Looking back on it, one of the most important moments from the last election had nothing to do with Donald Trump or Kamala Harris. In fact it had nothing to do with this country at all. It was the unilateral decision by the president of El Salvador to transform his country, virtually overnight, from a gang-controlled failed state into one of the safest places on the planet. This wasn&#8217;t an empty campaign promise or a slogan. He actually did it, despite the wailing from various civil liberties groups.
In 2015, El Salvador recorded more than 6,000 homicides.
Throughout all of last year, they recorded just over 100 homicides.
By all accounts, in just a few years, El Salvador managed to solve a crime problem that, according to all the experts, could not be solved.
To everyone living in America&#8217;s rotted-out urban centers, overrun border towns and poor communities in Appalachia, the transformation of El Salvador was meaningful. It wasn&#8217;t your typical foreign news story with no interest to everyday people. It wasn&#8217;t the equivalent of wall-to-wall coverage about the latest developments taking place 7,000 miles away in the Middle East.
What Bukele did to save El Salvador, very clearly, sent the message to every American that the same kind of revival is possible in this country. All of the barriers you hear about are fake. None of the roadblocks are real. Places like Seattle, New York and Los Angeles aren&#8217;t actually beyond saving, no matter how dire things look. All it takes is an executive who&#8217;s willing to punish criminals without any remorse whatsoever. Once a country has an executive like that, things can change. And they can change very quickly.
Less than six months into the second Trump administration, we&#8217;re seeing another illustration of this principle. Throughout the campaign, as you might remember, we were told repeatedly that the unrestricted flow of illegal aliens into this country was a very difficult problem to solve. We were told that, in order to even begin to address the issue, we&#8217;d need to pass a law that would send billions of dollars to federal government agencies and various NGOs. That was the claim every Democrat — and several Republicans — were making. As much as I understand that no human being ever wants to hear the words &#8220;Kamala Harris&#8221; ever again, this was also a big part of her platform. During the debate, it was her &#8220;big idea&#8221; for supposedly fixing the border. If you can bear it, here&#8217;s that moment again:

Less than a year later, let&#8217;s check in on this whole line of argument. How is the border doing, now that Donald Trump is the president of the United States? Without a multi-billion-dollar &#8220;border bill,&#8221; how much could his administration possibly have accomplished?
As it turns out — even with every federal judge in the country working in tandem to block his agenda, and even without an expensive border bill passed by Congress — the administration has accomplished quite a bit. They&#8217;ve done what we were told was impossible, many times over. The southern border, which until very recently was a completely unsalvageable mess, is now more secure than it&#8217;s been at any time in generations.
Here&#8217;s CBS News, of all places, <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/migrant-crossings-u-s-mexico-border-historically-low-levels/">reporting</a> on the progress:
<blockquote>The number of migrants crossing the U.S. southern border unlawfully continued to be at a historically low level in April, three full months into President Trump&#8217;s aggressive efforts to curtail illegal immigration, according to internal federal data. &#8230; The number of illegal crossings during Mr. Trump&#8217;s first three full months in office represents a seismic change at the U.S.-Mexico border. The apprehensions reported in February, March and April are the lowest tallies recorded by the Border Patrol in its public monthly dataset, which stretches back to fiscal year 2000. The last time Border Patrol averaged fewer than 9,000 monthly apprehensions along the southern border over a year was in the late 1960s, according to historical agency figures.</blockquote>
In other words, according to arrest data stretching back 25 years — which is the extent of the data we have collected — a record-low number of illegal aliens are currently attempting to cross the border. Donald Trump, in his second term, has achieved a more secure border than Bush, Obama, and the first Trump administration did. And he&#8217;s still going. We&#8217;re on pace for the lowest number of illegal aliens being apprehended at the border since the 1960s, at which point the data becomes so imprecise that we have no real way of going further back.

This didn&#8217;t take an act of Congress. It didn&#8217;t take hundreds of billions of dollars. All it took was an executive who authorized federal officers to enforce immigration law, both at the border and throughout the country. Once that happened, the inflow of illegal aliens stopped as quickly as it began.. Here&#8217;s a chart that CBS included in their story, which highlights just how drastic the decline in illegal migration has been:

You&#8217;ll notice there&#8217;s a massive, unprecedented spike in illegal migration right when Joe Biden takes over. And then, just as quickly, the Trump administration ends it. Look at that drop. It&#8217;s almost unbelievable. It demonstrates that, no, this was not a complicated or difficult issue to solve. And that makes the refusal to solve this problem, by every president until now, seem all the more nefarious.
To be clear, the only reason we&#8217;re seeing these reductions in apprehensions at the border is because the illegal aliens have gotten the message that the Trump administration is serious about immigration enforcement. Therefore they&#8217;ve stopped trying to enter this country. They understand that, when they&#8217;re caught, they won&#8217;t be allowed into the United States anymore, which is what the Biden administration did in virtually every case.
The New York Post just <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/06/17/us-news/border-agents-didnt-release-a-single-illegal-migrant-into-the-us-last-month-border-patrol/">obtained data</a> demonstrating just how common &#8220;catch and release&#8221; used to be, under the previous administration. These are some of the more extraordinary figures you&#8217;ll ever hear.
<blockquote>Border Patrol agents didn’t release a single migrant into the US last month — a staggering drop after the Biden administration allowed 62,000 illegal crossers in the country in May 2024. &#8230; Agents caught 8,725 migrants crossing illegally at the southern border last month. That’s a 93% decrease from May 2024, when 117,905 were nabbed. &#8230; One of the most monumental policy changes made by Trump was the reversal of President Joe Biden’s catch-and-release scheme, which resulted in millions of illegal border jumpers being allowed into the US.</blockquote>
To restate, in May of 2024, the Biden administration deliberately allowed 62,000 illegal aliens into the country. That&#8217;s 62,000 illegal aliens in just one month, meaning they were on pace to allow more illegal aliens into this country in one year than the entire population of San Francisco. By contrast, this past May, the Trump administration did not deliberately allow a single detained illegal immigrant into this country. They took the number from 62,000 all the way to zero, which of course is what the number should&#8217;ve been all along. There is no reason whatsoever to allow a criminal alien to enter the country, because once you do that, you&#8217;ll never see them again — at least, not until they commit some heinous act of violence against an American citizen. Of course, the Biden administration knew that. That&#8217;s why they did it. And now that policy is over, so we&#8217;re seeing immediate results.
This is obviously a major victory, on par with what Bukele did in El Salvador. But it&#8217;s not a total victory, even though the numbers make it look like one. That&#8217;s because, as we&#8217;ve discussed previously, illegal immigration isn&#8217;t the only immigration problem we have. Like other countries, including Canada, we&#8217;ve given legal status to a large number of foreign nationals who despise this country. Which means even legal immigration is a problem that needs to be fixed. In fact, legal immigration needs to be shut down entirely, at least for now.
More than pretty much anyone else, Ilhan Omar is a walking justification for this policy. As if to prove my point, Omar recently announced that America — the country that rescued her from life of certain poverty, despair and ultimately death in Somalia — is actually one of the worst countries on the planet. This is a woman who, because of the generosity of the United States and its immigration policy, is now a sitting member of Congress, living a life that&#8217;s unimaginable to many Americans, to say nothing of virtually everyone living in Somalia. But here she is, announcing that actually, America is just about as bad as where she came from:

She&#8217;s willing to say, as part of her sob story, that she lived under a brutal dictatorship in Somalia. But she conveniently leaves out the fact that her father was a colonel in that dictator&#8217;s army. This is a regime that committed genocide and various human rights abuses as part of a communist-Islamist agenda. But Ilhan Omar forgot to mention any of that. And it&#8217;s an interesting omission, to say the least. It&#8217;s the kind of thing that might make you suspect that Ilhan Omar is an inherently dishonest person, and her whole family — and many other &#8220;refugees&#8221; like her — should never have been granted legal status in the first place.
And that&#8217;s not the only deception that&#8217;s evident in that interview. Notice what she&#8217;s doing there. She says that &#8220;this should be a wakeup call&#8221; for all Americans to feel a variety of patriotic sentiments about &#8220;the country we were born in&#8221; and the &#8220;founding fathers.&#8221; She&#8217;s trying to use American values against Americans. But she doesn&#8217;t actually share any of these values. Pretty much every time this woman opens her mouth, she&#8217;s attacking America, praising Somalia, and vowing to work on behalf of Somali interests from within the United States.
We&#8217;ve played the clips many times before. There hasn&#8217;t been a single moment in her political career where she&#8217;s expressed an ounce of pride in this country. And she certainly has never praised &#8220;the founding fathers,&#8221; who she regards as white supremacists whose statues should be torn down, and whose memories should be erased from history forever. But now, suddenly, she&#8217;s pretending to invoke the &#8220;founding fathers&#8221; to appeal to her constituents.
And again, she&#8217;s been given legal status to come to this country and say all of this. She&#8217;s now a naturalized citizen. And through it all, she keeps talking about Somalia. In fact she seems to want to go back there. This is a rough translation that&#8217;s <a href="https://x.com/EndWokeness/status/1753402969406451930">making the rounds</a> from a trip that Omar reportedly took to Somalia back in 2022. We&#8217;ll only play a small bit of the clip because it&#8217;s not in English. Watch:

According to the translation in the subtitles, she says, &#8220;I am a Somali girl… a young child taken from her country that misses her country and wishes to live there.”
You can dispute whether Ilhan Omar obtained her citizenship lawfully, and whether she&#8217;s subject to deportation on those grounds. But it really doesn&#8217;t matter. Very obviously, based on what she&#8217;s saying publicly, it&#8217;s clear that Ilhan Omar should not have been allowed into this country for any reason. She certainly should not have been made a citizen. She doesn&#8217;t offer anything to this country. And she never has. She is a shining example for why legal immigration needs to be drastically curtailed, now that the border is relatively secure.
Washington congresswoman Pramila Jayapal is yet another example. She came to this country from India as a teenager. And by her own admission, at no point did she have any interest in improving America for Americans. Instead, she immediately got to work opening the floodgates for the rest of the third-world to come here. Here&#8217;s what she <a href="https://x.com/PramilaJayapal/status/1934354981399798075">just wrote</a> on social media.
<blockquote>I came to this country when I was 16. I worked in immigration justice for 20 years before setting foot in Congress. I’ve spent my entire life defending immigrants – and I’m not backing down.</blockquote>
In other words, by allowing Pramila Jayapal to become a citizen, we didn&#8217;t get someone who was committed to a life of hard work that would improve the lives of American citizens in any way. She didn&#8217;t have any interest in contributing to her local community, or performing services for American citizens. Instead, she began working immediately on behalf of foreign nationals.
This is a self-perpetuating problem. It&#8217;s a death spiral. The more immigrants we allow into this country — even &#8220;legal&#8221; ones — the more immigrants we get. By and large, these people are not vetted. They openly despise this country from the second they arrive. And after they&#8217;ve used our resources for their benefit, their hatred doesn&#8217;t change. Instead, they work even harder to allow more of their countrymen into the United States, so that they, too, can reap the rewards. This system simply cannot last forever. It&#8217;s not simply immoral. It&#8217;s unsustainable. It only works as long as there are rewards to dish out. Once that happens — and this moment is rapidly approaching — the social safety net collapses for everyone, along with our economy.
The only way to prevent that outcome is for the Trump administration to follow-up on its success with illegal aliens by sharply reducing the number of lawful migrants into this country.
Democrats will claim it&#8217;s heartless to turn our back on &#8220;refugees&#8221; and so on. But all you really need to do is listen to most of these &#8220;refugees&#8221; and lawful immigrants speak for a few minutes, and you&#8217;ll see what&#8217;s necessary. They don&#8217;t typically sound like South Africans, who are grateful to be here. Instead they often sound like Ilhan Omar and Pramila Jayapal. They tell us how awful the United States is, and how desperately they want to return to Somalia. And at this point, as decisively as Donald Trump closed the southern border, we have no choice but to give these loathsome, anti-American foreign operatives exactly what they&#8217;re asking for.

Senate Minority Whip John Thune (R-SD), who was recently elected as the next Republican Senate leader, slammed Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) this week for admitting that she would get rid of the filibuster if Democrats controlled the White House and Congress but not if Republicans had control.
“Am I championing getting rid of the filibuster now when the Senate has the trifecta? No,” <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/11/12/us-news/progressive-rep-pramila-jayapal-reneges-on-support-for-axing-filibuster-after-democrat-loses-on-election-day/">said</a> Jayapal, the chairwoman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, during a press conference on Monday.
“But had we had the trifecta, I would have been, because we have to show that government can deliver,” Jayapal added.
Thune noted in a speech on the Senate floor that Jayapal said the quiet part out loud: &#8220;In other words, one rule for Democrats, and one rule for everybody else. Democrats should be able to do whatever they want; Republicans, not so much.&#8221;
He said that the filibuster must be preserved because it &#8220;encourages compromise and helps ensure that all Americans, not just those whose party is in the majority, have a voice in legislation.&#8221;
&#8220;If there’s one thing we’ve learned over the last few years, it’s that Democrats firmly believe that the only legitimate government is a Democrat government,&#8221; he said.
Thune highlighted how Democrats have a campaign to undermine the legitimacy of the Supreme Court because they do not like the rulings from the conservative justices.
&#8220;This court sometimes issues decisions Democrats don’t like, and therefore, in their view, the court is somehow illegitimate,&#8221; he said, later adding: &#8220;Democrats’ apparent belief that it’s the Democrat Party and the Democrat Party only that should be calling the shots in Washington betrays some of that same disdain for voters.&#8221;
He said that the filibuster would be safe under Republican governance.

A House Democrat says she would have supported eliminating the filibuster if Democrats had control of the White House, Senate, and House, but she doesn’t support it now that Republicans have won all three levers of power.
Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), chair of the Progressive Caucus, was speaking at <a href="https://www.c-span.org/video/?539917-1/congressional-progressive-caucus-chair-holds-news-conference-members" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a press conference</a> on Monday about the 2024 election results when she was asked about her previous support for ending the filibuster.
“Am I championing getting rid of the filibuster now when the Senate has the trifecta? No,” she said, referring to Republicans taking back control of the White House and Senate and likely maintaining control of the House.
“But had we had the trifecta, I would have been, because we have to show that government can deliver,” Jayapal added.
“If we had had control of the trifecta and gotten rid of the filibuster to pass minimum wage, to pass paid sick leave, to pass many of these things that are passing – abortion access – that are passing on ballot measures that are so popular …  then I think we would have built some trust with the American people,” Jayapal also said.
She also claimed that Republicans “already got rid of the filibuster, for taxes.” Republicans used a special process known as reconciliation, which can only be used for budget issues like taxes, spending, and the debt limit. It is not the same as eliminating the filibuster.

As recently as September, Jayapal called the filibuster the “Jim Crow filibuster,” the New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/11/12/us-news/progressive-rep-pramila-jayapal-reneges-on-support-for-axing-filibuster-after-democrat-loses-on-election-day/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.

Jayapal, being a member of the House, has no say or control over the filibuster, even if Democrats had retained the Senate. So far, however, she is the only Democrat to come out and say what is known to be true: They only support ending the filibuster when they have the majority.
Last week, The Daily Wire asked every current, incoming, and outgoing Senate Democrat if they supported ending the filibuster now that Donald Trump has won the election and Republicans will control the Senate.

Rep. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/pramila-jayapal" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Pramila Jayapal</a> (D-WA) faced backlash online on Thursday after she chuckled during a television interview when discussing multiple news chyrons that networks displayed during a Biden immigration speech, one of which from Fox News referred to an illegal alien in New York City who violently raped a young girl late last week.
&#8220;There&#8217;s a lot of fear mongering,&#8221; Jayapal claimed during an MSNBC segment with Joy Reid.
Reid read chyrons that the three major cable news networks had on their screens as Biden held a press conference announcing that he was taking executive action to protect hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens in the U.S.

Christian Geovanny Inga-Landi, 25, was arraigned on multiple charges this week after a group of Good Samaritans beat him up and held him until authorities were able to arrest him early on Tuesday. He had been on the run for several days after the attack on a 13-year-old girl in Kissena Park in Queens.
The New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/06/19/us-news/ecuadorian-migrant-who-allegedly-raped-13-year-old-nyc-girl-said-he-recorded-the-attack-in-sickening-confession-da/?utm_campaign=nypost&amp;utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=social" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that the Ecuadorian illegal alien was charged with predatory sexual assault, first-degree rape, two counts of second-degree kidnapping, two counts of first-degree robbery, second-degree rape, first-degree sexual abuse, obstructing governmental administration, and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
Prosecutors said in court that Inga-Landi, who illegally entered the U.S. in 2021, stated during a videotaped confession: “I was nervous at first, then got comfortable and recorded it.” Assistant District Attorney Kasey Esposito reportedly read the transcript of the videotaped statement.

Biden referenced “illegals” after Rep. Majorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-botches-laken-rileys-name-during-sotu-shouting-match-with-mtg" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pressured him</a> into referencing Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student who was allegedly murdered by an illegal immigrant from Venezuela, according to police. Biden flubbed Riley’s name during his speech, calling her “Lincoln Riley.” 
“Lincoln Riley!” Biden said. “An innocent young woman who was killed by an illegal. That’s right. But how many of the thousands of people being killed by illegals? To her parents, I say, my heart goes out to you having lost children myself. I understand.”
Biden went on to say that amnesty should be granted to millions of illegal immigrants in the country and said he needed Republicans to pass a Democrat-backed bill in order to have the ability to secure the border. Despite his push for leftist policies, many Democrats were not happy with his reference to “illegals.” 
“As a proud immigrant, I&#8217;m extremely disappointed to hear President Biden use the word ‘illegal,’” Rep. Chuy Garcia (D-IL) <a href="https://twitter.com/RepChuyGarcia/status/1765950131159859281" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>.

“Let me be clear: No human being is illegal,” Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) posted on X after the speech. 
Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, <a href="https://apnews.com/live/state-of-the-union-updates-watch#0000018e-1c25-d7d8-a7ee-bebf66ef0000" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> the Associated Press that she was disappointed with Biden’s reference to illegal immigrants. “I wish he hadn’t engaged with Marjorie Taylor Greene and used the word illegal,” she said. 
 “Just like we should not be implementing Republican policy, we should not be repeating Republican rhetoric,” Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) said.

Jean-Pierre responded to a question from co-host Sara Haines be reiterating the White House&#8217;s condemnation of Hamas&#8217; brutality, saying, &#8220;When you use rape as a form of a weapon of war, that&#8217;s reprehensible.&#8221;
Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin pressed the issue, referencing the comments Jayapal made during her Sunday appearance on CNN&#8217;s &#8220;State of the Union.&#8221;

Jayapal said that she absolutely condemned rape and sexual violence, but immediately pivoted to call for &#8220;balance&#8221; — and then cited the civilian death tolls published by the Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Ministry to suggest that Israel was committing war crimes.

Bash began the conversation by pressing Jayapal about Hamas&#8217; use of rape and sexual violence against Israeli women during the brutal terror attack on Israel on October 7th — which left more than 1,200 Israelis dead, many of them women and children. She also noted that there had been a marked silence, particularly from progressive women who claimed to be staunch defenders of women&#8217;s rights, when the victims of such sexualized violence happened to be Israeli.

Jayapal responded by quickly saying that &#8220;of course&#8221; she condemned Hamas and all instances of rape and sexual violence, but pivoted almost immediately to suggest that Israel was not adhering to international law in its response to the October 7th massacre.
&#8220;I’ve seen a lot of Progressive women. Generally speaking, they’re quick to defend women’s rights and to speak out against using rape as a weapon of war, but downright silent on what we saw on October 7th and what might be happening inside Gaza right now to these hostages,&#8221; Bash began. &#8220;Why is that?&#8221;
&#8220;I don’t know that that’s true. I think we always talk about the impact of war on women in particular,&#8221; Jayapal replied, adding that &#8220;of course&#8221; she had condemned Hamas&#8217; use of rape as a weapon of war.
But then she pivoted, saying, &#8220;If they do not comply with international humanitarian law, they are bringing themselves to a place that makes it much more difficult strategically for them to be able to build allies, to keep public opinion with them, and frankly, morally, I think we cannot say that one war crime deserves another. That is not what international humanitarian law says.&#8221;
&#8220;With respect, I was just asking about the women, and you turned it back to Israel. I’m asking you about Hamas,&#8221; Bash pushed back.
&#8220;I already answered your question, Dana. I said it’s horrific, and I think that rape is horrific. Sexual assault is horrific. I think that it happens in war situations. Terrorist organizations like Hamas obviously are using these as tools,&#8221; Jayapal replied, and pivoted again — this time citing the Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Ministry&#8217;s claims regarding the alleged civilian death toll.
&#8220;However, I think we have to be balanced about bringing in the outrages against Palestinians. Fifteen thousand Palestinians have been killed in Israeli air strikes, three-quarters of whom are women and children …&#8221; she said.
&#8220;And it’s horrible,&#8221; Bash agreed, stopping Jayapal cold: &#8220;But you don’t see Israeli soldiers raping Palestinian women.&#8221;
Jayapal attempted to deflect once more, pivoting back to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and saying, &#8220;I don’t want this to be the hierarchies of oppression.&#8221;

Top congressional Democrats are reportedly circulating a letter to President Joe Biden encouraging him to &#8220;designate the Palestinian territories for Temporary Protected Status,&#8221; thus allowing &#8220;foreign nationals&#8221; from those areas to stay in the U.S.
The draft letter, obtained by The Daily Caller, is reportedly backed by Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Reps. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) and Jan Schakowsky (D-IL).
Reporter Henry Rodgers said that the push from congressional Democrats was a call to &#8220;open the flood gates for Palestinians to come into the U.S.&#8221;

The letter comes after the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas launched an unprecedented attack against Israel last month, murdering 1,400 Israelis, wounding 5,300+, and kidnapping more than 240.
&#8220;We urge your Administration to designate the Palestinian territories for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and/or authorize Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) for Palestinians present in the United States,&#8221; the lawmakers wrote. &#8220;As you know, TPS and DED offer temporary relief from removal and work authorization for eligible foreign nationals who are unable to return safely to their home countries or part of a country. In light of ongoing armed conflict, Palestinians already in the United States should not be forced to return to the Palestinian territories, consistent with President Biden&#8217;s stated commitment to protecting Palestinian civilians.&#8221;
The letter demonized Israel by citing numbers from anti-Semitic organizations on how many Palestinians have been displaced from their homes.
The letter did not ask for the same protections for Israeli nationals and made no mention of the hundreds of thousands of Israelis that have been displaced from their homes as a result of terrorist attacks on Israel&#8217;s northern and southern borders.
&#8220;U.S. Department of State statistics indicate that 7,241 nonimmigrant visas were issued to individuals holding Palestinian Authority (PA) travel documents in 2022, the most recent year for which such data is available,&#8221; the letter said. &#8220;While the number of non-immigrant visas issued cannot provide an exact approximation of the number of Palestinians that would be eligible for TPS or DED, it makes clear that the number of beneficiaries would be small, while the benefit could be lifesaving. TPS or DED would enable Palestinians currently present in the U.S., including students, tourists, and workers, to be protected from a dangerous return to their homeland while affording them the ability to remain safely in the U.S. and to work legally to support themselves and their families.&#8221;

Far-left Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) attempted to walk back anti-Israel statements she made Saturday, including “Israel is a racist state,” as she faces condemnation from fellow House Democrats over the comments.
Jayapal made the comment during a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-cF0hwfi3A&amp;t=4221s">panel</a> with fellow hardliners Reps. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) and Chuy Garcia (D-AZ) when anti-Israel demonstrators chanted the phrase at the lawmakers. 
“I want you to know that we have been fighting to make it clear that Israel is a racist state, that the Palestinian people deserve self-determination and autonomy,” Jayapal <a href="https://www.npr.org/2023/07/17/1188096678/jayapal-israel-racist-state-jeffries">said</a>.
The comments drew scattered applause and cheers from people in the audience but soon led to a rebuke from fellow Democrats. 
“Israel is not a racist state,” a <a href="https://democraticleader.house.gov/media/press-releases/joint-house-democratic-leadership-statement-relationship-between-united-states">letter</a> from the House Democratic leadership read without explicitly naming Jayapal. “America and Israel have a uniquely special relationship anchored in our shared democratic values and strategic interests. As House Democratic leaders, we strongly support Israel’s right to exist as a homeland for the Jewish people.”
Jayapal released a <a href="https://jayapal.house.gov/2023/07/16/jayapal-statement-on-israel-comments/#:~:text=At%20a%20conference%2C%20I%20attempted,as%20a%20nation%20is%20racist.">statement</a> Sunday afternoon attempting to walk back her comments, saying, “I attempted to defuse a tense situation during a panel where fellow members of Congress were being protested. Words do matter and so it is important that I clarify my statement. I do not believe the idea of Israel as a nation is racist.”
The congresswoman, who leads the House Progressive Caucus, then took aim at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying his “extreme right-wing government has engaged in discriminatory and outright racist policies.”
A separate <a href="https://www.jpost.com/american-politics/article-750352">letter</a> from a group of Jewish Democrats, which was making the rounds gathering signatures, expresses “deep concern” over Jayapal’s “unacceptable” remarks. “We will never allow anti-Zionist voices that embolden antisemitism to hijack the Democratic Party and country,” the letter says, <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/07/16/politics/pramila-jayapal-israel-netroots-nation/index.html">according</a> to CNN.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) on Monday <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/house/4102090-mccarthy-democrats-need-to-do-something-about-antisemitic-remarks/">called</a> upon House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries to address Jayapal’s and other Democrats’ anti-Israel comments.
“This isn’t the first person in the Democratic conference that has continued to make antisemitic comments,” McCarthy said, referencing Rep. Ilhan Omar’s (D-MN) 2021 <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/democrat-ilhan-omar-the-united-states-and-israel-commit-unthinkable-atrocities-like-the-taliban-hamas">comparison</a> of Israel with the Taliban and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ilhan-omar-on-her-history-of-anti-semitism-i-didnt-understand-i-was-trafficking-in-anti-semitism">other statements</a>. “I think this is a role for the leader, Hakeem, to prove that no, they’re not antisemitic.”
Jayapal’s comments come ahead of Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s address to a joint session of Congress later this week, commemorating the Jewish State’s 75th Anniversary. 
Democratic leadership has been receptive to Herzog’s visit. “I look forward to welcoming him with open arms,” Jeffries said at a news conference last week, calling Herzog “a force for good in Israeli society.”
But far-left Democrats, including Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Jamaal Bowman (D-NY), and Cori Bush (D-MO), have all said they will not attend Herzog’s speech in protest. Jayapal is reportedly undecided on whether she will attend the speech but has said she doesn’t believe she will.

Rep. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/pramila-jayapal" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Pramila Jayapal</a> (D-WA) and Rep. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/alexandria-ocasio-cortez" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez</a> (D-NY) spoke against President <a href="http://dailywire.com/topic/biden-administration" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Joe Biden</a> compromising with <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/house-republicans" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Republicans</a> on spending caps and a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/debt-ceiling" target="_blank" rel="noopener">debt ceiling</a> increase, contending that the move would cause backlash among lawmakers and the broader public.
The debt ceiling, a statute established by <a href="http://dailywire.com/topic/congress" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Congress</a> that prevents the government from spending beyond a predetermined <a href="http://dailywire.com/topic/national-debt" target="_blank" rel="noopener">national debt</a> limit of $31.4 trillion, exceeded the threshold earlier this year. Republicans desire to join an increase in the debt ceiling with spending caps, while Democrats say they prefer separate processes for debt limit negotiations and budget reforms, a debate which occurs even as the government nears <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/yellen-says-nation-could-face-debt-default-in-less-than-three-weeks" target="_blank" rel="noopener">default</a> in as little as two weeks.
Jayapal said in an <a href="https://twitter.com/townhallcom/status/1661028988985262080" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interview</a> with CNN outside of the Capitol Building that an agreement which involves spending caps would undo the policy successes which Biden secured during his administration. “I think there would be a huge backlash from our entire House Democratic caucus, certainly the progressives, but also in the streets,” she told the outlet. “It’s important that we don’t take steps back from the very strong agenda that the president himself shepherded and led over the past two years.”
Users on social media accused Jayapal of calling for protests over the potential spending reforms, although the lawmaker did not appear to explicitly support violent behavior.
Ocasio-Cortez likewise affirmed that a deal which involves spending reforms or increased work requirements for federal welfare would be unacceptable. “It’s going to be a problem,” she added. “We do not legislate through the debt ceiling for this very reason.”
The comments from the lawmakers come one day after Biden met with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) to continue negotiations over the debt limit. McCarthy <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/mccarthy-tells-house-republicans-he-is-nowhere-near-debt-ceiling-deal-with-biden-reports" target="_blank" rel="noopener">asked</a> fellow Republicans in a closed-door meeting on Tuesday to “hang with me on the debt limit” since he and the commander-in-chief are “nowhere near a deal yet” with respect to spending.
“I told the president three things: no clean debt limit, no raising taxes, spend less money,” McCarthy said in the meeting, according to multiple reports. The lawmaker showed his colleagues a video with a timeline of various Democrats refusing to negotiate on the debt limit. “They made a mistake to not negotiate. Let’s stay strong together.”
Members of the House Freedom Caucus, a bloc of conservative lawmakers, reiterated last week that they will <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/house-freedom-caucus-chairman-responds-as-white-house-lobs-spurious-claims-at-spending-cut-proposal" target="_blank" rel="noopener">refuse</a> to vote for any increase or suspension of the debt ceiling without meaningful spending caps, a framework which has been officially <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/gop-led-house-passes-mccarthys-plan-to-raise-debt-limit" target="_blank" rel="noopener">enacted</a> in the House with the approval of the Limit, Save, Grow Act. McCarthy cannot pass legislation without support from the House Freedom Caucus due to the narrow Republican majority.

Elevated interest rates have recently <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/interest-payments-on-the-national-debt-on-pace-to-surpass-military-spending" target="_blank" rel="noopener">weighed</a> on the budget as lawmakers are forced to devote more revenues toward servicing the obligations rather than funding programs.
Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has repeatedly cautioned that the government could exhaust funds by the first day of June, while one <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/extent-to-which-government-can-be-funded-without-debt-ceiling-is-uncertain-agency-warns" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a> from the Congressional Budget Office warned that there exists considerable “uncertainty” with respect to funds throughout the remainder of May.
