Argentinian President Javier Milei, speaking at the World Economic Forum summit in Davos, invoked the Bible to inspire his audience to return to the values that made the West great.
“I am here before you to state categorically that Machiavelli has been dead for years,” Milei began. “Our thinking has been distorted by a false dilemma in the design of public policy, one that claims we must choose between political efficiency and respect for the ethical and moral values of the West.”
“As Professor Jesús Huerta de Soto explains in his work on dynamic efficiency, from this perspective, efficiency is not compatible with multiple schemes of equity or justice; rather, it arises exclusively from one: respect for private property and the entrepreneurial function,” he stated. “Therefore, the opposition between efficiency and justice is false and mistaken. What is just cannot be inefficient, and what is efficient cannot be unjust. From the standpoint of dynamic analysis, justice and efficiency are two sides of the same coin.”
Referring to the economist Murray Rothbard, who established the connection between the dynamic conception of economic efficiency and ethics, Milei declared, “Only the ethical principles underlying Western culture can serve as a criterion of efficiency when making public policy decisions. Put bluntly, when designing public policy, it is ethically and morally inadmissible to sacrifice justice on the altar of efficiency. This commitment to values stands above economic efficiency and far above political utilitarianism. When ethical and moral values are abandoned, policies become not only unjust, but also lead to collapse — not only economic collapse, but social collapse as well, to the point of threatening Western civilization itself.”
“We must never forget Thomas Sowell’s words about socialism: it sounds wonderful, but the catch is that it always ends badly — horribly badly,” he warned. “Beyond the repeated disasters of socialism in the twentieth century, we see today the aberrant damage caused in Venezuela — not only an 80% collapse in GDP, but worse still, the establishment of a bloody narco-dictatorship whose terrorist tentacles spread throughout the American continent.”
“Today more than ever, faced with the ethical and moral degradation of the West resulting from the embrace of a new socialist agenda, it is necessary to reclaim and assert the ideas of liberty. However, unlike past approaches based on utilitarianism, the defense of free-enterprise capitalism must today be grounded in its ethical and moral virtue,” he asserted. “If we want to emerge from our dark present, we must return to Greek philosophy, embrace Roman law, and restore Judeo-Christian values — the foundations that can save the West.”
“Many human conflicts arise from a failed relationship between natural law and positive law,” he continued. “Natural law governs human beings because it aligns with their nature and is therefore universally just. It is common to all humanity, intrinsic, immutable, and unchangeable. Positive law, by contrast, is written by humans for their convenience. When positive law aligns with natural law, there is justice; otherwise, it may be legal, but not legitimate. Private property ensures maximal productive effort. Protecting physical integrity rather than value ensures continual productive improvement. Any deviation reduces productive effort.”
“Regulation kills increasing returns and thus kills growth,” he stated. “This logic applies equally to artificial intelligence, which is the 21st-century equivalent of Adam Smith’s pin factory. States should stop harassing those building a better world. Dystopian fears are nonsense. Market size and real resources limit expansion. Human capital remains vital.&#8221;
“Public policy must be guided by ethics, not utilitarianism, which always leads to injustice, populism, and poverty. Machiavelli is dead. It is time to bury him,” he said. “Free markets make us better people. They allow us to prosper, defend property, preserve peace, achieve social harmony, and strengthen the virtues essential to a prosperous society.”
Then he turned to the Bible:

Topline: Following his showdown with Chinese President Xi Jinping, President Trump has returned from his Asia tour with new deals in hand and perhaps most importantly, reduced tensions with China. 
After the meeting, Xi described the feeling as “warm” and Trump touted what he called an “amazing meeting.” Here he is grading the talk aboard Air Force One. 
“Overall, I guess on the scale of 0-10, with ten being the best, I would say the meeting was a 12,” <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2hY2qJYtj0">said</a> Trump.
Trump said official terms of a deal are “very close to resolved,” but it appears the big ticket items on his wishlist were met. In a Truth Social post early Thursday, the President said Xi had agreed to “work diligently with us to stop the flow of Fentanyl into our Country.” As a result of those assurances, Trump announced plans to lower the existing tariff that was imposed on China in response to fentanyl trafficking.

In addition, Trump said Xi agreed to “purchase American energy,” potentially oil and gas from Alaska. Trump is looking to keep Beijing from buying Russian oil, so that would be a win-win.
On the agricultural front, Trump says China has also agreed to begin purchasing massive amounts of soybeans, sorghum, and other farm products. With that news, he encouraged farmers to “immediately go out and buy more land and larger tractors.” And finally, he said the Chinese would resume the sale of rare earth minerals used for tech products and large magnets.
Trump says the overall tariff rate on Chinese exports will fall from 57% to 47%, leaving significant trade barriers in place, but far lower than the 100% plus rate that was looming without a deal. The two countries also agreed to remove port fees that had been impacting cargo ships from each side. Looking ahead, Trump said the two leaders will continue to meet on a more regular basis — he’ll travel to Beijing in April, and Xi will come to the US shortly after, potentially to Mar-a-Lago.

Topline: The Trump administration has pledged to crack down on illegal immigrant drivers, but Americans have been left wondering: why do these crashes keep happening?
An accident in Florida brought this issue into the national spotlight. An accident was allegedly caused by an illegal immigrant identified as Harjinder Singh, an Indian national. Singh allegedly made an illegal u-turn, blocking a highway, and causing a van to careen into Singh’s trailer. Three people were killed in the crash.
Several similar cases have happened since then, often involving illegal immigrants carrying California-issued commercial driver&#8217;s licenses (CDLs).
Some of the major contributors to this issue of illegal immigrants obtaining CDLs have been the flood of illegal immigration into the United States under former President Joe Biden, and then the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/how-illegal-immigrant-truck-drivers-ended-up-on-americas-roads">failure</a> of the federal government to ensure that CDL applicants received proper testing before they were handed driver&#8217;s licenses.
In Singh’s case, the Indian national failed an English language proficiency test in the aftermath of the fatal collision, “providing correct responses to just 2 of 12 verbal questions and only accurately identifying 1 of 4 highway traffic signs,” according to the Department of Transportation.
A Republican-backed bill in Congress <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/republican-bill-takes-aim-at-democrat-states-giving-truck-licenses-to-illegal-aliens">aims</a> to crack down on these holes in the system. Under the legislation, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy would have the authority to revoke a state’s ability to grant “non-domiciled CDLs,” or commercial licenses for applicants who live out of state, if the state were found in violation of federal rules around CDLs.
The bill would also standardize some rules about the CDL process by requiring all testing to be conducted in English and that all CDL applicants hold a driver’s license for at least one year.
The Trump administration is taking steps to ensure that all testing is done in English. Duffy is also conducting a nationwide audit of state CDL permitting programs. The worst offender is California, where more than 25% of non-domiciled CDLs reviewed by the feds were improperly issued, <a href="https://www.transportation.gov/briefing-room/trumps-transportation-secretary-sean-p-duffy-takes-emergency-action-protect-americas">according</a> to the Department of Transportation.
The Trump administration is also restricting who can get a CDL. Foreigners must have specialized work visas. They can&#8217;t be border crossers who are awaiting the fate of their asylum cases.

Morning Wire spoke to Andres Martinez-Fernandez, senior policy analyst for Latin America at The Heritage Foundation, for more on South American governments. (The following interview has been lightly edited.)
Morning Wire: We’ve seen rapidly changing dynamics between the administration and various political leaders in South America. Let’s start with Argentina. We just saw Javier Milei’s party win a landslide victory. How significant is this victory in the country?
Martinez-Fernandez: It&#8217;s really significant because President Milei is representing a major departure from what has been for the past couple decades. Argentine leadership is typically Left, far-Left leaning and socialist in its nature for economic policies. That has brought about generally an anti-American bent. But President Milei has brought an agenda which is really the opposite of all those – very pro-market, individual responsibility, cutting government. As far as relations with the United States, we&#8217;ve likely never had a more aligned leader in Argentina. This victory really solidified what was, with his victory a couple years back for the presidency, a massive shift. But it really solidifies that with this legislative win, which is going to help him with his agenda.
Morning Wire: The U.S. recently helped Argentina with a $40 billion support package – how much of a role did that play in this election?
Martinez-Fernandez: I think a very significant role, and President Trump deserves a lot of credit for the victory that we saw for Milei’s party. What we saw was, just in the days prior to the election, the White House meeting with President Milei and President Trump and the announcement of this package, which is directly aimed at stabilizing the financial crisis, which was generated by the socialist policies which dominated in Argentina for so long. This is a vital economic stability move, but in addition to that, it&#8217;s a major sign of confidence from the United States and from the world, which I think translated into more confidence from Argentines in the president of Argentina&#8217;s ability to stabilize the economy and try a new path forward.
Morning Wire: Turning to Bolivia. We recently saw a monumental election there  – the first conservative president in 20 years. What is the significance of the election there and does it fit into a larger trend in South America?
Martinez-Fernandez: Yeah, absolutely. It does seem to be certainly part of a broader trend that we&#8217;ve seen. In a lot of ways, President Milei was the start of this as far as the current wave of right-of-center leaders coming to power, Bolivia being the most recent. But before that, we saw elections in Ecuador, which solidified a more conservative leader, and also elsewhere in the region. We have upcoming elections in countries like Chile, Brazil, and Peru, where a conservative candidate is well-poised also for victory there. I do think part of that is centering from the impetus that we see from the successes of Argentina, but more broadly, the Trump administration&#8217;s very positive engagement with these partners. The shift in Bolivia specifically is historic. This is a country which has just been completely controlled politically by the socialist movement there, which has dominated institutions and weaponized those to maintain power. The people just overwhelmingly, despite all of that, rejected that movement and now have a more conservative leader who has promised to do a series of shifts – not only as far as domestically aligning with more pro-market economic and stable policies, but also as far as shifting toward the United States and Western alliances.

Argentine President Javier Milei gifted President Donald Trump a gold-framed Nobel nomination letter on Tuesday during a meeting between the two leaders at the White House.
Milei presented Trump with the gift ahead of a dinner attended by top officials from each government. Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado was awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday despite a chorus of world leaders who pushed for Trump to win this year’s honor.
Milei, through a translator, said that he is “very honored, especially in this moment when we are giving thanks for Trump’s great leadership,” according to the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/argentina-donald-trump-javier-milei-imf-c6f37a00c96f8aa321324ff443147b4e">Associated Press</a>.
“We can follow a peaceful route and make Argentina a strong example for freedom and prosperity,” the visiting president said.

“Argentina faces a moment of acute illiquidity. The international community – including [the International Monetary Fund] – is unified behind Argentina and its prudent fiscal strategy, but only the United States can act swiftly. Milei is an economist by training and a forceful advocate for free markets and capitalism. His aggressive reforms to Argentina’s economy, the third-largest in South America, showed early success in <a href="https://www.techrepublic.com/article/news-openai-data-center-argentina/">attracting</a> investment, <a href="https://tradingeconomics.com/argentina/inflation-cpi">reducing</a> inflation to around 30%, and <a href="https://batimes.com.ar/news/economy/imf-downgrades-argentina-2025-growth-forecast-to-45.phtml">restoring</a> economic growth of roughly 5%.
But Milei’s popularity has <a href="https://directoriolegislativo.org/en/milei-faces-midterm-elections-at-the-lowest-point-of-his-approval/">sagged</a> recently, with midterm elections quickly approaching later this month. Local elections held last month featured a closely-watched bellwether race that went against Milei’s party, spooking investors. Concerns surged that Milei’s efforts may be futile to break Argentina’s economy away from the Peronist-socialist philosophy that has shackled it for decades.
The Trump administration’s lifeline has provided Argentina with quick access to stable currency, reassuring creditors, at least for a short while, that the government can pay its debts. The U.S. assistance is also aimed at stabilizing Argentina’s highly volatile peso, preventing a run that would cause the price of the currency to plummet and knock the economy into a tailspin right ahead of elections.
“It’s just helping a great philosophy take over a great country,” said Trump on Tuesday, according to the AP. “Argentina is one of the most beautiful countries that I’ve ever seen, and we want to see it succeed. It’s very simple.”

In a staggering turnaround, Argentina’s libertarian president, Javier Milei, has reversed the country’s free-fall into the economic abyss and led a recovery that is simply astonishing.
In November 2023, Argentina’s inflation rate had soared to 211.4% and the country had a poverty rate of 41.7%; 19.5 million people lived below the poverty line. Ironically, just before the November election, The Guardian <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/nov/08/argentina-election-javier-milei-economists-warning">wrote</a> about a letter signed by more than 100 economists warning that electing Milei would bring “devastation” to Argentina.
“Through an aggressive program of public spending cuts, eliminating bureaucracy, and reducing public sector jobs, he erased Argentina’s massive fiscal deficit, paving the way for a historic economic recovery,” Emmanuel Rincon noted in <a href="https://thedailyeconomy.org/article/mileis-economic-miracle-how-argentina-slashed-inflation-to-1-5/">The Daily Economy</a>.
By May 2025, the inflation rate had plummeted to 43.5%, and the consumer price index rose 1.5%, marking the lowest levels in five years. Wholesale prices dropped by 0.3% in May, the best number in 17 years.
“These achievements were no fluke,” Rincon wrote. “They stemmed from a clear strategy: fiscal balance, reduced public spending, ending monetary expansion as a financing tool, and economic deregulation.”
Alberto Cavallo, professor at Harvard Business School, pointed out:

Those five hostages were members of the opposition to Nicholas Maduro’s brutal regime. “The government of Argentine President Javier Milei allowed the five people into the ambassador’s residence in March 2024, when authorities loyal to Venezuela’s ruling party issued warrants for their arrest, accusing them of promoting acts of violence to destabilize the country,” The Washington Post <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2025/05/06/venezuela-argentina-caracas-political-opposition-us-rubio/9ee7c378-2ada-11f0-a724-3bc879c9f843_story.html">reported</a>, adding, “Since late November, the group had denounced the constant presence of intelligence service agents and police outside the residence.”

In January, Milei met with exiled Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia in Casa Rosada, declaring him the Venezuelan “president elect.”
“Venezuelans, we will also meet in the streets of our beloved country,” González Urrutia wrote on X.
After the meeting, the Argentine government called González Urrutia “Venezuela’s president-elect,” adding he “is under political persecution by the regime of dictator Nicolás Maduro,” the Buenos Aires Herald <a href="https://buenosairesherald.com/world/international-relations/milei-calls-urrutia-venezuelas-president-elect-as-tension-with-caracas-skyrockets">reported</a>.
Maduro was declared the winner of the July 2024 presidential election in Venezuela by the National Electoral Council, while the opposition claimed that they were the winners. The data indicates a crushing victory for the opposition, and the world awaits its recognition of defeat after years of socialism, misery, decadence, and death. In mid-February, Iowa GOP Sen. Charles Grassley —who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee investigating Credit Suisse’s historical Nazi connections — sent Milei a letter requesting him to unseal the records. “I continue to fight to shine light on the wrongs and injustices from this darkest chapter in history,” Grassley wrote. “This includes decades-long efforts to track the Nazis’ confiscation of all kinds of Jewish valuables and cash.”
Speaking of former U.S. Inspector General Neil Barofsky, who was appointed as the Independent Ombudsperson to comprehensively investigate Credit Suisse&#8217;s archives, he stated, “Despite the banks&#8217; best efforts at obstruction, Mr. Barofsky has uncovered a ‘significant connection’ between Credit Suisse and many individuals who helped Nazis flee Europe after World War II via ‘ratlines,’ which are monetary and logistic pathways used by Credit Suisse and other institutions to help Nazis escape justice and relocate to Argentina, among other countries.”
Barofsky <a href="https://www.wsj.com/finance/banking/nazi-ties-to-credit-suisse-ran-deeper-than-was-known-hidden-files-reveal-285ab620">had been hired</a> by Credit Suisse in 2021 after the Simon Wiesenthal Center found additional information regarding the possible Nazi connection, but he was fired when the bank felt he had gone too far. He was reinstated in 2023 after Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS) rescued Credit Suisse. In 2024, Barofsky told the U.S. Senate Banking Committee that UBS had fully opened its archives. Two separate panels said that Swiss bankers routinely ignored Nazis stealing Jewish assets and also later blocked families’ efforts to reclaim their money.
“The goal and motivation behind this work is to bring about justice and transparency,” Grassley continued. “Regardless of how much time passes, the truth is worth pursuing and the stories of this dark time period are worth telling and making part of the historical record for future generations. &#8230; I&#8217;m copying President Trump on this letter because my investigative work is being done out of profound respect for the brave and courageous men and women of the United States Armed Forces who fought against Hitler and the Nazis, and freed the courageous Jewish people from those evils &#8211; a sentiment that he would most assuredly agree with.”

On Thursday, at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Washington, D.C., Elon Musk waved a chainsaw bequeathed him by Argentina&#8217;s President Javier Milei at the event, proclaiming, &#8220;This is the chainsaw for bureaucracy.”
Milei has been cutting the Argentinian budget successfully; his austerity measures gave the country its <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/argentina-logs-first-financial-surplus-14-years-2024-2025-01-17/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">first budget surplus</a> in more than ten years in 2024. Argentina had a budget surplus of 1.76 trillion pesos, and the primary fiscal balance rose to a 10.41 trillion peso surplus.
At CPAC, Milei walked onstage with the chainsaw and <a href="https://apnews.com/article/musk-chainsaw-trump-doge-6568e9e0cfc42ad6cdcfd58a409eb312" target="_blank" rel="noopener">handed it</a> to Musk. The chainsaw was engraved with a motto Milei has embraced, “Viva la libertad, carajo,” which means, “Long live liberty, damn it.”

Musk <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2025/02/20/elon-musk-waives-chainsaw-before-giving-doge-update-at-cpac/79352970007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">commented</a> on why he had decided to throw in with the Republican Party, saying, “I thought we were sort of heading to a point of no return, really. And so that&#8217;s why it was so essential that President Trump won the election and that there be a Republican majority in the House and Senate, which, thanks to you, has been accomplished.”

“We need to restore the fundamental elements of what made America great, which is freedom and opportunity,” he said, adding later, “We&#8217;re fighting the matrix big time here. It&#8217;s got to be done.”
“I wasn&#8217;t really that interested in being political. It’s just like there was at a certain point no choice,” Musk <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/chainsaw-wielding-elon-musk-makes-dark-maga-appearance-javier-milei-cpac" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. “The actions that we’re taking, with the support of the president and the support of the agencies, is what will save Medicare, what will save Social Security. &#8230; That&#8217;s the reason I&#8217;m doing this. Because I was looking at the big picture here and it&#8217;s like, man, it&#8217;s getting out of control.”
“A country is no different from a person,” he continued. “Country overspends, a country goes bankrupt in the same way as a person who overspends usually goes bankrupt. So, it&#8217;s not like optional to solve these things, it&#8217;s essential.”
Criticizing the Biden administration’s actions on immigration, he stated, “You don&#8217;t actually have to assume some grand conspiracy, you just need to look at basic incentives. If the probability [is] that an illegal is going to vote Democrat at some point … then the incentive is to maximize the number of illegals in the country. That is why the Biden administration was pushing to get in as many illegals as possible and spent every dollar possible to get as many [as they could] because every one of them is a customer.”

Argentinian President Javier Milei gave Trump adviser Elon Musk a chainsaw backstage at CPAC in Washington, D.C., on Thursday.
During his 2023 campaign, Milei held up a chainsaw during a political rally as he promised to cut government waste and address the country&#8217;s inflation crisis. Musk, who has been preaching a similar message in the U.S., has been advising President Donald Trump on areas to drastically cut government spending.
Milei posted a video on X of Musk receiving his gift, writing, &#8220;Llegó la motosierra a DOGE&#8230;!!! The Chainsaw has arrived at DOGE&#8230;!!!&#8221; Musk then posed with Milei while holding the chainsaw.
The chainsaw was emblazoned with the phrase, &#8220;VIVA LA LIBERTAD CARAJO,&#8221; which translates to &#8220;LONG LIVE FREEDOM, DAMN IT!&#8221; — Milei&#8217;s campaign slogan.

Musk later appeared on stage at CPAC wearing sunglasses and a black Make America Great Again hat. Shortly after he walked out on the stage, Musk was followed by Milei carrying the chainsaw.
&#8220;This is the chainsaw for bureaucracy!&#8221; Musk said, holding the power tool up in the air.

Musk has been tasked by President Trump, along with the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), to look into multiple government agencies and suggest major cuts or even complete agency overhauls. The White House <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/white-house-musk-is-not-the-doge-administrator" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> earlier this week that Musk &#8220;is not the U.S. DOGE Service Administrator,&#8221; but &#8220;is a Senior Advisor to the President.&#8221; Musk, however, often touts DOGE&#8217;s work.
During a Q&amp;A at CPAC, Musk said, &#8220;DOGE started out as a meme, think about it,&#8221; referring to the Shiba Inu dog meme that became popular over a decade ago. &#8220;Now it&#8217;s real. Isn&#8217;t that crazy?&#8221;
&#8220;We&#8217;re trying to get good things done, but also have a good time doing it,&#8221; Musk said. &#8220;And have, like, a sense of humor.&#8221;
On Wednesday, President Trump <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/just-getting-started-trump-dishes-on-doge-life-advice-and-tax-cuts" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> that DOGE has &#8220;already&#8221; saved over $55 billion, adding, &#8220;We’re just getting started.&#8221;
