New York City has paid almost $100 million to rent empty preschool classrooms, according to a shocking new report.
The New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/04/20/us-news/empty-nyc-preschools-cost-taxpayers-nearly-100m-in-rent-alone/">reported</a> Monday that the city has paid $99.3 million over the last five years for rent and utilities on 28 buildings for preschool classrooms acquired through part of former Mayor Bill de Blasio’s “universal” preschool push. The spending on the empty classrooms has both former officials and NYC residents upset about the Big Apple’s latest use of taxpayer dollars.
“I don’t think it’s corruption. It’s incompetence,” a former city Department of Education official told the Post.
The official added that despite “such a significant need for pre-K seats,” many of the classrooms were empty because they were made available in areas without verifying demand. Meanwhile, other parts of the city have long wait lists for preschool seats.
The Post reported that de Blasio’s push for the“3-K For All” program, which provides full-day early childhood education for 3-year-olds, led to a mad dash for renting buildings that have yet to be used.
De Blasio blamed the empty classrooms on his successor, former Mayor Eric Adams, saying that “during my administration, we never had a problem filling Pre-K and 3-K seats because we did lots of parent-friendly outreach.”
“Sadly, the Adams administration ended those efforts and took a step backwards on early childhood education,” he told the Post.
For his part, Adams said that he “inherited a system with thousands of empty early childhood seats,” and he focused on “stabilizing providers and increasing enrollment, rather than simply expanding capacity.”
Seven of the vacant sites are expected to be opened up in the fall by Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
“New York City is continuing to invest in and strengthen early care and learning across the city, including expanding access to 3-K and improving access to Pre-K programs for families,&#8221; the New York Department of Education told The Daily Wire. &#8220;NYC Public Schools, in partnership with City Hall, is opening new Pre-K Centers and activating additional early childhood sites in communities where families need more access to programs closer to home.”
One of the empty sites is at Union Turnpike in Queens and has cost the city $10.8 million, according to the report.
“They realized [afterward that] it wasn’t a good location. … If they didn’t think the need was there, why did they pick the site in the first place?” the former Education Department official said.
Nearby business owner Larry Mottola told the Post that it was troubling that the government would waste money on unused buildings.
“They had beautiful classrooms, a stainless steel kitchen [and] there’s a beautiful playground around back,” he said. “It’s bothersome, [that] they would waste that kind of money for four years.”
Another parent said that it was frustrating that the government selected sites where there was no demand.
“It feels like a real misstep that we’re not even utilizing the space that’s being paid for,” said Jessica Setton. &#8220;De Blasio had good intention, terrible execution.&#8221;

In an early show of his leftist bona fides, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani ordered police and sanitation workers to stop dismantling the city&#8217;s homeless encampments. Now that 18 people have died on the streets amid record cold temperatures, Mamdani is reversing course.
The mayor is expected to reinstate homeless encampment sweeps — which were standard under his predecessor, Mayor Eric Adams — as early as Wednesday, <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/01/29/us-news/nyc-cops-sanitation-workers-told-to-stop-taking-down-homeless-encampments-as-crisis-spirals/">according</a> to the New York Post. It&#8217;s a major reversal for Mamdani, who <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/01/29/us-news/nyc-cops-sanitation-workers-told-to-stop-taking-down-homeless-encampments-as-crisis-spirals/">claimed</a> that the city&#8217;s primary responsibility was &#8220;connecting [homeless] New Yorkers to housing.&#8221;
New York&#8217;s Department of Homeless Services will lead encampment sweeps by issuing notices to homeless individuals to clear their encampments within one week. During that period, homeless outreach workers will make repeated visits to connect individuals with shelters and supportive services.
Curtis Sliwa, the leader of New York’s Guardian Angels, a volunteer organization that conducts homeless outreach, told The Daily Wire that homeless individuals are reluctant to enter shelters for a number of reasons. 
“First off, they’re not in control of their mental faculties,&#8221; Sliwa said. &#8220;Number two, they fear going into a shelter where they&#8217;re going to be preyed upon, where what few, few items that they may have will be stolen from them, where they can be sexually abused and physically harassed, and just again turned into a human piñata.” 
Sliwa also said many individuals who are struggling with addiction resist shelter rules, including a 10 p.m. curfew. Some, he said, believe they are better off in a jail cell than in a shelter. 
Before reversing his stance on encampment sweeps, Mamdani converted city buses into temporary warming centers during the cold streak. However, the initiative drew criticism after reports surfaced that the warming buses were difficult to locate. Mamdani took responsibility for the communication failures. “I think at the end of the day, that is the responsibility that I have as a mayor,” Mamdani said. “It’s never a moment to pass the buck to anyone else.” 
Some of the buses, which had 40 seats, were reportedly not operating at full capacity. Norman Siegel, a civil rights attorney who leads a volunteer group called the Street Homeless Advocacy Project, <a href="https://gothamist.com/news/mayor-mamdani-takes-the-rap-for-mishaps-around-warming-buses-for-homeless-people">blamed</a> inadequate signage. “As the cliché goes,” he said, “Sometimes the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing.” In an attempt to address the problem, Mamdani’s team committed to additional signage in more than <a href="https://gothamist.com/news/nyc-sent-a-warming-bus-to-a-hub-for-homelessness-those-who-needed-it-had-no-idea">ten languages</a>. 
With the homeless on the streets and not in shelters or warming buses, New York City has received more than 3,300 complaints about encampments, according to 311 data.
Mamdani&#8217;s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether the encampment sweeps are a winter-only effort or a lasting policy change.

The situation surrounding Zohran Mamdani’s swearing-in as New York City mayor has produced an unusual quirk on social media: he has inherited the official @NYCMayor account along with all of the tweets posted under former Mayor Eric Adams — including Adams’s pro-Israel messaging. Because the account name and profile have now been updated to reflect Mayor Mamdani, those older tweets remain publicly visible under his name, even though they were written before he took office, creating a jarring and sometimes humorous mismatch between past content and the new mayor’s positions.

The second big New York mayoral debate happened on Wednesday night.
The front-runner, Zoran Mamdani, the pro-Islamist, pro-jihadist Marxist front-runner who won the Democratic nomination, appeared against Andrew Cuomo, the former governor of New York, who had to resign from office after getting a bunch of old people killed with his bad COVID policy — and also grabbing women. He ran out of old people and was ousted from office, which is why Kathy Hochul is now the governor of New York.
Cuomo lost the Democratic nomination to Mamdani and has been trailing him in the polls as an independent ever since, largely because there&#8217;s a third candidate in the race, Republican Curtis Sliwa. He’s a radio host from New York, and a long-time New York mainstay who founded the Guardian Angels. Back in the 1970s and 1980s, the Guardian Angels would walk around with red berets on the NYC subway, making the city safer for New Yorkers by intimidating would-be criminals. 
The polls right now have Mamdani ahead, and it is unclear that even if Sliwa drops out, the consolidated support between Cuomo and Sliwa would be enough to overcome Mamdani.
What is amazing is Mamdani’s base of support. According to a brand new poll out from the Patriot Polling <a href="https://patriotpolling.com/our-polls/f/new-york-city-mayoral-election">survey</a>, Mamdani has 62% of the foreign-born vote in New York City. Cuomo is at 24%; Sliwa is at 12%.
For those who seem to believe that it makes no difference when you import a bunch of people to the United States who have different views of the United States than mainline, mainstream, average American views — it makes a very, very big difference.
Among American-born New Yorkers, Cuomo leads at 40% while Mamdani has only 32%. Sliwa has 25%. The poll shows Mamdani at the top of the pack, with 43% of the overall vote, Cuomo with 34% of that vote, and Sliwa with 19%.
If that’s accurate, it would mean that Sliwa dropping out would mean that Mamdani would likely lose.

It appears that TikTok has been putting its thumb on the scale in favor of Mamdani. The amount of online manipulation that is now part of our daily culture is truly astonishing. We saw it during BLM. We saw it during COVID. We&#8217;ve seen it most recently during the Israel-Hamas War, in which extraordinary amounts of propaganda were put out by foreign actors on TikTok and on X, deliberately designed to split the American body politic over that particular issue.
And now TikTok has been heavily promoting Zohran Mamdani.

It is not a shock that the Chinese-based app would prefer a Marxist Islamist as the mayor of New York. 
In last night’s debate, when questioned in any serious fashion about his views, Mamdani had nothing. He&#8217;s got that phony, smarmy, pasted-on smile that sends a chill up the spine of everyone who can identify basic authenticity, but seems to charm the pants off a bunch of wild leftists who see Mamdani smiling and somehow think it’s genuine.
Cuomo and Sliwa went on the attack. It got hot. The reality is that on the debate stage, Sliwa was the best. There&#8217;s no question that Curtis is the best person on the debate stage.
The problem, of course, is that Curtis is a Republican. He&#8217;s never going to break 25% of the vote, not for love or money.
This has been a major issue, at least for the last several weeks. It&#8217;s been clear that the only way to beat Mamdani would be for there to be a consolidation of the vote.
Curtis was asked about dropping out and basically melted down, saying, “I have armed security guards now protecting my life. And Nancy&#8217;s like I&#8217;ve been bribed by the billionaires to drop out of here. If anything happens to me or anything happens to my wife because of this frenzy that I hear constantly coming from some of your colleagues here at WABC, it&#8217;s on you guys. &#8230; my life is on the line here &#8230; The frenzy that is coming out of people&#8217;s mouths &#8230;”
That is not an excuse for why he’s staying in the race. Many of us have armed security at all times. That is the nature of the beast right now. It is just an unfortunate point in American politics.
That is an unfortunate result of so many political actors these days who use unhinged rhetoric about their opponents and include in that unhinged rhetoric, insane conspiracism that leads unhinged people to believe that prominent political commentators and politicians are controlling their lives and making their lives worse in such a way that they can only be removed by force.
Curtis needs to drop out to give Cuomo a shot. Cuomo has run a particularly terrible race. He has basically been a somnambulist throughout this race. He has not run an energetic campaign. He seems to believe the mayoralty should simply fall in his lap.
But Mamdani didn&#8217;t get out of this debate scot-free; Cuomo launched a blistering attack, pointing out that Mamdani is a leech on the ass of society, that he has never held a job, and has been a completely useless person his entire life, which is absolutely true. He is a trust fund baby who tried to make a career as a bad rapper before getting elected to the Assembly, where he ditched pretty much every major vote. He is 33 years old and has yet to hold a real job, and he&#8217;s running for mayor of the financial capital of Planet Earth.
Cuomo blasted:

I cannot deal with Mamdani’s smile. I can&#8217;t. It&#8217;s so creepy and weird. The fakeness, the inauthenticity of this phony, phony human being is sinister.
He just says “affordability” and the “future” a lot. And what does he mean by affordability? He means that he is going to promise a bunch of things he can&#8217;t actually fulfill, because he doesn&#8217;t have the capacity to raise state taxes. He wants city-owned grocery stores and a $30 minimum wage.
This is crazy. He is a weirdo creep, a Marxist who seems to believe that he can run a junior high presidential campaign in which you promise no homework and free candy every day, and people will vote for it.
Mamdani is the scavenger coalition — all in one human. I talk in my book “Lions and Scavengers” about the Scavenger Coalition, which would be the leeches, vultures, and barbarians. He&#8217;s trying to appeal to all three. He really is more on the barbarian line, meaning he is somebody who is not originally from the United States, who does not believe in the basic ideals of the United States, but is using the free speech and freedom of thought and free politics in the United States to make his way to destroy the civilization from the inside.
And he is making promises he has no intention of keeping.
As I said before, this is a junior high school presidential campaign where he promises free cookies and milk, endless candy, and no homework.
And if New Yorkers buy this, they&#8217;re going to get to take the ride after they buy the ticket.
Curtis should drop out of the race. I&#8217;ve said it over and over. He does not have a path to victory. I&#8217;m of a divided mind about this because I still have the H.L. Mencken phraseology in my mind, which is that democracy is the theory that people get what they vote for, good and hard.
But as someone who would like to see New York not become even more of a s***hole than it has become recently, I&#8217;m obviously rooting very hard for the defeat of this Marxist Islamist.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams, after a bitter public split with former Governor Andrew Cuomo, announced Thursday that he will <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/10/23/nyregion/adams-endorse-cuomo-nyc-mayor.html">endorse</a> Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral election. This move marks a full reconciliation between Adams and Cuomo, who just weeks ago were trading harsh insults as Adams dropped out of the race.
Adams made clear his endorsement is a strategic effort to block Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic socialist nominee. Sitting courtside at the Knicks season opener alongside Cuomo, Adams pledged to campaign in neighborhoods where Cuomo is strong, aiming to mobilize &#8220;black and brown communities&#8221; disproportionately hurt by gentrification and economic pressures.

However, the race tightens considerably among older voters — the most reliable voting bloc — many of whom remain undecided.
A striking feature of this race is the divide between native and foreign-born New Yorkers. Mamdani enjoys overwhelming support among foreign-born voters, holding 62% in recent <a href="https://ijr.com/foreign-born-voters-likely-to-hand-socialist-zohran-mamdani-key-to-new-york-city-poll-shows/">Patriot Polling</a> surveys, compared to Cuomo’s 24%. Among native-born New Yorkers, Cuomo leads with 40%, while Mamdani trails at 31%.
This split highlights the growing political clout of immigrant communities in New York City and their alignment with Mamdani’s democratic socialist message. Meanwhile, Cuomo’s strength among native-born voters and older demographics signals a city divided by age, origin, and ideology.

“It&#8217;s not always easy to see the impact of good policy in just three years. &#8230; I know some remain unsure of me after the unfortunate events surrounding my federal case. I was wrongfully charged because I fought for this city, and if I had to do it again, I would fight for New York again,” Adams said in the video. “And yet, despite all we&#8217;ve achieved, I cannot continue my re-election campaign. The constant media speculation about my future and the campaign finance board&#8217;s decision to withhold millions of dollars have undermined my ability to raise the funds needed for a serious campaign. I hope that over time, New Yorkers will see this city thrived under our leadership, the policies we put in place should be continued and expanded. Adams was running as an independent candidate against socialist Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is also running as an independent after losing the Democratic primary to Mamdani, and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa.

Just days ago, Rudy Giuliani <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/rudy-giuliani-hospitalized-after-vehicle-struck-from-behind-at-high-speed?author=Tim+Pearce&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=undefined&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=Rudy+Giuliani+Hospitalized+After+Vehicle+%E2%80%98Struck+From+Behind+At+High+Speed%E2%80%99">made headlines</a> for surviving a car accident after stopping on the side of a highway to help a woman reporting domestic violence.
This recent act of public service from &#8220;America’s Mayor&#8221; reflects a lifetime of public service, from taking down the Mafia in the Southern District of New York’s famed 1980s &#8220;Commission Trial,&#8221; to prosecuting high-profile terrorism cases that were tied to the first World Trade Center bombing in the 1990s with Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew McCarthy.
Unfortunately, that history of fearless, nonpartisan justice stands in sharp contrast to the SDNY’s posture today, where partisan lawfare seems to dominate.
That’s why it’s so encouraging that a group of judges <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/08/18/us-news/judges-approve-trump-pick-jay-clayton-to-remain-interim-us-attorney-for-southern-district-of-new-york/">ruled</a> in late August that Trump appointee Jay Clayton can remain in place as U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York.
Clayton has the potential to restore the SDNY back to its former glory during the Giuliani years.
He is a longtime Republican who clerked for a Reagan-appointed judge and served as head of the Securities and Exchange Commission during the first Trump administration.
For far too long, the SDNY has seemed to specialize in partisan lawfare.
For example, SDNY Judge Lewis Kaplan presided over journalist E. Jean Carroll’s 2019 civil <a href="https://www.npr.org/2024/01/26/1226626397/trump-defamation-trial#:~:text=What%20this%20case%20is%20about,former%20president%20was%20also%20liable.">lawsuit</a> against Trump, which accused the sitting president of rape and defamation.
Carroll <a href="https://dailydodge.com/e-jean-carroll-testifying-in-civil-case-says-she-cant-recall-date-of-alleged-trump-attack/">couldn’t remember</a> what year the alleged assault took place, never mentioned it in her diary, and claimed that the numerous similarities between her account and a 2012 &#8220;Law and Order&#8221; episode were an “astonishing” coincidence.
But despite all these holes in Carroll’s story, the Left saw a chance to undermine Trump and leaped at it. Democrat billionaire megadonor Reid Hoffman <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/anafaguy/2023/05/10/what-was-reid-hoffmans-role-in-funding-e-jean-carrolls-case/">funded</a> the entire lawsuit through his nonprofit American Future Republic, and it was anti-Trump commentator George Conway who <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usxxlZosnNs">urged</a> Carroll to sue in the first place.
Kaplan not only oversaw this farce but also put his thumb on the scale for Carroll. He <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-rape-case-lawyers-banned-from-speaking-about-dna-judge-rules-2023-3">ruled</a> male DNA found on Carroll’s dress inadmissible, even after Trump offered to provide a sample. He <a href="https://www.reuters.com/legal/trump-fails-narrow-rape-accusers-case-trial-looms-2023-03-28/">admitted</a> additional defamation charges that punished Trump for defending himself on social media. He even <a href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/23793781-tacopina-mistrial-filing/">interrupted</a> a line of questioning from Trump’s lawyer in a way that signaled clearly to the jury where his sympathies lay.

The SDNY also conveniently <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-sdny/pr/new-york-city-mayor-eric-adams-charged-bribery-and-campaign-finance-offenses">charged</a> New York City Mayor Eric Adams with bribery shortly after he started <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/15/nyregion/eric-adams-mexico-border-migrants.html">speaking out</a> against the Biden administration’s open border policies.
When the Trump administration ordered the charges dropped, multiple prosecutors <a href="https://www.npr.org/2025/02/13/nx-s1-5297120/eric-adams-federal-prosecutors-resignations">resigned</a> in outrage after failing to make a single peep about the lawfare campaign against Trump.
These partisan prosecutions even extend to the realm of antitrust enforcement. 
 
The SDNY is currently <a href="https://www.justice.gov/archives/opa/video/justice-department-sues-visa-monopolizing-debit-markets#:~:text=Description:%20Today%2C%20the%20Justice%20Department,developing%20new%20and%20innovative%20alternatives.&amp;text=Review%20the%20YouTube%20Terms%20of%20Service%20and%20the%20Google%20Privacy%20Policy%20.">playing host</a> to a Biden-era Justice Department lawsuit against Visa. Biden Attorney General Merrick Garland accused the company of driving up “the price of nearly everything” by monopolizing the debit transaction market.
In fact, it was Biden’s own inflationary policies that were driving up prices. Visa, which has a high market share because of its popularity but nothing close to a monopoly, just provided a handy scapegoat.
Meanwhile, the district always seems to drop the ball when it comes to getting actual justice for actual victims.
They <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/07/27/business/sam-bankman-fried-campaign-finance-charge.html#:~:text=Federal%20prosecutors%20pursuing%20the%20criminal,The%20authorities%20have%20said%20Mr.">failed</a> to charge crypto fraudster Sam Bankman-Fried until his whole fraudulent empire was collapsing around him, even though the writing was on the wall long before the crash.
By that point, it was already too late. Bankman-Fried was the <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/ftx-sam-bankman-fried-political-donations-2022/">largest single donor</a> to Democrats in the 2022 midterms, ploughing <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2022/12/14/sbf-ftx-political-donations/">over $40 million</a> into PACs that helped Democrats keep the Senate and hold Republican gains in the House to historic lows.
Damian Williams, then the U.S. attorney for the SDNY, <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-sdny/pr/united-states-attorney-announces-charges-against-ftx-founder-samuel-bankman-fried#:~:text=BANKMAN%2DFRIED%20was%20arrested%20yesterday,fraud%2C%20plain%20and%20simple.%E2%80%9D">made it clear</a> that these donations from SBF and his cronies were funded with “stolen customer money.” The people SBF defrauded might get their money back, but voters have no such remedy. There’s no way to un-air the ads his ill-gotten gains bankrolled.
The sex trafficking case against rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs provides another example of the SDNY’s failure. Maurene Comey, the lead prosecutor on the case, botched it so badly that the Justice Department <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrxDE8izOUc">fired</a> her just weeks after the verdict came down.
Although Combs was <a href="https://www.npr.org/2025/07/03/nx-s1-5454769/sean-combs-found-guilty-on-2-counts-but-acquitted-on-most-serious-charges">convicted</a> of prostitution offenses and faces up to 20 years in prison, the jury <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/jury-reaches-verdict-sean-diddy-combs-sex-trafficking-trial-rcna214785">found</a> him not guilty on the more serious charges of sex trafficking and racketeering.
Incidentally, Comey also <a href="https://apnews.com/article/justice-department-james-comey-maurene-trump-dda5d1f40f08346bd97696ce4791e8ec">worked</a> on district’s prosecution of Jeffrey Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell. That case <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-sdny/pr/ghislaine-maxwell-sentenced-20-years-prison-conspiring-jeffrey-epstein-sexually-abuse">ended</a> with a conviction and a 20-year prison sentence but left so many unanswered questions that it’s difficult to call it an unqualified win.
During her confirmation hearings, Attorney General Pam Bondi <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/pam-bondi-senate-confirmation-hearing-attorney-general-nominee-planned-remarks/">promised</a> to end “partisan weaponization” and “restore confidence and integrity to the Department of Justice – and each of its components.”
The SDNY is a particularly dysfunctional component that’s been fouling the gears of our justice system for far too long.
By ending the disastrous tradition of “blue slips,” the administration can take a major step toward the restoration of truly impartial justice.
There is no better way to honor the now recovering “America’s Mayor” than by restoring one of his top legacies back to its former glory.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams proposed a new law on Thursday that would make it easier to get drug addicts safely off the streets and into treatment.
The “Compassionate Interventions Act” <a href="https://www.nyc.gov/office-of-the-mayor/news/633-25/mayor-adams-new-proposal-further-support-new-yorkers-struggling-substance-use">would</a> allow doctors to involuntarily commit drug addicts in New York City.
If the law passes, a doctor would be able to bring someone &#8220;who appears to pose a danger to themselves or others due to substance use&#8221; to a hospital and allow a judge to mandate treatment if the person is unwilling to enter treatment voluntarily.
Public drug use on city streets &#8220;degrades quality of life and leaves a feeling of disorder among many city residents,&#8221; Adams&#8217; office said in a press release.

This week, Adams launched his &#8220;End Culture of Anything Goes&#8221; campaign aimed at cracking down on drugs and homelessness in the Big Apple.

&#8220;Our administration refuses to turn our backs on New Yorkers in need, and with today’s announcement, we’re laying out a vision that will help get everyone the support they need. Also on Thursday, Adams announced he would invest another $27 million in substance abuse treatment, including more teams on the ground that engage with drug addicts and new programs to help people finish treatment once they start.
New York City struggles with pockets of drug addiction, such as &#8220;The Hub&#8221; in the Bronx.
The South Bronx area around Roberto Clemente Plaza is home to harrowing scenes of dozens of drug addicts shooting up in public, sometimes spilling blood onto the sidewalk, then tweaking and standing doubled over while drug dealers sell their wares brazenly in broad daylight nearby, all while trash and needles pile up.
A total of 366 &#8220;active substance users&#8221; were <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/12/24/us-news/bronxs-the-hub-is-drug-riddled-business-as-usual-after-post-exposes-junkie-wasteland/">recorded</a> last fall when the NYPD, sanitation workers, and health department workers teamed up to try to clean up &#8220;The Hub.&#8221;
The city teams arrested 35 people and put 47 people in homeless shelters, but the area remains a hot spot for public drug use to this day.

The last running hotel-turned-migrant shelter in New York City is set to close in April.
The Row Hotel, which was also the first to be <a href="https://abc7ny.com/post/asylum-seekers-migrants-immigration-nyc-migrant/12323493/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">converted</a> into a migrant shelter in 2022, is located a block away from Times Square. Housing migrants in the luxury property’s 1,300 units costs the city $5.13 million a month.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced on Monday that the city would not renew its contract with Rockpoint Group, which owns the establishment.
He called the closure a “major milestone in our administration’s recovery from this international humanitarian crisis,” in a statement to the <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/policy/immigration/3496193/major-new-york-hotel-migrant-shelter-ends-city-contract-eric-adams/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Washington Examiner</a>.
“Three years ago, thousands of migrants and asylum seekers began streaming into our city every week — and the Adams administration stepped up.”
“We opened hundreds of emergency migrant shelters to ensure no family slept on the street. Since then, we have successfully helped more than 200,000 migrants leave our shelter system and take the next step toward self-sufficiency,” Adams continued.
At its <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/08/09/us-news/nyc-to-shut-down-last-migrant-hotel-after-shelling-out-170-million-to-crime-ridden-shelter/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">peak</a>, New York City was running 220 migrant shelters. In 2024, 80% of its 193 operating shelters were former hotels.
“We have skillfully and humanely managed a national humanitarian crisis — and have done what no other city could do,” he added.
The Row has become a hotspot for crime and chaos, with numerous recorded <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/08/09/us-news/nyc-to-shut-down-last-migrant-hotel-after-shelling-out-170-million-to-crime-ridden-shelter/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">incidents</a> of attacks against NYPD officers by residents who are members of the Tren de Aragua gang.
City residents are celebrating the closure and the end of mass sheltering.
“Hallelujah. I’m happy that it’s happening,” said a resident of The Camelot apartment complex across the street. “We pay a lot of money to live here, and it doesn’t seem fair.”
“There are people sitting here all day, littering, leaving food waste, water bottles,” the resident said. “A lot of them have children, and there are women sitting around here smoking weed all day, the children are just playing on the street, on the bike lanes.”
One security guard said he started wearing a wedding ring because he’s been propositioned twice by migrant prostitutes staying at the hotel.
The closures come as President Donald Trump’s immigration policies have reduced illegal border crossings by over <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/washington-secrets/3411740/border-crisis-illegal-immigration-pete-flores-hearing/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">99%</a>. CNN recently <a href="https://x.com/RapidResponse47/status/1952065321889902682" target="_blank" rel="noopener">predicted</a> the United States will reach negative net migration in 2025, for the first time in 50 years.
The 3,400 current residents of the Row will be moved to the city’s traditional shelter system, according to the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/08/10/nyregion/migrants-row-hotel-nyc.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New York Times</a>.
A spokesman for the mayor’s office noted that the city government has also “purchased more than 65,000 tickets to help migrants exit the shelter system and reach their preferred destinations.”
The mayor’s office also noted that of the migrants already in New York, 110,000 asylum applications have been processed so far, accounting for over 90% of those eligible.
That levels out to $3950 a unit, a few hundred dollars above the <a href="https://www.realtor.com/advice/rent/cheapest-new-york-city-roommate/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">average</a> monthly rate for a single room in NYC.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams said Tuesday that law enforcement believed that the gunman who shot and killed four people and injured another on Monday at a New York City office building might have been targeting the National Football League. 
Adams <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/live/2025/07/29/nyregion/nyc-shooting-manhattan">said</a> that investigators “have reason to believe” that the gunman who attacked the 345 Park Avenue office tower in Manhattan was “focused on the NFL.” The NFL is headquartered in the building, and one of its employees was wounded during the incident. 
Adams said that the shooter had attempted to go to the floor where the NFL was located, but instead went to the 33rd floor, where Rudin, a property management company, is based. 
A three-page note was found in the wallet of the gunman, who died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, claiming that he had chronic traumatic encephalopathy. CTE is a degenerative brain condition often associated with football players caused by frequent head trauma. 
The Daily Wire is not publishing the gunman&#8217;s name due to a company policy against contributing to the unintentional glorification of mass shooters.
New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said in a Monday press conference that the shooter, who played high school football, had a history of mental health issues. 
“Terry Long football gave me CTE and it caused me to drink a gallon of antifreeze,” the gunman wrote in a note, <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/07/29/us-news/nyc-gunman-shane-tamura-reportedly-found-with-note-hinting-at-possible-motive-for-park-ave-skyscraper-shooting-sources/">according</a> to the New York Post. Long was a former player for the Pittsburgh Steelers <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/news/story?id=2307003">who</a> committed suicide by drinking antifreeze after a history of brain injuries. 
“You can’t go against the NFL, they’ll squash you,” the gunman  reportedly wrote, adding, “Study my brain please I’m sorry Tell Rick I’m sorry for everything.”
Alluding to the note, Adams said that “it appears as though he was going after the employees of the NFL.”
“We’re still going through the suicide note to zero in on the exact reason but at this time it appears as if it’s something attached to his belief he experienced CTE from the NFL,” he added. 
The NFL employee who was injured during the attack is currently in the hospital, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/45848952/nfl-employee-seriously-injured-deadly-shooting-tower-housing-league-hq">said</a>. 
&#8220;As has been widely reported, a gunman committed an unspeakable act of violence in our building at 345 Park Avenue. One of our employees was seriously injured in this attack,&#8221; Goodell said. &#8220;He is currently in the hospital and in stable condition. NFL staff are at the hospital and we are supporting his family.
Two other victims killed in the attack have been <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/nypd-officer-among-two-victims-identified-in-deadly-nyc-mass-shooting">identified</a> as 36-year-old NYPD officer Didarul Islam and Blackstone executive Wesley LePatner.
President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he had been briefed on the shooting and offered his condolences. 
“I have been briefed on the tragic shooting that took place in Manhattan, a place that I know and love,” he posted on Truth Social. “I trust our Law Enforcement Agencies to get to the bottom of why this crazed lunatic committed such a senseless act of violence. My heart is with the families of the four people who were killed, including the NYPD Officer, who made the ultimate sacrifice. God Bless the New York Police Department, and God Bless New York!”

The Trump administration sued New York City on Thursday over its sanctuary city policies, arguing that the city has illegally impeded the federal government from enforcing immigration laws.
The <a href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/26028709-1/">lawsuit</a> asserts that the city is violating the federal government’s jurisdiction under the Constitution’s supremacy clause. The city’s sanctuary policies designed to protect illegal aliens from federal law enforcement infringe upon the federal government’s authority to police immigration.
“New York City’s Sanctuary Provisions have the purpose and effect of making it more difficult for federal immigration officers to carry out their responsibilities in that jurisdiction. 
New York City’s sanctuary laws “intentionally obstruct the sharing of information envisioned and affirmatively protected by Congress, including sharing basic information such as release dates, court appearance dates, and custodial status,” the lawsuit states. “The challenged provisions also impair federal detention of removable aliens, including dangerous criminals, contrary to federal law.”
“The Sanctuary Provisions further purport to direct federal officials to procure criminal arrest warrants to take custody of removable aliens, even though Congress has made an explicit policy choice that such apprehensions for removal can be effectuated by civil arrest warrants for immigration enforcement,” it continues.
The lawsuit also accused the city of effectively ensuring that criminal aliens are released onto the streets rather than being turned over to federal authorities for potential deportation. The ban on city officials turning criminal aliens over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement requires “ICE to risk officer safety and expend considerable resources to effectuate arrests in communities.”
“This intentional sabotage of federal immigration enforcement is unlawful and dangerous. These Sanctuary Policies have resulted in countless criminals being released into the City who should have been held for immigration removal from the United States,” the lawsuit states.
New York City is the latest in a string of major American cities that have been hit with lawsuits over sanctuary city policies. The Trump administration in June sued Los Angeles. In February, the administration filed a lawsuit against Chicago.
“Sanctuary cities are only sanctuaries for criminals. President Trump promised to Make America Safe Again and deport criminal illegal aliens,” White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson told <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/trump-doj-sues-new-york-city-long-standing-sanctuary-immigration-policies">Fox News</a> in a statement. “But sanctuary cities, like NYC, are working in direct opposition to the mandate that President Trump was elected to fulfill and American citizens are paying the price. The Trump Administration will not tolerate local politicians interfering in the enforcement of federal immigration laws.”

Curtis Sliwa, the Republican nominee for New York City mayor, slammed the pockmarked political careers of his slate of Democratic opponents on Wednesday.
Sliwa, the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/he-aint-going-nowhere-why-curtis-sliwa-thinks-hell-be-the-next-mayor-of-new-york-city">founder</a> of the Guardian Angels subway patrol, is facing socialist Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee, as well as current mayor Eric Adams and former governor Andrew Cuomo, both Democrats running as independents.

Cuomo resigned as governor in 2021 after investigators found he had sexually harassed at least 11 women. The former governor also faced fierce criticism for forcing nursing homes to accept patients from hospitals without testing them for COVID, a policy that was blamed for many nursing home deaths, which Cuomo&#8217;s administration then undercounted by as much as 50%, the New York attorney general <a href="https://ag.ny.gov/press-release/2021/attorney-general-james-releases-report-nursing-homes-response-covid-19">found</a>.
Sliwa also criticized the Big Apple&#8217;s current mayor.
&#8220;Eric Adams is damaged goods. Every day, a new case of corruption in the police department. They believe he&#8217;s corrupt,&#8221; Sliwa said.
Over the past two weeks, five lawsuits have <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2025/07/16/us/eric-adams-nypd-corruption-lawsuit">cropped</a> up claiming rampant corruption within the NYPD that was allegedly supported by the Adams administration. This week, a former NYPD commissioner filed a federal lawsuit against Adams, accusing him of running the police department like a &#8220;criminal enterprise.&#8221; Several prominent officials say they were pushed out after speaking up.
&#8220;Nobody would have known who Zohran Mamdani was until Eric Adams failed as the sitting mayor,&#8221; Sliwa said.
Mamdani has called himself a Democratic socialist and has proposed controversial and expensive policies like government-run grocery stores, free buses, free childcare, a rent freeze for more than two million New Yorkers who live in rent-subsidized housing, and deploying mental health professionals rather than cops in crises.
Meanwhile, Sliwa wants to beef up the NYPD with 7,000 more officers, make Madison Square Garden, Columbia University, and New York University pay their fair share of property taxes, which he says will bring in $843 million for taxpayers, and repeal Adams&#8217; &#8220;City of Yes&#8221; zoning legislation, which he said is destroying residential neighborhoods in the outer boroughs.
&#8220;Everybody likes Curtis Sliwa. My favorable ratings are the highest in this election cycle,&#8221; Sliwa said.
Sliwa faces an uphill battle in the polls, but he is currently beating Adams and is statistically tied with Cuomo and Mamdani, according to one <a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/harrisx-nyc-poll-tight-race-emerges-in-nyc-mayoral-general-election-but-cuomo-stronger-than-adams-against-mamdani-302506087.html">poll</a> this week. Mamdani leads at 26%, with Cuomo at 23% and Sliwa at 22%, all within the margin of error. Adams trails at 13%, while 15% of voters remain undecided, according to the HarrisX poll.
