Former New York Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he would focus his attention on fighting the Trump administration and spend &#8220;eight years in Washington&#8221; if he wins his election for mayor of New York City.
In a piece published by <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2025/06/03/cuomo-reportedly-under-probe-by-trumps-doj-wants-to-organize-dems-nationally-00381794">POLITICO</a> on Tuesday, Cuomo, 67, revealed his strategy to use the mayoral office to push back against Trump&#8217;s policies and campaign for Democrats to retake the House. Cuomo, who resigned from his position as governor over allegations that he sexually harassed numerous women, is being <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/justice-department-probe-takes-aim-at-andrew-cuomo-amid-his-nyc-mayoral-bid">investigated</a> by the Department of Justice for allegedly lying to Congress over a report that covered up the number of COVID deaths at nursing homes during the pandemic.
Asked how he would &#8220;handle working with the president while potentially under criminal investigation,&#8221; Cuomo replied, “I would spend eight years in Washington — go to that U.S. Conference of Mayors, go to the National Governors Association. [Trump&#8217;s] cutting Medicaid. Medicaid is not a blue-city, blue-state situation. That is in every state. That is a lot of red Congressional districts. And he could lose the House on cutting Medicaid if you organized it and got it moving.”
“You’re going to have to be a spokesperson, advocate, organizer,” he added. “This is what Medicaid means in Mississippi, this is what Medicaid means in Texas. … And you organize that, they don’t have a lot of Congressional seats left to lose.”
Trump, whose second term in office will end in less than four years, has <a href="https://www.foxbusiness.com/politics/trump-medicaid-were-not-touching-anything">promised</a> that Republicans are &#8220;not touching anything&#8221; when it comes to Medicaid benefits, adding, &#8220;All I want is one thing. Three words. We don&#8217;t want any waste, fraud or abuse. Very simple — waste, fraud, abuse.&#8221;
Cuomo has also faced scrutiny over an order he issued as governor in 2020 requiring New York nursing homes to accept patients even if they tested positive for COVID. In the interview with POLITICO, Cuomo described the DOJ investigation as &#8220;laughable&#8221; and &#8220;purely political nonsense.&#8221;
According to House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY), there is “overwhelming evidence” that Cuomo knew about an audit that undercounted COVID nursing home deaths in New York by 46%. A report from New York Attorney General Letitia James also found that Cuomo&#8217;s nursing home policy &#8220;requiring nursing homes to take in patients from hospitals who had COVID-19 and were stable enough to be discharged had likely contributed to the loss of life,&#8221; according to <a href="https://www.propublica.org/article/cuomo-undercounted-nursing-home-deaths-by-as-much-as-50-report-finds">ProPublica</a>.
Cuomo initially claimed that he was not involved in the report that undercounted COVID nursing home deaths, but now he says that he doesn&#8217;t recall reviewing the report, according to POLITICO.
“My thing is, I don’t recall. There’s no incorrect statement in, I don’t recall,” he said.
The former New York governor is currently leading in the polls to replace incumbent NYC Mayor Eric Adams, a registered Democrat running as an independent this election cycle, but Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani is receiving <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/nycs-mayoral-race-takes-sharp-turn-putting-muslim-socialist-neck-and-neck-with-cuomo">surging</a> support and cutting Cuomo&#8217;s lead in the Democratic primary, according to a PIX11/Emerson College poll released last week.
In the poll, Cuomo stands at 54.4% to Mamdani&#8217;s 45.6%, a massive swing from late March when Cuomo was ahead 38% to 10%.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) warned on Sunday that people &#8220;will literally die&#8221; if President Donald Trump&#8217;s &#8220;One Big, Beautiful Bill&#8221; passes through Congress and is enacted into law.
The alarmist statement, which the White House quickly disputed, came during an &#8220;State of the Union&#8221; interview on CNN.
&#8220;This bill actually hurts everyday Americans in order to reward billionaires,&#8221; Jeffries said. &#8220;It would strip away health care from approximately 14 million Americans. The Trump-backed “big, beautiful bill&#8221; House Republicans passed early Thursday will prohibit all federal funding for transgender procedures on both children and adults if signed into law.
During a marathon nighttime session, Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) successfully expanded a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/republicans-take-big-step-to-codify-trumps-battle-against-gender-insanity?author=Leif+Le+Mahieu&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=undefined&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=Republicans+Take+Big+Step+To+Codify+Trump’s+Battle+Against+Gender+Insanity" target="_blank" rel="noopener">provision</a> banning funding for transgender procedures for kids to include adults as well. Due to Crenshaw&#8217;s amendment, Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act, and the Children’s Health Insurance Program will no longer cover life-altering and dangerous transgender medical procedures.
&#8220;The Crenshaw Amendment will become law — and it’s long overdue,&#8221; the Texas Republican told The Daily Wire. &#8220;Gender transition procedures are the lobotomy of our generation. So-called &#8216;gender-affirming care&#8217; isn’t healthcare—it’s fringe science with no proven benefit and massive risks.&#8221;
The provision was secured by an amendment to Section 1903(i) of the Social Security Act, prohibiting funding for medically unnecessary procedures. This would mean funding would no longer go toward things like removing the breasts of women who identify as men or crafting pseudo male or female genitalia for transgender-identifying individuals.
Last week, Crenshaw introduced a provision banning the funding of the procedures on kids into the House Energy and Commerce Committee budget bill that it sent to the House Budget Committee. That provision alone would have saved $1.4 billion in taxpayer dollars, The Daily Signal <a href="https://www.dailysignal.com/2025/05/15/republicans-could-secure-about-1-4-billion-savings-through-defunding-child-transitions/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> last week.
The full House passed the budget bill 215-214 Thursday morning, including Crenshaw&#8217;s transgender funding ban for both kids and adults. President Donald Trump has cited the ban on funding of child transgender procedures as one of the reasons for Republicans to back the bill.
Senator Roger Marshall (R-KS) has pushed for a similar provision to end all taxpayer funding of transgender procedures.

Crenshaw also secured reimbursements for Texas and other border states that have borne the brunt of the illegal immigration under former President Joe Biden, and added work requirements for able-bodied adults to be eligible for Medicaid, with exceptions for disabled people or pregnant women.
Social conservatives also picked up another major win with the advancement of the budget bill, as it would end Medicaid funding for abortion giant Planned Parenthood. Terry Schilling, the president of the American Principles Project, celebrated the passage of the bill.
&#8220;The One, Big, Beautiful Bill that passed the House will end taxpayer funding for gender transition surgeries, defund Planned Parenthood and increase the Child Tax Credit – all are monumental wins for our great nation,&#8221; Schilling said. &#8220;Now it is time for the Senate to get this bill across the finish line so we can Make Families Great Again.”

On Sunday, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) insisted the GOP-led House is &#8220;on track&#8221; to pass President Donald Trump’s &#8220;one big, beautiful bill&#8221; on time despite the legislation hitting a roadblock last week.
Johnson expressed confidence in his Memorial Day deadline for the domestic policy bill during an <a href="https://video.foxnews.com/v/6373018257112" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interview</a> on &#8220;Fox News Sunday&#8221; after the House Budget Committee failed to advance <a href="https://docs.house.gov/meetings/BU/BU00/20250516/118284/BILLS-119pih.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the legislation</a> in a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trumps-one-big-beautiful-bill-hits-snag-in-critical-vote" target="_blank" rel="noopener">16-21 vote</a> on Friday amid a revolt by some Republican deficit hawks.
&#8220;We&#8217;re on track, working around the clock to deliver this nation-shaping legislation for the American people as soon as possible,&#8221; Johnson told Fox News anchor Shannon Bream. &#8220;Look, all 11 of our committees have wrapped up their work and they spent less and saved more than even we projected initially. This really is a once-in-a-generation opportunity that we have here.&#8221;
The budget panel is set to reconvene on Sunday evening and &#8220;they&#8217;ll get that through the committee,&#8221; Johnson predicted. &#8220;And the plan is to move it to the Rules Committee by midweek and to the House floor by the end of the week, so we meet our initial, our original Memorial Day deadline,&#8221; he added.
Johnson was asked to respond to some of the GOP defectors on the Budget Committee, including Reps. Ralph Norman (R-SC) and Chip Roy (R-TX), who say they want deeper and more immediate spending cuts. The speaker noted that there have been &#8220;lots of conversations&#8221; with his &#8220;good friends&#8221; and more would take place on Sunday.
&#8220;What they were complaining about or mostly concerned about I think is, for example, work requirements in Medicaid. They wanted them to be implemented earlier rather than later. Well, so do we,&#8221; Johnson said.
&#8220;The concern is — what we&#8217;re trying to work with is the ability of the states to retool their systems and ensure the verification processes, to make sure that all the new laws and all the new safeguards that we&#8217;re placing can actually be enforced,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;And so, we&#8217;re working through all those details, and we&#8217;ll get it done. But I tell you what: this is the largest spending reduction in at least three decades, probably longer. It&#8217;s historic.&#8221;
Johnson also noted that the House has been in &#8220;close coordination&#8221; with the Senate, where some Republicans have voiced reservations about the bill in its current form, since last year. The legislation that is progressing through the reconciliation process is &#8220;one that was very carefully negotiated and delicately balanced, and we hope that they don&#8217;t make many modifications to it because that will ensure its passage quickly,&#8221; he added.
&#8220;Remember, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that we need to do this by July 4th,&#8221; Johnson said. &#8220;Remember, also included in this package is a solution to the debt limit that is coming upon us, the cliff. We&#8217;ve got to get this done and get it to the president&#8217;s desk by that big celebration on Independence Day. And &#8230; I am convinced that we can.&#8221;

House Budget Chairman Jodey Arrington (R-TX) chided House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) for resorting to &#8220;fear-mongering&#8221; when discussing Medicaid in the GOP budget reconciliation budget plan.
On the latest episode of &#8220;Fox News Sunday,&#8221; anchor Shannon Bream played a clip of Jeffries warning about what Republicans intend to do with Medicaid as the House and Energy and Commerce Committee, which oversees the program, has been tasked with cutting $850 billion.
&#8220;They want to end Medicaid as we know it,&#8221; Jeffries said. &#8220;They&#8217;re going to hurt children, hurt families, hurt seniors, hurt people with disabilities, close hospitals, shut down nursing homes, and people will die.&#8221;
Arrington dismissed the top House Democrat&#8217;s dire assessment.
&#8220;The question is, will we be susceptible to the fear-mongering and the false rhetoric that you just heard from the Democrat minority leader in the House? And this is the same tired play they run and unfortunately, Republicans haven&#8217;t collectively leaned in and just done the right thing,&#8221; Arrington said.
&#8220;We will be rewarded because we&#8217;re doing this for the sustainability of these programs for the most vulnerable, as well as being fiduciaries for tax dollars,&#8221; he added. &#8220;And this moment will not happen in my political lifetime again, so we have to seize it, do the right thing and go educate and sell what we did to the American people. And the benefits that accrue, I think will come to fruition by the midterms and it will go well for our party.&#8221;
Lawmakers in Congress are working to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-2-0-in-100-days-one-big-beautiful-bill-comes-together" target="_blank" rel="noopener">devise</a> a budget reconciliation bill after passing a blueprint last month. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-2-0-in-100-days-one-big-beautiful-bill-comes-together" target="_blank" rel="noopener">suggested</a> the legislation could be complete by Independence Day.
All the details of the final bill have yet to be ironed out, but President Donald Trump has repeatedly insisted he would not touch Medicaid, along with Medicare and Social Security. Trump also has said fraud and illegal immigrants will be rooted out of the system.
The question of whether Republicans will &#8220;surrender the opportunity to actually bend the curve on entitlement spending and enact entitlement reforms&#8221; was one that, according to Arrington, has him using &#8220;if&#8221; conditional language when discussing the prospect of achieving the framework&#8217;s goals.
&#8220;Because there is a tremendous amount of waste and fraud,&#8221; he said. &#8220;In fact, the Government Accountability Office says upwards of $500 billion over the 10-year budget window just in Medicaid, you&#8217;ve got hundreds of billions siphoned out for other purposes than serving the Medicaid beneficiary,&#8221; he said. &#8220;There is no work requirement for able-bodied adults like there is in every other means-tested welfare program.&#8221;
Arrington continued: &#8220;And, in fact, Medicaid — because we give a higher federal match to able-bodied adult population, this is the Obamacare expansion population — we actually hurt access to the pregnant, blind, disabled, the most vulnerable, the poorest and sickest among our fellow Americans as a result of the structure of the program. We can save over $1.5 trillion without touching a dime of the benefit funding.&#8221;

Johnson argued that preserving resources for those who truly need them — such as young single mothers, people with disabilities, and the elderly on Medicaid — requires preventing others from &#8220;draining&#8221; these programs.
&#8220;We have got to protect and preserve that program,&#8221; Johnson said. &#8220;So we&#8217;re going to preserve the integrity of it in this process. We have lots of categories of areas where the government is too large, it does too many things. And the DOGE efforts and others have highlighted that for the American people.&#8221;

Arguments focused on whether Medicaid recipients can sue the state over the policy and if South Carolina has the authority to make guidelines about where the money can be used. 
John Bursch, a lawyer with Alliance Defending Freedom representing South Carolina, and the Trump administration argued that the state had no legal obligation to designate funds for abortion providers. 
“Disqualifying abortion providers like [Planned Parenthood] ensures that women receive comprehensive medical care,” Bursch <a href="https://www.supremecourt.gov/DocketPDF/23/23-1275/341725/20250203121003568_23-1275%20Brief%20for%20the%20Petitioner.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a> in a legal brief to the court. “It also ensures that South Carolina’s Medicaid funding goes toward improving ‘access to necessary medical care and important women’s health and family planning services’ for all women—rather than improving Planned Parenthood’s ability to free up funding to pay for abortions.”
Bursch and the Justice Department argued that the Medicaid Act does not create a right for a recipient to choose a provider. 
Nicole Saharsky, a lawyer for Planned Parenthood, argued that the state has an obligation to allocate Medicaid funding to the health care provider of the recipient&#8217;s choosing. 
“As this case comes to the court it is established that South Carolina violated the statute by denying Julie Edwards of her choice of a qualified and willing provider,” she said. “The only question is whether she can do something about it.” 
Several of the justices, including Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch, appeared skeptical of several of Saharsky’s claims. 
Bursch argued that South Carolina&#8217;s two Planned Parenthood affiliates offer little of what actually constitutes health care and were rightly excluded from the program. 
“While both entities claim to offer a range of healthcare services, they mainly offer abortions, contraception, STD testing, other screenings, and experimental puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones to those who identify as transgender, including minors,” he wrote in a filing to the court. 
South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster, who directed the state to stop sending Medicaid dollars toward Planned Parenthood, was at the Supreme Court for the hearing. 
“I&#8217;m in Washington this morning as we defend South Carolina&#8217;s right to exclude Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers from our Medicaid program,” he <a href="https://x.com/henrymcmaster/status/1907417543293444520" target="_blank" rel="noopener">posted</a> on X. 
There are <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/exclusive-rep-biggs-calls-on-doge-to-probe-planned-parenthood-ceos-exorbitant-salaries" target="_blank" rel="noopener">currently efforts</a> underway to slash federal funding for Planned Parenthood, which ended the lives of around 392,715 unborn children from 2022 to 2023, according to its most recent annual reports. During that same period, Planned Parenthood received nearly $700 million in federal funding.

Taxpayers footed duplicate payments for hundreds of thousands of Medicaid patients across the United States in recent years, totaling up to at least $4.3 billion in waste, according to a Wall Street Journal <a href="https://www.wsj.com/health/healthcare/medicaid-double-payments-insurers-states-1c091b41?mod=hp_lead_pos7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">investigation</a> published on Wednesday.
Some of the largest insurance companies in the country — such as Centene, Elevance Health, and UnitedHealth Group — received hundreds of millions of dollars each in duplicate Medicaid payments, the WSJ reported. The duplicate payments occurred after Medicaid beneficiaries moved and began receiving coverage in their new home state without being disenrolled in their previous state. Between 2019 and 2021, states, which are primarily responsible for Medicaid, made duplicate payments for around 660,000 patients each year.
According to the WSJ, over 270 insurers received duplicate payments. In all duplicate payments from 2019 to 2021, Centene received $620 million, Elevance got $346 million, and UnitedHealth Group received $298 million. The massive taxpayer waste uncovered by the WSJ was highlighted by Trump senior adviser Elon Musk, who has focused on cleaning up excessive government spending and slashing the budgets of numerous federal agencies.
&#8220;These are examples of medical fraud that the @DOGE team will fix,&#8221; Musk <a href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1905067621445497050" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a> on X, sharing a link to the Wall Street Journal article.
A spokeswoman for the federal Medicare and Medicaid agency told the WSJ that the feds are working with states to address the wasteful spending.
“Paying for a beneficiary’s Medicaid coverage in one state when that individual is already enrolled in a different state is a prime example of taxpayer dollars being mismanaged,” the spokeswoman said.
Duplicate payments drastically increased following the COVID pandemic when the federal government instituted new rules making it harder for states to disenroll Medicaid beneficiaries. In 2019, duplicate payments totaled $814 million, and in 2021, that amount increased to $2.1 billion. While states are in charge of administering Medicaid benefits within the federal guidelines, a spokeswoman for the Florida Medicaid program told the WSJ that the federal government is the only entity that has &#8220;full visibility&#8221; into duplicate enrollments.
Insurance company Centene said that it is required to continue coverage for Medicaid beneficiaries until a state disenrolls them. A message sent from a Centene supervisor to staff in February stated, “Please DO NOT close cases when you learn a member has moved out of state. If the member shows eligible and are out of state, they can still can [sic] utilize some of the benefits.”
States with some of the highest duplicate Medicaid payments included Florida, Georgia, and Indiana. In Georgia, six out of every 1,000 Medicaid payments went to cover the costs of someone who was already getting their medical bills paid for in another state.
Musk, though technically not the head of the Department of Government Efficiency, is widely viewed as the one calling the shots for President Donald Trump&#8217;s cost-cutting initiative. The DOGE team has already accessed systems at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, where Musk <a href="https://www.axios.com/2025/02/06/elon-musk-doge-health-data-cms" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> that &#8220;big money fraud is happening.&#8221;

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), speaking of the need to cut the fraud, waste, and abuse out of Medicaid, made clear that people who took advantage of the system would be found.
Johnson spoke with CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins, who asked if people would lose their Medicaid coverage due to the Trump administration’s effort to cut spending from the federal government payroll.
&#8220;The White House has made a commitment,” Johnson stated. “The President said over and over and over we&#8217;re not going to touch Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid. We&#8217;ve made the same commitment.”
“Now, that said, what we are going to do is go into those programs, and carve out the fraud, waste and abuse, and find efficiencies,” he continued. “Couple of examples. There&#8217;s about $50 billion estimated that are lost every year in Medicaid just in fraud alone. No one is for that. We&#8217;ve got to make sure we eliminate it. We have the algorithms now to do that. We have advanced technology to find it. We need to ID, provide identification for people who are Medicaid recipients, to make sure they are not illegal aliens. That&#8217;s another big carve-out that we will make, to save a lot of money.”
Johnson stated that Democrats were lying when they said the GOP was going to cut Medicaid, prompting Collins to ask, “You say Democrats are lying, when they say you&#8217;re going to cut Medicaid. The plan that you passed does instruct the House Energy and Commerce Committee to find $880 billion in cuts, right? And so how do they get $880 billion in cuts from that committee, without touching Medicaid?”
“Because E&amp;C actually has the broadest jurisdiction of any committee in Congress,” Johnson replied. “It covers everything. Energy and Commerce, the name indicates how broad the jurisdiction is. I challenge you, or anybody on your staff, do a word search for ‘Medicaid’ on the resolution that we passed last night. You will not find it. That is not part of this equation, OK? We&#8217;re talking about finding efficiencies in every program, but not cutting benefits for people who rightly deserve that.&#8221;
“Working requirements — work requirements for Medicaid, that is something that is public opinion polls almost 90 percent,” he asserted. “You don&#8217;t want able-bodied workers on a program that is intended, for example, for single mothers with two small children [who are] just trying to make it. That&#8217;s what Medicaid is for. Not for 29-year-old males sitting on their couches playing video games.”
“We&#8217;re going to find those guys, and we&#8217;re going to send them back to work. That&#8217;s what everybody supports. That&#8217;s what the Republicans are for. And by the way, we find dignity in our work. That&#8217;s going to be good for everybody,” he concluded.

President Trump is keeping his promises, moving fast and making changes in historic and amazing ways.
On Tuesday, the President of the United States, via his Office of Management and Budget (OMB), put forward a proposal that would temporarily pause $3 trillion in spending from the federal government.
The pause is temporary; much of that spending will go forward.
But the idea is to review all non-mandatory federal government spending. There&#8217;s a lot of mandatory spending in the federal budget that includes Medicare, Social Security, and many aspects of Medicaid. That will all continue, as will various payments to law enforcement, bodies, and defense.
What the order is meant to do is allow a pause for the various branches of the federal government, which are under the control of President Trump, to review spending and ensure all expenses are in accordance with the president&#8217;s wishes and with the wishes of Congress.
So, of course, the Left freaked out, claiming that President Trump is doing something deeply unconstitutional and fascistic.
But here’s the point: You do not get to expand and centralize power of the executive branch for over a century and control every aspect of Americans’ lives, as the Left has done, and then, when your political opponent takes over and uses that power in order to cut back the amount of power the executive branch would be exerting in Americans lives, get to claim that he is a dictator.
You don&#8217;t get to do that. You break it; you bought it. You built this thing, so you can&#8217;t be shocked when the person who takes over decides he&#8217;s going to use the instruments that you created to downgrade the amount of impact that those instruments have on Americans’ everyday lives.

On Tuesday, the executive office of the President, the Office of Management and Budget, put out a memo. It <a href="https://s3.documentcloud.org/documents/25506186/m-25-13-temporary-pause-to-review-agency-grant-loan-and-other-financial-assistance-programs.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stated</a>: 
<blockquote>The American people elected Donald J. Trump to be President of the United States and gave him a mandate to increase the impact of every federal taxpayer dollar. In Fiscal Year 2024, of the nearly $10 trillion that the Federal Government spent, more than $3 trillion was Federal financial assistance, such as grants and loans. Career and political appointees in the Executive Branch have a duty to align Federal spending and action with the will of the American people as expressed through Presidential priorities. Financial assistance should be dedicated to advancing Administration priorities, focusing taxpayer dollars to advance a stronger and safer America, eliminating the financial burden of inflation for citizens, unleashing American energy and Marxist equity, transgenderism, and green new deal social engineering policies is a waste of taxpayer dollars that does not improve the day-to-day lives of those we serve.</blockquote>
In other words, “We got elected, and now we&#8217;re going to implement the priorities of the American people.”
This memorandum, according to the OMB, requires federal agencies to identify and review all federal financial assistance programs and supporting activities consistent with the president&#8217;s policies and requirements. By the way, this does not include assistance provided directly for individuals. Nothing in the memo itself should be construed to impact Medicare or Social Security benefits.
So, of course, the media, en masse, lied, suggesting that individual benefits from these mandatory social spending programs were going to be impacted by the OMB order.
That&#8217;s false. It&#8217;s a lie. And it&#8217;s being promoted by people who are lying to you. According to the OMB: 
<blockquote>To implement these orders, each agency must complete a comprehensive analysis of all of their Federal financial assistance programs to identify programs, projects, and activities that may be implicated by any of the President&#8217;s executive orders. In the interim, to the extent permissible under applicable law, Federal agencies must temporarily pause all activities related to obligation or disbursement of all Federal financial assistance, and other relevant agency activities that may be implicated by the executive orders, including, but not limited to, financial assistance for foreign aid, nongovernmental organizations, DEI, woke gender ideology, and the green new deal.</blockquote>
One of the great boondoggles in American public life is non-governmental organizations being paid grants by the federal government that are going to Left-wing social organizations on a nonprofit basis.
According to the memo, “No later than February 10, 2025, agencies shall submit to OMB detailed information on any programs, projects or activities subject to this pause. Each agency must pause: (i) issuance of new awards; (ii) disbursement of Federal funds under all open awards; and (iii) other relevant agency actions that may be implicated by the executive orders, to the extent permissible by law, until OMB has reviewed and provided guidance to your agency with respect to the information submitted. OMB may grant exceptions allowing Federal agencies to issue new awards or take other actions on a case-by-case basis.”
It is a lie that this is a blanket nuking of all federal spending.
It is a way of taking a harder look at the federal spending that has grown wildly out of control — spending in which your taxpayer dollars are being used to subsidize groups that, for example, sponsor illegal immigrants or go toward social engineering of the Left, such as transgenderism.
The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and OMB found that $37 billion was about to go out the door to the World Health Organization, which is an organization that President Trump no longer wants the United States to be a part of. So that wouldn&#8217;t be in line with the president&#8217;s agenda. DOGE and OMB also found that $50 million taxpayer dollars would have gone out the door to fund condoms in Gaza, where Hamas makes them into helium balloons carrying inflammatory devices.
What we are also seeing is malicious compliance here from various people inside the so-called “Deep State,” attempts to humiliate the Trump administration. The Medicaid portal story, which was the biggest story yesterday in the mainstream media, was just silly. The portal was up and running again within hours. What likely happened is that somebody in the Medicaid system pretended they were complying with Trump, but shut down the website to attempt to create a humiliating fiasco for President Trump.
A federal judge, according to CNBC, has put a hold on Trump’s administration order. This will likely end up at the Supreme Court level, and that will determine presumably exactly how far empowerments can go.
It’s a fight worth fighting.

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has aims worthy of its mastermind, but plans for the government-slashing commission outlined so far have raised doubts about the project’s efficacy.
Elon Musk, the wealthiest man in the world, originally suggested <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/heres-how-elon-musks-department-of-government-efficiency-will-work" target="_blank" rel="noopener">DOGE</a> during a wide-ranging conversation with President-elect Donald Trump on an X space. With Trump to take office next month, he has tasked Musk alongside entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy with heading DOGE and crafting a report for ways to reduce government size and spending by July 4, 2026.
The DOGE will be set up as an outside adviser group working closely with the White House to identify inefficiency in the federal government and recommend fixes, primarily through cuts, repeals, and reorganization. Musk has set an ambitious goal: cutting federal spending by $2 trillion, roughly a quarter of the federal budget, in addition to major reductions in regulations.
The project has generated excitement among conservatives who have long called for drastic action on the expanding size of government. Some supporters of Musk and Ramaswamy’s goals for the project are nonetheless skeptical that their strategy will create meaningful and lasting savings or efficiency.
“I’ve spent two decades thinking and writing about the administrative state and how I think it presents an enormous constitutional problem,” Hillsdale College politics professor Joseph Postell told The Daily Wire. “The fact that Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy are talking about the things that I&#8217;ve been talking to my students about for 10 or 20 years, I&#8217;m thrilled about this.”
“I&#8217;m coming from a perspective of somebody who&#8217;s highly sympathetic to what they want to do, but who doesn&#8217;t want to see them waste their opportunity,” he added.
Musk and Ramaswamy in an op-ed in <a href="https://federalnewsnetwork.com/commentary/2023/05/opening-up-federal-contracting-jobs-for-more-americans/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Wall Street Journal</a> in November outlined DOGE’s approach.
“The two of us will advise DOGE at every step to pursue three major kinds of reform: regulatory rescissions, administrative reductions and cost savings. We will focus particularly on driving change through executive action based on existing legislation rather than by passing new laws,” they wrote.
But for their recommendations to turn into lasting realities, Congress must be involved, according to Postell. And working with Congress, DOGE has the opportunity to rewrite the most expansive laws passed by Congress that have effectively given bureaucrats wide-ranging authority to regulate Americans&#8217; lives.
“I think you need laws passed by Congress that restructure the administrative state and sort of revise the authorities granted to it,” Postell said. “First and foremost, it would be great to have an enormous reform of the Administrative Procedure Act where we very clearly state what agencies can do, what they can&#8217;t do, and how they have to go about doing what it is that they do.”
Postell cited reforming laws such as the Clean Water Act and Clean Air Act, as well. Reforming major legislation would limit its scope while, in effect, repealing massive swaths of regulations crafted under the prior laws.
As the project stands, however, Musk and Ramaswamy seem to prefer executive action rather than working with allies in Congress to battle against an expansive bureaucratic regime. Here’s a breakdown of the DOGE plan to reform the federal government:
<h3>Spending</h3>
Musk has said he can cut the annual federal budget by $2 trillion. Asked about the odds of DOGE being able to accomplish that, Postell placed the likelihood at “less than a percent.”
Part of the problem lies in what DOGE can realistically recommend cuts to. Major entitlements such as Medicaid and Social Security, which Trump has campaigned against cutting, make up 46% of the <a href="https://www.cato.org/blog/where-did-tax-dollars-go-federal-budget-breakdown">budget</a>. National defense, unlikely to be cut under Trump, is another 12%. Interest on the national debt is another 8%.
As the options for cuts begin to narrow down, Musk’s $2 trillion target looks increasingly over-optimistic. Musk and Ramaswamy could recommend <a href="https://www.usaspending.gov/explorer/agency#:~:text=You%20are%20viewing%20FY%202024,below%20to%20start%20your%20exploration.&amp;text=Department%20of%20Health%20and%20Human,0...&amp;text=Unreported%20Data*:%20Unreported%20amounts,how%20you%20use%20the%20data!" target="_blank" rel="noopener">gutting</a> the departments of Agriculture, Education, and Transportation and not account for half of the goal.

Outside of entitlements and the military, Trump’s administration could still make significant cuts, if not enough to meet Musk’s goal, according to Postell. But of the coalition that put Trump in the White House, only a small portion of that is dedicated to slashing spending, presenting DOGE with a problem of lack of political support for its mission.
“It actually kind of reflects a little bit more of the older Republican party, more of the Reagan side of the Republican party, which was really focused on shrinking government,” Postell said. “Part of what’s made Trump so successful is that he’s moved away from that concept – that kind of conservative, slashing government approach.”
<h3>Regulation</h3>
In its aim to cut regulation and free the American economy from onerous or duplicitous rules, Musk and Ramaswamy cited two Supreme Court rulings they say will provide the basis for their crusade against red tape: West Virginia v. Environmental Protection Agency decided in 2022 and Loper Bright v. Raimondo decided in 2024.
In the EPA case, the court decided the major questions doctrine, ruling that government bureaucrats cannot make regulations over “major” policy areas without explicit approval from Congress. In Raimondo, the court overturned the Chevron doctrine, meaning that courts no longer must defer to bureaucratic interpretations of Congressionally-approved laws and rules.
“Together, these cases suggest that a plethora of current federal regulations exceed the authority Congress has granted under the law,” Musk and Ramaswamy wrote in WSJ.
It’s doubtful whether those cases will work for DOGE the way Musk and Ramaswamy predict. As far as West Virginia may be concerned, it’s unclear how many regulations could be affected. 
“A lot of the existing rules really have already survived that kind of scrutiny,” Postell said. “So, I&#8217;m not sure how this authorizes a retroactive look back.”
Raimondo may actually cause more headaches for DOGE than Chevron would have. Under Chevron, the Trump administration could use the ruling to assert its own narrow interpretation of a law and roll back regulations. Under Raimondo, courts have authority to interpret laws anew.
“Now, there&#8217;s actually not going to be deference given to the Trump administration when, you know, Greenpeace or the NRDC inevitably sues the EPA over that,” Postell said. “In a strange way, the death of Chevron is going to be a problem for the Trump administration&#8217;s regulatory reform effort. It’s not a tool in their toolbox, it’s actually a tool that’s going to be used against them.”
<h3>Bureaucracy</h3>
Within the sprawling federal bureaucracy, there is undoubtedly much fat that can be cut while maintaining the government’s current level of function. Toward that end, Ramaswamy has suggested some policies that will likely provide substantial results, such as requiring all federal employees to work in office five days a week where appropriate. A recent survey <a href="https://federalnewsnetwork.com/commentary/2023/05/opening-up-federal-contracting-jobs-for-more-americans/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">found</a> that just 6% of bureaucrats currently hold that schedule.
That said, reductions in the federal workforce is arguably one of the least impactful of DOGE’s aims. Without the cuts to regulations and federal spending, reductions in the federal workforce would result in very little worthwhile change.
“A lot of people don&#8217;t really want governmental efficiency,” Postell said. “You know, tyranny is not easier to swallow simply because it’s efficient.”
While the extent of DOGE’s recommendations for cuts to the federal bureaucracy have yet to be seen, deep cuts could result in a different set of problems if government work is shifted from bureaucrats to private contractors.
Private contractors already make up the majority of the federal government’s workforce. According to one <a href="https://federalnewsnetwork.com/commentary/2023/05/opening-up-federal-contracting-jobs-for-more-americans/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">estimate</a>, the number of federal contractors nearly doubles the number of federal employees: 3.7 million contractors to 2 million employees. While a smaller federal footprint would generally be positive, if that reduction resulted in more duties turned over to private contractors, the benefits are more questionable, according to Postell.
“If it starts to move towards a more privatized government, you could have serious concerns that you&#8217;ve actually made a problem worse because that&#8217;s a less accountable government, maybe, even than one where you know which department and which employees are behind whatever is happening,” Postell said.

The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/supreme-court" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Supreme Court</a> on Wednesday agreed to hear South Carolina’s case against Planned Parenthood, which seeks to cut the abortion giant&#8217;s Medicaid funding.

Governor Henry McMaster, a Republican, <a href="https://governor.sc.gov/sites/governor/files/Documents/Executive-Orders/Executive-Order-2018-21.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">issued</a> an executive order directing the state&#8217;s Medicaid agency to take abortion providers off its “family planning” services list.
State law prohibits Medicaid funds from being used for abortions except in cases where the mother&#8217;s life is in danger or in cases of rape or incest. The Medicaid funds Planned Parenthood gets go toward the abortion provider&#8217;s other services, such as STD testing.
However, McMaster <a href="https://apnews.com/article/supreme-court-planned-parenthood-abortion-63c051a7f3c75b1af53805239a044014" target="_blank" rel="noopener">argued</a> that any public money given to Planned Parenthood effectively “results in the subsidy of abortion.”
&#8220;The State of Carolina has a strong culture and longstanding tradition of protecting and defending the life and liberty of unborn children,&#8221; the governor wrote in his order.

The Supreme Court will take up the state&#8217;s appeal of a lower court&#8217;s ruling that found federal law lets Medicaid patients choose their providers.
South Carolina currently bans abortion around six weeks or when cardiac activity is detected, with exceptions for the life and physical health of the mother, rape and incest up to 12 weeks, and fetal diagnoses dubbed “incompatible” with life.
At the time of McMaster&#8217;s executive order, abortion was still legal in South Carolina up to 22 weeks.
“Taxpayer dollars shouldn’t be used to fund facilities that choose to profit off abortion, and South Carolina is free to use its limited funding to subsidize life-affirming health care,” John Bursch, an attorney with Alliance Defending Freedom, which is representing the state’s Medicaid agency, <a href="https://scdailygazette.com/2024/12/18/us-high-court-to-decide-if-sc-can-take-planned-parenthood-off-medicaid-list-for-non-abortion-care/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> Wednesday after the Supreme Court decided to take up the case.
&#8220;Taxpayer dollars should never fund abortion providers like Planned Parenthood. In 2018, I issued an executive order to end this practice in South Carolina. I&#8217;m confident the U.S. Supreme Court will agree with me that states shouldn&#8217;t be forced to subsidize abortions,&#8221; McMaster <a href="https://x.com/henrymcmaster/status/1869442904563085475" target="_blank" rel="noopener">posted</a> on X in response to the court&#8217;s decision to hear the case.
The case will be argued in the spring.
South Carolina&#8217;s case is one of several cases on abortion that the Supreme Court has taken up since Roe vs. Wade, the case that legalized abortion nationwide, was overturned in 2022.
In June, the court <a href="https://apnews.com/article/supreme-court-abortion-mifepristone-fda-4073b9a7b1cbb1c3641025290c22be2a#" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ruled</a> to continue to allow access to the abortion pill, which is used for the majority of abortions.
