To be true to yourself and stand firm on your values takes courage. I would argue that this is especially true if your values are more based in nature — and even more so the case in the world of Hollywood.
When actors and actresses rise through the ranks of Hollywood, they often conform to the woke social and political image that Hollywood has not only deemed worthy but also silently required of celebrity status. Typically, if an actor’s beliefs aren’t aligned with Hollywood’s, they’ll either be cast out of that world or not even get a starting chance to climb the ranks. But a new actor rising to stardom is defying that preset narrative. Gabriel Basso upleveled to celebrity status after starring in the hit Netflix show “The Night Agent,” and during the 2024 election, he proved he’s not going to be a carbon copy of every other celebrity in the industry.

Basso played JD Vance in the 2020 film “Hillbilly Elegy,” based on the book Vance wrote about his upbringing in rural Appalachia. The film was nominated for two Oscars, but this was before Vance ran as vice president. When Trump announced Vance as his running mate, everyone in Hollywood expected Basso to denounce having played Vance — but he didn’t. In fact, he <a href="https://ew.com/gabriel-basso-says-it-was-weird-to-play-cool-dude-jd-vance-8778261" target="_blank" rel="noopener">called</a> him a “cool dude” in <a href="https://variety.com/2025/tv/news/gabriel-basso-night-agent-season-2-jd-vance-quitting-acting-1236277805/">an interview</a> with Variety after the second season of “The Night Agent” was released. Variety <a href="https://www.instagram.com/variety/p/DFGX53lvVzg/?hl=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> on Instagram that in their feature, “Basso opens up about starring in ‘The Night Agent,’ why he&#8217;s ‘not really a political person’ and playing JD Vance in 2020&#8217;s ‘Hillbilly Elegy.’”
Now, anytime someone says they are not political or don’t care to delve into politics, you can expect a large swath of people to swarm. Sure enough, the comments on Variety’s post proved as much, with some claiming privilege to be the key indicator as to why Basso doesn’t want to discuss politics. But connecting Basso to privilege is incredibly ironic because, as he makes quite clear in all his interviews, he intentionally avoids a privileged lifestyle. Variety writes of Basso:
<blockquote>There’s something fundamentally paleo about Basso, from his out-of-another-era firm handshake to his not carrying a cellphone. (His publicist and I text one another to triangulate his location as he arrives.) “I’m a medieval peasant,” he says. “I reject what I see in society. If a guy was to come into my village and peddle these black mirrors that everyone stares into all day, I’m trying to get this guy out of my village.”</blockquote>
Variety paints Basso as a very different kind of guy, honing in on what they seem to view as out-of-fashion characteristics. The interview reads as though a firm handshake is of a past time and maintaining eye contact is bizarrely uncommon. But these are just basic manners — a few of the exact ones my dad taught me growing up — yet Variety repeatedly mentions Basso’s eye contact and makes him seem like he’s some kind of anomaly.

What is anomalous is Basso’s commentary; he’s saying what no other actor is saying. Take, for example, the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ubf19RcB8yw" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interview</a> he did with Good Morning America earlier this year. In it, Lara Spencer praised “The Night Agent” as an amazing, addictive show, drawing in staggering numbers of viewers. 
Then, she asked Basso, “What do you think it is about your character, Peter, and the premise of the show that has caught on like this?” 
And Basso responded, “An inherent distrust for government.” 
An audible gasp ripped through the studio. That’s certainly not a statement you hear out of Hollywood, but it’s definitely a statement we all can relate to. With answers like that, he maintains a public-facing apolitical presence. While I don’t actually think he is apolitical, I do know he despises when actors talk as though they are experts in the political field, which he has made clear in other interviews. When Jamie Laing of Great Company <a href="https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/great-company-with-jamie-laing/id1735702250" target="_blank" rel="noopener">asked</a> Basso about his fame, he said:
<blockquote>I don’t believe that actors should be famous. We’re saying words that we’re told to say, we’re told how to say them, we’re told where to stand, and then we’re telling people how to vote? You should be quiet, you should do your job, you should be a jester, entertain people, then shut the f*** up. You know, we’re the court jesters. We’re there to perform a job, to entertain, and then all the sudden the jester, because he’s in the court room starts to be like, ‘I might want to go sit on the throne.’</blockquote>
He acknowledges the role of an actor and follows that up by acknowledging what evolves with celebrity status: The court jesters suddenly have the power of a king, and that shouldn’t be the case. He’s kept this same energy going on social media, like when he called out Instagram on his story for offering “overpaid actors” ways to “farm” their “audience for money” to then “morally lecture them about donating to causes that you are told to care about.” Then, he told people to buy seeds, chickens, or absolutely anything else. Last week, he deleted his Instagram entirely, a move he made in the middle of the most fame he’s ever experienced in his life.

When he went on <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@fallontonight/video/7460168448124095790?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Late Night</a>, he couldn’t have seemed less unimpressed by the fact he was sitting in the chair next to Jimmy Fallon. Fallon asked him about doing his own stunts, giving Basso a perfect opportunity to talk openly about his talents. (Let’s be real: It’s objectively cool he doesn’t have a stunt double.) Instead, Basso turned the answer to be about the audience, saying, “I enjoy acting. I don’t like lying. There’s just a difference. And for the sake of audience immersion, for the sake of believability, they like Peter, to watch him take hits, is important.” It’s a simple premise, but it caught Fallon totally off guard. That’s obviously not the kind of answer he’s used to getting from the seat reserved for actors who normally take every opportunity to boast about themselves. But that’s clearly not what Basso’s about. Much of the art of acting is being able to pretend and to deceive, and Basso likes acting, but he doesn’t want to lie if he doesn’t have to. It’s such a refreshing take.
Even though “The Night Agent” soared to number one on Netflix, Basso still thinks it’s important to have a day job. He shared with the hosts of <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05XkWKJKoVw" target="_blank" rel="noopener">This Morning</a> that he has his DSWA walling license (as in, drystack walls) because he thinks “actors are insulated from reality in a lot of ways” — and he is intentionally choosing to actively engage in reality when we all know he really doesn’t have to. He’s been an actor since childhood, so he’s going out of his way to get these side jobs as his fame is increasing. He told This Morning, “There is something that I think is wrong in today’s day and age where I can retire at 30 years old. I don’t think I should be able to. I think that it’s my responsibility to work, as a man. You know, you get a trade, you become self-sufficient, and it feels wrong to go through life with people getting me water. It feels wrong. I’ll do that when I’m old and can’t get up from the couch.” Again, it’s just refreshing to see an actor who believes that as an actor, his place in society is to act — nothing more. That is why he sees the value in serving his community in other ways, not the value in just being served.
Basso is one of the exceptionally few actors whose mind has broken out of the Hollywood matrix, or perhaps it was never drawn into it in the first place. He will, of course, get pushback from people who want the jesters to entertain and tell us peasants what we should believe. But plenty of people are picking up on it and <a href="https://x.com/friedman_yitz/status/1891935051761303894" target="_blank" rel="noopener">appreciating</a> what Basso is doing — me being one. Americans at large are loving his takes, and I would love to see more of this same behavior from other actors. He appreciates the art of acting, but he isn’t obsessed with the popularity that comes with success. That’s precisely why I hope he has 10 times more success in the future and can serve as a lesson to Hollywood to bring more people like him into the industry.

There are reports that actress Meryl Streep is one of the names being floated to portray the character of Aslan in Netflix’s adaptation of the classic “Chronicles of Narnia” series.
“Barbie” director Greta Gerwig has already been announced as both writer and director for the project. The streaming service announced in 2018 that they had acquired the rights to all seven books of the series. They are reportedly beginning with the first in the C.S. Lewis series, “The Magician’s Nephew.”
In the novels, Aslan is a talking lion who serves as Narnia’s guardian and a guide for the human children. The character is a male and is considered an allegory for Jesus Christ.
Deadline <a href="https://deadline.com/2025/04/meryl-streep-aslan-greta-gerwig-netflix-narnia-movie-1236358278/">confirmed</a> with their sources that the Oscar-winning actress was a contender to take on the role in the Netflix update. This led to a lot of strong reactions online.
“They’re destroying Narnia on purpose,” one person observed.
Another agreed, <a href="https://x.com/1000HolyPlaces/status/1907863824830738826">writing</a> on X, “Aslan is a representation of Christ — he’s male. Hollywood truly despises Christians.”
“No. Aslan is what the character is,” echoed another. “Gender swapping makes the character a different character. Stop demeaning women by treating them as men.”
“Aslan is not ‘generally portrayed’ as a male,” another reaction <a href="https://x.com/arch_aer/status/1907852887432085968">noted</a>. “He is a male.”
One person reacted by saying,“Very predictable Hollywood behavior.”
Another echoed that sentiment, writing, “Hollywood&#8217;s insistence on endless narrative/cultural subversion is simple yet baffling self-destruction.”
Someone else predicted that the “Narnia” films would flop as hard as Disney’s recent disaster, “Snow White.”
“Snow White wasn&#8217;t a big enough loss. The entertainment industry wants to lose bigger by offending the only people who might have been really excited about this production,” another reaction <a href="https://x.com/NMTimMcGrew/status/1907925526091841921">said</a>.
The Daily Wire’s Editor Emeritus Ben Shapiro also gave his <a href="https://x.com/benshapiro/status/1907920976735773089">take</a>, expressing his disdain with a single word, “Noooooooooope.”
Deadline previously reported that recording artist Charli XCX was in talks for the role of the white witch and Daniel Craig was also in talks to be involved. They noted that shooting for the first “Narnia” film from Netflix is slated to begin later this year.

According to reports, Brad Pitt is in for the “Once Upon a Time In Hollywood” sequel heading to Netflix.
David Fincher is rumored to be directing the project, which was written by Quentin Tarantino, according to <a href="https://theplaylist.net/david-fincher-to-direct-brad-pitt-in-once-upon-a-time-in-hollywood-sequel-written-by-quentin-tarantino-exclusive-20250401/">The Playlist</a>. Pitt will be reprising his role as Cliff Booth in the as-yet-unnamed follow-up to the 2019 comedy-drama. The actor took home a Best Supporting Actor award for the role that year.
Fincher and Pitt have worked together on some major projects in the past, including “Seven” (1995), “Fight Club” (1999), and “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” (2008).
The outlet noted that Tarantino negotiated a deal that turned over ownership of the film copyright from Sony Pictures to him after a set number of years. This announcement has led to speculation that this has since transpired as the sequel is now associated with Fincher’s first-look deal with Netflix.
Last year, Tarantino abandoned what was said to be his tenth and final film, which was called “The Movie Critic.” As The Hollywood Reporter <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-features/quentin-tarantino-movie-critic-what-happened-1235879479/">noted</a> at the time, multiple rewrites and changes made the story of a writer working for a fictional porn magazine in the late 1970s into something that seemed like a “Once Upon A Time in Hollywood” follow-up. Brad Pitt was attached to star, though the project never took off.
“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” premiered at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. It grossed more than $392 million worldwide and received critical acclaim. 
The film follows fading TV actor Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his loyal stunt double, Cliff Booth (Pitt), as they navigate the changing Hollywood landscape of 1969, which includes tangling with real-life figures like Sharon Tate and the Manson Family. The film culminates in a violent, revisionist climax where Rick and Cliff interrupt the Manson cult’s planned attack, altering the real tragedy forever.
Tarantino, now 62, had previously vowed to retire by age 60.
“I like the idea of giving it my all for 30 years and then saying, ‘OK, that’s enough.’ And I don’t like working to diminishing returns. And I mean, now is a good time because I mean, what even is a motion picture anyway anymore? Is it just something that they show on Apple? That would be diminishing returns,” he <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/director-quentin-tarantino-reveals-one-thing-he-wont-do-in-movies-thats-a-bridge-i-cant-cross">told</a> Deadline in May 2023.
“I mean, and I’m not picking on anybody, but apparently for Netflix, Ryan Reynolds has made $50 million on this movie and $50 million on that movie and $50 million on the next movie for them,&#8221; Tarantino continued. &#8220;I don’t know what any of those movies are. I’ve never seen them. Have you?”

Hollywood director Carl Rinsch was indicted on fraud and money laundering charges and accused of defrauding Netflix out of millions of dollars for a science-fiction series he never completed.
The director of the 2013 movie “47 Ronin” was arrested on Tuesday in West Hollywood and accused of embezzling $11 million dollars from the streaming giant, the <a href="https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/movies/story/2025-03-19/director-arrested-carl-erik-rinsch-netflix-fraud-money-laundering">Los Angeles Times</a> reported. He later appeared in court, but was not yet asked to enter a plea. 
He was indicted on two counts of money laundering, one count of wire fraud, and four counts of engaging in monetary transactions related to illegal activity, the Times noted.
According to the indictment, Rinsch used the money from Neftlix to make “extremely risky investments,” to pay for stays at the Four Seasons, and for other lavish purchases, crypto currency, and to hire lawyers to sue Netflix, instead of on the creation of the new science fiction series initially called “White Horse,” but later changed to “Conquest,” <a href="https://variety.com/2025/tv/news/carl-rinsch-indicted-netflix-white-horse-conquest-fraud-1236341650/">Variety</a> reported.
“Carl Rinsch allegedly stole more than $11 million from a prominent streaming platform to finance lavish purchases and personal investments instead of completing a promised television series,” FBI Assistant Director Leslie Backschies said in a statement.
The show was reportedly to be about a group of super intelligent clones “banished to a walled area in a Brazilian city, where they began developing advanced technology and came into conflict with humans and each other,&#8221; the report noted.
Rinsch and Netflix reportedly entered the deal for the series “in or about 2018,” per the indictment. Netflix then paid “approximately $44 million” to Rinsch’s production company for the show’s production between 2018 and 2019.

The director later requested an additional $11 million to finish the project and reportedly “quickly transferred” most of the funds from the Rinsch Co. account to his brokerage account, according to the indictment.
The director proceeded to lose more than half of that money in less than two months via risky investments in the stock market, the indictment added. At the same time, Rinsch was reportedly telling the streaming giant that the show was “awesome and moving forward really well,” per the indictment.
The funds were reportedly used to not only buy five Rolls-Royces and a Ferrari, costing a little over $2.4 million, but also things like clothing, watches, luxury bedding, and more, per the Times.
“The FBI will continue to reel in any individual who seeks to defraud businesses,” Backschies said.
If convicted, the filmmaker could face decades behind bars.

Director Indicted On Money Laundering Charges For Allegedly Defrauding Netflix Out Of Millions

Adam Sandler got everyone’s attention when he dropped the official trailer for “Happy Gilmore 2” nearly 30 years since the original movie hit the big screen.
In a viral post on Tuesday on <a href="https://x.com/AdamSandler/status/1901966979264852389">X</a>, the 58-year-old actor wrote, “Hope you all have fun and thanks for all the great times.”
His post included a one-minute-plus clip giving fans a sneak peak at what they could expect when the sequel hits Netflix July 25, when he reprises the role of the unlikely golfer Happy Gilmore.
In the trailer, we see his character clearly hesitant about facing off against a handful of PGA greats, saying he “hasn’t swung a club in years.” However, he finally decides to find a “new happy place” and head back to the golf course. And, as expected, all kinds of chaos is about to happen.

Fans have been waiting a long time for a sequel to Sandler’s hilarious 1996 golf comedy, in which he played a hockey player turned golfer to save his grandmother’s home.
Several original movie stars are returning for the sequel, including Christopher McDonald as rival golfer Shooter McGavin, and Julie Bowen, who plays Gilmore’s love interest.
The news comes after Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce dropped a teaser trailer in December in which he made a brief appearance in Sandler’s highly-anticipated “Happy Gilmore 2.”
In the clip Kelce posted to <a href="https://www.instagram.com/reel/DEP410wIt46/?igsh=NjZiM2M3MzIxNA%3D%3D">Instagram</a>, the Chiefs star told Sandler’s character in the trailer, “It’s great to see you back, Mr. Gilmore!”
He captioned the post, “It’s great to see you back in 2025, Mr. Gilmore! Wishing everyone a HAPPY New Year with HAPPY GILMORE 2, coming to @netflix in the new year.”
Kelce’s involvement in the film comes after the Chiefs tight end made it clear on a past episode of his &#8220;New Heights&#8221; podcast that he was a &#8220;Happy Gilmore&#8221; fan, and if there were a sequel in the works, he <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ae1J82fM23Q">would love to be part of it</a>.
Sandler later appeared on the Kelce brothers’ podcast and hinted at the role the Chiefs star player would have in the movie.
“Travis, we’re gonna have fun because the scene you’re doing is with so many great golfers it’s going to be amazing. You’re going to be funny as hell,” the famed actor said, <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/GMA/Culture/adam-sandler-travis-kelce-talk-athletes-happy-gilmore/story?id=113221086">ABC News</a> noted.

Adam Sandler’s ‘Happy Gilmore 2’ Drops First Trailer Nearly 30 Years After Original

Meghan Markle is having a rough week.
The actress turned royal turned tony Montecito resident debuted her new lifestyle show, With Love, Meghan, on Netflix last Tuesday. By Wednesday afternoon, every corner of the internet had excoriated her for the effort.
And when it comes to effort, Meghan puts forth a lot.
Not unlike Anne Hathaway or Sally Field circa the 1985 Oscars shouting, “You like me! You really, really like me!” Meghan is a classic try-hard. I don’t say this disparagingly; as someone who regularly brings home-baked treats to professional settings, I respect her domestic hustle. And however disparate our points of view on politics or publicity stunts, I also tip a hat to anyone willing to enter the public arena and welcome scrutiny, a subject with which the duchess is well-acquainted.
Her new show is the latest in a string of attempts at reinvention that Meg and her husband Prince Harry have made since stepping down from their royal duties in January 2020. The much lambasted lifestyle show is preceded by three other documentary projects, all part of their reported $100 million five-year deal with Netflix, and Meghan’s short-lived Archetypes podcast, which rests under the banner of a reported $20 million deal with Spotify. Each project sparked more irritation than the last, but Meg’s new hospitality and cooking show takes the critical cake.
While Meghan and Harry have long held sympathies from legacy media and celebrity circles alike, even mainstream and left-leaning publications including Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, ScreenRant, Vulture, and The Cut have no soft spot for their latest production.
Some outlets slam Meghan for her unrelatability and luxurious lifestyle, while others chastise her for not allowing enough access into the rarified world of a real-life American princess. Reviewing the collected criticism of this attempt at a lighthearted escape of a television show feels a little like getting Lindsay Lohan’s emotional whiplash upon her first high school cafeteria foray into the world of The Plastics in Mean Girls. One almost expects the sporadically featured cameraman, who, when asked if he’d like to share a glass of beer left over from a recipe for chicken brine, to respond to Meghan by saying, “So, you agree. You think you’re really pretty.”
While certain criticisms are warranted, they do lack an essentially nuanced understanding of both the show’s genre and its titular star.

Superfans hoping the show — whose trailer billed it as a straightforward lifestyle series — would spill tea on the royal family drama were left sorely disappointed. Just minutes into the first episode, Meghan announces that the sun-drenched kitchen in which she flits about is not inside of her actual house, and she goes on to refer to it as the “set” throughout the rest of the series. The most personal detail she shares about her royal husband is that he sometimes comes strolling into the kitchen when he smells that she’s frying bacon.
Even the most tuned-in Royal-watchers stopped speculating on the family drama about 20 minutes into the famed Oprah tell-all when most of it boiled down to salacious headlines, hearsay, and quite a bit of melodrama — all well-honed by an actress who earned her previous paychecks on a soapy legal drama series. All that said, did critics hoping for a fly-on-the-wall perspective of the royals’ new Montecito digs think that one of the most scrutinized families in the world would again open wide the doors of their life for a Bravo style reality show? They tried that before and it only served to plummet their social stock, most aptly and satirically evidenced by Southpark’s “World Wide Privacy Tour” episode in which Harry and Meg’s animated avatars travel the globe’s media outlets demanding that people leave them alone.
The more frequent complaint of the show and its host is the unrelenting lack of self-awareness: the in-your-face luxury of the one-percent that Meghan treats like it’s accessible to anyone with a pot to boil water in. Among other accouterments of said ridiculousness cited by critics is a backyard honey farm from which a quirky on-staff beekeeper extricates wax for Meghan’s homemade non-toxic candles. Her first guest is Daniel Martin, her longtime makeup artist, with whom she chuckles about how she called his talent agency herself (gasp!) to inquire for her first booking since she didn’t even have a publicist at the time. (How pedestrian!) From celebrity guest Mindy Kaling feigning awe at the fact that Meghan makes her own balloon arches for children’s parties, rather than farm out the chore to a hired hand (the ingenuity!) to Meghan sprinkling edible flowers atop literally everything (and you can too, once her merch website launches!) the show is ripe with out-of-touch excess.
To which, this author says: so what?
One has to wonder if critics claiming offense at Meghan’s unrelatable lifestyle have ever actually watched a lifestyle show; the genre is not supposed to be relatable. At most, it’s aspirational; at minimum, it’s a distraction. With Love, Meghan is not something you settle down to view with a critical eye. It’s something you put on the television while you’re folding heaping baskets of laundry or washing a sink full of dishes. Sure, the patio in the sweet little home my husband and I share doesn’t have enough space for a beehive, nor does our guest room provide occupancy for its quirky keeper, but darn if I wasn’t inspired to see if our local grocery store carries mãnuka honey. 
Other critics come after Meghan for positioning herself — by virtue of hosting this show — as something of an authority on hospitality and cooking. While it’s clear that she genuinely loves both, one does begin to question what qualifies her as the show’s star when she painstakingly arranges (yet another) crudité platter.
From the obsessively perfect and famously difficult Martha Stewart, to the unabashedly entitled and comically out-of-touch Gwyneth Paltrow, to the unmatched Ina Garten, who personifies the comforting charm of “eat, drink, and be merry,” the greats of this space have already been established during its heyday. Everything else is copy. That’s why With Love, Meghan feels, admittedly, a bit misplaced: unaware of what it isn’t and hitting our airwaves about 10 years too late. In an era when anyone can access all-star recipes from the homecooks of Instagram — shared from modest kitchens across our country — it does make the notion of a duchess casually modeling how to create a harvest basket using produce from her own palatial garden feel more than a little tone-deaf. Then again, Hilaria Baldwin, the Boston-born-and-bred wife of actor Alec Baldwin, once hosted a cooking segment on The Today Show and proclaimed to forget the English word for “cucumber,” so immersed in her Spanish culture is she. If there’s anything we’ve learned from celebrities, it’s that proximity to power can create all manner of ego-driven delusions of grandeur.
So, while aspects of the show are inauthentic and silly, and it’s largely devoid of pace and purpose in the way that an eight-episode series that should have been four often are, I didn’t go into the viewing experience expecting anything other than a beautiful West Coast backdrop, a few outfit ideas (even Meghan’s harshest critics admit that her style is impeccable), and a handful of tips and tricks for putting together gifts for loved ones. For all the eye-rolling criticism that her show has garnered, I would bet money on the fact that women all over America are, at this very moment, decanting store-bought peanut butter pretzels into little labeled gift bags. It’s an adorable idea and I dare even the most cynical of snackers not to be touched when they find it on their bedside table along with lavender towels and a carafe of sun tea next time they visit a friend who has watched (or hate-watched) Meghan’s show.
Sure, the duchess’s swooning commentary on the beauty of the weather, dimpled focaccia dough, or an egg yolk is tiresome, as is her penchant for speaking in platitudes that belong on tea towels. She’s understandably guarded enough to appear performative, and the amateurish tips presented as sacrosanct should be taken less seriously, but I didn’t tune in expecting to find this era’s Martha, Gwyneth, or Ina. As a Royal-watching, Nancy Meyers aesthetic-obsessed, amateur home cook, and aspiring excellent hostess, I am exactly the woman for whom this show was made. I watched it for the same reason that I saw Barbie in theaters without expecting it to rival an adaptation of Pride &amp; Prejudice, or enjoy reading a novel with a Nantucket beach scene on the cover without comparing it to Dickens or Dostoevsky.
It’s just a bit of fun, and sometimes, that’s enough.
So, to the show’s harshest and high-minded critics, I offer an invitation: stop watching.
Or, at least find a hobby to keep you busy while you do, because With Love, Meghan has already been renewed for a second season.

Meghan Markle’s new lifestyle series “With Love, Meghan” has already been renewed for a second season, despite criticism and reviews that have panned the royal’s show as a disaster and pointless.
“Oh, how I love ASMR! If you’re loving Season 1, just wait until you see the fun we cooked up on Season 2!” the Duchess of Sussex captioned her post on Instagram —hich blocked people from commenting on the surprising news.
“Thanks for joining the party, and an endless thanks to the amazing team and crew who helped bring it all to life!” she added. “@netflix.”
The eight-episode series debuted on Netflix last week and by Friday, the duchess shared news it was coming back. In the first week, the series placed in the top 10 on the streaming site, <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/conormurray/2025/03/07/markles-with-love-meghan-renewed-for-another-season-despite-low-review-ranking/?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=socialflowForbesMainTwitter&amp;utm_source=ForbesMainTwitter">Forbes</a> noted.
“Meghan, Duchess of Sussex invites friends and famous guests to a beautiful California estate, where she shares cooking, gardening and hosting tips,” the series <a href="https://www.netflix.com/title/81770808">description</a> on Netflix reads.
The <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/03/07/entertainment/meghan-markles-netflix-show-with-love-meghan-renewed-for-season-2/?utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_campaign=nypost&amp;utm_medium=social">New York Post</a> reported that filming and production on the second season was complete, and it was set to drop this fall. 
It was this tidbit that seemed to upset critics, with many taking to social media to note that there was no support or outcry from fans for another season, but that the show had reportedly already completed filming for a second part.
“Honestly, this was an excellent PR strategy. Film the show. Break it into two parts and then make it seem like it was renewed for a second season because everyone loved it,” one person noted on X. &#8220;Good one, but we see right through the BS. With Love, Meghan is a flop.”
Another person added, pointing to a Deadline article, “The truth is out. With Love, Meghan was originally greenlit for two seasons. Nothing new here!”
The series has scored dismal reviews from both critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and, unsurprisingly, did particularly poorly in the United Kingdom.
A reviewer from The Guardian <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2025/mar/04/with-love-meghan-netfix-deal-harry-royals">called it</a> “pointless” and predicted it would be the Sussexes’ last television show after several Netflix flops. The outlet also said the series was bound to fail “unless the broader public suddenly develops a hankering for long-form television programmes about a woman filling children’s party bags with seeds and manuka honey.”
The Duchess of Sussex also <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/03/04/lifestyle/meghan-markle-mocked-by-netflix-viewers-for-her-basic-one-pan-pasta-dish-thats-not-food-thats-punishment/">got ridiculed</a> for an unconventional recipe for spaghetti, which she claimed she put in her children’s lunch boxes the next day.
“That’s not food – that’s punishment!” one person remarked.
“With so little water, the dish must be a gluey, sticky, starchy brick,” another person agreed.
“Her food looks very basic and a bit boring,” a third said.
Commenters on X were not impressed either.
“I just saw the 8 episodes, and they are worse than you can possibly imagine,” one <a href="https://x.com/paulamatanovich/status/1896776576244597226" target="_blank" rel="noopener">viewer</a> replied.

“Love Is Blind” contestant Sara Carton has gone viral for leaving her intended at the altar due to his stance on a variety of social issues, including Black Lives Matter, COVID vaccines, and religion.
The popular Netflix reality show features single contestants dating and getting engaged in isolated &#8220;pods&#8221; without seeing each other, testing whether an emotional connection can become more important than physical attraction before meeting face-to-face. 
Carton advanced a relationship with Ben Mezzenga during the current Season 8 and made it all the way to the altar before discovering they were incompatible. 
“I love you so much but I’ve always wanted a partner to be on the same wavelength. And so today I can’t,” Carton told Mezzenga at the altar.
“I know that the connection we have is so real and my heart is there. But we talked about a lot of the values I hold so close to my heart. Making this decision, my heart is telling me I can’t,” she added. 
Carton is a 28-year-old oncology nurse from Minneapolis, where George Floyd&#8217;s death sparked riots throughout the country in 2020. After leaving the nuptial ceremony, she told her mom and sister why she decided to break it off with Mezzenga at the last minute.
“I remember I asked him about Black Lives Matter and I’m no expert, but when I asked him about it, he was like ‘I guess I never really thought too much about it.’ That affected me. Especially in our own city, how could it not make you think about something?” she said. 
The “Love Is Blind” contestant went on, saying, “I asked him too what his church’s views are and he said he didn’t know. I watched a sermon online [from his church] about sexual identity and it was traditional. I told that to Ben and he doesn’t really have much to say about it. I want someone to think about that stuff.”
The clip has gone viral on social media, with users sharing mixed reviews on Carton’s reaction.
“This man just avoided a life of misery. Congrats,” one person wrote.
“Is there anything more annoying than a liberal white woman?” conservative commentator Tomi Lahren agreed.
“Sounds like she made the right decision for both,” another person agreed. “Marriage isn’t just about attraction. If you don’t share values, why even bother? Do you want the mother of your children to have an opposing world view (sic) to your own? Guess how the children will see the world, and you.”

Meghan Markle’s new Netflix series, “With Love, Meghan,&#8221; was just released on Tuesday, and it’s already being heaped with criticism from news outlets and viewers weighing in via social media. 
The series was marketed as a lifestyle show meant to highlight some of the Duchess of Sussex’s favorite tips for entertaining. The trailer promised a cast of guest appearances from Markle’s friends like Mindy Kaling and others. But from the get-go, fans were confused as to why the former working royal would choose such a saturated genre.

“All of Meghan Markle’s ‘recipes’ can be found on Pinterest,” another person <a href="https://x.com/MeghansMole/status/1896657704917381132">observed</a>, highlighting a photo of a rainbow fruit tray that looked identical to one a blogger had posted about previously. 
Viewers were also frustrated over how fake it all felt, especially since the show wasn’t filmed in her actual home. 
The Google Reviews so far are very low, with a current average rating of 2.4 out of 5. 
“Imagine if Martha Stewart and Gwyneth Paltrow had a love child who was raised by a committee of Instagram influencers—that’s essentially what we have here. Meghan Markle’s new lifestyle and cooking show on Netflix is a glossy, filtered, and utterly exhausting journey into the world of perfectly curated nothingness,” one reviewer wrote, adding that the “small, relatable moments” the show highlights “often feel as authentic as a Kardashian family dinner.”

Former working royal Meghan Markle has announced that she’s rebranding her lifestyle company before hard launching a single product.
The Duchess of Sussex shared the news via Instagram with a post revealing the new name just a few weeks before her Netflix series premieres. 
The brand launch started last March when Markle introduced the idea of “American Riviera Orchard,” which, as far as anyone could tell, sold some homemade preserves. There were photos that showed celebrities receiving samples from a limited batch, but nothing beyond that besides a website collecting email addresses – until now.
In the video launch of the newly branded “As Ever,” the former royal explains that she chose a name that made more sense. However, multiple outlets are <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/02/18/entertainment/meghan-markle-renames-lifestyle-brand-american-riviera-orchard-to-as-ever-after-trademark-woes/">reporting</a> that Markle could not get the name America Riviera Orchard trademarked, eventually leading to the shift.
And then things got even more complicated. Since the brand launch, the owner of the United States-based clothing brand &#8220;As Ever,&#8221; which he says has been in business since 2015, posted on social media about the newfound attention. He assured customers that he has no affiliation with the Duchess of Sussex.
Designer Mark Kolski wrote in a <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DGO6FWasDQ4/?hl=en">post</a> on Instagram: &#8220;I want to say thank you to all the old friends who know and love our small family brand As Ever, and also say hi to all those that have just become aware we exist.&#8221;
&#8220;In the last 36 hours there has been an outpouring of support and concern regarding recent events around our namesake brand. We are aware. We are not affiliated,&#8221; he added.
&#8220;It&#8217;s 2025. We are grateful to still be here making clothing in New York &amp; New Jersey,&#8221; the post said. &#8220;We are grateful for all the customers coast to coast and world wide that have supported our venture. We will continue As Ever.&#8221;
The Duchess of Sussex shared the news in an outdoor-based video posted to Instagram featuring a brief cameo from her husband, Prince Harry, who can be heard saying, &#8220;It&#8217;s recording,&#8221; before handing her a phone.

She then explained that the new website is meant to reflect her defunct lifestyle brand, The Tig.
&#8220;As Ever essentially means as it’s always been, and if you’ve followed me since 2014 with The Tig, you know I’ve always loved cooking and crafting and gardening — this is what I do,&#8221; Markle went on. &#8220;And I haven’t been able to share it with you in the same way for the past few years, but now I can, so as things are starting to trickle out there, I wanted you to hear it from me first.&#8221;
&#8220;Of course, there will be fruit preserves; I think we’re all clear at this point that jam is my jam. But there are so many more products that I just love, and now it&#8217;s time to share them with you. So I just can’t wait for you to see it. Thanks, guys!&#8221; she concluded.

Netflix has broken its silence on the controversy over “Emilia Pérez,” the streaming giant&#8217;s musical drama, which earned 13 Academy Award nominations.
While the film has been heaped in praise for months, things took a turn recently when old social media posts from trans-identifying actor Karla Sofía Gascón, who plays the main character, resurfaced and went viral. The posts put forth controversial takes on hot topics, including George Floyd, Muslims, and diversity at the Oscars.
Now Gascón has become persona non grata, with many in the film industry, including “Emilia Pérez” director Jacques Audiard, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/emilia-perez-director-disavows-films-star-says-controversial-tweets-are-inexcusable">disavowing him</a>. 
Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria gave her take on the situation during an interview on “The Town” podcast, echoing what many others have been saying and placing blame firmly on the film’s star rather than defending his actions.
“I think it’s really a bummer for the 100 incredibly talented people who made an amazing movie,” Bajaria said, per <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/netflix-emilia-perez-controversy-interview-1236136312/">Variety</a>. “And if you look at the nominations, and all of this awards love that it’s received, I think it’s such a bummer that it distracted from that.”
She continued, “It really has kind of taken the conversation in a different way [from] this incredible movie that Jacques Audiard — who is an incredible director — has made. It really is a bummer for a lot of the people, like [co-stars] Zoe [Saldaña] and Selena [Gomez]. And our awards team did an incredible campaign for that movie.”
The Netflix exec responded to a question about potentially vetting a star’s social media accounts by saying, “It’s not really common practice for people to vet social tweets that way … A lot of people are reevaluating that … I do think it is raising questions for a lot of people about reevaluating that process.”
Bajaria added, “I think you also have to [ask]: Are we going to actually look at the personal social media of tens of thousands of people, every single day around the world, [given the] amount of original film and TV and co-prods that we make and license? It raises a lot of questions about what that should look like.”
She said despite the backlash, it’s all been worth it. 
“If you ask me today, everything I know, we would still buy the movie today. That movie is incredible and it’s creative and it’s bold — that’s what you want, and it resonated with a lot of people this year,” Bajaria concluded.
Gascón has apologized multiple times but is still being chastised and has been uninvited from events to promote “Emilia Pérez” before the Oscars ceremony.
