Hollywood star Woody Harrelson torched Dr. Anthony Fauci, former Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and said Fauci has done some “extraordinary evil s**t” and knows it.
During his recent appearance on “The Joe Rogan Experience” <a href="https://x.com/CollinRugg/status/1893765243815526484">podcast</a>, the 63-year-old actor and host both said they were hopeful that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. — who has been sworn in as President Donald Trump’s Secretary of Health and Human Services — could right some of the wrongs they attributed to Fauci.
“Bobby (RFK Jr.), I really hope he’s able to do some good because he’s certainly a man on a mission,” Harrelson said. “And a man who cares deeply. And I think really heroic how much he stood up for things that he didn’t need to talk about … he just took one arrow after the other over it.”
Rogan admitted he once bought into the “propaganda” against Kennedy and said that he too used to think RFK Jr. was a “kook.” He said then he read his book “The Real Anthony Fauci: Bill Gates, Big Pharma, and the Global War on Democracy and Public Health (Children’s Health Defense)” and changed his mind.

&#8220;If all these things [RFK] is saying about Anthony Fauci during the AIDS crisis, if that&#8217;s not true, why is he not getting sued?&#8221; the podcast host said. 
&#8220;I would sue the f**k outta him if he lied about me and said that I was vaccinating foster kids with experimental drugs that were killing them,” he added.
&#8220;The Hunger Games” star criticized the fact that “Fauci was able to get these principal investigators from like all these respectable colleges and put them on these committees&#8230;&#8221;
“He [Fauci] started with the AZT thing [to fight AIDS],” the three-time Oscar nominee said. “And, you know, AZT was known to be a highly toxic, really ineffective drug, and of course, that was the one they picked.”
“And so they started using that again, and I don’t know how many people that killed,” he added. “That killed friends of mine. AZT was very toxic and they finally had to yank it. And now they use different chemical cocktails, but like, Fauci did some extraordinarily evil s**t. And he knows what he did.”
The podcast host pointed out that the Matthew McConaughey movie “Dallas Buyers Club” dealt with the AIDS epidemic — and said that the villain in the movie was based on Fauci.
“That was about people trying to seek alternative treatments to deal with AIDS … that’s Fauci, that’s AZT,” Rogan said. “Magic Johnson got on AZT and it was killing him and he got off of it.”
Harrelson pointed out that Johnson is still alive, suggesting it was because he stopped taking the drug.

Hollywood is on fire, literally and figuratively.
Dueling strikes shut the industry down in 2023 and it hasn’t fully bounced back. The pandemic chased viewers to the comfort of their couches, pummeling the theatrical experience. YouTube creators are luring eyeballs away from network TV at a fraction of the price point, as are social media platforms and video games.
There’s no better time for a Hollywood Plan B. Could that involve the Lone Star State?
Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey sure think so.
The “True Detective” alums joined forces for <a href="https://x.com/McConaughey/status/1884652597618872439" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a new video campaign</a> tied to Texas-based filmmaking. They’re playing their iconic characters from the HBO series, but this isn’t fiction.

It’s a bona fide plea for more Texas movie making. The Oscar-winning actor from “Dallas Buyers Club” starts the pitch.
“Hollywood is a flat circle … this industry is like somebody’s memory of an industry, and the memory’s fading. I’m talking about a whole new hub for film and television. A renaissance. A rebirth.”
“A small fraction of Texas budget surplus to turn this state into the new Hollywood,” Harrelson adds.
“If all these other states are going to offer an incentive, then that’s where we’re going to keep going. I just wish we could bring some of these productions home to Texas.” So says fellow Oscar winner Renée Zellweger.
The spot also features fellow Hollywood heavyweights like Billy Bob Thornton and Dennis Quaid.

This isn’t happening in a vacuum.
California has been shedding TV and film projects for some time. States like Georgia and New Mexico teem with new projects, generated in large part by tax-friendly policies and rebates.
That doesn’t factor in the high price of living in Gov. Gavin Newsom’s struggling state. Have you filled up a car in California these days?
The timing couldn’t be better on the cultural front. Entertainment production no longer caters to the coasts. Joe Rogan moved the comedy epicenter from New York City to Austin, Texas, with his Comedy Mothership club and its unwoke ethos.

Stand-up superstars like Tom Segura, Ron White, Tony Hinchcliffe now call Austin home. Others, like Tyler Fischer and Roseanne Barr, also decamped to the state, at least part time.
To many, Hollywood is no longer exclusively thought of as the sole movie-making hub. Other cities and states are leaning into that new normal.
Nashville productions are on the rise, from Daily Wire exclusives to projects via Universal Music Group Nashville. The latter just created a new production arm with plans to create film and TV projects. Oscar winners Jamie Lee Curtis and Nicole Kidman are shooting Amazon Prime’s “Scarpetta,” an episode drama in Nashville <a href="https://wbkr.com/nicole-kidman-jamie-lee-curtis-to-film-crime-series-in-nashville/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">through February</a>.
Superstar Mark Wahlberg wants to make Las Vegas “Hollywood East.” The “Flight Risk” star hopes to spearhead <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/mark-wahlberg-wants-las-vegas-210015408.html?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAN2tOcOAJ2iSv_bSzRVvQNxMSfDXob7TqLVBSfH-dAbH2LxgVos7cZmbLJP9TXKzjd8Dc5xVU61GoT2BkUlWfHSha5E0Pzy4WJGT5aTGgu1M7N2s7DI5UKFFL82FVLnsyIiSQGObDFD8LL-8F5V9xScC2W3v_SZ778RVSQj6u_yy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a $1.8 billion Sony studio</a> in the state to compete with Hollywood.
“I think ultimately that would be the goal. <a href="https://www.fox5vegas.com/2024/10/18/mark-walhberg-wants-california-movie-studios-follow-his-move-nevada/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">They all used to make movies right there in LA</a> and people don’t do it anymore,” Wahlberg said.
He’ll have some company.
Warner Bros. Discovery also has its eye on Las Vegas. Warner Bros. Studios Nevada, a plan dependent on the state’s tax credit structure, would bring more filmmaking to the state.
So why not Texas? 
The state offers endless vistas worthy of a cinematic closeup. Small Town USA? Check! Big, bustling urban centers like Dallas? Covered. Texas’s red-state policies mean cost-of-living issues won’t upend productions, and it’s far less dysfunctional than the Golden State.
And top-tier stars are singing the state’s praises in a very public forum. When a Dennis Quaid, a star for nearly 50 years, suggests a state needs a close-up, people should listen.
Previously, Owen Wilson and Glen Powell joined with McConaughey and Thornton to buoy Texas filmmaking with a similar 2023 video.

<a href="https://variety.com/2024/film/markets-festivals/yellowstone-mayor-of-kingstown-texas-film-production-1236004446/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The infrastructure is in place</a>, too. The state approved a $200 million grant last year, that runs through August, to entice more projects. That got Taylor Sheridan’s attention.
The biggest name in episodic TV chose Texas for both his home and a sprawling real estate enterprise planning to host film and TV productions down the short road. His latest smash, Paramount+’s “Landman,” filmed in Fort Worth, Texas.
<a href="https://www.dallasnews.com/arts-entertainment/2025/01/31/matthew-mcconaughey-woody-harrelson-push-for-more-texas-film-incentives-in-ad/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sheridan made a personal pitch for Texas</a> last fall before the state’s Senate Finance Committee.
“We desperately need the employees. I would much, much, much rather hire a Texas local than fly in somebody from another state,” Sheridan said.
Some Texas-based Republicans have split feelings about the Hollywood influx. Newsweek reports several officials <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/matthew-mcconaugheys-push-hollywood-texas-divides-republicans-2023842" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recoiled at the thought</a> of Hollywood’s progressive values inundating the state.
Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller put the brakes on the plan via X. He’s all for Texas-based productions but <a href="https://x.com/MillerForTexas/status/1884987688182268146" target="_blank" rel="noopener">opposes tax rebates to make it possible</a>.
Hollywood is dying. Productions can&#8217;t get out of California fast enough. Texas will benefit without subsidizing the folks that brought us woke, anti-Christian bigotry, socialism, transgenderism, etc.
Hollywood diehards may resist the Texas two-step. Loyalists could prefer to bring production back to La La Land, especially to help those impacted by the wildfires. Others may rebuke red-state values infecting their progressive industry.
Pragmatism may rule the day. If major stars like Quaid, McConaughey and Zellweger want more Texas-based shoots, and the costs aren’t prohibitive, we may be hearing, “Action!” more and more in the Lone Star State.

In the clip “True to Texas” on Wednesday on <a href="https://x.com/McConaughey/status/1884652597618872439">X</a>, McConaughey recreated a scene from “True Detectives” with actors Woody Harrelson, Dennis Quaid, Billy Bob Thornton, and Renee Zellweger, who join in the fight to bring top film and TV productions home to Texas.
“Hollywood is flat circle, Wood,” McConaughey said as his character from the hit HBO series. &#8220;Round and round, like a record with the sound off … I want to change the tune. This industry is like somebody’s memory of an industry. And the memory’s fading.”

Harrelson then asked, “Why should all these other states take advantage of this investment, but not Texas. … Ain’t all that money like corporate welfare for big Hollywood studios?”
“No, Wood, it’s not,” McConaughey replied. “Real Texas business owners and citizens see every dollar spent from this incentive put $4 back into the state of Texas.”
“It’s time for Texas to become the home for telling stories that people want to see and hear,” he added. “So, what do you say, Texas legislature? You don’t like what Hollywood’s been dishing, let’s take it up with the kitchen.”

Last week, the Texas senate <a href="https://www.ltgov.texas.gov/2025/01/22/lt-gov-dan-patrick-statement-on-the-state-budget-filed-in-the-texas-senate/">filed a budget</a> that included $498 million to revamp the Texas Film Incentive, in order to make &#8220;Texas the movie capital of the world,” The <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/matthew-mcconaughey-woody-harrelson-true-detective-ad-texas-1236121499/?utm_source=instagram&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=feed">Hollywood Reporter</a> noted.
“My budget team and I have worked alongside Chair Huffman and the Senate Finance Committee to ensure the Senate’s state budget reflects the conservative priorities of Texans,&#8221; Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick <a href="https://www.lonestarlive.com/news/2025/01/texas-senate-looks-to-uplift-states-film-industry-with-498-million-proposition.html">said</a> of the budget proposal. “[Texas] SB [Senate Bill] 1 maintains our promise to Texans by keeping our state on a conservative path to greater prosperity.”

Matthew McConaughey Drops Star-Studded Ad Calling On Texas To Become Film/TV Hub

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/matthew-mcconaughey">Matthew McConaughey</a> admitted he considered quitting Hollywood altogether — and finding another vocation like teaching — during a time in his career when he was only getting romantic comedy roles.
Speaking to actor Glen Powell for <a href="https://www.interviewmagazine.com/film/glen-powell-and-matthew-mcconaughey-tell-the-truth-about-movie-stardom">Interview magazine</a>, the 54-year-old actor said he left Hollywood for two years to figure out what he wanted to do when he only seemed able to get roles in movies like the “Wedding Planner” and “How to Lose a Guy in 10 days.”
&#8220;I’ve usually zigged when I felt like Hollywood wanted me to zag,&#8221; McConaughey said. &#8220;When I had my rom-com years, there was only so much bandwidth I could give to those, and those were some solid hits for me. But I wanted to try some other stuff. Of course, I wasn’t getting it, so I had to leave Hollywood for two years.&#8221;
&#8220;Dude it was scary. I had long talks with my wife about needing to find a new vocation,&#8221; he added.&#8221;‘I think I’m going to teach high school classes. I think I’m going to study to be a conductor. I think I’m going to go be a wildlife guide.’&#8221;

“The Gentlemen” star said leaving was scary but looking back he can see that the departure was necessary to make Hollywood miss him.

“Over that one weekend, 99 noes became 99 yeses. I was like, ‘What? Three days ago, I’d have done any of these! And now you’re asking me which one I want to do?’ he added. “It was a hell of a shocking thing.&#8221;
After his last rom-com in the 2009 “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past,” he started getting more serious roles like “The Lincoln Lawyer” in 2011 and won his first Oscar in 2014 for his part in the &#8220;Dallas Buyers Club.&#8221; 
Powell, the “Top Gun: Maverick” star recently talked about moving out of the “fishbowl” to be closer to his family because he’s gotten to “this point in Hollywood” that he can leave, saying it’s like he’s “earned the ability to go back” to his family and home in Texas, as previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/top-gun-star-explains-why-hes-moving-away-from-hollywood-after-15-years">reported</a>.
McConaughey, who lives in Texas with his wife Camila and their three kids, told Powell he could relate.
&#8220;Once I felt like I was in Hollywood, I felt comfortable enough to go back home,” the actor said. “You can really be an honest observer of humans in Texas.”
“It’s tough to do that in Hollywood, because everyone’s a voyeur,” he added. “Instead of going someplace to eat, a lot of Hollywood’s going to that place to see who’s coming to that place to eat.&#8221;

The &#8220;Dallas Buyers Club&#8221; star said just because they were not always in agreement, that didn&#8217;t mean they would ever &#8220;quit serving&#8221; each other.
&#8220;I&#8217;m still going to serve my lady [at] my steak sushi because I know she loves it, even though we may be in a disagreement,&#8221; he added, noting that &#8220;a sweet food&#8221; can also &#8220;de-escalate some things, even if it&#8217;s a nice piece of chocolate or some ice cream.&#8221; 
McConaughey said little things really make a difference in marriage, <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/matthew-mcconaughey-isnt-pulling-parachute-marriage-when-has-disagreement-wife-camila?intcmp=tw_fnc">Fox News</a> noted.
&#8220;I don&#8217;t make my tea as good as you,&#8221; Matthew said to his wife, the outlet noted. &#8220;But the fact that you make my tea and serve me my tea in the morning makes me go: &#8216;It just tastes better.'&#8221;
&#8220;Even if you and I are in a disagreement, the fact that you still make my tea in the morning, serving my tea &#8230; it&#8217;s the difference between being married and dating,&#8221; he added.
&#8220;Yeah. Trust me, ladies, some mornings I do not want to serve that tea,&#8221; Alves quipped. 
&#8220;But she still will make it for me anyway!&#8221; McConaughey replied.
&#8220;[When you&#8217;re] dating somebody and suddenly you get in disagreement [you think] &#8216;oh, this is a sign of things to come. Better get out now,'&#8221; he added. &#8220;But you&#8217;re married and you disagree. You&#8217;re like, &#8216;I&#8217;m not pulling the parachute. This is part of it. A judge issued the protective order for the 53-year-old actor after he told the court that the woman had inundated him with &#8220;unhinged letters, emails, and frivolous lawsuits designed to lure me into court,&#8221; the <a href="https://theblast.com/547879/matthew-mcconaughey-granted-5-year-restraining-order-unhinged-obsessed-fan/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Blast</a> reported.
&#8220;These lawsuits were designed to lure me to court and come into contact with me,&#8221; McConaughey said, adding that the obsessed female believed the two were involved in a romantic relationship.

He told the court one of the events he was specifically worried about was after she purchased a ticket that would have &#8220;afforded a photo opportunity which would place her in close contact with&#8221; him.
&#8220;She has purchased tickets to attend promotional events I am scheduled to appear at the week of 9/11/23,&#8221; he added. &#8220;She is delusional and poses a threat to all that attend.&#8221;
The &#8220;Interstellar&#8221; star also told the court that he had the person investigated and through that &#8220;investigation and her own admission, I learned that (she) has a past history of mental health issues and has spent time at a mental health hospital. My representatives have acted professionally and have advised her to stop contacting me,&#8221; the Blast noted.

&#8220;Notwithstanding clear requests, she continues to send letters, emails, and other disturbing communications to my team as well as other third parties who are concerned about her next moves,&#8221; he added. &#8220;This includes her intentions when she shows up at public events at their establishments.&#8221;

Retired talk show host Maury Povich said he&#8217;d be willing to make a comeback if actors Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson would agree to take a DNA test and confirm once and for all whether they are half brothers.

News interview and said he&#8217;d happily come out of retirement to solve the mystery.
&#8220;We could do primetime, &#8216;DNA: Maury’s Back With Woody and Matthew.&#8217; I’ll even get my showtime color back in my hair,&#8221; Povich said, promising to come out of retirement temporarily if the two actors agreed. &#8220;Woody’s got my number. I’m ready.&#8221;

At the time, McConaughey said he wasn&#8217;t sure he&#8217;d want to take a test to find out for sure whether he and Harrelson actually shared a father. &#8220;It’s a little harder for me because he’s asking me to take a chance to go, &#8216;Wait a minute, you’re trying to tell me my dad may not be my dad after 53 years of believing that?&#8217; I got a little more skin in the game.&#8221;
But by the time Povich posed the question, the &#8220;Lincoln Lawyer&#8221; star appeared to have come around to the idea. &#8220;I don’t know if we’re going to be calling you to do it on your show, but I like the way you’re thinking,&#8221; he said.

On the topic of the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/celebrities" target="_blank" rel="noopener">celebrity</a> possibly running for office in the future, Behar <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQLcw_h4qBM" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>, &#8220;Do you think you can get elected in Texas, being <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/gun-control" target="_blank" rel="noopener">anti-gun</a>?&#8221;
McConaughey took a pause and repeated the question out loud before responding, &#8220;One thing about me and politics is, to give you a direct statement right there is me playing a game I&#8217;m not interested in playing.”
Behar told him not to say anything if he didn&#8217;t want to.
Co-host Sunny Hostin chimed in later in the segment, saying, &#8220;I did want to say that I&#8217;ve done a lot of research in terms of your advocacy, and I don&#8217;t know that you&#8217;re anti-gun, I think you&#8217;re pro-gun responsibility and legislation.”
The 53-year-old Uvalde, Texas, native has been outspoken about advocating for gun reform, especially following the school shooting in his hometown in 2022.
McConaughey previously argued that gun control didn’t have popular support because of how it was framed. During an August interview on ABC News&#8217;s &#8220;This Week,&#8221; he discussed comments he made at a White House press conference following the Uvalde school shooting.

“Control sounds like a mandate and nobody wants a mandate,” he continued. “No one wants to be controlled. But responsibility is still something that we can all go, yeah, ‘I’ll take responsibility,’ and a lot of the far-right or the Republicans, they almost feel like responsibility is a value that they have ownership of and it’s a sense of almost pride and honor to be responsible.”
During a 2018 March For Our Lives rally, the “Interstellar” actor said gun owners should “take one for the team” and voluntarily give up some of their gun rights. 
“One, let’s ban the assault weapons for civilians. This is a no-brainer,” McConaughey said at the time. “And to my friends out there, that are responsible owners of these assault weapons that they use for recreation, please let’s take one for the team and set it down.”

&#8220;My mom&#8217;s 91 and she said, &#8216;That&#8217;s not just for kids. You even reminded me of some things in there,'&#8221; the superstar actor said.
&#8220;Just being a dad, I mean, you&#8217;re thinking about your kids all the time [and] I think that afternoon, I&#8217;d been having conversations with my children about certain new things that they were crossing for the first time or, &#8216;Well, this happened and I&#8217;m not sure how to feel about it. And I wanted to do this, but I felt I needed to do this, and I was confused,'&#8221; he added.
&#8220;Evidently it was in my subconscious … Once I knocked all the couplets down in the rhythm, it sort of wrote itself,&#8221; McConaughey continued.
The &#8220;Dallas Buyers Club&#8221; star said his kids have already given their seal of approval.
&#8220;They liked it,&#8221; McConaughey said. &#8220;Vida is very visual, so she loved the pictures that [illustrator] Renée [Kurilla] did. I ran it by my kids. We went through scenarios [explored] in it.&#8221;
The Hollywood star said one of the parts that they connected to was a section that read,  &#8220;Just because you&#8217;re wailing, doesn&#8217;t mean you&#8217;re a crier. Just because you lied, doesn&#8217;t mean you’re a liar.&#8221;
&#8220;We talked about that one quite a bit because my kids have seen it,&#8221; he added. &#8220;We do it all the time: We label somebody. Somebody fibs to you: &#8216;Oh, you&#8217;re a liar.&#8217; Well, that&#8217;s a big blanket to put on somebody. If you call someone a liar, they get defensive: &#8216;Whoa, my whole being? You mean I&#8217;m all about untruths?'&#8221;
&#8220;But if you say, &#8216;No, that was a lie,&#8217; that person has the choice now to go, &#8216;I know, I&#8217;m sorry about that,'&#8221; McConaughey continued.

&#8220;We lived in Malibu for many years and having the paparazzi outside our door every day — every single day — when that becomes your normal, you don&#8217;t realize how much that&#8217;s actually affecting the things you do until you actually leave and get out of it,&#8221; the superstar actor&#8217;s wife continued. &#8220;The kids get to have a private way of growing up. So from that perspective, it was very important.&#8221;
Alves also talked about the challenges of making time for date nights with her husband, which she said sometimes means the couple just steals away for a minute to reconnect.
&#8220;Sometimes it&#8217;s as simple as a staycation,&#8221; Camila said. &#8220;Or, &#8216;I&#8217;m sending the kids over to a family member, so we can stay home and have a drink together.’

Model Camila Alves recently revealed just how far her mother-in-law went to &#8220;test&#8221; her when she and Matthew McConaughey first started seeing each other.
Alves made the revelation during Tuesday&#8217;s episode of the &#8220;Southern Living: Biscuits and Jam&#8221; <a href="https://www.southernliving.com/biscuits-and-jam-camila-alves-mcconaughey-s4-ep19-7574422" target="_blank" rel="noopener">podcast</a>, saying that although she now has a very close relationship with Mary McCabe, things weren&#8217;t always as easy between them.
&#8220;She did all these things when I first came in the picture, right? She was really testing me,&#8221; Alves said. &#8220;I mean, really testing me.&#8221;
&#8220;She would call me by all of Matthew’s ex-girlfriends’ names, she would start speaking Spanish with me in a very broken way, kind of putting [me] down a bit. I mean, all kinds of stuff,&#8221; Alves — who hails from Brazil — explained.
Alves said that things finally came to a head when the two traveled together to Istanbul — a trip she had to take for work – and had invited McCabe to come along in an effort to reach out to her.
&#8220;I got a job to go to Istanbul to go do a fashion show there. And that job, comes with the perks of you get another first class ticket, you get another night&#8217;s hotel room, you get this, you get the driver. And I was like, &#8216;Ma Mac, you&#8217;re gonna come with me.&#8217; The whole way there, the whole plane ride to Istanbul, she was telling me all these stories and putting all these things in my head. Enough that, when we landed, I was like, &#8216;Okay, all right. Let me buckle up. Let me get ready for this situation.'&#8221;
It wasn&#8217;t until a few days into the trip that she saw another side of &#8220;Ma Mac,&#8221; and suddenly everything changed. &#8220;About day three, I was taking her to her room, and she got into this whole other thing that it&#8217;s not my place to share, and she starts crying, and I&#8217;m like, &#8216;Oh my gosh!&#8217; You know, &#8216;Ma Mac!&#8217; and feeling so sorry. And as I put her to bed, I look at her and I&#8217;m like, &#8216;Oh my gosh. She&#8217;s full of s***.'&#8221;

Now you’re in.'&#8221;
&#8220;You passed the test,&#8221; interviewer Sid Evans replied with a laugh, and Alves agreed.
&#8220;All she wanted was for me to fight back. And then from that day on, that night on, we have the most amazing relationship, and I have so much respect for her. She has so much respect for me. I mean, it can get tricky sometimes, you know? But we always end with a good laugh and a joke,&#8221; she said.

Camila Alves Says Matthew McConaughey's Mom 'Tested' Her, Called Her By His Ex's Names

Actor Matthew McConaughey said during an interview over the weekend that he thinks that gun control activists should use the term &#8220;gun responsibility&#8221; instead of &#8220;gun control&#8221; in order to win support from Second Amendment advocates.
McConaughey, who was vocal in advocating for change after the Uvalde, Texas, shooting, made the remarks during an <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/week-transcript-7-30-23-gov-chris-sununu/story?id=101818441">interview</a> on ABC News&#8217; &#8220;This Week&#8221; with Jonathan Karl.
McConaughey announced his new Green Lights Grant Initiative that he founded with his wife Camilla to help schools access federal grant money for safety and security.
He said that despite Congress passing the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (BSCA) last year, which approved funding for mental health services and school security in response to the Uvalde shooting, the money has not gone out to the schools.
He said that 12 schools in the area had applied for the funding but none had received it.
&#8220;What are we doing?&#8221; McConaughey said. &#8220;That’s a zero percent success rate. One, way too few applications. Number two, the 12 applications, we went zero for twelve?&#8221;
&#8220;The government admits that it shouldn’t be this complicated. You got 14,000 something schools,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;This grant initiative is going to connect those districts to those billions of dollars that’s there, available, and wants to be used to make our kids safe.&#8221;
McConaughey said that the reason that more gun control has not been implemented after tragedies was because of the way that the debate was being framed.
&#8220;Well, one of the things — it was just one word,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I went in there and flipped, seemed to get those hard second amendment defenders&#8217; ears to at least listen and that was — I changed the word from &#8216;control&#8217; to &#8216;responsibility.'&#8221;
&#8220;Control sounds like a mandate and nobody wants a mandate,&#8221; he said. &#8220;No one wants to be controlled. But responsibility is still something that we can all go, yeah, &#8216;I&#8217;ll take responsibility&#8217;, and a lot of the far-right or the Republicans, they almost feel like responsibility is a value that they have ownership of and it&#8217;s a sense of almost pride and honor to be responsible.&#8221;
McConaughey <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/matthew-mcconaughey-mulls-tx-governor-run-previously-suggested-people-take-one-for-the-team-give-up-some-gun-rights">said</a> at a 2018 rally for the anti-gun March For Our Lives group in Austin, Texas, that law-abiding gun owners needed to “take one for the team” and give up some of their gun rights, including the ability to own semi-automatic long guns and magazines that have the ability to carry certain amounts of ammunition.
“One, let’s ban the assault weapons for civilians. This is a no-brainer,” he said. “And to my friends out there, that are responsible owners of these assault weapons that they use for recreation, please let’s take one for the team and set it down.”
