WASHINGTON—Polymarket’s “Situation Room” felt tailor-made for this town.
A pop-up bar where political operatives, journalists, and insiders could gather beneath glowing screens tracking real-time odds on elections, global events, and breaking news. It&#8217;s likely that whichever of the prediction market&#8217;s employees came up with the idea was inspired by a February 28 post on X, which outlined precisely this idea.

As of this writing, that post had 1.6 million views. Polymarket&#8217;s March 18 post announcing the bar opening has 37 million.

The concept was simple: bring the logic of prediction markets into a physical space. Surround patrons with screens, data, and live odds. Let them literally “monitor the situation,” maybe watch some March Madness — and, of course, use Polymarket to bet on everything they saw.
It was a perfect pitch for a city of power brokers and data nerds. And so, on Friday night, Hill staffers, media types, lobbyists, and the chronically online gathered in the rain outside of Proper 21-K, a stalwart watering hole that would, for the night, become The Situation Room. What could possibly go wrong?
As it turns out: everything.
When doors finally opened after several delays, guests entered a dimly lit space wrapped in blackout curtains, lit primarily by a glowing LED sphere in the center of the room dubbed “The Globe.” It looped imagery of Earth, Polymarket branding, and even a digital Magic 8 Ball message: “The future belongs to those who can see it.”
Ironically, no one could see much of anything. Thanks to &#8220;electrical issues,&#8221; the monitors remained off all night. One frustrated attendee loudly joked, &#8220;I can&#8217;t monitor like this!&#8221;
Fortunately, Polymarket had the good sense to hire a live band, which swung out tunes like &#8220;Just the Two of Us&#8221; by Bill Withers and Grover Washington Jr. and &#8220;Chameleon&#8221; by Herbie Hancock. But even with a good band, the much-hyped “Situation Room” was left without its core feature: information. The bassist told The Daily Wire he got the gig on Wednesday and was curious to see what the bar would be like. He never got the chance.
&#8220;This was weird,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I saw the TVs off and I wondered how much I had to drink before this!”
With nothing better to do, conversations drifted toward the rise of prediction markets, the ethics of betting on real-world events, and whether platforms like Polymarket represent the future of news consumption or simply a new form of gambling.
While prediction markets have gained traction as tools for forecasting everything from elections to economic trends, Polymarket has still struggled to gain a foothold in the United States. Its main competitor, Kalshi, is accessible to American users and fully regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, which under President Donald Trump has <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-admin-assembles-financial-dream-team-in-high-stakes-america-first-move" target="_blank" rel="noopener">warmed</a> to predictive markets.
Unable to build a solid user base, Polymarket has resorted to stunts like The Situation Room, or <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/strapped-new-yorkers-swarm-chaotic-mamdani-inspired-free-grocery-store-pop-up-were-in-pain" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Polymarket</a>, a free grocery store pop-up in New York City.
If Polymarket&#8217;s goal was simply to garner attention, the night was a success. Instead of bar patrons monitoring the situation, one attendee joked, the entire internet was monitoring The Situation Room. The virality of the gaffe was perhaps more than the organizers could have hoped for on a smooth night.
And a smooth night it wasn&#8217;t. Security began ushering still-confused guests out around 9:00 p.m., well before the bar&#8217;s planned 11:00 p.m. last call.
“They’re getting tired of this, I guess,&#8221; one security guard told The Daily Wire while dispersing the crowd.
Asked whether the screens would be working the next day, he shrugged.
“Man, I hope so,” he said. “Otherwise it’ll be a long weekend.”

A historian with a perfect record of predicting the results of American presidential elections for 40 years stated that despite the polls, President Biden still has a lead over former President Trump — but cautioned he won’t make a prediction until August.
American University professor Allan Lichtman, who has infallibly predicted every election since 1984, created along with Russian mathematical geophysicist Vladimir Keilis-Borok a prediction model of 13 keys which they published in a <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC349231" target="_blank" rel="noopener">1981 paper</a>, later expanding the number of keys to 13. Lichtman then published his book “The Keys to the White House,” later reissued as “<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Predicting-Next-President-White-House/dp/153814865X" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Predicting the Next President: The Keys To The White House</a>.”
“A lot of things would have to go wrong [for the election keys] to go against Biden,” Lichtman told <a href="https://www.marketwatch.com/story/conventional-wisdom-said-trump-couldnt-win-in-2016-this-historians-keys-said-he-would-what-are-those-keys-telling-us-today-4562126e" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Market Watch</a>. “But they could. I am very careful in not making a prediction.” He said that Biden currently leads Trump in five of the keys, while Trump leads in three, with the rest undecided.
The 13 keys include:

<li>Midterm gains: After the midterm elections, the incumbent party holds more seats in House than after the previous midterm elections.</li>
<li>No primary contest: There is no serious contest for the incumbent party nomination.</li>
<li>Incumbent seeking re-election: The incumbent party candidate is the sitting president.</li>
<li>No third party: There is no significant third party or independent campaign.</li>
<li>Strong short-term economy: The economy is not in recession during the election campaign.</li>
<li>Strong long-term economy: Real per capita economic growth during the term equals or exceeds mean growth during the previous two terms.</li>
<li>Major policy change: The incumbent administration effects major changes in national policy.</li>
<li>No social unrest: There is no sustained social unrest during the term.</li>
<li>No scandal: The incumbent administration is untainted by major scandal.</li>
<li>No foreign/military failure: The incumbent administration suffers no major failure in foreign or military affairs.</li>
<li>Major foreign/military success: The incumbent administration achieves a major success in foreign or military affairs.</li>
<li>Charismatic incumbent: The incumbent party candidate is charismatic or a national hero.</li>
<li>Uncharismatic challenger: The challenging party candidate is not charismatic or a national hero.</li>
</ol>
Lichtman said Biden led Trump in key# 2, as Biden has not faced a serious challenger in his own party; key #3, as he is the incumbent; key #6, claiming the long-term economic trend is headed upward; key # 7, that Biden has made major changes, and #13, explaining that a challenger should have broadly bipartisan support or be a national hero in the way former President Dwight Eisenhower was after World war II.
Trump leads in keys 1, 11, and 12, Lichtman opined, pointing out (#1) that the Democrats do not hold more seats in House than after the previous midterm elections; (#11) Biden has not had a major foreign policy win, and (#12) Biden is neither charismatic nor a national hero.
Key #9 would depend on the American people feeling that the Biden administration is tainted by a major scandal. Lichtman argued that the Trump campaign has not been able to convince the general public, not just Republicans, of a major scandal involving the Biden administration.

“Here is the secret to being a successful forecaster,” Lichtman said. “The most important thing is keeping your own personal views out of it. I&#8217;ve called about as many Republican wins and Democratic wins. In 2016 I was virtually alone in predicting a win for Donald Trump.”
