A Washington, D.C. watchdog group accused former Senator Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) on Tuesday of spending nearly $2 million in campaign cash after leaving office, $1.3 million more than was reported last month.
The Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT) filed a formal complaint Tuesday, and is asking the Federal Election Commission (FEC) to investigate the nearly $2 million in campaign funds reportedly spent on staffing, travel, events, and other miscellaneous costs. The group says there&#8217;s a reasonable chance Sinema violated federal law by using the money for personal benefits. 
Sinema’s Senate term ended in 2024, but FACT says her campaign committee continued spending into 2025. The complaint includes a table summarizing the expenditures. According to FACT’s analysis, staff and payroll expenses totaled $653,555. Other listed expenditures include credit card payments and bank fees, air travel, security, office and administrative expenses, lodging, meals, and events.

The watchdog acknowledges that federal law allows former senators to use campaign funds for a limited period to close down office operations, but the complaint argues that “the amount alone is significant and suggests it is not related to official duties.” It further states that “many of the expenses do not appear to have any relation to winding down an office, but rather they appear quite clearly to be for personal purposes, namely makeup services, alcohol, catering and lodging. Thus, there is reason to believe that Kyrsten Sinema and Sinema for Arizona have violated federal law.”
FACT highlights approximately $9,000 spent at resorts in Beverly Hills, Montauk, Wyoming ski country, and the Grand Canyon. The complaint also raises concerns about staff payments made to a security guard with whom Sinema allegedly had a personal relationship.
When Sinema left office on January 3, 2025, her campaign account had a balance of <a href="https://azmirror.com/briefs/kyrsten-sinema-fec-complaint-illegally-spending-700000-in-campaign-funds-on-personal-expenses/">$4.2 million</a>, but that money was gone when she filed the termination report for her campaign committee.
This isn&#8217;t the first formal complaint about Sinema&#8217;s spending habits. In 2024, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics (CREW) filed a complaint alleging Sinema spent more than <a href="https://www.citizensforethics.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/2024-12-17-Sinema-for-Arizona-complaint-signed.pdf">$100,000</a> on travel expenses between March and September 2024. CREW said the reported trips to Italy and Boston were not connected to Sinema&#8217;s campaign or work in the Senate.
The FEC has not yet formally addressed the 2024 complaint.
Typically, after the FEC reviews a complaint, it determines whether there is “reason to believe” a violation occurred. If the agency finds merit, it may impose civil penalties, including monetary fines or the repayment of improperly used funds. In cases where violations are found to be knowing and willful, the matter can be referred to the Department of Justice, which could pursue criminal charges.
FACT filed the complaint just after news broke of Sinema joining the Washington Reporter as a columnist. Sinema did not immediately respond to comment regarding the post office expenditure spending.

Senator Cory Booker may have etched his name into the record books with the longest floor speech in Senate history — but it was former Senator Kyrsten Sinema who had the last laugh.
Sinema, who left the Democratic Party in 2022 while representing Arizona in the upper chamber, long disagreed with Democrats on the virtue of the filibuster. She argued that Democrats should not end the filibuster, because it would open the door for them to ram their agenda through, repeatedly pointing out to her colleagues that the time might come when they were not in power and needed it.
Meanwhile, Democrats — including Booker — insist that it was a &#8220;relic&#8221; of the Jim Crow era. In 2022, Booker said the filibuster &#8220;has been abused to stop reforms supported by the vast majority of Americans.&#8221;
But now, Booker and the Democrats are changing their tune, celebrating Booker for unseating the late segregationist Senator Strom Thurmond with the &#8220;LONGEST FILIBUSTER IN SENATE HISTORY!&#8221;

Technically, Booker didn&#8217;t actually filibuster. There was no legislation under consideration for him to oppose, so, he was just giving a floor speech — a record-breaking floor speech, sure, but not a filibuster. Still, that hasn&#8217;t stopped Democrats from celebrating Booker&#8217;s &#8220;filibuster,&#8221; a far cry from their condemnations of the tool.

Sinema went as far as to create a spreadsheet so she could call out those who were being hypocrites on the issue, many of whom attacked her for protecting the filibuster while she served in the Senate.

Sinema also called out far-Left Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) for attacking Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) for voting to keep the government open.

The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/u-s-senate" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Senate</a> blocked President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/joe-biden" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Joe Biden</a>&#8216;s renomination of the current chairwoman of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Lauren McFerran, with the help of two lawmakers who left the Democratic Party.
Sens. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/joe-manchin" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Joe Manchin</a> (I-WV) and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/kyrsten-sinema" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kyrsten Sinema</a> (I-AZ) joined with Republicans in a <a href="https://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_votes/vote1182/vote_118_2_00320.htm#position" target="_blank" rel="noopener">50-49 cloture vote</a>, effectively stymying the bid to give McFerran a new five-year term.

The setback for Biden means that Democrats were denied a majority at the five-member NLRB until at least 2026 with President-elect Donald Trump in office and Republicans retaking control of the Senate, <a href="https://www.politico.com/live-updates/2024/12/11/congress/nlrb-nominee-stalls-senate-democrats-00193798" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to POLITICO</a>.
Sen. Bill Cassidy, the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee ranking member who has <a href="https://www.help.senate.gov/ranking/newsroom/press/ranking-member-cassidy-demands-accountability-from-nlrb-for-abusing-authority-influencing-union-elections-on-behalf-of-labor-organizers" target="_blank" rel="noopener">raised concerns</a> about NLRB allegedly influencing union elections in favor of organizers, celebrated the vote against McFerran.
&#8220;This NLRB seat should be filled by President Trump and the new incoming Senate. Not a historically unpopular president and a Senate Democrat Majority that has lost its mandate to govern,&#8221; Cassidy said.

On X, HuffPost&#8217;s Igor Bobic <a href="https://x.com/igorbobic/status/1866919229976613229" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shared</a> that Manchin said his opposition to McFerran &#8220;is not a surprise to anyone,” pointing to a joint employer rule that he previously <a href="https://www.manchin.senate.gov/newsroom/press-releases/manchin-applauds-senate-vote-to-overturn-biden-administration-rule-threatening-american-franchise-model-small-businesses" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bemoaned</a> for &#8220;saddling&#8221; franchisers with liability for franchise owners.
C-SPAN&#8217;s Craig Caplan <a href="https://x.com/CraigCaplan/status/1866907564509696050" target="_blank" rel="noopener">noted</a> Sinema, who like Manchin is leaving the Senate in a couple weeks after not running for another term, returned Wednesday for floor votes for the first time since the upper chamber came back from its Thanksgiving break.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) had also filed cloture on a Republican NLRB pick, Joshua Ditelberg, but he <a href="https://x.com/NickNiedz/status/1866919080046862524" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reportedly</a> shut down his own effort to move forward with the nomination after McFerran was blocked.

Goldberg began the show with a clip of Manchin saying of Harris, &#8220;Shame on her. She knows the filibuster is the Holy Grail of democracy.&#8221;
When pressed by a reporter on whether he would still stand by her in the 2024 presidential contest, he nixed that possibility immediately: &#8220;I&#8217;m not endorsing her, never.&#8221;

Manchin was not the only one to criticize Harris&#8217; plans to axe the filibuster, either. Independent Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema also warned that it would be an unwise course of action — in part because of the door that would open for Republicans if Democrats pressed the issue.
Noting that a move to a 50+1 majority would also give Republicans the ability to pass legislation by that margin — even the nationwide abortion ban that Democrats have repeatedly claimed would come if Trump were reelected. Trump has also repeatedly said that he would not push an <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/vance-trump-would-veto-abortion-ban-wants-to-end-culture-war-on-abortion" target="_blank" rel="noopener">abortion ban</a>, arguing that regulation of abortion was and should be in the hands of the states.

On Thursday, the Democrat-controlled <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/u-s-senate" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Senate</a> once again rejected a border security bill that failed to pass earlier this year.
The &#8220;Border Act,&#8221; which <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/senate-fails-to-advance-border-security-compromise" target="_blank" rel="noopener">got blocked</a> in February when linked to foreign aid, failed to meet the 60-vote threshold as a standalone measure to have the upper chamber invoke cloture and proceed with consideration.
Fifty members voted against advancing the bill, while only <a href="https://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_votes/vote1182/vote_118_2_00182.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">43 members voted</a> in favor of moving forward with the legislation, which Democrats <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/senate-to-give-failed-border-security-bill-another-chance-house-republicans-warn-it-would-be-dead-on-arrival?ref=lite.verity.news" target="_blank" rel="noopener">resurrected</a> <a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/senate-bill/4361" target="_blank" rel="noopener">this month</a>.
One of the members who spent months helping to craft the bill, Sen. James Lankford (R-OK), came out against how leadership handled reviving the legislation.
&#8220;I&#8217;m making it very clear with my vote that this is a stunt — not an attempt to do anything,&#8221; Lankford <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VJ1Ib6gSpM" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> Newsmax. &#8220;And I&#8217;m going to be interested in how many Democrats walk away from this.&#8221;
Another negotiator, Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ), delivered a <a href="https://x.com/SenatorSinema/status/1793702553768645109" target="_blank" rel="noopener">floor speech</a> claiming that Democrats and Republicans have chosen &#8220;political theater&#8221; over real progress.
The bill seeks to tighten up the asylum process and shore up border security to get a grip on the migrant crisis, but many GOP lawmakers argued it would codify President Joe Biden&#8217;s <a href="https://scalise.house.gov/press-releases/House-GOP-Leadership-Statement-on-the-Senate-Taking-Up-Failed-Immigration-Legislation-This-Week" target="_blank" rel="noopener">&#8220;open border&#8221; policies</a>.

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) announced on Tuesday that she will not seek re-election and will leave the U.S. Senate at the end of this year.
Her exit from the Senate clears the way for the race to be a two-way battle between Republican Kari Lake and Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) in an election that could determine which party controls the Senate.
In the video where she made her announcement, Sinema warned that America was choosing the worse course by continuing to go to the political extremes on both sides.
&#8220;In 2017, I warned we were approaching a crossroads,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Our democracy was weakened by government dysfunction, and the constant pull to the extremes by both political parties. I promised I would do my best to fix it, to protect and defend our Constitution, to listen to others without judging to focus on what unites us, and to make Americans lives better.&#8221;
&#8220;Through listening, understanding and compromise, we delivered tangible results that make America safer, stronger, and more prosperous,&#8221; she continued. &#8220;Yet despite modernizing our infrastructure, ensuring clean water, delivering good jobs and safer communities, Americans still choose to retreat farther to their partisan corners.&#8221;
&#8220;These solutions are considered failures, either because they&#8217;re too much or not nearly enough. It&#8217;s all or nothing. The outcome, less important than beating the other guy,&#8221; she added. &#8220;The only political victories that matter these days are symbolic, attacking your opponents on cable news or social media. Compromise is a dirty word. We&#8217;ve arrived at that crossroad. And we chose anger and division. I believe in my approach, but it&#8217;s not what America wants right now. I love Arizona, and I am so proud of what we&#8217;ve delivered. Because I choose civility, understanding, listening, working together to get stuff done, I will leave the Senate at the end of this year.&#8221;

Kyrsten Sinema Announces She Is Leaving U.S. Senate

Arizona senator Kyrsten Sinema, who left the Democratic Party last year and became an independent, blasted Democratic Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer, her former boss, because the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Shelter Services Program has plans to send roughly twice the amount of funding to New York that it plans to send to Arizona, a border state.
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXSj86ojGIk" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Speaking</a> to first responders in the border city of Yuma, Sinema was asked, “Why is the money going to New York, and who’s sending it?”
“My staff is gonna be really upset but I&#8217;m gonna tell you the truth here,” Sinema admitted. “The reason the money is going to New York is because the Speaker of the House (likely a reference to Hakeem Jeffries, the House Democratic Leader) is from New York and the leader of the United States Senate (Schumer) is from New York. That is how a bunch of money went to New York.”
“The Shelter and Services Program provides funds to non-federal entities that provide sheltering and other eligible services to noncitizen migrants who have been encountered by the Department of Homeland Security and released from custody while awaiting the outcome of their immigration proceedings,” <a href="https://www.fema.gov/grants/preparedness/shelter-services-program" target="_blank" rel="noopener">FEMA</a> states. “The intent is to support U.S. Customs and Border Protection in the safe, orderly, and humane release of noncitizen migrants from short-term holding facilities.”
Arizona will receive a total of roughly $69.3 million; New York will receive a total of roughly $134.6 million, according to <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12367509/Im-going-tell-truth-Kirsten-Sinema-blasts-former-boss-says-decision-send-130-MILLION-migrant-money-New-York-instead-border-states-Senate-leader-Chuck-Schumer-NEW-YORK.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Daily Mail</a>.
“Look, this is something I fought for,” she continued. “When I fought really hard to ensure that this money got included in the omnibus budget in December of last year &#8230; we fought really hard to get this in, the money was intended — and there’s language that was put in the law that said that it should be going for decompression of the border. The fact that a yeoman&#8217;s amount of this money went to New York City in my opinion is wrong because they are not a border state and they are not facing the kind of pressure that we are facing here.”
“So when I hear from folks in other parts of the country who say, ‘Oh, it’s hard, our shelters are overwhelmed,’ yeah, come live a day in the life of Yuma, Summerton, or San Luis. Just one day,” she declared.
“I am livid that the administration is sending money to a part of the country that while it has a lot of folks showing up in their shelter, they don&#8217;t have folks wandering the streets of our small towns and communities or facing heat exhaustion, showing up without basics like formula,” she said.
“People will come across the border with chicken pox. What we&#8217;re experiencing here in Arizona is matched only by what folks are experiencing in southern Texas. Those are the two communities that are experiencing this crisis. The rest of the country’s seeing some elements of it, but we are here facing the brunt. And it is wrong and unfair that that SSP money is going to places other than South Texas and South Arizona,” she concluded.

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) slammed President Joe Biden during an interview on Sunday for his repeated failure to secure the U.S.-Mexico border as the crisis is expected to intensify this week as Title 42 is set to end.
Sinema made the remarks during an interview with Margaret Brennan on CBS News&#8217; &#8220;Face The Nation&#8221; while discussing the ongoing crisis at the border and new legislation that she has introduced that would act as a &#8220;band-aid&#8221; to address the issue.
Brennan highlighted actions that the Biden administration says they&#8217;ve taken to address the situation, including deploying a small number of troops to the border and creating a phone app for migrants.
Sinema said the administration&#8217;s measures &#8220;have been announced in the past week or so&#8221; despite an ongoing border crisis that erupted immediately when Biden came into office.
&#8220;Having 1,500 troops along the U.S.-Mexico border is helpful. It is a border of over 2,000 miles though,&#8221; she continued. &#8220;So 1,500 troops isn&#8217;t gonna get the job done. That&#8217;s just the reality.&#8221;
&#8220;We also are very concerned that all this is happening in the week or so before the rollout,&#8221; Sinema said. &#8220;Just today, I was on the phone with a sheriff of Cochise County. He has gotten no information from the Department of Homeland Security or the federal government about what the flow is going to look like, about what they can expect for processing in terms of how long it takes to process migrants. He&#8217;s got no information.&#8221;
Sinema said that the only information the sheriff has received is from her because she is staying in regular contact with him.
&#8220;What&#8217;s unfortunate is that I&#8217;m asking for that information and I&#8217;m not getting it,&#8221; Sinema said of the Biden administration. &#8220;And so either the administration has that information and they&#8217;re choosing not to share it, which is a problem since we&#8217;re the ones who are going to deal with the crisis, or they don&#8217;t have it and that&#8217;s even more concerning, because how do you prepare for the inflow of migrants when you don&#8217;t know what you&#8217;re going to expect?&#8221;

Sinema said the information had not been shared with Arizona Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs.
&#8220;We&#8217;ve had two years to prepare for this,&#8221; Sinema said of the Biden administration&#8217;s window to prepare for the end of Title 42. &#8220;I think that there&#8217;s a system in Washington, D.C. that is deeply disconnected from the real lives and experiences of border communities and the migrants who seek to come to this country.&#8221;
Sinema said she would like those living in Washington, D.C., &#8220;to learn&#8221; what living in a state impacted by the border crisis is like.

Sen. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/kyrsten-sinema" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kyrsten Sinema</a> (I-AZ) slammed White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre this week for falsely claiming that the U.S. southern border was secure, saying that her comments were “just factually not true.”
Jean-Pierre had <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/press-briefings/2023/05/01/press-briefing-by-press-secretary-karine-jean-pierre-29/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">claimed</a> on Monday that “the actions that this president has taken” had led to a 90% decrease in illegal immigration.
Sinema hit back at those comments during an appearance on Fox News&#8217; &#8220;Special Report&#8221; with anchor Bret Baier.
&#8220;Obviously, the border is not secure. Anyone with eyes can see that,&#8221; Sinema said. &#8220;And anyone who lives in a border state like I do, born and raised in Arizona, actually takes offense at comments like that because they&#8217;re just factually not true. The reality is, is that border communities in my state are suffering already, and that&#8217;s before the end of Title 42.&#8221;
&#8220;Just last week, I held a hearing in our border subcommittee and brought a Republican mayor and a Democratic mayor, both representing small border towns from Arizona,&#8221; she said. &#8220;And we just asked them, what is it like every day in your town? And Bret, there are high-speed chases going on through the city of Sierra Vista right now with young teens driving cars and sometimes being killed or causing the death of others transporting drugs and other migrants through these communities.&#8221;
&#8220;It is not secure,&#8221; Sinema added. &#8220;It is not safe.&#8221;
Sinema later said that she believes that Biden could at least start trying to address the crisis he is accused of creating by &#8220;enforcing the laws that are on the books.&#8221;
&#8220;There are a lot of bipartisan plans that we&#8217;ve been working on with some of our colleagues in the Senate and the House that could actually make a difference,&#8221; she said. &#8220;It would be most helpful if the administration would start by actually enforcing the laws that are on the books, that would provide confidence, particularly to Republican members of the House and the Senate, that we could get something done.&#8221;

Senator Sinema Blasts Karine Jean-Pierre For Claiming Border Is Secure: 'Factually Not True'

Senator <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/kyrsten-sinema" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kyrsten Sinema</a> (I-AZ) is preparing to run for re-election in 2024.
Sinema, who ran as a Democrat in 2018 but disaffiliated from the party in December 2022, is gearing up to run for a second term in 2024, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal. Sinema&#8217;s third-party campaign could set up a competitive three-way Senate race in the battleground state of Arizona, a potential nightmare scenario for Democrats.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Sinema&#8217;s team discussed the timeline for the campaign at a staff retreat this week. One of the meetings included a slideshow presentation about the campaign. One of the slides laid out the timeline for the rest of this year, including conducting internal polling and opposition research by September 30 and filling out campaign staff by December 31.
Another slide touts the Senator&#8217;s independent streak. “Kyrsten is an independent voice for Arizona,&#8221; the slide reportedly read. &#8220;As Arizona’s senior senator, she’s committed to ignoring partisan politics, shutting out the noise and delivering real results helping everyday Arizonans build better lives for themselves and their families.” Sinema was a thorn in the side of Senate Democrats during the last Congress: she refused to cast a vote to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/kyrsten-sinema-will-not-support-changing-the-filibuster-much-to-democrats-dismay" target="_blank" rel="noopener">break the filibuster</a> in order to pass Democratic bills overhauling the American election system and enshrining <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/manchin-sinema-dodge-far-left-calls-to-break-filibuster-to-pass-abortion-bill" target="_blank" rel="noopener">abortion</a> into federal law.
Sinema has already made a filing with the <a href="https://docquery.fec.gov/cgi-bin/forms/S8AZ00197/1672721/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">FEC</a> to run as an independent, a key step allowing her to raise money for the campaign. While she hasn&#8217;t released public numbers, WSJ reported that she has already raised some $2 million in the first three months of 2023 and has just under $10 million cash on hand. She is also broadening her fundraising net, staying on Democratic donation platform ActBlue, but also bringing on an additional platform.
However, in order to appear on the ballot, she needs to gather signatures from <a href="https://azsos.gov/elections/candidates/running-office" target="_blank" rel="noopener">3% of non-party affiliated voters</a> in the state, roughly 40,000 total. The filing deadline to appear on the ballot in Arizona is April 2024.
Running as an independent could set up a three-way contest in the Grand Canyon State. Democratic Congressman <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/democrat-ruben-gallego-announces-campaign-for-kyrsten-sinemas-senate-seat" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ruben Gallego</a> announced that he was running against Sinema in January. &#8220;Growing up poor, all I had was the American dream,&#8221; he captioned a video announcement on Twitter. &#8220;It kept me going: as a kid sleeping on the floor, a student scrubbing toilets, a Marine losing brothers in Iraq. Today, too many Arizonans see their dream slipping away. I’m running for the U.S. Senate to win it back for you!&#8221;
On the Republican side, it&#8217;s still an open question who will challenge Sinema. Pinal County Sheriff <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2024-election/arizona-gop-sheriff-mark-lamb-launch-us-senate-bid-rcna78721" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mark Lamb</a> will reportedly announce his candidacy next week. Former Republican gubernatorial candidate <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/kari-lake-is-considering-senate-run-making-some-republicans-nervous-85a80081" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kari Lake</a> reportedly <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2024-election/sinemas-decision-quit-democratic-party-jolts-arizona-2024-senate-race-rcna60947" target="_blank" rel="noopener">encouraged</a> Lamb to run for Senate, but recently she has been mulling a run of her own. Former Republican Senate candidate Blake Masters is also mulling a run. Republican Rep. Andy Biggs, former Attorney General candidate Abe Hamadeh, former 2022 Senate candidate Jim Lamon, and former 2022 gubernatorial candidate Karrin Taylor Robson are other names being floated for the Republican nomination.
