled New York Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul during a hearing on sanctuary states over crimes committed by illegal aliens.
Stefanik, who is rumored to be eyeing a run for governor, first highlighted executive orders signed by Hochul that maintain New York as a sanctuary state, meaning the state will not cooperate with federal authorities on illegal immigration. Then, the Republican listed a series of heinous crimes committed by illegals, including the violent sexual assault of minors and one illegal immigrant burning a sleeping woman alive on the subway.
&#8220;Governor Hochul, on your first day in office, you signed Executive Order 1,&#8221; Stefanik said. &#8220;And you extended this executive order not once, not twice, but three times &#8212; most recently January 16 of this year.&#8221; 
The order, Stefanik read, was a continuation of sanctuary state policies. &#8220;It is the policy of the state that state officers or employees shall not disclose information to federal immigration authorities for the purpose of federal civil immigration enforcement,&#8221; she read. &#8220;It goes on to say, &#8216;Law enforcement officers may not use resources, equipment, or personnel for the purpose of detecting and apprehending any individual suspected or wanted for violating a civil immigration officer. Law enforcement officers have no authority in the state of New York to take any policy action solely because the person is an undocumented alien.&#8221; 
Hochul attempted to contend that the order actually says New York will cooperate with federal immigration authorities.
&#8220;No, it does not say that,&#8221; Stefanik shot back. &#8220;I read what it says, and let me talk to you about the results.&#8221; One illegal immigrant, she said, &#8220;found a 15-year-old girl, threatened her with a metal pole, told her to get into the back seat of his car. He took her clothes off, and he violently raped her in Albany, New York.&#8221; 
In another example, the governor said she was unfamiliar with the illegal immigrant Stefanik was talking about. &#8220;I bet you&#8217;re going to be familiar when I remind you,&#8221; Stefanik told Hochul. &#8220;He found a sleeping woman on the subway, lit her on fire, and burned her alive.&#8221;
&#8220;This is in Kathy Hochul&#8217;s New York,&#8221; the representative said. &#8220;And as I&#8217;m sure you are aware, and I&#8217;ll remind you: [U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement] issued an order to detain this violent criminal, but that was rejected by New York officials due to sanctuary state laws.&#8221;
Hochul responded by calling the crimes &#8220;horrific&#8221; and contending New York works with ICE.
&#8220;You did not in this case,&#8221; Stefanik responded. &#8220;They are walking on the streets because of your policies and your executive order that you signed three times.&#8221; 
Stefanik then outlined sexual assaults against minors, ages 11 and five. &#8220;You&#8217;re not advocating for these victims,&#8221; she said. &#8220;This is a five-year-old who was raped on Long Island in Nassau County.&#8221;
&#8220;You are not advocating on behalf of these victims,&#8221; Stefanik repeated. &#8220;You are shielding illegals. Even in your opening statement, you prioritize putting illegals first.&#8221; 
&#8220;Rapes of young girls, beatings of NYPD cops by illegals who are here under Kathy Hochul&#8217;s failed policies, burning New Yorkers alive,&#8221; Stefanik added. &#8220;This is Kathy Hochul&#8217;s New York.&#8221;

Weeks before an illegal immigrant threw a Molotov cocktail at a group of pro-Israel demonstrators in Colorado, Democrats in the state passed legislation that would make it even harder to identify criminals like the man who told authorities he had been planning the attack for a year while illegally in the country.
Mohamed Sabry Soliman, a 45-year-old Egyptian national and illegal alien, is believed to have entered the United States on a visa before he was granted work authorization by the Biden administration, which he overstayed after it expired in March. Federal court <a href="https://x.com/BillMelugin_/status/1929583795805524440">filings</a> say that Soliman not only admitted to the attack, but said that he wanted to kill all “zionists.”
Just weeks before the attack, Colorado Democrats passed legislation aimed at hindering Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) ability to find and deport illegal aliens. The bill, signed by Governor Jared Polis in late May, <a href="https://coloradoimmigrant.org/governor-signs-sb25-276-into-law-strengthening-constitutional-rights-for-immigrant-families-and-all-coloradans/#:~:text=Denver%2C%20CO%20%E2%80%94%20Today%2C%20Governor,Coloradans%E2%80%94regardless%20of%20immigration%20status.">bars law enforcement</a> in the state from respecting ICE detainer requests, which the federal agency uses to gain custody of illegal aliens who have been placed in local jails after being arrested for crimes.
The legislation was marketed as a way to counter the Trump administration&#8217;s crackdown on illegal immigration by Democrats in the state.
“One of the reasons why I appreciate this bill so much is that it is one of few that is really taking seriously the crisis that the federal administration poses for immigrants in particular and for marginalized people generally,” <a href="https://coloradonewsline.com/2025/05/03/colorado-immigrant-protection-bill-as-justice-department-sues-state/">said</a> Democrat state representative Yara Zokaie.

The law <a href="https://coloradonewsline.com/2025/05/03/colorado-immigrant-protection-bill-as-justice-department-sues-state/#:~:text=The%20bill%20would%20prohibit%20local,warrant%20signed%20by%20a%20judge.">prevents</a> city and county governments from sharing data, like identifying information and immigration status information, with ICE, making it significantly harder for the federal law enforcement agency to track down illegal aliens in Colorado.
It also imposes steep penalties on those working with ICE. State agencies and local governments could be fined up to $50,000 for violating the law, with the money earmarked for a state-run deportation defense fund.
Called the <a href="https://ona.colorado.gov/our-work/immigration-legal-defense-fund">Immigration Legal Defense Fund</a>, the initiative “provides free immigration legal services to help Coloradans and those detained in Colorado with their immigration court proceedings.” Potential beneficiaries of the program only have to demonstrate that they are in Colorado, have been placed in deportation proceedings, and cannot afford legal defense.
White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller <a href="https://x.com/StephenM/status/1929354625104109637">pointed</a> to “suicidal migration” policies as one of the factors that led to the terror attack in Colorado.
“A terror attack was committed in Boulder, Colorado by an illegal alien. He was granted a tourist visa by the Biden Administration and then he illegally overstayed that visa. In response, the Biden Administration gave him a work permit,” Miller said.  “Suicidal migration must be fully reversed.”

Trump border czar Tom Homan has been leading ICE raids in cities across the country targeting criminal illegals. But some so-called “sanctuary” city officials are working to hinder the crackdown.
Congressman Andy Ogles (R-TN), who sits on the Homeland Security Committee, announced this week that he&#8217;s launched an investigation into the office of Nashville Democratic Mayor Freddie O’Connell amid claims that city officials are actively obstructing ICE. Mayor O’Connell issued an <a href="https://www.tennessean.com/story/news/local/davidson/2025/05/28/what-to-know-mayor-freddie-oconnell-response-nashville-ice-operation/83901113007/">executive order</a> requiring civil servants in Nashville to report communications with federal immigration officials to the mayor’s office and has condemned ICE raids for causing “deep community harm.”
“MS-13 and Tren de Aragua, they&#8217;re all over the country,” Ogles told The Daily Wire. “They&#8217;re in Nashville. They&#8217;re in our small cities like Columbia and Tullahoma … this is a message to cities and mayors across the country. If you impede federal law enforcement in their duties, in their directive to follow President Trump, to say, it&#8217;s time that we start deporting these folks, we&#8217;re going to be looking into your city, and where appropriate, we&#8217;re going to hold you accountable.”
Ogles also noted that Nashville is a “through city” that is centrally located (within a 6-hour drive of many of America’s major population centers) and could be used as a waystation for human trafficking and the drug trade if the cartels are allowed to establish a foothold. “The violent gangs in Central and South America, they want strongholds in Nashville. And I&#8217;m not going to stand for it.”

The EU-U.S. Forum is taking place this week in Hungary – the goal of the summit is to challenge the leftist ideas put forward by the European Union and unite Western leaders to fight back against the EU’s harmful policies. A major focus of the summit will be “Europe’s Free Speech Problem.”
This week, a number of senior State Department officials are heading to Ireland and Paris to push both countries to respect the speech rights of their citizens. A senior State Department official told The Daily Wire that the trip is part of the department’s effort to fight back against violations of basic natural rights in Europe, especially freedom of speech, religion, and the right to privacy.
“What happens in one country will impact the U.S.,” White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller told The Daily Wire. “Ultimately, when they start putting restrictions on their free speech, then other outlets, whether it be a social media platform, whether it be technology platforms such as Apple or Google or things of that nature, when free speech is suppressed, then ultimately what&#8217;s gonna happen is so many of those same policies will be put in place in the United States.”

Topline: Republicans have grown frustrated with the independent agency known as the “Congressional watchdog.” They say the Government Accountability Office (GAO) has too often let politics dictate its findings rather than the facts.
According to its website, the GAO is an independent, non-partisan agency that works for Congress. It typically looks at how federal funds are spent and how executive agencies implement certain policies, and it makes reports to inform lawmakers. Recently, Republicans say that the GAO has been infected by politics. This lack of trust comes as the GAO has conducted probes into dozens of Trump administration spending freezes.
Last week, the GAO said that the Department of Transportation violated the Impoundment Control Act to freeze a Biden-era electric vehicle charging program. That earned a rebuke from Russell Vought, the director of the Office of Management and Budget. He wrote on X that the GAO is “going to call everything an impoundment because they want to grind our work to manage taxpayer dollars effectively to a halt.”
Congressional Republicans are also unhappy with the GAO. Last week, Congress voted to strip a Clean Air Act waiver from California, which would have authorized the state to effectively ban new gas-powered vehicles by 2035. Before the vote, the GAO said that Congress couldn’t use the Congressional Review Act to pull the waiver – that set Republicans in the Senate off.
“For the first time ever, the Government Accountability Office has decided to insert itself into the process and affirmatively declare that an agency rule submitted to Congress as a rule is not a rule,” Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) said. “It’s an extraordinary deviation from precedent for an agency that should be defending Congress’ power instead of constraining it.”
Meanwhile, Elon Musk thanked President Trump on Wednesday as his official government role in the administration comes to an end. It’s been a rough ride for the world’s wealthiest man, from the attacks on his companies to the frustrations of government bureaucracy. This week, Musk seemed somewhat bitter about the political process, especially surrounding the passage of the “Big, Beautiful Bill.”

The slow drip of stories on Biden’s decline has turned into a waterfall. On Tuesday, the authors of the new bombshell book &#8220;Original Sin&#8221; – CNN’s Jake Tapper and Axios’ Alex Thompson – revealed the existence of what they called a “politburo” of longtime advisors who were, if not making the decisions for President Biden, heavily influencing his decisions: Mike Donilon, Steve Burschetti, Ron Klain and Bruce Reed.

We’ve also learned that during the 2024 campaign, Biden’s team spent millions of dollars organizing a staged town hall event, with hand-picked attendees asking friendly, pre-written questions. The plan was for clips of that orchestrated event to be used in TV ads. But according to reporting in the new book, the 90-minute event was a disaster, with Biden unable to string together coherent answers. As one staffer put it, “the man could not speak.” It was so bad that the campaign never aired any footage, blaming poor lighting instead of the president’s mental capabilities. That story and countless others have drawn outrage from folks asking just how many people were involved in concealing Biden’s cognitive decline.
Much of that outrage has been directed at the former president’s inner circle, but people are also asking questions about the media’s role. For years, many of the country’s most prominent outlets and news anchors parroted White House talking points that President Biden was totally fit for office and locked in behind closed doors. For example, just to pick a name out of the hat, in a 2020 interview with Lara Trump, Tapper himself was <a href="https://x.com/LaraLeaTrump/status/1806420367415914571">so incensed</a> by claims that then-candidate Biden was showing signs of cognitive decline that he ended the interview early. Tapper has since admitted that conservatives were right all along for questioning Biden’s mental fitness.
But plenty of people don’t buy the excuse that the legacy media were totally in the dark about Biden’s mental and physical decline and believe journalists are only changing their tune now because they’re trying to save their credibility.
“Now that Joe Biden has no power anymore and can&#8217;t hurt them, now that he is a cancer-ridden old senile man, they are lining up to kick him,” author and journalist Batya Ungar-Sargon told The Daily Wire. “Acting like somehow they deserve credit for speaking truth to power now that he no longer has any more power.&#8221;

They got about 50,000 people in beds. We&#8217;re funded for 34,000. Ice is already in the hole, so if we want to continue this massive deportation operation, we need more money.”
Homan said that if Congress authorizes the spending, ICE will prioritize getting more teams on the streets and more bed space for detainees, as well as more frequent flights to remove illegal aliens from the United States more quickly.
“There&#8217;s no downside on a secure border and there&#8217;s no downside in less trafficking of women and children. There&#8217;s no downside in less fentanyl, there&#8217;s no downside in less people on terrorist watch list coming across, there&#8217;s no downside in taking billions of dollars away from the cartels. There&#8217;s no downside in removing public safety threats and national security threats from this country. We should all be on the same page. So step up, get this done. In Maine, males who identify as transgender are allowed to participate in female sports – which, according to all polling, is not a policy supported by the American people, even in a liberal state like Maine.
“The Democrat majority in the Maine House voted to censure me and at the same time to strip my constituents of their voice and their vote,” Libby told The Daily Wire. “Following that, the censure vote is when Speaker Ryan Fecto declared that until I apologize, I would not be allowed to speak or vote on the floor.”
Libby refused to take down her Facebook post and would not apologize. For that, she’s been stripped of her right to vote and speak on the House floor for months. Libby told The Daily Wire she knew &#8220;immediately&#8221; that she had to take legal action to challenge her punishment. She lost at the district and appeals court levels, before she appealed to the Supreme Court in April. The court sided with Libby and ruled 7-2 that she can vote while her legal battle is playing out. There were only two dissents, from liberal justices Ketanji Brown Jackson and Sonia Sotomayor. 
The Trump administration is still fighting the state’s Democratic Gov. Janet Mills over her decision to defy President Donald Trump&#8217;s executive order barring males from girls&#8217; spaces and sports. The feds have frozen federal funding for the state, and last month, Attorney General Pam Bondi <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/bondi-unleashes-on-maine-announces-new-lawsuit-against-state-for-violating-title-ix">announced a civil lawsuit</a> against Maine’s Department of Education.

That health system was a <a href="https://www.opensecrets.org/officeholders/janet-t-mills/contributors?cycle=2022&amp;id=9941379">top donor</a> to Mills’ 2022 gubernatorial run and offers irreversible “procedures” for gender-confused minors, such as puberty blockers, and what they call “gender affirming hormone therapy,” and “menstrual suppression.”

After teenaged illegal immigrants belonging to &#8220;Los Diablos de 42,” described as a “farm team&#8221; of the Venezuelan Tren de Aragu gang, <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/newyork/news/nypd-officers-attacked-teenage-gang-times-square/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">attacked NYPD officers</a> on Friday in Times Square, New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch <a href="https://www.fox5ny.com/news/tren-de-aragua-gang-violence-times-square" target="_blank" rel="noopener">acknowledged</a> that NYPD is coordinating with federal agencies, but added, &#8220;The NYPD does not engage in civil immigration issues—period.&#8221;
Homan slammed Tisch, saying to Fox News’ Laura Ingraham, “These people are in the country illegally, and the first thing the police commissioner did up there  — she’s ordered an internal affairs investigation. Did someone call ICE? Because we happened to be at the precinct where some of these people were being processed by happenstance, but now all of a sudden there’s an internal affairs investigation.”
“Who called ICE? We just proved to the city commissioner, we proved to the city council, that wants to lock us out of Rikers Island, that working with Mayor Adams &#8230; we indicted 27 members of TdA through a RICO investigation. &#8230; These are people who are murder-for-hire, drug traffickings, sex trafficking, gun trafficking. We took 27 TdA off the street. ICE, with the cooperation of the NYPD, we showed what our partnership can do.”
In mid-April, the New York City Council <a href="https://council.nyc.gov/news/2025/04/15/new-york-city-council-files-lawsuit-to-stop-mayor-adams-illegal-executive-order-inviting-president-trumps-ice-into-rikers-to-set-up-office-seeking-courts-immediate-halt-of/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">filed a lawsuit</a> asking for a temporary restraining order (TRO) and a preliminary injunction against Mayor Eric Adams’ <a href="https://www.nyc.gov/assets/home/downloads/pdf/executive-orders/2025/eo-50.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Executive Order 50</a> to invite ICE to operate an office in the Rikers Island jail.
“They’re already pulling back now,” Homan continued. “So the commissioner is more concerned with who called ICE rather than working with ICE to get these people not out of the street, (but) out of the country. &#8230; This is just another example of sanctuary cities not cooperating with ICE and look what happened: NYPD officers are attacked. If you&#8217;re brazen enough to attack an armed law enforcement officer, you&#8217;re much more dangerous to an unarmed civilian.”
Asked by Ingraham what his message was for three illegal immigrants “still on the loose,” Homan replied, “We’re comin’ for ‘em.” He continued, “These are the type of people that AOC brags, ‘Why I’m educating people on their constitutional rights.’ We all know what she’s doing. She’s educating criminals now to evade law enforcement.”
“Well, you know, I’m gonna do a little educating myself: You don’t want to open the door; you don’t want to answer a question; you don’t want to help us with the travel documents that get you removed, that’s a violation of Title VIII, United States Code 1253. It’s a crime. And we’re going to start prosecuting those crimes tomorrow.”
“If you got a final order, and you want to hinder your removal, you want to put roadblocks up and not cooperate, you want to hide and not open the door, then the agency is gonna start prosecuting you criminally,” he warned. “Then, after you get out of jail from that prosecution, then we deport you. Game’s over. We’re gonna look for these public safety threats and we’re gonna take ‘em off the streets in New York and every other sanctuary city. As a matter of fact, every sanctuary city, we’re gonna triple the workforce. We’re gonna flood the zone with officers. If we can’t arrest them in the jail, we’re gonna arrest them in the community. If we can’t arrest them in the community, we’ll arrest them at their worksite.”

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday to crack down on sanctuary jurisdictions impeding federal immigration enforcement.
The directive requires the Justice Department to compile a list of all sanctuary city jurisdictions and then take action to cut off or suspend federal funding to those places. Under Trump, cities across the country, like Boston, have already made it difficult for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to apprehend illegal immigrants.
&#8220;This invasion at the southern border requires the Federal Government to take measures to fulfill its obligation to the States,&#8221; Trump wrote in the executive order. &#8220;Yet some State and local officials nevertheless continue to use their authority to violate, obstruct, and defy the enforcement of Federal immigration laws. This is a lawless insurrection against the supremacy of Federal law and the Federal Government&#8217;s obligation to defend the territorial sovereignty of the United States.&#8221;
After the list of sanctuary jurisdictions is published, those entities would be given the chance to comply with federal law. If they don&#8217;t comply, they could lose federal funding.
The executive order also directs the Justice Department and Homeland Security to ensure that federal benefits are not provided to illegals in sanctuary jurisdictions and to &#8220;take appropriate action to stop the enforcement of State and local laws, regulations, policies, and practices favoring aliens over any groups of American citizens that are unlawful, preempted by Federal law, or otherwise unenforceable.&#8221;
The White House <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/fact-sheets/2025/04/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-protects-american-communities-from-criminal-aliens/">provided</a> examples of sanctuary jurisdictions refusing to cooperate with ICE. For example, authorities in Massachusetts declined to hold multiple illegal immigrants accused of raping children. The White House also said that officials in Philadelphia ignored an ICE detainer on a Honduran man who went on to rape a child.
Earlier this month, Trump called sanctuary jurisdictions &#8220;death traps&#8221; and promised to cut off federal funding.
&#8220;No more Sanctuary Cities! They protect the Criminals, not the Victims. They are disgracing our Country and are being mocked all over the World,&#8221; he posted on Truth Social. &#8220;Working on papers to withhold all Federal Funding for any City or State that allows these Death Traps to exist!!!&#8221;
While some jurisdictions have doubled down on their sanctuary status, New York City Democratic Mayor Eric Adams has walked back some of his city&#8217;s lax immigration policies. Earlier this month, he <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/nyc-mayor-adams-reverses-sanctuary-policy-restores-ice-presence-on-rikers-island" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> that ICE would be allowed to resume operations at Rikers Island jail to target criminal gangs and drug trafficking, reversing a previous policy banning the agency from the facility. Adams did specify that NYC would work with ICE on criminal matters, not civil.

Trump border czar <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/tom-homan" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tom Homan</a> said this week that he will fully support the local police officers who are being targeted for helping U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement ICE personnel in a New York sanctuary city.
Officers from the Rochester Police Department (RPD) are being targeted by Rochester&#8217;s Democrat Mayor Malik Evans and Police Chief David Smith for responding to a call for backup from ICE agents on Monday, and allegedly handcuffing individuals when on the scene. The department has even opened an internal investigation into the matter.
&#8220;The officers on the scene verbally directed the occupants to get out of the vehicle, and this is against our policy,&#8221; Mayor Evans said at a press conference this week, 13 WHAM News <a href="https://13wham.com/news/local/rochester-police-officers-accused-of-violating-policy-while-assisting-border-patrol-agents" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
&#8220;Our policy is crystal clear. City police officers do not help or participate in federal immigration activities,&#8221; Evans said, referring to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/lawmakers-grill-sanctuary-city-mayors-on-illegal-immigration-live-updates" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sanctuary city policy</a>. &#8220;Every RPD officer — I&#8217;ve instructed the chief — every officer receives more training on general orders to make sure all members are fully aware and fully understand this policy.&#8221;
&#8220;From watching the body-worn camera footage, what is concerning to me is despite the fact that we were called, we went lights and sirens,&#8221; Chief Smith said. &#8220;I see in the video a total lack of urgency on the part of multiple Border Patrol officers at the scene.&#8221;
&#8220;We are not to be handcuffing subjects,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We are not to be doing pat frisks on subjects, and we are absolutely not going to be detaining them or putting them into our cars.&#8221;
Homan has repeatedly offered his support for these officers who helped ICE, saying that he&#8217;s planning to come to Rochester and that &#8220;help is coming.&#8221;
&#8220;I stand with the officers of the Rochester, New York Police Department that answered the emergency assistance call from the U.S Border Patrol,&#8221; the border czar said in a statement on X. &#8220;The men and women of the Border Patrol have never refused the request for assistance from any law enforcement agency when they are available. That is the way it should be. Law enforcement officers should not be abandoned in the time of need because of politics.&#8221;
&#8220;Sanctuary policies endanger our police and the public,&#8221; he added. &#8220;President Trump and AG Pam Bondi are committed to taking them on and so am I. Help is coming!&#8221;

On Tuesday night, the city council of Worcester, Massachusetts passed a resolution 9-2 to make the city a “sanctuary” for people who identify as transgender.
The <a href="https://www.telegram.com/story/news/local/2025/02/12/resolution-declaring-worcester-transgender-sanctuary-city/78456433007/">resolution</a> states, “The City Council of the City of Worcester hereby reiterates its commitment to transgender rights and equal protections for transgender community members and declares itself a sanctuary city and a place of safety for transgender and gender diverse people &#8230; the City of Worcester recognizes the importance of gender-affirming healthcare as a matter of health, privacy, and equality &#8230; the City of Worcester hereby maintains it should be a policy of the City of Worcester that no city resources be utilized for cooperating with or providing information to any individual or out-of-state agency or department regarding the provision of gender-affirming healthcare or gender-affirming mental healthcare performed in Worcester and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts &#8230; the City of Worcester as a sanctuary city will not cooperate with Federal and State on policies aimed to harm transgender and gender diverse people &#8230;”
Councilor-at-Large Thu Nguyen, who claims to be “non-binary,” returned after having announced a hiatus and leaving the council in mid-January, alleging “transphobia” and being “misgendered” within the council, the Telegram and Gazette <a href="https://www.telegram.com/story/news/local/worcester/2025/02/12/nguyen-returns-as-council-backs-sanctuary-for-transgender-gender-diverse/78430723007/">reported</a>.
Councilor-at-Large Donna M. Colorio, who voted against the resolution along with Councilor-at-Large Morris A. Bergman, wanted to delay the vote because she was worried the city would lose federal funding.
“While echoing Colorio’s arguments, Bergman was often interrupted by taunting from the audience, including snorting sounds, which had to be quelled by Petty’s gavel,” the Telegram and Gazette noted. “A voice from the second floor of the chamber also hurled insults in German at him.”
“Fascism is trying to bully and intimidate people to think the way you think,” Bergman stated, adding, “What new rights does this resolution give that don’t already exist? I can’t say with 100% confidence that something that doesn’t add any more protection than already exists isn’t going to cause harm to the other 200,000 people in the city of Worcester.”
Worchester is the second-largest city in New England.

The mayors of Boston, Chicago, Denver, and New York City were invited to testify before the House Oversight Committee regarding their sanctuary city policies for illegal immigrants.
“Sanctuary jurisdictions and their misguided and obstructionist policies hinder the ability of federal law enforcement officers to effectuate safe arrests and remove dangerous criminals from American communities, making Americans less safe,” committee chairman Rep. James Comer (R-KY) wrote in the letters to each mayor.
Comer’s letter requested documents and information related to each city’s sanctuary policies and invited Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, Denver Mayor Mike Johnston, and New York City Mayor Eric Adams to testify on February 11.

Comer also accused sanctuary jurisdictions of taking it “upon themselves to decide what laws they will and will not abide by all for the purpose of shielding removable aliens, especially criminals, from federal law enforcement.”
While there are 12 states and hundreds of cities that qualify as sanctuary jurisdictions, Comer said Boston, Chicago, Denver, and New York City “stand out in their abject failure to comply with federal law.”
Chairman Comer will be <a href="https://x.com/GOPoversight/status/1883998691507462467/photo/4">launching an investigation</a> into the mayors, according to a post on X by the House Oversight Committee.
“All four major cities are sanctuary jurisdictions that refuse to fully cooperate with federal immigration enforcement, which is impacting public safety and the effectiveness of federal efforts to enforce the immigration laws of the United States,” the tweet states.
The Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/boston-mayor-doubles-down-on-defying-trump-deportations-as-ma-police-arrest-migrants-for-child-rape">previously reported</a> on Wu’s plans to defy Trump&#8217;s deportations in November, stating she had no intention of rolling out the welcome mat” for the Trump administration.
“What we can do is make sure that we are doing our part to protect our residents in every possible way; that we are not cooperating with those efforts that actually threaten the safety of everyone by causing widespread fear and having large-scale economic impacts,” Wu said at the time.
Trump border czar Tom Homan responded to Wu, questioning her intelligence and stating that she should either help or “get the hell out of the way,”
“She’s not very smart, I’ll give her that,” Homan said. “President Trump’s going to prioritize public safety threats. What mayor or governor doesn’t want public safety threats out of their communities? That’s your number one responsibility, to protect your communities, and that’s exactly what we’re going to do.”

Republicans launched a seven-figure ad campaign on Wednesday targeting <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/north-carolina" target="_blank" rel="noopener">North Carolina</a> Democratic gubernatorial nominee Josh Stein over illegal immigration as they attempt to flip the state red. 
The spot from the Republican Governors Association attacks Stein, North Carolina’s current attorney general, for claiming there are &#8220;no sanctuary cities&#8221; in the Tar Heel State. Stein is running against Republican Lt. Governor Mark Robinson to replace outgoing Democratic Governor Roy Cooper in November. 
In a <a href="https://www.rga.org/rga-launches-initial-seven-figure-ad-campaign-north-carolina-gubernatorial-race/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">video</a> called “Weak,” Stein&#8217;s denial of sanctuary cities is compared with comments from Davidson County Sheriff Richie Simmons, who says that there are counties in the state that don’t cooperate with federal immigration authorities. According to Simmons, multiple criminal illegal immigrants, including a sex offender, were released because of counties “refusing to cooperate with deportation officials.” 
The video will play on cable, broadcast, and digital platforms. 
“‘Weak’ exposes Josh Stein for lying to North Carolina families as he claims there are ‘no sanctuary cities’ in North Carolina when the reality is that counties across North Carolina are taking dangerous stands and refusing to cooperate with immigration officials,” the RGA said in a press release. 
Sanctuary policies have been a major issue in North Carolina in the last year. The Republican-controlled legislature attempted to pass a bill that would have mandated sheriffs to cooperate with federal immigration authorities. The bill eventually <a href="https://www.ncleg.gov/BillLookUp/2023/h10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stalled</a> out during <a href="https://ncnewsline.com/briefs/controversial-bill-requiring-sheriffs-to-cooperate-with-ice-hits-a-snag-in-nc-house/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">negotiations</a> over language between House and Senate Republicans, but the proposal would have required sheriffs to hold suspects for federal immigration authorities upon request.

Robinson <a href="https://x.com/markrobinsonNC/status/1786522439377121605" target="_blank" rel="noopener">previously said</a> that he would have signed the legislation into law. 
“My opponent refuses to say whether he supports this commonsense bill to put North Carolinians first and keep our communities safe because he can’t risk alienating his radical Left, open borders allies before Election Day,” Robinson said after the Senate passed a version of the bill. “But if history is any indicator, we know where Josh really stands: Stein has a long history of supporting left-wing sheriffs who refuse to enforce the law, and any Attorney General who can’t stand up for law and order should NEVER be governor.”
According to the Center for Immigration Studies, multiple counties in North Carolina, including Orange, Durham, Mecklenburg, Wake, Buncombe, and Forsyth, have policies that impede federal immigration authorities, The Carolina Journal <a href="https://www.carolinajournal.com/senate-passes-bill-requiring-sheriffs-to-cooperate-with-ice/">reported</a>. 
The election between Robinson and Stein is expected to be tight. Stein currently holds onto a slim 0.2% lead in an <a href="https://www.realclearpolling.com/polls/governor/general/2024/north-carolina/robinson-vs-stein" target="_blank" rel="noopener">average</a> of polls. Trump has a five-point advantage over Biden in the state, which he won in both 2016 and 2020.

A group of illegal immigrants in Denver is refusing to relocate from a tent encampment to shelters unless Democratic Mayor Mike Johnston agrees to their list of 13 demands.
They are currently living in tents under a bridge and near train tracks as the Denver Human Services Department attempts to get them into city-funded migrant shelters, Fox 31 <a href="https://kdvr.com/news/local/group-of-migrants-send-denver-mayor-list-of-demands/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. The illegal immigrants, however, want the city to agree to numerous provisions for migrants staying in shelters, including allowing them to cook their own meals with &#8220;culturally appropriate ingredients provided by the City&#8221; and giving them free consultations with an immigration lawyer.
&#8220;[T]he City will provide on-going legal support in the form of immigration document clinics &amp; including transportation to relevant court dates,&#8221; the list of demands states.
Jon Ewing, a Denver Human Services official, said the city is concerned about the migrants remaining in the encampment and being exposed to the elements.
“We’ve been offering time and shelter, basically just trying to get families to leave that camp and come inside,” Ewing said. “Which comes with three square meals a day. You can cook your own if you like to.”
Illegal immigrant advocate V Reeves said there isn&#8217;t enough food provided by the city in the shelters, and sometimes the food that is provided is &#8220;spoiled.&#8221;

According to <a href="https://kdvr.com/news/local/group-of-migrants-send-denver-mayor-list-of-demands/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fox 31</a>, the illegal immigrants&#8217; list of demands are:

<li>Migrants will cook their own food with fresh, culturally appropriate ingredients provided by the City instead of premade meals – rice, chicken, flour, oil, butter, tomatoes, onions, etc… Also people will not be punished for bringing in &amp; eating outside food.</li>
<li>Shower access will be available without time limits &amp; can be accessed whenever – we are not in the military, we’re civilians.</li>
<li>Medical professional visits will happen regularly &amp; referrals/connections for specialty care will be made as needed.</li>
<li>All will receive the same housing support that has been offered to others. They cannot kick people out in 30 days without something stable established.</li>
<li>There needs to be a clear, just process before exiting someone for any reason – including verbal, written &amp; final warnings.</li>
<li>All shelter residents will receive connection to employment support, including work permit applications for those who qualify.</li>
<li>Consultations for each person/family with a free immigration lawyer must be arranged to discuss/progress their cases, &amp; then the City will provide on-going legal support in the form of immigration document clinics &amp; including transportation to relevant court dates.</li>
<li>The City will provide privacy for families/individuals within the shelter.</li>
<li>No more verbal or physical or mental abuse will be permitted from the staff, including no sheriff sleeping inside &amp; monitoring 24/7 – we are not criminals &amp; won’t be treated as such.</li>
<li>Transportation for all children to &amp; from their schools will be provided until they finish in 3 weeks.</li>
<li>No separating families, regardless of if family members have children or not. The camp will stay together.</li>
<li>The City must schedule a meeting with the Mayor &amp; those directly involved in running the Newcomer program ASAP to discuss further improvements &amp; ways to support migrants.</li>
<li>The City must provide all residents with a document signed by a City official in English &amp; Spanish with all of these demands that includes a number to call to report mistreatment.</li>
