The Pentagon is tracking the social media accounts of service members and War Department employees for messages celebrating or mocking the death of GOP activist Charlie Kirk.
War Chief Pete Hegseth said in a post on social media Thursday that his department would hold accountable those under its pay who have posted offensive messages about Kirk’s assassination earlier this week.
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said Thursday: “It is unacceptable for military personnel and Department of War civilians to celebrate or mock the assassination of a fellow American. The Department of War has zero tolerance for it.”
Hegseth responded to the post: “We are tracking all these very closely — and will address, immediately. Completely unacceptable.”

After Kirk was murdered by an assassin on Wednesday, some parts of social media were flooded with messages mocking the Turning Point USA founder and celebrating the 31-year-old’s death.
Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar is one of the most notable figures to bash Kirk after his murder. The congresswoman from Minnesota <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/social-media-erupts-squad-dems-interview-after-charlie-kirk-assassination-needs-resign">claimed</a> during an interview with Mehdi Hasan this week that Kirk “was willing to debate and downplay the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police … downplay slavery and what black people have gone through in this country by saying Juneteenth should never exist.”
Omar said she has “empathy” for Kirk’s widow and children, but not for the conservative activist.
Others have faced consequences for making similar statements, such as former Middle Tennessee State University Associate Dean of Students Laura Sosh-Lightsy, who <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/tennessee-university-dean-fired-after-saying-she-had-no-sympathy-for-charlie-kirk">wrote</a> on social media: “Looks like ol’ Charlie spoke his fate into existence. Hate begets hate. ZERO sympathy.”
Sosh-Lightsy was fired on Wednesday.
Hegseth’s promise to hold those under the Department of War to a standard of civility over Kirk’s death comes after the DeSantis administration in Florida threatened similar action against educators who openly celebrate Kirk’s death on social media.
Florida Commissioner of Education Anastasios Kamoutsas <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/florida-pledges-to-hold-teachers-accountable-who-celebrate-charlie-kirks-death">sent</a> a memo to educators across the state warning that he “will be conducting an investigation of every educator who engages in this vile, sanctionable behavior.”

President Donald Trump signed an order on Friday, changing the name of the Department of Defense back to the Department of War, arguing that the rebrand marks an important change in America&#8217;s view of foreign conflict.
Trump and renamed Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said in the Oval Office that the rebrand points back to an era in American history when U.S. forces focused on decisive victory. The War Department was established in 1789 after America won the War for Independence, but the name changed to the Department of Defense in 1949, following decades of victories, including in World War I and World War II.
Trump said that the change to Defense Department was evidence of the United States going &#8220;woke.&#8221;

Secretary of War Hegseth said that the United States has &#8220;not won a major war since&#8221; the Department of War changed to the Department of Defense.

President Donald Trump plans to sign an executive order on Friday resurrecting the Department of Defense’s prior moniker, the Department of War.
The order will apply “Department of War” as a secondary title to the Pentagon under the Department of Defense. It will also add the title “secretary of War” to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, according to a White House fact sheet reviewed by <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/trump-rename-pentagon-restoring-historic-department-war-latest-military-move">Fox News</a>.
Hegseth is also expected to draft legislation and potential executive orders that would officially change the name of the Department of Defense to the Department of War.
Hegseth appeared to welcome the news on Thursday evening, posting on X after news of Trump’s impending order broke: “DEPARTMENT OF WAR.”

Hegseth said Wednesday that the name change would reflect a broader cultural shift that the Trump administration has brought to the U.S. military.
“We’re reestablished at the department the warrior ethos. We want warriors, folks that understand how to exact lethality on the enemy. We don&#8217;t want endless contingencies and just playing defense. We think words and names and titles matter. So we&#8217;re working with the White House and the president on it. Stand by,” Hegseth said in an interview on Fox News.
The president has floated the name change before. Last month, Trump strongly suggested that he planned to move ahead with the name change during a press conference in the Oval Office.
“[Defense Secretary] Pete Hegseth has been incredible with the, as I call it, the Department of War. You know, we call it the Department of Defense, but between us, I think we’re going to change the name,” the president <a href="https://thehill.com/policy/defense/5469171-trump-rename-department-war/">said</a>. “You want to know the truth, I think we’re going to have some information on that maybe soon.”
The Department of Defense was previously called the Department of War, first established by President George Washington in 1789. The department carried the name “War” until President Harry Truman reorganized the federal government in 1947. The Department of Defense was so named two years later.
“It used to be called the Department of War, and it had a stronger sound and, as you know, we won World War I, we won World War II, we won everything. Now, we have a Department of Defense with defenders,” Trump said on August 25.
“I don’t want to be defense only. We want defense, but we want offense, too, if that’s okay,” he continued, adding, “as Department of War, we won everything. We won everything. And I think we’re gonna have to go back to that.”
GOP Sen. Mike Lee of Utah said last month that he would introduce legislation to codify changing the name officially to the Department of War.

A 2022 <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/359139539_Interrupting_Bias_in_Army_Talent_Management">paper</a> published in the U.S. Army War College Quarterly noted of the program:

One framework for diversity consists of primary dimensions, such as age, sexual orientation, physical abilities, race, gender, spiritual beliefs, and class &#8230;”
The Command Assessment Program replaced the Army’s Centralized Selection Board/List, which was not based on peer evaluations and behavioral analysis. “Former Army Secretary Christine Wormuth made CAP an official program of record just days before President Donald Trump took office,” Military Times pointed out.
“More than half of the Army’s senior officers are turning down opportunities to command &#8230; Historically, 85% of those participants have been deemed fit for command. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced on Wednesday that he was putting an end to a program that had for nearly ten years allowed Chinese coders access to Department of Defense cloud systems.
Hegseth shared a video in which he described the &#8220;Digital Escorts&#8221; program — implemented under former President Barack Obama — under which Microsoft employed Chinese coders to &#8220;support sensitive DOD cloud systems&#8221; under the supervision of American contractors.

&#8220;Last month the Department of Defense was made aware of an Obama-Biden era legacy program called Digital Escorts,&#8221; Hegseth began. &#8220;For nearly a decade, Microsoft has used Chinese coders, remotely supervised by U.S. contractors, to support sensitive DOD cloud systems. The program was designed to comply with contracting rules but it exposed the department to unacceptable risk.&#8221;
&#8220;I mean, if you&#8217;re thinking &#8216;America First,&#8217; and common sense, this doesn&#8217;t pass either of those tests,&#8221; Hegseth continued. &#8220;So I initiated an immediate review of this vulnerability and I want to report our initial findings.&#8221;
Hegseth went on to explain that his review had determined that any benefits were not worth the potential risk of allowing Chinese nationals to have that kind of access to sensitive information, especially information pertaining to Defense Department.
&#8220;The use of Chinese Nationals to service Department of Defense cloud environments? It&#8217;s over,&#8221; he declared. &#8220;We&#8217;ve issued a formal letter of concern to Microsoft documenting this breach of trust, and we&#8217;re requiring a third party audit of Microsoft&#8217;s Digital Escort program — including the code and the submissions by Chinese nationals.&#8221;
Hegseth also announced a separate investigation into the program and into all of the Chinese nationals who had been part of it: &#8220;Did they put anything in the code that we didn&#8217;t know about? We&#8217;re going to find out.&#8221;
&#8220;It blows my mind that I&#8217;m even saying these things, it&#8217;s such common sense,&#8221; Hegseth said as he once again reiterated his intent to remove all Chinese employees from access to DOD information. &#8220;We expect vendors doing business with the Department of Defense to put U.S. national security ahead of profit maximization &#8230; This never should have happened in the first place.&#8221;

A reporter told Trump that officially renaming the Department of Defence would require an act of Congress. Trump replied that he did not think it would, but regardless, he guessed that Congress would approve such a name change if Congress is needed. GOP Sen. The Washington Post got slammed after it published a report attacking Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for the security personnel protecting his family.
“<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2025/08/20/hegseth-security-detail/">Hegseth’s expansive security requirements tax Army protective unit</a>,” the Post headline claimed, followed by a report about Hegseth&#8217;s “unusually large personal security requirements.”
The article referred to Hegseth’s family residences in Minnesota, Tennessee, and Washington, D.C., while using the typical leftist media tactic of quoting numerous anonymous sources.
The Post painted a conspiratorial picture to target Hegseth, quoting an unidentified “CID official, who like some others spoke on the condition of anonymity citing a fear of reprisal.” That nameless official claimed, “I’ve never seen this many security teams for one guy. Nobody has.”
The story went on to say that the Post “withheld several sensitive details gathered in the course of reporting this article, including the size of Hegseth’s protective details and the precise locations where they are assigned.”

It quoted another anonymous person claiming, “We have complete inability to achieve our most basic missions,” adding that “people familiar with the matter” alleged that when Hegseth became Defense Secretary, &#8220;a call went out for many more” agents to protect his family.
“One person characterized the figure as ‘400 and going up.’ Another said it’s ‘over 500,’” The Post reported.
Finally, in paragraph 14, the Post acknowledged, “Shortly after Hegseth was nominated to become defense secretary, a bomb threat was made against his home in Tennessee.” But that was immediately followed by this: “Hegseth, 45, a former National Guard officer and Fox News personality, was among Trump’s most polarizing Cabinet selections, and his tenure thus far has been mired in tumult.”
“CID protection has on occasion extended to Pete Hegseth’s and Jennifer Hegseth’s former spouses to protect the children, two of the officials said. Two other officials called this arrangement unusual. Another said it was something they had never seen before in their many years at the agency,” the Post reported.
Chief Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell harshly criticized the Post, writing on X:

In a show of grit and camaraderie, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. unveiled the &#8220;Pete and Bobby Challenge&#8221; on Monday with a Pentagon gym showdown.
The duo released a high-energy video urging Americans to test themselves with 100 push-ups and 50 pull-ups against the clock—a fitness feat that saw Hegseth, 45, narrowly edge out the 71-year-old Kennedy, while military personnel in the room crushed the same routine.
&#8220;We had our Pete and Bobby challenge today, 50 pull-ups. 100 push-ups. You try to get under five minutes,&#8221; Kennedy explained, calling the five-minute goal the top standard. “Pete and I are going to do our part and encourage America’s youth to do this challenge&#8230;in any order you want in less than 10 minutes.”
Hegseth, a battle-tested veteran, completed the challenge in 5:25, while Kennedy, who wore blue jeans, finished in 5:48.

After celebrating one participant completing the routine in just 2:43, Hegseth joked, “Maybe we should send the challenge to [Transportation Secretary] Sean Duffy! &#8230; I’m going to throw it on the military side, too. Let’s challenge the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, &#8216;Razin&#8217; Caine! And then my friend on TV, [Fox News journalist] Will Cain. “We hope Americans will take this challenge and you’ll pass it along so that we’re fit the way we need to and be healthy and have a healthy fighting force,” Hegseth enthused.
“Let’s make America healthy again,” Kennedy concludes.
“Amen,” Hegseth, a devoutly religious Christian, agrees.
In March, Hegseth issued a <a href="https://www.defense.gov/News/Releases/Release/Article/4118161/rapid-force-wide-review-of-military-standards/">memo</a> ordering a department-wide review of existing standards set by U.S. military branches pertaining to physical fitness. He declared, “We must remain vigilant in maintaining the standards that enable the men and women of our military to protect the American people and our homeland as the world&#8217;s most lethal and effective fighting force. Our adversaries are not growing weaker, and our tasks are not growing less challenging.”
In April, Hegseth gave a speech at the Army War College in which he <a href="https://www.defense.gov/News/Speeches/Speech/Article/4164715/remarks-by-secretary-of-defense-pete-hegseth-at-the-army-war-college-as-deliver/">stated</a>, “To be lethal, you have to trust that the warrior alongside you in battle or the troops fighting in the unit that many of you will lead are capable, truly physically capable of doing what is necessary under fire. You need to be fit, not fat, sharp, not shabby.”

Speaking on Tuesday, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth sent a <a href="applewebdata://952E91CB-AC1F-46A3-A670-13239822B5F5/v">warning</a> that the Trump administration would investigate who is buying land around U.S. military bases in the homeland.
“Congressional Republicans have introduced companion bills to halt Chinese purchases outright, and the Pentagon is aligning with USDA and the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) to identify and shut down high-risk acquisitions,” North Carolina journalist Sloan Rachmuth <a href="https://ncpoliticaltea.substack.com/p/secretary-of-defense-sounds-alarm">noted</a> on Substack.
“I want to know who owns the land around our bases and strategic bases, and getting an understanding of why foreign entities, foreign companies, foreign individuals, might be buying up land around those bases,” Hegseth asserted. “That’s something I should be paying attention to on behalf of the American people, on behalf of my department and on behalf of the president. It’s common sense. And so, food security, just like energy resilience, just like where we get our water, that’s all national security, especially in a contingency.&#8221;
“So we would be asleep at the wheel if we were not fully a party to an effort like this to ensure that our nation had the food supply it needs, but specifically our troops have what they need on our basis so that in those moments, you can rely on us here in the United States to provide that security,” he continued, warning, “So no longer can foreign adversaries assume we’re not watching and we’re not paying attention and we’re not doing something because we are.”
In April, Rep. Pat Harrigan (R-NC) introduced the <a href="https://harriganforms.house.gov/UploadedFiles/Military_Installation_Retail_Security_Act_TEXT.pdf" data-extlink="">Military Installation Retail Security Act</a>, which would ban companies owned by enemy nations from operating retail stores on U.S. military installations. In October 2023, Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) <a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/senate-bill/3077/text">introduced</a> the “Protect Our Bases Act,” which would “require the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States to annually review and update the facilities and property of the United States Government determined to be national security sensitive for purposes of review of real estate transactions.” Chairman Scott <a href="https://www.banking.senate.gov/newsroom/majority/scott-colleagues-lead-effort-to-strengthen-review-of-foreign-land-purchases-near-sensitive-us-military-sites" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.banking.senate.gov/newsroom/majority/scott-colleagues-lead-effort-to-strengthen-review-of-foreign-land-purchases-near-sensitive-us-military-sites&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1755270797423000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1a3bKXEB91EOCDYqR59CAy">reintroduced</a> the Protect Our Bases Act this June, with Sens. Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Mike Rounds (R-S.D.), Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), John Kennedy (R-La.), Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.), Katie Britt (R-Ala.), Pete Ricketts (R-Neb.), Jim Banks (R-Ind.), Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio), and Dave McCormick (R-Pa.) all cosponsoring.
In the North Carolina Senate, lawmakers introduced the <a href="https://www.ncleg.gov/Sessions/2025/Bills/Senate/PDF/S338v1.pdf">NC Farmland and Military Protection Act</a>, which would bar any foreign government from buying land within a 25-mile radius of military installations. The North Carolina House is considering a similarly named bill, which would increase that radius to 75 miles. North Carolina is the home of Fort Bragg, Pope Army Airfield, and Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, among other military bases.
“Agriculture is our largest industry, generating <a href="https://www.ncagr.gov/news/press-releases/2024/05/18/economic-impact-nc-agriculture-and-agribusiness-jumps-1111-billion-second-straight-year-strong?utm_source=chatgpt.com">$111 billion a year</a> and covering over 8 million acres. The military is our second-largest sector, adding up to $80 billion annually and supporting more than 650,000 jobs,” Rachmuth noted. “Allowing hostile governments to buy farmland near these sites is not just an economic risk — it’s a direct threat to operational security. Property near runways, radar stations, or training grounds can be used for surveillance equipment, drone staging, or subtle encroachment on military activities.”
In 2023, the people of North Dakota saw a Chinese plan for opening a corn mill near a sensitive military base and took matters into their own hands, blocking the project.
The Grand Forks City Council, aware that the U.S. military did not have jurisdiction to kill the project, voted unanimously in February 2023 to block Chinese food producer Fufeng Group from building the mill only 12 miles from the Grand Forks Air Force Base. In spring 2022, three North Dakotans sold the land for millions of dollars; the town’s mayor, Brandon Bochenski, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2022/07/01/chinese-purchase-of-north-dakota-farmland-raises-national-security-concerns-in-washington.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pointed out</a> that the proposed $700 million plant would create more than 200 jobs, but also admitted there were national security concerns.
“The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) considered an October 2022 filing by the Fufeng Group to acquire certain assets in the vicinity of Grand Forks, North Dakota. Grand Forks Air Force Base is the center of military activities related to both air and space operations,” U.S. Air Force Assistant Secretary Andrew P. Hunter <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11704309/Air-Force-shoots-Chinas-plan-build-corn-15-miles-North-Dakota-base.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">warned</a> North Dakota Senators John Hoeven and Kevin Cramer in January.
“While CFIUS concluded that it did not have jurisdiction, the Department’s view is unambiguous: the proposed project represents a significant threat to national security with both near and long-term risks of significant impacts to our operations in the area,” he added.
“With regard to Fufeng, if you’re going to strategically decouple, that means we don’t want their investment,” Cramer <a href="https://www.am1100theflag.com/show-episodes/48874-6-03-22-whats-on-your-mind-hour-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> last June.

President Donald Trump promised on Monday to clean up crime and vagrancy in the nation&#8217;s capital by shifting more responsibilities over the district to the federal government. 
Trump made the announcement during a press conference at the White House, where he laid out a number of executive actions he was taking to fight violent crime, decrease homelessness, and otherwise clean up Washington, D.C. 
“I&#8217;m announcing a historic action to rescue our nation&#8217;s capital from crime, bloodshed, bedlam, and squalor, and worse,” Trump said. “ This is Liberation Day in D.C., and we&#8217;re gonna take our capital back. We&#8217;re taking it back.” 
Trump on Monday invoked Section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act and declared a public emergency. This granted him to move the D.C. Police Department under the control of the Justice Department. DEA Administrator Terry Cole will head the department, per Trump&#8217;s orders. 
Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Attorney General Pam Bondi, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, and U.S. District Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro all appeared alongside Trump at the news conference.
The president also added that he was sending 800 National Guard troops to patrol the streets of D.C. Last week, the administration sent 500 federal agents into the district, including from the FBI, ATF, DEA, Park Police, the U.S. Marshal Service, the Secret Service, and the Department of Homeland Security. 
“The murder rate in Washington today is higher than that of Bogota, Colombia, Mexico City, some of the places that you hear about as being the worst places on earth,” Trump said, adding that “the only language” that criminals understand is when you “knock the hell out of them.” 
The president added that he would like to see Republicans in Congress move to end cashless bail in the district, saying that the policy led to lawlessness in the streets. Trump added that he planned to improve infrastructure in the district and crack down on homeless encampments. 
“We&#8217;re going to replace the medians that are falling down all over the roads. We&#8217;re gonna replace the potholes,” he said. 
Burgum, who briefly spoke during the conference, said that Park Police had cleared over 70 homeless camps from D.C. since March 27. 
“We’re going to be removing homeless encampments from all over our parks, our beautiful, beautiful parks, which now a lot of people can&#8217;t walk on,” Trump said. “We&#8217;re moving the encampments away, trying to take care of people. Some of those people, we don&#8217;t know how they even got there.”

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed on Tuesday that he had overturned a recent order banning traditional tactics used by drill sergeants to train new recruits, a move he says will ensure soldiers are equipped for battle.
On July 30, Col. Christopher J. Hallows, Commander of the 197th Infantry at Fort Benning, Georgia, issued a memo banning &#8220;bay tossing,&#8221; <a href="https://justthenews.com/government/security/make-basic-great-again-hegseth-looks-return-drill-sergeant-shark-attacks-basic">according</a> to Just the News. The practice involves drill sergeants entering trainees&#8217; bunk rooms — called  &#8220;bays&#8221; — unannounced, inspecting wall lockers and bunks, and then flipping over mattresses and lockers that don&#8217;t pass muster, and loudly ordering trainees to quickly clean up the mess.
Hallows said bay tossing violated Army values and amounted to &#8220;abuse&#8221; of the trainees.
&#8220;Abuse of Trainees undermines the trust of the American public by violating Army Values, disrupting military order and discipline, and destroying a positive training environment,&#8221; his memo stated. &#8220;Our mission is to provide competent, capable, well-trained Soldiers of good character, ready to fight and win our nation’s wars &#8230; there is no greater obstacle to the effectiveness of the IMT [initial military training] environment than the improper treatment of Trainees.”
Hegseth disagreed, however, and reversed Hallows&#8217; order.
&#8220;Bottom Line: Make BASIC Great Again,&#8221; a Pentagon source told Just the News. &#8220;Tossing bunks is back. Drill sergeants are back. Getting cursed at is back.&#8221;
A Pentagon source told Just The News that Hegseth&#8217;s decision was rooted in a desire to ensure that &#8220;the people we want to recruit want to be challenged, and the tougher the training the more cohesive the units are &#8230; We don’t want to have training that is designed to breed undisciplined people and recruit those that gravitate to wanting to be wimps.&#8221;
Hegseth also signaled openness to reviving &#8220;shark attacks,&#8221; where drill sergeants greet recruits upon arrival at training camps and order them to do push-ups and other tasks before they&#8217;ve even set their bags down. The exercise is meant to gauge how recruits handle pressure and chaos.

The practice was largely ended in 2020 and replaced with an exercise referred to as &#8220;The First 100 Yards,&#8221; a slightly more organized and structured training exercise designed to build camaraderie and encourage teamwork under stress.
&#8220;&#8216;The First 100 Yards&#8217; is a U.S. Army Trainees first exposure to their Basic Training (BCT), Drill Sergeants, and their first opportunity to begin their transformation as members of the world&#8217;s most potent and lethal fighting force,&#8221; the U.S. Army Center for Initial Military Training posted on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=477892021959152">Facebook</a>. &#8220;&#8216;The First 100 Yards,&#8217; a homage to their lineage of closing the last 100 yards of the fight, incorporates teamwork into a competition that features mental and physical challenges on the day they arrive to their basic training company.&#8221;
According to Jennifer S. Gunn, the director of public affairs at the Maneuver Center of Excellence and Fort Benning, the initial bay-tossing ban stemmed from a specific incident in which a trainee&#8217;s personal property was damaged — and Hallows had initially endeavored to prevent that from happening again.
&#8220;I can confirm the memos are authentic and were the result of a recent review by the brigade command team,&#8221; she explained. &#8220;During a recent training cycle, an instance of corrective action violated regulation and resulted in damage to both government and trainee personal property.&#8221;
