Students at Michigan State University hoping to become the educators of the next generation are forced to take a race-centered course that follows &#8220;the guiding principles of the Black Lives Matter&#8221; movement and requires students to read from a book condemning &#8220;whiteness.&#8221;
Course materials obtained by the <a href="https://yaf.org/news/race-obsessed-course-forced-on-future-educators-at-michigan-state/">Young America&#8217;s Foundation</a> group on MSU&#8217;s campus and shared with The Daily Wire show that one class for future teachers pushes leftist theories on race. The introductory three-credit class, &#8220;<a href="https://reg.msu.edu/Courses/Search.aspx?CourseID=342088#Results">TE 101: Social Foundations of Justice and Equity in Education</a>,&#8221; is required for all Secondary Education majors at MSU and is typically taken before their junior year. TE 101&#8217;s course description states that it emphasizes &#8220;racial justice, equity, and social identity markers.&#8221;
The syllabus for TE 101 states that the class is &#8220;committed to the Guiding Principles of the Black Lives Matter Movement, Learning for Justice’s Social Justice Standards, and the principles of the Abolitionist Teaching Network.&#8221;
One Michigan State education major, who wished to remain anonymous, told The Daily Wire that 90-100% of the class is focused on race.
&#8220;This class is an indoctrination of modern racial ideology,&#8221; the student said.
Asked if sitting through hours of leftist ideology becomes discouraging, the student replied, &#8220;No, it actually makes me want to pursue this degree more. It makes me want to be able to teach children instead of these other people.&#8221;
&#8220;Because I feel like there is a lack of conservatives in education,&#8221; the student added. &#8220;We see how the other side has done with these students.&#8221;
The only book TE 101 students are required to read for the semester includes a section that condemns &#8220;whiteness&#8221; as a privilege that &#8220;will never allow true solidarity to take place.&#8221;
The <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Want-More-Than-Survive-Abolitionist/dp/0807069159">book</a>, &#8220;We Want to Do More Than Survive: Abolitionist Teaching and the Pursuit of Educational Freedom,&#8221; by Bettina Love, &#8220;argues that the US educational system is maintained by and profits from the suffering of children of color.&#8221; The author writes that for education reform to take place, leaders must &#8220;approach education with the imagination, determination, boldness, and urgency of an abolitionist.&#8221;
One excerpt from the book focuses on how &#8220;whiteness&#8221; cannot be included in the fight for education reform.

Whiteness is addicted to centering itself, addicted to attention, and making everyone feel guilty for working toward its elimination. Whiteness will never allow true solidarity to take place. Those who cling to their Whiteness cannot participate in abolitionist teaching because they are a distraction, are unproductive, and will undermine freedom at every step, sometimes in the name of social justice. Being an abolitionist means you are ready to lose something, you are ready to let go of your privilege, you are ready to be in solidarity with dark people by recognizing your Whiteness in dark spaces, recognizing how it can take up space if unchecked, using your Whiteness in White spaces to advocate for and with dark people. And you understand that your White privilege allows you to take risks that dark people cannot take in the fight for educational justice.”</blockquote>
Each of the three groups mentioned as being pivotal to the class has a history of advocating for radical leftist ideas. The course syllabus links to &#8220;<a href="https://www.dcareaeducators4socialjustice.org/black-lives-matter/13-guiding-principles">Guiding Principles</a>&#8221; of the BLM movement, which include radical leftist ideas on race and gender. Among the 13 BLM movement principles listed on the website for &#8220;D.C. Area Educators for Social Justice&#8221; are commitments to be &#8220;queer affirming&#8221; and &#8220;trans affirming.&#8221; The &#8220;Guiding Principle&#8221; under transgender affirmation vows to &#8220;dismantle cis-gender privilege and uplift Black trans folk, especially Black trans women who continue to be disproportionately impacted by trans-antagonistic violence.&#8221;

<a href="https://www.learningforjustice.org/about">Learning for Justice</a>, the second group listed on the syllabus, is part of the Southern Poverty Law Center, which aims to be &#8220;a catalyst for racial justice in the South and beyond, working in partnership with communities to dismantle white supremacy, strengthen intersectional movements and advance the human rights of all people.&#8221; The SPLC has been condemned for placing Christian and conservative organizations on its &#8220;Hate Map&#8221; that publicly tracks groups and individuals that it deems radical and hateful. Learning for Justice&#8217;s &#8220;<a href="https://www.learningforjustice.org/sites/default/files/2022-09/LFJ-Social-Justice-Standards-September-2022-09292022.pdf">Social Justice Standards</a>&#8221; seek to teach children as young as five years old about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).
The Abolitionist Teaching Network, another group that guides the MSU education class, encourages teachers to become activists.
&#8220;Abolitionist Teaching Network leverages teachers&#8217; and workers&#8217; power by offering resources for agitators and activists,&#8221; the group <a href="https://www.ewlhub.org/professional-development-resource-guide/abolitionist-teaching-network-">states</a>.
Another MSU education student who previously took TE 101 and spoke to The Daily Wire on condition of anonymity, said that the hyper-focus on race continues in courses beyond TE 101, especially in &#8220;<a href="https://reg.msu.edu/Courses/Search.aspx?CourseID=342088#Results">TE 102: Pedagogy and Politics of Justice and Equity in Education</a>.&#8221;
&#8220;I&#8217;ve had to write papers on different identities. You can choose race, gender, sexuality, income status. I think the goal is to have most students write about their whiteness,&#8221; the student said. &#8220;They teach that white people can&#8217;t see their identity. The core tenet of these classes feels like white people, especially white men, are the number one objection to what stands in the way of a better education system and a better society.&#8221;
The conservative student group, Young America&#8217;s Foundation, which first highlighted TE 101 at MSU, called the course&#8217;s content &#8220;divisive and discriminatory.&#8221;
&#8220;This kind of rhetoric only pushes Americans further apart, and is not only a waste of taxpayer money at a publicly funded university, but also a waste of students’ time,&#8221; Michigan State YAF added in a statement. &#8220;Do we really want our future educators teaching our children that an entire race is evil?&#8221;
Michigan State defended the class. A spokesperson for the university told The Daily Wire that the course &#8220;aligns with national teacher preparation standards, and its associated curriculum is reviewed through well-established academic governance processes at the department, college, and institutional level.&#8221; The spokesperson added that courses and curricula are approved by the department, which requires sign-off from the dean, and then approval by an independent curriculum committee.
Courses and curricula are also reviewed by the Office of Accreditation, Assessment, Curriculum, and Compliance and the University Curriculum Committee. After those reviews, the University Curriculum Committee votes for final approval.
&#8220;Michigan State University remains firmly committed to academic freedom, scholarly inquiry, and the preparation of educators who are well equipped to serve all students,&#8221; the MSU spokesperson added.
Since coming into office in January, President Donald Trump has signed executive orders seeking to crack down on DEI teachings at public universities. The Trump administration has <a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-dei-universities-investigated-f89dc9ec2a98897577ed0a6c446fae7b">launched</a> investigations into dozens of universities across the country over accusations that they pushed DEI programs on students and faculty, which led to racial discrimination.

Michigan State University officials apologized on Sunday after the school football stadium&#8217;s jumbotron displayed an image of Adolf Hitler during a pre-game quiz over the weekend.
&#8220;Antisemitism must be denounced,&#8221; Michigan State Athletic Director Alan Haller said in a statement <a href="https://apnews.com/article/michigan-state-hitler-23b8e62c44cf42c3caad30c908692632" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> by The Associated Press. &#8220;The image displayed prior to Saturday night&#8217;s game is not representative of who we are and the culture we embody. Nevertheless, we must own our failures and accept responsibility.&#8221;
An hour before kickoff between the Michigan State Spartans and the team&#8217;s in-state rival, the University of Michigan, an image of Hitler appeared on the stadium&#8217;s video board asking game attendants to name the birthplace of the German dictator and leader of the Nazi Party.
&#8220;The image was harmful to our communities, especially our Jewish community which is currently experiencing a rise in antisemitism, including acts of violence,&#8221; Haller&#8217;s statement said, reportedly adding he would reach out to student and local Jewish community groups.
Haller said the pre-game controversy led to the suspension of an &#8220;involved employee&#8221; while officials investigate the matter.
Michigan State spokesman Matt Larson said in a separate <a href="https://msu.edu/issues-statements/2023-10-21-msu-athletics-statement-videoboard" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a> that the school would discontinue using &#8220;the third-party source moving forward.&#8221;
&#8220;MSU is aware that inappropriate content by a third-party source was displayed on the videoboard prior to the start of tonight&#8217;s football game,&#8221; Michigan State athletic director Matt Larson said in a statement. &#8220;We are deeply sorry for the content that was displayed, as this is not representative of our institutional values.&#8221;
Pictures of the image began circulating across social media, with users criticizing the university for displaying the image after the Israel-Hamas war entered its third week over the weekend, leading to a rise in antisemitism from supporters of Hamas.

The image reportedly came from a YouTube page called The Quiz Channel, whose description page states has created weekly quiz and trivia videos for the last three years.
Floris van Pallandt, the creator of The Quiz Channel, <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/10/22/us/michigan-state-hitler-photo-football-game/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> CNN that the university used the channel&#8217;s content without his authorization and has since received a rise in negative feedback impacting its reputation, performance, and monetization.
&#8220;I was completely unaware of this and only learned content created by me was being used due to this occurrence,&#8221; van Pallandt wrote. &#8220;While I provide customised content packages for businesses, the utilisation of my publicly accessible YouTube content for stadium entertainment is highly questionable to say the least.&#8221;
&#8220;MSU&#8217;s subsequent statement appears to allude to a third-party source, which seems to suggest The Quiz Channel as that very source. If this is accurate, that is unacceptable to me, as it is unacceptable for The Quiz Channel to bear reputational, performance, or financial repercussions due to MSU&#8217;s unsolicited use of our content,&#8221; he wrote.
The Quiz Channel creator further defended the question about Hitler&#8217;s birthplace.
&#8220;It&#8217;s an absolutely normal trivia question, shown in an inappropriate setting,&#8221; Pallandt reportedly wrote on his YouTube page. &#8220;Ignoring the dark facets of history is by no means the answer, on the contrary.&#8221;
Michigan State reportedly streamed the YouTube channel, which included 40 questions ranging from historical figures to pop culture trivia.

Michigan State University officials on Monday delivered a notice of termination to the school&#8217;s head football coach Mel Tucker after a prominent rape survivor and activist recently <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/michigan-state-suspends-head-coach-after-rape-survivor-alleges-he-sexually-harrassed-her-during-phone-call-report" target="_blank" rel="noopener">accused</a> him of sexual harassment during a phone call.
Tucker, 51, who signed a $95 million decade-long contract extension less than two years ago, made headlines last week after allegations against him became public in a USA Today report. In that report, Brenda Tracy — a rape survivor who educates athletes about sexual violence — said the football coach sexually harassed her during a phone call on April 28, 2022.
After the report was published, Michigan State officials suspended Tucker without pay on September 10, pending the results of a Title IX investigation over allegations of sexual misconduct.
Michigan State athletic director Alan Haller released a <a href="https://twitter.com/chrissolari/status/1703858552924774730" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a> Monday afternoon announcing the university&#8217;s intent to terminate his contract.
&#8220;I, with the support of administration and board, have provided Mel Tucker with written notice of intent to terminate his contract for cause. This notification process is required as part of his existing contract,&#8221; Haller said in a university statement. &#8220;The notice provides Tucker with seven calendar days to respond and present reasons to me and the interim president as to why he should not be terminated for cause.
&#8220;This action does not conclude the ongoing Office for Civil Rights case; that rigorous process will continue.&#8221;
According to his contract, Michigan State may fire Tucker for cause if he &#8220;engages in any conduct which constitutes moral turpitude or which, in the University&#8217;s sole judgment, would tend to bring public disrespect, contempt or ridicule upon the university.&#8221;
Haller&#8217;s four-page letter sent to Tucker&#8217;s representatives on Monday <a href="https://www.detroitnews.com/story/sports/college/michigan-state-university/2023/09/18/msu-fires-mel-tucker/70889396007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reportedly</a> detailed the reasons behind the termination, saying, in part, &#8220;The university has become aware of various facts that have led to the unfortunate decision to terminate your employment for cause. At this point, the university has amassed a body of undisputed evidence of misconduct that warrants termination for cause.&#8221;
Tucker reportedly invited Tracy to the campus to speak three different times. On two occasions, Tracy spoke to the players and staff about sexual violence in sports culture and once to be recognized &#8220;as an honorary captain at the team&#8217;s spring football game,&#8221; USA Today reported.
However, according to a complaint filed with the university&#8217;s Title IX office in December, Tracy reportedly &#8220;sat frozen for several minutes while Tucker made sexual comments about her and masturbated.&#8221;
“The idea that someone could know me and say they understand my trauma but then re-inflict that trauma on me is so disgusting to me, it’s hard for me to even wrap my mind around it,” Tracy told USA TODAY. “It’s like he sought me out just to betray me.”
According to the report, the school hired an outside Title IX attorney to investigate Tracy&#8217;s complaint, which was concluded in July.
Tucker, who is married and has two children, acknowledged the accusations made against him during the phone call but claimed they had consensual &#8220;phone sex&#8221; and the allegations were &#8220;completely false.&#8221;
&#8220;Ms. Tracy&#8217;s distortion of our mutually consensual and intimate relationship into allegations of sexual exploitation has really affected me,&#8221; Tucker wrote in a March 22 letter to the investigator, USA Today reported. &#8220;I am not proud of my judgment and I am having difficulty forgiving myself for getting into this situation, but I did not engage in misconduct by any definition.&#8221;
Tucker&#8217;s termination will reportedly cost the football coach more than $80 million.
Tucker is reportedly scheduled to appear in a formal hearing beginning on October 5.

School officials suspended Michigan State University head football coach Mel Tucker without pay on Sunday after a prominent rape survivor and activist accused him of sexual harassment during a phone call.
According to <a href="https://apnews.com/article/mel-tucker-michigan-state-brenda-tracy-195fc122887dcf102a5cd8250385f202" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Associated Press</a>, Michigan State President Teresa K. Woodruff and athletic director Alan Haller announced the suspension pending the outcome of an MSU Title IX investigation into the allegations against the Spartans head coach.
Allegations against Tucker became public in a <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/investigations/2023/09/10/michigan-state-football-coach-sexual-harassment-claim/70679703007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">USA Today report</a> in which Brenda Tracy, a rape survivor who educates athletes about sexual violence, said the football coach sexually harassed her during a phone call on April 28, 2022.

She became a prominent activist against sexual violence in sports in 2014, and has spread the message of  &#8220;<a href="https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/for-holding-college-football-accountable-brenda-tracy-is-my-person-of-the-year/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Violence against women must stop</a>&#8221; across college sports.

Students Nolan Radomski and Nathan Barbieri are suing Wisner, claiming she used the money from students to donate to Planned Parenthood, as well as buy an RV for a trip around the U.S. By doing so, the pair of students claimed in the suit that Wisner “forced them to materially support the homicide of innocent children.” MSU has fired Wisner after complaints, and the school offered students a refund for the roughly $60,000 they paid to the leftist group.

A Burger King franchise must pay $8 million to Richard Tulecki, who claimed that he slipped on a “foreign substance” in the restaurant’s bathroom and &#8220;suffered lower back injuries resulting in surgery.” Tulecki’s attorneys said the fall caused &#8220;serious injuries,” which required surgery that then turned into a postoperative perforated colon. The lawsuit was filed in 2021. The sum — totaling $7.68 million, including earnings lost and medical expenses  — is one of Florida’s largest slip and fall verdicts on record.

A Michigan State University (MSU) professor is being sued by students after she allegedly compelled hundreds of her students to pay to join her radical leftist group as part of the curriculum for a required business communication course she taught.
Amy Wisner, a former marketing professor at MSU, allegedly <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12114999/Amy-Wisner-MSU-politics-professor-sued-making-students-pay-99-fee-join-left-wing-group.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">charged</a> 600 students $99 each to join The Rebellion Community, an outside group run by Wisner, using &#8220;her authority under University policies to select &#8216;course materials,'&#8221; according to the <a href="https://adfmedialegalfiles.blob.core.windows.net/files/BarbieriComplaint.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">lawsuit</a>.
Students Nolan Radomski and Nathan Barbieri are suing Wisner, claiming she used the money from students to donate to Planned Parenthood as well as buy an RV for a trip around the U.S.
By doing so, the pair of students claimed in the suit that Wisner &#8220;forced them to materially support the homicide of innocent children.&#8221;
MSU removed Wisner from the class in March after students complained about The Rebellion Community, <a href="https://www.mlive.com/news/2023/05/an-msu-professor-made-students-pay-99-each-to-sign-up-for-her-activist-website-now-theyre-suing.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to Michigan Live.
The school offered students a refund for the roughly $60,000 they paid to the leftist group. The refund money came from Broad College of Business funds, MSU spokesman Dan Olsen said, according to Michigan Live. Olsen also said that Wisner was no longer employed at the university.
However, the students are still asking the court to make Wisner pay back the money she took from students, or at least stop using the funds for political expression.
Wisner complained about her termination in an April 7 Facebook post.

&#8220;MSU fired me because they did not want me and my guest lecturers to teach diversity, equity, and inclusion to students in the core business communication class,&#8221; Wisner wrote. &#8220;The battle over this issue started in October 2022 and ended about a month ago when they fired me for insubordination.&#8221;
In their lawsuit, the pair of students say they object to some of The Rebellion Community&#8217;s political speech.

&#8220;Based on the content on The Rebellion Community Website and Defendant Wisner’s other speeches and posts, Plaintiffs also object to supporting the speech of The Rebellion Community and the unspecified &#8216;organizations fighting systemic oppression&#8217; that their money may also be supporting,&#8221; the lawsuit states.
The students cited the Rebellion Community&#8217;s Instagram page, which had a post that said, &#8220;I would like all the women in my life to stop for a minute, take a long, deep breath, and burn everything to the f***ing ground.&#8221;
Wisner allegedly described the group&#8217;s content as “patriarchy-smashing content,” which she defines as &#8220;any expectation that couples should get married before having children,&#8221; according to the lawsuit.
The students suing her said they believe that &#8220;God’s design for marriage, sexuality, and family &#8230; is good for both men and women and they oppose efforts to &#8216;smash&#8217; this order.&#8221;
On a GoFundMe <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/the-rebellion-rv-tour" target="_blank" rel="noopener">page</a> raising money for her RV trip, Wisner describes herself as a &#8220;single mom by choice&#8221; and says she and her kids are planning an RV road trip around the U.S. &#8220;to co-create communities of rebels.&#8221;
On Facebook in a post that has now been deleted, Wisner called her group a &#8220;safe place to co-ordinate our efforts to burn everything to the f***ing ground.&#8221;
Meanwhile, Wisner&#8217;s official syllabus <a href="https://www.mlive.com/news/2023/05/an-msu-professor-made-students-pay-99-each-to-sign-up-for-her-activist-website-now-theyre-suing.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">described</a> The Rebellion Community in more muted terms as &#8220;a global social learning community.&#8221;
The lawsuit also names Judith Whipple, the interim dean of the Broad College of Business and interim Provost Thomas Jeitschko as defendants.

Yet another college campus is being subjected to the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/gone-with-the-wind-publisher-calls-the-book-harmful" target="_blank" rel="noopener">endless demands</a> of woke censors who insist on ridding everyday speech of words that they deem offensive. 
This year&#8217;s <a href="https://brand.msu.edu/storytelling/inclusive-guide" target="_blank" rel="noopener">version</a> of Michigan State University&#8217;s style guide includes a supplemental “inclusive” style guide for communications department staffers which includes a list of terms to avoid, such as “female” and “America,” as well as terms relating to Christian holidays, like “Christmas trees,” “bells,” and “bunnies.” 
The guide lists words to avoid under four categories: “Gender and Sexuality,” “Race and Ethnicity,” “Global Identity,” and “Disability,” but MSU also said that the “inclusive” guide “is not comprehensive in scope.”
“In alignment with strategic efforts that advance diversity, equity and inclusion, the supplemental Inclusive Guide is a resource that provides best practices for communications on an increasingly diverse global campus,” the university <a href="https://brand.msu.edu/storytelling/inclusive-guide">said</a>. 
Under the &#8220;Gender and Sexuality&#8221; section, MSU advocates for using terms that support radical gender theories. In an effort to avoid “assuming” someone’s biological sex, MSU recommends avoiding the word “female” because it “reduces women to their assumed biological anatomy.” MSU made no mention of avoiding the term &#8220;male,&#8221; however. “Nickname” can also be considered offensive because it “implies that a person’s name is a substitute for their legal name,” MSU claimed. 
A <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20230401084737/https://brand.msu.edu/storytelling/inclusive-guide/global-identity" target="_blank" rel="noopener">previous version</a> of the style guide warned communications staff against using “majority religious imagery and language,” especially during the winter and spring seasons. Those problematic words, according to the university, include: “merry,” “Christmas trees,” “wreaths,” “holly,” “bells,” “gifts,” “reindeer,” “bunnies,” “eggs” and “chicks.” Instead, MSU encourages staffers to use the phrases “wishing you a wonderful winter/spring break” or “best wishes for the new year.&#8221;
The &#8220;inclusive&#8221; style guide — which doesn’t apply to academics, medical, legal, or other specialized categories — was updated in recent days, deleting references to those specific words. Now it simply says, “Avoid references to religious imagery and language. Use terms like ‘wishing you a wonderful winter/spring break’ or ‘best wishes for the new year.’”
The previous version of the style guide also cautioned communications staff against using the word “America” when referring to the United States. That warning has been removed in the most recent update.
Under the “Disability” label, MSU writes that it’s wrong to use “ableist language,” which includes words such as: “crazy,” “insane,” “bonkers,” “nuts,” “psycho,” “demented,” “senile,” “loony,” “lunatic,” “psychotic,” “addict,” “invalid,” “vegetable,” “paralyzed,” “lame,” “madhouse,” “tone-deaf,” “spazzing out,” “braindead” or “blindly.”
The terms &#8220;obese,&#8221; &#8220;obesity,&#8221; and &#8220;overweight&#8221; were also labeled problematic by MSU. The university prefers its staff to use &#8220;higher weight&#8221; or &#8220;larger-bodied.&#8221;
“MSU’s inclusive communication guide is a resource for communications professionals and leaders to strengthen the sense of belonging among our diverse university community,&#8221; MSU Deputy Spokesperson Dan Olsen told The Daily Wire. &#8220;Recently, some have expressed concern about the perception that the university is banning the use of specific terms. We want to be clear: that is inaccurate. That said, we recognized it was important that we update the guide to ensure our intent matches the guidance provided in the document.”

Students Brian Fraser, Alexandria Verner, and Arielle Anderson were killed, and five others were injured Monday night after a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/police-reveal-possible-motivations-behind-michigan-state-university-shooting" target="_blank" rel="noopener">43-year-old man</a> opened fire on students at two locations on the Michigan State campus. The suspect, who was unaffiliated with the university according to police, later committed suicide.
Michigan State University canceled classes through the end of the week, and the men’s basketball team postponed a home game scheduled for Wednesday against Minnesota as the campus reels from the tragedy. The Spartans’ game against Michigan will be its first time taking the court since the shooting.
Long-time Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo <a href="https://www.freep.com/story/sports/college/michigan-state/spartans/2023/02/16/michigan-state-basketball-tom-izzo-michigan-rivalry-msu-school-shooting/69912934007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> that after talking with mental health professionals earlier this week, they decided that it’s important for the team to play to begin the healing process.
“We&#8217;ve had a lot of help from some mental health professionals that I think really helped me,” Izzo remarked on Thursday. “They felt that if (MSU’s basketball team) played it would help not only themselves, the team, but maybe the campus heal a little better. And so we agreed that would be our battle cry.”
The legendary MSU figure added that playing on Saturday against Michigan will represent far more than another rivalry game.
“There’s some things that aren’t rivalries. There’s some things that are bigger than the game,” he said. “The game is gonna be really important to me, as it has been for all 28 years I&#8217;ve been here. But there&#8217;ll be a little asterisk on it. And I&#8217;m gonna have to do a good job of holding my emotions, their emotions. Everybody&#8217;s emotions.”
Despite the game taking on a much bigger meaning after the tragedy that unfolded in East Lansing, Michigan head coach Juwan Howard is still expecting a hard-fought contest.
“I expect two competitive teams to still go out there and compete,” Howard said on Friday, <a href="https://www.mlive.com/wolverines/2023/02/in-atypical-atmosphere-michigan-expects-typical-competition-vs-michigan-state.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to MLive. “Me and Coach Izzo … we put our hearts into our players and helping them go through whatever they go through, and preparing them to play the game they truly love.”
“We know once that ball goes up it’s going to be all about the game of basketball, and both teams trying to, at the end of day, win,” he added.

As <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/michigan-state-university">Michigan State University</a> continues to mourn the loss of three students at the hands of a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/shooting">gunman</a>, police have revealed the contents of the suspected shooter’s suicide note.
The 43-year-old suspect, who will not be named by The Daily Wire, had a two-page note in his wallet when he shot himself as police closed in on him following the shooting, The Daily Beast <a href="https://www.thedailybeast.com/michigan-state-shooting-cops-reveal-details-of-slighted-gunman-anthony-mcraes-motive">reported</a>. That note claimed MSU had rejected him for a job opening at some point in the past, though this rejection has not been confirmed.
Michigan State Police Lt. Rene Gonzalez said Thursday that the job rejection angle is “being investigated,” and also provided other possible motives for the shooter. One of the other possibilities is that the shooter suffered from mental illness.
The suspect’s note also mentioned a former job and suggested he was angry with previous employers and employees.
“It appears that he had some issues with the employees there where he was asked to leave,” Gonzalez said in reference to the suspect’s former job that was mentioned in the note. “So it looks like possibly a motive for that was he felt slighted, and that’s kind of what the note indicated.”
The note veered off into provably false territory when the suspect claimed he was one of 20 people prepared to carry out an attack. The suspect’s father reportedly told detectives that his son had no friends and stayed in his room all day.
“He ate, went to the bathroom in there,” Gonzalez said, according to the Beast. “His father didn’t believe he had any friends let alone 20 of them that would help him … so we kind of determined that he was the lone shooter in this.”
“We believe there were no other suspects involved and [the suspect] was the lone shooter,” Gonzalez added, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2023/02/16/michigan-state-gunman-note/">according to The Washington Post</a>.
The outlet also reported that MSU’s interim president, Teresa Woodruff, announced that classes were canceled through Sunday, and that Berkey Hall, where two of the students were killed, would be closed for the rest of the semester. School officials are still deciding whether to reopen the student union, where the third student was killed, the Post reported.
The suspected shooter had a previous 2019 conviction for possessing a loaded firearm in a vehicle, for which he spent up to 18 months in state prison, The Detroit News <a href="https://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/local/michigan/2023/02/14/three-killed-five-wounded-in-michigan-state-shooting-were-all-students/69901429007/">reported</a>. He was released from supervision in May 2021.
Police had also been called out to the suspect’s residence before because he would fire his gun out the back door, possibly for target practice, the News <a href="https://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/local/michigan/2023/02/14/msu-shooter-anthony-mcrae-a-convicted-felon-with-weapons-history/69901983007/">reported</a>.
Police released photos of the suspect, a black male, on Monday night, The Daily Wire previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/police-warn-of-shots-fired-at-michigan-state-university">reported</a>, and shortly after, a report came in of a person matching that description in the Lansing area, according to Chris Rozman, interim chief of the MSU Police and Public Safety Department. When police confronted the man, he reportedly shot himself. He died from his wound.

Shortly after Monday’s deadly shooting at the university, a landmark rock on the East Lansing campus — made famous by students who often spray paint messages on its face — displayed the message, “How Many More?” But on Tuesday night, the rock was repainted with a pro-gun message, WSBT <a href="https://wsbt.com/news/regional/michigan-state-university-the-rock-paint-how-many-more-guns-on-campus-mass-shooting-aftermath-east-lansing-control-second-amendment#" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
The new message painted on the rock read, “Allow Us to Defend Ourselves and Carry on Campus.” Local media <a href="https://www.wnem.com/2023/02/15/new-message-appears-rock-michigan-state-university/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that it’s unknown who painted the pro-gun message on the rock or if that person is a student at the university. 
The pro-gun message remained for only a few hours. Two students took exception to the display and met at the rock Wednesday morning to &#8220;cover this s*** up.&#8221;

Michigan State prohibits students, staff, and faculty from carrying firearms in campus facilities and public places, including classrooms, dorms, and stadiums. The university does, however, allow visitors with concealed carry permits to bring firearms on campus, WSBT reported. 
The university’s <a href="https://trustees.msu.edu/bylaws-ordinances-policies/ordinances/ordinance-18.00.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">policy</a> on firearms and weapons states, “Except as permitted by state law regulating firearms, no person shall possess any firearm or weapon anywhere upon property governed by the Board.”
Police officers and “other legally established law enforcement officers” are allowed to carry a gun on campus, according to the policy. 
Just hours after the deadly shooting, a leading Michigan Democrat took to social media to push for more gun control while <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/leading-mi-democrat-posts-obscene-message-on-thoughts-and-prayers-calls-for-gun-control">telling</a> his followers, “F*** your thoughts and prayers.” 
“Thoughts and prayers with action and change are meaningless,&#8221; said State Rep. Ranjeev Puri, the majority whip in Michigan’s Democrat-controlled House. &#8220;Our office will continue to work tirelessly to pass common sense gun reform immediately. We will not stop until our students can attend school without fear, our communities can attend places of worship in peace, and our society is safe from senseless gun violence.” 
Michigan State students will gather at “The Rock” Wednesday evening to hold a vigil for Brian Fraser, Alexandria Verner, and Arielle Anderson, the students killed in the shooting, <a href="https://www.wnem.com/2023/02/15/new-message-appears-rock-michigan-state-university/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to WNEM.

A top Democratic lawmaker in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/michigan" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Michigan</a> derided offering “thoughts and prayers” while pushing stricter gun regulations after a shooting at <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/michigan-state-university" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Michigan State University</a> on Monday.
State Rep. Ranjeev Puri, the majority whip in Michigan’s Democrat-controlled House, issued a statement just after midnight on Tuesday after, according to police, a 43-year-old gunman <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/police-warn-of-shots-fired-at-michigan-state-university" target="_blank" rel="noopener">killed</a> three students and wounded five more. The suspected gunman died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.
“Today, we begin to collectively heal from the horrific events which transpired, tomorrow we work,” Puri said in his early morning post on social media. “My official statement regarding the Michigan State University shooting is below: F*** your thoughts and prayers.”
In a longer statement attached to the post, Puri called thoughts and prayers “meaningless” without “action and change” before calling for stricter restrictions on firearms.
&#8220;What happened in East Lansing is unfortunately far too common,” Puri said. “Going to school in America, whether it’s pre-school or college, means risking your life every day to the threat of a mass shooting. Yet all we have offered up are empty solutions – traumatizing active shooter drills and bulletproof backpacks.”
“We do not need to live like this. The United States is the only country where this happens,” he continued.
He went on to suggest &#8220;common sense gun reform&#8221; legislation could have prevented the Michigan State shooting.
“Thoughts and prayers with action and change are meaningless. Our office will continue to work tirelessly to pass common sense gun reform immediately. We will not stop until our students can attend school without fear, our communities can attend places of worship in peace, and our society is safe from senseless gun violence,” Puri said.

It is unclear how the suspected Michigan State shooter came to possess his firearm. Authorities have recovered a firearm at the scene but have not yet confirmed if it was the same firearm used in the shooting, according to <a href="https://www.cnn.com/us/live-news/michigan-state-university-shooting-updates-2-14-23/h_9f50564cf6e227d45d2ad66965b4481e" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CNN</a>.
Michigan State University Interim President Teresa Woodruff said on Tuesday that all classes would be canceled until at least the next week.
The university would be in restricted operations for the next 48 hours, Woodruff <a href="https://www.cnn.com/us/live-news/michigan-state-university-shooting-updates-2-14-23/h_e504b57bb44f443d110c87d83b3273f4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in a press conference on Tuesday morning, “then we&#8217;ll move into a period where classes will be canceled until Monday morning, but campus operations will resume.”
“We will provide the resources the students need for the time period they need,” she continued, thanking the federal government for its support.

The man suspected of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/murder" target="_blank" rel="noopener">killing</a> three <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/michigan-state-university" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Michigan State University</a> students and critically injuring five more has been found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The 43-year-old suspect, who will not be named due to Daily Wire policy regarding mass shooters, had a previous 2019 conviction for possessing a loaded firearm in a vehicle, for which he spent up to 18 months in state prison, The Detroit News <a href="https://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/local/michigan/2023/02/14/three-killed-five-wounded-in-michigan-state-shooting-were-all-students/69901429007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. He was released from supervision in May 2021.
Police had also been called out to the suspect’s residence before because he would fire his gun out the back door, possibly for target practice, the News <a href="https://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/local/michigan/2023/02/14/msu-shooter-anthony-mcrae-a-convicted-felon-with-weapons-history/69901983007/">reported</a>.
Police released photos of the suspect, a black male, on Monday night, The Daily Wire previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/police-warn-of-shots-fired-at-michigan-state-university" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>, and shortly after, a report came in of a person matching that description in the Lansing area, according to Chris Rozman, interim chief of the MSU Police and Public Safety Department. When police confronted the man, he reportedly shot himself. He died from his wound.
A neighbor, Megan Bender, had listened to a police scanner after the shooting and told the News she believed the suspect was on his way back to their neighborhood when he was confronted by police. She added that she was relieved he wasn’t able to return to the neighborhood.
Police retrieved one firearm from the suspect, but haven’t said if search warrants discovered any additional evidence at his residence.
Police still don’t know why the man traveled to the university and shot the students.
&#8220;That&#8217;s what we&#8217;re trying to understand ― is why this incident occurred,&#8221; Rozman said Tuesday morning, according to the News.
Rozman said Monday night that police received calls about an apparent shooting at MSU’s Berkey Hall around 8:18 p.m., followed by reports of a shooting at the school’s student union building. Just before midnight, MSU police announced that three people had died and five more had been injured in the shooting.
MSU police also announced Monday night that all campus-related activities would be canceled for 48 hours, including athletics and classes.
In a tweet, Democratic Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer expressed sympathy for the community.
“Let’s wrap our arms around the Spartan community tonight. We will keep everyone updated as we learn more,” she wrote.
MSU Interim President Teresa Woodruff also spoke at a press conference on Tuesday morning, wiping away tears as she spoke about the tragedy.
&#8220;Together, we will come back more resilient than ever,&#8221; Woodruff said, according to the News, &#8220;and more ready to face what is needed in this society which is the courage of all of us to ensure this never happens again.&#8221;
