Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel (D) slammed Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) this week for attacking her faith by suggesting she could not be fair in prosecuting far-Left pro-Hamas activists who were criminally charged for their activities at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
Nessel&#8217;s remarks during a Monday interview on CNN came after her office charged 11 individuals with a variety of crimes, including attempted ethnic intimidation, assaulting or obstructing a police officer, and more.
Tlaib responded by claiming that Nessel, who is Jewish, charged the students because she was biased in favor of Israel. “It seems that the attorney general decided, if the issue was Palestine, she was going to treat it differently, and that alone speaks volumes about possible biases within the agency she runs,” Tlaib claimed.
CNN&#8217;s Jake Tapper said that Tlaib did not accept an interview request on his show and refused to answer follow-up questions about her remarks.
&#8220;For her to say that I could handle a litany of other cases, and that was fine, but when it comes to anything involving pro-Palestinian protesters, I could not be fair, I could not be objective,&#8221; Nessel said, &#8220;Clearly, she&#8217;s referencing my religion as to why she thinks I can&#8217;t be fair.&#8221;

&#8220;She also mischaracterized the charges and I think intentionally, I mean, she talked about this being peaceful protesters,&#8221; she continued. &#8220;No peaceful protesters were charged in this event. And, you know, Rashida is a lawyer. She had every opportunity to call me to ask to see the evidence in this case, but she didn&#8217;t do that.&#8221;
Nessel said that Tlaib &#8220;is well known for making inflammatory and incendiary remarks that are anti-Semitic in nature. So this isn&#8217;t the first time that we would have heard these words out of her mouth.&#8221;

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D) <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/whitmer-refuses-to-condemn-rashida-tlaibs-anti-semitic-attack-on-michigans-ag">refused</a> to back up Nessel during a CNN interview with Tapper on Sunday, saying: &#8220;I’m not going to get in the middle of this argument that they’re having.&#8221;
After seeing the widespread backlash she faced online, Whitmer finally stood up to Tlaib on Monday but did not call out Tlaib by name.
&#8220;The suggestion that Attorney General Nessel would make charging decisions based on her religion as opposed to the rule of law is antisemitic,&#8221; Whitmer said. &#8220;Attorney General Nessel has always conducted her work with integrity and followed the rule of law. We must all use our platform and voices to call out hateful rhetoric and racist tropes.&#8221;

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer refused to back up her attorney general during an interview over the weekend when she was asked about the attorney general prosecuting far-left anti-Semitic protesters at the University of Michigan.
The Democrat governor made the remarks during a Sunday interview on CNN&#8217;s &#8220;State of the Union&#8221; when asked by Jake Tapper about Rep. Rashida Tlaib&#8217;s (D-MI) anti-Semitic attacks on Attorney General Dana Nessel for prosecuting the students.
The 11 individuals were charged with a variety of crimes, including attempted ethnic intimidation, assaulting or obstructing a police officer, and more.
Tlaib responded by claiming that Nessel, who is Jewish, charged the students because she was biased in favor of Israel. &#8220;It seems that the attorney general decided, if the issue was Palestine, she was going to treat it differently, and that alone speaks volumes about possible biases within the agency she runs&#8221; Tlaib claimed.

Whitmer refused to condemn Tlaib&#8217;s anti-Semitic remarks against Nessel and refused to take sides on the matter at all, saying that she only wants to &#8220;make sure that both these communities are protected and respected under the law in Michigan.&#8221;
Tapper pressed Whitmer again, noting that Tlaib&#8217;s accusation was serious and again gave Whitmer the opportunity to back up her attorney general.
&#8220;Like I said, Jake, I&#8217;m not going to get in the middle of this argument that they&#8217;re having,&#8221; Whitmer responded.

Michigan Democratic Gov. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/gretchen-whitmer" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gretchen Whitmer</a> said on Thursday that she&#8217;s &#8220;nervous&#8221; about polls giving Vice President Kamala Harris a clear advantage over former President Donald Trump in the Great Lakes State.
Speaking at the Texas Tribune Festival, Whitmer mentioned a <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/09/04/politics/cnn-polls-battleground-states/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CNN poll</a> of battleground states that was released earlier this week that was very favorable toward Harris in Michigan and Wisconsin. According to the poll, Harris leads Trump 48% to 43% in Michigan and 50% to 44% in Wisconsin.
&#8220;It makes me nervous to see any poll that says there&#8217;s a five-point lead for Kamala Harris in Michigan now. It&#8217;s just not true,&#8221; Whitmer said, according to <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/media/gretchen-whitmer-rejects-polls-showing-harris-up-5-points-against-trump-michigan-not-true" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fox News</a>. &#8220;It&#8217;s gonna be a very close race. I believe we can win it. And I believe we wlll, but it&#8217;s gonna be very close.&#8221;
Whitmer incorrectly stated that the CNN poll didn&#8217;t take third-party and independent candidates into account. The latest CNN poll factored in Robert F. Kennedy Jr. — who has dropped out — Libertarian candidate Chase Oliver, and Green Party candidate Jill Stein. None of them polled above 4% in Michigan.
&#8220;In 2016, Hillary Clinton lost to Donald Trump by 11,000 votes. Jill Stein was also on our ballot and earned more than 11,000 votes,&#8221; Whitmer said.

Kennedy has been polling the highest among independent and third-party candidates in Michigan, even after suspending his campaign. Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/michigan-dem-sos-says-rfk-jr-s-name-must-remain-on-ballot" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> late last month that Kennedy had to remain on the Michigan ballot despite dropping out of the race. The Michigan Court of Appeals, however, ruled on Friday that Kennedy&#8217;s name <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/rfk-jr-scores-major-wins-for-trump-in-2-battleground-states" target="_blank" rel="noopener">should be removed</a> from the Michigan ballot.
Judges in North Carolina also ruled in favor of Kennedy removing his name from the ballot. The independent candidate endorsed Trump last month and said he would seek to remove his name from ballots in battleground states where he could potentially act as a &#8220;spoiler.&#8221;
Whitmer discussed the unpredictable political direction of Michigan, saying, &#8220;I do think, you know, in Michigan over my lifetime, we take big swings. We&#8217;ve had 12 years of a Republican governor, and then we have term limits so eight years of a Democrat, then eight years of a Republican, then eight years of a Democrat. So it is a state that is notoriously kind of independent. We split our ticket a lot. And that&#8217;s who we are in Michigan.&#8221;
Trump won the state in 2016 over Hillary Clinton and lost to President Joe Biden in 2020. According to the latest <a href="https://www.realclearpolling.com/polls/president/general/2024/michigan/trump-vs-harris" target="_blank" rel="noopener">RealClearPolitics</a> polling average, Harris leads Trump in Michigan by just over 1 point.

ABC News host Linsey Davis, who is set to co-moderate the network&#8217;s presidential debate in Pennsylvania next month, appeared to suggest Monday night that the former president was headed to a small town in Michigan because of the Ku Klux Klan.
Davis made the smear against Trump while speaking to Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer at the Democratic National Convention.
&#8220;As you know, former President Donald Trump is expected to go campaign in Howell, Michigan, tomorrow,&#8221; Davis said. &#8220;Many people are aware that a month ago, in Howell, KKK protesters marched in the streets with the white robes on and suggested that they support Donald Trump.&#8221;

&#8220;I’m curious if you make anything about that connection and him going in particular to Howell tomorrow,&#8221; Davis continued.
The fact that Davis tried to suggest a connection between Trump and the KKK because he is visiting a town where a dozen fringe activists held a protest weeks ago highlights concerns that Trump had about having a debate on ABC News, given the network&#8217;s apparent bias against him.
ABC News announced last week that Davis would co-moderate the network&#8217;s presidential debate in Pennsylvania next month with network colleague David Muir.
Howell has a population of more than 10,000 people and it&#8217;s located in a swing state that will play a critical role in determining who wins the White House.
Davis&#8217; suggestion that Trump somehow had a &#8220;connection&#8221; to the KKK comes after someone shot Trump during a rally in Pennsylvania last month. Trump narrowly escaped with his life as he turned his head moments before the gunman opened fire and a bullet pierced his ear.

Images of the protesters did not show anyone wearing &#8220;white robes,&#8221; as Davis claimed. Some of their clothes appeared to have symbols that were associated with white supremacists.
The protesters completely covered their faces, so there was no way of knowing who they were as they held signs that said things like &#8220;White Lives Matter,&#8221; &#8220;End The War On White Children,&#8221; and &#8220;Fight Against White Replacement.&#8221;
Local media said that they chanted &#8220;Heil Hitler&#8221; and that they expressed support for Trump.
The ABC debate is currently the only one Harris has accepted.

Whitmer made the remarks during a Sunday interview on NBC News&#8217; &#8220;Meet The Press&#8221; while discussing some of the extreme things that Harris&#8217; vice presidential running mate Tim Walz has provided to illegal aliens in the state of Minnesota where he serves as governor.
Left-wing host Kristen Welker noted that Walz has given illegal aliens driver&#8217;s licenses, the ability to qualify for free tuition at public universities, and the ability to enroll in the state&#8217;s free health care program.
&#8220;Would you like to see the Harris administration adopt those same policies, Governor?&#8221; she asked.

Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance said on Wednesday that Democrat-controlled Michigan, a vital swing state in the 2024 election, would become part of a &#8220;red wall&#8221; of states, arguing that voters are fed up with leftist economic policies.
Vance spoke to supporters in Byron Center, a small town just south of Grand Rapids, where he focused on the economy. Former President Donald Trump&#8217;s running mate blasted &#8220;a generation of failed leadership&#8221; in Michigan and predicted that voters in the state would overwhelmingly turn out in support of Republicans in November.
&#8220;Thanks to a generation of failed leadership, Michigan has seen thousands of manufacturing jobs disappear. &#8220;Michigan, people used to call it a blue wall state. I think Michigan is a red wall state now because people are sick of losing their livelihoods and losing their jobs,&#8221; he added.
Michigan has been listed in a group of states considered the &#8220;blue wall&#8221; given their streak of voting for the Democratic presidential candidate in every election from 1992 to 2012. Trump broke the &#8220;blue wall&#8221; streak in 2016 when he won Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
Under Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer&#8217;s leadership, Michigan&#8217;s job growth numbers have fallen behind the national average. After the state&#8217;s economy took a hit during Whitmer&#8217;s prolonged COVID lockdowns, it bounced back slightly but is far behind the pace of the rest of the country. Watchdog group Michigan Capitol Confidential <a href="https://www.michigancapitolconfidential.com/news/michigan-population-jobs-numbers-fall-behind-national-trends" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> in February that jobs in the U.S. were up 3.3% since the pandemic, but over the same time period, employment in Michigan had only gone up 0.3%.

Michigan is also near the top of the list among states that have seen the most people move to another state. According to 2022 <a href="https://wbckfm.com/residents-are-quickly-leaving-michigan-for-good-but-where-are-they-moving-to/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">data</a> from United Van Lines, nearly 168,000 people left Michigan, which was the fifth-highest number among any state. Around 30% of those who fled Michigan did so because of a job in another state. The Great Lakes State saw an especially high number of Gen Z residents leave, being the only state that saw more Gen Z adults flee than move into the state, <a href="https://www.dbusiness.com/daily-news/study-gen-z-is-leaving-michigan-in-droves/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to U.S.  Census Bureau data analyzed by Zillow.
Michigan is completely controlled by Democrats, who hold the governor&#8217;s mansion, a majority in both chambers of the state legislatures, and both U.S. Senate seats. Trump won the state over Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton in 2016 by just over 10,000 votes. Biden then took the state in 2020 by more than 150,000 votes.
Trump led in the polling average in Michigan before Biden dropped out of the race on July 21. Now that Vice President Kamala Harris is the nominee, Trump trails in the state by 2.4 points, according to the latest <a href="https://www.realclearpolling.com/polls/president/general/2024/michigan/trump-vs-harris" target="_blank" rel="noopener">average</a> from Real Clear Politics.

Speculation surrounding Whitmer as a potential VP pick has swirled in recent weeks. The Michigan governor traveled to New Hampshire to campaign for Harris last week, and she will also be on the campaign trail for Harris in Pennsylvania later on Monday. Whitmer threw cold water on the VP rumors, however, <a href="https://www.msnbc.com/morning-joe/watch/gov-whitmer-i-think-two-women-on-the-ticket-would-be-exciting-215889477739" target="_blank" rel="noopener">telling MSNBC</a> host Jonathan Lemire that she is &#8220;not a part of the vetting.”
“I have communicated with everyone, including the campaign, that I’ve made a commitment to serve out my term as governor in Michigan,” Whitmer said. “I can be an excellent ally to a President Harris and I can be a great co-chair of the Harris campaign from my place as governor. So I am not a part of the vetting.”
While Whitmer ruled herself out as VP contender, she told MSNBC, &#8220;It would be exciting to have two women on the ticket.&#8221;
&#8220;But guess what, there are a lot of great women in this country who are leading, and we&#8217;ve got a deep bench right now, so I&#8217;m excited to be among our high watermark of eight strong Democratic women governors in this country &#8230; everyone one of them could add something to this ticket,&#8221; she added.
Asked by Lemire how people are responding to Harris&#8217; presidential campaign, Whitmer replied, &#8220;I think people are excited,&#8221; adding that she believes Harris &#8220;is going to inspire a lot of people to get activated who maybe were not yet.&#8221;
&#8220;President Biden served our country with dignity and honor for decades, and he&#8217;s made huge personal sacrifices to do that. I&#8217;m grateful that in this moment &#8230; he is passing the torch and uplifting a new generation of leaders,&#8221; Whitmer said.
&#8220;It&#8217;s also gotten a lot of energy. I can see it on the ground in Michigan. I saw it in New Hampshire when I was there at the end of last week,&#8221; she added. &#8220;We&#8217;re seeing more people volunteering, more people contributing to the success of this campaign. It is still going to be a close race.&#8221;
With Whitmer seemingly out of the consideration to be Harris&#8217; running mate, the list of names believed to be the frontrunners for the VP slot grows shorter. Harris has <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-07-27/kamala-harris-vice-presidential-search-focuses-on-3-candidates" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reportedly</a> narrowed her VP contenders to a shortlist that includes Arizona Sen. As Michigan Democratic Governor <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/gretchen-whitmer" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gretchen Whitmer</a> basks in the national spotlight and gets floated for a potential spot on the Democrats’ 2024 ticket, she’s being slammed at home for signing an education budget that cuts deep into school safety and mental health spending.
The budget, which passed the Michigan legislature with support from Democrats and was signed by Whitmer on Tuesday, cuts school safety and mental health funding by a whopping $300 million, a <a href="https://gophouse.org/posts/rep-martin-reiterates-concerns-over-cuts-to-schools-as-governor-signs-new-k-12-budget">92% decrease</a>, The Detroit News <a href="https://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/politics/2024/07/23/gretchen-whitmer-school-funding-michigan-retiree-pensions-health-care/74509820007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. The cuts also take from teachers’ pension funds and leave the per-student funding without an increase for the first time in 13 years.
The budget cuts have led to an outcry from Republicans in the state legislature, school district superintendents, and teachers. Education advocates — who often support Democratic Party politicians and policies — have also blasted Whitmer and Michigan Democrats over the education cuts.
“I have no words,” Republican state Rep. Gina Johnsen told The Daily Wire in a phone interview. Johnsen said that Republicans were given no time to read the budget before a vote was taken.
“The party that gets criticized for not caring cared, and the party that said they cared so much just gouged the education budget,” Johnsen said. The state representative added that multiple Democratic state legislators who voted for the budget are “now horrified by the last-minute changes that went through, and they’re saying, ‘Oh my gosh, I wouldn’t have voted for it had I known.’”
Johnsen predicted that Michigan would see “layoffs in the education field” because of the new budget cuts.
Michigan State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice, who was appointed by the Democrat-majority State Board of Education, also expressed concern about the budget.
“This reduction will slow Michigan’s recent momentum in addressing student mental health challenges,” he said in a <a href="https://www.michigan.gov/mde/news-and-information/press-releases/2024/07/23/state-school-aid-budget-continues-strong-investments-in-helping-at-risk-students#:~:text=%E2%80%9CThis%20reduction%20will%20slow%20Michigan's,health%20needs%20of%20our%20students.">statement</a>. “A $300 million reduction in funding for children’s mental health services and school safety fails to recognize the physical and mental health needs of our students.”
Robert McCann, the executive director of The K-12 Alliance of Michigan, blasted Whitmer’s education budget as “misguided.”
&#8220;There will, unfortunately, be consequences of this misguided budget felt in every school across Michigan,&#8221; he <a href="https://archive.ph/HjRgq#selection-679.129-679.179">said</a>. McCann <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/mccannr1">worked</a> as chief of staff for the Michigan Senate Democratic Caucus while Whitmer was the Michigan Senate Minority leader a decade ago.

Michigan Education Association President Chandra Madafferi praised some aspects of the budget, but <a href="https://mea.org/mea-president-and-ceo-hails-return-of-3-of-salaries-back-to-educators-says-more-work-must-be-done/">acknowledged</a>, &#8220;There were deep cuts to categorical funding for school safety and student mental health — cuts that will need to be navigated at the local level to keep our schools safe learning spaces for all students and employees. Our hope is that state lawmakers will return after the summer break to pass a supplemental budget that funds these critical student mental health and safety priorities.&#8221;
While education faced a 92% cut, Whitmer and Michigan Democrats passed over $400 million in earmarked pet projects, including $10 million for a youth sports complex in Frankenmuth and $2 million for Downtown Boxing Gym in Detroit, among multiple other projects, Bridge Michigan <a href="https://www.bridgemi.com/michigan-government/michigan-lawmakers-add-411m-pet-projects-state-budget">reported</a>.
Republican state Rep. Cam Cavitt told The Daily Wire that both sides of the aisle were working to get schools the funding they need for safety and mental health, but “the governor gutted that.”
“And why did the governor do that? So she could give out political gifts to her base who go back to the splash pads and the cricket fields,” Cavitt said.
“I have six school districts in my House district and not one of the superintendents is in favor of the budget,” he added.
The cuts to school safety and mental health spending are especially concerning to some educators and advocates in the wake of the Oxford High School shooting in November 2021, where a lone gunman claimed the lives of four of his classmates.
“Republicans made school safety and mental health top priorities in our education budgets, but now that Democrats have full control, they’re reversing course and cutting support for these critical student needs,” House Republican Leader Matt Hall <a href="https://gophouse.org/posts/rep-hall-democrat-budget-cuts-millions-in-safety-mental-health-funding-from-southwest-michigan-schools">said</a> earlier this month.
While the new budget has been signed, Democrats could still bring a supplemental package to the floor for a vote when the legislature returns from recess later this month.
The Daily Wire has reached out to Gov. Whitmer’s office, requesting comment on the budget.
The Michigan governor, who has been on tour to promote her new book &#8220;True Gretch,&#8221; is viewed as a powerful player in the future of the Democratic Party. Whitmer was floated as a potential replacement for Democrats as the party’s nominee for the 2024 election, and after Vice President Kamala Harris presumably locked up the nomination, some have speculated that Whitmer could be offered the VP slot.

One name that is being mentioned a lot is Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, a Democrat governor in a red state who won reelection last year.
Beshear told CNN that he has not been asked to submit any paperwork to Harris&#8217; campaign and that the only way he would ever consider being someone&#8217;s vice presidential pick &#8220;is if I felt that I could help my people in Kentucky more in a different role or that there was a chance to move past the partisanship, the constant fighting.&#8221;

After ardently defending President Joe Biden in the wake of his disastrous performance against Donald Trump on the debate stage, Michigan Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer admitted on Wednesday that she only watched &#8220;clips&#8221; of the June 27 event.
Whitmer, who is also a national co-chair of the Biden campaign, joined late-night host Stephen Colbert on Wednesday night to promote her new book and discuss the Democratic Party&#8217;s worries surrounding Biden. The Michigan governor has been floated as a potential replacement candidate for Democrats if Biden were to drop out of the race, but she has repeatedly said she fully supports the president&#8217;s re-election bid as some Democrats call for him to step aside.
&#8220;Did you watch the debate?&#8221; Colbert asked.
&#8220;I&#8217;ve seen clips of the debate,&#8221; Whitmer said.

Whitmer finally acknowledged that Biden&#8217;s debate performance was &#8220;lousy,&#8221; but she continued to defend her party&#8217;s leader.
&#8220;I think that the debate rattled a lot of people, right? It was a lousy performance. I don&#8217;t think anyone&#8217;s disputing that,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I spent some time with the president in the White House with a number of my colleagues shortly after the debate, I talked to him this past weekend with all of the other vice chairs of his campaign, co-chairs, and, you know, he&#8217;s up for this.&#8221;
&#8220;He&#8217;s up for the job for the next four years, and I am working my tail off on his behalf,&#8221; Whitmer added.
In a USA Today interview published on Tuesday, Whitmer <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/gretchen-whitmer-defends-biden-says-he-keeps-really-aggressive-calendar" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> the debate was only “a 90-minute snapshot of someone who has been back and forth to Europe twice in one week,” adding that Biden keeps a &#8220;really aggressive calendar.&#8221;
Michigan, a vital swing state in the presidential election, is <a href="https://www.realclearpolling.com/polls/president/general/2024/michigan/trump-vs-biden" target="_blank" rel="noopener">slightly leaning</a> in Trump&#8217;s direction, according to the RealClearPolitics average of polls. Biden took Michigan in 2020 after Trump narrowly won the state over Hillary Clinton in 2016.
