Dixville Notch, New Hampshire, reported the first results from the 2024 election just past midnight on Tuesday, with the tiny hamlet deadlocking 3-3 for Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump.
Tuesday’s early morning results are the best Trump has fared in the first-in-the-nation ballot, a tradition that dates back to 1960, according to <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/harris-trump-showdown-first-votes-cast-midnight-tiny-new-hampshire-township" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fox News</a>. In 2020, Dixville Notch’s six votes – cast by four Republicans and two independents – went for President Joe Biden. In 2016, Trump received two votes and lost narrowly to Hillary Clinton’s three. One vote went third party.
The hamlet’s longtime town moderator who oversees the vote, Tom Tillotson, said after the results that Dixville Notch was “following the national trend,” according to <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/11/05/dixville-notch-new-hampshire-vote-harris-trump/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Washington Post</a>, a reference to virtually even splits in a large number of polls. The averages for polling out of the swing states are all within three points, with most falling within two points, according to <a href="https://www.realclearpolling.com/elections/president/2024/battleground-states" target="_blank" rel="noopener">RealClearPolitics</a>.
Dixville Notch residents also cast ballots in the New Hampshire governor’s race, with a clear preference for Republican Kelly Ayotte. Ayotte received five votes to one for Democrat Joyce Craig.

Dixville Notch is one of a handful of New Hampshire towns that have a tradition of midnight voting, though Dixville Notch was the only polling place to hold its election at midnight this year.
The hamlet’s election tradition often draws reporters to watch the results of the first-in-the-nation contest, which had been bigger prior to the closing of the Balsams Hotel in 2011. The results of the hamlet’s election have never been seen as predictive, however.
One of the township&#8217;s voters, Les Otton, is the lead developer for the Balsams aiming to reopen the hotel. Otton said of Dixville Notch’s midnight voting tradition that “if we can help people get out and understand that voting is an important part of their right as an American citizen, that’s perhaps the key to what we’re doing,” according to <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/11/05/politics/dixville-notch-new-hampshire-2024-results/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CNN</a>.

In an endorsement that could prove pivotal in New Hampshire, the state&#8217;s Libertarian Party endorsed former President Donald Trump.
New Hampshire has four electoral votes; those could prove decisive if there is a closely contested vote in the presidential election. In the RealClearPolitics polling <a href="https://www.realclearpolling.com/polls/president/general/2024/new-hampshire/trump-vs-harris" target="_blank" rel="noopener">average</a>, Harris has a 3.5-point advantage. According to the New Hampshire <a href="//D1C3E52E-290A-4C37-B1BF-A7ADC649117F/v" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Secretary of State,</a> as of September 30, Republicans have 308,223 registered voters, while Democrats have 268,943. The state will likely be decided by the 318,221 undeclared voters.
“Donald Trump is officially endorsed by the Libertarian Party of New Hampshire for President,” the party’s announcement began. “This was not a light decision. But we feel it is the right one for ourselves, for our children, and for the best future of a Free State of New Hampshire. Donald Trump is not a libertarian. Nonetheless, Trump is the best candidate for libertarians.”

The announcement then continued by issuing a list of the reasons they favored Trump, then continued, “Trump promises much and we are skeptical of promises from politicians. However, we know for certain what the Democrat alternative is: more socialism, more censorship, more taxes, more authoritarianism.”
After urging their supporters not to vote for the Libertarian presidential candidate on the ballot, they declared, “The barbarians are at the gates. We must make sure that New Hampshire continues to repel progressives, socialists, communists, and leftists of all stripes. New Hampshire being the only red state in a blue New England helps achieve that goal. For these reasons and more, the most popular Libertarian state affiliate in the country is endorsing Donald Trump for President. Now get out there and vote!”

New Hampshire has not voted for a Republican presidential candidate since 2000, although Trump lost an incredibly close contest in 2016, losing by less than a percentage point to Hillary Clinton. In that election, 6.72% of the vote went to third-party candidates.

New Hampshire GOP Congressional candidate National Security Advisor Lily Tang Williams wrecked Democratic candidate Maggie Goodlander, the wife of President Joe Biden’s National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, after Goodlander accused Williams of embracing policies that gave a “break for the wealthiest.”
Lily Tang Williams, 60, is a lawyer who fled communist China <a href="applewebdata://DA670680-ACB2-4AB0-9146-1D4CC69ACA3E/v">with only $100 in her pocket</a> and became a U.S. citizen in 1994; she married her husband John Williams in 1990. Goodlander, 38, came from the “politically connected Tampsoi family of Nashua,” The New Hampshire Center for Public Interest Journalism <a href="https://indepthnh.org/2024/10/31/polar-opposite-candidates-goodlander-and-tang-williams-debate-for-congressional-district-2-seat/">noted</a>. The two candidates are vying for the seat in the Granite State&#8217;s Second Congressional District.
“This is a worldview that my opponent has embraced,” Goodlander, a Democrat, accused. “She believes that we should give a break to the wealthiest and the biggest corporations and hope for the best; hope that the results will trickle down to hard-working people. I take a very different approach; I believe that the middle class deserves a tax-cut, and I believe that we will do a lot for this country by ensuring that we don’t continue this disastrous tax policy.”

The New Hampshire Journal <a href="https://nhjournal.com/goodlander-throws-hat-and-maiden-name-into-dem-primary-ring/">reported</a> in May of Sullivan and Goodlander, “The two own a home in Portsmouth — which is not in the district. But she told the Left-leaning Boston Globe that she just signed a lease for a home in Nashua. ‘I am a renter, and there should be more renters in Congress,’ she said.”
The New Hampshire Journal added:

PORTSMOUTH, NH—New Hampshire voters said they were shocked by a new poll that shows former President Donald Trump has surpassed Vice President Kamala Harris in the state for the first time this cycle.
Following the release of the poll, RealClearPolitics’ election forecast <a href="https://www.realclearpolling.com/maps/president/2024/toss-up/electoral-college-state-changes">reclassified</a> New Hampshire as a toss-up state.
“You just gave me a panic attack, I can’t think,” Alyssa told The Daily Wire. “I guess, yes it does surprise me.”

Several voters said they doubted the poll, conducted by the New Hampshire Journal and Praecones Analytica, which showed Trump taking a lead of 50.2 percent to Harris’s 49.8 percent.
“You have got to look at who puts out the polls,” George said. “They are so skewed.”
George added that he thinks Harris will “definitely win” in New Hampshire.
A Republican presidential candidate has not won New Hampshire in a general election since 2000. Hillary Clinton won the state by 0.3 points in 2016 and President Joe Biden won the state by 7.2 points in 2020, <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/donald-trump-kamala-harris-polls-new-hampshire-1977839">according to Newsweek</a>. Most New Hampshire polls show Harris ahead by more than five points.
Matti said she was  not surprised by Trump gaining momentum in the polls, and believes that he has more support in the state now than he did in 2016 or 2020.
“I grew up around here,” Matti said. “More signs, hearing through my peers, people at work, people in town are mostly leaning toward that way which is a good sign.”
Matti added that she believes Trump will win the election.
Cody, a local business owner in Portsmouth, said he isn’t surprised by the polls, and made the case for why the former president has his support. 
“Regardless of who you are voting for, look at it this way: Trump is Godzilla,” Cody said. “Everybody hates Godzilla when he is destroying the town, but what happens? He leaves and then a worse monster comes in and starts going absolutely crazy and who does everyone cry for to come back? Godzilla.”
Several of the interviewees said the main issue they care about this election is ensuring access to abortion.
“I care about women’s rights,” Mary said. “You’ve got to have control over your own body.”
Mary said she thinks poll respondents who said they are voting for Trump are listening “to a lot of media that’s just blowing things up and not being truthful” adding that she thinks people need to “read and listen to NPR and really get the news.”
“I’m queer, so I’d really like if I kept my rights and stuff,” Mimi said.
Jack, who was standing by the road with a Kamala Harris, sign listed several reasons why he is voting for Harris.
“Low unemployment, everyone is working, the economy is doing great, and we still have healthcare,” red jacket said. “Obamacare is still in effect, which is wonderful.”

A slew of New Hampshire school districts have policies about trans-identifying children that keep parents in the dark about their child&#8217;s gender identity.
At least three school districts in the blue state explicitly forbid staff from informing parents about a student&#8217;s gender identity change, Parents Defending Education found.
Those districts are the Portsmouth School District, the Keene School District, and the Exeter Region Cooperative School District.
“School personnel should not disclose information that may reveal a student’s gender identity and expression to others, including parents, and other school personnel, unless legally required to do so or unless the student has authorized such disclosure,&#8221; the Portsmouth district&#8217;s <a href="https://www.cityofportsmouth.com/school/portsmouth-school-district-policies-section-j" target="_blank" rel="noopener">policy</a> <a href="https://defendinged.org/incidents/portsmouth-school-district-has-policy-to-explicitly-keep-the-gender-identity-of-students-hidden-from-parents/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reads</a>.
The Keene district&#8217;s <a href="https://www.keeneschoolsnh.org/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=1220701&amp;type=d&amp;pREC_ID=1456319" target="_blank" rel="noopener">policy</a> is <a href="https://defendinged.org/incidents/keene-school-district-has-policy-that-explicitly-tells-staff-to-keep-gender-identity-of-students-hidden-from-parents/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">worded</a> similarly — it specifically prohibits disclosing to parents, and <a href="https://www.sau16.org/en-US/board-info-ceeefbec/exeter-region-coop-550c7996/policies-6ed7a9a9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">so is</a> the Exeter school district&#8217;s <a href="https://defendinged.org/incidents/exeter-region-cooperative-school-district-has-policy-to-keep-gender-identity-of-students-hidden-from-parents/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">policy</a>.
&#8220;Transgender and gender nonconforming students have the right to discuss and express their gender identity and expression openly and to decide when, with whom, and how much to share private information,&#8221; the Keene district&#8217;s policy adds.
The Manchester School District&#8217;s <a href="https://www.mansd.org/o/msd/page/msd-policy-students-100-1-transgender-and-gender-non-conforming-students" target="_blank" rel="noopener">policy</a> does not mention parents specifically, but it <a href="https://defendinged.org/incidents/manchester-school-district-has-policy-that-appears-to-explain-that-students-can-make-decisions-regarding-their-gender-identity-without-parental-consent/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">does</a> say school staff must hide a student&#8217;s new name and pronouns unless the student has given permission.
Several other New Hampshire districts have policies that suggest a student could talk to school administrators about their gender identity without involving a parent.
The Nashua School District, the Concord School District, and the Dover School District all have policies like this.
The Nashua district&#8217;s policy <a href="https://www.nashua.edu/Page/777" target="_blank" rel="noopener">states</a> that &#8220;parents and/or students are encouraged to discuss with building administrators any issues that may arise in relation to student’s transgender and non-conforming status.&#8221;

Students might discuss privacy, official school records, names and pronouns, using the restrooms and locker rooms of the opposite sex, sex-segregated activities like sports, the dress code, and &#8220;safety and support,&#8221; the policy <a href="https://defendinged.org/incidents/nashua-school-district-has-policy-that-appears-to-explain-that-students-can-make-decisions-regarding-their-gender-identity-without-parental-consent/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">says</a>.
The Concord district <a href="https://defendinged.org/incidents/concord-school-district-does-not-require-parental-consent-to-allow-students-to-identify-as-another-gender/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">says</a> either a student &#8220;or&#8221; their parent can ask for a &#8220;Gender Support and Transition Plan,&#8221; and the Dover <a href="https://www.dover.k12.nh.us/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=1280259&amp;type=d&amp;pREC_ID=1492338" target="_blank" rel="noopener">district</a> <a href="https://defendinged.org/incidents/dover-school-district-has-policy-that-appears-to-explain-that-students-can-make-decisions-regarding-their-gender-identity-without-parental-consent-training-states-that-district-could-adopt-procedures/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">says</a> a trans-identifying student &#8220;and/or&#8221; their parent can contact the student counselor about gender identity issues.
Gender ideology in schools exploded as a hot-button issue several years ago.
Many tweens and teens discovered gender ideology online during the pandemic, and later, parents realized their children&#8217;s schools were keeping them in the dark about their child&#8217;s gender identity change.
A wave of parents across the country pushed back, calling for schools to adopt parental notification policies, and many districts did so.
Transgender medicalization of children, such as breast and genital surgeries, puberty blockers, and cross-sex hormones, continues to be a fiercely controversial issue this presidential election cycle.
&#8220;Parents first and foremost know what is best for their children,&#8221; Casey Ryan, investigative reporter for Parents Defending Education, said in a statement to The Daily Wire.
&#8220;The fact that New Hampshire school districts have adopted policies to strip parents of their rights is nothing short of despicable. If these school districts practiced what they preached in caring for their students, parents would be involved in every decision they make,&#8221; Ryan said.

In another shot in the arm for the Trump campaign, a <a href="https://nhjournal.com/poll-shocker-trump-leads-harris-in-new-hampshire/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">new poll</a> shows former President Donald Trump leading Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris in New Hampshire.
New Hampshire has voted for the Democratic presidential nominee in seven of the last presidential elections, albeit closely. The sole exception came in 2000 when the GOP’s George W. Bush narrowly defeated then-Vice President Al Gore. But a New Hampshire Journal/Praecones Analytica poll taken between October 24-26 found Trump leading Harris 50.2% to 49.8%.

She’s on defense and knows President Trump is on the path to victory,” Trump national campaign spokesperson Karoline Leavitt, who hails from New Hampshire, declared. “To my fellow Granite Staters who want to keep our beautiful state safe, business-friendly, and free — get out and vote for President Trump. Last week, an <a href="https://emersoncollegepolling.com/october-2024-new-hampshire-poll-harris-50-trump-47/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Emerson College poll</a> found Harris leading Trump 50%-47%. In 2020, President Joe Biden won the state by seven points over Trump. In 2016, Trump won a whopping victory in the New Hampshire primary, garnering more than 35% of the vote in a field of eight viable candidates. In 2024, Trump became the first non-incumbent Republican candidate ever to win the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary in the same year.
For roughly 130 years, between 1860 and 1990, New Hampshire was a reliably conservative state; only Democrats Woodrow Wilson (1912, 1916), Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1936,1940, 1944), and Lyndon Johnson (1964) were able to win in the state. But the last 32 years have seen Democrats dominate the presidential election in the state; a Trump victory might signal a turn back to the conservative views the state had hitherto held.
Although New Hampshire has only four Electoral College votes, those might prove significant if the 2024 election becomes a narrowly contested race, and the state voting for Trump may portend a resurgence of conservatism in the solidly Democratic Northeastern states (Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut).

Here He Comes: Poll Shows Trump Now Leading In New Hampshire

Another girl’s soccer team has refused to play against the team that’s allowed a biological male to play with them, despite a law in New Hampshire that says kids can only compete on a team that corresponds with their biological sex.
Last week, varsity members of the Catholic Bishop Brady High School in Concord refused to show up for its game against the public school Kearsage Regional High School in North Sutton after a judge ruled that the nearly 6-foot-tall trans-identifying goalie — who goes by the name of Maelle Jacques (Jr) — would be allowed to compete on the girl’s team, the <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13982591/Catholic-school-soccer-team-boycotts-match-transgender-goalie.html">Daily Mail</a> reported.
“Bishop Brady HS Varsity Girls Soccer Team STANDS UP for fairness in sports!&#8221; The <a href="https://portal.momsforliberty.org/news/bishop-brady-girls-soccer-pulls-out-of-game-against-team-with-trans-player/">Moms for Liberty group</a> of Hillsborough County wrote. “These brave athletes in Concord, NH boycotted a game with a male player on the opposing team, saying NO to unfair competition. Let’s support their courage and commitment to protecting women’s sports!”
Earlier this year, Jacques was prevented from playing on the girl’s team because the state restricts trans-identifying students from competing on the team that doesn&#8217;t align with their biological sex. 
However, in September federal judge Landya McCafferty — appointed by then-President Barack Obama — blocked the ban to allow Maelle to play on the girl’s team and alongside them in the locker room. The block remains in play until a final ruling is made, which hasn’t occurred yet, <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/sports/girls-soccer-team-boycotts-game-vs-transgender-goalie-federal-judge-let-play-trump-promises-ban">Fox News</a> noted.
Former collegiate swimmer and outspoken women’s sports activist <a href="https://x.com/Riley_Gaines_/status/1847549813165887794">Riley Gaines</a> praised the team for refusing to play.

Several weeks ago, several members of Hillsboro-Deering varsity team also refused to play against Kearsage’s team, as previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/girls-soccer-team-refuses-to-play-team-with-biological-male-following-similar-move-by-university">reported</a>.
“This isn’t about transgenderism,” Heather Thyng, the mother of a Hillsboro-Deering player who refused to play, told the outlet. “This is about biology for us and the increased physical risk when playing a full contact sport against the opposing sex.”
“We believe, my daughter included, that refusing to compete is the best way to push back on this issue, and we are hoping parents will be more willing to put themselves out there knowing they don’t have to be the first or the only family within our community to do so,” she aded.

Members of a New Hampshire high school girls&#8217; soccer team refused to play against a team whose star player is a biological male, following a similar move by some universities when it comes to teams with trans-identifying athletes.
On Tuesday, at least five of the girls on the Hillsboro-Deering High School Girls Varsity Soccer team skipped their game against Kearsarge Regional High School where the team’s star player is a male named Maelle Jacques, <a href="https://nhjournal.com/hillsboro-deering-girls-players-refusing-to-take-field-against-male-today/">NHJournal</a> reported.

“No one ever got near [Maelle,] so I guess they’ll never be in any danger if there’s enough girls to always have a weak team,” Betsy Harrington, another parent said. “If every game has a few girls refusing to play, we will never know the ability of the Kearsarge team. They have an advantage I hadn’t thought about. It’s that they get to always play a crippled team without all of their players.”
&#8220;We believe, my daughter included, that refusing to compete is the best way to push back on this issue, and we are hoping parents will be more willing to put themselves out there knowing they don’t have to be the first or the only family within our community to do so,” Thyng said.
&#8220;The coaches reassured me they told the girls there would be no negative repercussions for anyone who refuses to compete,&#8221; she added. &#8220;They said they understood the increased risk and would be paying attention to the aggressiveness of the game, and if anyone was getting hurt or play was too rough, they were prepared to end the game.&#8221;
Jacques is not only dominating in soccer but also in high school <a href="https://x.com/icons_women/status/1757146082331775460">track and field</a>, taking away the opportunity for a female to be named the girls’ high jump champion when the biological male won first place at the New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 2 state championship in February, the outlet noted.
On Monday, the women’s volleyball team at the University of Wyoming became the third school to refuse to play against San Jose State University because the California school has allowed a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/transgender">trans-identifying male</a> to play on the women’s team, as previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/university-womens-team-becomes-latest-to-refuse-to-play-against-trans-identifying-male">reported</a>.
In a statement posted on <a href="https://x.com/RealDanZak/status/1841229572886364624">X</a> from the Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball, the team stated, “After a lengthy discussion, the University of Wyoming will not play its scheduled conference match against San José State University in the UniWyo Sports Complex on Saturday, Oct. 5.”
“Per Mountain West Conference policy, the Conference will record the match as a forfeit and a loss for Wyoming,” the statement added. “The Cowgirls will host Fresno State on Thursday, Oct. 3 at 6:30 p.m. in the UniWyo Sports Complex.”
SJSU’s star volleyball player is a trans-identifying male who goes by the name of Blaire Fleming, OutKick’s David Hookstead previously <a href="https://x.com/dhookstead/status/1840089721877229584">reported</a>.

New Hampshire Governor <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/chris-sununu" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chris Sununu</a> was captured on video this week rushing in and administering the Heimlich maneuver to a man who began choking at a food eating contest.
Contestant Christian Moreno was one of several people competing at the Hampton Beach Seafood Festival contest on Sunday when he began choking on a lobster roll.
The Associated Press reported that participants had 10 minutes to eat as many lobster rolls — a hot dog bun stuffed with lobster, celery, and mayonnaise — as possible, and that Moreno was personally shooting to eat &#8220;at least 20,&#8221; according to comments he made before the contest began.
Moreno began chowing down on the lobster rolls when, after only consuming a couple of them, he began pounding on his chest and signaled that he needed help.
Sununu jumped in, positioned himself behind Moreno, placed his fist around Moreno&#8217;s gut, and began administering the Heimlich maneuver.
Sununu said, “It was crazy because it wasn’t so much the jumping in and doing it — I mean, that was wild in itself — but there was so much commotion.”

Moreno said that he had no idea that he was saved by the governor and thought it was a joke when someone first told him.
&#8220;My counter came up to me and, like, made a joke, and was like, ‘Oh, like, I bet nobody else can say that they’ve gotten the Heimlich from the governor before,'&#8221; he said. &#8220;And I looked at him, was just like, that was, that was the governor?”
He returned to the contest, downing nine lobster rolls in total, but did not win.

Sununu, who has at times been critical of the former president, made the remarks during a Sunday interview on CNN&#8217;s &#8220;State of the Union&#8221; when asked about the current state of the election.

Swing State Governor’s Advice For Trump: Stick To Policy To Crush Kamala

New Hampshire&#8217;s Republican governor on Friday signed laws banning genital gender surgeries on minors and trans-identifying boys from competing in girls&#8217; sports.
Governor Chris Sununu (R) <a href="https://www.governor.nh.gov/news-and-media/governor-chris-sununu-signs-50-bills-law" target="_blank" rel="noopener">signed</a> a <a href="https://legiscan.com/NH/text/HB619/id/2999539" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bill</a> banning doctors from performing gender surgeries on children&#8217;s genitals — such as phalloplasty and vaginoplasty — and threatening disciplinary action if they refer children to other providers for these procedures.
“This bill focuses on protecting the health and safety of New Hampshire’s children and has earned bipartisan support,” Sununu said in a statement on the bill.
The bill does not address other gender surgeries minors sometimes get, such as a double mastectomy to remove the healthy breasts of a teen girl who identifies as male. It also does not address puberty blockers or cross-sex hormones, which are frequently prescribed to gender dysphoric children and come with a host of risks.
At least 25 states have passed legislation banning or restricting transgender medical interventions for minors. In Florida, Ohio, and Montana, the restrictions are held up in court.
Also on Friday, Sununu signed another <a href="https://legiscan.com/NH/text/HB1205/id/2868559" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bill</a> banning biological boys from competing on girls&#8217; athletic teams.
Both public and private schools from kindergarten through college must comply with the new sports restrictions.
Recently, critics have raised serious concerns about biological males playing alongside women and girls. Some female competitors have said they missed out on opportunities and scholarships because they lost competitions to trans-identifying males.
High school girls have been physically injured playing with trans-identifying males. Last year in North Carolina, a female high school volleyball player <a href="https://www.nationalreview.com/news/female-high-school-volleyball-athlete-suffers-serious-head-injury-after-transgender-player-throws-abnormally-fast-ball/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">suffered</a> severe trauma after a trans-identifying male player spiked a volleyball that hit her head.
Sununu signed a third bill that allows parents to opt their children out of public school lessons on “sexual orientation, gender, gender identity or gender expression.”
Curriculum content in public schools became a hot-button issue after the pandemic when frustrated parents realized their children were being exposed to controversial topics while suffering massive learning loss. Other states like Florida have <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/florida-clashes-with-college-board-over-gender-and-sexuality-material-in-ap-psychology-course">banned</a> public schools from teaching gender, sexuality, and racial topics to young students.
However, Sununu vetoed another bill that <a href="https://gencourt.state.nh.us/bill_status/legacy/bs2016/billText.aspx?sy=2024&amp;id=630&amp;txtFormat=html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">declared</a> it was not unlawful discrimination for businesses and the government to separate people by sex when it comes to bathrooms, sports, jails, and mental health facilities.
The governor said the issue with that bill was that &#8220;in some cases it seeks to solve problems that have not presented themselves in New Hampshire, and in doing so, invites unnecessary discord.&#8221;
The new laws were praised by Republicans, who pushed the bills.
“These bills are pragmatic and reasonable and I applaud the governor for signing them into law,” said state Representative Joe Sweeney, a Salem Republican, in a statement.

It’s hard to remember a time before high-profile trials were broadcast on live television, and while O.J.’s may be the most memorable, it was not the first. That honor belongs to Pamela Smart, a young professional at a New Hampshire high school who had an affair with a student who would go on to murder her husband.
Pamela Wojas grew up in Miami, Florida, but her family moved to Derry, New Hampshire, while she was in the eighth grade. When it was time to go to college, Pamela moved back to Florida and attended Florida State University, where she graduated with a degree in communications. In 1986, Pamela met Greggory Smart during Christmas break while home in New Hampshire, and the two became inseparable. They officially began dating in February 1987, and Gregg eventually moved to Tallahassee to be with Pamela while she finished college.
The two were married in 1989 – Pamela was 21 and Gregg was 23 – and moved back to New Hampshire after Pamela graduated. Gregg began selling insurance at his father’s company, and Pamela took a job as a media coordinator at Winnacunnet High School in Hampton, New Hampshire.
On May 1, 1990, a week before their one-year wedding anniversary, Pamela arrived home around 10:00 p.m. to find the porch light hadn’t been turned on – something Gregg always did so she wouldn’t have to walk to the condo in the dark. It was a Tuesday evening, and when Pamela opened the front door she saw Gregg laying face down on the floor leading into the dining area. She immediately ran from the home and began screaming and knocking on neighbors’ doors, saying her husband was hurt and lying on the floor.
Neighbors called 911, and soon police were at the scene. They realized Gregg was dead and found the house had been ransacked, yet Gregg still had his wallet and wedding ring. Police also found the back door open and the bulkhead doors that led to the basement unlocked. There was no sign of forced entry, yet the crime scene had the appearance of a burglary gone wrong.
Police also wondered why anyone would risk a burglary on a weeknight, when people would be home and awake.
The case received local media attention, and Gregg’s funeral was televised, with Pamela appearing distraught and relying on her friends and family.
Police looking into the murder initially believed Gregg may have been gambling and heavily in debt, which could have resulted in his murder. Pamela, however, called local reporter Bill Spencer to say Gregg didn’t have a gambling problem, and agreed to do an interview with him. During that interview, Spencer said in the documentary “Pamela Smart: An American Murder Mystery,” that while filming the segment, Pamela suggested showing the top of the couple’s wedding cake, which he thought odd. Pamela was dressed up with her makeup done perfectly, and making suggestions to the film crew about how to improve the segment. She didn’t cry, and Spencer found it strange that she didn’t ask for help solving the murder, as victims usually did.

Police were stumped about who could have wanted Gregg dead, but on May 14, they received a call saying Pamela planned the murder. The caller worked with a teenager named Cecelia Pierce, who attended Winnacunnet High School and interned for Pamela. The caller said Cecelia, 15, had been talking about how Pamela planned the murder.
Police questioned Cecelia, who claimed to know nothing about the murder. During that initial interview, Cecelia did say she had stayed at the Smart home one week before the murder. This detail interested police, since Pamela had provided a list of everyone who had stayed at the home for the month prior to the murder – and didn’t include Cecelia. Pamela did, however, make sure to emphasize that a water salesman had come to the house prior to Gregg’s murder.
Police again were left with little to go on, until six weeks after the murder, when Vance Lattime walked into the police station and handed over a .38 caliber pistol he believed was the murder weapon. Vance told police that his son’s friend had suggested the gun was used in the murder. At first, Vance said he didn’t believe the teen, but he checked the gun in question and realized it had been cleaned – which isn’t how he had stored it previously. Worried, he turned the gun over to investigators.
Ralph Welch, the friend of Vance’s son, was brought in for questioning and said his friend Billy Flynn had been bragging about the murder. Welch said that Flynn had pulled the trigger while his other friend, Patrick “Pete” Randall, held Gregg’s head.
Welch also provided a connection to the boys and Pamela Smart – Flynn, Vance’s son J.R. Lattime Jr., and Cecelia were all part of the high school’s Project Self-Esteem, where Pamela was a mentor. When asked why Pamela would want her husband of less than a year dead, Welch said that she wanted the life insurance on him and that he loved the dog more than her.
Flynn, Randall, and Lattime Jr. were all arrested, but because they are all juveniles, their names weren’t released to the media.
Pamela desperately tried to learn the names of the teens arrested for her husband’s murder, and learned the truth when she called Flynn’s house and spoke to his mother. Spencer, the local reporter, went to Pamela’s house after the arrests to get her response, but she barely opened the door and said she was “devastated” about the arrests. Spencer also found this odd, wondering why she would be “devastated” when the people who had murdered her husband had just been caught.
Following the arrests, police again questioned Cecelia, Pamela’s intern, about what she knew regarding the alleged murder plot. Cecelia, whose mother was present during the questioning, continued to say she didn’t know anything, but after leaving the police station, she learned on the news that the police were considering arresting another student. Believing she would be arrested, Cecelia returned to the police station the next day to say that Pamela told her that she loved Flynn and that Cecelia had walked in on the two having sex. Cecelia also said Pamela was “front and center” in the plot to kill Greg, according to recordings of her police interviews.
Cecelia agreed to wear a wire and talk to Pamela, since Pamela wouldn’t speak over the phone because she believed it was being tapped. Cecelia went to Pamela’s office and the two spoke about the crime, with Pamela suggesting Cecelia lie to police so that the boys and Pamela wouldn’t spend the rest of their lives in prison. She also suggested Cecelia would go to prison as well.
Pamela, in the “American Murder Mystery” documentary series, said that she kept hearing about developments in the case from Cecelia, and she was lying about knowing more about the murders and trying to get information from Cecelia during the recorded conversation.
After the conversation with Cecelia, police arrested Pamela at the high school and charged her for her role in the murder of her husband.
Meanwhile, the teens charged with the actual killing refused to speak to police – until the court agreed to try them as adults. No longer facing a few years in juvenile detention, but life in prison or even the death penalty, the boys started talking.

Flynn said Pamela planned the murder, and the other boys back up his story. The teens were all given plea deals in exchange for testifying against Pamela, in a trial that would become America’s first nationally broadcast trial.
Pamela’s defense attorney tried to get the trial moved from Derry, New Hampshire, arguing that the jury pool was tainted by local media coverage of the crime. The judge denied the attempt.
The prosecution argued that Pamela didn’t just want to divorce Gregg because her affair with a 15-year-old would be exposed, damaging her reputation. She also collected on three life insurance policies for Gregg, totaling about $140,000.
On the stand, J.R., one of the teens involved in Gregg’s killing, said Pamela had told them not to use a knife because it would result in too much blood, which could get on her white furniture. He also said he believed Flynn would pay him $500 for helping with the murder – and that the money was supposed to come from Gregg’s life insurance payout.
The defense noted that J.R. and Flynn’s cells were right next to each other, suggesting they could have corroborated their stories prior to testifying.
Flynn teared up as he was on the stand, saying that the day after he and Pamela first had sex, she mentioned murdering her husband. He testified that Pamela said she couldn’t divorce Gregg because she would get nothing. He said that he believed Pamela would stop having sex with him if he didn’t murder Gregg, and that he was a virgin before her.
He also said that Pamela told him she would leave the bulkhead open and asked Flynn to put her dog in the basement during the murder so it wouldn’t be traumatized. He said that on the night of the murder, the boys entered the home through the unlocked door, ransacked the house to make it look like a burglary, and then waited until Gregg came home to kill him.

Pamela took the stand in her own defense, denying the boys’ allegations and saying she was susceptible to the affair with the teenage boy because Gregg had recently confessed he had cheated on her. She said she broke off the affair with Flynn because she loved Gregg and wanted to make the marriage work, and suggested Flynn and his friends killed Gregg out of jealousy and revenge. She never cried on the stand.
The jury was not sequestered during the trial, and Pamela’s defense said that newspapers were found in the jury room, suggesting their conviction could have been tainted.
The jury found Pamela Smart guilty on all counts, and she was sentenced to life in prison without parole. The judge denied the defense’s request for a new trial based on jury bias, and Pamela exhausted all of her legal appeals.
While Flynn and the other boys who committed the actual murder have all been released from prison, Pamela remains behind bars. She’s also requested that her sentence be reduced, but New Hampshire’s Executive Council denied her request and the state Supreme Court <a href="https://apnews.com/article/pamela-smart-teenage-lover-husband-killed-sentence-3f078128d8cb216ee1f4dcd8634eeac2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dismissed</a> her petition.
More than 34 years after the murder of her husband, Pamela <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/pamela-smart-finally-sort-of-takes-responsibility-for-husbands-murder-34-years-later" target="_blank" rel="noopener">acknowledged</a> her own responsibility in Gregg’s murder, but didn’t admit to plotting his death and never mentioned his name. As recently as 2018, in the “American Murder Mystery” documentary, Smart denied any involvement in her husband’s death.
