<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/jerry-seinfeld" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jerry Seinfeld</a> took back statements he previously made, attributing leftist-driven political correctness as being a death knell for comedy.
The 70-year-old <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/comedian">comedian</a> made the initial comments during an interview with The New Yorker in April. At the time, he said, “People [are] worrying so much about offending other people” that the art of comedy has been going downhill. 
“When you write a script and it goes into four or five different hands, committees, groups—’Here’s our thought about this joke.’ Well, that’s the end of your comedy,” Seinfeld <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/jerry-seinfeld-sounds-off-the-extreme-left-and-p-c-crap-has-killed-television-comedy">declared</a> at the time.
Now, the sitcom creator is changing his story. On an episode of his “Breaking Bread” <a href="https://youtu.be/PQWslKu129g">podcast</a> released on Tuesday, Seinfeld told fellow comedian Tom Papa that he “regrets” making those statements, which went viral at the time.

“I said that the ‘extreme left’ has suppressed the art of comedy. I did say that. That’s not true,” Seinfeld told Papa. “It’s not true. If you’re a champion skier, you can put the gates anywhere you want on the mountain and you’re going to make the gate. That’s comedy. Whatever the culture is, we make the gate. You don’t make the gate, you’re out of the game. The game is where is the gate and how do I make the gate to get down the hill.”
He continued, “Does culture change and are there things that I used to say that [I can’t because] people are always moving [the gate]? Yes, but that’s the biggest and easiest target. You can’t say certain words about groups. So what? The accuracy of your observation has to be 100 times finer than that just to be a comedian…So I don’t think, as I said, the ‘extreme left’ has done anything to inhibit the art of comedy.”
Seinfeld also denied rumors that he was unwilling to perform at colleges anymore. 
“First of all, I never said it, but if you think I said it, it’s not true. I play colleges all the time,” the celeb said. “I have no problem with kids, performing for them. I was just at the University of Indiana. I do colleges all the time.”

Comedian Jerry Seinfeld mocked a pro-Palestinian protester over the weekend who disrupted another one of his comedy shows in Australia, saying that they just gave more money to a Jew in order to insult him.
The incident happened as Seinfeld was performing in Melbourne at the Rod Laver Arena on Saturday night when the group interrupted and claimed that he supported &#8220;genocide.&#8221;
&#8220;Oh, you&#8217;re back. They&#8217;re back! The protesters are back! I&#8217;ve missed you!&#8221; Seinfeld responded as the crowd began to boo the protesters. &#8220;Oh, you&#8217;re not doing well. It&#8217;s so hard for you. Yes, listen, dude, listen, let me explain something, you and I are in the same business.&#8221;
&#8220;We&#8217;re in the same business. Our business is to get people to see things the way we see,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;The problem is you&#8217;re in the wrong place. &#8230; You hear how well I&#8217;m doing? This is what you want. You want to do well, like I am, looking at the people here to hear me, look at what happened to you.&#8221;
He said that if he went to a sporting event and tried to do his comedy routine that he would be booed just like the protesters were getting booed at the comedy event.
&#8220;I think you need to go back and tell who&#8217;s ever running your organization, &#8220;We just gave more money to a Jew,'&#8221; Seinfeld later added. &#8220;That cannot be a good plan for you. That&#8217;s not what you want! That&#8217;s the whole problem! You got to come up with a better plan.&#8221;

Seinfeld had a similar run in with anti-Semitic protesters earlier this month when he was performing at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney.

Comedian Jerry Seinfeld blasted a pro-Palestinian heckler at an event in Australia over the weekend for interrupting the show for political reasons.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, 63, slammed Jerry Seinfeld during an <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/08/magazine/julia-louis-dreyfus-interview.html">interview</a> with The New York Times over the weekend after Seinfeld noted that the political Left has killed television comedies.
Dreyfus claimed that the show the two starred in, &#8220;Seinfeld,&#8221; could &#8220;probably not&#8221; be made today because &#8220;it’s hard to get anything different recognized&#8221; and &#8220;everyone’s sort of running scared.&#8221;
When asked about the remarks Seinfeld made about political correctness killing comedy, Dreyfus claimed that a lot of comedy &#8220;bits and pieces &#8230; don’t age well.&#8221;
Dreyfus, a staunch Democrat activist, said that she thinks having &#8220;an antenna about sensitivities is not a bad thing.&#8221;
&#8220;When I hear people starting to complain about political correctness — and I understand why people might push back on it — but to me that’s a red flag, because it sometimes means something else,&#8221; she claimed. &#8220;I believe being aware of certain sensitivities is not a bad thing.&#8221;
&#8220;My feeling about all of it is that political correctness, insofar as it equates to tolerance, is obviously fantastic,&#8221; she later added. &#8220;And of course I reserve the right to boo anyone who says anything that offends me, while also respecting their right to free speech, right?&#8221;
Seinfeld <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/jerry-seinfeld-sounds-off-the-extreme-left-and-p-c-crap-has-killed-television-comedy">said</a> in an interview in late April that the American people &#8220;need&#8221; to be able to come home from work and have comedy on television.
“They need it so badly and they don’t get it,” he said. “It used to be, you would go home at the end of the day, most people would go, “Oh, ‘Cheers’ is on. Oh, ‘M*A*S*H’ is on. Oh, ‘Mary Tyler Moore’ is on. ‘All in the Family’ is on.” You just expected, there’ll be some funny stuff we can watch on TV tonight.”
“Well, guess what — where is it? This is the result of the extreme left and P.C. crap, and people worrying so much about offending other people,” he continued. “Now they’re going to see stand up comics because we are not policed by anyone. The audience polices us. We know when we’re off track. We know instantly and we adjust to it instantly.”
“But when you write a script and it goes into four or five different hands, committees, groups — ‘Here’s our thought about this joke,&#8217;” he added. “Well, that’s the end of your comedy.”

Jerry Seinfeld’s days of “yada yada yada” are over.
The comedian behind “the show about nothing” is getting serious of late, sharing sober advice with college graduates, supporting the state of Israel and explaining why comedy ain’t what it used to be.
The latter, inexplicably, caused him the most grief.
The 70-year-old told The New Yorker <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/podcast/the-new-yorker-radio-hour/jerry-seinfeld-on-making-a-life-in-comedy-and-also-pop-tarts" target="_blank" rel="noopener">podcast</a> that the “extreme Left” is responsible for the modern decline in comedy.
“It used to be you would go home at the end of the day, most people would go, ‘Oh, &#8216;Cheers&#8217; is on,” he told the publication. “‘Oh, &#8216;M.A.S.H.&#8217; is on, oh, &#8216;Mary Tyler Moore&#8217; is on. &#8230; You just expected, there’ll be some funny stuff we can watch on TV tonight. Well, guess what? Where is it? This is the result of the extreme left and PC crap, and people worrying so much about offending other people.&#8221;
The reaction was wildly predictable. Conservatives, who by and large want comedians to say whatever they please sans filter, cheered the proclamation. 
The media and the Left — but we repeat ourselves — threw a fit.
For example, CNN published an essay capturing the author’s “<a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/05/08/opinions/jerry-seinfeld-unfrosted-why-are-we-laughing-seymour/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">growing unease</a>” with the squeaky-clean comic.
Seinfeld’s “observational comedy” leaves no resonances or echoes in its wake; it doesn’t startle or upend expectations. And unlike the epochal sitcom David and Seinfeld brought forth together, Seinfeld’s routines don’t leave you with any perceptions of substance about what is truly mortifying about Being Human.

Why is “observational comedy” in scare quotes? Is that an inaccurate term? Better yet, why does every yuk have to come with a socially progressive message?
Slate weighed in, too, with a comically titled piece, <a href="https://slate.com/culture/2024/05/jerry-seinfeld-unfrosted-netflix-movie-pop-tarts-age.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">“What’s the Deal with Jerry Seinfeld?”</a>
His crime? He isn’t singing from the progressive hymnal.
“…he’s even started embracing his Judaism more publicly, and in December traveled to Tel Aviv to visit the families of Hamas hostages. Who can fault a Jewish celebrity for calling attention to the dead and missing of Israel? Yet he’s notably not commented on the Netanyahu government, condemned the war, or discussed the suffering of Gazans.”
Had he done the latter, this “think” piece wouldn’t exist.
Other attacks on the comic legend proved pathetic. <a href="https://www.salon.com/2015/07/22/10_seinfeld_episodes_that_are_racist_and_sexist_in_retrospect_partner/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">He’s old! He’s white! He’s out of touch</a>!
The Washington Post whined that he should “<a href="https://www.salon.com/2015/07/22/10_seinfeld_episodes_that_are_racist_and_sexist_in_retrospect_partner/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wake up</a>” and realize “mean-spirited humor isn’t cool anymore.” Except Seinfeld is the opposite of “mean-spirited.” He’s so clean you could eat Spam off his stand-up set.
Plus, the media doesn’t mind mean-spirited gags that target a certain former President or MAGA nation. Or Christians.
It’s a dodge. All of it. Why? Seinfeld was right, and he hit a nerve so deep it explains the extreme reactions.
“Seinfeld,” one of TV’s greatest sitcoms, routinely is labeled “problematic.” That means some of the gags are now offensive/racist/sexist/name-the-ist.
<a href="https://www.salon.com/2015/07/22/10_seinfeld_episodes_that_are_racist_and_sexist_in_retrospect_partner/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Salon cited 10 classic episodes</a> for condemnation. And it’s <a href="https://www.salon.com/2015/07/22/10_seinfeld_episodes_that_are_racist_and_sexist_in_retrospect_partner/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">far from alone</a> on this front.
Seinfeld himself cited one example, recalling an episode where Kramer (Michael Richards) suggests using homeless people as rickshaw-style drivers. He said they couldn’t make that episode today, and few would disagree.

Hollywood happily glamorizes professional assassins (take a bow, John Wick) but cringes at George Costanza noticing a teen girl’s chest. 
That captures woke culture to a T. It makes no sense.
We saw extreme attacks on comedy following the March 2020 death of George Floyd. Beloved shows like “The Golden Girls” and “30 Rock” memory-holed select episodes with visuals evoking blackface.
The former episode featured a <a href="https://www.salon.com/2015/07/22/10_seinfeld_episodes_that_are_racist_and_sexist_in_retrospect_partner/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">beautician-style mud treatment</a>, suggesting how extreme the comedy attacks were at the time.
The eighth and final season of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” got overhauled following Floyd’s death. The sly show’s swan song genuflected to the BLM movement. Main character Jake, who adores being a cop, ditched police work for full-time parenting. 
Laugh riot, no?
Hilarious, R-rated comedies no longer flood the cineplex. Comedy titans like Jack Black, Will Ferrell, Melissa McCarthy and Seth Rogen now toil on the small screen or accept more serious roles.
Todd Phillips is not a household name, but he’s the comic director behind “The Hangover,” “Road Trip” and “Old School.”
He made the darkly serious “Joker” in 2019, explaining why he <a href="https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2019/10/joaquin-phoenix-cover-story" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shifted from comedy to comic book fare</a> to Vanity Fair.
“Go try to be funny nowadays with this woke culture…There were articles written about why comedies don’t work anymore — I’ll tell you why, because all the f***ing funny guys are like, ‘F*** this s***, because I don’t want to offend you.’”
Will Ferrell took grief for 2015’s “Get Hard” for allegedly peddling racist jokes alongside co-star Kevin Hart, who is black. Why wasn’t Hart offended?
Amy Schumer got pummeled by the woke Left for both “Snatched” (2015) and “I Feel Pretty” (2018) for similarly “problematic” content. She hasn’t led a movie comedy since.
And if you don’t believe Seinfeld, what about Mel Brooks? The maestro behind “The Producers,” “Young Frankenstein” and “Blazing Saddles” insists over and again that the latter couldn’t be made today. Does anyone disagree? The revered western satire skewers racism at every turn by turning the “n-word” on its users. Comedy always works best that way.
Brooks doesn’t excoriate the Left while explaining why his classic comedy wouldn’t be possible now. He just acknowledges the new abnormal, and we all nod in agreement.
Seinfeld’s complaint rings inarguably true, but it could have a short shelf life. Rebel comedians like Tim Dillon, Shane Gillis and Ryan Long are on the rise, and the recent Tom Brady roast on Netflix spent several days as one of the platform’s most viewed TV shows or specials.
And no comedian apologized or lost work for telling those cruel, cutting jokes.
Maybe comedy is on the comeback trail. If so, its resurgence only strengthens Seinfeld’s point.

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/jerry-seinfeld">Jerry Seinfeld</a> gave the commencement address at <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/duke-university">Duke University</a> over the weekend and apologized during his remarks for the sexual content in his 2007 animated children’s film.
The 70-year-old comedian mentioned “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/movies">Bee Movie</a>” while addressing the crowd gathered in Durham, North Carolina, on Sunday. &#8220;I made a cartoon movie about bees you may have watched as a child,&#8221; Seinfeld said in a <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@drummerofphc/video/7368144938531409195">video clip</a> that’s since gained traction on TikTok.
&#8220;If any of you felt slightly uncomfortable about the sexual undertones in the relationship between Barry B. Benson and Vanessa, the florist who saves his life, I would like to apologize for that now,&#8221; he added. &#8220;I may not have calibrated that perfectly.&#8221;
Over the years, there’s been a lot of conversation about the nature of the relationship between Seinfeld’s character, a bee, and his human co-star, Vanessa (voiced by Renée Zellweger).
This isn’t the first time Seinfeld brought up his regrets about the relationship in “Bee Movie.”
&#8220;I apologize for what seems to be a certain uncomfortable subtle sexual aspect of the &#8216;Bee Movie,'&#8221; he said during a 2021 <a href="https://youtu.be/W_pOI7kHMTI">appearance</a> on The Tonight Show. &#8220;[It] really was not intentional, but after it came out, I realized this is really not appropriate for children. Because the bee seems to have a thing for the girl, and we don’t really want to pursue that as an idea in children’s entertainment.&#8221;

Prior to his speech, several pro-Palestinian students walked out of the commencement ceremony when Seinfeld was announced as a speaker, as The Daily Wire previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/anti-israel-protesters-get-booed-as-they-walk-out-on-graduation-speaker-jerry-seinfeld">reported</a>. The comedian has voiced his support for Israel publicly as the war against Hamas continues. 
Seinfeld received an honorary degree from Duke. His son Julian currently attends the college, while his daughter Sascha previously graduated from there.
The stand-up star has recently been promoting his newly released comedy, “Unfrosted,” about the origin of Pop-Tarts. The movie, Seinfeld’s directorial debut, has received mixed reviews from critics. It currently has a 40% critical rating and a 55% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Actor John O&#8217;Hurley, who is known for playing J. Peterman on NBC&#8217;s &#8220;Seinfeld,&#8221; slammed woke culture in an interview this week after the show&#8217;s star, Jerry Seinfeld, recently railed against the political Left for ruining television <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/comedy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">comedy</a>.
Seinfeld told The New Yorker this week that people used to be able to turn on television and find a wide range of good comedy shows every night.
“Well, guess what — where is it? This is the result of the extreme left and P.C. crap, and people worrying so much about offending other people,” Seinfeld said. “Now they’re going to see stand up comics because we are not policed by anyone. The audience polices us. We know when we’re off track. We know instantly and we adjust to it instantly.”

O&#8217;Hurley responded to Seinfeld&#8217;s remarks during a Fox News interview this week where he recounted numerous jokes they made on the show.
He said that leftists have caused the country to lose &#8220;our ability to be silly.&#8221;

&#8220;There wasn&#8217;t a cleaner comic in the business in the last 50 years of our laughs, and for him to say that — and he said this about 10 years ago, when he said, &#8216;I no longer am doing college campuses.&#8217; He says they&#8217;re they&#8217;re mean-spirited,&#8221; O&#8217;Hurley said.
&#8220;Historically, ethnic groups would be searching to be included in the comic repertoire of our culture,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And now — no, no, no — we can&#8217;t. And it&#8217;s not that they don&#8217;t want it, it&#8217;s that there&#8217;s a select group of those who know better who feel as though they should be deprived of it,&#8221; he said.

Renowned comedian Jerry Seinfeld went on record saying the movie industry is “over.” This is all very curious timing considering that he’s currently promoting a movie.
The 69-year-old celebrity is still doing the standup circuit as he has been for close to five decades. He’s fresh off an appearance in the series finale of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” alongside his longtime friend and frequent collaborator, Larry David. In addition to comedy, Seinfeld has worked as an actor, writer, and producer.
Now for the first time ever, the Brooklyn native is taking a spot in the director’s chair with the debut of “Unfrosted,” a comedy about two rival cereal companies – Kellogg’s and Post – trying to outdo one another to create the perfect breakfast pastry.

The stand-up legend spoke with <a href="https://www.gq.com/story/jerry-seinfeld-gq-hype">GQ</a> about making the leap into the movie business.
“It was totally new to me. I thought I had done some cool stuff, but it was nothing like the way these people work,” Seinfeld said of getting into the movie industry after so many years of being involved in other facets of the entertainment industry. “They’re so dead serious! They don’t have any idea that the movie business is over. They have no idea.”
“Film doesn’t occupy the pinnacle in the social, cultural hierarchy that it did for most of our lives,” he added. “When a movie came out, if it was good, we all went to see it. We all discussed it. We quoted lines and scenes we liked. Now we’re walking through a fire hose of water, just trying to see.”
When asked what has replaced films in pop culture, Seinfeld replied, “Depression? Malaise? I would say confusion. Disorientation replaced the movie business,” he answered. “Everyone I know in show business, every day, is going, ‘What’s going on? How do you do this? What are we supposed to do now?’”

“Unfrosted” is scheduled for a May 3 release on Netflix. The logline reads, “Michigan, 1963. Kellogg’s and Post, sworn cereal rivals, race to create a pastry that will change the face of breakfast forever. A tale of ambition, betrayal, sugar, and menacing milkmen, ‘Unfrosted’ stars writer-director Jerry Seinfeld.”
The cast includes plenty of other celebrities, including Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Amy Schumer, Max Greenfield, Christian Slater, Bill Burr, Daniel Levy, James Marsden, Jack McBrayer, Thomas Lennon, Bobby Moynihan, Adrian Martinez, Sarah Cooper, and Fred Armisen.
Seinfeld has been contemplating doing a Pop-Tart origin story film for years. In 2018, he <a href="https://twitter.com/JerrySeinfeld/status/1031969212359757826">shared</a> on X, “At one point I was thinking about an invention of the Pop-Tart movie. Imagine the drunk on sugar-power Kellogg’s cereal culture of the mid-60s in Battle Creek, MI. That’s a vibe I could work with.”

Plus, breakfast cereal is a topic he’s visited during his stand-up routines. GQ noted that one of Seinfeld’s earliest bits included the line, “Where in the world do you get your balls to call a breakfast cereal &#8216;LIFE?&#8217;”
The outlet also noted that Seinfeld and David were in a supermarket discussing breakfast cereal when they came up with the idea for the TV sitcom “Seinfeld,” arguably one of the most successful shows of all time. “[Cereal is] what we were discussing in that grocery store, when I said, ‘This is the show,’” Seinfeld said.

“Unfrosted” is an amalgamation of fact and fiction, with facts being presented alongside exaggerations for maximum comedic effect. When asked by Eater why he thought the invention of Pop-Tarts was funny enough to make a movie about, Seinfeld replied by saying it was just a gut feeling.
“I sometimes can’t explain why something is funny. But I just know that that is a funny thing,” he <a href="https://www.eater.com/24139655/jerry-seinfeld-pop-tart-movie-unfrosted-interview">told</a> the outlet. “It had to do with the name. It had to do with giving kids the power to make something with heat. Most kids when I was little never did anything like that — only adults handle things that had to do with heat — so it was an exciting new world to use a toaster. As a kid, you felt like you were cooking when you made Pop-Tarts.”
“I don’t think there’s anything as funny in the entire [1960s] — certainly in the food world — as the Pop-Tart,” the comedian continued. “It was such a surprise when it came out. It had nothing to do with anything else. There’s different cookies. There’s different candies. There’s nothing really that surprising in the candy world. But in the breakfast world, this was a total shock when they made this.”
He said even concocting the movie felt like a joke at first, until it became something real. Seinfeld compared the race to make a marketable breakfast pastry to the space race.
“[Writer] Andy Robin said, ‘It’s like The Right Stuff,’ with these two companies competing to get to the moon first — the Pop-Tart moon,” Seinfeld added.

The longtime sitcom star said he took a similar approach to “Unfrosted” as he did to writing “Seinfeld” scripts, opting to always select whatever was “funniest” rather than going for historical accuracy. The Pop-Tart movie isn’t meant to be a documentary, but is rather a comedy filled with nuggets of truth.
While speaking with GQ, Seinfeld also said stand-up is still popular while other expressions of entertainment suffer because it’s real. He said in an era when people crave authenticity, comedy can still thrive because it’s too hard to fake.
“I’ve done enough stuff that I have my own thing, which is more valuable than it’s ever been,” the comedian told the outlet. “Stand-up is like you’re a cabinetmaker, and everybody needs a guy who’s good with wood. … There’s trees everywhere, but to make a nice table, it’s not so easy. So, the metaphor is that if you have good craft and craftsmanship, you’re kind of impervious to the whims of the industry.”
“Audiences are now flocking to stand-up because it’s something you can’t fake,” he added. “It’s like platform diving. You could say you’re a platform diver, but in two seconds we can see if you are or you aren’t. That’s what people like about stand-up. They can trust it. Everything else is fake.”

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/jerry-seinfeld">Jerry Seinfeld</a> said working with British actor Hugh Grant in his new <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/movies">movie</a>, “Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story,” was not pleasant.
“We had lots of fights. He’s a pain in the a** to work with. He’s horrible,” the 69-year-old <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/comedian">comedian</a> said of the star during a Wednesday interview on the &#8220;Tonight Show.&#8221; “He tells you before you work with him, ‘You’re gonna hate this.’ And he’s so right.”
Seinfeld said he harbors no negative feelings for his co-star, however, after the pair shared a meal together at the conclusion of filming. 
“We shot for 10 weeks, and that night that he and I had dinner — and we got drunk having dinner — that was the greatest night,” Seinfeld said. “Because he’s so cool and he’s that English thing, you know, that witty. He looks good in a jacket &#8230; he’s one of those guys. I love those guys,” he continued, per <a href="https://ew.com/jerry-seinfeld-hugh-grant-pain-ass-unfrosted-8621553">Entertainment Weekly</a>.
In the film, Grant plays Thurl Ravenscroft, the voice of Kellogg’s Tony the Tiger. Seinfeld also said he never pictured casting Grant in the part, but did so because Grant asked for it.
“[Grant] called us and he said, ‘I want to be in the Pop-Tart movie,’” Seinfeld told Fallon. “So he did an audition on his phone — with a glass of wine in the other hand, by the way.”
The comedian went on, joking, “Like I care what the audition was. I go, ‘Yeah, sure, you’re Tony the Tiger, sure.’”

“Unfrosted” is scheduled for a May 3 release on Netflix. The logline says, “Michigan, 1963. Kellogg’s and Post, sworn cereal rivals, race to create a pastry that will change the face of breakfast forever. A tale of ambition, betrayal, sugar, and menacing milkmen, ‘Unfrosted’ stars writer-director Jerry Seinfeld.”

Seinfeld has been contemplating doing a Pop-Tart origin story film for years. In 2018, he <a href="https://twitter.com/JerrySeinfeld/status/1031969212359757826">shared</a> on X, “At one point I was thinking about an invention of the Pop-Tart movie. Imagine the drunk on sugar-power Kellogg’s cereal culture of the mid-60’s in Battle Creek, MI. That’s a vibe I could work with.”
