On Thursday, former President Barack Obama opened his monstrosity: the Obama Presidential Center.
It looks like a trash bin. 
I don&#8217;t mean that there&#8217;s trash everywhere. I mean, it&#8217;s nice and clean — and it also looks like a trash bin. It is a hideous structure that rises from the area around the lake in Chicago. It resembles the transporter, the gigantic machine used by the Jawas in Star Wars Episode IV.
Obama showed up. President Donald Trump did not. The entire opening was a subtweet of President Trump.
Barack and Michelle Obama were on the publicity tour, and Barack Obama announced that the next chapter in his life is “fun,” while Michelle&#8217;s next chapter is “me.”
I thought her last chapter was “me” and the one before that, and well, pretty much all the chapters, actually.

The salient point is that Barack Obama has been masquerading for his entire career as a man who cares about common American values. As I&#8217;ve said before, the disappointment with Barack Obama as a politician and human being is that in 2008, he ran as the great unifier, and by 2012, he was running as the great disunifier. He was running as a man who divided Americans based on race, based on sexual orientation, and based on political acumen. And then he would proclaim that only if you were good, true, and decent, and perhaps victimized, could you join in the project of America.
Now he is back to “I&#8217;m a unifier. Donald Trump is the divider.”
Obama, an unbelievably divisive politician, is good at this. President Trump is not a uniter; he’s obviously quite divisive. But he also says all the quiet parts out loud.
Barack Obama&#8217;s entire shtick for years was that he would pretend that he was trying to unify Americans while offering some of the most divisive rhetoric in American history. He stated Thursday:
<blockquote>They are not Republican or Democratic values. They&#8217;re American values we can all share, regardless of party values. Values every president here today, as different as we are, has tried our best to uphold. Values that John McCain and Mitt Romney believed in no less than I did. It is our greatest inheritance, the story of America at its best, because it reflects a basic faith in the decency of our fellow citizens and the possibility that, despite all of our differences, we can see each other and understand one another.</blockquote>
This guy destroyed John McCain, then proceeded to destroy Mitt Romney as a human being. The “values we hold in common with John McCain”? He suggested that John McCain was just George W. Bush, part III. He went after Mitt Romney; his super PACs said that Mitt Romney was a person who was getting people killed with cancer because of his terrible record in the capital markets. His campaign pushed out propaganda about Mitt Romney forcibly cutting the hair of gay kids when he was a teenager and strapping a dog to the top of his car. His vice president went out there proclaiming that Mitt Romney wanted to re-enslave black people.
Listening to Barack Obama talk about divisiveness and how he wants to stop it is like O.J. Simpson&#8217;s book, “If I Did It.”
You did it, dude.
He continued along these lines:
<blockquote>Deep in our gut, we want to find a way to turn towards each other again, not further away. I believe this because I&#8217;ve seen it all across our country and cities that have worked together to reclaim their streets from crime, and rural communities that have rebuilt their economy, and businesses that are finding new ways to make housing affordable. And those ordinary people in the Twin Cities who braved frigid temperatures, risked their own safety, standing shoulder to shoulder to look out for their neighbors and sometimes look out for strangers because they knew that was the right thing to do. </blockquote>
Barack Obama as a great unifier? It was always pathetic. 
This is why Donald Trump shattered the bizarre media consensus that everybody had to be friends.
This is one of my major points of irritation with George W. Bush. There are a lot of things that have been directed at George W. Bush incorrectly; I think that many of the ways people talk about the war in Iraq and what George W. Bush did during that war are awful.
With that said, Bush’s “We’re all in solidarity,” or the Bushes acting as though they were chummy with the Obamas while the Obamas divided the country, was hard to stomach.
Donald Trump didn&#8217;t do that. It was a breath of fresh air.
So what is Barack Obama really seeking? He is seeking “complexity” around the American narrative. By complexity, he means “America sucks,” but if you slap an American flag on top of the “America sucks” message, then that&#8217;s “complexity.” He stated:
<blockquote>I think it&#8217;s complicated. As I said, I think it&#8217;s possible to celebrate the founders and appreciate what they did as well as look objectively and critically at how their values strayed very far from what they professed. I think it&#8217;s impossible to say that there were populists in rural America and the South and white America that really did believe in equality and justice — for white folks and helped to make progress in giving more people opportunity and not ignore the fact that that was to the exclusion of others. And that&#8217;s the kind of complexity that I hope people get a little bit of a sense of. </blockquote>
American history is indeed complex, but the question is whether America is fundamentally good with complexity or fundamentally bad with complexity. And Barack Obama gives different messages on that matter all the time.
But when he&#8217;s doing his big, soaring speeches as he did at the opening of the Obama Presidential Center, then it&#8217;s all back to 2008 Obama: “No red states, no blue states, just the United States, no more perfect union, etc.”
If he had not spent years dividing Americans on the basis of race, if he had not spent years weakening American foreign policy in dramatic ways, if he had not spent years pretending to be moderate while acting as a radical, that would have helped a lot.
It&#8217;s stomach-churning to listen to a figure as divisive as Barack Obama pretending that he was some sort of great unifier.

Former First Lady Michelle Obama raised eyebrows with what her next chapter in life might look like.
The Obamas sat down with Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts ahead of the opening of the Obama Presidential Center. The long-delayed, over-budget project includes a 225-foot-tall museum tower and a nearly 20-acre campus funded through private donations, according to the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/obama-museum-chicago-by-numbers-beehive-3d0c4704b0923895ed440b7684e4bc0c">Associated Press.</a>
“One word to describe your next chapter,” Roberts asked the couple.
Barack Obama said, “Fun.”
Michelle Obama replied: “Me.”

“What a selfish and entitled person,” Steve Guest, a conservative commentator, said.
Michelle Obama’s apparent focus on her own priorities comes months after she was forced to address swirling rumors that she and her husband of 32 years, former President Barack Obama, could be heading for divorce.
In April, the 62-year-old “Becoming” author discussed the rumors during an episode of Sophia Bush’s “Work in Progress” podcast.
Speculation about potential marital struggles started swirling after Michelle skipped attending former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral in December. She also didn’t attend President Donald Trump’s second inauguration, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/michelle-obama-addresses-divorce-rumors">The Daily Wire</a> previously reported.
“The interesting thing is that, when I say ‘no,’ for the most part people are like, ‘I get it, and I’m okay,&#8217;” Michelle said, per <a href="https://www.eonline.com/news/1415869/michelle-obama-breaks-silence-on-barack-obama-divorce-rumors">E! News</a>. “That’s the thing that we as women, I think … we struggle with disappointing people. I mean, so much so that this year people were … they couldn’t even fathom that I was making a choice for myself that they had to assume that my husband and I are divorcing.”
“This couldn’t be a grown woman just making a set of decisions for herself, right?” she continued. “But that’s what society does to us. We start, actually, finally going, ‘What am I doing? Who am I doing this for?’ And if it doesn’t fit into the sort of stereotype of what people think we should do, then it gets labeled as something negative and horrible.”
Then, Michelle said she’s considering “making some big girl decisions” at this point in her life and understanding that she has to “own it fully.”
“If not now, when? What am I waiting for? How am I going to spend 20 years?” she said during the interview. “Now is the time for me to start asking myself these hard questions of, ‘Who do I truly want to be every day?&#8217;”
“And that changes,” she added. “So, who do I want to have a lunch with? How long do I want to stay in a place? Do I want to travel? If a girlfriend calls and says, ‘Let’s go here,’ I can say ‘Yes!’ I can. And I’m trying to do that more and more.”
The former president has not specifically addressed divorce rumors, but he did mention his marriage while speaking with Hamilton College president Steven Tepper.
“I was in a deep deficit with my wife, so I have been trying to dig myself out of that hole by doing occasionally fun things,” he said at the time.
On Michelle&#8217;s podcast, which she hosts with her brother, the couple tried to dismiss the rumors.
“She took me back,” <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSCINsWxHyw">Barack said</a>. “It was touch-and-go for a while.”

Film critics <a href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/becoming_2020_2/reviews/top-critics">raved</a> over &#8220;Becoming,&#8221; the fawning 2020 documentary about former First Lady Michelle Obama, produced by Michelle Obama.

NPR: Even with its flaws, Becoming is a compelling documentary, offering a carefully revealing look at a whip smart, ferociously practical woman trying to understand how her historic time in the White House changed herself, her family and the nation. </blockquote>
Now, see if you can detect a <a href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/melania/reviews/top-critics">slight tonal shift</a> in reviews for “Melania,” the new documentary capturing First Lady Melania Trump, who also produced the film, as she moves back into 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. NW.
<blockquote>Globe and Mail: Ratner has accidentally delivered the ultimate chronicle of 21st-century excess and greed, a world of casual yet immense cruelty covered in flop sweat and gold glitter.
Variety: A documentary that never comes to life. It’s a “portrait” of the First Lady of the United States, but it’s so orchestrated and airbrushed and stage-managed that it barely rises to the level of a shameless infomercial.</blockquote>
Several reviews compared the film to Nazi propaganda. One critic gave “Melania” a “rotten” score at Rotten Tomatoes while admitting <a href="https://www.hollywoodintoto.com/melania-reviews-critic-didnt-watch/">he never actually saw the film</a>. (That review was quickly removed from the critical aggregator site)

The Guardian’s review compared the movie to <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/film/2026/jan/30/melania-review-trump-film-is-a-gilded-trash-remake-of-the-zone-of-interest">2024’s “The Zone of Interest.”</a> That well-received drama depicted a Nazi family living next door to a concentration camp.
The reviewer didn’t stop there, mocking FLOTUS’s face and voice, a no-no in critical circles. Review the film, not the physical attributes of the people on screen. When a Variety scribe suggested actress Carey Mulligan wasn’t pretty enough to play the femme fatale in 2020’s “Promising Young Woman,” the outlet <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/film/2021/jan/28/variety-apology-carey-mulligan-film-critics">uttered an apology</a> directly to the actress.
For some reason, that unwritten rule didn’t apply to “Melania.” Nor should FLOTUS expect an apology any time soon.
The chasm between movie critics and general audiences over “Melania” may be the new, startling benchmark. Rotten Tomatoes lists the film as having a 7% “Rotten” score from movie scribes and <a href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/melania">a 99 percent “fresh”</a> rating from the public at large.
Those blistering critiques, delivered by a film body that leans overwhelmingly to the Left, were just part of the media’s war on “Melania.”
The said war began before “Melania” hit American theaters on January 30. Outlet after outlet preened over reports of <a href="https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/movies/articles/melania-trump-promotes-film-amid-210206431.html">poor pre-release ticket sales</a>. So did <a href="https://www.aol.com/lifestyle/stephen-colbert-roasts-melania-documentary-144531012.html">Stephen Colbert of “The Late Show” fame.</a>
Empty theaters, reporters cried, suggested “Melania” would underperform even modest expectations. It did the opposite, earning north of $7 million in its opening frame. Recent documentaries made far, far less.

For context, most documentaries are lucky to earn $1 million in theaters. “Melania,” media voices argued, might not make it to the $3 million mark. And, with a gaudy $40 million price tag courtesy of Jeff Bezos’ Amazon, that’s a debacle.
Except “Melania” delivered the biggest <a href="https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/insight/melania-opens-with-decade-best-documentary-debut/gm-8AE15378FA?gemSnapshotKey=8AE15378FA-snapshot-4&amp;ocid=AARDHP">documentary debut in a decade</a>. The film <a href="https://www.breitbart.com/entertainment/2026/02/05/nolte-exclusive-melania-gains-more-box-office-steam-with-wednesdays-1-25-million-haul/">has kept earning since then</a>.

USA Today argued it’s <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/columnist/2026/01/30/melania-movie-amazon-documentary-trump/88415378007/">“patriotic” to slam “Melania</a>.”
To be the subject of a documentary, one would think you’d have to accomplish something beyond being a complicit grifter in two of the most cruel, dishonest, and dangerous presidential terms in American history.
Indiewire said the film’s box office success <a href="https://www.indiewire.com/features/commentary/melania-box-office-documentary-filmmakers-worried-1235177403/">is terrible news for the documentary genre</a>.  Suddenly, a rising tide doesn’t lift all boats.
It’s a scary time for documentarians. Will they have to start working with the likes of Brett Ratner to make infomercials that please Donald Trump to pay the bills? The success of “Melania” suggests they might.
Meanwhile, a news media landscape that routinely decries review bombing – the practice of slagging a film or TV show sight unseen due to a variety of pre-release complaints, like overt wokeness – suddenly <a href="https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2026/01/melania-documentary-reviews-deleted-letterboxd/">cheered on review bombing of “Melania.”</a>
NPR needed something negative to share about the film. So it dug into the demographic breakdown of movie patrons and determined a large number of <a href="https://www.npr.org/2026/02/02/nx-s1-5693775/melania-documentary-box-office-audience">older white women</a> lined up to see “Melania.”
How often do media outlets report on the demographics of a given film? Hint: Not very often. NPR likely sought to portray the film’s fan base as overwhelmingly white (with a touch of supremacy?)
A few outlets have thrown all credibility to the wind to savage “Melania.” The far-Left Daily Beast took the crown here. The site has repeatedly called the film a “<a href="https://www.thedailybeast.com/trump-desperately-tries-to-juice-melania-doc-after-box-office-flop/">flop,”</a> although it’s on pace to pass 2024’s “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/videos/am-i-racist?elementPosition=1&amp;row=1&amp;rowHeadline=Shows+and+Movies&amp;rowType=Portrait+Show+Carousel">Am I Racist?</a>” as the most successful documentary of the last decade.

“Melania” expands its release pattern in its second weekend, upping the theatrical count to 2,000 screens. Even if the film underperforms from here, the theatrical release has done its job.
Amazon likely viewed the film all along as a Prime Video draw, first and foremost. The documentary will draw attention and eyeballs to the streaming service, giving it a competitive title in a cutthroat streaming landscape. The film’s theatrical bow is an extended promotion for its final, digital destination.
Why all the unprofessional hate? The <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/politics-news/melania-trump-brett-ratner-documentary-interview-1236489826/">First Lady may have said it best</a> at the premiere of her own movie.
“Superior storytelling drives culture and in turn moves markets.”
Legacy Media outlets fear a conservative encroachment on their turf most of all.

Michelle Obama joined the sex and dating podcast “Call Her Daddy” to criticize society&#8217;s fixation on women&#8217;s appearances while promoting her new book, “The Look,” which explores her outfits as the former first lady.
Without a hint of irony, Obama told podcast host Alex Cooper that she wished the press focused less on what she wore and more on her education and professional background.
“The top of the article would be ‘she was wearing…’” Obama lamented. &#8220;Not my education, not my professional career.” 
Cooper agreed with Obama, though both women seemed to forget that the interview had opened with, “Talk to me about your outfit. How did you pick it?” 
The irony continued when, instead of delving into her professional accomplishments, Obama highlighted the personal toll of being overlooked &#8220;as just Barack Obama’s wife.&#8221;
“All of that just disappeared in the course of this whole [2008] election,” she said after listing her professional accomplishments as an attorney, assistant to the Chicago mayor, nonprofit leader, and vice president for community relations at the University of Chicago Hospitals. “You now see me as just Barack Obama’s wife … my shoes became the most important thing about me,” she added. 
While she declined to say more about her past careers, Obama was clear about one path she would not take: Politics. “Don’t even ask me about running,” she said. “Because you all are lying. You aren’t ready for a woman. You are not.” 
Obama explained that Donald Trump didn’t win because Americans favored him over Kamala Harris or Hillary Clinton, but because the nation is not yet ready for a woman in the Oval Office. 
“Let’s look at the fact that we’ve had two really qualified female candidates,” she said. “One who was first lady, secretary of state, well educated, you know, my husband beat her… And now we just had the former vice president, you know, we’ve had qualified women and they just, you know, again, if they’re not perfect and they don’t cross every T and dot every I, there’s a falling shortness that is happening.” Still, she urged young women — especially those interested in public service — not to be discouraged. “We need you,” Obama said. 
Podcast host Cooper asked the former first lady, “How could a woman hold the highest seat in the government when she has less rights than half the population?” 
Obama responded, “Yeah, yeah,&#8221; before shifting to a message of encouragement. She emphasized that women should not give up just because the glass ceiling hasn’t been broken. 
“That doesn’t mean that women should roll up their sleeves and call it a day… prove us wrong. I would love that. The young women we’ve been talking to keep climbing. We need you. You may come up short, but keep going.”

Michelle Obama went viral yesterday — on Martin Luther King Day of all days — for comments about shopping habits and race.
The viral description making the rounds, however, reads, &#8220;Michelle Obama says she is mindful to try to avoid white-owned brands&#8230;&#8221;
The question is whether what she actually said matches that description.

At a superficial glance, just hearing her words verbatim, you’d probably have to say the viral description isn’t entirely fair. Nowhere does she explicitly say “don’t shop at white-owned brands.” Nowhere does she say “shop at black-owned brands and not white-owned brands.”
And in defense of Michelle Obama — and I don’t generally defend her — that’s not literally what she said.
She said that if she sees a black-owned brand and she likes their stuff, she’ll choose that brand. But she stops herself. She doesn’t say, “and I won’t buy from anyone else.” She doesn’t say, “I only do it because it’s black-owned.”
But here’s the problem: she injects race into the decision. She’s saying, “If I like their stuff, and if it’s black-owned, then I especially want to buy it.” And when she says, “If you have the money to buy Chanel, you have the money to buy everybody,” she very carefully stops short of finishing the sentence. She doesn’t say “black-owned brands.” She says “everybody.”
What she’s doing is trying to privilege the black-owned brand while avoiding the explicit consequence of that choice. She wants to be a racial identitarian when it comes to the positive act of buying — of supporting a business — but she doesn’t want to be a racial identitarian when it comes to the negative act of not shopping somewhere else.
She never says, “Don’t shop at white brands.” Instead, she says you need to shop at black brands, and everybody needs to shop at black brands — but maybe not less at white brands.
It’s a kind of gobbledygook. And that’s why, ultimately, I think the viral description is basically fair, even if it’s not perfectly precise.
It’s like the IQ bell curve meme. At one end, people say she told people not to shop at white stores. In the middle, it’s “she said to shop at black stores but also shop at white stores.” And at the other end, what she’s really saying is: shop less at white stores. Her minor premise is wrong. She says if you have the money to buy Chanel, you have the money to buy everybody.

That’s simply not true. Money is a finite resource. Just because you can afford one expensive brand doesn’t mean you have infinite money. And even if you did have infinite money, you have finite closet space. You have a finite number of dresses you’ll wear. A finite number of days in the week. Where are you going to wear all these clothes?
This is the core problem with diversity ideology. If you privilege one thing, you necessarily disadvantage another. 
This is exactly the problem with affirmative action. Everyone says, “Oh, it’s great, we should help out black people.” And yes, for the vast majority of Americans, that sounds good. Who doesn’t want to help?
But affirmative action in practice means something very concrete. There are a finite number of spots at a university. A finite number of jobs. When you give an advantage to black people simply for being black, you are necessarily disadvantageous to someone else — often white people, or Asian people in the case of college admissions. There is discrimination happening. There is an injustice that comes with that, too.
The same logic applies here. When you say, “I’m going to shop at the black brand,” you are necessarily saying that, at the margin — the last dress that fits in your closet — you are not going to shop at the white brand. You are choosing not to go into that shop, not because you dislike the dress, but because of the race of the person who owns it.
That is discrimination on the basis of race. That’s what Michelle Obama is saying — without saying it. She doesn’t want to go all the way, but there is no other conclusion you can reach from her premises.
This ties directly into why people don’t really talk about Martin Luther King Jr. the same way anymore. Part of it is that the modern Left rejects him because he was too conciliatory and too egalitarian. But the other reason is that the practical politics don’t match the rhetoric.
Dr. King famously said, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” 
And yet his successors say that in order to achieve that dream, we need affirmative action, DEI, and diversity ideology. Which, in practice, means judging people — especially white people — by the color of their skin.
Taken to its extreme, it means not shopping at white-owned businesses. And even if you agree with MLK’s premise, you are completely undermining it with these practical consequences.
So no, I don’t begrudge Michelle Obama for shopping at black-owned businesses. That’s fine. But if you’re going to say it, say it with your whole heart. Finish the sentence.
Tell people explicitly: shop at black businesses. Don’t shop at white businesses. Define what counts as ownership — 50% plus one ownership? Board seats? Stakeholders? I don’t know. But say it clearly.
And if you’re not willing to say that, then just buy the dress you like.

In an interview promoting her new book called I forgot what — that’s not the title of the book, I just forgot what the title is — the wife of the president who ruined our healthcare system spoke in that condescending, sassy black woman tone of voice that makes all of us love sassy black women so very, very much. She said, &#8220;Let me explain something to white people. Our hair comes out of our heads naturally in a curly pattern. So, when we&#8217;re straightening it to follow your beauty standards, we are trapped by the straightness. That&#8217;s why so many of us can&#8217;t swim, and we run away from the water … because we&#8217;re trying to keep our hair straight for y&#8217;all. It is exhausting, and it is so expensive, and it takes up so much time!&#8221;
Now I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking, &#8220;Oh, Klavan, you jocular junkie of jovial jokery, where do you come up with these fantastically fanciful satire ideas?&#8221; Just the notion that a woman with degrees from both Princeton and Harvard would talk to her fellow grown-ups in that condescending sassy black woman tone that just makes you want to plant a foot of whatever color right in her sassy black buttock and watch her go sailing through the air like a Cameron Dicker field goal attempt from sixty yards out, is totally unbelievable in itself. But when you add to that this ridiculous concept that an unfathomably privileged woman with a net worth of approximately a hundred gazillion Somalis would go on TV with her straightened hair that no white man gives a twitch of a rat’s ass about and tell people that the reason she can’t swim is because white people give a twitch of a rat’s ass about her hair, well, sure, it’s hilarious, but just so totally unreal.
But no, I am not making this up. The wife of the president who reintroduced racial hatred into an American culture that had all but abandoned it, has a new book out called I don’t care what it is — that’s not the title of the book, I just don’t care what it is — and she promoted the book by claiming that her obsession with how white people see her, is the fault of white people who mostly don’t see her at all.

Now, this might actually be a good sales strategy. Michelle Obama’s tone of bitter, entitled, totally unearned self-satisfaction is very popular with liberal women… for some reason. And I’m sure whatever nonsense she spews out will be greeted by those women as a thoroughly welcome change from the nonsense they&#8217;re spewing out in a tone of bitter, entitled, totally unearned self-satisfaction.
In fact, the same audience also enjoys Michelle’s nasty remarks about her husband, the former president, who would have gotten away with giving the terrorist nation of Iran a nuclear weapon if Donald Trump hadn’t bombed the living Barack out of their nuclear facilities. For instance, Michelle said there was an entire decade of her marriage in which she “couldn’t stand,” her husband, which may account for the fact that the former president, who managed to lose the war in Iraq after George W. Bush won the war in Iraq, formed a suspiciously close relationship with his male chef — until the chef mysteriously drowned in a pond on Martha’s Vineyard, probably because he was so worried about getting his hair wet, he forgot how to swim. Either that, or it was because he threatened to tell. But probably it was his hair. 
Now, just to be clear, it really is a problem that black people don’t learn how to swim. Black kids drown at around three times the rate of white kids, and it may be because white people don’t like curly hair. Or it may be because too many black kids don’t have fathers, so there’s no one to throw them into the water and listen to their mothers scream, “Oh my God, he’ll drown, and what about his hair?” while the kid happily paddles back and forth, not worrying about his hair because he has a father.
But sure, maybe it’s because of white people.

Michelle Obama is continuing her book promo tour and complaining nonstop about how she believes she’s been perceived by the public. Her latest in a long list of complaints has to do with her hair.
The former first lady discussed the topic during a conversation with Tracee Ellis Ross that was posted on YouTube over the weekend.
Obama whined that black women are “trapped” by societal pressure regarding their looks and feel compelled to keep their hair straight, meaning they can’t participate in everyday activities. 
“Let me explain something to white people. Our hair comes out of our head naturally in a curly pattern,” the 61-year-old lectured. “When we straighten it to follow your beauty standards, we are trapped by the straightness.”
“That&#8217;s why so many of us can&#8217;t swim, and we run away from the water. People won&#8217;t go to the gym because we’re trying to keep our hair straight for y&#8217;all! It&#8217;s exhausting, expensive and takes up so much time.”
Obama concluded by effusively telling society to “get out of&#8221; her hair.
“So why do we need an act … an act of law to get white folks out of our hair? Don’t tell me how to wear my hair. Don’t wonder about it. Don’t touch it. Just don’t. It just is.”

The former first lady got some negative reactions from both sides of the political aisle. 
One Threads user has been gaining traction online for her reaction to Obama’s rant.
“Dear Michelle Obama, newsflash black women do not straighten their hair because of white peoples beauty standards,” user Chanel Coco <a href="https://www.threads.com/@chanelcocofive/post/DRE3Ws3AF0d">posted</a> in reply. “As a Curly natural myself most black women straighten their hair because they choose to and it’s easier to manage for them. Let’s drop this narrative that we do anything for the white beauty standard, black women are the true beauty standard. Why get on stage and say that nonsense?”
“Dear Michelle Obama, Abandon the victimhood. There is no standard. If you don’t want to straighten your hair…then don’t,” an X user posted alongside a photo of a large Afro hairstyle. 
“I, for one, have never once cared about Michelle Obama&#8217;s hair and what she does or doesn&#8217;t do with it,” former collegiate swimmer Riley Gaines <a href="https://x.com/Riley_Gaines_/status/1989788112214741464">wrote</a> in reply, echoing what so many others were saying. 
Obama has been complaining about her hair and the way she thinks it&#8217;s viewed for years. In 2022, she said she decided to straighten her hair while her husband Barack was in office because the public was not “<a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2022/11/17/michelle-obama-black-hair-braids/">ready for</a>” her to have braids.  
Obama has been promoting her new book, “The Look,” which is touted as a reflection on her “lifelong journey with fashion, hair, and beauty.” The book tour has featured nonstop complaining about the pressure she was under, including when Obama <a href="https://x.com/EndWokeness/status/1986835412204016114">said</a> having a team for hair, makeup, and styling was a &#8220;time necessity&#8221; rather than a &#8220;luxury.”

Former First Lady Michelle Obama is discussing America&#8217;s supposed racism and complaining about her time in the White House.
During an upcoming special, Good Morning America co-host Robin Roberts reads quotes from Obama&#8217;s new book, &#8220;The Look,&#8221; which, in part, opines about the scrutiny Obama says she felt from white people in America.
&#8220;You said, &#8216;We were all too aware that as the first black couple, we couldn&#8217;t afford any missteps,'&#8221; Roberts read. &#8220;And you also say, &#8216;As a black woman, I was under a particularly white hot glare.'&#8221;
&#8220;Did you feel that?&#8221; Roberts asked Obama.
&#8220;For sure,&#8221; she answered.
&#8220;You can&#8217;t afford to get anything wrong, because you didn&#8217;t &#8212; at least until the country came to know us &#8212; we didn&#8217;t get the grace that I think some other families have gotten,&#8221; the former first lady continued.

Obama has talked about her time in the White House previously, calling it isolating and complaining that the family had to pay for their food and travel. The Obamas are reportedly worth $70 million.

The former first lady also famously suggested in 2008 that it was the first time she was proud of her country as an adult woman when the nation voted for her husband during the Democrat presidential primaries.

The internet does not have high hopes for Larry David’s newly announced project, a sketch comedy show about American history produced by the Obamas.
Variety <a href="https://variety.com/2025/tv/news/larry-david-american-history-sketch-comedy-series-hbo-1236451946/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that David will co-write the new HBO program with Jeff Schaffer, with whom he worked on the long-running comedy show “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” David will star in and co-write the six-part series, the outlet noted.
Barack and Michelle Obama are set to executive produce the project through their Higher Ground Productions company.
The show’s description says, “President and Mrs. Obama wanted to honor America’s 250th anniversary and celebrate the unique history of our nation on this special occasion…But then Larry David called.”
Former President Obama commented on the pairing, saying, “I’ve sat across the table from some of the world’s most difficult leaders and wrestled with some of our most intractable problems. Nothing has prepared me for working with Larry David.”
Social media mainly had negative reactions to the news of David and the Obamas teaming up.
“It sounds like it’s gonna be one big lecture. I hope I’m wrong,” one account <a href="https://x.com/EricBalchunas/status/1943381813772325127">predicted</a>.
“Played out. Preaching to the choir. We don&#8217;t need more lectures from Hollywood,” another <a href="https://x.com/AwardsDaily/status/1943367269498917054">wrote</a>.
“This is going to be so awful,” a third commenter on X <a href="https://x.com/imjaredz/status/1943396360692097354">predicted</a>.
“Get ready for the most unfunny experience of your life,” another <a href="https://x.com/EliseMcCue/status/1943494127145955393">replied</a>.
“Trash propaganda I’m sure,” said another, while someone else just wrote, “Yikes.” 
David has been vocal about political issues and recently had a meltdown over Bill Maher having dinner with President Donald Trump. He was so incensed that the comedian penned an op-ed for The New York Times, repeating the tired trope that Trump was literally Hitler. 
CNN Republican Scott Jennings blasted David for publishing the op-ed, saying it was just another example of Democrats attacking anyone who tried to open the lines of communication between people with differing opinions.
“This is the modern Left,” Jennings <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/cnn-republican-torches-larry-davids-dinner-with-hitler-column-attacking-bill-maher">said</a>. “It’s an attempt always to intimidate people into not ever doing it again. It’s to silence yourselves, or we’ll do it for you. That’s the purpose of this op-ed, so that the next comedian, or the next person on the American left chooses not to speak to Donald Trump.&#8221;

The “Becoming” author said that the &#8220;frustrating thing&#8221; is that the issue &#8220;has been reduced to a question of choice, as if that&#8217;s all of what women&#8217;s health is.&#8221;
&#8220;I attempted to make the argument on the campaign trail this past election that there&#8217;s just so much more at stake because so many men have no idea what women go through,&#8221; Obama said. &#8220;We haven&#8217;t been researched, we haven&#8217;t been considered, and it still affects the way a lot of men lawmakers, a lot of male politicians, a lot of male religious leaders think about the issue of choice, as if it&#8217;s just about the fetus, the baby.&#8221;

&#8220;Women&#8217;s reproductive health is about our life,” Obama added. “It&#8217;s about this whole complicated reproductive system that the least of what it does is produce life.”
She continued, “It&#8217;s a very important thing that it does, but you only produce life if the machine that&#8217;s producing it—if you want to whittle us down to a machine—if the machine is functioning in a healthy, streamlined kind of way. But there is no discussion or apparent connection between the two.&#8221;
The former first lady’s friend, OB/GYN Dr. Sharon Malone, was a guest on the episode. She agreed with Obama’s thoughts, saying, &#8220;one of the things that is disturbing&#8221; is that the &#8220;government has gotten involved in decisions that are personal and healthcare decisions.”
“It&#8217;s not just about whether someone chooses to have a pregnancy or not, but this is a situation where a woman should have control over her body—when and if to have a baby, and to decide how that pregnancy should continue,&#8221; she said.
At another point in the episode, Dr. Malone also mentioned a link between “older sperm” and “more autism.”
“They&#8217;ll never let that secret out. That may be the key behind all the defunding everything,&#8221; Michelle Obama replied. &#8220;Then old men can keep marrying 20-year-olds. It&#8217;s like, &#8216;I&#8217;ll give you the baby you want.'&#8221;

Michelle Obama is complaining again, and this time it’s about how “expensive” it was living in the White House while her husband was president.
The 61-year-old former first lady discussed her woes during an appearance this week on “The Diary of a CEO” podcast.

This isn’t the first time the “Becoming” author has mentioned the topic of paying for life during her husband’s presidency.
During a 2018 interview with Jimmy Kimmel, she again discussed the topic of paying for food.
“If you say you want some exotic fruit, ‘Yes, ma&#8217;am, we&#8217;ll get that right away,’ and then you get the bill for a peach and it&#8217;s like, that was a $500 peach!?” Obama <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AktU2gettoU">told</a> the late night host. “I would tell Barack, ‘Barack, do not express pleasure for anything unless I know how much it costs.’”
Per <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/chart-shows-net-worth-us-presidents-before-after-office-1992975">Newsweek</a>, the Obamas entered the White House with a net worth of $1.3 million, and now have grown that amount to around $70 million. This 5,300 percent increase is the second highest jump in net worth for any president in history, second only to Bill Clinton.

The former first lady discussed her decision in a newly released <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fL5q4BMln7M" target="_blank" rel="noopener">episode</a> of her podcast, “IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson,” where she spoke with actress Taraji P. Henson.
&#8220;My decision to skip the inauguration — or my decision to make choices at the beginning of this year that suited me — were met with such ridicule and criticism,&#8221; Obama explained. &#8220;People couldn&#8217;t believe that I was saying no for any other reason. They had to assume that my marriage was falling apart.&#8221;
&#8220;I&#8217;m here really trying to own my life and intentionally practice making the choice that was right for me, and it took everything in my power to not do the thing that &#8216;was right,&#8217; or was perceived as right, but do the things that was right for me,&#8221; she said of the viral rumors of impending divorce. 
Obama said she had to “basically trick” herself into creating a situation where she wasn’t able to go to the inauguration.
&#8220;It started with not having anything to wear,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I was like, if I&#8217;m not going to do this thing, I got to tell my team, I don&#8217;t even want to have a dress ready, right? Because it&#8217;s so easy to just say let me do the right thing.&#8221;
The “Becoming” author said not having anything to wear would essentially force her to make the decision she actually wanted to make in the first place.
Obama said it’s all part of her goal of mastering the “art of saying no.”
“It&#8217;s a muscle that you have to build,” she said during the episode. “And I think we suffered, because it&#8217;s almost like we started training late in life to build that muscle, right? I am just now starting to build it.”
“I want our daughters, I want the young women out there… I want my girls to start practicing different strategies for saying no,” she continued. “After all that I&#8217;ve done in this world, if I am still showing them that I have to keep- I still have to show people that I love my country, that I&#8217;m doing the right thing, that I am always setting, going high all the time, even in the face of a lot of hypocrisy and contradiction, all I&#8217;m doing is keeping that crazy bar that our mothers and grandmothers set for us.”
