A senior Iranian Revolutionary Guard commander threatened that Tehran could unleash “asymmetric warfare” on Manhattan, warning that Iran has not yet exhausted its options in the ongoing war.
Brig. Gen. Mohammad Reza Naqdi, a senior commander in Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), made the remarks in an interview translated and published by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI).
Naqdi said Iran has so far fought a “traditional war,” using drones and missiles but has not yet entered what he called “asymmetric warfare.”
“Asymmetric warfare means that we carry out actions, and the enemy does not know where, when, or with what means,” he said. “Even if they realize what is happening, they do not have the means to deal with it.”

Naqdi said such tactics could mean “war in Wall Street and Manhattan,” adding that Iran could launch such an attack “at any time” using capabilities it has not yet employed.
“So far the need has not arisen and we managed to run the war and defend ourselves with drones and missiles,” he said. 
In an interview with <a href="https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/top-adviser-to-irans-revolutionary-guard-leader-sits-down-for-rare-interview">PBS News</a> last month, Naqdi similarly warned that Iran could target American economic interests if its missile arsenal were depleted.
“I will make this point, and this is more important than missiles,” Naqdi said through an interpreter. “If there comes a day when Iran has no more missiles left, that&#8217;s when we will be even more dangerous for America.”
Asked how Iran could become more dangerous without missiles, Naqdi responded that the United States has “thousands of economic interests throughout the world,” which he claimed could be “easily destroyed.”
At the same time, Naqdi claimed Iran has no immediate shortage of missiles. Asked about reports that Iran had entered the war with between 3,000 and 4,000 missiles, he said the country manufactures more missiles each day than it launches.  

“In a country this vast, we can make them wherever we want,” he said. 
U.S. intelligence estimated in May that Iran retained about 70% of its prewar missile stockpile and roughly 70% of its mobile launchers, according to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2026/05/12/us/politics/iran-missiles-us-intelligence.html">The New York Times</a>. 
When asked whether production was taking place deep underground, he said Iran uses “various ways to manufacture them securely.”
“Rest assured, even if this war lasts for years, until the last day, Iran’s rockets will be launched,” he added.
Naqdi also rejected the idea that Iran needs a nuclear bomb as a deterrent.
“Our nuclear bomb is the hearts of the people of the world that we won fighting oppression,” he said. He added that “Islamic values and the divine values of the Islamic Revolution are taking over the world.” 
Naqdi said there was “no need for nuclear bombs” or “slaughter,” arguing instead that prolonging the conflict could impose costs on the United States and strengthen Iran’s deterrence.
“We have to attain deterrence so that the enemy never dares to attack us, so we can live with security,” he said. “One way is to prolong this war until we get to the next term of the presidency and cause attrition, so that if anyone else wants to attack Iran, they will know there is a cost.”
Naqdi also defended Iranian attacks on non-military vessels attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. 
“When you’re in a state of war, any thoroughfare deemed to be a threat, we can control it,” he said. “Anywhere in the world where there is war, this law exists.” 
He said vessels could be carrying supplies for an adversary after leaving an area controlled by Iran.
Asked about the possibility of the United States using a nuclear weapon, Naqdi warned that doing so could trigger attacks against American military installations. 
“The morning after they use a bomb, all of America’s military bases around the world will be occupied,” he said. He argued that the world had changed since World War II and that other countries would not allow such an attack to go unanswered.
Naqdi has held senior positions within the IRGC’s Basij forces and was designated by the U.S. government in 2011 over allegations that he was responsible for or complicit in serious human rights abuses following Iran’s disputed 2009 presidential election.
According to the <a href="https://home.treasury.gov/news/press-releases/tg1076">Treasury Department</a>, he was involved in the Basij’s violent response to protests in December 2009, when up to 15 people were killed and hundreds arrested. He had previously headed the Basij intelligence unit, which was involved in interrogations and forced confessions.
Treasury also said Naqdi was involved with the Kahrizak detention center, where at least three demonstrators reportedly died from injuries sustained during detention.
The <a href="https://main.un.org/securitycouncil/en/content/brigadier-general-mohammad-reza-naqdi">United Nations</a> designated Naqdi in March 2008, citing his role in evading sanctions, not to mention his involvement in or support for Iran’s proliferation-sensitive nuclear activities and development of nuclear delivery systems. The U.N. removed him from the sanctions list in October 2023 after the sanctions expired, but returned him to the list in September 2025.
The European Union separately <a href="https://www.iranwatch.org/iranian-entities/mohammad-reza-naqdi">listed him</a> in 2008 over links to Iran’s nuclear program and again in 2011 over his crackdown on protestors.

An Islamic scholar at a Dallas mosque praised Iran’s slain former leader as a martyr and said that his blood will not go to waste.
Sayed Jawad Wahedi, the resident scholar at the Metroplex Organization of Muslims in North Texas (MOMIN), made the remarks during an August 21 Friday sermon, according to footage and reporting from the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI).
Wahedi said “the enemy” made a “huge and grave mistake” by killing him, arguing that martyrdom would ultimately advance the cause for which the former Iranian leader had lived.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in February during the opening phase of the major U.S.-Israeli offensive against Iran. A strike hit his compound, killing Khamenei and several family members and injuring his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, who has since succeeded him as Iran’s supreme leader.
“The enemy obviously has made a huge and grave mistake,” Wahedi said. “That when you live your life for Allah, purely for him, your death won’t be void, especially if you’re killed, especially if you’re martyred.”
He added that the blood of Khamenei “won’t go to waste.”
Wahedi told worshippers that “one of the best examples” of practicing God-consciousness in the modern era was “martyr Ayatollah Khamenei,” urging them to study his life alongside those of Islamic scholars, martyrs, and the Twelve Imams.
“One of the best individuals that we can remember is martyr Ayatollah Khamenei,” Wahedi said. “The position he had, so much responsibility, so much opportunity to make mistakes, so much opportunity for Satan to infiltrate his life. But when you look at the path he took, it&#8217;s filled with sincerity.”
Wahedi has served as MOMIN’s resident Islamic scholar since 2022. According to his biography on the <a href="https://momin.org/resident-alim/">mosque’s website</a>, he studied Islamic jurisprudence, philosophy, and Quranic studies in Qom, Iran, for nine years and has taught for more than 15 years. He also travels to Islamic centers around the United States to deliver lectures and sermons.
Wahedi has also praised Khamenei at an Islamic center in New York. On April 10, he spoke at a 40-day memorial for Khamenei at the Shah-e-Najaf Islamic Center in Brentwood, Long Island, according to footage documented by MEMRI.
Standing beside images of Khamenei and Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Wahedi again described Khamenei as a martyr whose death had advanced the cause of Islam.
“This great martyr Khamenei is indeed without a doubt, one of the greatest martyrs, and without a shred of doubt he is the greatest martyr in our era,” Wahedi said, according to MEMRI.
Wahedi argued that a martyr’s death could accomplish more than his life, saying, “Sometimes martyrs do things that their lives cannot actually do, but their blood can actually achieve something greater than even their lives.”

He also blamed the U.S. government and Israel for Khamenei’s death, describing it as an “attack,” an “assassination,” and a “terrorist attack” against a marja, a senior Shiite religious authority.
“The Shiites are mourning a leader, someone who lost his life for the children of Palestine,” Wahedi said.
Wahedi then praised Mojtaba Khamenei, who has yet to be seen in public since becoming the leader of Iran.
“We lost a great martyr, but alhamdulillah we have Ayatollah Sayyid Mojtaba Khamenei,” Wahedi said. “You will see his leadership, inshallah. He will be just like his father in some sense, even better, inshallah.”

Americans hitting the road for Labor Day weekend can expect an expensive bill at the pump as gas prices remain near record highs. 
The national average for a gallon of gas on Friday was $4.15, while diesel prices hit a record-high $5.85 per gallon. Labor Day gas prices will be more expensive than ever if the average holds above $4.00, according to fuel industry tracker AAA. 
Much of the current pain at the pump stems from uncertainty in the Strait of Hormuz amid the war between the United States and Iran. Prices across the country have spiked since the war began in February. 
“Continued volatility in the Strait of Hormuz has pushed crude oil prices in the $90 per barrel range. After a record-setting August, this Labor Day weekend is on track to also set a record at the pump,” analysis from AAA found. “Even though gasoline demand decreases this time of year, typically bringing down gas prices, this year is different due to the high cost of crude oil.”
National average gas prices hovered around $4.00 per gallon a month ago and sat at $3.20 just one year ago, <a href="https://gasprices.aaa.com/">according</a> to AAA. Before the war with Iran began, the national average for a gallon was about $3.00.
The average diesel price on Friday broke the record previously set during the early months of the Russia-Ukraine war. Rising diesel prices cause spikes across the board as the cost of transporting goods and equipment increases.

Oil is now flowing out of the Persian Gulf at higher levels than before the war with Iran, according to the Trump administration, even as the U.S. and Iran exchanged strikes this week.
Forty commercial vessels carrying roughly 18 million barrels of oil moved through the Strait of Hormuz Tuesday, marking a wartime high, <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2026/09/02/politics/latest-us-strikes-against-iran-marked-a-shift-in-strategy">CNN reported</a>, citing U.S. officials.
The latest figure follows U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright&#8217;s <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2026/09/02/energy-secretary-chris-wright-tells-cnbc-that-more-than-17-million-barrels-of-oil-transited-hormuz-on-monday.html">claim to CNBC</a> that more than 17 million barrels of oil crossed the Strait on Monday. He added that total regional exports have surged above pre-war levels when including oil from pipelines that bypass the strait. 
“With or without Iran, oil and gas will flow out of the Arabian Gulf region,” Wright said.
Before the conflict began on February 28, roughly 20 million barrels of crude oil and petroleum products moved through the Strait each day. That took a nosedive once Iran moved to restrict traffic through the critical waterway, making reopening the Strait a new central objective for the Trump administration. 
American forces have established a shipping corridor along Oman&#8217;s coast for tankers from allied Gulf states, with some vessels making the passage at night and turning off their tracking signals to make them harder to target. Iran has repeatedly threatened commercial shipping in the narrow waterway that carried roughly one-fifth of the world&#8217;s oil shipments before the war. 
The military said last month that it had cleared Iranian sea mines from the Strait. But Trump said Wednesday that Iran had attempted to develop missiles capable of deploying new mines, as he pointed to the U.S. strikes on Iranian military assets aimed at limiting Tehran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping this week.
The administration&#8217;s figures are higher than those from independent trackers. <a href="https://x.com/Kpler/status/2094728791557841128">Kpler</a> recorded just five confirmed crossings through Hormuz on Monday, down by half from the previous day. U.S. officials say the discrepancy comes from tankers moving covertly at night, sometimes with help from the Navy and with their transponders turned off.
The continued flow of oil has not, however, brought prices back to pre-war levels. Crude, which traded at about $70 a barrel before the conflict, has climbed to roughly $90 or more. The average price of gasoline in the United States has risen from about $2.98 a gallon on the eve of the war to roughly $4.14 on Thursday.
The war has also accelerated efforts by Gulf states to find ways to bypass the Strait of Hormuz chokepoint altogether. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said last month that new pipeline capacity could eventually make shipping through Hormuz “irrelevant.”
The United Arab Emirates is moving the fastest. Abu Dhabi is expanding the pipeline connecting its oil fields to the port of Fujairah, on the Gulf of Oman, allowing crude to reach the open sea without using the strait. Kpler estimates the project could raise the UAE&#8217;s bypass capacity from roughly 1.8 million barrels a day to 3.6 million, with the new line expected to begin operating in 2027.
Saudi Arabia is looking at expanding its East-West pipeline, which can already move as much as 7 million barrels a day from the kingdom&#8217;s eastern oil fields to Yanbu on the Red Sea. But increasing exports would require additional capacity at Yanbu&#8217;s terminals, making a major expansion a longer-term project.
The Iraqi government is considering routes that would connect its southern oil fields to Turkey and Syria, potentially giving Iraqi crude another path to Mediterranean markets without relying on Hormuz, though diplomatic disagreements between Turkey and Iraq have slowed efforts.
Still, analysts caution that the new pipelines will not replace the Strait&#8217;s capacity anytime soon, <a href="https://www.npr.org/2026/08/28/g-s1-140309/us-iran-middle-east-oil-pipelines-hormuz">reported Axios</a>. Goldwyn Global Strategies president David Goldwyn has estimated that projects expected to come online over the next several years would add only about 10 million to 12 million barrels a day of bypass capacity, compared with roughly 20 million barrels a day that moved through Hormuz before the war.
“I think that we have to accept that this crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, the constraints on exports are going to be a somewhat permanent feature for the next few years,&#8221; said Goldwyn to Axios.
And pipelines cannot solve the problem for every Gulf energy producer.
Liquefied natural gas, unlike crude oil, cannot simply be sent through oil pipelines. Qatar, one of the world&#8217;s largest LNG exporters, remains heavily exposed to the Strait because its offshore gas reserves are connected to the same giant field Iran calls South Pars.
“There is no bypass pipeline for LNG,” Goldwyn said. Qatar, he added, could therefore remain dependent on Iran for the safe movement of its exports, creating a risk that could eventually reach natural gas markets around the world.
The Strait has become a central focus of Trump’s campaign against Iran. On Wednesday, he took that focus a step further, suggesting on social media that it should be renamed.
“Should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT???” he wrote.

An Iranian dissident unleashed a blistering broadside at New York Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul on Tuesday, blasting the Democratic leader for “cosplaying” in a hijab to pander for votes while women in her homeland are tortured and killed over the exact same headscarf.
The fiery backlash erupted after Hochul donned religious headwear during a Friday visit to a mosque, which drew fire from President Donald Trump.
“Kathy Hochul, considered the Worst Governor in the Country, in a recent picture working hard to get the Arab Vote, even though they can’t stand her!” Trump <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/117197726086943631">wrote</a>. “Congestion Pricing in Manhattan is hurting her with everybody, but especially the people for whom she wears the hijab. The explosive response highlights the deadly reality Iranian women face every day under Tehran’s blood-soaked regime.
In June 2026, a court in Qom <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/iranian-regime-whips-female-singer-for-youtube-concert-as-mullahs-execute-protesters">sentenced</a> 28-year-old Iranian singer Parastoo Ahmadi to 74 lashes, a travel ban, and a ban on performing because she livestreamed a concert from a historic site without wearing a hijab. Eight of her crew members were also convicted for “offending public decency.”
Ahmadi&#8217;s brutal sentence came alongside a terrifying state-sponsored killing spree, with at least 22 political prisoners executed over a six-week span. Dissident Masih Alinejad ripped into the violence, declaring, “A woman’s voice scared them more than any superpower ever could. This is not a normal government. This is apartheid against women.”
The regime’s infamous violence burst onto the global stage in September 2022 following the murder of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who died in custody after being snatched by morality police for an &#8220;improper&#8221; hijab.
Her death sparked a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/its-a-revolution-now-iran-regime-murdering-scores-of-protesters-reports-say">full-blown revolution</a> across Iran. Insiders say the court completely ignored a formal abuse complaint filed by one of the female detainees before declaring the convictions. Defendant Ahmadreza Saeedi directly confronted judges in court, revealing he was brutally tortured during interrogation to extract a fake confession. Legal representation was virtually non-existent, with defense attorneys blocked from even reviewing the case files.
Exiled Iranian Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi blasted the verdicts as &#8220;brutal and unjust,&#8221; slamming the regime&#8217;s sham legal process and demanding the international community wakes up to the horrific atrocities.
The latest round of death sentences comes as the Islamic Republic goes on a terrifying execution spree. A trio of House Republicans is calling on the Trump administration to investigate Grayzone editor Max Blumenthal after he traveled to Iran for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei&#8217;s funeral.
Rep. Randy Fine (R-FL) sent the request Friday to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Attorney General Todd Blanche, co-signed by Reps. Keith Self (R-TX) and Randy Weber (R-TX), <a href="https://x.com/LauraLoomer/status/2093684165732708672/photo/2">according</a> to a letter obtained by Laura Loomer. The letter builds on an earlier request Fine and colleagues filed in July seeking scrutiny of activists Calla Walsh, Jackson Hinkle and Christopher Helali for attending the same funeral, which the lawmakers describe as an event organized and orchestrated by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, a U.S.-designated Foreign Terrorist Organization.
The letter accuses Blumenthal of using journalism as cover to spread propaganda benefiting America&#8217;s enemies, pointing to his past commentary on the October 7 attacks — the letter accuses him of denying the massacre&#8217;s atrocities and calling some details &#8220;manufactured&#8221; by the Israeli government — and a 2025 reporting trip to Iran. The lawmakers also flagged Blumenthal&#8217;s lineage, noting he is the son of Sidney Blumenthal, a former aide to President Bill Clinton and a confidant of Hillary Clinton, calling it a matter of &#8220;grave concern&#8221; that a Democratic-aligned family has produced someone the letter alleges has become &#8220;an agent of influence&#8221; for Iran.

Beyond the funeral trip itself, the letter presses federal officials to examine who funds Blumenthal&#8217;s outlet, The Grayzone Project, and argues Homeland Security had grounds to seize his electronics and question him about financing when he reentered the country. It closes by urging Rubio and Blanche to investigate Blumenthal &#8220;to ensure the American public is safe from this traitor.&#8221;
Loomer&#8217;s post noted the letter lands two days after Rubio announced State Department sanctions on &#8220;violent far-left terrorist groups,&#8221; citing a Bush-era counterterrorism <a href="https://www.state.gov/executive-order-13224">executive order</a>. A State Department <a href="https://www.state.gov/releases/office-of-the-spokesperson/2026/08/imposing-sanctions-on-violent-far-left-terrorist-groups">press release</a> accompanying those sanctions said the action targets &#8220;terrorists, terrorist organizations, leaders and officials of terrorist groups, and those providing support to terrorists or acts of terrorism,&#8221; and described the move as part of a broader effort against &#8220;transnational far-left terrorism.&#8221;
Blumenthal has not yet issued a public response to the letter, and did not respond to the Daily Wire&#8217;s request for comment. The State Department and Justice Department have not indicated whether they will act on the lawmakers&#8217; request — neither agency immediately responded to the Wire&#8217;s requests for comment.
Loomer, who has closely tracked reporters&#8217; attendance at the funeral, suggested the letter could mark &#8220;the beginning of the end&#8221; for Blumenthal and The Grayzone.

Some foreigners, and other irrelevant people, complain that Americans don’t care about their tiny, unimportant countries. And of course, that’s true, and for obvious reasons.
Why should we waste our time thinking about some weirdly shaped blotch on the living room globe when they can’t even speak English there like civilized people, and we could be focusing our attention on the mighty and virtuous empire that gave the world all the truly great people in history, like Babe Ruth and the Hardy Boys and Julius Caesar and so on?
But now and then, it is important to hear the latest news about some meaningless hellhole where we might be buying computer parts or killing people or… well, that about covers it, really.
So now, I’d like to catch up on what the Trump administration is doing to achieve our foreign policy goals, whatever the hell they may be.
Let’s begin with the war. This week, the administration announced it was going to unleash financial hell on our enemies by cutting them off from every possible source of income. Then, if that works in Canada, we might try it in Iran as well.

The Canadians objected to this in that girlishly adorable little petulant way they have, and so our president was forced to teach them a lesson by putting a 50% tariff on their major exports to our country, like hockey sticks and boredom. The Canadians — who really are cute when they’re mad — retaliated by continuing the negotiations in French so no one here could understand what they were saying.
In response, Trump declared he was going to change the name of Lake Ontario to Lake Screw You, Canada, whereupon the Canadians broke down and said that if we would just continue to name the lake after them, they would do anything we wanted, so we told them to stop talking with those stupid accents, because it’s just annoying. The deal should be finalized as soon as the White House can find someone who speaks French.
Meanwhile, in Iran, Trump has declared that the Strait of Hormuz is now completely under our control and will be moved to upstate New York and renamed the Strait of Screw You, Canada. The president says the Iranians are only days away from surrendering and admitting this whole Koran business was just a prank to get people to blow themselves up because they thought that would be funny. Trump says the end of the war would have been negotiated long ago, but we killed so many of their leaders that now the only Ayatollah left is a one-legged homosexual, who’s afraid if he steps down, the mullahs will throw him off a building before they find out about the whole fake Koran thing.
Finally, in the most shocking development concerning tiny little foreign people, the spare prince of England and his wife what’s-her-name have announced they are leaving the United States and returning to wherever England is because they thought they would be famous here, but instead no one cares about them.
The reaction in the U.S. was muted because no one cares about them, but in England, it was a different story. Due to one of their quirky, primitive indigenous superstitions, many people in England still believe it’s a real place and the things that happen there matter.
So The Daily Wire sent a reporter to London to gauge the reaction of the population and also pick up some Indian take-out. Our reporter interviewed one typical Englishman on the street, asking him, “How do you feel about the return of the spare prince and what’s-her-name?” The man replied, “Allahu Akbar,” then brandished a knife and chased our reporter around the Cupid statue in Piccadilly Circus, which disappointingly turned out to be just another street without any dancing elephants or acrobats like a real circus would have. Our reporter did manage to escape the attacker and ask another typical Englishman for his response, and the man replied with typical English honesty, “Allahu Akbar,” and ran him over with a truck.

Six months ago, the United States and Israel went to war with Iran to cripple its nuclear program and military capabilities. Six months later, Iran has suffered devastating losses — but the Islamic regime remains in power.
The war’s impact has extended well beyond Iran itself. The conflict has disrupted global energy markets and shipping, while ongoing negotiations have yet to produce a lasting agreement to end the war. With the fighting largely shifting from major military operations to economic warfare, the conflict has entered a new phase with no end in sight.
The campaign, originally named Operation Epic Fury, has delivered major military gains, imposed significant costs and left a long list of questions unanswered.
Here’s a look at the biggest achievements, losses and unresolved questions six months into the war.
<h2>Achievements</h2>
<h4>Ayatollah Khamenei Was Killed</h4>
The death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on the first day of the conflict was arguably the most consequential single strike of the war. Khamenei had ruled Iran for decades and was the central figure in the Islamic Republic’s political and military system. His death did not bring down the regime, but it removed the country’s most powerful leader and forced Iran into a succession process in the middle of a war. His son and successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, has yet to be seen or heard in public or take on the public role his father once played.
<h4>Iran&#8217;s Military Leadership Was Devastated</h4>
Iran has also suffered extraordinary losses among its senior military leadership. Israel <a href="https://www.idf.il/en/mini-sites/israel-at-war/briefings-by-idf-spokesperson-bg-effie-defrin/february-26-press-briefings/press-briefing-by-idf-spokesperson-bg-effie-defrin-february-28-2026/?utm_source=chatgpt.com">said</a> it killed dozens of senior Iranian commanders and officials in the opening strikes alone, including IRGC Commander Mohammad Pakpour, Defense Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh and other senior figures. As strikes continued, the Israel Defense Forces <a href="https://www.idf.il/en/mini-sites/iran-israel-war-2026/live-updates-iran-israel-war-2026/march-1-2026-iran-israel-war-2026-live-updates/?utm_source=chatgpt.com">claimed</a> it eliminated more than 40 Iranian senior commanders. On March 17, Ali Larijani, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/he-threatened-america-then-came-the-strike-his-words-now-haunt">was killed</a> in an Israeli airstrike. He had been accused of overseeing the January crackdown that killed thousands of Iranian protesters and had threatened the U.S. military and President Trump shortly before his death.
<h4>Iran’s Economy Is In Shambles</h4>
Iran entered the war with an economy already under severe strain, with inflation, a collapsing rial, and worsening living conditions fueling protests in December and January. Six months into the war, the U.S. blockade of the Strait of Hormuz has further squeezed Iran’s economy by choking off its ability to export oil. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/iran-economy-war-impact-oil-exports-inflation-unemployment-gdp-currency-2026-8">Business Insider</a> reported that Iranian oil exports fell as low as 65,000 barrels per day in May, down 69% from the 2.12 million barrels a day exported before the war. The IMF projects Iran’s economy will contract 5.4% in 2026, its sharpest contraction since 1988, while inflation could reach 68.9%. The rial has fallen to record lows, and Iran’s economic “Misery Index” reached 91.1, its highest level on record. The Foundation for Defense of Democracies estimates the war has caused roughly $144 billion in economic damage, equivalent to about 40% of Iran’s prewar GDP.
<h4>Iran’s Nuclear Infrastructure Is Buried</h4>
While several of Iran’s nuclear facilities were severely damaged by U.S. strikes ordered by President Trump last summer, the war provided an opportunity to continue degrading the program, targeting additional infrastructure and preventing Tehran from easily rebuilding what had been destroyed. The result is a nuclear program that has been repeatedly battered, with its ability to resume large-scale enrichment significantly constrained.
<h4>Navy and Air Force Neutralized</h4>
Iran’s conventional air and naval forces have been among the war’s biggest casualties. As of May, CENTCOM <a href="https://www.centcom.mil/ABOUT-US/POSTURE-STATEMENT/Al-Udeid-Air-Base/?utm_source=chatgpt.com">claimed</a> U.S. forces destroyed 161 Iranian vessels across 16 classes of warships, effectively crippling Iran’s ability to operate at sea. Before the operation, Iran’s air force was flying between 30 and 100 times a day. CENTCOM Commander Adm. Brad Cooper told Congress that number is now zero, with U.S. and Israeli strikes destroying or disabling airfields, aircraft hangars, fuel supplies, weapons stockpiles and aircraft. Cooper also said 82% of Iran’s air-defense missile systems were knocked out.
<h4>Iran’s Proxies Have Been Sidelined</h4>
One of Tehran’s traditional advantages has been its network of armed proxies across the Middle East, but that network entered the war significantly weaker than it was before October 7. Hezbollah did join the fight and launched attacks against Israel, but years of Israeli operations had severely weakened the group’s leadership and military capabilities. The Houthis also fired missiles at Israel, but their attacks were largely ineffective. Meanwhile, the fall of Bashar al-Assad in Syria in 2024 removed a key Iranian ally and severed an important link in Tehran’s regional network. The result was a much weaker “Axis of Resistance” that was unable to meaningfully relieve pressure on Iran or turn the conflict into a broader regional war.
<h2>Losses</h2>
<h4>Fallen American Soldiers</h4>
The war has also come at a human cost for the United States. According to the Pentagon’s updated casualty figures, 18 U.S. service members have <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/two-american-heroes-killed-in-iran-attack-identified">been killed</a> and another 624 wounded since the war began on February 28. Those killed include Maj. Jeffrey R. O’Brien, Capt. Cody Khork, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Robert Marzan, Sgt. 1st Class Nicole Amor, Sgt. 1st Class Noah Tietjens, Sgt. Declan Coady, Sgt. Benjamin N. Pennington, John A. Klinner, Ariana Savino, Ashley Pruitt, Seth Koval, Curtis Angst, Tyler Simmons, Cmdr. Gabriel Edwards, Sgt. Angel S. Rampersad, Sgt. Michael Emmanuel Swinton, 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan and Pvt. Isabella Gonzales. 
<h4>The Strait of Hormuz Isn&#8217;t Open</h4>
The Strait of Hormuz is still operating, but traffic remains far below prewar levels. In August, only a handful of commercial vessels crossed the waterway each day, compared with more than 130 daily transits before the war, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/hormuz-ship-crossings-hover-single-digits-data-shows-2026-08-21/?utm_source=chatgpt.com">according to Reuters</a>. And when traffic does return to normal, the strait’s administration could look different. Under the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/read-exactly-what-the-white-house-says-is-in-the-deal-with-iran">U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding</a>, Iran agreed to allow toll-free passage for commercial vessels for 60 days while working with Oman and other Persian Gulf states on the strait’s “future administration and maritime services.” A senior Trump administration official said the provision could pave the way for a longer-term arrangement, though Iran has so far indicated it wants to work only with Oman.
<h4>Key Allies Did Not Join the Fight</h4>
The war also exposed limits to how much support the United States could expect from some of its closest allies. Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Spain declined to join Trump’s efforts to secure the Strait of Hormuz, while Italy and Spain also <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/europe-pushes-back-us-military-operations-concerns-over-iran-war-mount-2026-03-31/?utm_source=chatgpt.com">restricted</a> U.S. military access to bases and airspace for operations against Iran. France denied Israeli aircraft carrying U.S. weapons overflight rights, while Britain limited its support largely to defensive operations. Trump publicly criticized Britain, France, Italy and Germany over their positions, leading to a series of diplomatic <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-to-confront-divided-west-in-g7-showdown">spats</a>.
<h4>A Heavy Price Tag</h4>
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth told the Senate Appropriations Committee in July that the war had cost an estimated $37.5 billion so far. NBC News reported that the Pentagon’s internal estimate had reached $80 billion to $100 billion when accounting for repairing damaged bases, replacing destroyed aircraft and <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/house/6046742-house-democrats-letter-iran-conflict/">replenishing</a> depleted weapons stockpiles. The administration also sought $67.1 billion from Congress in June, including $21 billion for munitions and $17.3 billion for operational costs. The United States has also lost a significant number of aircraft during the conflict, including at least four F-15E Strike Eagles, a KC-135 aerial refueling tanker, an A-10 Thunderbolt II, a CH-47 Chinook, two MC-130 transport aircraft and multiple MQ-9 Reaper drones.
<h2>Unresolved</h2>
<h4>Negotiations Have Dragged On</h4>
Despite months of negotiations, the United States and Iran have yet to reach a lasting agreement. The proposed June memorandum of understanding ultimately collapsed, and talks now appear stalled, with the two sides still divided over Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions and the Strait of Hormuz. Trump has also accused Iran of saying one thing behind closed doors and another publicly, saying he does not trust the regime. 
<h4>Pickaxe Mountain</h4>
One of the biggest unresolved issues is <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/what-is-pickaxe-mountain-and-why-is-trump-talking-about-it">Pickaxe Mountain</a>, a deeply buried nuclear-related complex near Iran’s Natanz facility that was not struck during previous U.S. attacks. Satellite imagery indicates construction and fortification have continued at the site, which some experts estimate is buried at least 100 meters underground — potentially deeper than the U.S. military’s conventional bunker-busting capabilities can reach. The International Atomic Energy Agency has never inspected the facility, raising questions about what Iran could eventually store or develop there. President Trump has publicly identified Pickaxe Mountain as a potential target, but for now the facility remains intact and could provide Iran with a hardened fallback for its nuclear program if it becomes operational.
<h4>Iran’s Nuclear Material Remains Unaccounted For</h4>
The fate of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile remains unknown. Before the strikes, Iran had more than 400 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60%, but the IAEA has been unable to determine how much survived, where it is or whether Iran has moved it. Trump has repeatedly called the material “nuclear dust” and said the U.S. wants it removed from Iran. Iran, meanwhile, has maintained that it has the right to a peaceful civilian nuclear program. During negotiations, Trump has discussed working with Iran to excavate and remove the potentially buried stockpile.

Six Months Into the Iran War, Who Is Winning?

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Monday launched “Operation Economic Outcast,” a campaign to cut Iran off from the global economy and punish governments, banks, and companies that continue doing business with Tehran.
The announcement comes roughly six months after President Donald Trump launched his military campaign against Iran, with Bessent saying the new economic offensive will target the financial networks and revenue streams that sustain the Iranian government, military, and security apparatus.
Bessent described the campaign as an “economic D-Day,” comparing it to the Allied invasion of Normandy during World War II, and warned that countries enabling Iran’s trade and financial activity will face U.S. sanctions.
“Our objective is to sever every economic lifeline that sustains this tyrannical regime until Tehran stands alone,” Bessent said. “President Trump has taken action that his predecessors have long deferred, and under his leadership, America is no longer managing the Iranian threat; we are ending it.”
The campaign marks a significant escalation in Washington’s pressure on Tehran. Rather than focusing solely on Iranian entities, the administration is threatening the international banks, companies, and governments that help keep Iran connected to the global financial system.
Bessent said the Treasury has mapped the networks Iran uses to smuggle oil and evade sanctions and will pursue a “zero-leakage approach” to cutting off those channels. The administration is giving countries and entities a chance to shut down activities identified by Washington, but Bessent warned that the window will be short.
“No one is above the reach of U.S. sanctions,” Bessent said when asked whether Chinese banks could eventually be targeted. 
He declined to name specific institutions but said any bank or entity that facilitates transactions that turn Iranian oil into revenue for the regime could face sanctions.
The first round of measures targets five sectors Bessent called vital Iranian lifelines: digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping. 
Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) is also sanctioning more than 60 entities, individuals, and vessels accused of helping Iran procure nuclear and missile technology, conduct cyber operations, and generate oil revenue.
Bessent said every branch of Bank Melli, Iran’s largest commercial bank, should be “shuttered and dark” and warned that entities facilitating money laundering for Iran would be cut off from the U.S. dollar system.
Trump has been calling world leaders with specific requests to end their interactions with Tehran, Bessent said, while State Department and Treasury officials are following up with governments and entities to outline Washington’s expectations. He declined to identify the countries involved or give a specific deadline, saying the United States does not have “infinite patience.”
Bessent said a “wave of sanctions” would begin immediately and predicted a major announcement involving a financial institution by the end of the week.
He pointed to the United Arab Emirates as an early example of a country responding to the pressure. The UAE suspended all trade with Iran last week following new Iranian attacks on the Gulf country, which has faced hundreds of attacks since the war began.
Asked why the United States was not simply imposing the sanctions immediately, given his comparison to D-Day, Bessent said Washington did not want to “blow up the global financial system” and instead is giving countries and institutions a chance to remedy what the administration considers bad behavior before imposing secondary sanctions.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei warned Monday that Tehran will retaliate against President Trump&#8217;s “Economic D-Day” sanctions campaign, including potentially targeting countries that cooperate with Washington.
“Any escalation of this situation will undoubtedly bring about consequences,” Baghaei said. “Our hands are not tied.”
