<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Things seemed to be trending upward for NYC sports after a long period of disappointment. The <strong>New York Knicks</strong> were coming off an <strong>NBA Finals</strong> win earlier this year, seemingly lifting a curse over the city. If the Knicks could do it, anyone could.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It started to look that way. The <strong>New York Giants</strong> were 1-0 for the first time since 2022 and the <strong>New York Yankees</strong> were heating up right before the playoffs. But on Tuesday, New York sports fans were given terrible news just after lunch when it was announced that stars <strong>Aaron Judge</strong> and <strong>Jaxson Dart</strong> were going to miss extended time.</p>

It’s unclear whether he can return later in the playoffs if the Yankees advance past the first round.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A promising start to the season after a dominant win over the division rival <strong>Dallas Cowboys</strong> has come crashing down following Dart’s injury, as the offense looked horrendous with <strong>Jameis Winston</strong> at the helm.</p>
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Judge and Dart news came like a 1-2 punch, and it’s hard not to feel for the New York fans who have seemingly already been through enough.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">John died Saturday at his home in Florida. His wife, Cheryl John, said the cause was bladder cancer.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">John won 288 games during a career that stretched from 1963 to 1989 — the second-most by any pitcher of the modern era who has not been elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. He pitched for the Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, California Angels, and Oakland Athletics.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But John’s greatest contribution to baseball came after his career appeared to be over. On July 17, 1974, while pitching for the Dodgers, John tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow. At the time, such an injury was generally considered career-ending for a pitcher.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Dodgers team physician Dr. Frank Jobe offered John an experimental alternative: reconstructing the damaged ligament using a tendon taken from his right forearm. Jobe reportedly gave John roughly a 1% chance of returning to the mound.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">John underwent the procedure in September 1974, missed the 1975 season, and returned in 1976. He went on to pitch another 14 seasons, winning 164 games after the surgery.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">His best years came after the operation. John won 20 games three times, including consecutive 20-win seasons with the Yankees in 1979 and 1980. He finished his career with a 288-231 record, a 3.34 ERA, and 2,245 strikeouts.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The procedure became known as Tommy John surgery and has since transformed baseball. More than 1,000 professional pitchers have undergone the operation, according to the </span><a href="https://www.ama-assn.org/public-health/prevention-wellness/what-doctors-want-patients-know-about-tommy-john-surgery"><span style="font-weight: 400;">American Medical Association</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, while roughly one-third of active Major League pitchers had undergone the procedure as of 2023.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Among the many stars to return from Tommy John surgery are Shohei Ohtani, Tyler Glasnow, Hunter Greene, Justin Verlander, Chris Sale, Jacob deGrom, and Gerrit Cole. Hall of Famers John Smoltz, Paul Molitor, and Billy Wagner also underwent the procedure.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">John and Jobe were honored by the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2013 for their contributions to baseball.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Despite his accomplishments, John never received enough support for induction into the Hall of Fame. He spent 15 years on the Baseball Writers’ Association of America ballot and never received more than 31.7% of the vote.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">John later became a broadcaster, coach, minor league manager, and motivational speaker. He also became critical of the increasing use of Tommy John surgery among young pitchers, arguing that the procedure should not be treated as an easy solution to preventable arm injuries. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">John is survived by his wife, Cheryl, and three children. His son Taylor died in 2010.</span></p>

<p>&#8220;The fans were really nice,&#8221; Trump told Fox &amp; Friends on Friday morning during an interview in the studio. &#8220;You never know what you&#8217;re going to get in New York, but we got a tremendous applause because they love this country.&#8221;</p>
<p>The Yankees remembered 9/11 during remarks before the game, and the team&#8217;s scoreboard showed an American flag alongside the inscription, “September 11, 2001, We Shall Not Forget.”</p>
<p>Despite the warm welcome for Trump, his security remained intense. Fans were &#8220;strongly urged to arrive as early as possible&#8221; due to the heightened security, and the Secret Service encouraged fans to leave bags at home, according to the Associated Press. Trump watched the game from the Yankees owner&#8217;s family suite behind three panes of bulletproof glass, the Post reported.</p>
<p>Trump attended the game just one day after the assassination of his loyal supporter and influential conservative, Charlie Kirk. On Wednesday night, the Yankees <span style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">observed a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/new-york-yankees-honor-charlie-kirk-with-moment-of-silence" target="_blank" rel="noopener">moment of silence</a> in honor of</span> Kirk.</p>
<p>Trump spoke to the Yankees in their clubhouse before Thursday night&#8217;s game against the Detroit Tigers, telling them, &#8220;You&#8217;re gonna win,&#8221; The New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/09/11/us-news/trump-cheered-on-at-yankee-stadium-by-fans-accurately-predicts-victory-youre-gonna-win/?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=nypost&amp;utm_source=twitter">reported</a>. The president&#8217;s prediction was correct as the Yankees, led by their star slugger Aaron Judge, beat the Tigers 9-3. In his first at-bat in the first inning, Judge launched a home run 413 feet to center field, and the Yankees&#8217; best player wasn&#8217;t finished, smacking another 434-foot home run ball to center field.</p>
<p>Judge&#8217;s incredible performance came after Trump praised him in the clubhouse before the game.</p>
<p>&#8220;You’re a fantastic player. … You’re an unbelievable player,&#8221; Trump told Judge, according to the Post.</p>
<p>Judge said that meeting Trump was “a surreal moment,” the Associated Press reported.</p>
<p>“He came in here, and he told us we were going to win, so I think that gave everybody the confidence in this room to go out there and do it,&#8221; Judge added. &#8220;I guess we’ve got to have him around more often.”</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Gardner spent his entire 14-year MLB career with the Yankees. He played his last game in 2021 and has been spending his retirement with his family in South Carolina.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Yankees issued a statement, saying, “Our hearts are heavy, and the Yankees family is filled with grief after learning of the passing of Miller Gardner. Words feel insignificant and insufficient in trying to describe such an unimaginable loss. It wasn’t just Brett who literally grew up in this organization for more than 17 years — so did his wife, Jessica, and their two boys, Hunter and Miller.”</span></p>
<p>Yankees manager Aaron Boone called the news “unimaginable.”</p>

<p style="font-weight: 400;">On Friday, New York Yankees managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner announced the team would no longer force its players to be clean-shaven.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">“In recent weeks I have spoken to a large number of former and current Yankees — spanning several eras — to elicit their perspectives on our longstanding facial hair and grooming policy, and I appreciate their earnest and varied feedback,” Steinbrenner said in a statement posted on X. “These most recent conversations are an extension of ongoing internal dialogue that dates back several years. Ultimately the final decision rests with me, and after great consideration, we will be amending our expectations to allow our players and uniformed personnel to have well-groomed beards moving forward. It is the appropriate time to move beyond the familiar comfort of our former policy.”</p>

<p style="font-weight: 400;">“Steinbrenner said he spoke with several players earlier this week, including team captain Aaron Judge, right-hander Gerrit Cole and designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton. All were in favor of updating the policy,” MLB.com <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/yankees-change-facial-hair-policy">reported</a>.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">“It’s appropriate. It makes sense,” Cole offered. “It still embodies our look and neatness, but allows for some individual freedom and a few less razor burns.”</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Long beards may not pass the test; general manager Brian Cashman said: “We’re not trying to look like <em>Duck Dynasty</em>.” One concern expressed by the Yankees is that a free agent who sported facial hair might be lost because of the prior policy. “We never want to miss out on one player. If we miss out on one player because of that [policy], that’s too many,” manager Aaron Boone explained.</p>

<p style="font-weight: 400;">The policy was implemented by Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, who had served in the military, in the 1970s. “I have nothing against long hair per se,” Steinbrenner said in 1978, “but I’m trying to instill a certain sense of order and discipline in the ballclub, because I think discipline is important in an athlete. The players can joke about it, as long as they do it.”</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">“Winning was the most important thing to my father,” Steinbrenner added. “If somebody came and told him that they were very sure this could affect us getting the players we want to get … I think he might be a little more apt to do the change than people think, because it was about winning.”</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">“All players, coaches and male executives are forbidden to display any facial hair other than mustaches [except for religious reasons], and scalp hair may not be grown below the collar,” the team’s player manual states. “Long sideburns and mutton chops are not specifically banned.”</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">In the 1970s, one of the greatest teams of all time, the Cincinnati Reds, with Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, and Tony Perez on the team, were forbidden from sporting facial hair by general manager Bob Howsam, who was supported by manager Sparky Anderson. Howsam also banned long hair and demanded the team wear suit jackets for traveling.</p>
