The anti-ICE demonstrations and riots that broke out in Los Angeles County nearly a week ago calmed down on Wednesday night after L.A. Democratic Mayor Karen Bass issued a curfew and local law enforcement officers moved in to arrest any demonstrators who defied the order.
Bass issued a curfew on Tuesday and Wednesday night from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. for most of downtown L.A. to prevent any further violence or vandalism, The Los Angeles Times <a href="https://www.latimes.com/california/live/los-angeles-protests-immigration-raid-live-updates">reported</a>. An unlawful assembly was declared at 6:25 p.m. on Wednesday, and LAPD officers moved in to disperse the crowd, firing rubber bullets at 7:00 p.m. and causing many of the demonstrators to flee the scene. Thirty minutes later, the LAPD began arresting anyone who remained in the curfew zone downtown, which was around a few dozen protesters, according to the Times.
In a Thursday morning social media <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/114670085083632579">post</a>, President Donald Trump took credit for the calmer nights of protests, praising the National Guard and the Marines, whom he deployed to L.A., for putting &#8220;L.A. Police in a position to effectively do their job.&#8221;
&#8220;Los Angeles was safe and sound for the last two nights. Our great National Guard, with a little help from the Marines, put the L.A. Police in a position to effectively do their job,&#8221; Trump wrote. &#8220;They all worked well together, but without the Military, Los Angeles would be a crime scene like we haven’t seen in years.&#8221;
Trump then ripped California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, saying that he &#8220;had totally lost control of the situation.&#8221;
&#8220;He should be saying THANK YOU for saving his ass, instead of trying to justify his mistakes and incompetence!!!&#8221; the president added.
L.A. Police Chief Jim McDonnell told &#8220;<a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/la-police-chief-national-guard-focused-on-immigration-agenda-not-helping-with-protests/">CBS Mornings</a>&#8221; on Wednesday that the National Guard is not assisting local authorities with street protests or riot control.
&#8220;That&#8217;s not our understanding. They have a different mission,&#8221; McDonnell said. &#8220;They&#8217;re working in support of the federal agencies that are working with ICE on civil immigration enforcement and criminal immigration enforcement.&#8221; He added, &#8220;We don&#8217;t need the National Guard, and they are not here to help us right now.&#8221;
Mayor Bass <a href="https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/la-mayor-says-military-national-guard-presence-provoke-the-population">told</a> PBS on Wednesday that her curfews &#8220;absolutely&#8221; helped prevent more rioting in the downtown area.
&#8220;Last night was the first night of the curfew,&#8221; Bass said about the Tuesday night order. &#8220;And I will tell you, over 100 people were arrested, but they were arrested for failure to disperse and violating curfew, no violence, no vandalism. And so that is different than the night before.&#8221;
Bass continued to criticize Trump over the deployment of the National Guard, calling it &#8220;completely unwarranted&#8221; and arguing that Trump&#8217;s action provoked the rioting.
&#8220;No one asked for that help. You were talking about minor protests, but every time you do something like this, you provoke the population even further,&#8221; she said. &#8220;They are angry because of the raids, they are angry because of the National Guard being here, and now they are really going to be angry if the troops come in.&#8221;
Trump has called out both Bass and Newsom for how they handled the rioting over the weekend, when federal, state, and local law enforcement officers were attacked by agitators and buildings were vandalized and damaged. As the authorities quell the violence in L.A., the Trump administration continues to <a href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2025-06-11/los-angeles-immigration-protest-curfew">conduct</a> immigration raids throughout Southern California. The White House said on Wednesday that since last week, 330 suspected illegal immigrants in the Los Angeles area have been detained, 113 of whom had past criminal convictions. Immigration agents have targeted businesses, including at least five <a href="https://www.latimes.com/00000197-608b-d79b-adff-ecafffe80000-123">car washes</a> in Los Angeles and Orange Counties, arresting dozens of suspected illegal immigrants, according to the Times.

Montana Republican Sen. Tim Sheehy, a genuine conservative, offered a common-sense perspective on how to deal with Southern California in the wake of the anti-ICE riots in Los Angeles County, while also defending President Donald Trump’s budget bill from Democrats trying to savage it.
Sheehy, a former Navy SEAL who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, appeared on Fox Business with host Stuart Varney, who played a clip of Los Angeles Democratic Mayor Karen Bass saying “nothing was happening” in the city before ICE arrived last week.
“But these men are convicted murderers, rapists, and they would be on the streets of Los Angeles if they’d not been arrested. I don’t understand the mayor’s position,” Varney prompted.
“Common sense, Stu,” Sheehy replied. “That’s why we won the last election. Americans want a secure border, cheap gas, safe streets, boys are boys, girls are girls, cops are good, criminals are bad. And as we see today, the Democrats still are pushing non-common-sense policies. She’s sitting there telling us everything‘s fine in L.A.; there’s no criminals to be seen. Meanwhile, they’re burning cars, attacking cops, wreaking chaos in the streets. So people want safe streets; they want order in the streets, and that’s what the president’s bringing.”
“Listen, none of us want active-duty troops deployed in the U.S.; of course not, that’s a pillar of our Constitution, but we also need public safety,” he continued. “We need order in the streets, and Americans have every right to feel safe in their own homes.”
“Governor Newsom is going to be begging President Trump for money to fix some of the problems of his own creation in California. Should he get it?” Varney asked.
“It all depends on common sense, Stu,” Sheehy answered. “When it comes to wildfire spending, they want money to recover from wildfires; [we] absolutely want to rebuild those communities, but not if they’re going to follow the same wrong-headed policies. &#8230; And we shouldn’t be funding subsidies for the state of California if they’re not going to enforce laws in their own streets, and the federal government has to come in and do the job in the state, city, and county. Then we shouldn’t be paying for that either. So if they’re going to take care of their own house, we will certainly help them, but we shouldn’t be paying for policies that are bad for America.”
Varney asked if Medicaid waste and fraud was the “sticking issue” as the GOP senators consider President Trump’s budget bill, and if that was what the Democrats were “going to hang their hat on.”
“No, I think the issues are far more wide-ranging than that, Stu; that’s of course, the one that they’re wanting to message on,” Sheehy explained. “The reality is we’ve seen an explosion in Medicare and Medicaid fraud across the board, from improper payments to billions of dollars of payments that they didn’t even know where they went. A 9 to 1 dollar reimbursement ratio for able-bodied males when we’re not even paying the reimbursement ratio needed to cover the cost for pregnant women and people who are severely sick. So we have a system that has been perverted these last four years, and it’s rife with fraud and abuse, and we’re going to fix that. The most important thing is to protect Medicaid, to protect Medicare, for the people that really need it, and that’s exactly what we’re doing by shoring up these programs for the people who actually need it and reducing the fraud , waste, and abuse for those who do not need it.”

GOP Senator Backs Trump’s Response To L.A. Riots As ‘Common Sense’

President Donald Trump made it abundantly clear that he would not back down from intervening in the anti-ICE riots in Los Angeles, declaring, “I am not playing around.”
On Monday night, Trump mobilized an additional 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles to join the 2,000 Guardsmen deployed by the Trump administration over the weekend, along with <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-deploys-hundreds-of-marines-to-los-angeles">700 Marines</a> that were sent on Monday.
&#8220;If I didn’t &#8216;SEND IN THE TROOPS&#8217; to Los Angeles the last three nights, that once beautiful and great City would be burning to the ground right now, much like 25,000 houses burned to the ground in L.A. due to an incompetent Governor and Mayor,&#8221; Trump <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/114659367372751138">posted</a> on Truth Social on Tuesday morning.
Later in the day, speaking to a panel on Fox Business, Trump stated, “Last night was terrible. The night before that was terrible. As you’ve seen, it was on most of your networks, people with big, heavy hammers pounding the concrete and pounding curbs, pounding, breaking up, and handing these big chunks of concrete to people. And they were taking that concrete, going up on bridges, and dropping it into the roof of a car. They were throwing it at our police; they were throwing it at our soldiers that are there.”
“And we got it stopped and we have them in custody right now,” he continued. “Look, if we didn’t get involved, right now, Los Angeles would be burning just like it was burning a number of months ago with all the houses that were lost. But National Review published an <a href="https://www.nationalreview.com/2025/06/restoring-order-in-los-angeles/">editorial</a> explaining why Trump has the right to send the National Guard:

The president is relying on what a 1971 Office of Legal Counsel memo called his “inherent authority to use troops for the protection of federal property and federal functions,” as well as <a style="font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;" href="https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/10/12406" data-testid="standard-link">10 U.S.C. 12406</a>, which provides for the emergency mobilization of the National Guard. That statute says the president can call up the Guard when there’s an actual or threatened invasion or rebellion, or when he can’t execute the laws with regular federal forces.
Given what’s being done to attack and obstruct ICE agents who are simply enforcing the immigration laws, the latter condition applies. This is not an invocation of the Insurrection Act, which would involve federal troops taking on general law-enforcement functions. Instead, the role of the Guard is limited, as the presidential proclamation stipulates, to ensuring“the protection and safety of Federal personnel and property.”

“There need not be an actual rebellion — only the danger of one — for the president legitimately to call the Guard into federal service,” former Assistant United States Attorney Andrew McCarthy, who led the 1995 terrorism prosecution against Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman and eleven others,  <a href="https://www.nationalreview.com/2025/06/president-trump-has-legal-authority-to-suppress-the-siege-in-l-a/">added</a>. “Moreover, the explicit purpose of the ongoing rioting and mayhem is to thwart the enforcement of the federal immigration laws. Section 12406 expressly authorizes the use of military force when ordinary law enforcement has been violently prevented from carrying out federal functions.”

&#8220;Chaos is exactly what Trump wanted, now we are sending in hundreds more law enforcement to pick up the pieces. State and local leaders stand together, coordinated and resolute to ensure the safety of the Los Angeles region,&#8221; Newsom said.
Bass added, “While Washington choreographed these chaotic events, the LAPD and local law enforcement continue to effectively respond.”
The protests-turned-riots in L.A. were sparked by federal immigration raids in the region last week, one of which arrested suspected illegal immigrants in a Home Depot parking lot. The rioting picked up over the weekend as agitators attacked law enforcement officers by throwing rocks and cement and shooting fireworks at them. Rioters — some of whom waved Mexican flags — also <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/waymo-suspends-service-in-downtown-l-a-after-rioters-burn-5-of-its-self-driving-vehicles">set fire</a> to multiple Waymo robotaxis in the street. A total of 42 agitators were arrested, and some of them face charges of assault on an officer and attempted murder, CBS News <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/losangeles/news/downtown-la-protests-looting-burned-cars-vandalism-arrests/">reported</a>.
The cleanup process has begun in a section of downtown L.A. after rioters destroyed planter boxes, pedestrian signs, and public benches and chairs. At least three businesses, a T-Mobile store and two athletic footwear stores, were ransacked by looters, and a Jordan Studio 23 and Adidas store suffered shattered glass in their front doors. What remained of five burned-out Waymo vehicles was also being cleaned up in the street. Waymo suspended service in downtown L.A. after the rioters targeted the robotaxis.
While L.A. looks to clean up the damage, more anti-ICE rioting has hit San Francisco, where around 150 people were arrested Sunday night and at least two police officers were injured, ABC 7 <a href="https://abc7news.com/post/hundreds-protesters-rally-ice-raids-san-francisco/16701175/">reported</a>.

Trump Sends Another 2,000 National Guard Troops To L.A.

The FBI has identified a man who threw rocks at federal officers during anti-ICE riots in Los Angeles County over the weekend, the Justice Department announced.
U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli said Monday that 40-year-old Elpidio Reyna, a resident of Compton, California, was the man captured on video throwing rocks at law enforcement vehicles in Paramount, injuring one federal officer and damaging government vehicles. Reyna has not yet been arrested, and the FBI is offering $50,000 for information that leads to his capture. 
“Elpidio Reyna can run, but he can’t hide. He threw rocks at federal officers leaving a command post in Paramount on Saturday, a brazen attack caught on film and that could have resulted in deaths. Reyna, 40, is charged with assault on a federal officer, and faces up to eight years in prison if convicted,” Essayli posted on X.

Essayli’s post came after Attorney General Pam Bondi <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/ag-bondi-says-fbi-has-identified-suspect-accused-assaulting-federal-officer-trump-vows-tough-response" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> Fox News host Sean Hannity that the FBI was conducting a search warrant at Reyna’s home. Bondi added that he would be on the FBI’s Most Wanted list. 
&#8220;He has been identified by the great police work by the FBI,&#8221; she said. &#8220;So, you can run, you can’t hide. We are coming after you federally. If you assault a police officer, if you rob a store, if you loot, if you spit on police officers, we’re coming after you.&#8221;
Dozens of arrests have already been made throughout Los Angeles and San Francisco as rioters have been charged with vandalism, looting, and assaulting police officers. The Pennsylvania senator’s condemnation of his own party comes as Democrats in Washington and California attack President Donald Trump and his administration for ordering National Guard troops and Marines to L.A. County.
Starting Friday, riots that began as anti-immigration enforcement protests have rocked pockets of L.A. Rioters in face masks and waving foreign flags have set fire to cars, thrown bricks at police and federal officers, confronted authorities, defaced property, blocked traffic, and promoted civil unrest.
Over the course of the riots, notable Democrats have <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/kamala-backs-la-protests-after-rioters-attack-federal-officers">focused</a> more ire against the Trump administration’s decision to send in troops to quell the unrest than condemn rioting among anti-law enforcement demonstrators, accusing federal authorities of escalating the situation.
“Deploying the National Guard is a dangerous escalation meant to provoke chaos. In addition to the recent ICE raids in Southern California and across our nation, it is part of the Trump Administration’s cruel, calculated agenda to spread panic and division,” former Vice President Kamala Harris said in a statement that went on to call the demonstrations “overwhelmingly peaceful.”
On Monday, California sued the Trump administration for ordering the National Guard into the Los Angeles area. California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom said that the president violated the Constitution and undermined the state’s autonomy with the order. Newsom and other Democrats have also claimed that additional law enforcement sent to Los Angeles has only exacerbated the protests rather than tamp them down.
Newsom and Los Angeles Democratic Mayor Karen Bass have condemned violence during the protests. The two elected Democrats have faced fire from Trump and other Republicans for failing to quell the unrest in the first place, however.
“We made a great decision in sending the National Guard to deal with the violent, instigated riots in California. If we had not done so, Los Angeles would have been completely obliterated,” said Trump in a Monday <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/114654277401980803">post</a> to Truth Social.
“The very incompetent ‘Governor,’ Gavin Newscum, and ‘Mayor,’ Karen Bass, should be saying, ‘THANK YOU, PRESIDENT TRUMP, YOU ARE SO WONDERFUL. Topline: Pockets of Los Angeles are still under siege by anti-ICE rioters &#8212; and now the Marines are stepping in.
After a weekend of riots, on Monday afternoon, President Donald Trump deployed hundreds of Marines expected to protect federal personnel and property. They will join the 2,000 National Guardsmen who’ve already been activated. 
The move came as the unrest entered its fourth day. The chaos continued over the last 24 hours with rioters downtown shutting down a highway, setting self-driving autotaxis on fire, and lobbing bricks, Molotov cocktails, and fireworks at police. In one incident, rioters smashed out the windows at LAPD headquarters. In another, a number of businesses, including a Jordan sneaker store, were broken into and looted. Dozens of arrests have been made, but violent crowds continued to form overnight, vowing to riot until federal agents cease their deportation raids.
Trump has thus far refused to back down. The president said on Truth Social that he would “deal with the violent, instigated riots in California” and that without his deployment of the National Guard, “Los Angeles would have been completely obliterated.”
However, Republicans have accused many California Democrats of offering tacit support to the rioters while blaming President Trump for the violence:
Governor Gavin Newsom wrote on <a href="https://x.com/CAgovernor/status/1931916549490929862">X</a>, “Donald Trump is putting fuel on this fire. Commandeering a state&#8217;s National Guard without consulting the Governor of that state is illegal and immoral,” and the governor has announced plans to sue the administration for deploying California’s National Guard without permission. In an interview with <a href="https://x.com/DOGE__news/status/1931911364487876934">MSNBC</a>, Newsom challenged Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, to arrest him. “Come after me. Arrest me. Let’s just get it over with, tough guy. I don’t give a damn.”
(For his part, Trump responded Monday by saying, “I would [arrest him] if I were Tom. Gavin likes the publicity.”)
Senator Alex Padilla characterized the protests as <a href="https://x.com/RapidResponse47/status/1932081379082129886">“peaceful” and “passionate”</a>. “The vast majority of protesters and demonstrators are peaceful. … When you come into a community like Los Angeles, the way the Trump administration has, you need to expect to be countered with people who are passionate about defending fundamental rights.”
California Congresswoman Maxine Waters falsely claimed on CNN that there has been “no violence,” and later <a href="https://x.com/Mrgunsngear/status/1931839150145069529">taunted</a> members of the National Guard, saying, “What are you gonna do, shoot some kids? You gonna shoot an elected official? If you shoot me, you better shoot straight. I don’t know why you’re in my city … this is Trump.”
The White House has argued these riots are proving their point — that illegal aliens are wreaking havoc on American cities.

Topline: President Trump dispatched National Guard troops to Los Angeles this weekend despite the protests of local Democrat leaders. While disputes over National Guard deployments are unusual, they aren’t entirely unprecedented.
The federal government is typically barred from deploying military resources for law enforcement purposes in the United States – with one exception, found in the Insurrection Act, which says that the military can be deployed to enforce the law or quell rebellion. Constitutionally, its use relies on Congress’s authority to “provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions.”
The last time the National Guard was called on to quell riots was, coincidentally, also in Los Angeles, when President George H. W. Bush called them in to crack down on the Rodney King riots. One big difference between 1992 and today is that Bush had the backing of California’s governor and the mayor of L.A. Trump has neither, and that has been a focus of criticism.
California filed a lawsuit against the federal government on Monday, arguing that Trump&#8217;s mobilization of the National Guard violated constitutional procedure and the state’s sovereignty.
“[Trump’s order] abused the federal government&#8217;s authority and violated the 10th Amendment and federal law,” California Attorney General Rob Bonta <a href="https://x.com/cspan/status/1932142229793239207">said</a>. “As a result, I, in partnership with Governor Gavin Newsom, [am] suing President Trump and asking the court to set aside the president&#8217;s unlawful action federalizing the California National Guard.”
Republicans have largely supported the president’s actions and condemned the ongoing unrest.
“I spent 20 years in the military,” Congressman Tony Gonzales (R-TX) told <a href="https://x.com/RepTonyGonzales/status/1931746619201827272">CBS</a> on &#8220;Face The Nation.&#8221; “I fought in two wars. I fought to give people the freedom to protest whatever the hell they want to. But what we&#8217;re seeing in L.A. are not advocates. We&#8217;re seeing anarchists, and the President of the United States should absolutely put down the mob as soon as possible.”
<h2>Activists Create Anti-ICE Infrastructure</h2>

Topline: The anti-ICE protests sweeping through the Los Angeles area are being promoted and organized by left-wing activist groups, including a prominent nonprofit that receives tens of millions of taxpayer dollars from California.
The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights, or CHIRLA, has been identified as one of the key financial backers of the ongoing anti-ICE protests. <a href="https://x.com/LauraPowellEsq">Laura Powell</a>, civil liberties attorney and founder of Californians for Good Governance, told The Daily Wire that CHIRLA received $34 million from the state government in 2023, primarily from the California Social Services Department.
“There&#8217;s a rapid response network that was set up that is a coalition of various nonprofits, but [CHIRLA] seem[s] to be the central one because it&#8217;s their phone number that&#8217;s used as this hotline,” Powell said. “People on the street can call in to report when ICE is in the area and then they can deploy people to go to that area …and in some cases interfere with the officer&#8217;s work.”
In addition to tens of millions of dollars from the state government, CHIRLA received $450,000 from the Department of Homeland Security with the assistance of L.A. Democratic Mayor Karen Bass.
An investigation by Californians for Good Governance has also uncovered deep ties between CHIRLA and California’s Democratic establishment.
“Mayor Bass of Los Angeles is very connected to them. They&#8217;ve supported her. She&#8217;s bragged about helping them get federal funding in the past,” Powell told The Daily Wire. “They endorsed Kamala Harris, of course, Gavin Newsom, Adam Schiff. … They can&#8217;t directly endorse candidates because they&#8217;re a 501(c)(3), but they have a 501(c)(4) that they use for those candidate endorsements. They also sponsor a lot of legislation at the state level.”

President Donald Trump told reporters on Monday that it would be &#8220;great&#8221; if his border czar, Tom Homan, arrested California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom over the anti-ICE riots that hit Los Angeles County over the weekend.
Homan threatened Newsom and L.A. Mayor Karen Bass with arrest on Sunday if they “cross[ed]” the line&#8221; and impeded federal agents from arresting illegal immigrants. Asked about Homan&#8217;s comments, Trump said, &#8220;I would do it if I were Tom. I think it&#8217;s great. Gavin likes the publicity, but I think it would be a great thing.&#8221;
&#8220;He’s done a terrible job,&#8221; the president added of Newsom. &#8220;Look, I like Gavin Newsom, he’s a nice guy, but he’s grossly incompetent.&#8221;

Homan appeared to back down from his threat on Monday morning, saying there was no discussion about arresting the governor.
“What we discussed was for those protesters that crossed the line … you can protest, you get your First Amendment rights, but when you cross that line, you put hands on an ICE officer or you destroy property or I’d say that you impede law enforcement, or you’re knowingly harboring and concealing an illegal alien, that’s a crime, and the Trump administration is not going to tolerate it,” Homan told &#8220;Fox &amp; Friends.&#8221;
“Then the reporter asked me, well, could Governor Newsom or Mayor Bass be arrested? I said, ‘Well no one’s above the law. If they cross the line and commit a crime, absolutely they can,’ so there was no discussion about arresting Newsom,” he added.

The governor said Trump’s move was “unconstitutional” and that the administration did not coordinate with his office before deploying the National Guard, a power typically exercised by governors.
Trump, however, could invoke the Insurrection Act of 1807, which allows the president to federalize the National Guard and deploy the U.S. military to quell domestic disorder or violence.

A Los Angeles suburb abruptly terminated its contract with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after anti-immigration enforcement riots broke out in the region over the weekend. 
Glendale, the fourth-largest city in Los Angeles County, said Sunday that it was ending its agreement with ICE to house illegal immigrants at its police department detention facility. The decision came after rioters <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-vows-to-liberate-los-angeles-shut-down-migrant-riots-and-insurrectionist-mobs?topStoryPosition=undefined&amp;author=Leif+Le+Mahieu&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=0&amp;row=1&amp;rowHeadline=Top+Stories&amp;rowType=Top+Stories&amp;title=Trump+Vows+To+‘Liberate+Los+Angeles%2C’+Shut+Down+‘Migrant+Riots’+And+‘Insurrectionist+Mobs’">torched vehicles</a> and threw objects at federal officials and police officers at multiple protests in L.A. County. 
In a statement explaining its withdrawal, the city said that it had offered “access to clean accommodations, on-call medical care, family visitation, and legal counsel” to those arrested by federal immigration authorities as a result of a 2007 contract signed with ICE and Homeland Security. 
But it said it was ending the deal because of the &#8220;public perception&#8221; of ICE and potential dangers to local residents and businesses from rioters.
“Nevertheless, despite the transparency and safeguards the City has upheld, the City recognizes that public perception of the ICE contract — no matter how limited or carefully managed, no matter the good — has become divisive,” the city said in a <a href="https://www.glendaleca.gov/Home/Components/News/News/9293/16">statement</a>. “And while opinions on this issue may vary—the decision to terminate this contract is not politically driven. It is rooted in what this City stands for—public safety, local accountability, and trust.”
The city added that the decision was made in part to ensure that its “residents and businesses do not suffer the consequences of the unruly and unlawful behavior of others.”
Glendale’s decision to end its ICE contract comes just days after the Los Angeles Times published a <a href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2025-06-05/glendale-city-jail-ice-detainees-holding" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a> highlighting the agreement and quoting leftist activists who urged the partnership to end. They cited a California law passed in 2017 and signed by then-Governor Jerry Brown that prohibits law enforcement from using resources to assist federal immigration authorities in immigration enforcement. Standing contracts, such as the one Glendale had with ICE, were exempted. 
Parts of Los Angeles County were rocked with violence on Saturday and Sunday after protests broke out over ICE operations in the area that began on Friday. On Monday, the Los Angeles Police Department <a href="https://ktla.com/news/local-news/42-arrested-5-lapd-officers-hurt-in-immigration-protest-unrest/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> that 42 people had been arrested on a variety of charges, from assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, looting, and arson. 
&#8220;This violence that I&#8217;ve seen is disgusting,&#8221; <a href="https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/la-protests-arrests/3718945/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell on Sunday. &#8220;It&#8217;s escalated now. What we saw the first night was bad. What we&#8217;ve seen subsequent to that is getting increasingly worse and more violent.&#8221;

The American autonomous driving technology company Waymo has suspended service in downtown Los Angeles after several of its robotaxis were set on fire by anti-ICE activists over the weekend.
At least five Waymo vehicles were set ablaze on Sunday, prompting the company to remove its vehicles from the downtown Los Angeles area and suspend service, <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/conormurray/2025/06/09/los-angeles-protests-live-updates--27-people-arrested-as-lapd-declares-unlawful-assembly-in-some-areas/">Forbes</a> reported.
“To our media partners, demonstrators and others who may enter the area of Los Angeles St, North of Arcadia and South of Alameda: Burning lithium-ion batteries release toxic gases, including hydrogen fluoride, posing risks to responders and those nearby. Please avoid the area,” the LAPD warned on X on Sunday.

After anti-ICE activists blocked the 101 Freeway on Sunday afternoon, some approached “five Waymo taxis lined up on Los Angeles Street between Arcadia and Alameda streets around 5 p.m.,” the Los Angeles Times <a href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2025-06-08/waymo-vehicles-set-on-fire-protesters-police-clash">reported</a>. “Tires were slashed, windows smashed, and anti-ICE messages spray-painted over the self-driving taxis &#8230; Protesters swarmed around the vehicles, tearing the doors off and stomping on the windshields. One man with a mask over his face smashed car windows with a skateboard. Another appeared to use a makeshift flamethrower to set the interior of a car ablaze.”

Chaos erupted over the weekend in the Los Angeles area as some anti-ICE protesters turned violent after false claims that ICE had conducted a “raid” on a Home Depot in the city of Paramount had circulated after a Home Depot in L.A. had been raided on Friday. To quell the riots, President Trump mobilized and deployed some 2000 members of the National Guard.
By Sunday, things spiraled even further out of control, with hordes of protesters blocking interstates, burning cars, and injuring law enforcement officers. In response, Northern Command said it was ready to send in 500 Marines to help keep the peace. But LA’s Democratic Mayor Karen Bass said federal authorities are making things worse – and that Trump is responsible for the widespread unrest.
“What we&#8217;re seeing in Los Angeles is chaos that is provoked by the administration,” Bass said. “When you raid Home Depot and workplaces, when you tear parents and children apart, and when you run armored caravans through our streets, you cause fear and you cause panic. And deploying federalized troops is a dangerous escalation… I call on all Angelenos to continue expressing your right, your anger, your outrage. But to do it peacefully.”
Dozens of people have been detained throughout the protests, and at least two law enforcement officers have been injured, according to a report from <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/losangeles/news/national-guard-troops-los-angeles-immigration-protests/">CBS</a>.
“There were times when things were out of control in this situation and the local law enforcement didn&#8217;t have a total handle on what was going on,” Elex Michaelson, an anchor at FOX News&#8217;s L.A. affiliate, told The Daily Wire on Sunday. “My own colleague on Fox 11, Matthew Seedorf and his photographer, Sam Dubin, were out reporting in Paramount and their vehicle, their news vehicle was destroyed with people punching out the windows – spray-painting “F*** ICE” on it, slashing the tires, stealing stuff from their vehicle – as they were out doing their job. So that&#8217;s an example of criminals taking advantage of a situation and creating chaos.”

Topline: After their public falling out last week, Trump is warning Elon Musk to stay out of the midterm elections as the president pushes forward on the passage of his signature budget bill. 
Elon Musk, who once said he “loved Trump as much as a straight man can love another man,” continued to slam the president over the weekend. While he has deleted some of his most inflammatory remarks on X, including an allegation that Trump was covering up Jeffrey Epstein’s client list to protect himself, he has put out new statements that have drawn more attention to the rift. Musk tweeted Friday that he would “apologize profusely as soon as there is a full dump of the Epstein files.”
Trump responded by calling Musk “the man who has lost his mind” — according to a report from <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2025/06/06/politics/musk-alleged-drug-use-trump">CNN</a> the president asked his aides if the outburst could be related to alleged drug use on Musk’s part, although publicly he has said, “I don’t want to comment on his drug use. I don’t know.. [<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/05/30/us/elon-musk-drugs-children-trump.html">The New York Times report</a> on the subject] sounded very unfair.”
Apart from personal digs, Musk could pose a more substantial risk to Trump’s electoral prospects. Writing on X, the billionaire asked his followers if it was &#8220;time to create a new political party in America that actually represents the 80% in the middle.&#8221; After his audience responded favorably, Musk said it was “fate” and that he would name it the “America Party.” Musk spent more than a quarter of a billion dollars during the 2024 election cycle, and third-party candidates with his backing could potentially act as spoilers in key races, jeopardizing the Republicans&#8217; narrow majority.
That has gotten Trump’s attention. Speaking to ABC News, the president said Elon will “have to pay very serious consequences” if he funds challenges against Republicans in 2026. 
Allies of both men have publicly and privately called on them to reconcile, but as of now, they remain at odds. President Trump said there was “no reason to” repair the relationship, which he “assumed” was over. However, stranger things have happened – Trump’s current vice president, JD Vance, was <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/us/jd-vance-once-compared-trump-hitler-now-they-are-running-mates-2024-07-15/">once</a> a “never Trumper” who compared the president to Adolf Hitler years before he became one of his supporters.

Topline: An online debate has erupted between Olympic gymnast Simone Biles and former NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines over the question of transgender-identifying athletes competing in women’s sports.
The controversy began when Gaines, a vocal critic of transgender-identifying male athletes competing against women and girls, commented on a social media post from the Minnesota State High School League. The post celebrated Champlin Park High School’s girls’ softball state championship win. However, the team’s star pitcher is a boy who identifies as a girl – and he pitched a shutout in the 6-0 victory. Gaines noted that the team turned its comments off, posting on social media: “To be expected when your star player is a boy.”
Biles weighed in by calling Gaines “truly sick” and a “sore loser,” and she accused Gaines of bullying. But then, despite being known for supporting the “body positivity” movement, she mocked Gaines’ physique, telling Gaines to “bully someone your own size, which would ironically be a male.” Gaines is 5’5&#8243;, around average height for a woman.
Interestingly, though, some X users dug up an old<a href="https://x.com/Simone_Biles/status/918328165478666240"> post</a> from Biles in which she acknowledged men’s innate physical advantages over women. In 2017, she wrote, “Good thing guys don&#8217;t compete against girls or he&#8217;d take all the gold medals!!” Gaines also noted Biles and other gymnasts suffered under Larry Nassar, suggesting that the same system that failed them then is now negatively impacting female athletes by putting them in vulnerable positions, like allowing men in their locker rooms.
Both women have received their fair share of support online. With the support for Gaines, there’s a building outcry now for brands like Athleta to drop Biles as an ambassador for female athletes. On the flip side, legacy media and many left-wing pundits voice their support for Biles. There were a number of op-eds, including one from USA Today, cheering her as a hero.
Politically, however, this issue puts Democrats between a rock and a hard place. Many of those fervent and vocal supporters, including celebrities like Biles, are deeply committed to gender ideology and allowing trans-identifying men into women’s sports and women’s spaces. The overwhelming majority disagree – a February 2025 New York Times/Ipsos poll, for example, found that about 80% of respondents believe biological males should not be allowed to compete in women’s sports, including 67% of Democrats and 64% of independents.

A Los Angeles judge has resentenced the Menendez brothers to 50 years to life on Tuesday, making them eligible for parole and opening the door for their potential release from prison.
Lyle, 57, and Erik, 54, were originally sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in 1996 for murdering their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in 1989 inside their Beverly Hills home. The brothers have justified the fatal shootings, claiming they endured sexual abuse from their father that went on for several years.
Both brothers read statements during the resentencing hearing.
&#8220;I committed an atrocious act. My actions were criminal, selfish and cowardly,&#8221; Erik said. &#8220;I have come a long way on this path [of redemption].” 
The case had received renewed interest after several high-profile entertainment projects were released, including a Netflix docuseries.
Judge Michael Jesic said he&#8217;d given the case &#8220;long thought.&#8221; While the judge described Lyle and Erik’s crime as &#8220;absolutely horrific,” he added that in his belief, they’ve been rehabilitated while in jail for the past three decades.
&#8220;Life without parole gives an inmate no hope, no reason to do anything good. And I give them a lot of credit. It&#8217;s remarkable what they did when they had no hope of getting out,&#8221; Jesic said.
Menendez brothers&#8217; attorney Mark Geragos said after the hearing, &#8220;I&#8217;m hopeful and glad that we&#8217;re one huge step closer to bringing the boys home.&#8221;
“This encourages people who are incarcerated to make the right decisions, to take the right path,&#8221; Geragos went on. &#8220;It&#8217;s just a win-win on so many levels.&#8221;
Former Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón initiated the resentencing process before losing his re-election bid to Nathan Hochman. In March, the new DA filed a motion to withdraw the resentencing petition, saying the self-defense claims were nothing but “lies,” according to ABC News.
&#8220;The Menendez brothers have failed to come clean with the full extent of their criminal conduct, their cover-up, their lies and their deceit,&#8221; Hochman said outside the courtroom on Tuesday.
Members of the Menendez family have mostly supported the brothers&#8217; resentencing bid. Their uncle, Milton Anderson, was the only family member to publicly oppose the effort. He died in March.
