The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has launched a <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2025/12/11/hud-boston-fair-housing-discrimination">sweeping civil rights investigation</a> into the city of Boston, accusing Democratic Mayor Michelle Wu’s administration of implementing housing policies that unlawfully favor black, Latino, and other minority residents. The probe, announced Thursday, represents one of the most aggressive federal interventions yet in the Trump administration’s broader effort to dismantle local diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives it argues violate anti-discrimination law.
In a <a href="https://www.hud.gov/sites/default/files/Main/documents/Letter-FHEO-Fair-Housing-Act-Investigation.pdf">sharply worded letter</a> to Wu, HUD’s Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity said, “The context of race, fair housing is not about ‘the absence of racial discrimination . . . but the presence of deliberate systems . . . to achieve and sustain racial equity.’ But this is wrong. The text of the Fair Housing Act is unmistakably focused on eliminating discrimination in the housing market and outlining the penalties for engaging in this kind of discrimination.”
Assistant Secretary Craig Trainor wrote to Wu, “At your office’s direction, however, City officials have set out to smuggle ‘racial equity into every layer of operations in City government.’” The letter added, “City Officials Have Enthusiastically Embraced and Appear to Have Implemented the City’s Proposed Racial Spoils System.”
HUD Secretary Scott Turner echoed that language, calling Boston’s approach a “social engineering project” driven by DEI ideology rather than legitimate housing needs. “This warped mentality will be fully exposed,” Turner said, vowing the city would be brought into compliance with federal law. Turner has previously criticized what he calls race-based policymaking and, earlier this week, blamed former President Joe Biden for housing pressures tied to immigration, citing HUD’s newly released “Worst Case Housing Needs” report.

At issue are several city housing plans—most notably the Boston Housing Strategy 2025, the Assessment of Fair Housing, and the Anti-Displacement Action Plan—which call for targeted outreach to black and Latino families, increased lending in communities of color, and allocations of homeownership opportunities intended “particularly” for BIPOC households. One goal states that 65 percent of city-supported homeownership opportunities should go to BIPOC residents. HUD argues that these provisions constitute explicit racial preferences prohibited under federal civil rights law and past Supreme Court precedent that rejects “outright racial balancing.”
HUD’s letter also criticizes Boston’s use of racially based data tools, including maps that classify neighborhoods partly by racial composition to identify areas at “high risk” of displacement and thus eligible for more city investment. The department said these classifications revive the logic of “government-sponsored redlining,” even if intended to combat inequity. It further alleges that city agencies and nonprofit partners have implemented “race-conscious marketing and buyer selection,” and that Boston has pressured banks and developers to adopt race-based benchmarks.
The investigation reflects the Trump administration’s broader shift in civil rights enforcement, which has increasingly targeted DEI programs while cutting back on traditional fair housing oversight.
HUD will request documents from the city within 10 days, after which investigators may file formal discrimination charges or refer the case to the Justice Department.

President Donald Trump threatened to strip Boston of its status as host city for the 2026 FIFA World Cup following an eruption of public unrest.
“If somebody is doing a bad job, and I feel there are unsafe conditions, I would call Gianni, who’s head of FIFA,” Trump said Wednesday. “I would say, ‘Let’s move into another location,’ and he would do that.”
Last week, over 100 people took over a Boston street, setting off fireworks and illegally racing. According to prosecutors, the event appeared to be mass-coordinated, where “<a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/boston/news/boston-police-cruiser-destroyed-julian-bowers-william-cantwell/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">drivers perform burnouts, donuts, and illegal street races, often live-streaming the activities</a>.” The event ended with a police cruiser erupting in flames.
Trump reiterated the threat to Daily Wire White House Correspondent Mary Mararet Olohan in the Oval Office Wednesday.

Trump added that he would take the same action in California if he felt Los Angeles wasn’t prepared to host the 2028 Olympics.
To prepare for 2026, President Trump assembled the FIFA World Cup Task Force through executive order. He instructed the task force to coordinate with executive agencies and assist with the <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/03/establishing-the-white-house-task-force-on-the-fifa-world-cup-2026/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">planning, organization, and execution of events surrounding the World Cup. </a>
FIFA President Gianni Infantino expects the tournament to generate $40 billion in economic activity and create 200,000 jobs.
When announcing the task force, Trump and Infantino emphasized safety and hospitality. “It’s important that everyone coming to America feels safe and welcome,” Infantino said.
In an effort to prepare Boston to become a host city, President Trump offered to send the National Guard to Boston, but claimed Mayor Michelle Wu would not accept “because she thinks it’s bad politically.”
“Boston is honored and excited to host World Cup matches,” Boston Mayor Michelle Wu told The Daily Wire. “We look forward to welcoming fans from around the world to our beautiful city, the cradle of liberty and city of champions.”
Senator Elizabeth Warren weighed in on the dispute in an interview with Bloomberg, saying, “Michelle Wu is doing a terrific job.”
“Donald Trump doesn’t like anyone who doesn’t bend the knee, so frankly I’m not surprised that he’s trying to pick some sort of fight with Michelle Wu, but I don’t think it’s going to work,” Warren said.
Including Boston, the 2026 FIFA World Cup secured 16 host cities: 11 in the United States, three in Mexico, and two in Canada. To finalize host status, each city signed a legally binding contract with FIFA, outlining the rights, responsibilities, and obligations.
In 2023, the Seattle City Council released its Host City Agreement, which contains a clause titled “Revocation of Host City Selection.” The clause states that FIFA’s host city selection assumes the city will meet “all requirements and act in full compliance with its obligations resulting from, or in connection with, this Host City Agreement.”
If the city fails to meet its obligations, FIFA reserves the right to revoke host status.
Meaning, if Trump requests FIFA intervene, President Infantino could potentially invoke this clause and argue that Boston no longer meets its contractual requirements. The City of Boston could then contest the decision in court.
“We hope every one of our 16 host cities will be ready to successfully host and fulfil all necessary requirements,” a FIFA spokesperson said following Trump&#8217;s comments. “Safety and security are the top priorities at all FIFA events worldwide.”
“Safety and security are obviously the governments&#8217; responsibility, and they decide what is in the best interest for public safety,” the spokesperson added.

After leftist Boston Democratic Mayor Michelle Wu attacked Attorney General Pam Bondi’s order to dismantle the city’s sanctuary policy, acting ICE Director Todd Lyons <a href="https://www.bostonherald.com/2025/08/20/ice-director-vows-to-flood-boston-after-mayor-wus-refusal-to-strip-sanctuary-protections/">fired back</a> on Wednesday, saying the agency would “flood the zone.”
Earlier this month, Bondi sent a letter to Wu that <a href="https://www.bostonherald.com/2025/08/18/mayor-wu-to-respond-to-feds-demand-to-strip-sanctuary-protections-boston-does-not-back-down-to-bullies/">stated</a>, “For too long, so-called sanctuary jurisdiction policies have undermined this necessary cooperation and obstructed federal immigration enforcement, giving aliens cover to perpetrate crimes in our communities and evade the immigration consequences that federal law requires. You are hereby notified that your jurisdiction has been identified as one that engages in sanctuary policies and practices that thwart federal immigration enforcement to the detriment of the interests of the United States. This ends now.”
On Monday, Bondi told Fox News of her directive to sanctuary cities: “If they don’t comply with us, we’re going to work with other agencies to cut off their federal funding. We are going to send in law enforcement just like we did during the LA riots, just like we’re doing here in Washington, D.C. And if they’re not going to keep their citizens safe, Donald Trump will keep them safe.”
Wu held a press conference on Tuesday where she  arrogantly responded, “The U.S. Attorney General asked for a response today, so here it is. Stop attacking our cities to hide your administration’s failures. Unlike the Trump administration, Boston follows the law, and Boston will not back down from who we are or what we stand for. We will not back away from our community that has made us the safest city in the country.”
Bondi had given Wu a Tuesday deadline to respond to the letter she sent to Wu and other leaders of cities and states identified by the Department of Justice as sanctuary jurisdictions, with an order to “eliminate laws, policies and practices that impede federal law enforcement.”
Speaking on “The Howie Carr Show” on Wednesday, Lyons said ICE is “going to keep making Boston safe, as she’s failing to do with the sanctuary city policies.”

It’s not making anyone safer.”
Lyons said that although Boston police are barred from helping ICE because of the city’s Trust Act, some are helping ICE surreptitiously because they fear “getting in trouble or getting fired.”

On February 16, Democrat-appointed Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/boston-police-commissioner-doubles-down-ice-resistance-we-dont-enforce-detainers" target="_blank" rel="noopener">echoed</a> Wu, who had promised resistance to the deportations enforced by the Trump administration. Cox said Boston police officers “don’t have authority to enforce federal immigration law.” When asked if his perspective countered federal immigration law, Cox said the Boston Police Department has pretty defined rules and abides by state law.
Speaking at CPAC on February 22, Homan said he would go to Boston while quoting Kurt Russell as Wyatt Earp in the classic Western film “Tombstone”:

Roughly two weeks later, Wu <a href="https://www.facebook.com/reel/573946825689920" target="_blank" rel="noopener">testified</a> before Congress, stating, “Let’s talk about Tom Homan. Shame on him for lying about my city, for having the nerve to insult our police commissioner, who has overseen the safest Boston has been in anyone’s lifetime.”
On Monday, Homan, a former police officer, fired back. He stated on X:

These arrests included 6 foreign fugitives, including four who were wanted for murder or to serve a criminal sentence for murder, along with drug traffickers, child sexual predators and numerous other violent public safety threats.  These officers and agents made the neighborhoods of Boston and Massachusetts much safer.  They risked their own safety by arresting these criminals on the street, rather than a jail. Governor Healy and Mayor Wu should be ashamed of supporting sanctuary policies.  Releasing public safety threats back into the public, rather than working with ICE at the jails, puts the public at great risk. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu offered &#8220;condolences&#8221; for the death of a knife-wielding attacker, sparking backlash online.
An off-duty police officer killed who police said was an attempted stabber during an altercation in a Chick-fil-A on Boylston Street in Boston on Saturday. The attacker tried to stab two people before he was shot.
Wu addressed the situation in remarks on Saturday, offering her “condolences” over the death of the knife-wielding man.
“My condolences and all of our thoughts are with family of the individual whose life has been lost,” Wu said at the start of her remarks during a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUQFon2PL4U" target="_blank" rel="noopener">press conference</a>.
Police said the knife attacker was shot after two people ran inside the restaurant being chased by the man with the knife. An off-duty officer inside the restaurant told the man to drop his knife. The man refused, and the officer shot him. The man later died at a hospital.
Wu’s comments sparked backlash online after an account on X called “Bostonians Against Mayor Wu” posted a clip of her remarks online.

Massachusetts Attorney General <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/mayor-of-boston-equates-requiring-proof-of-vaccination-to-jim-crow-trump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Andrea Campbell</a> has found that Boston Mayor <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/michelle-wu" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Michelle Wu</a>, a fellow Democrat, did nothing wrong holding a holiday party for public officials that excluded white people.
The AG&#8217;s office maintains that the event was not open to the public and therefore doesn&#8217;t violate the state&#8217;s public accommodation law, Fox News <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/boston-mayors-party-that-excluded-white-officials-didnt-violate-law-ag" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reports</a>.
The law specifically prohibits &#8220;making any distinction, discrimination, or restriction in admission to or treatment in a place of public accommodation based on race, color, religious creed, national origin, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, deafness, blindness, or any physical or mental disability, or ancestry.&#8221;
Notably, the office refuses to even open an investigation into the matter, despite numerous formal complaints being filed about the segregated party.
An email sent by City Council relations director Denise DosSantos revealed that the controversial party was dubbed the &#8220;Electeds of Color Holiday Party,&#8221; <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/boston-mayor-posts-picture-of-elected-officials-enjoying-christmas-party-that-excluded-white-people-calls-it-a-special-moment" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Daily Wire</a> reported last month.
“On behalf of Mayor Michelle Wu, I cordially invite you and a guest to the Electeds of Color Holiday Party on Wednesday, December 13 at 5:30 p.m. at the Parkman House, 33 Beacon Street,” DosSantos <a href="https://www.boston25news.com/news/local/email-invite-electeds-color-holiday-party-mistakenly-sent-all-boston-city-councilors/LRQRP3WGFNHLZC5DLCB6PPNESY/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a> in the email invite.
Fifteen minutes later, however, DosSantos sent out another email apologizing for sending the email to all council members, indicating that it wasn’t supposed to be sent to white members of the council.
“I wanted to apologize for my previous email regarding the Holiday Party for tomorrow. I did send that to everyone by accident, I apologize if my email may have offended or came across as so,” she said, <a href="https://www.boston25news.com/news/local/email-invite-electeds-color-holiday-party-mistakenly-sent-all-boston-city-councilors/LRQRP3WGFNHLZC5DLCB6PPNESY/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to Boston 25 News. “Sorry for any confusion this may have caused.”

&#8220;Not too long ago in Boston, we didn’t need such a big table to fit electeds of color,&#8221; Wu continued. &#8220;But over my time as a City Councilor and now Mayor, following so many leaders who have paved the way, I’ve proudly watched this group grow and create space for mentorship and fellowship among many who are breaking down barriers while holding the weight of being the first or only. Throughout the year, we work to represent our communities with urgency and determination. And at the holidays, we take the time to celebrate and enjoy each other’s company!&#8221;
Facing backlash, Wu further defended the party, saying, “I can understand someone might be confused or worried if certain people weren’t being invited at all or were being left out of any type of celebration. But I assure you, everyone on the Boston City Council has got an invitation to multiple types of events and holiday parties.&#8221;
Wu has been accused of racial discrimination in the past over her comments and her administration’s policies. Last year, Wu <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/boston-democrat-mayor-sued-for-allegedly-discriminating-against-white-restaurant-owners" target="_blank" rel="noopener">was sued</a> by a group of white restaurant owners who say they were targeted for city fees in part due to their ethnic heritage.

Wu faced backlash earlier this week after an email from her administration mistakenly went out to all city council members, inviting them to an “Electeds of Color Holiday Party.” After doubling down on her administration’s decision to hold the holiday party with only people of color, Wu celebrated the gathering by posting a picture of everyone in attendance. 
“Last night was my turn to host the annual holiday dinner for Boston’s elected officials of color—a special moment to appreciate that our affinity group now includes leadership across city, state, county, and federal offices,” Wu said in the caption of her social media post.

While Wu apologized after an email was accidentally sent to white government officials who were not invited to the party, she defended the discriminatory gathering, saying white elected officials are invited to other events during the holiday season. 
“I can understand someone might be confused or worried if certain people weren’t being invited at all or were being left out of any type of celebration. But I assure you, everyone on the Boston City Council has got an invitation to multiple types of events and holiday parties,” Wu <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12862493/michelle-wu-electeds-color-boston-holiday-party.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>.
Shortly after the email was mistakenly sent by City Council relations director Denise DosSantos to all city council members, DosSantos sent out another email apologizing, indicating that it wasn’t supposed to end up in the inboxes of white council members. Councilman Frank Baker, who is white, found the party “divisive” but said there’s nothing he can do about it. 
“You don’t want me at a party, I’m not going to come to a party,” Baker remarked. Later, the white councilman <a href="https://www.bostonherald.com/2023/12/13/battenfeld-michelle-wu-defends-holiday-party-excluding-white-city-councilors/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> The Boston Herald, “I find it unfortunate that with the temperature the way it is, that we would further that division.”

Wu was criticized earlier this year for a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/boston-mayor-michelle-wu-blasted-for-white-jokes-at-st-patricks-day-breakfast">joke</a> she made during a St. Patrick’s Day speech that targeted white people. 
&#8220;I&#8217;m getting used to dealing with problems that are expensive, disruptive, and white,” the Democratic mayor said. 
That comment was mentioned in court documents in a lawsuit from five white restaurant owners who alleged that Wu singled them out for a $7,500 outdoor dining fee, a fee which only applied to establishments in their neighborhood. The restaurant owners later had to withdraw their lawsuit after legal setbacks.

Whether that&#8217;s true or not, it probably isn&#8217;t wise to try that sleeping aid strategy in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/boston" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Boston City Hall</a> late at night without permission.
Yet that&#8217;s exactly what Boston police allege 35-year-old George Williams, Boston&#8217;s Reparations Task Force project coordinator, has been doing. Authorities say that Williams overstayed his welcome at The Hub&#8217;s city hall for the past three weeks while showing arguably erratic behavior. On Thursday night, Williams was arrested for allegedly trespassing in an upstairs office at 9:40 p.m. Eastern.
According to a police report, city employees say that throughout May, they have had difficulties “with him trespassing in the building after hours, and at times becoming aggressive and threatening other staff members inside of City Hall.&#8221;

How did he get there? Well, he allegedly chased off a custodian to gain access to the room.
He was originally asked to leave by police, but became hostile, <a href="https://www.boston25news.com/news/local/coordinator-bostons-reparations-task-force-fired-after-being-arrested-inside-city-hall/CYDNXIZWPFFVZKGOVMKJWGCF4Q/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to Fox 25. Williams is accused of lunging at an officer before picking up a dustpan and broom to clean up his mess. When authorities requested him to leave again, he allegedly swept debris in their direction.
If it sounds bizarre, readers should know that police suspected he was on drugs. Officials finally de-escalated the situation and were able to haul him away, but not before he tried to attack a second member of Boston police, Fox 25 reported.
As readers can tell, only the best and the brightest get hired by Boston&#8217;s woke Mayor Michelle Wu. Williams was picked by Wu to serve as part of her Reparations Task Force in 2022.

That task force is supposed to be &#8220;working with a research partner to release a study on the legacy of slavery in Boston and its impact on descendants today.&#8221; Per the website, the Task Force is still looking for a research partner.
Slavery became <a href="https://www.mass.gov/guides/massachusetts-constitution-and-the-abolition-of-slavery#:~:text=In%201780%2C%20when%20the%20Massachusetts,judicial%20review%20to%20abolish%20slavery." target="_blank" rel="noopener">illegal</a> in Boston and throughout the Bay State in 1783.
Nonetheless, the task force will also be engaging &#8220;the community throughout the process to include input from lived experience&#8221; and then provide recommendations &#8220;for reparative justice solutions for Black residents.&#8221;
Williams — however excited he once was to be a project coordinator with the group — is no longer a part of it. In a statement given to Fox 25, the city <a href="https://www.boston25news.com/news/local/coordinator-bostons-reparations-task-force-fired-after-being-arrested-inside-city-hall/CYDNXIZWPFFVZKGOVMKJWGCF4Q/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>, &#8220;George Williams was a part-time contractor. His contract has been terminated. We remain committed to the work of the Reparations Task Force and that work will continue.&#8221;

Yep, he once worked at the University of Colorado in the Sociology department, his now <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20230514062915/https://www.boston.gov/government/cabinets/equity-and-inclusion-cabinet/george-williams" target="_blank" rel="noopener">deleted biography page on Boston.gov</a> stated.
If I were a betting man, and I am, then I would wager that Williams and any potential allies he has will blame his run-in with the law on systemic racism stemming from slavery. That sort of tactic works across America wherever so-called reparative, restorative, and racial justice is pursued. And just like Williams&#8217; previous arrests, it always ends with a slap on the wrist.

Boston’s Reparations Task Force Coordinator Fired After Burning Sage, Harassing Custodians, Sleeping In City Hall, And Getting Arrested: Report

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/boston" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Boston</a> Democrat Mayor <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/michelle-wu" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Michelle Wu</a> has been accused of racial discrimination by a group of white restaurant owners who say they were targeted for city fees in part due to their ethnic heritage.
According to the restaurant owners, Wu and the city singled them out for a $7,500 outdoor dining fee, a fee which <a href="https://www.boston.com/news/local-news/2023/03/08/north-end-restaurant-owners-claim-discriminated-lawsuit/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">only applied</a> to establishments in their neighborhood. The plaintiffs are seeking $500,000 in compensatory damages and $1 million in punitive damages.
“It is commonly known that the traditional owner of a restaurant in the North End of Boston is a white male of Italian descent, and the North End is generally regarded (as) the last true ethnic Boston Italian neighborhood,&#8221; a Tuesday legal filing from the group of restaurant owners <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/boston/news/north-end-restaurant-owners-sue-mayor-michelle-wu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>.
“The Plaintiffs had a right to be treated the same as other restaurants in the City who were granted outdoor dining and not singled out to pay fees … to have outdoor dining because of their sex or national origin/ethnicity as appears in this case,” the lawsuit continues.
Those suing Wu include Jorge Mendoza-Iturralde, Carla Gomes, Jason and Kim Silvestri, and Patrick Mendoza, all of whom run restaurants in Boston’s North End neighborhood. In October, a judge dismissed a similar claim from the group when they said the fees imposed on them were unconstitutional.
Wu claimed the fees were necessary to ease traffic congestion and garbage disposal in the historic neighborhood, which was the only place in the city to be given the extra fees. After criticism, Wu eased the requirements somewhat and introduced a way some establishments could apply for exemption.
“I won’t comment on ongoing litigation that the city is involved in, but I will say that we stand fully behind decisions that are to ensure residents can live in their neighborhoods with the full range of ease of access and safety and opportunity,” Wu told reporters when asked about the suit.
Jorge Mendoza-Iturralde, one of those involved in the suit, <a href="https://www.bostonherald.com/2022/04/27/north-end-restaurateur-says-hes-running-for-boston-city-council-seat/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ran unsuccessfully</a> for a city council seat last year in response to Wu’s restaurant fees, running on a platform of supporting law enforcement, small businesses, and maintaining the city’s historic monuments.
“The city of Boston is failing the people and I feel I have to do something about it,” he said in announcing his campaign. “I will be a vocal challenge to Mayor Wu.”
Wu has come under fire for <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/boston-mayor-michelle-wu-blasted-for-white-jokes-at-st-patricks-day-breakfast" target="_blank" rel="noopener">racially charged jokes</a> in the past, making a joke last St. Patrick’s Day about having to deal with “white” problems.
“I’m getting used to dealing with problems that are expensive, disruptive, and white — I’m talking about snowflakes, snowstorms, snowflakes!” Wu said at the time.
