King Charles III has authorized a letter to senior British officials making clear that Prince Harry and Meghan will remain non-working royals despite their return to the United Kingdom last month, <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c20lpevv7jlo">according</a> to the BBC.
The letter, issued by Lord Chamberlai, Lord Benyon on behalf of the King, was distributed to Harry&#8217;s team, government officials, military leaders and Lord Lieutenants — royal representatives who may be involved in official visits. Its purpose, according to Palace sources, is to ensure that any public activity by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex going forward is understood to be undertaken in a private capacity rather than on behalf of the monarchy.

The letter also reportedly reiterates that the arrangement struck when the couple stepped back from royal duties in January 2020 — sometimes called the Sandringham Agreement — remains fully in effect, barring any &#8220;half-in, half-out&#8221; role that would let them draw on royal status while pursuing outside commercial ventures.
Harry and Meghan relocated to Britain in late August with their children, Archie and Lilibet, after six years living in Montecito, California. The family is reportedly settling into a privately owned home outside London while keeping their California residence and a property in Portugal. Jamaica formally petitioned King Charles III on Monday, asking him to refer three legal questions on Britain&#8217;s historical role in the transatlantic slave trade to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council — the first time a Commonwealth nation has attempted this route in pursuit of reparations.
The <a href="https://jis.gov.jm/jamaica-to-petition-king-charles-iii-for-privy-council-ruling-on-slavery-reparations/">petition</a>, led by Jamaican Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport Olivia Grange, invokes the Judicial Committee Act of 1833, which permits the monarch to send matters of constitutional weight to the Privy Council for an advisory opinion. It asks whether the forced transport and enslavement of Africans in Jamaica violated English common law, whether it amounted to a breach of international law, and whether Britain bears a legal obligation to provide a remedy.
The filing was timed to the anniversary of the 1781 departure of the Zong, a Liverpool-registered slave ship whose crew threw more than 130 captives overboard — an atrocity that later galvanized Britain&#8217;s abolitionist movement.

President Donald Trump celebrated Prince Harry and Meghan Markle&#8217;s return to the United Kingdom on Wednesday, saying he was &#8220;happy&#8221; to see the couple leave the United States.
“I’m happy about it,” the president <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/conormurray/2026/09/02/trump-happy-harry-and-meghan-left-united-states-i-was-not-a-fan/">told</a> reporters in the Oval Office. “I was not a fan.” 
Trump accused Harry and Markle of treating the royal family with &#8220;great disrespect&#8221; and singled out Markle&#8217;s conduct toward the late Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III.
“I didn’t like the way she acted,&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;I thought she was terribly disrespectful to the Queen, to King Charles.” 
&#8220;If I were the royal family, I would not have taken them back,&#8221; he added.
Trump has been a critic of Markle&#8217;s for years. When it was suspected she supported his opponent Joe Biden for president in 2020, he <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-torches-meghan-markle-i-wish-a-lot-of-luck-to-harry-because-hes-gonna-need-it">said</a>, “I’m not a fan of hers, and I would say this, and she probably has heard that, but I wish a lot of luck to Harry, because he’s going to need it.”

Relations deteriorated after Harry and Meghan’s bombshell 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, in which they accused an unnamed royal family member of raising concerns about how dark their first child Archie’s skin might be. The couple’s Netflix documentary and Harry’s memoir, “Spare,” which also included criticism of the royal family, further deepened the rift. Harry has also remained estranged from his older brother, Prince William, according to multiple reports.
After losing his appeal over government-funded security in Britain in 2025, Harry told the BBC he hoped to reconcile with his family.
“I would love reconciliation with my family. There’s no point in continuing to fight anymore. Life is precious,” Prince Harry said, insisting that the security argument has “always been the sticking point.” He also referenced his father’s cancer battle, saying he didn’t know how much time the king had left.

Remember when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle thought they could alight upon California and trick us into treating them like America’s most sympathetic Brit-ish royals? Well, it seems the stateside jig is up as the hucksters move on to plan B. 
After dragging the British monarchy through the mud and fleeing the U.K. for Montecito in 2020, Harry and Meghan plan this fall to schlep it back across the pond. Yep, to the place where Meghan <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/07/world/meghan-markle-suicidal-thoughts.html">once claimed</a> the press treated her with such brutality, she “didn’t want to be alive anymore.” To the father Harry said was cold and distant, and the brother he alleged called Meghan “<a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-64179164">rude</a>” and “abrasive.” Meghan even summoned crocodile tears to tell Oprah the royals were <a href="https://time.com/5944613/meghan-markle-oprah-racism/">racists</a>. 
Why would they voluntarily jump back into all of that? Well, maybe everyone stopped believing their lies.
The couple plan to enroll their children, 7-year-old Archie and 5-year-old Lilibet at a U.K. school this September. Since they already regifted their official Frogmore Cottage back to the late queen, they’ll remain royal-adjacent in an off-campus residence.
We’re supposed to believe this is a moving story of a broken family on the mend, the return of Britain’s <a href="https://yougov.com/en-gb/articles/55269-royal-family-favourability-trackers-july-2026">former favorite royal</a> (Harry) into the Commonwealth’s open arms. It’s so epic, it could almost be a movie. What a coincidence that <a href="https://yougov.com/en-gb/articles/55269-royal-family-favourability-trackers-july-2026">Netflix</a> cameras may be on hand to capture it.
This all came about after Harry and Meghan popped in to see the king in July for a shockingly headline-free visit. King Charles, who is still receiving<a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c80n48kg0vjo"> treatment for cancer</a>, seems to have the most empathy toward Harry’s plans to return for good. Somewhere in Windsor Castle, the queen is rolling over in her grave.
So is this the part where Harry and Meghan finally admit that clawing for clout effectively destroyed every close relationship in their lives? Meghan may have been fine going no-contact with her dad, siblings, former castmates, ex-husband, and friends to rise to the top. But Harry — who once lamented “<a href="https://pagesix.com/2022/08/29/prince-harry-lost-dad-prince-charles-meghan-markle-says/">I lost my dad in this process</a>” after leaving the royal family — was never that cold at heart. As his birthright slipped through his fingers, so did his identity.
Meghan and Harry have spent the better part of their decade-long relationship cashing in on their supposed hardships. They’ve complained ad nauseam about the British tabloid press, filing lawsuit upon lawsuit in a litigious quest to protect their eternally encroached-upon space. It was such a blatant ruse “South Park” even dragged the pair’s “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2N8_5LDkZwY">worldwide privacy tour</a>.” While Meghan <a href="https://abcnews.com/GMA/Culture/duchess-meghan-embroiled-tabloid-lawsuit/story?id=72075500">won a copyright claim in 2021</a> against a tabloid that published a private letter to her dad, subsequent courts have been less sympathetic. Harry just lost an “<a href="https://apnews.com/article/prince-harry-lawsuit-daily-mail-elton-81f7450c6419cbbd5a2b573217cf5ab1">invasion of privacy case</a>” against Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper and will be forced, along with other plaintiffs including Elton John, to reimburse legal fees to the tune of $13 million, at least. 
It’s a marker of a changing era. One that’s shifting toward offering obvious grifters a lot less clout. Maybe most of us have exhausted ourselves with our own toxic empathy.
We were just beginning to enter the chaos of 2020 when the Sussexes first launched their American invasion that March. As the pandemic’s chokehold opened the door for the riots of Black Lives Matter, Meghan — a biracial quasi princess — made her move. 
On Oprah’s prime time special, Meghan revealed “concerns and conversations about how dark [Archie’s] skin might be when he was born.” The world gasped at the alleged gall of the perpetrators who, according to Omid Scobie’s book “Endgame,” were rumored to be King Charles and Princess Catherine.  
But by 2026, Oprah would awkwardly <a href="https://www.instagram.com/reels/DbEQGlNqoDL/">distance herself</a> from the marquee exclusive, like it was a random interview with nobody important that she did way back when. Does Oprah not believe Harry and Meghan’s claims anymore? Does anyone? Did we ever? 
After years of virtue signaling, the couple seems to have done the most damage to themselves. Never mind their own children who appear as obscured pint-sized accessories on their parents’ social media.
Archie and Lilibet have reportedly never met their cousins: William and Catherine’s kids George, Charlotte, and Louis. Reports blame the distance between California and Kensington Palace, but the real gap seems to be interpersonal. Harry’s practically estranged from his brother who will one day be the King of England. Since Meghan took a hacksaw to her own immediate family, so to speak, the couple has no one left but themselves. Not even the celebrities they once called friends view them as being essential to elite society.
Where did it really go wrong? Well, Meghan’s name is literally written all over it. From the portmanteau “<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megxit">Megxit</a>” that followed the couple as they left the royal family to the colloquialism “<a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/SaintMeghanMarkle/comments/1vpp6vx/the_midas_touch_but_for_failure/">Markled</a>” — or “the Midas touch but for failure” — it seems Harry may have been the limp noodle she needed to siphon that royal cash. 
The plan worked until the hose got kinked and the <a href="https://pagesix.com/2026/05/13/royal-family/breadwinner-meghan-markle-may-take-drastic-action-to-pay-her-prince-harrys-huge-bills/">$6 million</a> they needed to fund their lives stopped rushing in. Meghan didn’t transform into the star she always dreamed of, and the couple was seen at events together less often. Royal biographer “Lady C” Colin Campbell even told “<a href="https://youtu.be/PbVQbkvDE3Q?t=3642">The Nerve With Maureen Callahan</a>,” “People with official links at governmental level in the United States contact me to tell me that Harry is in love with another woman (of his age), who is also in love with him.”
Beyond the stress on the marriage, there’s the issue of proximity to the throne. With the possibility of King Charles abdicating to Prince William at any moment, royal commentators speculate that William may strip Harry and Meghan of <a href="https://www.express.co.uk/showbiz/tv-radio/2240347/prince-william-bombshell-plan-blow-sussexes">their royal titles</a> — and cut them off from the royal family for good.
If they’re no longer duke and duchess, who are they? Harry was born into the monarchy, but Meghan — who went from rags to riches (or “Deal or No Deal” to a <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2018/05/18/the-royal-wedding-may-cost-43-million-and-94-percent-of-that-is-for-security.html">$43 million</a> royal wedding) — blew her chance to become just as beloved as Kate, or even Diana. She’s clearly “Single White Female”-ing both. 
Even if they’re headed back into the family fold, it’s unclear whether the British public will welcome Harry and Meghan with open arms. One <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/video/world/europe/100000011103379/londoners-react-harry-meghan-uk-return.html">Londoner</a> said, “I’m not especially happy about it because they trashed the whole country numerous times, betrayed their family, betrayed his king, his father.”
Another noted, “If [Harry] wants to try and build his royal side back up again, I think he would be welcome. He would be welcome.”
Someone else wondered if it’ll just be the same routine in a different country, posting to <a href="https://x.com/QLoTII/status/2090265990877557123?s=20">X</a>: “Harry &amp; Meghan spent years branding the royals ‘toxic,’ fled to Hollywood for ‘freedom,’ then cashed in on every sob story imaginable … only to now crawl back like the firm’s the only place left that still answers their calls. Sussex Squad and Black people who bought the whole ‘racist royals’ act just got played harder than a Netflix special. The Sussexes’ independence lasted about as long as their relevance. Welcome home — your ‘victim’ narrative just got a royal reboot.”
Over on this side of the pond, the vibe is a little more rock and roll. As <a href="https://x.com/MeghanMcCain/status/2090191179874767065?s=20">Meghan McCain</a> posted on X: “One thing about Americans is we can see through bullsh*t and we don’t like entitled grifters. They could never hack it here and truly no one gives a sh*t about d-list royals. Good luck to our friends in the UK, they’re your problem now.”
Still others hope they finally find what they’ve been looking for: home. As <a href="https://youtu.be/Rha8OGXZpso?t=67">one Brit</a> shared, “It’s good to welcome people with open arms, no matter where they are and what their journey is like. You don’t know what they had to go through.” 
Yet, we know what we’ve gone through, and when it comes to these two, it’s “no deal.” Bon voyage, Harry and Meghan. Don’t let the door hit you on your way out.

The year: 2021. The setting: the sprawling grounds of Montecito. In the camera frame: megacelebrity TV host Oprah Winfrey seated across from royal refugees, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. In an exclusive interview with Oprah Winfrey, the couple revealed just why they fled England and royal life for refuge in California. The transatlantic move would famously be dubbed “Megxit.”
“Lack of support, lack of security, potential racism through &#8216;<a href="https://news.sky.com/story/meghan-wrote-to-king-charles-expressing-concern-about-unconscious-bias-in-the-royal-family-reports-12863044">unconscious bias</a>,&#8217; being silenced.” These were all <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXpFFFCvcH4">reasons the couple gave</a> for why staying in the U.K. was untenable.
“My biggest concern was history repeating itself,” Harry said, referring to Meghan allegedly being tormented by the media, drawing the parallel to his mother, Princess Diana, prior to her death. Markle asserted that their voices were “silenced.” And in the most famous confession of the entire sit-down, Markle accused unnamed royal members of the family of having “concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born,” referring to their unborn son. And just a little over a year ago, Harry, after losing a court battle for taxpayer-funded security, <a href="https://news.sky.com/story/prince-harry-says-loss-of-security-protection-makes-it-impossible-to-bring-meghan-and-children-to-uk-13360358">vowed that it was impossible</a> to bring his family back to his home country. He stated he couldn’t &#8220;see a world in which I would be bringing my wife and children back to the U.K. at this point.”
Well…here we are a little over a year later. The couple has no promises of government security, no invitations (that we know of) to return as working royals, and no public resolution of the racial-bias allegations…so why are they going back, given their longstanding concerns?
Some critics and commentators say the “prodigal prince” could be returning for two major reasons: money and power. <a href="https://robshuter.substack.com/p/exclusive-harrys-60-million-legal">Celebrity reporter Rob Shuter</a> claims the Sussexes are under significant financial strain from their bills, especially because of Harry’s failed lawsuits against the U.K. press. Shuter estimates the following: “$5 million a year for private security, the upkeep of their Montecito estate, staff salaries, travel, and the costs of maintaining their global brand.” As <a href="https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/celebrity/articles/harry-reportedly-facing-financial-downward-185701598.html?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAA6x0SHDHRvNXitONi8vVaIDdZFvgCymzChNxjbxmN4m8hmu0p1HAefN43Io4m-Rp4NSTiykACenUXd1SJaTuguuHUA9Oag_raCsCkm6N9g8atn46tX3Bc8cJwfb0PBbcWu4tWEQn4tHNIU1wk5IfHMdjqUfERsB5KH2bZm403W6">one report points out,</a> &#8220;People think Harry and Meghan have unlimited money — they don&#8217;t,&#8221; another insider said. &#8220;They&#8217;ve earned a fortune, but they&#8217;ve spent one too. A financial hit of this size changes the conversation overnight.&#8221; <a href="https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/celebrity/articles/prince-harry-seeking-king-charles-120104132.html?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAA6x0SHDHRvNXitONi8vVaIDdZFvgCymzChNxjbxmN4m8hmu0p1HAefN43Io4m-Rp4NSTiykACenUXd1SJaTuguuHUA9Oag_raCsCkm6N9g8atn46tX3Bc8cJwfb0PBbcWu4tWEQn4tHNIU1wk5IfHMdjqUfERsB5KH2bZm403W6">Some speculate</a> that proximity to the bank of King Charles couldn’t hurt given the reported financial strain the couple is under.
However accurate that may or may not be, there is still the reality that the King is actively battling cancer. Prince Harry has been open about <a href="https://deadline.com/2025/05/prince-harry-seeks-reconciliation-king-charles-cancer-1236384125/">his desire to reconcile </a>with his father and that he doesn’t &#8220;know how much longer my father has.&#8221; Living in the same country would create greater opportunities for true reconciliation and give the King a chance to know his grandchildren.
But…there are also whispers swirling around that the timing of this homecoming is very deliberate. One unnamed source tells <a href="http://radaronline.com/">RadarOnline.com</a> in an exclusive that Harry is “hoping to re-establish his royal position before his estranged brother, Prince William, takes the crown along with his wife, Princess Kate [Middleton]. &#8220;Harry may never get a better window of opportunity.&#8221; It’s a claim I’ve heard bandied about more than once. It’s no secret that William and Harry are not on speaking terms. The brothers have been unable to reconcile after Harry’s negative references to William’s wife, Kate Middleton, in his <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/04/03/entertainment/prince-harry-in-painful-place-after-writing-about-kate-middleton-in-spare-expert/">bestselling memoir, Spare</a>. William certainly can’t control whether Harry and his family move back to England, but, as King, he would ultimately have far greater influence over Harry’s relationship with the institution.
Given the breaking news of their pending move this month, are we looking at a future where Harry and Meghan are royal-adjacent? Accessing Buckingham Palace while also hawking Meghan’s As Ever products? Holding court with the King while also taking Netflix calls? If that’s the case, then this might be the best arrangement the Sussexes could’ve ever envisioned.
Now, six years later, Harry and Meghan appear to be testing whether they can have the best of both worlds: the freedom of private citizens, the commercial opportunities of their Sussex brand, and the proximity and prestige that come with being members of the Royal Family. We don&#8217;t exactly know the motivation. But after years of insisting that Britain was unsafe and intolerable, their decision to return inevitably raises questions about what has really changed.
And sure, they’re entitled to change their minds about Britain. But the rest of us are entitled to ask why.

The king and Queen Camilla met with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Archie, and Princess Lilibet at the Highgrove House country estate. 
Relations deteriorated after Harry and Meghan’s bombshell 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, in which they accused an unnamed royal family member of raising concerns about how dark their first child Archie’s skin might be. The couple’s Netflix documentary and Harry’s memoir, Spare, which also included criticism of the royal family, further deepened the rift. Harry has also remained estranged from his older brother, Prince William, according to multiple reports.
After losing his appeal over government-funded security in Britain in 2025, Harry told the BBC he hoped to reconcile with his family.
“I would love reconciliation with my family. There’s no point continuing to fight anymore; life is precious,” Prince Harry said, insisting that the security argument has “always been the sticking point.” He also referenced his father’s cancer battle, saying he didn’t know how much time the king had left. 
Harry has visited the U.K. without his wife on multiple occasions in recent years, including for his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in 2022 and his father’s coronation in 2023. 
King Charles is aware of the couple’s plans and “welcomes the opportunity,” according to <a href="https://people.com/prince-harry-meghan-markle-moving-back-uk-with-prince-archie-princess-lilibet-exclusive-12061632">PEOPLE</a>. Across the pond, however, not everyone is exactly thrilled with the royal reunion. 
“I actually think a lot of people are going to be incredibly annoyed that they have been really disparaging about Britain,” GB News commentator Patrick Christys <a href="https://x.com/GBNEWS/status/2090197223241891845?s=20">said</a>. “They&#8217;ve caused huge potential racism allegations against both the serving monarch and also Catherine. They absolutely seem to have no shred of empathy whatsoever for Catherine&#8217;s cancer diagnosis. They&#8217;ve been absolutely vile, I think, about this country and about the royal family.” 
Christys also questioned the motive and timing of the relocation. 
“And yet here they are now. Their kids are getting to proper school age, and they want to move to a chocolate box quintessentially English village in the countryside, untouched by any other issues this country faces, so they can give their kids a good British education,” he added.

Initially, it was all very dapper: the tea, the crumpets, and the fanfare. They were all good and fine.
But then the King of England, King Charles III, decided to use his royal prerogative and lecture us on how to run our country, on how America ought to lead the world.
Shut the hell up.
It’s true that there are many lessons to be learned from Great Britain over the past century.
But the biggest one is this: Don’t do what they did.
King Charles is currently representing a civilization that no longer exists. He&#8217;s an empty crown, sitting atop a civilization that gave up the ghost a long time ago. There&#8217;s only one takeaway Americans should have from the King&#8217;s visit: If Great Britain has zigged, we ought to zag.
Britain is a cautionary tale. If we follow their path, we collapse the same way they have.

Charles’ visit to the United States began with Revolutionary-Era soldiers welcoming the king in the Rose Garden.
Somewhat ironic; the last king who experienced Revolutionary-era soldiers would not have been welcomed in quite this way.
As a student of American history and as a devotee of British philosophers ranging from John Locke to Edmund Burke, I love the fact that the United States is rooted in Anglican and English history. I love it. It&#8217;s great.
Charles called the bond between the United States and the UK priceless and eternal. He joked about the idea that if it were not for Great Britain, we would be speaking French, a response to President Trump saying that if it were not for us, the British would be speaking German (I assume Charles was referring to the French and Indian War, which doesn&#8217;t make a whole hell of a lot of sense, because if the French had won the French and Indian War, it is very likely that many of the settlers would have returned to England).
But then the king decided it was time to lecture the United States. And this is the part to which I object.
It began with him talking about Christianity. He said, “For many here and for myself, the Christian faith is a firm anchor and daily inspiration that guides us not only personally.”
So far, so good, although I&#8217;m not sure why Democrats were clapping.
“Together as members of our community, having devoted a large part of my life to interfaith relationships and greater understanding,” he continued. “It is that faith in the triumph of light over darkness, which I have found confirmed countless times through it. I am inspired by the profound respect that develops as people of different faiths grow in their understanding of each other.”
There we go. This was all going to lead up to a bit of a lecture about America&#8217;s foreign policy.
As a person who is not Christian, I have tremendous admiration for Christianity and what it has done in the world. I encourage people to go to church all the time, but it turns out that if you want a robust Christianity, that Christianity cannot be based on vague principles. It has to be based on faith.
So when you hear the Brits lecturing the United States, a much more religious country, about Christianity and interfaith relations, let&#8217;s be real: Great Britain has taken religion and trodden it through the mud.
The statistics don&#8217;t lie. According to the UK&#8217;s 2022 census, 51% of people in the UK identify as having no religion, according to a 2024 British Social Attitudes Survey. A paltry 9% of the population attends a religious service once a week or more.
And as far as Anglican identity, it doesn&#8217;t exist anymore. 2.6% of people aged 16 to 34 identify with the Church of England.
Meanwhile, the tremendous increase in radical Islam in the kingdom has been overwhelming. 15% of London, at a minimum, is Muslim. A huge percentage of those people are radicalized. According to one survey conducted in 2016 by the polling exchange, 4% of British Muslims say that 9/11 was executed by al Qaeda, 7% say the Jews, and 31% say the American government.
Great Britain imported millions of people who believe this. Millions of people. This is where their interfaith nonsense has gotten them.
So, as far as being lectured on Christianity and interfaith attitudes by the Brits, the answer is no.
You know where interfaith is going in Britain. Interfaith is about tolerance for radical Islam, which is why today, the day after King Charles visited the United States, there was an attack in Golders Green, which is a very heavily Jewish part of London, in which a radical Muslim took out a kitchen knife and started stabbing people who were wearing Jewish garb.
According to UK government data, there were 15,859 total reported incidents of knife crime in London in 2025 alone. We know that Great Britain&#8217;s interfaith tolerance allowed for gigantic grooming gangs to basically run the place for years on end, out of fear that there might be a backlash to open immigration.
King Charles also took the opportunity to lecture us on climate change. We should mention that the UK has destroyed its own economy on the basis of this nonsense.
Listening to the Brits lecture us on energy production is ridiculous. Roughly 78% of the UK&#8217;s energy still comes from hydrocarbons. That would be things like oil and natural gas. The UK is constantly on the economic edge because of its extraordinary regulations and low domestic gas storage capacity. According to an article in The American Spectator, there&#8217;s a 78% tax rate on North Sea gas production and a nuclear program that&#8217;s not going to deliver energy for a decade.
The energy programs in the UK have driven them into the dirt, economically speaking.
All of this culminated in King Charles lecturing the United States on how to beat swords into plowshares rather than plowshares into swords.
I understand: King Charles represents the monarchy. Keir Starmer&#8217;s government is an appeasement-oriented, left-wing pacifist government.
In order to understand my ire here, I think you have to understand that having the British Crown come to the United States and tell us all about the old-style civilization that Britain basically surrendered in favor of welfare statism is highly irritating. 
In 1933, there was a resolution at Oxford University at their debate club, the so-called King and Country Resolution, in which the students voted, “that this House will under no circumstances fight for its king and country.” This was reflective of British sentiments; an attempt in the aftermath of the course of World War I to recede from global leadership.
You know what ended up happening? It was a self-fulfilling prophecy.
I was recently reading Winston Churchill&#8217;s “<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Gathering-Storm-Second-World-War/dp/039541055X/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0">The Gathering Storm</a>,” which is, of course, a classic. It is the first volume of his Second World War series. In the beginning pages of the book, Churchill explains his purpose in writing the book, saying he was writing to demonstrate “how the malice of the wicked was reinforced by the weakness of the virtuous, how the structure and habits of democratic states, unless they are welded into larger organisms, lacked those elements of persistence and conviction which can alone give security to a humble masses. How, even in matters of self-preservation, no policy is pursued for even 10 or 15 years at a time. We shall see how the counsels of prudence and restraint may become the prime agents of mortal danger. How the middle course, adopted from desires for safety and quiet life, may be found to lead direct to the bullseye of disaster.” 

He continued, “We shall see how absolute is the need of a broad path of international action, pursued by many states in common across the years, irrespective of the ebb and flow of national politics.”
Great Britain is currently telling the United States that we ought not do what we are doing in Iran. They are doing absolutely nothing to help us in the Strait of Hormuz. They are perfectly willing to allow China to maximize its global influence. Only in the case of Ukraine has Britain taken a leading role in any sort of way, and even there, it&#8217;s basically to beg us for money and armaments.
After World War II, Great Britain decided it would give up global leadership in favor of irrelevance and socialism.
No country has done as much damage to itself as Great Britain through pacifism, socialism, redistributionism, and open borders.
The Brits can&#8217;t even leave their kids money, because when you give up global leadership, free markets, private property, and skew in favor of socialist idiocy and global weakness, you become irrelevant.
You don&#8217;t get to come here and lecture us about any of this.

When Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles and Queen Camilla would visit the United States to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence, I knew I had to call Mark Helprin.
The bestselling author’s fifth novel, 2005’s “Freddy and Fredericka,” is a thinly veiled sendup of Charles and Princess Diana — who, in this case, must travel to America and recapture “the colonies” in order to be blessed by an immortal, magical falcon who selects the true kings of England.
If you’ve never read one of Helprin’s novels, that summary is a pretty good glimpse into the experience: discursive and funny with a healthy shake of magical realism.
“Freddy and Fredericka” is a darkly comic romp across the United States that finds our heroes falling in love with the country they were sent to recapture, urging Americans to “let everything in the nation flow through you” and to return to “your original principles … immaterial and bright, ever enduring.”
It’s been more than a decade since I first read “Freddy and Fredericka,” and I’ve returned again and again to this book, essentially “Democracy In America” in novel form. So I was excited to ask Helprin how much Tocqueville was on his mind while he wrote the novel.
“He wasn’t,” Helprin said, for one simple reason: He had never read Tocqueville.
He was, however, in the process of reading “Democracy in America” in French, along with &#8220;The Wealth of Nations,&#8221; another classic he’s never gotten to. Shakespeare and Dante are in heavy rotation, however, as is fiction until the Lost Generation. Nothing after Fitzgerald and Hemingway holds much interest for Helprin, which, he stresses, has everything to do with his personal taste and nothing to do with snobbery.
There’s nothing about Helprin’s oeuvre or demeanor that would suggest he is anything other than well-read. But if yielding at Dos Passos for some reason stirs up doubts about Helprin’s literacy, the thousands of volumes that line the shelves of Helprin&#8217;s Charlottesville home should put them to rest. I once heard that Helprin has every paper he’s ever written, going back to his undergraduate career at Harvard, if not high school.
I didn’t ask him about this because I didn’t want it to not be true. After our conversation, I’m certain it is.
Helprin is everything you want him to be. Smartly dressed in a light check blazer, occasionally self-effacing and always captivating, he’s like a character from one of his novels — the latest of which, <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Elegy-Blue-Novel-Mark-Helprin/dp/1419786083">“Elegy In Blue,”</a> hits shelves this week. All told, he’s written nine novels, three collections of short stories, and three children&#8217;s books illustrated by “Jumanji” author Chris Van Allsburg.
In addition, Helprin maintains a steady stream of political commentary, weighing in on everything from copyright law to foreign policy. Helprin’s fans, myself included, say he’s one of the greatest living American novelists. Helprin almost certainly wouldn’t say that about himself, which is likely why, despite a half-century in the public eye, he manages to fly somewhat under the radar.
Helprin’s relative anonymity is especially ironic considering his downright cinematic backstory. His mother was an actress in the Golden Age of Hollywood who left the Silver Screen to join the Group Theatre, a famous Method acting collective. His father, an American commando who worked for Winston Churchill during the Second World War, later became the head of London Films. It was there, in an office in Mayfair, that the first seeds for “Freddy and Fredericka” were planted by the king and queen themselves.
“Part of his job was, when the Queen and Prince Philip wanted to see a film, they would come in one Rolls Royce, no security or anything like that,” Helprin recalls. “He would greet them on the sidewalk and then escort them upstairs and into the screening room, where there was a buffet laid out with caviar and shrimp and everything, champagne, whatever.”
“And they would sit down, and then he would introduce the film, tell them about how it was made, what the subject was, whatever screen the film,” he continues. “And then afterwards, he would take questions from them, if they had any, and then escort them down to the street and see them off and say, thank you very much for coming.”
“They never thanked him, ever,” Helprin notes.
Helprin never forgot that. Not as he did his graduate work, which kept him at Harvard before taking him to Oxford; not during his time in the Israel Defense Forces, a tour of duty he embarked on after he was asked — and declined — to move to Cairo and serve as the Middle East editor for the New York Times.
Somewhere toward the end of his itinerant youth, he began a career as a writer. His first novel, “Refiner’s Fire,” was published in 1977. He achieved mainstream success with 1983’s “Winter’s Tale” and 1991’s “A Soldier Of The Great War.”

It was during a three-month book tour for the latter novel that the seeds planted by his family’s royal connection finally began to sprout. It was the &#8217;90s, and Charles and Di were all over the news. Seeing a man and a woman washing dishes at a restaurant kitchen one night, one of his daughters asked if the scullions were the duke and duchess.
Helprin saw an opportunity for “misapprehension,” which he calls “the funniest part of all humor.”
“If you think about the royals in Britain, they have so much opportunity for that because they live in a completely different world,” Helprin says. “But there&#8217;s even greater opportunity if they&#8217;re here amongst the colonials incognito.”
“Freddy and Fredericka” was a success in the United States. It was not published in Britain, where audiences were less receptive to Helprin’s take on the monarchy. Helprin has no regrets.
“I mocked the royals because they&#8217;re mockable,” he says. “They&#8217;re insanely mockable. They&#8217;re freaks, right? And they live in a freakish world.”
But Helprin appreciates that by separating their head of state and the head of government, the British monarchy “allows a really stable, decent government.” That attitude didn’t fly with “the loony Left” across the pond.
At least one person in Great Britain received a copy, however.
“Just by chance, I was invited to dinner that Prince Charles was supposed to attend in Washington, D.C.,” Helprin recalls. “And I said, &#8216;Well, you know what I better do? I better send Freddy and Fredericka to the palace,’ because, you know, to give them advance warning you don&#8217;t want to sandbag people.”
“So I sent it to the palace,” he explains, “and then without any word whatsoever, I was just disinvited to the dinner.”
Had he met Charles, Helprin says, he would have “approached him as an American.”
“We don&#8217;t believe that people are born with privilege, that, in other words, that privilege is legitimate, that they&#8217;re entitled to it, and we see them eye to eye,” Helprin adds. “That&#8217;s what America is about, and that there&#8217;s a very, very powerful force behind that, our history, our power, our ethos and the founding, which was, I think, divinely inspired.”
“If I&#8217;m sitting across from the King of England,” Helprin says, “I don&#8217;t feel lesser in any way.”
It’s a line that could have been spoken by most of Helprin’s protagonists. The typical Helprin hero is a kind of Aristotelian great-souled man with a Brooklyn accent. Most of Helprin’s novels take place in and around New York City, where Helprin was born and lived the first five years of his life, and a city that still captivates him and feels like home, despite the oppressive scale of “way too tall” buildings and the scourge of bike messengers zipping around with food, &#8220;because everybody has to have instant gratification.”
Of all Helprin’s New York novels, “Winter’s Tale” stands alone. Set simultaneously at the turns of the 20th and 21st centuries, the novel has at least 100 characters, a lengthy subplot about rival 19th-century newspaper barons, a magical realist upstate New York town with its own magic language, and a flying white horse.
That barely scratches the surface of what “Winter’s Tale” is about, and I’m not sure I could accurately describe it if I tried. The book has stuck with me, almost haunted me, for years. Whenever I’ve read another of Helprin’s books, I hope to find within it the key to understanding it. I never have.
Helprin, it seems, is in the same boat.
“I can&#8217;t explain it, but it possessed me day and night,” he says. “I would spend days in the New York Historical Society … and I&#8217;d walk the streets, looking at things and getting very, very obsessed and emotional about it.”
“So in a sense, I&#8217;m not the one to explain it, because it seizes me as much as other people who report that it did the same to them,” Helprin adds. “I felt as if I was just a medium of something that was speaking through me.”
To the extent that the book is about one thing, Helprin says, it’s about justice. Divine justice.
“People say God works in mysterious ways. Well, they&#8217;re not necessarily mysterious,” he says — they just come “from the past.”
“Who said that everything has to be made right in the timeline that we can perceive? Maybe it&#8217;s different, maybe from the divine perspective, the timeline is infinitely long, and the balances are affected and affect justice over a long period of time, so that after an injustice, maybe 20 years later, there&#8217;s some sort of a compromise,” Helprin adds.
“If you look at the whole of humanity and the whole of the universe as being one construct, if you think that from the divine perspective, that&#8217;s what it is, because you see from very far away, and it&#8217;s as one thing actually, without time.”

We mortals, of course, cannot see as God sees. But this is what Helprin aims to do in his novels. More than that, it’s how he sees the world, day in and day out.
“If you ask my wife, she would tell you, it&#8217;s very difficult to be married to me,” he says. “Very, very difficult.”
To stay grounded while thinking these lofty thoughts, Helprin works. He has been an agricultural worker, a surveyor, a dishwasher, and a stevedore.
“I spend so much time working, doing hard, physical, exhausting labor, that while I&#8217;m doing that often I think of things and think of what I&#8217;m going to do about the book, and when I get the chance to actually write the book, I’m so grateful for it because it&#8217;s different from, you know, spending hours on a tractor in the hot sun or getting rid of trees that fall,” he says. “So you come in from the heat and the dust and the dirt and the blood — if you work on a farm, you&#8217;re gonna have a lot of blood, and you&#8217;ll be lucky if you keep your fingers when you come in — then you have a refuge. And it&#8217;s a great privilege.”
“It&#8217;s almost like — to return to where we started — almost like being a royal,” he adds.
Helprin is on the cusp of turning 80, and while he says nothing to suggest that he wants to give up the punishing labor that’s driven so much of his life (and allowed him never to take a publisher’s advance), mortality is at least a little on his mind.
“Elegy In Blue,” he notes, “is probably not going to be my last book, as I&#8217;m working on another one. But, who knows, I may not be able to finish the other one. I might die before I do.”
Like his novels, Helprin feels neither outdated nor contemporary. He is a man out of time, a bridge between this century and the last who would likely feel equally at home in both. He speaks as he writes, and he lives like the characters he creates, a true American original.
But, unsurprisingly, the anti-monarchist with Tory sensibilities does miss the world he grew up in.
“I have to say, I do miss it, I really do,” he says. “When you&#8217;re going to be 80, then you&#8217;ll probably miss it, too. You know, that&#8217;s the way it is. And it&#8217;s okay.”

As the United States prepares to mark its 250th year of independence, King Charles III addressed a joint session of Congress on Tuesday, speaking to the successor of the very body that declared the nation’s founding, and drawing a standing ovation as he honored the historic moment.
&#8220;I would like to take this opportunity to express my particular gratitude for the great honor of addressing this joint meeting of Congress and on behalf of the Queen and myself, to thank the American people for welcoming us to the United States to mark this semi-quincentennial year of the Declaration of Independence,&#8221; Charles said.
Charles is only the second British monarch to address a joint session of Congress, following Queen Elizabeth II in 1991. While he visited the United States 19 times as Prince of Wales, this marks his first trip as king since ascending the throne in 2022, and the first royal to visit the United States since 2007.

&#8220;The need for our two nations to stand shoulder-to-shoulder has never been more vital,&#8221; Charles said, pointing to global conflicts including the war between Russia and Ukraine and tensions in the Middle East.
The visit comes at a moment of strain in the U.S.-U.K. relationship, shaped by President Donald Trump&#8217;s criticism of NATO, Britain&#8217;s reluctance to fully back U.S. actions in Iran, and disagreements with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Still, Charles emphasized that the alliance remains essential.
&#8220;The commitment and expertise of the United States Armed Forces and its allies lie at the heart of NATO,&#8221; Charles said. &#8220;Pledged to each other&#8217;s defense, protecting our citizens and interests, keeping North Americans and Europeans safe from our common adversaries.&#8221;
Charles also reflected on the deep historical ties between the two nations, invoking both George Washington and King George III.
&#8220;King George, as you know, never set foot in America,&#8221; he said, adding with a laugh, &#8220;please rest assured, ladies and gentlemen, I am not here as part of some cunning rearguard action.&#8221;
He praised the Founding Fathers as &#8220;bold and imaginative rebels with a cause,&#8221; noting that they forged a free nation while carrying forward traditions rooted in the British Enlightenment, English common law, and Magna Carta.
&#8220;By balancing contending forces and drawing strength in diversity, they united 13 disparate colonies to forge a nation on the revolutionary idea of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,&#8221; he said.
Charles also struck a more personal tone, describing the Christian faith as a &#8220;firm anchor and daily inspiration,&#8221; and expressing hope that nations can work together &#8220;to foster peace&#8221; and deepen understanding across faiths.
Earlier Tuesday, during a White House event, President Trump reflected on the transformation of the U.S.-U.K. relationship from wartime adversaries to close allies.
&#8220;There, the direct descendant of King George III will speak to the direct successor of the very body that gathered in Independence Hall on July 4th, 1776,” Trump said. “If John Adams and George Washington or the King’s fifth great-grandfather could see that sight, they might be absolutely shocked, but probably only for a moment. Surely, they would be delighted that the wounds of war healed into the most cherished friendship.&#8221;
The state visit has blended ceremony and diplomacy. On Monday, President Trump and first lady Melania Trump welcomed Charles and Queen Camilla to the White House for tea and a tour of a newly installed beehive, followed by a garden party at the British ambassador&#8217;s residence.
On Tuesday, the royal couple returned for a formal arrival ceremony with military honors, remarks from Trump, a guest book signing, gift exchange, and a bilateral Oval Office meeting. Meanwhile, the first lady and Queen Camilla hosted an educational event for students.
Charles is scheduled to return to the White House on Tuesday night for a formal state dinner expected to host around 100 guests.
On Wednesday, the king and queen are expected to visit the National September 11 Memorial &amp; Museum in New York City, where they will meet with victims&#8217; families and first responders connected to the aftermath of the deadliest terrorist attack on American soil.
The visit will conclude on Thursday, when Trump and the first lady bid farewell to the royal couple before they travel to Virginia for additional events and then depart for Bermuda.

Maybe he’s a king after all? According to a newly published <a href="https://www.dailymail.com/news/article-15770263/Mail-traced-Trumps-family-tree-Kings-cousin.html">report</a> from The Daily Mail, President Trump shares a common ancestor with the British monarch King Charles III.
The news broke the day after Charles and his wife arrived in the United States for an official state visit. Their research shows that the connection starts with the 3rd Earl of Lennox, a great-grandson of King James II of Scotland. This ultimately makes Trump and Charles III 15th cousins. 
The official White House X account posted about the findings, including a chart tracing back the ancestry research. They also included a screenshot of the president’s Truth Social post about it, which said, “Wow, that’s nice. I always wanted to live in Buckingham Palace!!! I’ll talk to the King and Queen about this in a few minutes!!!”

Trump has been remarkably brave when confronted with someone trying to murder him not once, not twice, but three times — first in Butler, Pennsylvania when a bullet grazed his ear after he miraculously turned his head at the precise right moment, and again on Saturday night when a gunman crashed the White House Correspondents’ Dinner armed with multiple weapons and the intent to kill the president.
More than three decades ago in 1994, King Charles (then Prince Charles) was targeted by a crazed activist himself while giving a speech in Australia. David Kang, 23, fired off two blanks and tripped onto the stage where Charles was speaking before being tackled by the future monarch’s security detail.
The whole time, the Prince of Wales can be seen looking on with a mildly sour look on his face, without cowering in fear or ducking for cover.
King Charles and Queen Camilla are visiting the United States as the country approaches the 250th anniversary of its independence from Britain as a signal of the strong relationship between the two countries. The royal couple will visit Washington DC, New York, and Virginia between April 27 and 30.
Buckingham Palace issued a statement on Sunday evening following the assassination attempt, saying the event did not change their plans.
&#8220;The King and Queen are most grateful to all those who have worked at pace to ensure this remains the case and are looking forward to the Visit getting underway tomorrow,&#8221; the statement said.

British police arrested former Prince Andrew on Thursday in connection with his ties to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. 
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, who turned 66 on the day of his arrest, was taken into custody by the Thames Valley Police on suspicion of misconduct in public office. The disgraced former prince was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/prince-andrew-will-be-stripped-of-titles-moved-out-of-royal-residence-buckingham-palace">stripped</a> of his royal titles in October 2025 following revelations about his ties to Epstein. 
Police provided limited details about the arrest, citing British law, but said they were conducting searches at homes in Berkshire and Norfolk. According to the BBC, law enforcement said &#8220;it was assessing a complaint over the alleged sharing of confidential material&#8221; with Epstein. This confidential material <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/02/19/world-news/ex-prince-andrew-mountbatten-arrested-for-misconduct-in-public-office-over-his-links-to-jeffrey-epstein/">reportedly</a> included trade documents. One <a href="https://www.justice.gov/epstein/files/DataSet%209/EFTA00751685.pdf">email</a> from the Epstein files released by the Justice Department showed Mountbatten-Windsor appearing to forward Epstein official trade reports for Hong Kong, Singapore, and Vietnam. 
“We understand the significant public interest in this case, and we will provide updates at the appropriate time,” Assistant Chief Constable Oliver Wright said. “Following a thorough assessment, we have now opened an investigation into this allegation of misconduct in public office.”
If convicted, Mountbatten-Windsor could face life in prison.

Epstein accuser Virginia Giuffre, who died by apparent suicide last year, alleged that Mountbatten-Windsor sexually abused her when she was 17. He previously <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-60667111">settled</a> a civil lawsuit brought by Giuffre in 2022 without admitting wrongdoing.
“He knows what he’s done and he can attest to that,” Giuffre said in 2019. “He knows exactly what he’s done and I hope he comes clean about it.”
Giuffre&#8217;s family welcomed the arrest.
&#8220;Today, our broken hearts have been lifted at the news that no one is above the law, not even royalty,&#8221; they said. &#8220;He was never a prince.&#8221;
&#8220;For survivors everywhere, Virginia did this for you,” they added. 
In a statement, King Charles III called for a fair investigation into Mountbatten-Windsor. 
&#8220;I have learned with the deepest concern the news about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and suspicion of misconduct in public office. What now follows is the full, fair and proper process by which this issue is investigated in the appropriate manner and by the appropriate authorities,” he said. 
&#8220;In this, as I have said before, they have our full and wholehearted support and co-operation,” the king added. “Let me state clearly: the law must take its course. As this process continues, it would not be right for me to comment further on this matter. Meanwhile, my family and I will continue in our duty and service to you all.”
The Justice Department&#8217;s release of the Epstein files has rocked the United Kingdom, increasing pressure on Prime Minister Keir Starmer over reported ties between former U.K. ambassador to the United States Lord Peter Mandelson and Epstein.
