Ocasio-Cortez accused Johnson of “choosing to punish the American people,” declaring that she would not “enable it by acquiescing and enabling the behavior of bullies.” She added, “So it ends today,” and warned, “If I were Mike Johnson, you should be in that office negotiating with Hakeem Jeffries every damn day until we reopen this government.” Ocasio-Cortez also demanded, “I will not accept a measly one-year extension of the ACA,” and argued that “health care is a human right &#8230; the minimum wage should be a living wage in this country &#8230; [and] public colleges and universities should be tuition-free.”
“Does AOC, does she have both oars in the water here, thinking that the president is going to bow down to these demands?” Fox News’ Laura Ingraham asked Johnson.

The exchange began late last week, and the point of contention was a top-line number for the next funding agreement that must be reached by March 14 to avoid a government shutdown. When no such number was reached, Johnson suggested to reporters that was intentional.
&#8220;Leader Jeffries and others seem to be trying to set up some sort of government shutdown,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We were negotiating in good faith and trying to get the top-line number, but so far as I know, they’ve been sort of unresponsive the last two days or so. So I hope we can get back to it.&#8221;
&#8220;First of all, he’s full of s***. He’s a liar. And he’s a total shill for Donald Trump and Elon Musk,&#8221; Rep Jim McGovern (D-MA) said, pointing the finger at Republicans. &#8220;So he can blame anybody he wants … but we’re not walking away from the table. They’re not interested in hearing from us at this particular point. Maybe they will be in March.&#8221;
But when he was asked on Tuesday about McGovern&#8217;s comments, Johnson appeared unbothered.

Lawmakers in the lower chamber are <a href="https://x.com/CraigCaplan/status/1874510607917154774" target="_blank" rel="noopener">slated</a> to consider the measure on Friday after the House votes on the speakership. Rep. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/mike-johnson" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mike Johnson</a> (R-LA) is running to keep the gavel and has been <a href="https://x.com/MZanona/status/1874493683594371202" target="_blank" rel="noopener">&#8220;working the phones&#8221;</a> over the Christmas break while some members of the conservative House Freedom Caucus have been searching for an alternative pick or discussing possible concessions from the current speaker, <a href="https://punchbowl.news/article/house/mike-johnson-speaker-election-up-in-air/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to Punchbowl News</a>.
Near the top of the 36-page <a href="https://docs.house.gov/billsthisweek/20241230/119th%20Rules%20Package%20for%20Circulation.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rules package</a> is a provision requiring nine majority party members to initiate a privileged &#8220;motion to vacate&#8221; the speaker of the House. That would be a sizable increase from the current threshold of one member who could force a no-confidence vote that could lead to a speaker&#8217;s ouster. CBS News <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/congress" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that leaders of the Freedom Caucus and the Main Street Caucus announced in November that they had reached a deal on raising the threshold.
Lawmakers have tinkered with the threshold for the motion-to-vacate procedure multiple times over the past several years. A Democrat-led House <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/motion-vacate-key-sticking-point-gop-speaker-battle/story?id=96241364" target="_blank" rel="noopener">changed the rule</a> in 2019, as Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) began her second stint as speaker, to do away with a one-member threshold in favor of requiring <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/mccarthy-motion-to-vacate-rule-speaker/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a majority</a> of either party to bring a motion to vacate to the House floor after Republicans <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/oct/03/what-is-motion-to-vacate-speaker-mccarthy-explainer" target="_blank" rel="noopener">filed one</a> against then-House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) in 2015 before he eventually stepped down.
But the House rules package <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/motion-vacate-key-sticking-point-gop-speaker-battle/story?id=96241364" target="_blank" rel="noopener">approved</a> for the next Congress, agreed upon by a new GOP majority that secured then-Rep. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/kevin-mccarthy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kevin McCarthy</a> (R-CA) the speaker&#8217;s gavel following 15 rounds of voting in January 2023, restored the ability of a single member to trigger the process that could lead to a no-confidence vote in the speaker. And, by early October 2023, the House had <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/kevin-mccarthy-to-retire-from-house-after-losing-speakership" target="_blank" rel="noopener">booted</a> McCarthy from the role after the House passed a short-term spending bill to avert a government shutdown.
A weeks-long stalemate ended in late October 2023 when the House <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/house-elects-mike-johnson-as-speaker" target="_blank" rel="noopener">elected</a> Johnson as its 56th speaker. Following a potentially contentious election in which Johnson is vying <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trumps-return-to-white-house-could-get-bumpy-if-house-cannot-elect-a-speaker" target="_blank" rel="noopener">to keep</a> the speaker&#8217;s gavel at the start of the new year, Congress will then set its sights on a legislative procedure to facilitate the passage of President-elect <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/donald-trump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Donald Trump</a>&#8216;s priorities, the top House lawmaker indicated during a Monday evening <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XC5qGeDZK5w" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interview</a> on Fox News.
&#8220;We have to do a number of things simultaneously. The budget reconciliation process is going to be the key of the first 100 days, because in order to fix all the things that we&#8217;ve got to fix, we have to squeeze a lot of policy changes through that process,&#8221; Johnson told guest host Kellyanne Conway, a political strategist and former adviser to Trump.
&#8220;Not to get too deep in the weeds, but why that&#8217;s so valuable is it avoids a 60-vote threshold that&#8217;s necessary in the Senate under normal circumstances,&#8221; Johnson continued. &#8220;So we can move the Republican agenda, the &#8216;America First&#8217; agenda through reconciliation, but it takes a lot of coordination, planning, and executing those plans with precision to get that done. So you&#8217;ll see a lot of energy on that.&#8221;
Johnson went on to discuss specific policy areas that will come into focus, including border security, the economy, energy, a bid to &#8220;restore our stature on the world stage,&#8221; and tax cuts implemented as part of a bill signed into law during Trump&#8217;s first term that are <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2024/11/12/tcja-tax-cuts-expiration/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">set to expire</a> next year unless Congress renews them.
&#8220;A lot of big agenda items on the table, and &#8230; it&#8217;s going to take a lot of work to build a consensus among all the Republicans to get it done, but I&#8217;m absolutely convinced that we can,&#8221; Johnson said. &#8220;We&#8217;re going to stay unified, and we are going to get this job done.&#8221;
The House is expected to vote on the speakership on Friday. Johnson has Trump&#8217;s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-endorses-mike-johnson-for-house-speaker-a-good-hard-working-religious-man" target="_blank" rel="noopener">endorsement</a> and the backing of many prominent GOP colleagues, but at least a couple of Republicans are <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/house-chairman-urges-trump-to-get-on-phone-with-gop-holdouts-in-speakers-race" target="_blank" rel="noopener">holding out support</a> after yet another clash over <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/house-passes-last-minute-funding-bill-to-avert-shutdown" target="_blank" rel="noopener">spending</a>. A simple majority is needed for victory, but the GOP’s margin will only be a few members wide and it is unclear if any Democrats will support Johnson.
Johnson told Conway he thought that he did have the votes to prevail. The speaker also noted that he was &#8220;really humbled and honored&#8221; to be endorsed by Trump, contended they have &#8220;worked so well together,&#8221; and said they have &#8220;a lot of big things to do&#8221; moving forward.
&#8220;He recognizes that what we need right now — I think my colleagues recognize this as well — is a proven fighter and a true MAGA conservative, but also someone who can work with every single member of our very diverse House GOP, so that we can get President Trump&#8217;s priorities over the line,&#8221; Johnson added. &#8220;That&#8217;s what&#8217;s ahead of us. I think this could be the most consequential presidency and Congress of the modern era because we have to fix everything, and it has to start on day one. So, we can&#8217;t waste any time.&#8221;

Trump Endorses Mike Johnson For House Speaker: ‘A Good, Hard Working, Religious Man’

Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) expressed confidence over the weekend that House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) will win re-election as speaker next month after the new congress is sworn in.
Lawler made the remarks during a Sunday interview on ABC News&#8217; &#8220;This Week&#8221; with Jonathan Karl when asked if Johnson will be and should be re-elected.
&#8220;Yes, and yes,&#8221; Lawler said. &#8220;The fact is that Mike Johnson inherited a disaster when Matt Gaetz and several of my colleagues teamed up with 208 Democrats to remove Kevin McCarthy, which will go down as the single stupidest thing I&#8217;ve ever seen in politics.&#8221;
&#8220;With that said, removing Mike Johnson would equally be as stupid,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;The fact is that these folks are playing with fire. And if they think they&#8217;re somehow going to get a more conservative speaker, they&#8217;re kidding themselves.&#8221;
Lawler said that Johnson is &#8220;arguably the most conservative speaker that&#8217;s ever been elected to the office.&#8221;
&#8220;He&#8217;s done a great job keeping the conference unified, getting major things off the plate, and ultimately keeping the majority, which frankly despite the best efforts of some of these same people that are now calling for Johnson’s removal, we held onto the House because of seats like mine,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And I’ll be very clear, as I was during the Kevin McCarthy fight, I&#8217;m not going to bend to their will. So, if they think somehow that they are going to end up in a stronger position by removing Mike Johnson, they&#8217;re not.&#8221;
He said that President-elect Donald Trump was given a mandate to govern and that Republicans need to deliver since they control the House and the Senate.

Congressman Lawler: Mike Johnson Will Be Re-Elected As Speaker

President-elect <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/donald-trump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Donald Trump</a>&#8216;s return to the White House could face complications if the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/u-s-house-of-representatives" target="_blank" rel="noopener">House</a> cannot elect a speaker by the inauguration early next year.
On &#8220;<a href="https://www.foxnews.com/video/6366525597112" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sunday Morning Futures,</a>&#8221; Fox News anchor Jason Chaffetz shared a quote from senior congressional correspondent Chad Pergram explaining a scenario in which Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) could become acting president because the 91-year-old is <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/campaigns/congressional/3213569/senate-gop-leadership-shakeup-election/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">slated to return</a> as Senate president pro tempore, a position third in line to the presidency.
<blockquote>&#8220;The House absolutely, unequivocally cannot do anything until it elects a speaker. Period &#8230; This also means that the House cannot certify the results of the Electoral College, making Trump the 47th president of the United States, on Jan 6th.
What happens if the Electoral College isn&#8217;t sorted out by Jan. 20? Well, President Biden is done. So he&#8217;s gone, the same with [Vice President Kamala] Harris. Next in the presidential line of succession is the speaker of the House. Well, there&#8217;s no speaker.
So who becomes the president? &#8230; If the House is still frittering away time, trying to elect a speaker on Jan. 20, President Pro Tem of the Senate Chuck Grassley likely becomes &#8216;acting president.&#8217;
I write &#8216;likely&#8217; because this gets into some serious extra-constitutional turf. These are unprecedented scenarios. Strange lands never visited in the American political experience.&#8221;</blockquote>
In the coming days, the House is expected to vote for speaker. Rep. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/mike-johnson" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mike Johnson</a> (R-LA) is running to keep the gavel, but a handful of Republicans have <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2024/12/29/newt-gingrich-support-mike-johnson-speakership-00196103" target="_blank" rel="noopener">talked about</a> considering someone else for speaker amid frustrations with Johnson&#8217;s handling of certain bills, including <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/house-passes-last-minute-funding-bill-to-avert-shutdown" target="_blank" rel="noopener">spending</a> and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/house-overcomes-final-hurdle-to-send-fisa-reauthorization-bill-to-senate" target="_blank" rel="noopener">surveillance</a> legislation. A simple majority is needed, but the GOP&#8217;s margin is only a few members wide and so far it appears no Democrats will cross the aisle and support Johnson.
Some GOP lawmakers have warned of the repercussions for Trump if the House is unable to settle on someone for speaker.
&#8220;It&#8217;s going to delay the certification of President Trump&#8217;s election. It&#8217;s going to delay the start of his first 100 days in office, which is the most important time frame of his whole presidency,&#8221; House Oversight Chairman <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/james-comer" target="_blank" rel="noopener">James Comer</a> (R-KY) said during a &#8220;Sunday Morning Futures&#8221; <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/video/6366525597112" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interview</a>. &#8220;That&#8217;s when you get the most done historically. So, I strongly encourage President Trump to get on the phone and try to get everyone united so we can work together as a team and make America great again.&#8221;

Speaking to the <a href="https://www2.cbn.com/news/politics/speaker-mike-johnson-honors-god-under-difficult-circumstances-trying-be-servant">Christian Broadcasting Network</a>, House Speaker Mike Johnson stood up staunchly for his Christian faith and the idea that the U.S. is spiritually in a “battle of worldviews.”
Johnson noted the sometimes fractious nature of the Republican Party, pointing out, &#8220;Democrats typically tend to think more kind of like a union, they sort of stick together, they&#8217;re more monolithic. They move as a herd.  They&#8217;re more kind of social animals.”
“Republicans, by contrast, are rugged individualists,” he offered. “You know, we care deeply about our core principles and our philosophy, and we&#8217;re not easily moved. And that&#8217;s a great blessing usually, but when you&#8217;re trying to keep all those cats together and move in the same direction with a one-vote majority, it sometimes presents challenges.”
Johnson spoke of the challenge of facing a monolithic Democrat Party that controls the White House and Senate while Republicans cling precariously to a one-vote majority in the House, saying, “What some of my colleagues will privately admit, but not always publicly, is they understand that we have the biggest challenge that&#8217;s ever been presented to the Congress. &#8230; I have virtually zero leverage to be able to negotiate and get a better package. We&#8217;ve got to demonstrate to the American people that we can keep the train on the tracks, and so pulling a motion to vacate or removing a Speaker right now is exactly the opposite of what we need to show the country.”
Speaking of the harsh criticism he has received in the media for his devout Christian faith, he said, “I try to follow all the biblical admonitions as I do every day. One of them says you ‘bless those who persecute you.’ I&#8217;m getting a lot of practice in that right now and that is, ‘A soft word turns away wrath.’”
“We&#8217;ve been mocked and I mean mercilessly in the press,” he asserted. “They&#8217;ve tried to attack me and my family – my wife and children. And look, we&#8217;re undaunted by it. I mean that is going to happen if you stand for truth.”
CBN asked Johnson if he viewed America in &#8220;spiritual warfare terms.&#8221;
“I do,” he answered bluntly. “I mean, if you&#8217;re a Christian, that&#8217;s how you understand these things. We&#8217;re really in a battle of worldviews right now. It&#8217;s not even a battle between Republicans and Democrats anymore. It&#8217;s two competing visions over what kind of nation we are, who we are as a people&#8230; remember Marxism, communism, socialism are grounded in the belief that there is no Creator, there is no God. And that&#8217;s the essence. That&#8217;s the foundation of their belief.”

Others pointed out the fact that the White House&#8217;s steadfast refusal to first admit that there was a crisis at the border and then propose a deal that would actually have an impact on said crisis was what had led to the current stalemate — not Johnson&#8217;s response.

Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) lashed out at House Republicans after Tuesday evening&#8217;s vote to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, saying it was proof that former President Donald Trump was driving their actions.
&#8220;I don’t know who Mike Johnson is. It’s clear Donald Trump is Speaker of the House,&#8221; Moskowitz told Al Sharpton on MSNBC&#8217;s &#8220;Morning Joe,&#8221; arguing Mayorkas&#8217; impeachment would never get off the ground. &#8220;The only thing that’s going to change is his Wikipedia page.&#8221;
Moskowitz went on to attack his Republican colleagues on the foreign aid package that just passed the Senate, complaining that they had opposed both that and the recently-scrapped immigration deal because they wanted to deny Biden any possible victories. This, too, he chalked up to the House Republicans doing Trump&#8217;s bidding.
&#8220;[Trump] wants to change how the United States is viewed around the world,&#8221; Moskowitz said. &#8220;I mean, the idea that he wants to get back into office, and he wants to have better relationships with China and Russia, right, who are trying to destabilize the world should send literally shivers down Americans’ spine. You know, he talks about, Joe Biden is going to start World War II — by the way, that happened in the ’40s — but Donald Trump, what he’s talking about dealing with Russia, if Russia would start invading Europe, that would start World War III, by the way. Donald Trump is talking about that and setting the stage.&#8221;

Moskowitz seemed to be referencing <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-explains-nato-stance-after-negotiating-story-draws-controversy">Trump&#8217;s recent comments</a> about NATO, in which he indicated that he would oppose providing support for member nations that were not meeting their financial obligations to the body.
&#8220;When I told the 20 Countries that weren’t paying their fair share that they had to PAY UP, and said without doing that you will not have U.S. Military Protection, the money came rolling in,&#8221; Trump said in a recent statement. &#8220;After so many years of the United States picking up the tab, it was a beautiful sight to see. But now, without me there to say YOU MUST PAY, they are at it again. We are into helping Ukraine for more than 100 Billion Dollars more than NATO. We have nobody that they respect, and they insist on paying far less than we do. Wrong, NATO HAS TO EQUALIZE, AND NOW. THEY WILL DO THAT IF PROPERLY ASKED.&#8221;
