There’s this mic-drop line in the trailer for Leonardo DiCaprio’s new film, “One Battle After Another”: “It’s not that hard, they/them.” 
When my husband and I heard it in theaters, we couldn’t help but shoot one another a look. We weren’t outraged; frankly, we were exhausted.
That zinger was clearly written to earn brownie points from a woke crowd, but it landed like a prepackaged corporate slogan. Any potential hype from the action movie trailer tanked the way an advertisement does when it tries too hard to sound like a movement.
But that’s where we’re at now. Even Hollywood trailers have a virtue-signal quota that writers type into scripts as proof that the studio has passed ideological inspections.
We’re not the only ones tired of it, apparently, since the whole notion of non-binary identities appears to be collapsing in on itself.
Sociologist Eric Kaufmann recently published data on <a href="https://x.com/epkaufm/status/1978074195767480659">X</a> that went viral, showing that the number of young people identifying as a non-binary “gender identity” — and even those identifying sexually as “queer” — has dropped dramatically.

Meanwhile, heterosexual identification quietly, and unfashionably, has seen a rebound.
That’s not political backlash, however. People are fatigued by a fading trend.
For years, “gender identity” meant more than personal exploration. Frankly, it felt like a public performance. The internet made it oh-so-contagious; Hollywood made it fashionable. Then corporations made it profitable.
But the more that identity became a virtue to pander or a brand to adopt, the less authentic it felt.
I can think of no better example than actress and singer Demi Lovato, as her story shows the emotional cost better than any statistic. Her struggles were, as many child stars’ are, very public and very difficult to watch: childhood trauma, addiction, near-fatal overdoses, long stretches of recovery, and then a relapse. But in 2021, amidst all that turmoil, Lovato “came out” as non-binary and deemed her pronouns “they/them.”
At the time, she described her new identity as freeing, one that made sense. But let’s be honest, freedom built on instability isn’t lasting. By the next year, she quietly started using “she/her” pronouns again and told interviewers she had become “exhausted” by constantly explaining herself. Focus on that word. She wasn’t just fatigued by correcting strangers, she was clearly weary of trying to rebuild her life through a faulty label based on fiction.
Kaufmann’s research suggests that Lovato’s identity arc clearly mirrors what’s happening on a larger scale. The boom in “trans” and “non-binary” identifications also happened to coincide with historic spikes in depression, anxiety, and loneliness — especially during COVID-19 lockdowns. But now, as self-reported mental health appears to have improved, those identities appear to be declining.
One may not have directly caused the other, but the overlap is worth pondering. For many, that “non-binary” label could have been a survival mechanism of sorts, a way they could name their inner chaos and get it off their chest in a culture that began looking down on traditional anchors like family and even faith. And once Lovato returned to “she/her,” she signaled to the public she was in recovery. This summer, she even <a href="https://www.eviemagazine.com/post/demi-lovato-s-case-study-and-why-women-are-more-prone-to-mimetic-desire">married</a> her Canadian beau, looking absolutely stunning in a traditional white wedding dress to boot.

Even Hollywood gets the picture that the magic is wearing off. For years, Netflix and other leading platforms turned representation into their marketing strategies. They inserted gender lessons into everything from teen dramas to children’s cartoons.
The 2021 children’s animated show “Ridley Jones,” for example, had a talking bison come out as “non-binary” and ask his grandma to use “they/them” pronouns. The show was “quietly dumped” two years later, as <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11863181/Netflix-quietly-dumps-Ridley-Jones-bison-comes-non-binary-grandma.html">Daily Mail</a> put it, once that novelty wore off.
This show, and many other forms of pandering media, are storytelling failures. Audiences don’t want to watch a sermon or get lectured. They just want entertainment, and they instinctively recognize when something that once felt radical is now conventional.
So, we’re witnessing the rise and fall of a trend cycle. A movement went viral, institutions codified it, corporations co-opted it, and then … many followers moved on. It started as “liberation,” but it became the branding du jour, which always collapses under its own fickle weight.
Between the data points, I see something hopeful happening. People are quietly rediscovering that they don’t need to reinvent themselves to feel or be whole. To them, I say, “Welcome home.”
For years, authenticity was socially measured by how fluid you were willing to be, but now it matters more how anchored you can stay in the storm. We’ve spent a decade being told that “normal” is oppressive, but normalcy is looking hotter than ever.
And maybe people won’t want to admit they were wrong — I get it. No one likes to admit they had it all mixed up. But when my husband and I heard that “mic-drop” in the movie theater, we didn’t react with cynicism. We recognized that culture has reached a point where even the symbols of rebellion have become clichés.
That’s why this new data is less like a regression and more like a release. After years of confusion, people aren’t running backward, I promise. They’re running home to simplicity and to the peace of saying, “I’m fine with being me.”

Today, the Supreme Court will hear <a href="https://adflegal.org/case/chiles-v-salazar/">Chiles v. Salazar</a>, a case about censorship in private counseling conversations regarding gender identity not sanctioned by Colorado state law. The results will have a lasting influence not only counselors, parents, and children in Colorado, but throughout the United States.
I know, because our family learned the hard way when our 11-year-old daughter went to her school counselors in Wisconsin for advice. 
So many times, just being able to talk about things with someone who knows how to listen can make a life-changing difference. What our family learned, however, was that these people did not know how to listen. They were interested in making a life-changing difference, yes, but mostly in changing my daughter’s life to suit their social sensibilities, not to do what was best for her.
COVID hit at just about the same time my daughter entered into a very real personal crisis. She was 11 years old and decided she hated herself. She hated her looks, hated her personality — everything. The isolation of the epidemic left her with too much time to think about all of that and too few people to talk to about what she was feeling.
Sometimes, as a kid, it can help to know that other kids around the same age are struggling with the same issues. But our daughter was mostly alone with all her growing worries, fears, and frustrations. She didn’t know how to talk to me about what she was feeling, and she started reading about kids who were &#8220;changing&#8221; themselves. That sounded like the answer to everything: changing herself.
Looking back, she says, she doesn’t think she was really feeling that much gender dysphoria. She wasn’t especially wanting to be a boy — she just didn’t want to be herself.
That turned out to be very easy to arrange. In fact, a teacher’s aide approached my daughter and said that, if she wanted to give the people in the front office a new name and new pronouns, they’d happily take care of the paperwork.
They might have suggested that she first talk a little more with her parents about what she was feeling and give us a chance to listen and help her work through these things. But no one — not the school officials, not the doctors she eventually talked to — ever suggested anything like that.
To them, what we as her parents thought and felt was irrelevant. Our love for our child and our authority to influence her life choices didn’t matter at all. All of these strangers just assumed they knew best and had the right to keep her parents out of the conversation.
For that matter, they didn’t include our daughter much, either.
At no time did anyone at school or in the medical facilities our daughter visited ever suggest that there might be a healthy alternative to her social transitioning. They never suggested that she might just be struggling with the kinds of things lots of boys and girls have trouble with — dealing with the pains and awkward changes of puberty and the problems of fitting into a sometimes-crazy teenage culture.
That’s why my husband and I <a href="https://adflegal.org/case/tf-and-bf-v-kettle-moraine-school-district/?utm_source=dailywire&amp;utm_medium=oped">sued</a> our Wisconsin school district with the help of our attorneys with Alliance Defending Freedom. As parents, we have had to really fight for what should be a given — our basic legal right to be involved in our child’s life. And — with our love and support — she had to find her own way out of the confusing jungle of emotions she was dealing with.
We’re glad she was able to do that, but we still wonder how much easier it might have been if someone with the right skills had just been there to help her find the trail — and if her school officials hadn’t tried so hard to block her from finding it.

That’s also why we’re so interested in another ADF client, Kaley Chiles, and <a href="https://adflegal.org/case/chiles-v-salazar/?utm_source=dailywire&amp;utm_medium=oped">her case</a> being argued before the U.S. Supreme Court today. Ms. Chiles is a counselor who wants to offer help to young people like our daughter, who are going through the kinds of things she’s been going through.
We’ve read a lot about her. She does what it seems like a counselor ought to do. She listens. She asks thoughtful questions. She helps young people figure out where they want to go and how to get there. She’s there to walk with them — not push them through a pre-chosen door or force her own ideas on their disturbed minds and hurting hearts.
To me, that’s what every young person going through what my daughter went through needs. But in Ms. Chiles’ home state of Colorado, it’s actually against the law for a counselor to help a minor that way.
My own state has a similar law. And these laws allow counselors to point the way to transitioning and encourage it, but they can’t offer an alternative or do anything to support a young person who leans toward another conclusion.
That reminds me so much of what my daughter has experienced these last few years. People — professionals — with no interest in helping her, just in changing her.
Ms. Chiles’ attorneys will be making good arguments for why that’s a terrible approach … one that can be life-changing for children and teens in all the wrong ways.
I just hope the justices know how to listen.

The Department of Homeland Security openly mocked media outlets in a Wednesday post, claiming that their use of the phrase &#8220;undocumented immigrant&#8221; was no less ridiculous than the use of &#8220;they/them&#8221; pronouns to indicate gender identity.
The official X account for DHS shared a graphic that showed several cut-out headlines, all of which used the term &#8220;undocumented immigrants&#8221; instead of &#8220;illegal aliens&#8221; when referring to those who were in the United States illegally.
&#8220;Undocumented immigrant accused in fatal drunken driving crash to remain jailed,&#8221; one read, and another said, &#8220;Eleven undocumented immigrants arrested in Seymour.&#8221; A third read, &#8220;Who are they undocumented immigrants in Texas.&#8221;

Several people responded to the post comparing the headlines to what author George Orwell and scholar William Lutz referred to as &#8220;doublespeak&#8221; — a strategy that often employs the use of watered-down phrasing or euphemisms to make things that are objectively bad seem less so.
Lutz also spoke of using technical jargon ambiguity rather than common terminology or specific language in order to cloud the meanings of things one did not want the public to think about too deeply.
&#8220;Doublespeak poses a threat to the United States because it creates a buffer between what organizations are saying and what people are hearing,&#8221; Lutz explained in an <a href="https://www.ericschwartzman.com/why-doublespeak-is-dangerous/#:~:text=The%20doorman%20on%20a%20building,to%20manufacturers%20of%20malfunctioning%20products.">interview</a>.

President Donald Trump&#8217;s White House has decided to ignore all emails from reporters who include preferred pronouns as part of their email signatures, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated.
“As a matter of policy, we do not respond to reporters with pronouns in their bios,” Leavitt wrote in response to an inquiry from a New York Times reporter.
Leavitt is not the only Trump administration official who has adopted such a stance. According to a New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/04/08/business/media/white-house-journalists-pronouns.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a>, Katie Miller — senior adviser for the Department Of Government Efficiency (DOGE) project — has also issued a similar statement.
&#8220;As a matter of policy, I don’t respond to people who use pronouns in their signatures as it shows they ignore scientific realities and therefore ignore facts,&#8221; Miller said via email. In another message, she added, &#8220;This applies to all reporters who have pronouns in their signature.&#8221;
Leavitt also doubled down on the policy when The NYT requested a comment, saying via email, &#8220;Any reporter who chooses to put their preferred pronouns in their bio clearly does not care about biological reality or truth and therefore cannot be trusted to write an honest story.&#8221;
White House Communications Director Steven Cheung took a similar tone, telling the outlet, &#8220;If The New York Times spent the same amount of time actually reporting the truth as they do being obsessed with pronouns, maybe they would be a half-decent publication.&#8221;
President Donald Trump and multiple officials have taken a hardline stance on radical gender ideology, declaring early in the administration via <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/01/defending-women-from-gender-ideology-extremism-and-restoring-biological-truth-to-the-federal-government/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Executive Order</a> that the United States federal government would only recognize two genders that align with the biological sexes.
The administration has also drawn a hard line on men in women&#8217;s spaces, particularly with regard to high school and collegiate athletics. Following an Executive Order barring males from competing on girls&#8217; and women&#8217;s sports teams, the Trump administration <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-admin-gives-maine-10-days-to-comply-with-wh-block-males-from-female-sports" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cut funding</a> to schools that failed to comply, prompting a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-demands-full-throated-apology-from-maine-gov-after-state-caves-on-womens-sports-fight" target="_blank" rel="noopener">policy reversal</a> in Maine.
Trump Education Secretary Linda McMahon stated the policy plainly via X, <a href="https://x.com/EDSecMcMahon/status/1909604941850726584">saying</a>, &#8220;To all the entities that continue to allow men to compete in women’s sports and use women’s intimate facilities: there’s a new sheriff in town. The Trump Administration will not allow you to get away with denying women&#8217;s civil rights any longer.&#8221;

Actress Cynthia Erivo, who stars in the musical drama “Wicked” opposite Ariana Grande, just said in a speech at the GLAAD Media Awards that it’s “hard” not being referred to by preferred pronouns.
The 38-year-old British star made the remarks during the event at the Beverly Hilton last week, where she was awarded the Stephen F. Kolzak award, which is <a href="https://www.thepinknews.com/2025/03/28/cynthia-erivo-pronouns-glaad-awards/">given to</a> an “openly queer member of the entertainment or media community for their work toward eliminating homophobia.”

&#8220;They, them. Words used to describe pedantically two or more people, (and) poetically a person who is simply more,&#8221; Erivo said.
She continued, &#8220;It isn&#8217;t easy to ask people to treat you with dignity, since you should just have it, because it&#8217;s a given. It isn&#8217;t easy to learn to grow who you are if the world around you is knocking at your door, telling you to stay inside. Some flowers bloom against all the odds, like the peony, but most flowers need to be tended to and cared for before they brave the light and open up their petals to the sun.&#8221;
&#8220;Here in this room, we&#8217;ve all been the recipients of a gift that is the opportunity to be more. I doubt that it has come easy to any of us, but more for some, the road has not been one paved with yellow bricks but instead paved with bumps and potholes − whichever road you have traveled, how beautiful it is that you&#8217;ve had a road to travel on at all. There are the invisible ones who have had no road at all.&#8221;
&#8220;We are all visible,&#8221; she concluded. &#8220;We can be seen… I ask every single one of you in this room, with the spaces that you&#8217;re in and the lights that you hold, to point it in the direction of someone who just needs a little guidance.&#8221;
Erivo faced significant backlash for her complaints and for saying anyone who uses neopronouns, which are usually gender-neutral or &#8220;nonbinary,&#8221; is “more.”

An Ohio teacher who resigned after refusing to use students’ preferred pronouns and names will receive a $450,000 settlement from her school district.
Vivian Geraghty sued the Jackson Local School District in 2022, and the settlement was reached last month, the New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/01/04/us-news/ohio-teacher-vivian-geraghty-who-refused-students-preferred-pronouns-wins-450k/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> over the weekend. She was aided in her suit by Alliance Defending Freedom, which released <a href="https://www.nbc4i.com/news/local-news/central-ohio-news/450000-settlement-for-ohio-teacher-who-refused-to-use-students-pronouns/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a statement</a> to NBC4 late last week.
“The school tried to force Vivian to accept and repeat the school’s viewpoint on issues that go to the foundation of morality and human identity, like what makes us male or female, by ordering her to personally participate in the social transition of her students,” said Logan Spena, legal counsel for ADF. “The First Amendment prohibits that abuse of power, and Jackson Local School District officials have learned that comes at a steep cost.”
Geraghty said in her lawsuit that she was told to resign from the district’s middle school language arts position. The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio ruled in August that being forced to use preferred pronouns and names or face disciplinary action amounted to “compelled speech.” The court also found that the school’s “pronoun practice was not neutral.”
In its own statement, Jackson Local Schools told NBC4 that it “remains dedicated to navigating complex and changing legal environments in a manner that prioritizes student safety and well-being.”
In August 2022, on the first day of school, two students asked Geraghty to call them by different names than appeared on school information. Geraghty said she knew the names were “part of the student’s social transition” but declined to accommodate them due to her religious beliefs. She also said she “wanted those students out of her classroom.”
For the next week, Geraghty referred to the two students by their real names, even when one asked through e-mail to be called an alternative name. This student then went to a school counselor and wrote, “one of my teachers dead-naming me all the time in class.”

Another teacher then went to the principal “to seek an accommodation so that students would not continue to feel uncomfortable.” Geraghty told the principal that, due to her religious views, she wouldn’t call the students by their preferred names and pronouns and “wouldn’t be comfortable using preferred names or pronouns because she would know what was behind it.”
The principal and another district employee called Geraghty in for a second meeting and told her that “it was going to be a problem” if she didn’t comply with the students’ requests. Geraghty said she was then called in for a third meeting and told that if she wouldn’t comply, “then we need a letter of resignation effective today.” The principal and other participant in this meeting dispute this, saying Geraghty told them: “I’ll guess I’ll resign.”
ADF argued that the school did not offer Geraghty other alternatives, such as moving her to a different classroom or allowing her to address the students by their last names.

Kamala Harris&#8217; campaign allows potential hires to select from a litany of pronouns, including some that refer to people who believe they are &#8220;non-binary&#8221; or are supposedly “without” a gender.
A job <a href="https://jobs.lever.co/BFP/7c8d8bd8-59c2-4261-8381-e97d883d2bc8/apply">application</a> on the campaign website allows those seeking employment to choose from nine sets of gender pronouns total, including seven sets that deviate from the usual “he/him” and “she/her.” They are sometimes referred to as “<a href="https://www.them.us/story/gender-neutral-pronouns-101-they-them-xe-xem">neopronouns.</a>”
Applicants who identify as nonbinary or even claim to be &#8220;agender&#8221; can select neutral pronoun sets like “they/them,” or the shortened version, “ey/em,” or “xe/xem” or “ze/hir.”    Other options include &#8220;hir/hir,&#8221; and a shortened version of the word &#8220;human,&#8221; which is &#8220;hu/hu.&#8221;  And there is &#8220;fae/faer,&#8221; which appears to be used by people who <a href="https://everypronoun.tumblr.com/post/634779894881173504/about-faefaer-pronouns-coming-from-someone">consider themselves to be fairies</a> or practice Wicca. Others have said that the use of the pronouns may constitute <a href="https://www.tumblr.com/gendercensus/643657043304153088/on-faefaer-pronouns-and-cultural-appropriation">cultural appropriation</a>.

An “optional diversity survey” asks applicants for their preferred pronouns, race, ethnicity, gender identity, and whether they &#8220;identify as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community.”
The Kamala Harris campaign’s apparent focus on DEI continues from the Biden-Harris administration&#8217;s emphasis on its implementation in the federal government.
One guide from a federal agency on “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/exclusive-federal-guide-on-inclusive-language-tells-bureaucrats-to-ditch-gendered-terms-like-son-daughter">inclusive language</a>” obtained by The Daily Wire instructs bureaucrats to ditch gendered language like “son” and “daughter” while also using “they/them” as the default pronouns for their colleagues in order to avoid so-called “misgendering.”

The administration has even worked to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/how-the-biden-admin-enables-government-employees-to-change-genders">encourage gender transition attempts</a> for federal employees, telling those who refer to their colleagues by biologically accurate pronouns that they could be engaging in discrimination and contributing to an &#8220;unlawful hostile work environment.&#8221;
Gender pronouns are being pushed at every level of government. The New York City Department of Social Services considers their use a vital step &#8220;in becoming a TGNC (Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming) ally.&#8221;
&#8220;If your gender pronoun is something that never matters to you or that you rarely think about, then you may have pronoun privilege,&#8221; <a href="https://www.nyc.gov/assets/hra/downloads/pdf/services/lgbtqi/Gender%20Pronouns%20final%20draft%2010.23.17.pdf">according</a> to the department.

Democrats in the Virginia state Senate derailed a hearing on Monday after the state’s lieutenant governor absentmindedly responded “yes sir” to an inquiry from deep-voiced Sen. Danica Roem, a man who believes he is a woman.
“Madam president, how many votes would it take to pass this bill with the emergency clause?” Roem asked Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears, a Republican, about a mundane bill that was being voted on.
“That would be four-fifths,” replied Sears, who as lieutenant governor presides over the Senate.
“And what would be the exact number for that madam president?” Roem added.
“Yes, sir, that would be 32,” Sears said as she looked through papers. “Those in favor of that motion shall record their votes aye,” she said, calling the vote.
Roem stormed out and missed the vote. A shout could be heard as he was leaving, though it wasn’t clear who made the sound or what it said.
After the vote, Sears recognized Sen. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/virginia-dems-could-lose-control-of-state-senate-because-one-of-its-members-may-have-lied-about-her-residence" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ghazala Hashmi</a>, whose turn it was to describe the next bill. But Hashmi would not speak. Several Democrat senators began leaving the room. Sen. Scott Surovell then said, “I think I’d ask that we take a recess for five minutes.”

Seven minutes later, the body reconvened, and Sears said, “The chair again recognizes Sen. Hashmi, the senator from Chesterfield.” Hashmi again refused to speak, and Sears put the Senate back in recess.
Three minutes later, the hearing resumed, and Sears appeared irritated but measured.
“I said something that upset Sen. Roem. Let it be known I am not here to upset anyone. I am here to do the job that the people of Virginia have called me to do and that is to treat everyone with respect and dignity. I myself have at times not been afforded that same respect and dignity, but in this body and as long as I am president of the Senate and by the grace of God, I will be treated with respect and dignity and I will treat everyone else with respect and dignity.”
She said she frequently calls people by the wrong names, noting that she had just mistakenly put “the House” into recess instead of the Senate. “I apologize. And I would hope that everyone would understand there is no intent to offend.”

The Democratic Party of Virginia refused to accept Sears&#8217; apology, writing on X, &#8220;We will not forget this smear.&#8221;
Earlier this month, Hashmi’s education committee <a href="https://lis.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/legp604.exe?241+vot+S04V0110+SB0037" target="_blank" rel="noopener">killed</a> Sage’s Law, a bill passed by the House of Delegates last session that would prevent schools from hiding a child’s gender transition from their parents. It is named after Sage, a girl who was trafficked from rural Virginia to Baltimore and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/mother-of-sex-trafficked-teen-files-lawsuit-after-girl-was-held-in-boys-group-home-to-affirm-her-trans-identity">raped by a registered sex offender</a> after going through trouble at school that her parents knew nothing about, and after school staff allegedly repeatedly encouraged her to transition. After the FBI rescued her from the sex trafficker, Baltimore placed her into a group home full of Baltimore&#8217;s roughest male youths. After her mother rescued her, she later said she was not actually transgender.

The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/90-year-old-volunteer-for-ms-society-told-to-step-down-because-she-did-not-understand-pronouns">National Multiple Sclerosis Society</a> finally apologized for firing a 90-year-old volunteer who failed to use preferred pronouns while celebrating the diversity, equity, and inclusion movement.
In a rather lengthy <a href="https://www.nationalmssociety.org/About-the-Society/News/Statement-from-National-Multiple-Sclerosis-Society">statement</a> from the non-profit organization, the MS society wrote that it had apologized &#8220;to our longtime, dedicated volunteer Fran Itkoff&#8221; after the group asked the volunteer to &#8220;step down from her role as a group leader because of statements made that we viewed as not aligning with our recently implemented diversity, equity and inclusion policy.&#8221;
&#8220;We realize now that we made a mistake, and we should have had more conversations with Fran before making this decision,&#8221; the statement read.
&#8220;While we acted at the time with the best intentions, we did not have clear protocols in place,&#8221; the statement added. &#8220;We should have spent more time with Fran to help her understand why, as an organization, we are dedicated to building a diverse and inclusive movement where everyone has equitable access to the care, connections, and support they need to live their best lives. &#8220;

Speaking to LOTT creator Chaya Raichik, Itkoff said, &#8220;I was confused. I didn&#8217;t know what it was and what it meant,&#8221; when asked about including her pronouns in her email signature.
&#8220;I had seen it on a couple of letters that had come in after the person&#8217;s name. But I didn&#8217;t know what that meant,&#8221; she added. &#8220;So when I finally talked to [a colleague], I asked what does it mean… And she said that it meant they were all-inclusive, which didn&#8217;t make sense to me. Because it sounds like you are labeling for females, not males, if you are just putting in she/her.&#8221;
The long-time volunteer said she was asked to step down a few days later. &#8220;I was completely shocked,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I couldn&#8217;t believe that … I had to read it a couple of times to see if I&#8217;m getting what she said.&#8221;
Itkoff told Libs of TikTok she started volunteering, in part, because her husband had MS, a degenerative disease impacting the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves, and continued to volunteer long after his death 20 years ago.

The non-profit National Multiple Sclerosis Society defended its decision to oust a 90-year-old volunteer because she “did not understand pronouns.&#8221;
The organization released a statement on Thursday addressing the controversy and reaffirmed its decision to part ways with the elderly volunteer, who had worked with them for 60 years prior to being let go.
“Recently, a volunteer, Fran Itkoff, was asked to step away from her role because of statements that were viewed as not aligning with our policy of inclusion,” the <a href="https://www.nationalmssociety.org/About-the-Society/News/A-Statement-from-the-National-MS-Society">statement</a> said. “Fran has been a valued member of our volunteer team for more than 60 years.”
“We believe that our staff acted with the best of intentions and did their best to navigate a challenging issue. As an organization, we are in a continued conversation about assuring that our diversity, equity and inclusion policies evolve in service of our mission, and will reach out to Fran in service of this goal,” the statement added.
While comments for the post with a link to the statement were turned off, X users expressed their frustration on previous posts from the organization.

The 90-year-old California resident said she was asked to step down a few days later. “I was completely shocked,” she said of her dismissal. “I couldn’t believe that … I had to read it a couple of times to see if I’m getting what she said.”

MS Society Defends Decision To Oust 90-Year-Old Volunteer For Not Using Pronouns

An elderly volunteer for the National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society was told to step down from her position because she “did not understand pronouns,” according to an interview with Chaya Raichik of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/libs-of-tik-tok">Libs of TikTok</a>.
Fran Itkoff, 90, said she had been volunteering for the organization in her home state of California for about six decades before she was told to stop. She said she received multiple awards over that time and was generally commended for her hard work and dedication, but her failure to “abide by [the MS Society’s] <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/diversity-equity-and-inclusion-dei">Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion</a> guidelines” resulted in her dismissal.

Itkoff said she initially didn’t understand what she was being asked to do. “I was confused. I didn&#8217;t know what it was and what it meant,” the former volunteer told Raichik of being asked to incorporate <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/leftism">pronouns</a> into her email signature. 
A fellow colleague had requested she use her pronouns, but Itkoff was confused.
“I had seen it on a couple of letters that had come in after the person&#8217;s name. But I didn&#8217;t know what that meant,” the CA resident continued. “So when I finally talked to her, I asked what does it mean&#8230; And she said that it meant they were all-inclusive, which didn&#8217;t make sense to me. Because it sounds like you are labeling for females, not males, if you are just putting in she/her.”
Itkoff was reportedly instructed to &#8220;step down&#8221; several days later via email. The reason for her dismissal was noted as a failure to comply with stated DEI initiatives.
&#8220;Unfortunately, based on the situation, we have made the difficult decision to have you step down from your volunteer position, effective immediately,&#8221; the email reads. 
“I was completely shocked,” she said of being dismissed after 60 years of service. “I couldn&#8217;t believe that &#8230; I had to read it a couple of times to see if I&#8217;m getting what she said.”

Itkoff volunteered in part because her husband had MS, a degenerative disease impacting the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. He ran the Long Beach Lakewood MS support group before his death 20 years ago, she told Libs of TikTok.
Itkoff&#8217;s daughter, Elle Hamilton, was also disappointed to see her mother banished from her longtime volunteer position. “To me, it&#8217;s ironic, because they are saying they are inclusive, but they are excluding a 90-year-old disabled woman who has volunteered for 60 years,” she said. 
“And literally the sole purpose was to help the MS patients and find a cure. &#8230; That&#8217;s literally all she does,” Hamilton continued.
