President Donald Trump took his strongest action yet against Chinese government forces looking to stifle freedom in Hong Kong, instituting dedicated sanctions against Hong Kong&#8217;s chief executive, Carrie Lam, and at least ten other officials over their decision to follow China&#8217;s lead and press strict, anti-free speech controls on Hong Kong citizens.
The Chinese government, last month, passed a series of laws &#8220;reclaiming&#8221; Hong Kong and implementing a series of oppressive restrictions designed to quell protests and subject Hong Kong citizens, long considered freer than their Chinese counterparts, to draconian Chinese rules.
The &#8220;sweeping national security law,&#8221; <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2020/08/07/us-sanctions-hong-kong-leader-carrie-lam.html">CNBC says</a>, bans literature &#8220;critical of the Chinese government&#8221; and allows China to conduct surveillance and arrests within the island nation, likely in violation of an agreement inked with the island city-state&#8217;s former controlling government, the United Kingdom, when the UK transfered control over Hong Kong to China in the 1990s.
Lam has also postponed the island&#8217;s parlimentary elections, set to take place in September, indefinitely.
The Treasury Department announced the sanctions Friday, targeting Lam by name for “implementing Beijing’s policies of suppression of freedom and democratic processes.”
“The United States stands with the people of Hong Kong and we will use our tools and authorities to target those undermining their autonomy,” Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said in a statement.
&#8220;Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has described the new law as an &#8216;Orwellian move&#8217; and an assault &#8216;on the rights and freedoms of the people of Hong Kong,'&#8221; CNBC added.
“The Chinese Communist Party has made clear that Hong Kong will never again enjoy the high degree of autonomy that Beijing itself promised to the Hong Kong people and the United Kingdom for 50 years,&#8221; Pompeo <a href="https://www.state.gov/the-united-states-designates-individuals-in-hong-kong-for-curtailing-promised-freedoms/">added</a>. &#8220;President Trump has made clear that the United States will therefore treat Hong Kong as ‘one country, one system,’ and take action against individuals who have crushed the Hong Kong people’s freedoms.”
The sanctions prevent Lam and ten others – including the head of Hong Kong&#8217;s police force – from accessing foreign accounts, &#8220;property and interests in property&#8221; that are located in the United States or its territories.
Lam told international media that she is not bothered by the crackdown.
“I have no assets in the U.S., and I don’t particularly like going to the U.S.,&#8221; she said. &#8220;If they won’t grant me a visa, then I will just not go there.&#8221;
China called the measures &#8220;clowning actions.&#8221;
&#8220;The unscrupulous intentions of the U.S. politicians to support the anti-China chaos in Hong Kong have been revealed, and their clowning actions are really ridiculous,&#8221; the government&#8217;s official communication office said in its own statement. &#8220;Intimidation and threats cannot frighten the Chinese people.&#8221;
Economic sanctions, though, could, and the Trump administration is already pursuing additional measures, including sanctions on Chinese companies that trade in American markets and appear on the NASDAQ and the New York Stock Exchange.

It remains nearly impossible to find any meaningful reasons for the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/khan-8-insane-things-that-happened-in-seattles-radical-autonomous-zone">rioting and destruction</a> all across the nation outside of entitlement, puerility, and boredom.
Since the initial outcry over the murder of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/williams-now-what">George Floyd</a> months ago, the motivations for most of these supposed protests have mutated into cynical tantrums masquerading as some <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/khan-5-radical-goals-of-the-black-lives-matter-organization-the-media-ignores">grand nebulous cause</a>. This has become all too apparent when the rioting here in America is thrown in stark relief with the protests in Hong Kong.
Writing for the <a href="https://www.nationalreview.com/2020/07/hong-kong-protestors-still-fighting-good-fight/">National Review</a>, Dmitri Solzhenitsyn recently detailed the grim, ongoing struggles in Hong Kong: 
<blockquote>Standing up for their beliefs against a superpower with no respect for individual rights and little regard for the essential preciousness of human lives, Hong Kong’s protesters are an example of bravery, creativity, and resourcefulness in the face of adversity. Whatever actions the allies of freedom are willing or able to muster against Communist China, advocates for Hong Kong’s autonomy should hope that the activists continue to resist…</blockquote>
Unlike here in America, the protests in Hong Kong are an actual demand for civil rights against the marauding influence of China’s woefully oppressive Marxist regime – the very same rights taken for granted to nauseating extremes amid all the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/watch-cnn-reporter-makes-excuses-for-rioting-looting">rioting and looting</a> in Portland and elsewhere.
The hopeless cynicism that informs the current protests in our nation is now legion. Anything to do with America and the monumental principles our nation was founded upon is met with open and adolescent hostility. A nascent desire to simply destroy all vestiges of America informs many of these protesters.
“America was never great” is a common refrain among these protests. Even <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/dc-protesters-chant-america-was-never-great-they-burn-us-flag-following-trumps-july-4th-1515488">Newsweek</a> seemed to express some dismay as protesters burned American flags in front of the White House on July 4th:

The <a href="https://www.nationalreview.com/2020/07/portland-protests-on-the-scene/">National Review</a> reported on a recent speaker in Portland’s Pioneer Square “energizing” a crowd of protesters by saying “America was never great, but we can make it great.”
Just as federal law enforcement experienced a <a href="https://www.dhs.gov/news/2020/07/31/portland-riots-read-out-july-31">brief reprieve</a> from all the chaos, protesters in Portland began burning Bibles as well as flags in a garish, nihilistic attempt at dissent according to <a href="https://nypost.com/2020/08/01/protestors-burn-bible-american-flag-as-tensions-rise-in-portland/">The New York Post</a>: “Protesters burned an American flag and a Bible in Portland, Oregon, sparking outrage just as weeks of violent demonstrations seemed to be coming to a close.”
Such open acts of defiance and hostility would immediately be quelled by force in <a href="https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/human-rights-violations">countless countries</a> around the world. <a href="https://www.latimes.com/world-nation/story/2020-07-10/this-is-a-cultural-purge-with-new-security-law-even-blank-paper-is-subversive-in-hong-kong">The Los Angeles Times</a> reports that protesters in Hong Kong are being arrested for simply holding up blank pieces of paper:
<blockquote>There were no slogans and no words, only blank white sheets of paper, quivering in the hands of a few dozen Hong Kong residents standing in a shopping mall, saying nothing at all.
The police arrived in full riot gear, waving a flag that read: “You are in breach of the law.” They arrested eight people, searched others and dispersed the rest.</blockquote>
Stranger still, many of the protesters here in America are getting paid unemployment for their grandstanding in the middle of the pandemic by the very same government they accuse of being so “oppressive” and “unjust.” The irony verges toward some kind of dire comedy.
Protests in America exist and are even encouraged because of the very principles of freedom and democracy our country was founded upon. Yet these protesters thumb their noses at the very ideals that permit all of us a dissenting voice in the first place by engaging in senseless acts of destruction.
It’s worth noting again that much of the media refuses to chronicle the mindless violence and mayhem occurring in our cities, often reporting with subterfuge and smokescreens. Reality offers a far different story.
<a href="https://www.city-journal.org/portland-black-lives-matter-protests-riots">City Journal</a> published a concise summation of the media’s downplaying of the violence in Portland:
<blockquote>The media have downplayed the primary reason for federal agents being in Portland: a neutered police department has ceded a portion of the city to violent anarchists, who have staged an ongoing riot—<a href="https://youtu.be/bDeohHg7okA">firebombing</a> the police station, physically assaulting officers, and causing tens of thousands of dollars of property damage. “Any form of resistance is a good way to push our goals forward,” a spokeswoman for the Portland Black Youth Movement told me.</blockquote>
These nationwide protests do not, at all, harken back to “the summer of love” that the likes of Seattle’s woefully inept mayor, Jenny Durkan, hoped for when her own city was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/khan-8-insane-things-that-happened-in-seattles-radical-autonomous-zone">hijacked by extremists</a>. Instead, they point to a fatiguing brand of cynicism devoid of meaning and purpose outside the stamping of petulant feet.
When compared to the protests in Hong Kong against actual oppression at the hands of China, one can’t help but harbor a profound embarrassment for our nation by all the supposed outrage and meaningless chaos surrounding it.

KHAN: When Compared To Hong Kong, These So-Called Protests Are Nothing More Than Cynical Tantrums

The British government announced early on Tuesday that it was banning Chinese-state telecommunications company Huawei from its high-speed 5G telecommunications network.
&#8220;The new U.S. measures restrict Huawei&#8217;s ability to produce important products using U.S. technology or software,&#8221; Media Secretary Oliver Dowden told the House of Commons. &#8220;The National Cyber Security Center has reviewed the consequences of the U.S.&#8217;s actions. The NCSC has not reported to ministers that they have significantly changed their security assessment of Huawei&#8217;s presence in the U.K.&#8217;s 5G network.&#8221;
&#8220;Given the uncertainty that this creates around Huawei&#8217;s supply chain, the U.K. can no longer be confident it will be able to guarantee the security of future Huawei 5G equipment effected by the change in U.S. foreign direct product roles,&#8221; Dowden said. &#8220;To manage this risk, they have now issued new advice on the issue of Huawei in U.K. telecomms networks.&#8221;
&#8220;So, this morning, the prime minister chaired a meeting of the national security council,&#8221; Dowden continued. &#8220;Attendees at that meeting took full account of the National Cyber Security Center&#8217;s advice, together with the implications for U.K. industry, and wider geostrategic considerations. The government agrees with the National Cyber Security Center&#8217;s advice, the best way to secure out networks is for operators to stop using new [inaudible] Huawei equipment to build the U.K.&#8217;s future 5G networks.&#8221;
&#8220;So, to be clear, from the end of this year, telecomms operators must not buy any 5G equipment from Huawei, and once the telecomms security bill is passed, it will be illegal for them to do so,&#8221; Dowden added.
&#8220;In addition to intense pressure from Washington, the Chinese crackdown in Hong Kong and Beijing’s lack of transparency on the origins of the coronavirus have added to concerns in Western capitals about using Chinese technology,&#8221; The Washington Post <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/britain-to-bar-huawei-from-its-5g-wireless-networks-part-of-a-growing-shift-away-from-the-chinese-tech-giant/2020/07/13/44f6afee-c448-11ea-b037-f9711f89ee46_story.html">reported</a>. &#8220;Britain said it will phase out over the next seven years the small amount of Huawei 5G equipment installed in recent months.&#8221;

The news came as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/mike-pompeo-sends-communist-china-strong-message-on-their-claims-in-south-china-sea">delivered</a> a blow to the Chinese Communist Party at the start of the week, informing the totalitarian nation that its claims in the South China Sea were “completely unlawful.”
In a speech from earlier this year, Attorney General William Barr said that China&#8217;s rapid advancement in trying to dominate the 5G market was the greatest national security threat that the U.S. faced. Partial <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ag-barr-highlights-greatest-threat-to-u-s-should-vastly-outweigh-all-other-priorities">remarks</a> delivered by Barr in February below:
<blockquote>5G technology lies at the center of the technological and industrial world that is taking shape. In essence, communications networks are not just for communications anymore. They are evolving into the central nervous system of the next generation of internet, called the “Industrial Internet,” and the next generation of industrial systems that will depend on that infrastructure. China has built up a lead in 5G, capturing 40 percent of the global 5G infrastructure market. For the first time in history, the United States is not leading the next technology era.
Much of the discussion on the dangers of allowing China to establish dominance in 5G has been focused on the immediate security concern of using communications networks that China can monitor and surveil. That is, in fact, a monumental danger. For that reason alone, we should mobilize to surmount China’s drive to dominate 5G. But the stakes are far higher than this.
It has been estimated that the Industrial Internet powered by 5G could generate new economic opportunities of $23 trillion by 2025. If China establishes sole dominance over 5G, it will be able to dominate the opportunities arising from a stunning range of emerging technologies that will be dependent on, and interwoven with the 5G platform.
From a national security standpoint, if the Industrial Internet becomes dependent on Chinese technology, China would have the ability to shut countries off from technology and equipment upon which their consumers and industry depend. The power the United States has today to use economic sanctions would pale by comparison to the unprecedented economic leverage we would be surrendering into the hands of China.
It is important to understand how 5G will enable a revolution in industrial processes.  Some Americans think that all we are talking about here is analogous to the shift from 3G to 4G in our wireless networks.  But we are talking about a change that is far more fundamental than merely increasing download speeds for movies and websites.
The move from 3G to 4G meant moving from download speeds of about one Mbps up to speeds of about 20 Mbps.  This increase made it possible to move the storage of data and some modest processing power off of devices and into “the cloud.”  Even this modest evolution of the wireless business spawned wide new fields of innovation, applications, and businesses.  Because the United States was the country that developed 4G, we were the country that captured most of the economic opportunity that flowed from that technology.
The jump to 5G is a quantum leap beyond this.  We are now talking about multi-Gigabits per second peak rates for both download and upload.  These fiber-like speeds, coupled with placing “Edge Computing” facilities closer to the users, means 5G is capable of extremely low latency – under 10 milliseconds.  With this capacity, the tiniest devices can have virtually instantaneous interconnectivity, and access infinite computing power.  With these characteristics, 5G becomes a real time, precise command and control system.
Devices of all kinds – some “smart,” some sensors collecting and transmitting data, and some actuators carrying out remote commands – can be dispersed and embedded in business and industrial equipment across a wide array of businesses, such as transportation, energy, finance, healthcare, agriculture, heavy construction, and so forth.  5G provides the command-and-control function for managing industrial processes.
As the world of 5G unfolds, we will be seeing not just smart homes, but smart farms, smart factories, smart heavy construction, smart transportation systems, and so forth.  And a host of new emerging technologies, in addition to AI, will become interwoven with and dependent upon 5G and the Industrial Internet, including for example: robotics, the Internet of Things, autonomous vehicles, 3-D printing, nanotechnology, biotechnology, materials science, energy storage, and quantum computing.
China has stolen a march and is now leading in 5G. 5G is an infrastructure business. It relies on a Radio Access Network (RAN).  China has two of the leading RAN infrastructure suppliers: Hwawei and ZTE.  Together, they have already captured 40 percent of the market, and are aggressively pursuing the balance.
Huawei is now the leading supplier on every continent, except North America.  The United States does not have an equipment supplier.  China’s principal competitors are the Finish firm, Nokia (with a 17 percent share) and the Swedish firm Ericsson (with a 14 percent share).
The Chinese are using every lever of power to expand their 5G market share around the globe. It is estimated that the total market for 5G infrastructure is $76 billion.  China is offering over $100 billion in incentives to finance customers’ purchases of its equipment.  This means that the Chinese can offer customers to build their 5G networks for no money down.
In an infrastructure business like 5G, scale is critical. The business requires huge investments in R &amp; D, as well as very high capital costs.  The larger a company’s market share, the better it can afford these costs.  Competitors facing a shrinking addressable market find it harder to sustain the levels of investment required to stay competitive.
Chinese companies start with the advantage of the largest domestic market, giving them instant scale, and as they add to this around the world, they will be able to invest more in their technology.
The more China gains ground as a supplier of 5G infrastructure, the more it will gain ground in all the constituent technologies that undergird 5G infrastructure.
5G rests on a stack of technologies, including semiconductors, fiber optics, and rare earth and materials.  China has moved to domesticate all these elements so it will not be dependent on foreign suppliers.
Semiconductors provide a good example of the ripple effect of Chinese leadership in 5G. China now consumes over half of the world’s semiconductors.  China has now started to replace U.S. semiconductors with its own.  Its scale in this field will permit it to make the investments needed close the current quality gap.  As China builds its scale in the semiconductor industry, it will place substantial pressure on alternative suppliers.  And, of course, semiconductors are indispensable to a wide range of technology and industries apart from 5G.
China’s success in 5G infrastructure is also translating into advantages in a range of new technologies associated with 5G.  AI is a good example.  As China captures more and more of the data generated by 5G, its AI products become better.
Within the next five years, 5G global territory and application dominance will be determined.
The question is whether, within this window, the United States and our allies can mount sufficient competition to Huawei to retain and capture enough market share to sustain the kind of long-term and robust competitive position necessary to avoid surrendering dominance to the Chinese.
The time is very short.  We and our allies have to act quickly.  While much has to be done, it is imperative to make two decisions right away.
First, we have to deploy the spectrum necessary for a robust 5G system in the U.S.  This is the mid-band spectrum called the “C-band.”
The FCC has been working hard to get the C-band spectrum out into the market through an auction.  It is critical to get this done within the next few months.  Even then, the U.S. will need 400,000 base stations to cover the nation.  This could take a decade or more to build out.
Recently, there have been interesting proposals to jump-start U.S.  5G by also making available L-band spectrum for use in tandem with the C-band.  By using the L-band for uplink, we could dramatically reduce the number of base stations required to complete national coverage.  It has been suggested that this could cut the time for U.S. 5G deployment from a decade to 18 months, and save approximately $80 million.  While some technical issues about using the L-band are being debated, it is imperative that the FCC resolves this question.
The bottom line is that we have to move decisively to auction the C-band spectrum, and bring to resolution the issues over L-band.  Our economic future is at stake.  We have to bear in mind that, given the narrow window we face, the risk of losing the 5G struggle with China should vastly outweigh all other considerations.
Second, we have to make a decision on the “horse” we are going to ride in this race.  Who is the 5G equipment supplier, or suppliers, that we will rely on to compete against Huawei around the globe, win contracts from operators, and blunt Huawei’s drive to domination?
It’s all very well to tell our friends and allies that they shouldn’t install Huawei, but whose infrastructure are they going to install?
If we and our allies – and other countries that do not want to put their economic fate in China’s hands – are not going to install Huawei’s infrastructure, we have to have a market-ready alternative today.
What is the customer looking for after all?  What is the operator looking for in moving from 4G to 5G?  It is a one-time decision.  It is a big decision.  You cannot afford to make a mistake, you need to know you are buying a reliable system that will perform, because you don’t have the luxury of tearing it out down the road.  And, you need a system that will allow you to seamlessly migrate your installed 4G base to 5G.  You need to know that your supplier has staying power – they are not here today and gone tomorrow.  They will be there for the long-haul.  Those are the products that are necessary to win contracts today.
There are only two companies that can compete with Huawei right now as 5G infrastructure suppliers: Nokia and Ericsson.  They have quality, reliable products that can guarantee performance.  They have proven successful in managing customers’ migration from 4G to 5G.  The main concern about these suppliers is that they have neither Huawei’s scale nor the backing of a powerful country with a large market, like China.
Some propose that these concerns could be met by the United States aligning itself with Nokia and/or Ericsson through American ownership of a controlling stake, either directly or through a consortium of private American and allied companies.  Putting our large market and financial muscle behind one or both of these firms would make it a more formidable competitor and eliminate concerns over its staying power.  We and our closest allies certainly need to be actively considering this approach.
Recently, there has been some talk about trying to develop an Open RAN approach, which aims to force open the RAN into its components and have those components to be developed by U.S. and western innovators.  The problem is that this is just pie in the sky.  This approach is completely untested, and would take many years to get off the ground, and would not be ready for prime time for a decade, if ever.
What we need today is a product that can win contracts right now – a proven infrastructure that network operators will make a long-term commitment to today.  In other words, we need a product that can blunt and turnaround Huawei’s momentum currently.
As a dictatorship, China can marshal an all-of-nation approach – the government, private companies, and academia acting together as one. &#8230;
If we are going to maintain our technological leadership, our economic strength, and ultimately our national security, we need the public and private sectors to work together and come shoulder to shoulder.
To our private sector friends, I would say that appeasing the PRC may come with short-term benefits, but I urge you to question the longstanding assumption that promises of market access are worth the steep costs. The PRC’s ultimate goal is to replace you with a Chinese company.
University and think-tank colleagues, do not allow the theft of technology under the guise of academic freedom. Do not allow the PRC to dictate your research or pressure you into ignoring diverse voices on controversial topics. Consider whether any sacrifice of academic integrity or freedom is worth the tradeoff.
To our allies, we applaud your efforts to stand up to China’s economic power. But we must do more, and act collectively.  Let us not forget our collective economic influence and power.
Throughout history, free societies have faced regimented adversaries.  At critical junctures, they have achieved the unity and purpose necessary to prevail, not because they have been compelled to do so, but because they freely chose to do so. We must make that choice today.

The National Basketball Association&#8217;s online store blocked people from being able to order customizable jerseys that featured &#8220;FreeHongKong&#8221; as the name on the back of the Jersey.
Sports commentator Clay Travis posted a video to Twitter that showed the NBA blocking the jersey when the name entered was &#8220;FreeHongKong&#8221; but not when the name was &#8220;FreeHongKonu&#8221; thus showing that it had nothing to do with the number of characters on the jersey.
The Daily Wire received the same message when attempting to purchase a jersey that stated &#8220;FreeHongKong.&#8221; The message that the NBA store auto-populates states, &#8220;We are unable to customize this item with the text you have entered. Please try a different entry.&#8221;

The Daily Wire was able to verify the majority of those with &#8220;F**kHongKong&#8221; being the only phrase that did not work when attempted which might be an indicator that the NBA intervened after seeing reports surface online. The NBA store also <a href="https://thefederalist.com/2020/07/13/nba-bans-custom-jerseys-with-freehongkong-but-allows-burn-jews-and-kill-cops/">allegedly</a> allowed other heinous statements to be printed on their jerseys, including statements advocating for violence against Jews and police officers.
Daily Caller reporter David Hookstead called the NBA store and allegedly confirmed with an employee that he could not get a jersey that stated &#8220;FreeHongKong&#8221; but could get a jersey that stated &#8220;KillCops.&#8221;

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver reportedly said last year that he was &#8220;proud&#8221; of &#8220;the sentiment&#8221; that people have who view the NBA as &#8220;the wokest professional sports league&#8221; and said that &#8220;political speech&#8221; from the players is protected by the league.
New York Times columnist Bari Weiss <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/07/opinion/nba-china-hong-kong.html">wrote</a> the following about the NBA last year:
<blockquote>Absolutely, that is, unless the subject of that political speech is the Chinese Communist Party, which presents perhaps the greatest strategic threat to our freedoms of any regime in the world. On that subject, Mr. Silver and the league he runs are shamefully silent.
A stunning instance of N.B.A. acquiescence to Beijing began on Friday evening when Daryl Morey, the general manager of the Houston Rockets, put out a tweet expressing support for Hong Kong’s democracy movement: “Fight for freedom. Stand with Hong Kong.” You might assume that the wokest professional sports league — this is a business, after all, that pulled its all-star game out of Charlotte, N.C., in 2017 because of that state’s anti-transgender bathroom bill — would see human rights, representative democracy and freedom of conscience as core virtues. But you would be wrong.
The Morey tweet, though promptly deleted, went viral in China, where outrage from sponsors and fans was fast and furious. But the swiftness with which the N.B.A. bent its knee to Chinese sensitivities was truly breathtaking for a league that prides itself on a “sense of an obligation, social responsibility, a desire to speak up directly about issues that are important,” as Mr. Silver has boasted. Perhaps the fact as many as 500 million Chinese watched at least one N.B.A. game last season and the N.B.A.’s business operations there are valued at more than $4 billion had something to do with it.</blockquote>
NBA star LeBron James cowered to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) after the incident, suggesting that those with pro-Hong Kong views were not &#8220;educated&#8221; and saying that there were &#8220;negatives&#8221; that come with having freedom of speech.
“We all talk about this freedom of speech, yes, we all do have freedom of speech but at times there are ramifications for the negative that can happen when you’re not thinking about others and you’re only thinking about yourself,” James said. “I don’t want to get into a … feud with Daryl Morey, but I believe he wasn’t educated on the situation at hand and he spoke. So many people could have been harmed, not only financially, but physically, emotionally, and spiritually.”
“So, just be careful what we tweet and say and what we do even though, yes, we do have freedom of speech there can be a lot of negatives that comes with that too,” James concluded.

China&#8217;s new draconian national security law for Hong Kong reportedly contains a section that bans every person on earth from advocating for Hong Kong&#8217;s democracy, which some have suggested raises concerns about extradition pacts China and Hong Kong have with other nations.
&#8220;China has long sought to crush organized dissent abroad through quiet threats and coercion,&#8221; Axios <a href="https://www.axios.com/china-hong-kong-law-global-activism-ff1ea6d1-0589-4a71-a462-eda5bea3f78f.html">reported</a>. &#8220;Now it has codified that practice into law — potentially forcing people and companies around the world to choose between speaking freely and ever stepping foot in Hong Kong again.&#8221;
Axios noted that Article 38 of the national security law states that it applies to those who commit the offenses against the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region &#8220;from outside the Region by a person who is not a permanent resident of the Region.&#8221;
Wang Minyao, a Chinese-American lawyer based in New York, told Axios, &#8220;It literally applies to every single person on the planet. This is how it reads. If I appear at a congressional committee in D.C. and say something critical, that literally would be a violation of this law.&#8221;
Reporter Bethany Allen-Ebrahimian, who is an expert on China and the author of Axios&#8217; report, noted, &#8220;This means that anyone advocating democracy in Hong Kong, or criticizing the governments in Hong Kong or Beijing, could potentially face consequences if they step foot in Hong Kong, or have assets or family members in Hong Kong.&#8221;
Allen-Ebrahimian also raised the concern that Hong Kong authorities &#8220;may begin to detain or arrest people of any nationality upon entry to Hong Kong for their actions or speech elsewhere — or even issue extradition requests for major targets.&#8221;
Taiwan News <a href="https://www.taiwannews.com.tw/en/news/3960108">reports</a> that a total of 52 countries have signed extradition agreements with China or Hong Kong. Some of the countries that have extradition agreements with Hong Kong include the United States, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Germany, India, and others.
&#8220;China has signed extradition accords with 55 countries, but 16 are not valid yet,&#8221; Taiwan News added.
The South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that a group of international lawmakers are calling on Western nations to end their extradition treaties with China in response to the new security law.
&#8220;The Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC), a bloc of legislators formed in June to coordinate an approach by democracies towards China, urged member countries to suspend their extradition agreements with Hong Kong after the national security legislation had &#8216;severely undermined the rule of law,'&#8221; SCMP reported. &#8220;Effective since last Tuesday, the law criminalised acts of secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces in Hong Kong with punishment of up to life in prison.&#8221;
The group&#8217;s 16 co-chairs “committed to coordinate efforts to ensure that no one has to face extradition to Hong Kong, where the rule of law is severely compromised following the imposition of the so-called national security law.”

China Bans Everyone On Earth From Promoting Hong Kong Democracy, Expert Says. China Has Extradition Pacts With Dozens Of Nations.

A Hong Kong lawmaker is warning that China is setting up a “global fight” with its new draconian national security law.
The Chinese Communist Party <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/weapon-of-repression-china-passes-hong-kong-national-security-law-cracking-down-on-dissent">forced</a> the law on Hong Kong last week, essentially outlawing calls from activists to free the territory from the authoritarian state. Chinese and Hong Kong security forces have already begun arresting protesters under the law’s expansive application.
The law also threatens people that speak out against the CCP from outside of China’s territory. Article 38 of the law says, “This Law shall apply to offenses under this Law committed against the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region from outside the Region by a person who is not a permanent resident of the Region,” according to <a href="https://www.axios.com/china-hong-kong-law-global-activism-ff1ea6d1-0589-4a71-a462-eda5bea3f78f.html?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=newsletter_axiosam&amp;stream=top">Axios</a>.
The law, as written, applies to everyone in the world. Donald Clarke, a professor of Chinese law at George Washington University, described the repercussions of the law in a July 3 <a href="https://thechinacollection.org/hong-kongs-national-security-law-dangerous-article-38/?subscribe=success#blog_subscription-2">blog post</a>:
<blockquote>The alarming thing about the NSL is that, on its face at least, it provides for criminal jurisdiction over everyone on the planet for an act committed anywhere on the planet (Article 38). This is much broader than the purported reach of the PRC’s Criminal Law. Article 38 does not contain the limitation that the act in question must be serious enough to warrant a given minimum punishment and that it must also be a crime in the place committed. Thus, it is clear that an act that would violate the NSL if committed in Hong Kong will also violate it, and subject the actor to potential liability, if committed outside Hong Kong, even if the actor is not a Hong Kong resident or PRC citizen and has absolutely no connection with either Hong Kong or the PRC more broadly.</blockquote>
Nathan Law, a Hong Kong lawmaker who resisted the CCP’s influence over the Hong Kong government and fled the city last week, said, “One of the main purposes of having the national security law is to quash the international front of the movement,” according to Axios.
“For Hong Kong, we have to understand that it is the foreground of a very global fight, authoritarianism versus democracy,” Law told Axios.
For most of the world, the law is impossible to enforce despite its sweeping language. The law can have severe repercussions for people who have fled the city, however, and one day wish to return or still have connections to Hong Kong, such as assets or family members.
Chinese President Xi Jinping signed the sweeping national security bill into law on June 30. The bill purportedly bans acts of sedition, subversion, and terrorism, and Chinese authorities have since used it to crack down on protesters calling for a free and independent Hong Kong. Violations of the law carry a maximum sentence of life in prison. The National People’s Congress Standing Committee (NPCSC), China’s top legislative body, reportedly passed the law in a 162-0 vote hours before it was signed.

Hong Kong Expat Says China Is Setting Up ‘Global Fight’ Between ‘Authoritarianism Versus Democracy’

Numerous books have been pulled from the shelves of libraries in Hong Kong after the Chinese Communist Party&#8217;s (CCP) new Hong Kong security law went into effect last week.
&#8220;Books written by prominent Hong Kong democracy activists have started to disappear from the city&#8217;s libraries, online records show, days after Beijing imposed a draconian national security law on the finance hub,&#8221; Voice of America <a href="https://www.voanews.com/east-asia-pacific/voa-news-china/democracy-books-disappear-hong-kong-libraries">reported</a>. &#8220;Among the authors whose titles are no longer available are Joshua Wong, one of the city&#8217;s most prominent young activists, and Tanya Chan, a well-known pro-democracy lawmaker.&#8221;
Experts and activists say that the removal of the books increases concerns that the Chinese Communist Party will use the new law to censor political statements that dissent from the oppressive political party, which has been responsible for the deaths of <a href="https://www.heritage.org/asia/commentary/the-legacy-mao-zedong-mass-murder">tens of millions</a> of its own citizens since its inception.
The new security law &#8220;criminalizes four categories of crimes, including secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign or external forces to endanger national security,&#8221; The Wall Street Journal <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/hong-kong-libraries-pull-books-for-review-under-chinas-security-law-11593963424">reported</a>. &#8220;In contrast to mainland China, Hong Kong historically has had robust protections on free speech, and the city has been a haven for publishers and journalists. However, episodes such as the disappearance of several booksellers who sold titles in Hong Kong critical of China’s leaders have heightened anxieties that China is trying to import its style of social control into the city.&#8221;

China expert Gordon Chang told Fox News on Sunday that China&#8217;s new security law appeared to give &#8220;China the ability to imprison anybody that it wants.&#8221;
&#8220;And, indeed, you don&#8217;t even have to go to Hong Kong to be at risk, because Hong Kong and China have extradition treaties with other countries,&#8221; Gordon said. &#8220;And Article 38 of this law says that any comment, any statement on foreign soil by a foreigner is a violation of the national security law if it advocates succession, terrorism, collusion, sedition, all the rest of it. &#8221;
&#8220;China is saying that it not only demands the total obedience of people in China. It demands the total obedience of people in Hong Kong,&#8221; Chang added. &#8220;China demands total obedience from everybody else in the world. It can&#8217;t enforce that right now, but that really is the message.&#8221;

The United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) has become notorious for opposing basic human rights and siding with communist nations and dictatorships since so many of these countries have been allowed a seat on the council.
The latest example of the council’s flippancy toward human rights came this weekend when delegates from Cuba delivered a statement praising China’s adoption of a national security law imposed on Hong Kong. The United Kingdom offered a statement condemning China’s new law. As has come to be expected with the HRC, which allowed China to join its ranks on April 1 of this year, the council overwhelmingly supported Cuba’s statement praising China’s actions toward Hong Kong. In total, 53 countries ended up backing China’s new law while 27 condemned it.
The International Business Times <a href="https://www.ibtimes.com/list-53-countries-support-chinas-hong-kong-national-security-law-3004962">reported</a> that critics of China’s new law “cited harsh penalties for vaguely defined political crimes and claimed it was the death knell for Hong Kong&#8217;s autonomy.” Axios obtained <a href="https://www.axios.com/countries-supporting-china-hong-kong-law-0ec9bc6c-3aeb-4af0-8031-aa0f01a46a7c.html">a list</a> of the countries that supported or opposed China’s actions:

Axios’ Bethany Allen-Ebrahimian explained that “Beijing has effectively leveraged the UN Human Rights Council to endorse the very activities it was created to oppose.&#8221; Further, the outlet reported, at least 43 of the countries that supported Beijing “have signed onto China’s Belt and Road infrastructure project.” Many of the countries in Africa that praised China’s actions are, according to Axios, “trying to renegotiate debt payments to China amid sharp COVID-related downturns.”
The outlet also explained that countries who have challenged China in the past have paid a price, including Australia and Canada.
“After pushing for an independent probe into China&#8217;s initial response to the coronavirus, Australia found itself in a costly trade dispute with its largest trading partner,” Axios reported. “Two Canadian citizens are still being held in China, meanwhile, after Canada arrested Huawei&#8217;s CFO on behalf of the U.S.”
IBT explained that many thought the announcement that China was joining the HRC was an April’s Fools Day prank:

Unfortunately, it was not, and the appointment has sparked protests by international human rights activists.</blockquote>
The U.S. withdrew from the HRC in June 2018, calling the council “hypocritical and self-serving.”

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver expressed hope that his league and the Chinese Communist Part (CCP) “can find mutual respect for each other” despite Beijing’s “different” views.
Silver appeared to downplay China’s numerous and ongoing human rights violations committed by its aggressive, authoritarian government in an interview with Time Magazine released on Monday. Time interviewed Silver as part of its Time 100 Talks series with some of the most influential people in U.S. politics and culture.
Asked if the NBA’s relationship with Beijing has improved since a team manager offended the CCP earlier this year, Silver responded, “I feel it has.” He noted that the state-owned distribution platform Tencent broadcasts NBA games across China. The league is dependent on the Chinese government to maintain agreements <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nba/2019/10/09/nba-china-hong-kong-whats-at-stake/3912447002/">generating</a> at least $500 million annually for the league, and likely much more.
“You know, we’ve continued a dialogue with the Chinese, with our business partners there, [and] in certain cases, with certain government officials. And, you know, we’re just going to keep at it,” Silver said.
“We’ve had a long history in China. and certainly, this is a bump in the road in our relations. Obviously, I think we all understand each other,” Silver continued. “You know, as I’ve said before, we come to China with a certain set of core American values and principles. I understand also they have a different form of government, and they have a different view how things have been done, how things should be done. Hopefully, we can find mutual respect for each other.”

Silver’s interview aired hours after China <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/weapon-of-repression-china-passes-hong-kong-national-security-law-cracking-down-on-dissent">enacted</a> expansive legislation purportedly outlawing acts of terrorism and sedition in Hong Kong. On Wednesday, Chinese authorities used the law to justify cracking down on thousands of protesters. Silver and the NBA are showing off the league’s values by <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/nba-to-paint-black-lives-matter-on-sides-of-disney-courts-allow-players-to-put-social-justice-messages-on-jerseys">painting</a> “Black Lives Matter” on the sidelines of courts being used to restart the 2020 season. NBA players will also be allowed to place social justice messages on their uniforms. The symbolism is to show the league’s commitment to furthering social justice and solving racial inequality.
The NBA <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/nba-commissioner-we-certainly-didnt-apologize-to-the-chinese-government">capitulated</a> to China last year after Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey tweeted out a statement of solidarity with protests happening in Hong Kong at the time against Chinese attempts to establish control over the region. The tweet prompted backlash from Chinese authorities against the league, which Silver responded to by whitewashing China’s human rights record and distancing himself and the league from Morey’s statement and the pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong.

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) began cracking down on Hong Kong protesters on Wednesday after China&#8217;s government imposed a new national security law that cemented Beijing&#8217;s control over the city.
On Tuesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/weapon-of-repression-china-passes-hong-kong-national-security-law-cracking-down-on-dissent">signed</a> into a law a bill banning acts of sedition, subversion, and terrorism, a bill passed by China’s top legislative body by a vote of 162-0. Violating the new law could result in a sentence of life in prison.
In response, hundreds of protesters took to the streets in Hong Kong.
&#8220;Hundreds turned out to protest the legislation in the busy shopping district of Causeway Bay but were met with a heavy security presence,&#8221; <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/01/china/hong-kong-national-security-law-july-1-intl-hnk/index.html">CNN</a> reported. &#8220;Riot police fired pepper spray into the crowd, kettled and dispersed protesters, and deployed water cannons.&#8221;
The Hong Kong Police Force touted the first arrests under the new laws, tweeted out photographs and writing: &#8220;A man was arrested for holding a #HKIndependence flag in #CausewayBay, Hong Kong, violating the #NationalSecurityLaw. This is the first arrest made since the law has come into force.&#8221;
The man who was arrested appears to have simply been carrying a flag that stated: &#8220;Hong Kong Independence.&#8221;

China Begins Brutal Crackdown Under New Law In Hong Kong, Starts Arresting Those Calling For Freedom

China has passed a sweeping national security law that human rights activists are describing as a &#8220;weapon of repression to be used against government critics&#8221; in Hong Kong, as the Chinese Communist Party continues to tighten its grip on the region.
Chinese President Xi Jinping signed into a law on Tuesday a bill banning acts of sedition, subversion, and terrorism, according to the <a href="https://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/politics/article/3091241/national-security-law-chinese-president-xi-jinping-signs">South China Morning Post</a>. The National People’s Congress Standing Committee (NPCSC), China’s top legislative body, reportedly passed the legislation in a 162-0 vote on Tuesday morning.
Violation of the law carries a maximum sentence of life in prison. NPCSC Chairman Li Zhanshu said the law’s unanimous passage is a “reflection of the will of comrades in the whole of the nation including Hong Kong.”
Joshua Rosenzweig, who heads the China team of the international human rights group Amnesty International, said the bill’s passage has sparked fear that “Beijing has calculatingly created a weapon of repression to be used against government critics, including people who are merely expressing their views or protesting peacefully,” according to <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/29/china/hong-kong-national-security-law-passed-intl-hnk/index.html">CNN</a>.
The law, consisting of six articles and 66 clauses, has not been made public, and a draft copy has yet to be provided to officials in Hong Kong. The legislation is set to take effect July 1 without Hong Kongers knowing much of anything about what it says. The passage of the bill is another extensive erosion of the civil and political liberties of Hong Kong’s citizens.
Hong Kong&#8217;s Chief Executive Carrie Lam, widely viewed as a mouthpiece for the Chinese Communist Party, defended the bill in remarks to the United Nations Human Rights Council
“The legislation will not undermine ‘One Country, Two Systems’ and Hong Kong’s high-degree of autonomy,” Lam <a href="https://www.scmp.com/video/china/3091249/carrie-lam-defends-national-security-law-speech-united-nations">said</a>. “Hong Kong is a free and diversified society. We respect differences of opinion and thrive on reaching consensus, but the One Country principle is non-negotiable and could not be compromised as without one country, two systems will stand on shifty ground and Hong Kong’s stability and prosperity will be at risk.”
Joshua Wong, who led pro-democracy protests against China in Hong Kong six years ago, said the new law is the beginning of Beijing’s “reign of terror” over the region.
“It marks the end of Hong Kong that the world knew before,” Wong said on Twitter. “From now on, #Hongkong enters a new era of reign of terror, just like #Taiwan’s White Terror period in history, with arbitrary prosecutions, black jails, secret trials, forced confessions, media clampdowns and political censorship.”
“With sweeping powers and ill-defined law, the city will turn into a #secretpolicestate. #HongKongProtesters now face high possibilities of being extradited to China’s courts for trials and life sentences,” Wong continued. “However, even under the ill wind of #China’s direct authoritarian rule, #Hongkongers will continue to fight for our freedoms and democracy for the city’s next generations. ‘Weapon Of Repression’: China Passes Hong Kong National Security Law Cracking Down On Dissent

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced Wednesday that the United Kingdom could extend as many as 3 million visas to Hong Kong residents if China follows through with plans to enact a draconian legal measure subsuming control of the island city-state&#8217;s government and imposing their own law enforcement.
The <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/03/world/europe/boris-johnson-uk-hong-kong-china.html?campaign_id=60&amp;emc=edit_na_20200603&amp;instance_id=0&amp;nl=breaking-news&amp;ref=cta&amp;regi_id=72371590&amp;segment_id=29967&amp;user_id=f7666a89be7cdb84aefe6d23282c6536">New York Times report</a>s that Johnson opened the doors to the 3 million Hong Kong residents who are eligible to live and work in the U.K., full access. Many Hong Kong residents are eligible for a British &#8220;overseas passport&#8221; because they lived on the island at the time the U.K. returned control of Hong Kong back to China under the promise that China would allow Hong Kong to remain a democratic country.
&#8220;Describing what he proposed as one of the biggest changes in Britain’s visa regime in history, Mr. Johnson said the 350,000 Hong Kong residents who hold British national overseas passports, as well as some 2.5 million who are eligible to apply for them, would be granted 12-month renewable visas that would put them on a path to citizenship,&#8221; the Times said, basing its report on an op-ed by Johnson printed in the U.K.&#8217;s Telegraph.
Johnson did not specify how the immigration process would work or whether Hong Kong residents would be fast-tracked or treated like political refugees. He also made no mention of what action, on the part of China, would trigger the immigration changes &#8212; but the plans, he said, are in place.
“Many people in Hong Kong fear that their way of life — which China pledged to uphold — is under threat,” Johnson wrote. “If China proceeds to justify their fears, then Britain could not in good conscience shrug our shoulders and walk away; instead we will honor our obligations and provide an alternative.”
China decided, in late May, to take an aggressive approach to ongoing political unrest in Hong Kong &#8212; unrest that stems from a Chinese effort, in mid-2019, to force Hong Kong&#8217;s Chinese-friendly government, and its chief executive, Carrie Lam, to pass a measure allowing Chinese law enforcement to identify, conduct surveillance on, and even arrest Chinese &#8220;dissidents&#8221; living in Hong Kong.
That measure set off months of increasingly violent protests, many involving a majority of Hong Kong&#8217;s 7 million people. In some cases, as many as 3 million Hong Kong residents gathered to oppose the bill.
Lam was eventually forced to table the legislation, but that did little to quell concern. Using Hong Kong&#8217;s inability to control the unrest as an excuse, and the coronavirus-related lockdown as cover, China began moving in to handle the protests on their own, eventually proposing a law, which passed the Chinese legislature last week, allowing China to take over law enforcement inside Hong Kong.
The U.K. and the United States have been united in their opposition to the measure, with the U.S. calling the law a violation of China&#8217;s 1980s, United Nations-ratified treaty with Britain, and proposing major tariffs and trade consequences. Wednesday&#8217;s announcement by Johnson, however, is the west&#8217;s most aggressive move by far.

U.K. Government Proposes Giving British Citizenship To 3 Million Hong Kong Residents If China

Chinese officials tried to use violence, which spread across the United States over the weekend, to troll President Donald Trump, whose administration, just last week, took a strong stand against China&#8217;s decision to exert political control over Hong Kong.
In a series of social media posts over the weekend, Chinese information ministers and media loyalists tried desperately to connect the unrest in cities like Minneapolis, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., to anti-Chinese, pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, which China is now trying to extinguish with a series of draconian legislative measures.
<a href="https://www.bloombergquint.com/global-economics/china-trolls-u-s-over-riots-after-trump-criticized-hong-kong">Bloomberg reports</a> that &#8220;China’s foreign ministry and state media seized the opportunity to fire back at Trump. Chinese propaganda outlets played up scenes from the U.S. of violence, burning buildings, harsh police responses, and protesters decrying government as part of a broader narrative that western democracies are regularly plagued by chaos and unrest that would never be permitted in the mainland.&#8221;
In some cases, Chinese officials got involved in the trolling directly. Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying even retweeted a State department official urging global democracies to stand firm against Chinese communism and added the quote, &#8220;I can&#8217;t breathe&#8221; &#8212; an obvious reference to George Floyd, whose death at the hands of Minneapolis police sparked the nationwide protests.
Perennial Chinese social media gadfly, Zhao Lijian, who was, last week, censored by Twitter for spreading false information about the origins of the novel coronavirus, even joined in: “Why does the U.S. beautify the so-called Hong Kong independence and violent elements as heroes and fighters while it calls its own people protesting against racial discrimination ‘rioters’?” he said in a news briefing, per Bloomberg. “Why does the U.S. point fingers at the constrained law enforcement by Hong Kong police but turn a blind eye to what happens at home while using shooting and even the National Guard against the protesters?”
The differences are, of course, stark. Most major cities used the National Guard only as a last resort to curtail looting and rioting that protesters say were unaffiliated with anti-police brutality demonstrations, and, instead, used those demonstrations as a cover.
Hong Kong residents have been fighting Chinese incursion for months now, battling first an effort to allow Chinese intelligence agencies to conduct surveillance on &#8220;dissidents&#8221; and enemies of the Communist state hiding on the island, and now, opposing a draconian effort by the Chinese government to strip Hong Kong residents of their rights and place Hong Kong back under Chinese control.

In an unprecedented move, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia have joined in a formal reprimand of China over its decision to impose a draconian national security law on Hong Kong, severely curtailing Hong Kong residents&#8217; rights and freedoms.
The letter, issued Thursday, calls China&#8217;s actions a threat to freedom and democracy and warns that the Asian powerhouse may now be in violation of the 1984 agreement between China and the United Kingdom, transferring power over Hong Kong.
“Hong Kong has flourished as a bastion of freedom,” the four nations wrote, <a href="https://globalnews.ca/news/6996764/joint-reprimand-china-hong-kong-law/">according to Reuters</a>. The letter expresses the international coalition&#8217;s “deep concern regarding Beijing’s decision to impose a national security law in Hong Kong.”
The new legislation, they say, will “curtail the Hong Kong people’s liberties, and in doing so, dramatically erode Hong Kong’s autonomy and the system that made it so prosperous.&#8221;
&#8220;China’s decision to impose the new national security law on Hong Kong lies in direct conflict with its international obligations under the principles of the legally-binding, UN-registered Sino-British Joint Declaration,&#8221; the group notes, adding that they are &#8220;also extremely concerned that this action will exacerbate the existing deep divisions in Hong Kong society.&#8221;
China unveiled the law late last week, shocking the international community and sending Hong Kong into chaos. The rule &#8220;bans secession, subversion of state power, terrorism, foreign intervention and allows mainland China&#8217;s state security agencies to operate in the city,&#8221; <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/28/asia/china-npc-hk-security-law-intl-hnk/index.html">per CNN</a>, and is meant to supersede Hong Kong officials&#8217; authority to control Hong Kong residents, particularly those engaged in the now months-long anti-China democracy movement.
Thursday morning, China&#8217;s legislature approved the law, opting to exercise full control over Hong Kong. <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/28/asia/china-npc-hk-security-law-intl-hnk/index.html">CNN reports</a> that only one of nearly 3,000 delegates voted against the measure. Six delegates abstained.
Hong Kong will now have no choice but to submit to Chinese authority.
&#8220;Now approved, the NPC&#8217;s standing committee will draft the law &#8212; a process that is expected to take about two months. It will then be implemented upon promulgation by the Hong Kong government, bypassing the city&#8217;s legislature via a rarely-enacted constitutional backdoor,&#8221; CNN said Thursday. &#8220;The law will drastically broaden Beijing&#8217;s power over Hong Kong, which last year was roiled by anti-government protests calling for greater democracy and more autonomy from mainland China.&#8221;
The protests began last year, after China attempted, through Hong Kong&#8217;s China-friendly chief executive, Carrie Lam, to extend their surveillance and arrest powers into the island city-state. Lam proposed a law that would allow China to seek out and arrest &#8220;dissidents&#8221; and other enemies of China hiding out inside Hong Kong&#8217;s borders.
The population of Hong Kong revolted, holding a series of pro-democracy protests that, in some instances, involved more than 5 million people &#8212; half the city-state&#8217;s population. The protests grew increasingly violent as China pressured Hong Kong to crack down on demonstrations, and now, convinced that Hong Kong can never quash its residents, China says it&#8217;s moving in to take control.
The United States has already proposed drastic measures against China over the law, including a series of tariffs aimed at corporations operating within China&#8217;s borders. On Wednesday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo even took the extreme step of declaring that Hong Kong was no longer an &#8220;autonomous&#8221; nation and that the Trump administration was considering a response.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Wednesday that the United States has declared Hong Kong &#8220;no longer autonomous&#8221; and that the Trump Administration believes China is in violation of the treaty, inked with the British government back in the 1990s, during the transfer of power, guaranteeing freedom for Hong Kong residents.
China has been &#8220;flexing its muscle,&#8221; <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/27/asia/hong-kong-national-security-law-xi-jinping-intl-hnk/index.html">CNN reports</a>. &#8220;Last week, Beijing announced plans to introduce a draconian new national security law for the semi-autonomous Chinese city that could threaten many of its civil liberties and political freedoms.&#8221;
&#8220;China&#8217;s plans have been met with widespread outrage in Hong Kong and elsewhere, particularly as the new law will be imposed without consulting the city&#8217;s legislature, though Beijing-backed local government leaders have thrown their support behind the plan,&#8221; the network said on Monday.
The United States was among the first nations to condemn the move, with Pompeo announcing late last week that China &#8212; and companies doing business in and with China &#8212; could face economic sanctions unless China releases control over Hong Kong. Over the weekend, American statements on the issue got stronger, as Hong Kong residents took to the streets to protest China&#8217;s incursion, leading to hundreds of arrests.
China has been trying to crack down on Hong Kong for nearly a year, setting off dozens of increasingly violent protests by Hong Kong residents when it pressured the island city-state&#8217;s chief executive, Carrie Lam, into introducing a bill that would have allowed China to investigate so-called &#8220;dissidents&#8221; and make arrests inside Hong Kong&#8217;s limits. When Hong Kong failed to pass the measure &#8212; and the Hong Kong government failed to control the subsequent protests &#8212; Beijing said it needed to extend its influence even further.
On Wednesday, Pompeo made his strongest statement on the incident so far, lambasting China for revoking Hong Kong&#8217;s autonomy and breaking its treaty with the United Kingdom, inked on the transfer of Hong Kong back in the 1990s.
&#8220;Beijing’s disastrous decision is only the latest in a series of actions that fundamentally undermine Hong Kong’s autonomy and freedoms and China’s own promises to the Hong Kong people under the Sino-British Joint Declaration, a U.N.-filed international treaty,” the Secretary of State said in a statement, <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/pompeo-hong-kong-autonomous-china-intervention">according to Fox News</a>.
&#8220;The State Department is required to assess the territory’s autonomy from China, and&#8230;on Wednesday Pompeo certified to Congress that Hong Kong &#8216;does not continue to warrant treatment under United States laws in the same manner as U.S. laws were applied to Hong Kong before July 1997,'&#8221; Pompeo added.
&#8220;No reasonable person can assert today that Hong Kong maintains a high degree of autonomy from China, given facts on the ground,&#8221; the Secretary of State concluded. “Hong Kong is no longer autonomous from China, given facts on the ground.”
President Donald Trump hasn&#8217;t spoken directly on the issue, though the White House press secretary, Kayleigh McEnany, said in a conference this week that Trump is &#8220;displeased&#8221; with China&#8217;s actions.
There are forces at work, however, according to CNN: &#8220;Washington has threatened to revoke Hong Kong&#8217;s special trading relationship and potentially even impose sanctions on Chinese and Hong Kong officials, and more than 200 lawmakers from two-dozen countries have signed an open letter condemning the move.&#8221;

In response to China&#8217;s aggressive move to impose a new national security law on Hong Kong that would further the Chinese Communist Party&#8217;s control of what is supposed to be an independent legal system, the Trump administration is now publicly threatening to impose economic sanctions on both Hong Kong and China.
In an appearance on NBC&#8217;s &#8220;Meet the Press&#8221; on Sunday, White House national security adviser Robert O&#8217;Brien said the administration is likely to revoke Hong Kong&#8217;s special status in response to China&#8217;s increased interference in the administrative region and impose sanctions, what he suggested would be a &#8220;real blow&#8221; to the communist regime.
As <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/china-moves-to-criminalize-dissent-sedition-in-hong-kong-hong-kong-fights-back">The Daily Wire</a> reported, Chinese authorities announced on Friday a new law cracking down on what the regime deems acts of &#8220;sedition&#8221; or &#8220;subversion.&#8221; The law would empower Hong Kong law enforcement to arrest residents connected to Hong Kong’s pro-democracy, anti-China movement at the behest of the Chinese government, effectively bypassing Hong Kong&#8217;s independent legislature and chief executive.
The end of the &#8220;one country, two systems&#8221; framework — established when Hong Kong was released by the United Kingdom in 1997 — would also end Hong Kong&#8217;s role as a &#8220;financial center&#8221; in the region, O&#8217;Brien suggested on Sunday. If China is effectively taking over the administrative region, the U.S. is likely to revoke Hong Kong&#8217;s special status and impose sanctions, O&#8217;Brien warned.
Citing what he predicts will be a &#8220;brain drain&#8221; in the region as members of Hong Kong&#8217;s financial community move out of the area, O&#8217;Brien said he doesn&#8217;t see how Hong Kong&#8217;s current status as an economic center will hold. &#8220;It&#8217;s hard to see how Hong Kong could remain the Asian financial center that it&#8217;s become if China takes over,&#8221; said O&#8217;Brien, as reported by <a href="https://www.axios.com/china-hong-kong-sanctions-obrien-b2dacc96-e949-4844-854f-62d03b2f0ee6.html">Axios</a>.
&#8220;One reason that [members of the financial community] came to Hong Kong is because there was the rule of law there, there was a free enterprise system, there was a capitalist system, there was democracy and local legislative elections,&#8221; the national security adviser explained. &#8220;If all those things go away, I&#8217;m not sure how the financial community can stay there.&#8221;
Asked if sanctions will significantly impact China, O&#8217;Brien noted that the communist regime country is &#8220;dependent on capital from the rest of the world&#8221; and &#8220;liquidity in financial markets.&#8221;
&#8220;If they lose access of that through Hong Kong, that&#8217;s a real blow to Xi Jinping and the Chinese Communist Party,&#8221; he said.

Trump Vs. China Escalates: WH Threatens Sanctions Amid Protest Crackdown, Hong Kong ‘Take-Over’

On Friday, Chinese authorities announced a new law cracking down on Hong Kong&#8217;s pro-democracy and anti-China movement, sneaking in heavy regulations that could allow the Communist behemoth to arrest anyone accused of fomenting &#8220;dissent&#8221; or &#8220;sedition&#8221; in the city-state while much of Hong Kong remains under coronavirus-related lockdown.
The shocking new regulations, Toronto&#8217;s Globe and Mail reports &#8220;will criminalize conduct according to Beijing’s definitions of what constitutes separatism, terrorism, subversion and illegal foreign meddling,&#8221; and, worse, the draft completely revolutionizes Hong Kong&#8217;s legal system, empowering Hong Kong law enforcement to arrest city-state residents at the behest of the Chinese government, and giving &#8220;mainland China the right to place its own enforcers on Hong Kong soil.&#8221;
Actual details of the draft legislation remain under wraps and China hopes the law will pass without transparency.
China is racing to get the measure passed through the Hong Kong legislature, which is currently under a filibuster by pro-democracy lawmakers. The law “has become a pressing priority. We must get it done without the slightest delay,” China&#8217;s foreign minister told state-run media on Saturday.
”Protesters now face graver potential danger and legal consequences,” one pro-democracy protester told the Globe and Mail.
“Given the severity and urgency of the national security law, people will certainly want to return to the street,” said another. “I worry that many people cannot return to the street to protest without risking their personal safety.”
Hong Kong&#8217;s chief executive, Carrie Lam, is largely considered to be a puppet of the Chinese Communist Party, and has been under fire from Hong Kong residents for trying to give mainland China access to political dissidents and other enemies of the Chinese state hiding out on the island. Her support of a law to that effect triggered months of increasingly violent anti-Chinese protests, which subsided only when the island was hit by the coronavirus pandemic.
As Hong Kong suffered through lockdowns, there were indications that China would use the pandemic as cover for more intensive missions to undermine the island democracy and impose Chinese authority. Hong Kong police arrested pro-democracy movement leaders trapped in their homes under lockdown, and China is moving to bring a swift end to the &#8220;one nation, two systems&#8221; freedom that Hong Kong has enjoyed since being released by the United Kingdom in the late 1990s.
Overnight Saturday into Sunday, Hong Kong exploded in new protests.
&#8220;Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Hong Kong Sunday to oppose the Chinese government&#8217;s move to impose a controversial national security law, which threatens the city&#8217;s autonomy and civil liberties,&#8221; <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/24/asia/hong-kong-protest-national-security-law-intl-hnk/index.html">CNN reported</a>. &#8220;Police fired tear gas at the crowds less than an hour after the start of the march, which did not receive official authorization and went against coronavirus social distancing restrictions, which ban groups of more than eight people meeting. An online stream showed protesters throwing objects at police.&#8221;
The United States, through Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, has threatened trade consequences if China goes through with forcing the law, suggesting that the U.S. could drop its trade relationship with Hong Kong altogether.
Beijing, however, remains adamant that it will do what Hong Kong&#8217;s government was unable to do: quash all freedom within Hong Kong.

China Moves To Criminalize Dissent, ‘Sedition’ In Hong Kong. Hong Kong Fights Back.

Hong Kong’s parliament broke out in chaos on Monday as security guards dragged multiple pro-democracy lawmakers out of the assembly.
A handful of Hong Kong lawmakers protested what they characterized as a coup by pro-Beijing legislators to take control of a key committee responsible for approving the bills that will be voted on by the parliament. The pro-democracy head of the House Committee, Dennis Kwok, was ousted on Friday and replaced by Starry Lee, a friend of the Chinese Communist Party, on Monday.
Tanya Chan, a legislator and member of the Civic Party with Kwok, slammed the proceedings while speaking to reporters after. Chan said pro-Beijing lawmakers instigated the ruckus to push through a bill that would criminalize tampering with or degrading China’s national anthem, according to the <a href="https://hongkongfp.com/2020/05/18/breaking-hong-kong-pro-beijing-lawmaker-elected-committee-chair-despite-democrats-short-lived-protest/">Hong Kong Free Press</a>.
“What happened at the meeting has subverted our past understanding of the rules of procedures, principles and existing practices. We do not wish to pass the evil law, but more importantly, we don’t wish to see the pro-establishment camp eroding the Hong Kong legislative system recklessly,” Chan said.
The House Committee, which Kwok oversaw as deputy chairman, has been without a chairman for half a year. Beijing’s supporters in the parliament accused Kwok of stonewalling new legislation and ignoring calls to elect a new chairman to the committee. Pro-Beijing lawmaker Chan Kin-por was tapped to preside over Monday’s election and was ultimately responsible for removing Kwok from his committee position.
Pro-democracy lawmakers protested during the election, attempting to surround Kin-por’s chair at the head of the assembly with a black banner. Security guards that had formed a barrier around Kin-por’s table held back the pro-democracy lawmakers and eventually escorted and carried at least five lawmakers out of the room. At least one legislator was injured in the scuffle, according to The <a href="https://apnews.com/53ad729c99fe22f16e7960a36e6253ec">Associated Press</a>.

Other pro-democracy legislators and protesters held up signs saying “Abuse of Power” and “CCP tramples HK legislature.”
Legislator Lam Cheuk Ting tore pages from the parliament’s rule handbook to signify the CCP-friendly lawmakers destroying the rules and procedures of the Hong Kong governing body, according to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/18/world/asia/hong-kong-protests-fight-legco.html">The New York Times</a>. Lee was elected to chair the House Committee by a unanimous vote after the pro-democracy legislators were removed from the room.
When the “pro-establishment camp don’t like something, they will do whatever it takes, including breaking the system that we have and the rules that we have,” Kwok said, according to the Times. “The price of freedom is constant vigilance.”
The Monday brawl in Hong Kong’s parliament is the second this month. A similar scuffle <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/asia_pacific/scuffles-erupt-in-hong-kong-legislature-as-eased-virus-rules-herald-new-unrest/2020/05/08/ba3dfb06-9101-11ea-9322-a29e75effc93_story.html">broke out</a> on May 8 after pro-democracy lawmakers fought to keep Lee from taking control of the House Committee. The protest turned violent then, as well, and one pro-democracy legislator had to be evacuated from the chamber on a stretcher.

WATCH: Brawl Erupts In Hong Kong Parliament After Ouster Of Pro-Democracy Lawmaker

A new report this week outlined an increasing virus problem in Hong Kong, which is attached to mainland China, where rat hepatitis E is jumping from rats to humans for the first time in history, and no one seems to know how it’s happening.
The first case was reported in 2018 when infectious disease experts at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) examined a man who had just undergone a liver transplant and was having liver problems.
&#8220;Tests found that his immune system was responding to hepatitis E – but they couldn&#8217;t actually find the human strain of the hepatitis E virus (HEV) in his blood,&#8221; CNN <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2020/05/08/health/hong-kong-rat-hepatitis-intl-hnk-scn/index.html">reported</a>. &#8220;With tests for that human strain of HEV negative, the researchers redesigned the diagnostic test, ran it again – and found, for the first time in history, rat hepatitis E in a human.&#8221;
Dr. Siddharth Sridhar, a microbiologist at HKU, told CNN that &#8220;suddenly, we have a virus that can jump from street rats to humans&#8221; but added that it was not clear if it was just a &#8220;one-off incident.&#8221;
Since the first discovery, ten more cases have been identified in Hong Kong with the most recently discovered case being identified a week ago in a man who had no recent travel history and had no signs of rats in his home.
&#8220;The rat strain poses a new mystery: nobody knows exactly how these people are getting infected,&#8221; CNN added. &#8220;In the two years since the discovery, researchers have yet to identify the exact route of transmission from rats to humans. They have theories – maybe the patients drank contaminated water like the usual human strain, or handled contaminated objects – but nothing&#8217;s been definitively proven.&#8221;
Hong Kong&#8217;s Centre for Health Protection (CHP) said in a statement at the end of April that the man was still in the hospital.
Scientists say that while most people experience mild symptoms from the rat hepatitis E virus, those with weakened immune systems can experience severe symptoms, including tissue scarring and liver damage.
Scientists &#8220;don&#8217;t know how long this virus&#8217; incubation period is – meaning how long it takes for patients to get sick after exposure. They&#8217;re still trying to find a treatment, as the medication used to treat the human variant of hepatitis E has had mixed results on patients with rat HEV,&#8221; CNN added. &#8220;Not knowing how the virus jumps from rats to humans makes it very difficult to prevent further infections – or even to make sense of all the data researchers have collected. For instance, people who live in rat-infested areas should theoretically be at higher risk, yet some infected patients come from neighborhoods with low rat numbers.&#8221;
The report added that scientists were testing rat populations throughout the city in an attempt to identify clusters of rats that are infected with the virus before more people become infected, and that the researchers believe that the 11 cases in Hong Kong were &#8220;likely just the tip of the iceberg.&#8221;
The report comes as the world has been devastated in recent months from a coronavirus pandemic that originated in Wuhan, China.
